Good morning

Good evening

"Switzerland is a country that has to be seen to be believed and it's always a special moment to watch our guests lay eyes on the Swiss Alps for the first time."

Travel Director

The best of Switzerland unlocked for you

Experience Switzerland differently. Enjoy one-of-a-kind experiences and uncover local secrets when our friends across the country open their doors to you. Here’s just a sample of the rich experiences you can expect.

Want to explore a Swiss mountain by cable car?

Want to explore Lake Geneva by boat?

Cruise Lake Geneva

On a sunny day, there’s no better way to tour Switzerland than by water. Gaze at the country from its largest lake and learn something new about its shores, choosing a historic paddle boat, passenger ferry or cocktail-sipping sunset cruise.

Discover the 15th-century vineyards of Cave Champ de Clos

The Conne family have been producing wine for centuries in the heart of the UNESCO heritage region of Lavaux. Be hypnotized by rows of terraced vineyards then retire to the stone cellar to taste the vintages they have produced.

Take a horse carriage ride through the Alps and Rosegg Valley

The alps are home to an endlessly romantic trail that can be taken on horse carriage ride. Rug up in blankets for this fairytale experience through alpine forests, arriving at a destination of snow capped mountains and an impressive glacier. The kind of views imagined when dreaming up a Switzerland trip.

Ride up to Stans by Switzerland's oldest mountain railway

Start in Lucerne and travel along tracks from the 1890s, watching villages and views pass by in the window. With wildflower meadows in the summer and snow dusted trees in winter, you will unwind as you wind around the mountains for 30 minutes before reaching the top.

Travel to the heart of Switzerland, Interlaken

The unassuming town of Interlaken is the perfect base to connect with the soul of Switzerland. Explore over 700 hikes which roam into the mountains from your doorstep, with charming isolated villages found sitting between them.

Our top 5 things to do in Switzerland

We'll take you through the pristine natural beauty of this country, with a trip that's filled with moments of awe. Lakes, grapevines and alpine forests prove it's not just the hills that are alive in Switzerland.

Swiss National Museum

There is a reason this is Switzerland's most frequently visited museum of cultural history. Inside, you will immerse in the past and present through some 840,000 objects. From bronze Age bowls to silver knight’s armor, nowhere else will deliver such a rich and comprehensive insight into the Swiss.

Lake Geneva

Charlie Chaplin museum

The property where Charlie Chaplin spent his last years provides an intimate glimpse into the iconic entertainer's life and work. Be moved by a walk through the vast estate, where you will marvel at his original bowler hat and boots, hear tales from friends and touch painstakingly replicated movie sets.

Zentrum Paul Klee

The namesake of this museum is one of the 20th century's most important artists. Step into the space to quietly take in his artworks, you might find yourself lost in the famous cubism inspired 'Insula dulcamara' or colorful jigsaw that the German-Swiss genius was most famous for.

Best museums in Switzerland

There's more to this landlocked country than army knives and chocolate. With Trafalgar, you will gain a deeper understanding of Switzerland through these must-visit museums.

Once a farmers’ breakfast, Rösti is now a plate popular amongst the Swiss. One bite into this crisp baked potato and you will be hooked. Luckily, the country's many regions boast their own versions, offering an excuse to sample many during your tour of Switzerland.

There is more to this classic fare than dipping bread into a pot of melted cheese. It’s a sacred pastime. To the Swiss, fresh bread and bubbling creamy Gruyere is incomplete without one vital ingredient: good company. Indulge in authentic fondue in Switzerland in the company of new friends.

Swiss chocolate

Chocolate aficionados will find no shortage of pleasure in the smooth chocolate of Switzerland. The birthplace of Lindt, Toblerone, Mövenpick and more, a banquet of cocoa will be enjoyed here in the name of culture.

Best food in Switzerland

Baked potato, melted cheese and genuine chocolate. The culinary delights of Switzerland were designed with only the pleasure of taste in mind, and it's an indulgence Trafalgar is only too happy to share with you.

What to pack for Switzerland

People packing for a tour

Even in summer, layers are vital in Switzerland. Temperatures differ throughout through the country and can get particularly crisp in the higher mountains.

A good quality camera

In a place known for pinch me moments, it would be remiss to forget something more than just a smartphone to capture them all.

Swiss Francs

Switzerland may be at the core of Europe, but this country abandoned the Euro many years ago. Though you can still use them in some larger establishments, but it's better to arm yourself with plenty of Francs so you're never caught short.

A phrasebook

A phrasebook with the national languages of German, French and Italian is essential on a tour of Switzerland. If you really can’t spare the space, download them to your Google Translate app offline.

Walking shoes

If your trip is likely to see you traversing the dynamic landscapes of Switzerland, a pair of sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots should be on the packing list.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Good, but there was definitely a lack of information given to folk on the tour. As in what to wear, how strenuous it's going to be ... etc.

"This tour is meant to show you a lot in a short period of time. Some days we visited three cities and would barely get an hour in a destination. For me, this was OK because I'd never been to these places before and wanted to get a sample of life there. Of course, I wish I had more time in each city, but you definitely see a lot of Europe in a two week period. That was ultimately what I hoped to get out of my trip, so it was good for me. You do spend a bit of time on the bus. Buses are not equipped with wifi but most have USB ports for chargers. You are consistently changing guides, which ends up being alright because some guides are so much better than others. (Though a good guide throughout would obviously be ideal.) You also are with people who are participating in other tours. For instance, I was the only person on my bus who was on this specific trip. Also you will likely be on a bus with Spanish speakers and English speakers. The guide(s) do a good job of including both groups in their explanations of the city. Make sure you know your plan from traveling from Rome to Spain as that ended up being tricky for me. Additionally, I really enjoyed the optional activities, and they do end up being an enriching experience for the most part.

"We had a family group of six that did this tour in May 2024. Our guide, Vitalii, was fantastic. His formal education is in history and that was very apparent with his wealth of knowledge. The schedule for the tour was excellent and allowed us to experience a lot of sites in an efficient manner. Several times we were able to visit an attraction when very few people were there with the large tour buses showing up as we were leaving. I would definitely use this company for future tours

Switzerland

Reach new heights

Incredible skiing on the Swiss Alps and delectable Swiss chocolate are only two reasons for visiting Switzerland. Located between Austria, France, Germany and Italy, you can get quite a diverse European cultural experience depending on which region of Switzerland you choose. And though the food, music, art and people themselves are very much influenced by their European neighbors, they are all still uniquely Swiss. You will leave with plenty of memories to savor for a lifetime.

Destination Must-See's

Switzerland mustsee v2

Matterhorn:

World famous and the symbol for Switzerland, this mountain is the most photographed in the world. It faces the four cardinal directions and is the tenth highest mountain in Switzerland, but because it has a pyramid shape it is very challenging to climb. The first ascent was in 1865 and cost the lives of 4 out of 7 alpinists. It gets its German name from the words matte meaning meadow and horn meaning peak.

Switzerland mustsee2 v2

This village is like no other. It lies at the foot of what is probably the world’s most famous mountain. It also is located in an enormous hiking and ski region, making it a great vacation spot, even in the summer. This is a car-free zone vacation spot, making it possible to preserve its historical features as well.

Switzerland ms3

As the capital of Switzerland it has managed to retain its historic features. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It features 4 miles/6 km of arcades, or as the locals like to call it ‘Lauben,’ making it the longest weather-sheltered shopping in Europe. They also hold the seat of Switzerland’s government, many festivals, a bear park, and beautiful historic buildings that line the streets.

Switzerland ms4

This gateway to central Switzerland sits on Lake Lucerne and has a view of the mountain from wherever you are. Aside from the view it has the Chapel Bridge which is one of Europe’s oldest wooden bridges. A tourist favorite is to visit its souvenir and watch shops, which Switzerland is known for.

Destination Must-Do's

Switzerland md1

Swiss Chocolate:

It is only expected that the country that created chocolate is the country that consumes the most chocolate as well. It was created by adding milk to chocolate to try to reduce the cost and make it more palatable, which lead to milk chocolate. Switzerland now has over seven major chocolate companies. The best part is if you are a chocolate lover you can tour these companies and try their many different chocolates.

Switzerland md2

Swiss fondue:

Swiss fondue was created by local villagers with limited access to fresh foods in the winter. They discovered that if you heated the aged cheese with wines, garlic, and herbs then dipped your stale bread it would soften in the flavorful cheese mixture. Families would cook together in one pot and eat by the warm fire, becoming a Swiss winter tradition over time known as fondue.

Switzerland md3

GoldenPass:

This train ride is like a day vacation. You experience two languages, three regions, and eight lakes. The company focuses on journey and comfort not just transportation. It has seven different lines you can choose from, with the most famous being the panoramic that has panoramic windows that allow you to be one with the landscape. The other is the chocolate train which is a first class trip that lets you experience the production of famous Swiss cheese, the creation of Swiss chocolate, and a chance to see its magnificent castle.

Switzerland md4

Glacier Express:

This may be the slowest express train in the world, but for a reason. There is so much to experience on this journey that they slow it down for you. It takes you from Zermatt to St. Moritz. The train ride is an eight-hour panoramic journey. You travel into the Alps, go through 91 tunnels, and 291 bridges.

Expert Advice

diana

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization encourages the identification, protection, and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world. Switzerland has three natural and eight cultural sites that can be visited when in the country.

Switzerland e2

The currency is the Euro in almost all of Europe. In Switzerland, the Swiss Franc is used (CHF). Your personal bank card may work at local ATM machines in the destination you are traveling to and would dispense local currency. Please contact your bank to determine if this option is available.

Switzerland e3

You're in for a treat as you truly savor the local flavors of the Alpine region. In Austria, look for the beef soup -- Rindsuppe -- a clear soup with gold color that is as tasty as it looks! The Tafelspitz is beef boiled in broth, often served with an apple and horseradish sauce. It's one of Austria's most savory dishes.

City: tips for holidays and outings

Recommendation winter, winter holidays, wellness & spa hotels, winter sports resorts, premium panorama trains, winter in the city, matterhorn (4,478 a.s.l.) - symbol for switzerland.

The Matterhorn and Switzerland are inseparably linked to each other. The pyramid shaped colossus of a mountain, which is very difficult to climb, is said to be the most-photographed mountain in the world. The Klein-Matterhorn ("Little Matterhorn"), which can be reached via a funicular, lies adjacent to the Matterhorn.

The Rhine Falls

To stand high above Europe's largest waterfall, feeling the roar and vibration of the water over one's entire body - this can be experienced at the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen. By ship one can reach castles, the Rhine Falls Basin and even the mighty rock in the midst of the waterfall.

On the Top of Europe: A visit to the Jungfraujoch puts a jewel in the crown of any visit to Switzerland.

Château de Chillon

Chillon Castle is located on a rock on the banks of Lake Geneva. The water castle is the most visited historic building in Switzerland. For nearly four centuries Chillon was the residence and profitable toll station of the Counts of Savoy.

Creux du Van

"Creux du Van", a natural rock arena of immense proportions, is located at the border of the cantons of Neuenburg and Vaud. Impressive 160 meter high vertical rock faces surround a four kilometer long and over one kilometer wide valley basin.

Aletsch - the Largest Alpine Glacier

Incredibly immense, incredibly beautiful: the Large Aletsch Glacier is the Alps' mightiest ice flow. And the most popular, for it is easily accessible and is ideally situated for extensive hikes, winter sports and special nature excursions.

Swiss Museum of Transportation

Switzerland’s most visited museum showcases the past, present and future of mobility with interactive and varied exhibits. In addition to the museum, unique attractions found nowhere else in Switzerland, such as the film theatre, planetarium, Swiss Chocolate Adventure and Media World, are just waiting to be discovered.

10,000 years ago, 100 billion cubic metres of rock thundered into the valley. Known as the Flims Rockslide, this event created the Ruinaulta, a canyon-like gorge in the Anterior Rhine Valley that can be reached on foot, over water, by train or by bike.

FAQ Frequently Asked Questions

Can i book my roundtrip in advance.

Yes and advance booking is highly recommended, especially for the busy summer season when demand is particularly high. Packages can be booked easily, online or via one of our travel experts.

What is the best time of year to take the trip?

This depends on your personal preferences. Each season offers something different:

  • Spring (April to May) : Ideal for nature lovers, as landscapes bloom and temperatures are pleasant. There may still be snow at higher altitudes.
  • Summer (June to August) : The best time to enjoy the full splendour of the Swiss countryside, especially if intending to hike or cycle. The weather is warm and days are long however, this is also peak season for visitors.
  • Autumn (September to November) : Great for photography enthusiasts, as colours change to magnificent seasonal shades while the weather remains mild.
  • Winter (December to February) : This season brings magical snowy landscapes and the opportunity to experience Switzerland’s winter sports resorts.

In general, spring and autumn mean pleasant weather, while summer is ideal for those that love sun and outdoor activities. Winter offers a unique opportunity to enjoy snow-covered Alpine landscapes.

Please note that it is only possible to complete the full Grand Train Tour of Switzerland from spring to autumn, due to the seasonal opening of the Gotthard Panorama Express route.

Can I travel with children?

Yes, trains in Switzerland are suitable for passengers of all ages, including families with children but please do note the following important points:

  • Tickets:  Children can benefit from reduced fares, depending on their age. Please contact our travel experts for more specific information about your booking.
  • Entertainment and Activities:  Remember to bring something (books or games) to keep your children occupied.
  • Snacks and Refreshments: The Glacier Express, Goldenpass Express and Gotthard Panorama Express boat all offer catering options but we, nevertheless, recommend that you bring plenty of snacks and drinks for your children.

Are the trains wheelchair accessible?

Yes, the trains are wheelchair accessible. Please contact one of our travel experts to organise your trip.

What is the difference between 1st and 2nd class?

The main differences between 1st and 2nd class are the seat arrangement and comfort. In 1st class, passengers enjoy larger, more comfortable seats with additional legroom and space for luggage. The seating arrangement is usually 2+1, meaning two seats to one side of the aisle and one on the other, offering more privacy. In 2nd class, there are usually two seats on either side of the aisle. Although 2nd class seats are still comfortable, they offer slightly less space and legroom than those in 1st class.

If you’re looking for low crowds and good deals, specific periods let you play on a budget. On the other hand, different seasons feature ideal weather or winter fun. Whatever you’re after, we’ll steer you right on your alpine vacation.

The Alps on a budget or perfect weather? Here’s when to visit Switzerland

As you plan your Swiss vacation, what do you hope to experience? Maybe you just want to be there, no matter the season, and want the best deal to make it happen. You could be a skier or snowboarder, thirsting for alpine adventure. If you’re a food enthusiast, chocolates and cheeses await throughout mountain villages. Each travel season has pros and cons, and we’ll provide the details to point you in the right direction.

  • You’ve probably never heard of some of 2024’s most popular summer vacation spots
  • Sammy Hagar’s latest hot spot is a tropical oasis in Las Vegas
  • The best campgrounds in the U.S. for stargazing and enjoying the night sky

Spring offers low crowds and good deals

From April through mid-June, the shoulder season sees winter crowds disappear and prices drop. With reduced costs on plane tickets and hotel rooms, you’ll have extra cash for a chocolate tour in Geneva or a tram ride up the Matterhorn.

As the snow melts off the peaks and wildflowers bloom, a perfect panorama surrounds your morning hikes (or trail runs). April features average temps in the 60s, with May bringing increased rain. In June, as summer sets in, long, 70-degree days bring all-day refreshment.

In spring, we’d visit Bern, Switzerland’s capital, a UNESCO World Heritage site with historic buildings, numerous fountains, and natural surroundings. After a walk through the city, swimming in the River Aare would offer cool relaxation.

Summer is nice, but crowded and expensive

No matter the travel destination, weather plays a central role in the experience. With summer’s balmy conditions and hiking opportunities, Switzerland’s high season costs extra and brings crowds. Since the snow’s disappeared from the peaks, you can hike to your heart’s content, and experience the high alpine. Take in a music festival or swim in a lake, and wonder if you’ve arrived in paradise.

But those ideal experiences come with a cost, with pricing as much as 50% more than shoulder or low seasons. Not only that, but the country’s beauty can be interrupted by numerous travelers getting their fair share.

We’d visit Lake Geneva, take a cruise on the pristine waters, and then enjoy fondue as the sun sets. Talk about picture-perfect.

Autumn is refreshing and economical

The initial weeks of fall, from mid-September through October, bring brisk air and stunning foliage. Watch the surroundings change as you roam the mountains, and enjoy cooler temps from the 50s to the 70s. As winter inches closer, the alpine chill is a special feeling. Since summer throngs are gone, you can tour villages or take cable cars in peace, take in the scenery, and do as you please.

As a shoulder season, fall lets you travel on a budget for a European getaway that won’t break the bank. That, along with autumn’s weather and sights, make it an excellent time to visit.

Fall is ideal for a panoramic train ride on the Bernina Express , which traverses the 65-meter-high Landwasser Viaduct and passes the Morteratsch glacier. Get your camera ready .

Winter offers exceptional skiing and snowboarding

The Swiss Alps are different. One look at the Matterhorn shows why. The dramatic peak, its eons-old features cutting and jutting into the sky, is the ideal alpine silhouette. Beyond that, Switzerland’s numerous peaks and resorts — like 4 Vallées in Verbier — offer steeps and challenges few others can. If you want to push your limits, a trip there should be on your bucket list.

But with those qualities come popularity, and from mid-November through March, mountain towns are overrun by winter enthusiasts, bringing higher prices and crowded slopes. You could score a deal early in the season, but snow levels might be low, with little terrain available.

We’d head straight for Verbier, and have a guide show us around . At the end of the day, we’d enjoy raclette at Chez Simon, situated right on the mountain.

It’s nice to save money on a vacation . Whether on plane tickets, lodging, or activities, getting more for your dollar is a satisfying feeling. But if you’re after specific things — like skiing, swimming in a mountain lake, or hiking the high alpine — you’ll have to pony up. For those who want to visit Switzerland and spend as little as possible, try spring or fall. But if it were us, we’d save up for a winter journey to Verbier or a summer escape to Lake Geneva. That seems worth it to get the most out of the country’s mountains, culture, and cuisine.

With its mix of spring and summer, June is an ideal time to get away. There’s a lingering freshness in the air, but there’s also a sweet warmth inching in. It’s a time to be outside, experience nature, and take in new places. Not only that, but since peak crowds haven’t arrived, you could score a deal on airfare and lodging.

Iceland is one of the most fascinating countries in the world: an oversized island of fire and ice between North America and mainland Europe in the North Atlantic. While this island is somewhat larger than Ireland, Iceland is the most sparsely populated country in Europe, which means Iceland abounds in open spaces and natural wonders. And with Reykjavík as its cultural center, Iceland touts additional great lures, from a thriving art and music scene to intriguing cuisine and colorful architecture.

One of the country's greatest features has to do with its positioning. Being so far north, Iceland is treated to wildly long days right around the summer solstice. The weather tends to be cool and wet, but it's compensated for by the hyper-extended days. During June, the sun there tends to set around 23:00 (or 11 p.m.) and come up around 4:00 (or 4 a.m.). It's prime time to cross things off your Nordic bucket list, like driving around the whole country via the gorgeous Ring Road or trekking up north to dip in the restorative waters of Mývatn. But when is the best time to visit Iceland? Keep reading and we'll give you a guide. What happens in a year in Iceland?

Italy, with its rich history, beautiful landscapes, and world-famous cuisine, has long been a favorite destination for travelers seeking an unforgettable experience. Amidst its picturesque scenery lie some of Europe’s most captivating natural wonders– the Italian lakes. Whether you are relaxing by the water or embarking on a scenic hike, the lakes in Italy provide a gorgeous backdrop. These are just a few beautiful Italian lakes to add to your bucket list. 1. Lake Garda

Location: Northern Italy Where to stay: Popular towns to stay in include Sirmione, Bardolino, and Malcesine. How to get there: Lake Garda is easily accessible by both car and public transportation. Major airports such as Verona Villafranca Airport and Milan Bergamo Airport are within driving distance, and train services connect nearby cities like Verona and Brescia to the lake’s shores.

5 things I loved about my car-free journey through Switzerland

tour switzerland

Coming from Canada where passenger rail travel leaves… a lot to be desired… getting a taste of the Swiss system was a breath of fresh mountain air.

It wasn’t until I got home from Switzerland that I realised that I hadn’t set foot in a car during the eight days I spent travelling between cities and towns, up mountains and along valley floors. Every leg of our trip was by train, and between the airport train into Zurich to the over-a-century-old rail route to Europe’s highest train station in the Alps, I barely saw a road.

The Swiss rail system’s reputation precedes it, but it lives up to it, too. I live in Canada, and our national passenger rail system has nothing on the extensiveness and efficiency of the Schweizerische Bumsbahnen, aka the SBB, aka Swiss Federal Railways. Here are just five of the reasons I fell in love Swiss trains on Intrepid’s Best of Switzerland trip.

1. The trains really do run on time

You’ve probably heard the rumour that Swiss trains are so punctual you can set your watch to them. I haven’t set a watch in years, but I did pay close attention to our departure and arrival times and didn’t catch a whiff of a delay in all my journeys. In reality, the SBB reported that 92.5 per cent of trains ran on time in 2023 (though, full disclosure, they consider on time to be anything less than a three-minute delay). Compare that to my home country’s latest passenger rail punctuality data from 2022, coming in at a rickety 57 per cent.

tour switzerland

In fact, Switzerland is so confident in its punctuality that one of its rail engineers designed it its own clock back in the 40s. Every station uses the official Swiss railway clock with its minimalist face. Station clocks are synchronised with a master clock that advances the minute hand by one minute at the top of every minute on all of the station’s clocks simultaneously. Yes, they sell replicas of these clocks, and yes, I bought one and hung it in my kitchen, and no, nothing in my house runs on time.

2. There’s a train for everything

Switzerland came down with what they call ‘mountain railway fever’ in the late 19th century when it seemed like everyone who owned a pencil and a napkin had an ambition to build a railway.

The effects of that live on and, as a result, the number of things on rails that could take me places blew me away, and it goes well beyond getting between cities and towns. They go up and down mountains, too, simply because there’s something to look at up there.

We rode the world’s steepest cogwheel train up Mt Pilatus where you can look out over the lakes and valleys around Lucerne. A cogwheel track adds a toothed rail in between the running rails, which helps hoist the train cars up the steep track. The Pilatus track has a max gradient of 48 per cent, and the train cars are built on an angle to accommodate it (so the passengers don’t have to). Why did they build it? Well, I gotta say, the view from up there really is something else.

tour switzerland

Deeper into the Alps, we all opted to head up to Jungfraujoch, aka the Top of Europe. From the village of Lauterbrunnen, we hopped on a train as the sun rose over the peaks and rode across the valley and up the other side to Kleine Scheidegg and then transferred to the Jungfrau Railway, which took us to the highest train station in Europe, at 3454 metres.

Most of the railway runs inside the mountain, including the terminus station. Construction – which some describe as boring – began in the late 19th century, driven partly by economic opportunity and partly by, well… I mean, the views up there. Come on.

Today, a well-touristed visitor centre sits atop the mountain, alongside one of the world’s highest astronomical observatories, the observation deck of which you can reach by elevator for sprawling glacier views. If the prospect of boring a tunnel through a mountain at the turn of the 20th century doesn’t wobble your mind, consider what went into building a multi-storey visitor centre inside the mountain (featuring restaurants, multimedia exhibits and a Lindt store, of course). I still have so many questions.

3. Population density pays off

I’ve been dropping the phrase ‘population density’ into my rave reviews of Switzerland a lot more than I care to admit. Switzerland has over 50 times more people per square kilometre than Canada (though, to be fair, even though we technically have the space to spread out, we tend not to, and Montreal and Zurich have about the same density).

But because Switzerland is so small (relatively speaking), its dense population can support way better infrastructure like all these railways. Plus, the populations that have sprinkled themselves throughout the mountains have created some really picturesque vistas where farmland has to creep up mountainsides outside towns and cities because there’s nowhere else to go. Not to mention all the back gardens you get to peer into from the train as you weave behind and between villages, giving you great insight into everyday Swiss life and garden gnome trends.

4. Perfectly placed train stations in town centres

Save for a few fixtures of the heyday of Canadian rail travel, a lot of train stations sit outside of the downtown core, especially in smaller cities and towns. Not so in Switzerland. Hauptbanhofs had prime real estate in every city, town and village we rolled into, and each was within strolling distance of our accommodation. Even if we couldn’t immediately check-in, we could drop our luggage and head right back out for an orientation walk in the middle of the action. Speaking of luggage, though, I learned the hard way that backpacks are the perfect luggage choice for these European city strolls – just ask the wheel that broke off my ageing wheelie duffle and now calls Lucerne home.

tour switzerland

5. Walkable mountains

Much as I love being on top of a mountain, I’ve never felt any great inclination to climb up them. Beyond the trains that’ll take you to and up the mountains, there’s a whole network of cable cars and gondolas picking up the slack to take you further. My favourite day in Switzerland involved taking a cable car from across the road from the train station in Lauterbrunnen up to Grutschalp for an easy and flat alpine stroll between car-free villages and fields of bell-adorned cows. Had that been too much, there was, of course, an option to take a train across instead. I returned to the village via another cable car and an easy stroll across the valley floor.

A lot of Canada’s best views require a self-propelled approach, and while some may say that makes the view that much better, let me ask you this: have you seen the views in Switzerland?

Heather travelled on Intrepid’s Best of Switzerland trip, now part of Intrepid’s new rail theme , which brings together our favourite trips that feature incredible rail journeys.

How do I get around Switzerland?

There are many ways to get around Switzerland , the two main ways are using public transportation and renting a car. I’ll highlight the best way to get to each destination below. This Switzerland itinerary can easily be used with either a car or by train.

If you choose to get a rental car in Switzerland, I always recommend using this site to compare rates and cars.

If you choose to use public transportation in Switzerland, I recommend getting the Swiss Travel Pass to maximize your time and save you money. The Swiss Travel Pass offers unlimited train rides on most lines, free or discounted gondola rides, and discounts to many attractions though Switzerland.

I find that it’s especially worth buying the Swiss Travel Pass if you are planning to visit Zermatt because the expensive Gornergratt train is quite expensive, and it’s half off with the pass. If you’re comfortable riding trains and buses, I think it’s the best way to travel in Switzerland.

Where do I purchase my Swiss Travel Pass?

You can purchase your Swiss Travel Pass here . Just select the correct number of days for your Switzerland itinerary and check out. The pass begins on your selected date and runs continuously. The Swiss Travel Pass comes in. 3, 4, 6, 8, and 15 day increments.

Swiss Half Fare Card

If you’re unsure of your dates or the amount of time your Switzerland itinerary will be, it might be a good idea to purchase a Swiss Half Fare Card instead. This pass is good for one month and will offer 50% off most trains. There seems to be less of a discount on shorter journeys. I prefer to purchase the more expensive Swiss Travel Pass just for ease of use while I am in the country. But the Swiss Half Fare Card may be a better option if you are only planning on taking several long and expensive rail journeys. You can purchase the Swiss Half Fare Card here .

Renting a Car in Switzerland

If you want a little more freedom during your trip, you may want to consider renting a car in Switzerland . You’ll have the ability to reach some more off-the-beaten-path places that trains can’t reach. Driving in Switzerland is easy, especially if you’re from the US because they drive on the right side of the road.

Download the SBB App for Switzerland Transportation

SBB App – Public transportation in Switzerland is shockingly punctual, clean, fast, and efficient. The SBB app will tell you when and where to get your trains and buses to take you where you want to go. This is the most important app you’ll need in Switzerland if you’re only traveling by public transportation.

I hope this guide to Switzerland transportation will help you get around the country with ease. Be sure to check out the most beautiful places in Switzerland and our Switzerland Itinerary.

There are lots of pros and cons to renting a car in Switzerland and using public transportation. Here’s a good list

Here is a list of pros and cons for traveling Switzerland by train vs. by rental car:

Traveling by Train in Switzerland

  • More scenic views out the window
  • Can relax and enjoy the ride
  • No need to focus on driving/navigation
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Arrive directly in city centers
  • Less flexibility with schedule/stops
  • Can be more expensive
  • Limited luggage space
  • More flexibility with schedule and route
  • Can stop wherever you want
  • Usually cheaper than train
  • More privacy
  • Can carry more luggage
  • Less scenic views
  • Have to focus on driving
  • More planning required for navigation

New to riding a sleeper train in Europe? Here’s what to know

A young woman looks out at the Italian countryside on TrenItalia's Intercity Notte sleeper train from Palermo to Rome.

More climate-friendly option growing in popularity in Europe

• Show more sharing options
  • Copy Link URL Copied!

As more people reconsider how they travel on a warming planet, a small but growing contingent in Europe wants to switch from high-emission, short-haul planes to more climate-friendly sleeper trains.

But for all the climate benefits — plus the enduring romance of overnight train journeys — it’s not always simple building a vacation around them.

Several national railways and private operators have moved in to meet the rising demand, and the result is a patchwork of overnight routes sold at over 30 different websites. Many routes may not run every day, and online ticket aggregators don’t include all countries that have night trains.

“I’ve always gone around on trains and boats and buses, so it was normal for me,” said Cat Jones, founder of the flight-free travel agency Byway. “But friends would say, ‘Oh, that sounds amazing, but no way am I going to plan all that.’”

Sleeper train advocates, however, say the experience and convenience of riding the rails makes them worth any booking difficulty. With patience and a few tips, you’ll never have to deal with airport security lines in the middle of your European holiday.

A Nightjet sleeper train at a station in Vienna, Austria.

Start with a little research

First, make sure routes exist between your desired cities. Back on Track, a European rail advocacy group, maintains a night train database (back-on-track.eu/night-train-list) with all current and soon-to-launch routes on the continent. Just be aware that city names are listed with local spellings, such as Praha for Prague.

Then head to the sleeper train section of Man in Seat 61 , a website run by former rail industry worker Mark Smith that exhaustively explains what to expect ( seat61.com/sleepers.htm) . The site has details on dozens of international routes, down to seat and berth numbers on specific trains — even photos of the food and where to find electrical outlets.

Many operators provide perks like breakfast and free water, and some allow female travelers to book shared spaces only with other women.

Once you’ve found the right route, check Trainline (thetrainline.com) and RailEurope ( raileurope.com/en-us ), which sell tickets on most railways. Or go directly to the operator’s website; all will have an option to switch the language to English.

Decide how much privacy you need

Night trains’ configuration varies by operator, line and carriage. Many trains have a car or two with traditional upright seats selling for as little as 19 euros, but they recline and are much more spacious than an airplane seat.

Other carriages have sleeper cabins with anywhere from one to six beds, which likely fold up when not in use. It’s possible to book an entire cabin for a family or group of friends, but you’ll pay extra.

Sarah Marks, a frequent sleeper train traveler from London, said she was nervous the first time sharing a cabin, but ultimately found it was a great way to meet like-minded travelers. “It’s quite an intimate experience,” she said. “But hand over heart, every single one has been really nice and actually enhanced my experience.”

Plan to book in advance — but not too far in advance

Because most rail companies use dynamic pricing, as airlines do, the price of a ticket likely will rise as the date approaches.

But if you search for tickets now for summer travel, chances are you won’t see the routes available. Many railways do not open ticket sales until two or three months in advance. Several factors influence the timing, but it’s mostly because track maintenance usually is scheduled overnight to minimize commuter disruption.

“With sleeper trains that’s tricky to plan around,” Smith said, noting that he often hears concerns from Americans who like to plan their trips several months in advance.

Be flexible

The most popular routes, such as Paris to Berlin, can sell out or become prohibitively expensive for some travelers during peak times.

Rather than be deterred, travelers should think of rail travel as breaking the mold of point-to-point round trips, said Jones.

“If what people want is not available on that day, do a daytime train and we’ll put you on another sleeper somewhere else,” she said. Because Europe’s rail network is so extensive, there are many ways to get from point A to point B and back again, maybe returning through a city you might not have considered visiting.

“By relying on that network effect,” she said, “there’s always an amazing option as long as you’re flexible.”

Here It Comes: Another Hot Summer in Europe

Extreme heat and other weather challenges are in the forecast this summer, and travel advisers, tourists and local officials are getting prepared.

Europe, the world’s fastest-warming continent, is headed for another scorching summer, meteorologists warn. And travelers, once again, are heading to the hot spots.

Last year, large parts of southern Europe experienced prolonged periods of extreme heat with temperatures reaching 118 degrees and lasting up to two weeks or more. The sweltering conditions upended vacations throughout the summer season as visitors collapsed from heat exhaustion at crowded tourist sites, and wildfires led to evacuations in Greece, Italy and Spain.

“Our computer models are in good agreement that it’s going to be another unusually hot summer, especially during late July through August,” said Todd Crawford, vice president of meteorology at Atmospheric G2 , a weather and climate intelligence firm based in Manchester, N.H. The company expects the magnitude of the heat to be similar to 2022, the hottest summer ever recorded in Europe, with the most anomalous heat projected in the south, in popular countries for travelers like Greece, Croatia and Italy.

Since 1991, Europe has been warming at twice the global average, and 23 of the 30 most severe heat waves in Europe since 1950 have occurred since 2000, with five in the last three years, according to the World Meteorological Organization. The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service said several factors contribute to the continent’s vulnerability, including the proportion of European land in the Arctic — the fastest-warming region on earth — and changes in atmospheric circulation.

Yet despite the forecast and increasing trend of excessive summer heat, demand is still high for destinations where temperatures reached 100 degrees or higher in recent summers. Overall, U.S. demand for travel to Europe has increased since last year, according to the travel site Hopper . Rome, Paris and Athens are among the most searched cities out of billions of annual searches for summer vacations on Kayak and Expedia.

“The destinations are being booked again, and what really characterizes people is how quickly they forget and push back negative experiences,” said Stefan Gössling, a professor who researches tourism and climate change at Linnaeus University in Sweden. “People who were caught in life-threatening situations like the wildfires may reconsider where they travel, but for the broader population, we are not yet seeing a big change in decision-making because of the heat.”

Green spaces and heat officers: Cities adapt

As the summer approaches, popular destinations that were hit hard last year are working on protocols to make residents and tourists safe and more comfortable. In 2021, Athens became the first European city to appoint a chief heat officer to oversee those efforts. One of the first steps was to categorize heat waves by severity, like hurricanes, as an early warning system for the potential impact on human health. It is also naming heat waves to emphasize their potential risks.

“Heat is a silent killer and projections for the coming years show that it will only get worse, so we are redesigning our city and making changes to adapt,” said Elissavet Bargianni, the chief heat officer for Athens. Beyond raising awareness, the city plans to implement additional measures, which include increasing the number of green spaces and creating cool public areas.

For visitors planning to visit Athens this summer, Ms. Bargianni advises using the Extrema Global app that calculates the coolest route for getting from point A to point B according to the current temperature and density of the trees. The city already has several air-conditioned cooling centers that are free.

During last July’s heat wave, the Acropolis was forced to close between midday and the early evening to protect visitors after some of them collapsed from the heat. The ministry of culture could make the same decision this year, Ms. Bargianni said, if the heat is severe.

Heat and tours: Travel advisers get creative

Travel advisers are also factoring heat into flexible itineraries. In cities like Rome, Barcelona, Paris and Athens, they are scheduling sightseeing in the cooler morning and evening hours, and arranging air-conditioned transportation.

“We tend to do activities and tours in the morning, then stop for lunch, and in the mid- to late afternoon you either go back to the hotel to sit by the pool or go to the beach,” said Gary Portuesi, a co-managing partner at Authentic Explorations, a New York-based travel company that specializes in Europe.

If clients insist on taking midday tours, the company will work with local partners to make the experience as comfortable as possible. “If there is a six-hour tour, for example, they will cut it down to four and take them to an air-conditioned gelateria for a break,” Mr. Portuesi said.

It is not only the heat that travel advisers have had to grapple with, but also other unpredictable weather events. Last summer, while some parts of the continent were hot and dry, others were cold and wet. “There was a period during the summer peak when it was hotter in the Dolomites than it was in Sicily,” said Jennifer Schwartz, the Italy-based partner of Authentic Explorations. “The most important aspect of our job is to set expectations about the variables and guide people instead of saying it’s too hot, don’t come.”

Heat insurance?

To help travelers book with more confidence, Sensible Weather, a Los Angeles-based start-up that provides a weather guarantee for vacations and outdoor experiences, has recently added high heat protection to its coverage. When booking through a Sensible partner, travelers will be able to add daily protection and if the temperature exceeds a threshold — usually set between 90 and 100 degrees — they can claim reimbursement. Currently, the insurance is only available in the United States, but, the company said, will gradually be rolled out in Europe and elsewhere.

“The goal of the company is to cover everything that can ruin a trip, and usually it’s rain, but temperature is number two,” said Nick Cavanaugh, the company’s founder who was developing the product while caught in a heat wave in Barcelona last year.

Customers do not need to cancel their trip in order to be reimbursed. Those on package tours are reimbursed for the average daily rate of their entire trip for each day that surpassed the heat threshold. “Our customers can still go on their vacations, but if it’s too hot for some hours of the day and unpleasant to go outside, you can hang out in the air-conditioning and we will reimburse you,” Mr. Cavanaugh said.

Heading to cooler climes

Some travelers who were caught in Europe’s heat waves last summer are seeking cooler destinations this summer in places like Norway, Slovenia, Switzerland, Sweden and Finland. Flight searches for Tromsø, Norway, for example, have increased by 85 percent over 2023, according to Kayak.

Joanna Walker, a 43-year-old recruiter from Boston, was caught in a blistering heat wave with her family in Italy last July and vowed never to return during the summer. She said she had been advised to travel during the shoulder season, but couldn’t because her children were in school.

“We couldn’t even cool off in the pool because there was no shade and the water was hot,” Ms. Walker recalled. “We wanted to see the sights in Florence and have long lunches in the piazzas, but instead we were stuck in our overpriced villas under the air-conditioning.”

This year her family has booked a tour of Norway’s fjords in July, where temperatures linger in the high 60s. “It’s going to be a different vibe to Italy for sure, lots of nature and not as much history, but at least it will be cool enough to experience something.”

Working together with like-minded partners, we can make the world fairer and more prosperous. While the challenges facing Canada are real and rapidly evolving – we’re not alone. These are shared challenges that require shared solutions. Co-operation with international partners, in the G7 and well beyond, is how we build a better future with security, opportunity, and meaningful progress.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced he will travel to Apulia, Italy, from June 13 to 15, 2024, to attend the G7 Summit, before travelling to Lucerne, Switzerland, from June 15 to 16, 2024, to participate in the Summit on Peace in Ukraine.

At the G7 Summit, the Prime Minister will strengthen collaboration to address the most pressing global challenges. He will highlight the importance of defending democracy and democratic values, including by countering foreign interference and mis and disinformation. He will promote fair, inclusive, and dynamic growth anchored in the global energy and digital transitions. This includes the clean energy transition to create jobs, grow the economy and keep the air clean, while ensuring strong labour standards, and respecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples. It also includes promoting the responsible development and deployment of artificial intelligence.

The Prime Minister will discuss ongoing G7 efforts to address geopolitical challenges, including the crisis in the Middle East and support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s ongoing war with a view to achieving just and lasting peace. The Prime Minister will take part in bilateral meetings with leaders from other countries and deepen partnerships on shared priorities. Ahead of Canada hosting the G7 in 2025, the Prime Minister will share our government’s work to create good-paying jobs, grow an inclusive and dynamic economy, and deliver fairness for every generation.

In Switzerland, at the Summit on Peace in Ukraine, the Prime Minister will reaffirm Canada’s support for President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s continued efforts toward a just and sustainable peace. This includes Canada’s co-leadership of the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children, as well as its co-chairing of the Peace Formula Working Group Four on the return of prisoners of war, unlawfully detained civilians and illegally deported children. The Summit will provide a platform for dialogue among nations from different regions of the world on ways to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace for Ukraine.

“The world is facing major challenges, but together, we can tackle them and make it better, fairer, and more inclusive for everyone. I look forward to meeting with world leaders at the G7 and at the Summit on Peace in Ukraine to defend democracy, deepen international partnerships, and put Canadians at the forefront of opportunity.” The Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada
