Trip 25: Ultimate Game Day Weekend – Featuring Mlb & Nfl Games

Jay Buckley’s Baseball Tours is pleased to announce the details of the 11th annual Ultimate Game Day Weekend featuring MLB and NFL games. Join us for exciting Major League Baseball action as teams fight for the playoffs and a divisional showdown in the National Football League.

Join us as we venture out to see two of the most iconic, and historic, stadiums in all of sports.

This tour departs and ends at our host hotel, the Sonesta Chicago O’Hare Airport Rosemont. The hotel has a free shuttle and a Harry Caray’s restaurant in the lobby.

The first game will be a National League showdown between the New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field. We will enjoy a tailgate party at the stadium prior to the game.

The second game will be an National League Central matchup between the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs . Fortunately, this is a day game in the friendly confines of Wrigley Field, which will allow us plenty of time to explore Wrigleyville and enjoy the sights and sounds of Wrigley Field. This will be the final series/weekend of the MLB regular season. With the Brewers and Cubs neck and neck at the top of the National League Central, there should be a rocking environment at both stadiums as we enter the 2024 MLB playoffs.

The third, and final, game will be a rivalry game at historic Lambeau Field. The Green Bay Packers will host the Minnesota Vikings in week 4 of the NFL season. This will be the first divisional game for both teams who will battle it out in the NFC North. We will enjoy a tailgate party before the big game in Green Bay.

The Packers Tailgate Party includes:

  • Unlimited food – Bratwurst, Hamburgers, Chicken Sandwiches, Walking Tacos and Pizza
  • Unlimited beverages – Beer (Miller Products), Soda, Water, Bloody Mary’s and FULL open bar
  • Musical entertainment including Packers’ favorite songs to get you ready for the game
  • Prizes, special promotions and other celebrity appearances
  • Tailgate party is located just a block away from Lambeau Field

Included in this tour is deluxe motorcoach transportation, hotel room for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, tickets to all three games, breakfast every morning, and a tailgate party before the Green Bay game.

Price Per Person: $1,645 Double – $1,525 Triple – $1,475 Quad – $1,945 Private

You can fly into O’Hare on Friday, September 27 (be at the hotel by 2:00 pm CDT) and fly out of O’Hare on Monday, September 30 at any time. We will have pick up points in La Crosse, Madison, and Milwaukee.

If you need an extra hotel room before or after the tour, please contact us about a discounted rate (Chicago – $139, La Crosse – $199).

Trip 26: Arizona Fall League Tour – Come See The Stars Of Tomorrow

Major League Baseball created the Arizona Fall League to serve as an off-season “graduate school” for top prospects in each team’s organization. The AFL allows these top prospects to showcase their talent in front of many general managers, scouts, and minor league directors.

The Arizona Fall League has six teams; each team is made up of top prospects from all the major league teams. All the games are played in the Phoenix area at the Spring Training facilities of the major league teams. This is baseball’s best kept secret – great seats, great talent, great baseball.

The trip includes lodging for seven nights at a Scottsdale Old Town hotel, tickets, and ground transportation to all games.

We will attend six to nine games at all six parks during the week, concluding with the Rising Stars All Star game.

We will send the exact itinerary as soon as the schedule is announced in 2024.

Price Per Person: $1,595 Double – $1,495 Triple – $1,445 Quad – $2,095 Private

Granddaughter of Negro League baseball great 'stunned' by stats merger with MLB

'It's a dream come true,' Turkey Stearnes' granddaughter says of the news.

From the 1920s to the '50s, Negro League Baseball (NLB) was the home for Black players who were segregated from the other, whites-only, baseball clubs. And for decades, the stats of those Black players were kept separate from the official Major League Baseball (MLB) record books.

That is, until Wednesday, when MLB officially merged the NLB stats with their own.

As a result, many MLB records have now been supplanted by the achievements of previously overlooked Black players.

VIDEO: MLB to add Negro League statistics to record books

Josh Gibson, for example, now holds the records for highest career batting average, with .372, surpassing Ty Cobb. Gibson's .718 slugging percentage and 1.177 on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS) also beats the great Babe Ruth, according to ESPN , while his .459 career on-base percentage now ranks as the third-highest of all-time.

Another player who has made his way onto the updated list of power hitters is fellow Baseball Hall of Famer Norman "Turkey" Stearnes. One of the best hitters in NLB history, he boasted a .348 lifetime batting average and 21 more home runs than Gibson, with 186.

Stearnes' granddaughter, Vanessa Ivy Rose, spoke with "Start Here" about her reaction to hearing the news about the merger.

START HERE: You've been talking about this issue for a long time. You even hosted a season of ABC's podcast "Reclaimed" on this, called "The Forgotten League." What was your reaction to hearing this news today?

Vanessa Ivy Rose: To be honest, I was stunned. I mean, it felt like a dream come true. And I was so happy and so proud of my grandfather, who obviously is no longer here. But to see that he's getting this recognition, this visibility – and it's not just about him, but about his brothers and sisters who played in the Negro Leagues, too, as well. To see them actually be introduced to the mainstream public in this way and being cemented as legends. I mean, this was unbelievable. I'm still taking it all in. I can't believe it.

START HERE: In the show, you talk about your grandfather's legacy: what it means to your family, what it means to baseball as a whole. What is your family's reaction today, first, and also what have they said about your grandfather in the past?

MORE: 'Reclaimed: The Forgotten League' takes a look into the unseen history of the Negro Leagues

Vanessa Ivy Rose: You know, it really starts with my grandmother. I have to talk about her first, because my grandfather passed away in 1979 and my grandmother is no longer with us but in 1979, she started writing letters to advocate for my grandfather to be in the Hall of Fame, to make sure that people knew who he was outside of our family and outside of historians. So I know she's in heaven jumping for joy right now and just celebrating, hopefully with Grandpa Turkey, too. They're probably just so ecstatic to see this and to see it come to fruition.

My mom, Joyce, and my aunt, Rosalyn, have been advocating for so long – giving speeches, talking about things pertaining to my grandfather's legacy and talking about his story. And so to have everybody across the country be able to see Turkey Stearne's name and know that he can kind of become a household name now is just unbelievable.

VIDEO: MLB adding players from the Negro Leagues to its official record books

START HERE: Speaking of everybody seeing his name, your grandfather in these new stats is now sixth in all-time batting average. He's sixth in all-time slugging percentage. He was a great baseball player. But those stats that have got him on to these record books now, they haven't changed for decades. So why, in your view, has this recognition taken so long?

Major leaguers praise inclusion of Negro Leagues statistics into major league records

  • May 29, 1:51 PM

Vanessa Ivy Rose: Well, the Negro League's history has been hidden for quite some time, and when we look at the Negro League's players, we would always think of them in terms of, like, the mainstream. He's like a hidden figure, you know, my grandfather is, and also all the other players who came along with him. But everyone knows Jackie Robinson. That's the name that they remember, that's the name that they see, and that's a face that they can recognize.

I think the stats have been hidden for quite some time because they've been cast away. They were deemed as unimportant. The segregation of the league actually had people thinking, "Okay, why should we care about these people? They don't matter."

We talked to Bob Kendrick, who's the president of the Negro League's Baseball Museum for the podcast, to get a better sense of the history behind the Negro Leagues. So now that people actually know the Negro Leagues were there and they can go back and look at some of the history that we can find – because a lot of it has been lost to time and a lot of those statistics are not able to be found, a lot of the box scores and different things – this opportunity for people to actually see, "Okay. Wow! Look at these players. They were excellent!" as you mentioned. They're some of the greatest of all time. They should have been playing in the major leagues all along.

START HERE: In your podcast, one of the images that struck me the most was the plaque of your grandfather, and the fact that his plaque is on the outside of Tiger Stadium, while the other Tiger greats, the other Detroit greats, are on the inside of Tiger Stadium. So, I guess that leads to my question of, as you mentioned, this league was repeatedly overlooked. There has been this big victory now with these stats, but is there more to do in your eyes?

MORE: Video -- Baseball records changing MLB forever

Vanessa Ivy Rose: You know, in terms of the plaque, It's an amazing plaque. I go visit it every time I go down to Comerica Park. I was just there Sunday and went over to granddad and kissed it and told him that I loved him because, , he wore number 8 and actually the game that we were at, the Toronto Blue Jays went up on us in the 8th inning, 11 to 9. And number 8, Matt Verley, came up in the bottom of the 9th and hit a home run to win the game for us. And I was like—

START HERE: He was right there with you.

Vanessa Ivy Rose: Right there with us, you know? So, he's always there. People do ask, "How come it's outside instead of inside?" And the main reasoning behind it in terms of what the Tigers told us at the time was because he wasn't a Detroit Tiger, he was a Detroit star, he didn't get a statue inside of Comerica Park where they have all those other Tiger greats: Ty Cobb, Hank Greenberg, and so on and so forth, right?

It still hurts. It's like a bittersweet thing. It's amazing. The plaque is unbelievable outside, but we wish grandpa had been a Detroit Tiger because he belonged there, clearly, with the stats that we see now.

START HERE: Aside from that, is there more to be done just across the league, in your view, in recognizing, the Negro Leagues?

Vanessa Ivy Rose: Yeah. You know, the work never ends. And so when we're looking at the game of baseball and trying to grow the game of baseball and looking at how many Black kids are playing baseball, or just the fact that the Negro Leagues today are being talked about, and like I said, even educators that I know are walking up to me today going, "Wow, this is amazing." But they just learned about Turkey Stearnes literally because of the podcast or literally just this year. And these are educated people with master's degrees and everything, right? So we're missing that piece overall in terms of education. And that's what this is going to provide: the opportunity for people to learn more and to see what they didn't learn, what was left out on purpose. And so baseball has the opportunity to not just be a sport, but it's going to be transformative and provide education for people to help this world be better.

START HERE: Vanessa Ivy Rose, the granddaughter of Turkey Stearnes, the host of "The Forgotten League." Check it out. Thank you so much for your time today.

Vanessa Ivy Rose: Thank you so much for having me. It's such an honor.

Professional golfer Grayson Murray, 30, dies by suicide after withdrawing from Charles Schwab Challenge

Murray was a two-time winner on the pga tour.

grayson-murray-cwc-g.png

Professional golfer Grayson Murray has died. He was 30 years old. Murray's death comes after he withdrew Friday during the second round of the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge, citing an illness.

A day after Murray's death rocked the larger sporting world, his parents announced in a statement through the PGA Tour that he died by suicide.

"We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support," Eric and Terry Murray said. "Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now."

An undeniable talent, Murray was the second-youngest golfer in history to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour before turning eventually pro in 2015. He bounced up and down between the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour over the course of his career, becoming a polarizing figure at times because of frequent outbursts on the course.

Still, his potential consistently flashed as he won twice on the PGA Tour -- capturing the 2017 Barbasol Championship and 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii -- and three times on the Korn Ferry Tour.

When he won the Sony Open, it seemed as if Murray had turned a corner after battling anxiety, depression and alcohol abuse throughout his young career. He said in January that he had been sober since early 2023. He also shared that he was unprepared for life as a pro when he first got out of college and began traveling.

"Yes, I would drink during tournament weeks," Murray said after his Sony Open win. "It was my outlet. I thought I was invincible coming out here as a 22-year-old, winning as a rookie, played three days hungover when I won. Best thing and worst thing that ever happened to me was winning my rookie year -- but also feeling like I was invincible."

Murray cited his faith and his fiancee as helping ground him, and he spoke about his road to recovery.

"It took me a long time to get to this point," he said. "… I'm a different man now. I would not be in this position right now today if I didn't put that drink down eight months ago."

Murray added: "People who don't know me, I'll have to show it through my actions, and they'll get back on Grayson's side. My demeanor is so much better. It's really a lot of fun now. I really don't live and die by a golf shot anymore. I'm not going to sit here and say it's going to be all glory and roses, but it's going to be a lot better."

The PGA Tour considered postponing play at the Charles Schwab Challenge as the golf world was rocked by Murray's death . However, his parents insisted the tournament continue as scheduled as it was what their son would have wanted.

"We were devastated to learn -- and are heartbroken to share -- that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words," said PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan in a Saturday statement. "The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.

"I reached out to Grayson's parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play. They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes."

A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Murray attended Wake Forest, East Carolina and Arizona State where he played golf before turning pro. In 141 career PGA Tour starts, Murray had 10 top-10 finishes, including those two victories.

The PGA Tour has sent grief counselors to both tournament sites this week and made others available virtually for its members.

The Dallas Stars and Edmonton Oilers meet Monday in Game 3 of their best-of-7 Western Conference Final, which is tied 1-1. Puck drop from Rogers Place is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET (TNT). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Stars vs. Oilers odds , and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Stars bounced back from Thursday’s 3-2, Game 1 loss in 2OT by posting a 3-1 win Saturday in Game 2 on home ice to salvage a split. The Oilers still were able to seize home-ice advantage with the win in the series opener. The Under cashed in both outings.

Dallas has limited the opposition to just a single goal 4 times in the past 6 playoff games since Game 3 of the Colorado series. The Under is on a 4-1-1 run in the past 6 games and is 9-4-1 across the past 14 outings.

Edmonton has allowed 3 or fewer goals in 6 consecutive outings, and the Under is on a 5-0-1 run in the span. At home, the Oilers have picked up wins in 3 of the past 4 games. The Over us 4-1-1 in 6 home outings in these playoffs.

Stars at Oilers odds

Provided by BetMGM Sportsbook ; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 6:33 a.m. ET.

  • Moneyline (ML) : Stars +105 (bet $100 to win $105) | Oilers -125 (bet $125 to win $100)
  • Puck line (PL)/Against the spread (ATS) : Stars +1.5 (-250) | Oilers -1.5 (+200)
  • Over/Under (O/U) : 5.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Stars at Oilers projected goalies

Jake Oettinger (9-6-0, 2.04 GAA, .922 SV% — 2024 playoffs) vs. Stuart Skinner (8-4-0, 2.65 GAA, .890 SV%, 1 SO — 2024 playoffs)

Oettinger allowed just a single goal on 29 shots in the Game 2 victory against the Oilers, and he has allowed exactly 1 goal 4 times in the past 6 playoff starts. He has made 28 or more saves in 3 straight contests, and he and the Stars have won 3 straight games on the road.

Skinner has won 3 of the past 4 games since returning to the lineup in Game 6 of the Vancouver series after being benched for 2 games. He has allowed a total of just 7 goals on 89 shots in the 4 starts, going 3-1 with a 1.62 GAA and .921 SV% since returning to the starting job.

Stars at Oilers picks and predictions

Oilers 3, Stars 2

The OILERS (-125) are worth a look in Game 3 on home ice.

Edmonton did a good job gaining the road split in Dallas, seizing home-ice advantage from the Stars. Now, the Oilers look to keep that advantage in their 1st home date of the series.

Edmonton has won 3 of the past 4 games at home, and it is 4-2 in 6 home dates in the postseason.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Stars +1.5 (-250) will cost 2½ times your potential return, and that’s way too much risk if you require insurance and don’t want to play Dallas straight up.

The Oilers have been involved in 1-goal games in 4 of the past 5 at Rogers Place, while 9 of the past 11 playoff games have also been 1-goal games for Edmonton. So, expect this one to be close.

UNDER 5.5 (-105) is the lean, but go with a half-unit play at most.

We have seen the Under cash in 2 straight games in this series, while the total has gone low at a 5-0-1 clip in the past 6 playoff outings for the Oilers.

The Under is 3-0 in the past 3 games for the Stars, too, while cashing at a 4-1-1 clip in the past 6 outings.

Pro golfer Grayson Murray, 30, died by suicide, family says

By Lucia Suarez Sang

Updated on: May 27, 2024 / 1:35 AM EDT / CBS News

The family of pro golfer Grayson Murray, the 30-year-old whose death  was announced on Saturday, said in a statement Sunday that he died by suicide.

The PGA Tour released a statement on behalf of Eric and Terry Murray, the golfer's parents, who said they "have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone."

"It's surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It's a nightmare," the statement said, adding: "He was loved and he will be missed."

The Murrays thanked the PGA Tour and the golf community for its outpouring of support.

"Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now," they said.

2024 PGA Championship - Round One

They asked for privacy and asked people to honor their son by being kind to one another.

"If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else," the statement said.

The PGA Tour announced on Saturday that the two-time tour winner had died. CBS Sports reported he had withdrawn from the second round of the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth.

"I am at a loss for words," PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said. "The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones."

PGA officials said grief counselors will be made available at all venues this week.

Murray won his second PGA TOUR title at this year's Sony Open in Hawaii. He played golf at Wake Forest University, East Carolina University and Arizona State University before turning professional. He won his first title at the 2017 Barbasol Championship when he was 23 years old.

LPGA Veteran Lexi Thompson Announces Retirement After 2024 Season

Patrick andres | may 28, 2024.

Oct 13, 2023; Las Vegas, Nevada, USA; Lexi Thompson smiles during an interview after the second round of the Shriners Children's Open golf tournament at TPC Summerlin.

Lexi Thompson, an LPGA Tour stalwart, is set to call it a career.

Thompson, 29, will retire at the end of the 2024 season, she announced Tuesday. The Coral Springs, Fla.,native has 11 career Tour wins to her name—including the 2014 Chevron Championship, a major, at the age of 19.

The U.S. Women's Open, presumably Thompson's last, begins Thursday in Lancaster, Pa. Thompson's best finish in the event is a tie for second in 2019; her most recent LPGA Tour win also came in '19, at the ShopRite LPGA Classic in Galloway, N.J.

Thompson began her career at an extremely young age, qualifying for the U.S. Women's Open as a 12-year-old in 2007. She turned professional three years later at the age of 15.

Lexi Thompson will retire from professional golf at the conclusion of the 2024 LPGA season. She’ll be speaking to the media at 2:30 p.m. ET today at Lancaster, ahead of her 18th and final U.S. Women’s Open. — Gabby Herzig (@GabbyHerzig) May 28, 2024

She peaked at fourth in the world rankings, reaching those heights in both 2015 and 2017. In the latter season, she was involved in a highly publicized incident where a fan watching on television called in a costly rules violation on her during a major tournament.

More recently, she achieved her best finish at the Women's PGA Championship in 2022, finishing second.
