Blake Shelton Summons ‘Country Music Freaks’ for Headlining 2018 Tour

By Jeff Gage

Blake Shelton may enjoy the comforts of home on his upcoming LP Texoma Shore , but with that album due to be released this Friday, the Voice coach has announced new plans to hit the road early in 2018. The 14-date Country Music Freaks Tour kicks off in February with support from Brett Eldredge, Carly Pearce and Trace Adkins.

Last winter, Shelton made a similar month-long run of shows called the Doing It to Country Songs Tour, but while that trek focused on the West Coast this one will predominantly take place in the Midwest and Southeast. Kicking off February 15th with a show at Tulsa’s BOK Center in Shelton’s home state of Oklahoma, it will stop twice in Texas and once in Los Angeles before wrapping up March 17th at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Shelton also debuted the new song “At the House” from Texoma Shore early this morning. A not-so-subtle ode to enjoying a night in and “losing something black and lacy in the couch” rather than partying with the boys, it’s another breezy slice of domesticity from Shelton to accompany the album’s lead single, “ I’ll Name the Dogs ,” which was released last month. The pull of home is an appropriate theme for an album that was recorded at Lake Texoma on the Texas-Oklahoma border, not far from the singer’s hometown of Ada. Hear “At the House” below.

Texoma Shore is the follow-up to If I’m Honest  and will be released November 3rd on Warner Bros. Nashville.

Blake Shelton Uniting Country Music Freaks on 2018 Tour

Blake Shelton fans can look forward to seeing their favorite star a lot more in 2018 with the announcement of his headlining Country Music Freaks Tour — and he's bringing two of the genre's hottest acts and a longtime friend with him!

Brett Eldredge , Carly Pearce and Trace Adkins will join Shelton for special performances on the 14-date tour, which kicks off Feb. 15 in Tulsa, Okla., and wraps up March 17 in Philadelphia. Adkins is slated to appear with his good friend and "Hillbilly Bone" duet partner for multiple songs during the tour set. This run follows the release of Adkins' 2017 album,  Something's Going On,  which reached the No. 5 spot on  Billboard's  Top Country Albums chart.

Eldredge also scored a chart-topping album in 2017 with his self-titled release, while Pearce cracked the Top 5 with Every Little Thing.

Blake Shelton- March 17, 2018

Calling All "Country Music Freaks": Blake Shelton Announces 2018 Headlining Tour With A Stop At Wells Fargo Center On March 17th

Country superstar Blake Shelton kicked this year off by “Doing It To Country Songs,” and he will jump into 2018 with his fellow “Country Music Freaks” on his just announced headlining tour with a stop at Wells Fargo Center on Saturday, March 17. Shelton will hit the road alongside Brett Eldredge, Carly Pearce and very special guest Trace Adkins.

Tickets go on sale on Friday, November 10 at 10 a.m. exclusively through WellsFargoCenterPhilly.com or by phone at 1-800-298-4200 or in person at the Wells Fargo Center box office.

“The main thing that I look forward to these days, and honestly I always have, is my live performances,” said Shelton. “And even though I’m the first to say that too much time on the road can wear me down, too much time away from the road can break my heart. It’s been a while and I cannot wait to get out there! I think this is going to be my greatest tour yet.”

The upcoming tour will showcase fan favorites along with music from Shelton’s latest project, Texoma Shore. Due this Friday, November 3 and available now for pre-order, the album is led by his quickly rising single “I’ll Name The Dogs.” The romantic tune is approaching Top 10 this week at country radio within two months of impact, with Taste of Country praising “one of the strongest, most compelling melodies of any song [Shelton] has recorded and released in years.” After making its world premiere this morning, Shelton will take another brand new track, “At The House,” to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this evening on NBC at 11:35/10:35c. Download the audio here.

In addition to the headliner himself, the “Country Music Freaks” Tour will feature performances from three of the biggest country music freaks in the business: Shelton’s chart-topping, Platinum-selling label mate Brett Eldredge, People-deemed “new voice of Country” Carly Pearce and Shelton’s “Hillbilly Bone” duet partner and good friend, Trace Adkins. Eldredge brought his 2017 self-titled album to the top of Billboard’s all-genre Top Album Sales and Country Albums charts upon release. With six Country Airplay No. 1 singles under his belt, the singer / songwriter’s latest song “The Long Way” is already proving to be another smash with over 15 million streams and counting. Pearce released her debut album Every Little Thing on Big Machine Records October 13 as the Top 5 title track makes her the only solo female currently ranked this high – and one of only three females to reach Top 10 this year – at country radio.

Adkins, who will join Shelton on stage for multi-song appearances during his set, has enjoyed extensive radio and sales successes throughout his 20-year career.

Added Shelton: “These are some of the best people I’ve had on a tour. Brett Eldredge is going to be there with me. I’ve known that kid for many years now and it’s been fun to see his career grow – he’s a great singer and such a funny guy to be around. He’s ugly, but it just shows you that enough talent can break down those barriers and he’s been able to make it anyway. We’re also going to have Carly Pearce out there, and she’s had a breakthrough with her first hit this year. Then bringing along my longtime friend and brother Trace Adkins – and who knows what’s going to happen with him. To be honest we don’t even really have a plan yet, I just knew we needed to spend a little time together, and what better way than out on the road?”

Shelton is teaming up with CID Entertainment once again to offer VIP Experiences throughout the tour. In 2018, packages will feature new perks including an autographed 'Country Music Freaks' Tour plaque and an exclusive BS'ers Lounge baseball cap. VIPs will also get access to the BS'ers Lounge where Blake will perform an acoustic set and answer fan questions. More details available via www.cidentertainment.com/events/blake-shelton-tour-2018.

"The main thing that I look forward to these days, and honestly I always have, is my live performances," said Shelton. "And even though I'm the first to say that too much time on the road can wear me down, too much time away from the road can break my heart. It's been a while and I cannot wait to get out there! I think this is going to be my greatest tour yet."

The upcoming tour will showcase fan favorites along with music from Shelton's latest project, Texoma Shore . Due this Friday, Nov. 3 and available now for pre-order , the album is led by his quickly rising single "I'll Name The Dogs." The romantic tune is approaching Top 10 this week at country radio within two months of impact, with Taste of Country praising "one of the strongest, most compelling melodies of any song [Shelton] has recorded and released in years." After making its world premiere this morning, Shelton will take another brand new track, "At The House," to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this evening on NBC at 11:35/10:35c. Download the audio here .

In addition to the headliner himself, the "Country Music Freaks" Tour will feature performances from three of the biggest country music freaks in the business: Shelton's chart-topping, Platinum-selling label mate Brett Eldredge, People -deemed "new voice of Country" Carly Pearce and Shelton's "Hillbilly Bone" duet partner and good friend, Trace Adkins. Eldredge brought his 2017 self-titled album to the top of Billboard's all-genre Top Album Sales and Country Albums charts upon release. With six Country Airplay No. 1 singles under his belt, the singer / songwriter's latest song "The Long Way" is already proving to be another smash with over 15 million streams and counting. Pearce released her debut album Every Little Thing on Big Machine Records Oct. 13 as the Top 5 title track makes her the only solo female currently ranked this high – and one of only three females to reach Top 10 this year – at country radio. Adkins, who will join Shelton on stage for multi-song appearances during his set, has enjoyed extensive radio and sales successes throughout his 20-year career.

Added Shelton: "These are some of the best people I've had on a tour. Brett Eldredge is going to be there with me. I've known that kid for many years now and it's been fun to see his career grow – he's a great singer and such a funny guy to be around. He's ugly, but it just shows you that enough talent can break down those barriers and he's been able to make it anyway. We're also going to have Carly Pearce out there, and she's had a breakthrough with her first hit this year. Then bringing along my longtime friend and brother Trace Adkins – and who knows what's going to happen with him. To be honest we don't even really have a plan yet, I just knew we needed to spend a little time together, and what better way than out on the road?"

Tickets for the 14-date run will go on sale on Nov. 10. American Express® Card Members can purchase tickets before the general public beginning Friday, Nov. 3 at 10 a.m. local time through Thursday, November 9 at 10 p.m. local time.

Bellamy Brothers 110318

“I’m really excited about my tour because it’s taking where I came from and the music I listened to growing up, and actually introducing it to a whole new audience,” Shelton said. “I feel like a lot of people might know the Bellamy Brothers’ and John Anderson’s music, but maybe they’re not familiar with who they are as artists. I think that this is going to be a great opportunity for the country music fan base to be re-introduced to these guys and, selfishly, I’m just excited to share the stage with them! It’ll be great to have Trace back out on the road with us, and I can’t wait for one of my newer friends and heroes, Lauren Alaina, to blow these crowds away.”

Blake Shelton Reveals the Epic Diss Toby Keith Once Gave Him on Tour

At the people's choice country awards, blake shelton introduced the country icon recipient toby keith, reflecting on the time the two toured together more than two decades ago..

The boys 'round here are celebrating at the first-ever People's Choice Country Awards .

Blake Shelton took the stage during the inaugural event at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville Sept. 28 to present fellow country music superstar Toby Keith with the Country Icon award . ( See every country star on the red carpet here. )

While honoring the "Red Solo Cup" singer for his decades-long career and his impact on the country music scene, Blake reflected on opening for Toby on a nationwide tour when he was just starting out more than two decades ago—including a hilarious memory of getting dissed one night.

"They say your big break comes when you sign a record deal or your first song comes out. And for me, one of those things was to get the chance to open for Toby Keith," Blake explained. "Back when I was a new artist, I got the chance to go out on the road with Toby and then, night after night, 20,000 fans showed up to see Toby perform and he kept them fat and happy."

And while on the 2004 tour, Blake has one memory that has stuck with him all these years.

"I remember one night, it was after an award show," he recalled, "and Toby had been up for like four or five awards and, man, he didn't win crap that night. I was talking to him after that and I had the nerve—I was so excited to be able to get under his skin—I said, ‘Man, Toby, if I ever make it big enough one day and I get nominated for some awards, I hope it's against you.'"

But Toby had a different reason for saddling up with the young buck on tour.

"I swear, Toby looked at me and he said, ‘You know why I brought you out on tour with me?' And I said, ‘No,'" Blake continued. "And he goes, ‘I wanted to prove to this industry that I don't really need an opening act.'"

All jokes aside, the "God's Country" artist also shared how his fellow Oklahoman shaped his time in music back in the day.

"Watching him, I felt the impact of Toby's music from the anthems that spoke to the bigger things to the songs that are full of humor and energy and the soundtrack to good times," Blake reflected. "Man I was out there with Toby for, it was a long time, like almost two years I think. I finally go the point where I was comfortable enough being around him."

He added, "I love my Oklahoma brother, everybody."

Meanwhile, Toby isn't the only honoree of the night. Wynonna Judd is receiving the first Country Champion Award for her career in country music along with her advocacy throughout the years, including working closely with the Wounded Warrior Project and Habitat for Humanity.

Inside Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton’s Homes, From California to Oklahoma

By Joyce Chen

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton’s homes are places of refuge for the married couple, who are both often on the road for their respective careers. The musicians wed in an intimate ceremony at Shelton’s Oklahoma ranch in 2021, and have both been vocal about their appreciation for lowkey nights away from the limelight. “Gwen and I have done so much traveling and touring and work the first half of our lives that now we’re like, ‘Hey, I’m good to put my sweatpants on at 6 p.m. and watch Ozark eight times,’” Shelton told People in 2022 . “That’s our life now, and we love it.”

Shelton and Stefani famously met as coaches on NBC’s hit singing competition The Voice in 2014. At the time, they were each married to other people—Shelton to fellow country singer Miranda Lambert, and Stefani to rocker Gavin Rossdale. Both were going through tumultuous times in their respective relationships, and both filed for divorce from their spouses in 2015. In late 2020, after spending the first part of the pandemic quarantined together with Stefani’s three children at Shelton’s ranch, the pair revealed that they’d gotten engaged . “Hey @gwenstefani thanks for saving my 2020… And the rest of my life,” Shelton captioned a photo of the pair smooching. “I love you. I heard a YES!” After shedding their previous properties, the couple now split their time between a mansion in the San Fernando Valley and Shelton’s sprawling country ranch. Take a peek inside the places these two call home.

Stefani’s Beverly Hills mansion

In 2006, Stefani and Rossdale had been married for about four years when they picked up what would come to be their family home for the better part of a decade— a $13.25 million mansion in Beverly Hills . The couple worked with decorator Kelly Wearstler to completely outfit the 15,000-square-foot residence with the sort of punk-rock, eclectic aesthetic one might expect from two rockers. The property included a black-and-white covered walkway, with the same patterned marble flooring continuing inside. A black marble double-sided fireplace separated a brightly colored living room from the formal dining room, and even the kitchen boasted black-and-white striped walls. The residence featured seven bedrooms and 10 bathrooms, as well as a movie theater, a 1,500-square-foot home gym, a guesthouse, a children’s playground, a chicken coop , and an infinity pool. The couple originally listed the property for $35 million following their split , but sold it for $21.65 million in 2019 .

Shelton’s Tennessee home

Shelton and Lambert married in 2011 and purchased a $2.258 million home in Brentwood, Tennessee, two years later, in 2013. The former couple’s property was located about 20 miles outside Nashville, and comprised a 10,627-square-foot dwelling situated on nearly an acre of land on the Arnold Palmer Signature golf course. The megamansion featured five bedrooms and eight bathrooms, with a rustic, elegant aesthetic. Amenities included a media room, a lounge with a wet bar, and a spacious game room in the basement with another bar. Outdoors there was a tennis court, a fitness center, and a pool and spa. Shortly after the pair announced their split, they sold the property for $2.25 million in 2017.

Lake Texoma estate

Shelton has several properties in his home state of Oklahoma, including one on Lake Texoma, a body of water that sits, appropriately, between Oklahoma and Texas. Stefani has shared photos and videos of her and her three sons spending time there as far back as 2018, but it’s unclear how long Shelton has owned the property. The lakehouse is where Shelton, Stefani, and her boys spent much of their time during the beginning of the pandemic, and it includes a Hawaiian-inspired home , complete with palm trees, thatched roofs, and a large infinity pool overlooking the lake. The rest of the property features fields and horses for the boys to explore and revel in nature. “We get away from everything [in LA], and we’re just us ,” Shelton told People of escaping with Stefani and the whole family to Oklahoma. “It truly does feel different. That’s where I feel the most comfortable, happy and safe.”

Encino residence

In May 2020, Shelton and Stefani purchased a $13.2 million estate together in Encino, California. The 13,000-square-foot property sits on a 1.6-acre lot tucked right up against the foothills. The newly built home was sold in an off-market deal, so few details are available, but the dwelling reportedly stands three stories tall and the property has a four-car garage. Stefani has shared various videos from within the home over the years, giving fans tiny glimpses at eye-catching features like marble walls, zebra-print rugs, and large framed photos of her children (and Blake, of course!).

Oklahoma ranch

The inside of Ole Red, Shelton’s bar in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, not far from his ranch

In 2021, the couple wed in a secret ceremony in a small chapel reportedly built on Shelton’s Ten Point Ranch just for the occasion. By then, Shelton had owned the 1,300-plus-acre Oklahoma ranch for nearly a decade, and he and Stefani had reportedly built a custom sprawling white-and-gray mansion about one mile away. Situated near Tishomingo, Oklahoma, the home sits on a hill in front of a lake, boasting a decidedly Southern vibe with some Victorian flair. Aerial images of the dwelling reveal a gray roof with four chimneys, white Roman columns, a large front porch, and a balcony on the upper deck. The main house is estimated to measure somewhere around 15,000 square feet . A semi-detached small stone house situated just off to the side could be used as a guest house. Not much else is known about the ultra-private estate, but Stefani did share a tiny glimpse into the couple’s laid back home life in a TikTok video in 2023 , in which she and Shelton drive around what looks to be the sprawling ranch. Ten Point Ranch was put up for sale in 2019 , so it’s not clear how much of the property Shelton still owns, though he does still own Ole Red bar, a restaurant and merchandise store nearby.

Tickets and VIP experiences (information below) for “Friends & Heroes 2019” will go on sale November 9 at 10:00 a.m. Blake Shelton Fan Club members American Express® Card Members can purchase tickets before the general public beginning Friday, November 2 at 10:00 a.m. local through Thursday, November 8 at 10:00 p.m. local.

VIP experiences will be available throughout the 2019 tour with premium perks ranging from a great seat on the floor to exclusive merchandise. The BS'ers VIP Lounge will also return, including the opportunity to pose in Shelton’s chair from The Voice, plus he will play a private acoustic set in select cities. Blake Shelton VIP Experience details are available at https://www.cidentertainment.com/events/blake-shelton-tour/ .

Fans can hear Shelton on country radio with his Top 15 and climbing single “Turnin’ Me On.” The “smoldering, mid-tempo number about a seductive flame” (Rolling Stone) follows smash hits “I Lived It” and “I’ll Name The Dogs,” the latter of which notched him the 25th No. 1 single of his career and recently earned its RIAA Gold certification. Shelton has already taken the single to major television stages on Late Night with Seth Meyers, TODAY, the 2018 CMT Awards and more. He is also back as a coach for his 15th season on NBC’s The Voice.

“Turnin’ Me On” hails from Shelton’s chart-topping Warner Bros. / Warner Music Nashville album Texoma Shore. In the week following album launch, he became the first artist in Country Aircheck / Mediabase history to have six songs chart simultaneously. It became his sixth record to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and marked his 11th all-genre Top 10.

In 2017, Lauren followed up her No. 1 debuting first album, Wildflower, with the release of the critically-acclaimed Road Less Traveled. The album landed on multiple end-of-year “Best Of” lists including Billboard, Rolling Stone and Amazon, and it became the top-streamed female country album release of the year. Praised as “full of life lessons and uplift” (PEOPLE), the collection of 12 songs all written by the young star includes Lauren’s first No. 1 hit, title track “Road Less Traveled.” The “sassy Southerner with killer pipes” (PARADE) has shared the stage with superstars including Jason Aldean, Alan Jackson, Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan and Martina McBride. ABOUT BELLAMY BROTHERS Howard and David continue to prove that the trail they’ve ridden to fame has been as unique as their music itself—music that is now celebrating more than 40 years of success. The road that started on the pop music charts in the ‘70’s, took a winding turn into country music in the ‘80’s, paving the way for duos to come, such as Brooks & Dunn, Montgomery Gentry, Big & Rich and The Judds. “If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body (Would You Hold It Against Me),” originally scrawled on a dinner napkin by David, rocketed them to the top of the country charts the way “Let Your Love Flow,” had done in the pop market just a few years earlier. It proved to be the first of a string of 14 No. 1 singles in the U.S. alone. They’re the only U.S. country music act who've toured in India, Sri Lanka, New Caledonia and Qatar. The Bellamy Brothers hold the record in both the Academy of Country Music (ACM) and the Country Music Association Awards (CMA) for the most duo nominations. Numerous Grammy nods have also been directed toward the brothers. The Bellamys are also opening up their lives to television audiences with their new reality show, “Honky Tonk Ranch.” Each episode of “Honky Tonk Ranch” captivates viewers by the unpredictable misadventures the Bellamys face while balancing their globe-trotting touring schedule while running their sprawling family ranch in south Florida. “Honky Tonk Ranch” is executive produced by David Bellamy and directed, shot and edited by Derrek Kupish, CEO/founder of dkupish productions. “Honky Tonk Ranch” airs Sundays at 8:30 p.m. ET / 7:30 p.m. CT on The Cowboy Channel. ABOUT JOHN ANDERSON The story of John Anderson is the true-to-life, yet larger-than-life, saga of one of the most dramatic career turn-arounds of the 1990's.It's the story of just reward for a singer who originally took country music by storm and helped keep it true to its roots back in the early '80's. His memorable hits from that musical era included “Wild and Blue,” “I'm Just An Old Chunk Of Coal,” “1959,” “I Just Came Home To Count The Memories,” “Black Sheep” and “Swingin'.” “Straight Tequila Night,” the lead-off single from 1992’s Seminole Wind went to number one across the board on every country chart, and spawned another run of hits in the decade to follow such as “Money In The Bank,” “I’ve Got It Made,” “I Wish I Could Have Been There,” “Let Go Of The Stone,” “Bend It ‘Til It Breaks,” “Mississippi Moon” and “Somebody Slap Me.” John Anderson… an influence to many of today’s country artists, a colorful character and truly a country music treasure!

ABOUT TRACE ADKINS Towering baritone Trace Adkins has sold more than 11 million albums and charted more than 20 singles in his 25 years in Nashville, a remarkable run for one of country music’s most easily identifiable stars. The Louisiana native recently released his 12th studio album, Something’s Going On, on BBR Music Group / Wheelhouse Records. A three-time GRAMMY Award nominee, Adkins has won three Academy of Country Music Awards, including the 2009 Single of the Year Award for “You’re Gonna Miss This” and Vocal Event of the Year with Blake Shelton for “Hillbilly Bone” in 2010. The Grand Ole Opry member is also an author and spokesman for the Wounded Warrior Project and The American Red Cross, for whom he raised more than $1.5 million dollars as winner of NBC’s All-Star Celebrity Apprentice. In recent years, Adkins has performed for our service members across 12 USO Tours. In his 2007 autobiography, A Personal Stand: Observations and Opinions from a Freethinking Roughneck, Adkins recounted his rise to fame, brushes with death, and battles with personal demons. Adkins has also acted in multiple films and television shows, playing a tough-as-nails biker in The Lincoln Lawyer (starring Matthew McConaughey), a desperate father in Deepwater Horizon (starring Mark Wahlberg) and a wise oracle of a tattoo artist in the family friendly film Moms' Night Out (starring Patricia Heaton, Sean Astin, Sarah Drew). His most recent role was that of MercyMe’s real-life manager, Brickell, in the box office smash “I Can Only Imagine.” The film was the third biggest selling movie on its opening weekend in America. Miranda Lambert Avoided Ex Blake Shelton at ACM Awards

Miranda Lambert Avoided Ex-Husband Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani at 2024 ACM Awards: ‘Safe Than Sorry’

Taylor Swift Is Having 'Separation Anxiety' With Travis Kelce

It was date night for Miranda Lambert and husband Brendan McLoughlin at the 2024 ACM Awards! However, the “Bluebird” singer avoided ex-husband Blake Shelton and his wife, Gwen Stefani , to be “safe than sorry” at the event held on Thursday, May 16.

“Miranda may not have anything against Blake, but she’s also not looking for any awkward run-ins with her ex. She does avoid him and Gwen at these functions because she feels it’s better to be safe than sorry,” a source told In Touch one day after the ACMs. “It’s just a matter of not wanting to create a situation that could ultimately be taken out of context or misconstrued.

That said, the source revealed that Miranda, 40, “wouldn’t have a problem” saying hello to Blake, 47, and Gwen, 54, at a non-publicized event.

All eyes were on Miranda when she arrived at the ACMs . The “House That Built Me” singer wore a sexy black dress with a pungling open neckline and high thigh slit. Miranda paired the garment with a thin turquoise medallion belt, matching earrings, a silver clutch and open-toe wrap-up heels. Brendan, 34, accompanied his wife on the red carpet as he donned an elegant black suit and white shirt.

Blake and Gwen walked the carpet before Miranda. The pair rocked funky Western outfits for the evening. The “God’s Country” singer upped his signature dark denim pants and black dress shirt ensemble with a sweet jacket with brown leather shoulder and chest pieces. The No Doubt singer wore a feather embellishment outfit that exposed her legs, which were dressed in fishnet stockings.

It’s nearing one decade since Blake and Miranda called it quits on their marriage in 2015. Later that year, Blake started dating Gwen, as both were starring as coaches on The Voice and going through divorces at the time. They tied the knot in 2021.

Miranda dated Anderson East and Evan Felker before meeting Brendan in November 2018. The pair quickly fell in love and secretly got married in January of the following year.

In 2020, a source exclusively told Life & Style that Miranda had been swooning that the retired police officer was “ the most romantic guy she’s ever met.”

Ahead of the 2024 ACMs, the “Tin Man” vocalist shared her No. 1 marriage rule with Brendan.

“We just talk it out,” Miranda told People on May 16. “Whatever it is, we talk about everything. And I think communication is super important, especially because women, we expect men to know what we’re thinking and they don’t. We got to tell them.”

Luke Combs crushes 2024 stadium concert tour kickoff at Milwaukee's American Family Field

blake shelton tour 2018

Luke Combs took to the stage in Milwaukee Friday like a bear roaring out of hibernation.

"First show back in five months — here we go," the country superstar cheered after the third song for the kickoff of his "Growin' Up and Gettin' Old Tour" at American Family Field. The tour's second show, for the only the second time in the city's stadium concert history, includes another night at the Milwaukee Brewers' ballpark Saturday.

Combs clearly relished being back in tour mode, roaming all over the stage and runways, crooning and belting until his face turned heirloom-tomato red for show starters "Must've Never Met You," "She Got the Best of Me" and "Lovin' On You" — the latter two among 13 No. 1 Billboard Country Airplay chart-toppers that made Friday's 27-song setlist.

But I'd wager there were a whole lot of Combs fans in Milwaukee Friday who were more excited for this show than he was.

The full-volume singalongs were Exhibit A in that argument, but some historical context is important.

Milwaukee is spoiled by the sheer volume of country A-listers who routinely come to town (Dan + Shay were here last week, and Tim McGraw is going to be here next week). Combs, too, came through early in his career for three shows at the Rave and the late Northern Lights Theater; he also opened for Blake Shelton at Summerfest in 2018 and made a Farm Aid appearance at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in 2019.

But that's it. As his trophy case filled up, as the hits kept coming, as he moved on up to stadium headliner status, Combs — very much still at the top of the A-list with a leading eight ACM Award nominations announced this week — had yet to do a major Milwaukee headlining show.

Until this weekend, when he rewarded Milwaukee fans' patience with an impassioned, hits-loaded show and a couple of custom nods to the city — from the blue Brewers ballcap that served as the signature piece of his humble concert ensemble to the lyrical swaps of "Milwaukee" into a handful of songs. That didn't quite work as a sub for Panama as he sang about deep sea fishing for "When It Rains It Pours" Friday — but the cheering crowd made it clear the gesture was appreciated.

And the Milwaukee fans adored the beer-centric portion of Friday's program. Fans got to vote for one of three songs via text to make the setlist Friday, and "Beer Can" beat out "Don't Tempt Me" and "Memories Are Made Of." He paid his respects to hometown favorite Miller Brewing — possibly displeasing any American Family Insurance execs in the crowd when he suggested he still thought of the Milwaukee Brewers stadium as Miller Park — and shotgunned a can of Miller Lite during "1, 2 Many."

And of all the big hits Combs played Friday night, "Beer Never Broke My Heart" had one of the most heartfelt singalongs.

That, and his cover of Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car." The biggest hit of his career, Combs' take is pretty straightforward, letting Chapman's beautiful lyrics and melodies lead the way. But there's still clearly something special about his version, isn't there?

It's the same thing, Friday's show indicated, that has made Combs' such a superstar.

As a songwriter, as a storyteller, he's as polished as any of his peers in heavy rotation on country radio. But there's more soul and vulnerability in his voice, with just a touch of grit, than most of his centrist country star contemporaries.

So Combs, a back-to-back CMA Awards Entertainer of the Year recipient, was as expected a likable, stadium-electrifying party host.

But his ability to make the stadium filled with 41,000 to 44,000 feel small, to make songs feel personal in that space, that was his greatest strength Friday — whether he was crooning "This One's for You" alone on electric guitar while his seven-piece band took a breather, or tenderly belting "Better Together" accompanied by pretty melodies on a piano.

But the most intimate and moving stretch of the night included "Love You Anyway," "Forever After All" and "Beautiful Crazy," which Combs said were inspired by his wife Nicole Hocking, who was in attendance Friday. Combs prefaced the song singing her praises, including how she helped him with his daily anxieties — and expressed remorse for missing the birth of their second son last year while he was on tour in Australia. Calling it the best and worst day of his life, Combs choked up, took a beat, and wiped tears from his eyes. And then he poured all the emotion, all the gratitude that he felt in that highly vulnerable moment into those songs.

As the show hit the hour-and-50-minute mark Friday, and Combs more than earned the right to head backstage for some family time, he struggled to peel himself away from the stage.

Nine minutes after Combs sang the final lyrics of the night's final song, "The Kind of Love We Make," the seats across the stadium were largely empty. But the pit was still full of fans, and Combs was still on that stage, signing autograph after autograph after autograph.

Cody Jinks, Charles Wesley Godwin and the Wilder Blue opened Friday night's Luke Combs concert

Cody Jinks was a standout at the Harley-Davidson Homecoming Festival in Veterans Park last summer , fueled by a hellbent desire to win over the crowd as the event’s lone country act. As the primary opener Friday at a big ol' country show, that kind of pressure was off. And, consequently, Jinks’ fire didn’t burn as brightly, despite solid renditions of tunes like “Fast Hand” and “Mamma Song” aided by a honky-tonk-tuned band.

Immediately winning points with a customized Brew Crew jersey, singer-songwriter Charles Wesley Godwin turned out to be the most animated of Friday's openers, storming the catwalk and banging his head for “Hardwood Floors.” But even in “stadium mode,” Godwin brought intimacy and tenderness to tearjerkers like “Miner Imperfections,” which he dedicated to his father. Godwin may not be at the level of his good friend Zach Bryan yet ( who he opened for at Summerfest last year ), with stadiums full of people mesmerized by every word, but Friday’s set suggested it could be in the cards. Next up for Godwin in Milwaukee: a headlining set at Summerfest’s Briggs & Stratton Big Backyard June 28, which could prove to be too small a stage for his fanbase.

Alt-country act the Wilder Blue started off the night with a gentle but effective rendition of the national anthem, then kept things mellow for Eagles cover “Seven Bridges Road” and “I’m Your Man,” a new single out Friday that, played live, was more blue-cool than red-hot swagger. The polite but understandably sleepy crowd would have to wait for something, well, wilder.

6 takeaways from Luke Combs' Milwaukee concert Friday

  • At the risk of ruining this for everyone catching a concert at American Family Field in the future (including myself): I once again followed Journal Sentinel reporter Claire Reid's traffic-avoiding tips and drove into the stadium lots from Blue Mound Road. I first hit the brakes at 5:28 p.m., and I was parked by 5:41 p.m. The Journal Sentinel splurged on premium parking this time out, so that cut down on my parking time, but I still was shocked at how quickly I got in. But getting out, there's really nothing drivers can do to avoid that headache. People started filing out in large numbers around 10:50 p.m., but the drive out of the lots around me didn't really clear up until about 12:10 a.m.
  • A friend texted me a photo from his seats at Friday's show — with a massive, suspended speaker stack blocking a good portion of the stage, even though his tickets weren't classified as "obstructed view." He debated with customer service to no avail and embraced a positive attitude, and I gathered he was still able to see Combs on the screens clearly and when he'd walk the stage. But given the complications getting to the show and the cost, it's too bad my friend and others seated near him had to deal with that.
  • Beyond "Fast Car," there were other covers Friday, including a stirring take of Ed Sheeran's "Dive," a rendition of Brooks & Dunn's "Brand New Man," and a medley of three songs with a few of Combs' bandmates taking lead vocals: Shania Twain's "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?," Train's "Drops of Jupiter" and Dierks Bentley's "What Was I Thinkin'?"
  • Combs covered a whole lot of hits, but not every one of his Billboard Country Airplay chart-toppers made the setlist. Left out Friday: "Even Though I'm Leaving," "Does to Me" and "Doin' This." But it was worth cutting one of those to make sure he added unreleased fatherly love song "The Man He Sees in Me" Friday.
  • A head's up: Combs’ openers Friday won’t be the same openers Saturday. Expect a more country radio vibe with (in order of appearance) Colby Acuff, Drew Parker, Mitchell Tenpenny and Jordan Davis. And if you get to the lots by 3 p.m., you can see two more acts — Ryan Larkins and Graham Barham — at the Third Base Plaza at American Family Field.
  • Most interesting conversation from the pit: A woman near the stage yelled at a security guard, “Next time I have to pee you’re coming with. That was (expletive) brutal coming back in here.” Understandably, the security guard looked horrified.
