I was lucky enough to visit this stunning region three times already and I was absolutely blown away by its beauty and charm every single time. If you’re planning a trip here, you’re definitely in for a treat!

In this article, I’ll share my top recommendations for things to do in Lake Como, from exploring charming towns and visiting gorgeous lakeside villas to cruising the lake and indulging in delicious Italian food.

Best Things to Do in Lake Como You Can’t Miss

1. wander through the streets of bellagio.

Bellagio is one of my all-time favorite towns in Lake Como . With its picturesque streets, colorful buildings, and stunning views of the lake, it really looks like it came straight from a postcard.

There are many fantastic things to do in Bellagio , but strolling along the winding cobbled pathways just never gets old, and I could happily spend hours doing this every time I visit.

One of my favorite places is the waterfront promenade which is the perfect place to catch your breath and get some peace. It’s especially beautiful when the flowers are in full bloom!

The Old Town of Bellagio is the kind of place where you won’t be able to put your camera away. Traditional Mediterranean buildings in every shade of pink, orange, and yellow, flower-filled balconies, and cozy cafes line the streets, each more beautiful than the last.

This is also where you’ll find Salita Serbelloni, a stunning street that you’ll instantly recognize as it’s among the top things to see in Lake Como.

It features in every other picture you’ll see from this part of Italy, but there’s nothing like seeing it with your own eyes.

2. Tour the famous Villa del Balbianello

Both Star Wars and James Bond have used Villa del Balbianello as a filming location, which is a testament to how incredible this centuries-old mansion is.

Located on the lakefront in the tiny village of Lenno, Villa del Balbianello is oh-so-elegant inside and is home to perfectly maintained gardens, so it’s no surprise that it’s become a popular wedding venue.

You can also visit the inside of the villa if you’re interested in history and architecture.

But even if you don’t go inside, a stroll around its gardens is one of the best things to do in Lake Como. You’ll find centuries-old trees, beautiful flowers, and stunning views of the lake from different vantage points.

And let’s not forget about that famous balcony overlooking the lake, where you can channel your inner Anakin Skywalker or James Bond. It was so unreal to see it in person and I definitely recommend adding this to your Lake Como itinerary .

3. Discover the town of Varenna

Towns like Varenna almost look too amazing to be real, so much so that I felt like I was living in a dream the entire time I was there. For a town so small, you can surprisingly still find lots of things to do in Varenna .

Villa Monastero is Varenna’s biggest claim to fame, but this small village brings so much more to the table.

My personal favorite is the Passeggiata degli Innamorati, a short little walkway right along the water’s edge that you have to check out.

Other spots to explore include the Villa Cipressi and the Church of St. George, and if you’re feeling like hitting the great outdoors, you can hike up to the thousand-year-old Castello di Vezio, but I have more on that a little later.

Even if you’re short on time, a quick visit to the Old Town and lunch on the waterfront is a wonderful way to spend a few hours.

My favorite place to get some drinks and appetizers is at Bar Il Molo, which has an amazing terrace overlooking the lake.

4. Explore Villa Carlotta

The only spot that I think can rival Villa del Balbianello is the regal Villa Carlotta , a huge three-story property with its very own botanical gardens in Tremezzo.

Much like Villa del Balbianello, Villa Carlotta has been renovated into a museum filled with sculptures, paintings, and ornate furniture from the last few centuries.

But the real draw of Villa Carlotta is its expansive gardens. They’re much larger than other villas in Lake Como and have an incredible collection of flowers and plants from around the world.

Make sure to stop at the lakeside gates to witness one of the most jaw-dropping views of Lake Como. It’s no wonder the original owners chose this location for their summer house!

Getting tickets to Villa Carlotta is easy and can be done at the entrance or online. The ticket includes the gardens and the villa, so you can explore at your own pace.

5. Take a ferry ride across Lake Como

One of my favorite memories from my trips to Lake Como is taking a public ferry ride across the lake. It’s definitely the best way to see all the different towns and charming villas along the shore.

All of the main towns are connected by frequent ferries, so moving from place to place is quite straightforward and usually pretty quick.

Not to mention that it’s super affordable! Shorter routes like Bellagio to Varenna can cost as little as €5, and even if you’re traveling from Como to Bellagio which is almost 2 hours, it’ll only set you back around €10.

You can check the official Navigazione Laghi website for the schedules and fares, and I also recommend buying your tickets online, especially during the peak season.

6. Stroll around Menaggio

Menaggio is just as picturesque as the likes of Bellagio and Varenna but is noticeably quieter and has a lovely laidback way of life. It’s the perfect place to go if you want to relax and enjoy some peace.

The town features a lovely promenade with views of the lake and mountains, perfect for an afternoon walk. You can also find excellent restaurants serving up delicious Italian cuisine in Menaggio.

One of my favorite things to do in Menaggio is to sit at one of the cafes along the waterfront, especially around Piazza Guiseppe Garibaldi, and take in the stunning views while sipping on an Aperol Spritz. It’s pure bliss!

There’s not as much to do in Menaggio as in some of the neighboring towns, but that’s part of why it’s so peaceful and easygoing.

7. Tour Villa Monastero

Varenna’s most popular attraction, Villa Monastero is a must-visit when in Lake Como. This former monastery has been transformed into a museum and botanical garden, making it an ideal spot for history lovers and nature enthusiasts.

While the museum is absolutely worth visiting, it was the gardens that really took my breath away. Stretching for almost 2 km (1.25 miles), every corner of the gardens is immaculate, vibrant, and steeped in history.

Strolling through the gardens was undoubtedly one of my favorite things to do in Lake Como!

Even if you’re not usually one for museums, I highly recommend visiting Villa Monastero for its incredible gardens alone.

However, if you have the time, I suggest buying the combined ticket to visit both the villa and the gardens for a well-rounded experience.

8. Take a walk through Orrido di Bellano

One of the most unique and lesser-known spots in Lake Como is Orrido di Bellano, a natural gorge formed by the Pioverna River.

The walk through the gorge is truly breathtaking as you follow a wooden walkway through tunnels, over bridges, and past waterfalls. It’s unlike anything else you’ll see in Lake Como and definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

What I found remarkable about Orrido di Bellano was how close it is to Bellano town, as it feels like it’s tucked away miles from the center. In reality, a 5-minute stroll from the heart of the town will get you right to the entrance.

Though Orrido di Bellano is quite well known, many visitors often overlook it, and I can’t understand why. It’s also just a 5-minute train ride from Varenna, so it’s very easy to get to.

9. Head out on a private boat tour

Although seeing Lake Como from a ferry or the shore is fantastic, nothing beats experiencing it on a private boat tour. It’s undoubtedly one of the best ways to take in all the beauty and charm of this stunning lake.

You can rent a boat yourself (most boats don’t require a license) or hire a driver to take you around.

Like most private tours, these tend to be significantly more expensive than classic guided trips, but if you’re traveling with a group, it can be quite affordable.

Aside from the obvious beauty, one of my favorite things about taking a private boat tour is that you have complete control over your itinerary. You can stop wherever and whenever you want for photos or to take a dip in the crystal-clear waters.

There are lots of options, such as this private 2-hour tour  with your own captain, or you can don the captain’s hat yourself and  rent a boat for 2 hours  which gives you the ultimate freedom to explore on your own.

If you’re staying in Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, or Tremezzo, this luxurious Lake Como boat tour will be the best option for you.

Alternatively, you can also find a bunch of skippers offering private excursions from each of the main towns, so it’s possible to do this activity at the last minute if it’s not too busy.

10. Explore the ruins of the Castello di Vezio

In terms of more outdoorsy things to do at Lake Como, it’s hard to beat the hike to the Castello di Vezio. The trail will take you around 30 minutes to complete, so it’s a relatively short but steep hike.

Once you reach the top, you’ll be greeted by spooky ghost statues scattered around the grounds, 12th-century ruins, and some of Lake Como’s best views. Anyone with an interest in wildlife will also enjoy checking out the collection of birds of prey that reside here.

This castle has lived many lives, including serving as a military outpost during World War II, and you can read up on the background through the information boards at the top.

As it’s a steep hike, I recommend wearing suitable shoes and bringing plenty of water. I stupidly did this hike in sandals and it was horrible to get down on the slippery paths so I wouldn’t recommend that!

11. Stroll through the botanical gardens at Villa Cipressi

Another stunning garden to explore on Lake Como is at Villa Cipressi in Varenna. This gorgeous villa has a beautiful terraced garden with incredible views of the lake.

Villa Cipressi now operates as a hotel and it’s definitely one of the most stunning Lake Como hotels with lake views !

The building itself dates back to the 15th century and retains all its old-world charm through its outdoor patio, luxury guestrooms, and traditional decor. Sadly, only hotel guests are permitted inside the property.

However, the botanical gardens are open to the public and are just as sensational, packed with hundreds of plant species in the prettiest of surroundings. It’s a lovely place to spend an afternoon, especially if you’re looking for a quieter spot away from the busy towns.

12. Try some watersports on the lake

Lake Como is the perfect place for a relaxing getaway, but it also has plenty to offer for travelers who like to get their adrenaline pumping.

Wakeboarding, windsurfing, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding are just some of the watersports offered along the lake, and the calm waters make it much less daunting for first-timers.

When the warmer weather comes around, towns and villages like Bellagio, Varenna, and Lenno operate a ton of exciting watersports, and many hotels have the likes of jet skis and kayaks available to rent.

This is a fantastic way to experience the lake from a different perspective and add some excitement to your trip.

13. Enjoy a funicular ride up to Brunate

The town of Como is linked to the nearby village of Brunate by a funicular railway that’s been in operation since the late 1800s.

Brunate lies 500 meters (1,640 ft) above Como, making it an excellent spot for panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

The journey itself only takes around 7 minutes, and during peak seasons, it runs roughly every 15 minutes. After you land in Brunate, you’ll have the Phare de Volta lighthouse and quaint churches like Parrocchia Sant’Andrea Apostolo to explore.

We opted to visit for sunset and I couldn’t recommend it enough. The sky lit up in the prettiest shades of pink, orange, and yellow, with the lake sparkling below us. It was a truly magical experience!

14. Explore the historic center of Como

Como is the capital of the Province of Como, and I’ve always found this city to be terribly underrated.

It’s much larger than cute villages like Bellagio and Varenna, but it has so much to offer in terms of history, culture, and nightlife.

You’ll have no problem catching a ferry to Como for the day, as it boasts fantastic connections to most of the smaller towns, but spending a few nights here is also definitely worthwhile.

The exquisite Como Cathedral is the centerpiece of the city, so a visit here is a must to see frescoes and stained glass windows that’ll blow you away.

Other things to do in Como include visiting Villa Olmo, a palatial property that looks more like a royal residence, plus the Basilica of San Fedele.

Como also has a direct train connection to Milan, so it’s an easy day trip from the fashion capital of Italy if you’re based there.

15. Attend an Italian cooking class

Without a shadow of a doubt, one of the best things to do in Lake Como is to take part in a cooking class.

As well as being a wonderful opportunity to learn the craft of Italian cooking, these classes are such a blast and usually include some local wines to enjoy alongside your home-cooked meal.

This tour equips you with all the skills you’ll need to craft your own pasta at home, and you’ll also learn how to whip up a mean tiramisu. The class is usually only made up of around 10 to 12 people and runs from your local chef’s own home.

An Italian dining experience wouldn’t be complete without an aperitif, and these classes generally offer some prosecco to sip on before your meal, plus some light bites and nibbles.

16. Visit Villa Melzi Gardens

As you’ve probably gathered by now, Lake Como has an abundance of high-end villas and immaculate gardens, and Villa Melzi is one that I instantly fell in love with.

Just a quick stroll from the center of Bellagio, Villa Melzi is actually one of the newer villas in the area, having been constructed in the early 1800s.

The interior of the villa is off-limits to visitors, but the museum, chapel, and gardens are open to the public from March to November each year. 

From the Romanesque and Egyptian statues to the serene Japanese pond and the meandering walkways, these gardens are just magical and really encapsulate the beauty of Lake Como.

Bellagio can be quite hectic during the summer months, and Villa Melzi will check all your boxes when you’re looking for somewhere that’s easy to reach but away from the hustle and bustle of the main streets.

17. Eat in a lakeside restaurant

You won’t have to go far to enjoy dinner with a view in the Lake Como area, as there are more waterfront eateries than I’d even attempt to count.

Classic Italian fare like wood-fired pizzas, arancini, burrata, and bruschetta are available in most restaurants, so you’ll be spoiled for choice no matter where you pick.

Having said that, it’s not uncommon for bistros and cafes with incredible locations to be lacking in quality when it comes to the food, so I have a few suggestions for you to ensure you won’t have to sacrifice on views or taste.

For an upscale experience, make sure to visit Bar Giardino at Hotel Royal Victoria in Varenna. The view from the outdoor terrace is simply incredible, and the food is equally as impressive.

Or for a more casual option, head to Bar Il Molo , just a few steps from Hotel Royal Victoria. I must admit, the food here can be a bit of a hit or miss, but the view from their terrace and the cocktails are top-notch.

Ristorante La Punta is another favorite of mine, and it’s located right on the tip of Bellagio’s peninsula, making it the perfect place for a sunset dinner. With its elegant decor and delicious seafood dishes, this restaurant is a must-visit while in Lake Como.

18. Take a dip in the lake

It goes without saying that one of the most enjoyable things to do in Lake Como is to dive into the refreshing cobalt-blue waters.

Lake Como is a lovely place for a dip, especially when you’ve spent the day under the sweltering sunshine. After all, Italy is no stranger to scorching summer temperatures!

There are many hotels perched right along the waterside with their own stretch of private land, but there are a number of designated swimming areas in most towns.

Unless somewhere is marked as safe for swimming or is a beach area, it’s best to avoid jumping in, as some patches of the lake have less favorable swimming conditions than others.

Some gorgeous spots for a quick splash include Lido di Bellagio Beach Club, Spiaggia Pubblica di Bellagio, or Lido di Varenna.

Where to Stay in Lake Como

The most popular areas for accommodation in Lake Como are Bellagio, Varenna, and Como. These towns have the most tourist attractions and offer great accommodation options ranging from luxurious villas to budget-friendly guesthouses.

Varenna and Como are especially great because they have direct train connections to Milan, so it’s very easy to get to. However, keep in mind that Como is very far from the middle part of the lake where most attractions are located so you’ll spend a lot of time commuting.

• Venice and Northern Italy are known for flavorful meats and pastries.
• On the Italian Riviera, a taste of the region’s famous basil pesto is a must. Delicious seafood dishes are popular along the shore, but true Ligurians favor simple, traditional recipes like minestrone soup and farinata , an unleavened chickpea pancake.
• For more authentic meals, try local trattorias , small restaurants set away from the main piazzas. A typical Italian meal includes wines and the occasional beer, followed by a few sips of after-dinner drinks like grappa or limoncello .
• Tuscany, on the tour extension, is world-famous for its wine, oil, sauces, and pasta. Menus favor subtle, lighter pastas and desserts made with nuts, fruit, and honey. Try a dish featuring the region’s Chianina beef, perhaps the most prized breed of cattle in all of Italy. For wine, popular Tuscan reds include Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which are primarily made from the Sangiovese grape. Well-known white wines are also made around the San Gimignano region.
• Italy operates on the European standard 220-240 volts and use Types C, F, or L plugs with two or three small, round pins.
• We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
• The strength of the air conditioning in European hotels is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it is usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
• Your hotel may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
• Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
• There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.

• Italy is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and six hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
• When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm on tour.
• You will use the euro on this tour.

• We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
• If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
• Tips can only be paid in cash.

• Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa, or MasterCard as payment for optional excursions.

FERRY & BOAT TOURS around Lake Como

Ferry and boat tours on Lake Como are something that I’d definitely recommend to anyone who wants to experience their holidays at its best.

Whether you are visiting Lake Como for a day or staying longer , jump aboard a boat, relax and reach your favourite destination: Bellagio ,  Varenna ,  Como , or maybe one of the  historical villas  on the shores of the lake.

The local public navigation service (Navigazione Laghi) provides several routes that connect all of the most popular towns along Lake Como’s shores, at a convenient price .

PUBLIC BOAT TOURS around Lake Como

The public boat service is provided by  Navigazione Laghi . The service operates all year round (with the exception of the southeastern branch, where it only operates in the summer), although in the low season it has a reduced frequency of service .

Below I collected the most useful information that will help you organize your transfers, but if you don’t find what you are looking for, or if you have specific questions, please contact Navigazione Laghi directly .

About the routes

There are three main routes:

Como - Colico (and back)

This passenger-only route connects the city of Como , on the southwestern tip of the lake, to Colico , on the northern tip, with intermediate stops that vary depending on the route .

The Como-Colico ferry line offers two different types of service:

• Regular service ( Corse battello in the map). This is the slowest service, stopping at most towns along the route (which vary by ride) and is perfect for those who want to enjoy the ride and take lots of pictures . In winter, this service is more limited than in summer, in favor of the express service.
• Express service ( Corse rapide ). This service has fewer stops, which vary depending on the ride. It costs a little more than the regular service, but is perfect for those with limited time .

Ferries operating only in the central area of Lake Como

There are two different types of services in this area as well:

• Ferries that allow the transport of vehicles ( Corse traghetto in the map) only operate between the towns of Bellagio , Varenna , Menaggio , and Cadenabbia . In the Navigazione Laghi search form , these piers are characterized by the word "Traghetto".
• Due to the high influx of tourists, this area also has several passenger-only shuttle services connecting towns in the central area. Since stops may vary by shuttle type, always use the search form on the Navigazione Laghi website to get the most up-to-date schedules.

Lecco - Bellagio (and back)

This passenger-only route connects Lecco , on the southeastern tip of the lake, to Bellagio, on the promontory between the three branches of the lake. It only operates in the summer .

You can buy different types of tickets, the rates of which vary depending on several factors: distance between the point of departure and the point of arrival, presence of intermediate stops, surcharges for fast service , etc.

The best thing you can do to know the exact price of your trip is to visit the website of the company and use their search form . However, below is an overview of what you can get.

Types of tickets

• One-way and round-trip tickets : buy this ticket if you want to travel (and travel back) to a specific destination, without intermediate stops (you can sail from Como to Bellagio but without getting off at Argegno for a coffee).
• Free-circulation tickets : holders of these tickets are entitled to make intermediate stops between the piers for which the ticket was issued (if you want to visit multiple destinations by lake in a single day, this is probably the best choice). If available, this type of pass can be valid for one day or six days , depending on your travel needs.

• One-way ticket Como-Bellagio : €10.40
• Free-circulation ticket Como-Bellagio (valid 1 day): €23.30
• One-way ticket Bellagio-Varenna : €4.60 (this price applies to all one-way passenger transfers between towns in the central area of the lake)

Where to buy tickets

You can currently purchase tickets online   (on Navigazione Laghi's website ) for regular service trips only (which means: no vehicle transportation, no express service) for the following trip types:

• one-way/return trips
• free-circulation tickets (trips with intermediate stops)

Otherwise, tickets can be purchased at the ticket office near the dock  of almost any town ( onboard purchase – with cash/credit card and without any additional cost – is allowed in case of towns with no ticket office). People with disabilities can always buy the ticket on board without extra charge.

Keep in mind that during the peak season the turnout at ticket offices can be very high. If you can, buy your ticket online to avoid standing in line under the sun.

Navigazione Laghi offers a one-hour tour of the Como basin area , between the towns of Cernobbio, Moltrasio, and Torno. You can choose to purchase a non-stop ticket or a free circulation ticket.

Tickets for the Lake Como ferry service can be purchased at ferry terminals or on the Navigazione Laghi website :

• Ferry terminals : major towns around Lake Como (including Como, Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, and Tremezzina) have ticket offices near the pier. All mid-lake towns have their own charm, maybe I would suggest you to choose one of the less crowded (such as Cadenabbia or Lenno), then consider that you can reach all others by ferry in a matter of minutes. So, as you said, if you want to take your own car, the best option is to get to Cadenabbia by ferry and then drive to Via degli Artigiani (8 minute drive), where you will leave your car and then decide whether to walk or take a taxi boat to Villa Balbianello . We want to make a round trip starting from Como (around 10 am), with 2 stops. First one in Varenna than in Bellagio from where we have to return to Como (no later than 21 hrs). Timetables and routes are a little bit complicated to organise easily our trip. Could you give us a hint which would be the best option considering our limited time to visit (about 8 hrs) both towns and a resonable fares for this (either regular or rapid boats)?

Hi Claudio, in my opinion the opposite is preferable, that is: first, take the ferry from Como to Bellagio (about an hour via fast service ferry). From there, take the ferry from Bellagio to Varenna (15 minutes, max 30). Once you’ve visited Varenna, you can take the fast service from Varenna to Como (not too late-I think the last one of the day is around 7 p.m.). I know it is difficult to read their timetables, which is why I suggest you use the search form directly.

On the navigazionelaghi.it website, there are two options to select – eg. Varenna or Varenna (Traghetto). The first one I believe is the mid lake shuttle and the first service from Varenna is 9:23, while the second one is the car ferry and has earlier services. If I buy a one way ticket or a free circulation ticket, can I take any of these services or do I have to stick to only the one I buy a ticket for? Is the free circulation ticket only for the mid lake shuttle? Is there a different dock for the shuttle and the ferry at Varenna and Bellagio? Thank you!

Hi Claudine, useful questions for other readers as well. You don’t have to worry: if you buy the free circulation ticket you can take any kind of ferry you want, as long as you move within the validity area of the ticket you chose to buy. The piers may be different (for example, in Bellagio there is one where you take the regular ferry and another where you have to board if you have a car – or even if you don’t have it), but in any case it is best to ask the shore staff to make sure you take the right boat 😀 Best!

Good morning Salma, thank you so much for your feedback! You can buy the Como-Menaggio free-circulation ticket which covers all trips included within that area. At this time, the boats are certainly quieter than in the high season. But the thing that worries me is that with the current winter schedule you will hardly be able to visit all these towns in one day, taking even two-hour breaks. I think it’s better to split the visits into two days!

Hi John, Griante is a hamlet of Cadenabbia, where the pier from which car ferries also depart is located. But yes, there is also the pier in Tremezzo a short distance away. What they told you is correct, there are not very many boats, even in the high season. Basically, while waiting for the new schedules to come out, consider one or maximum two rides per hour.

Hello Marco, yes, what you say is theoretically correct. But I honestly wouldn’t advise you to visit all these destinations in one day: the distances are greater than you might think, the boat rides are not that frequent, and then I would recommend devoting at least a couple of hours to each town. I’m afraid you’ll have to extend your trip or remove a town from the itinerary!

We noticed that ferries are frequent from Bellagio to Varenna and Menaggio, but there are only 3 per day to other places such as Nesso and Lenno? We want to visit Nesso and Lenno, which is the best way to visit these places?

Hello Evangelia, you can always take the bus. For example, from Bellagio you can take the c30 that takes you to Nesso in about 25-30 minutes, whereas to reach Lenno you can take the ferry to one of the more connected villages on the other side (e.g., Cadenabbia), and from there take the C10 that takes you to Lenno.

Hi Alessandro, your responses have been very helpful. I have some specific queries below. 1. Are fast ferry tickets available only at the actual office, not online ? If yes , then not sure why “INCLUDE FAST SERVICE” option is present on the Navigazione Laghi website. When I try to search fast service tickets online, I see following error: “You have included the express service or selected accompanying vehicle: you can purchase these services EXCLUSIVELY at the ground ticket offices.” 2. How many hours minimum should we budget for if we want to travel from “Como” via ferry and we want to cover Bellagio and Varena (couple of hours at each of those locations , and come back. 3. We will be travelling from Milan with 3 suitcases to Giovanni S Como station. Is there luggage storage available at the station ? We want to take a train to Lugano from that station in evening.

Hi Umesh, so sorry for the delay but I had missed your comment! Anyway I confirm that currently fast service tickets can only be done at ground ticket offices. Online you can only check for the actual ride. I know, it’s all a bit strange…. Anyway, if you want to easily visit both Bellagio and Varenna from Como, I recommend budgeting for a full day (say from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Here you can find some luggage storage facilities available in the city of Como. Hope this helps!

Hi Alessandro, is it possible to start from Varenna, stop in Nesso and then continue on to Bellagio with a one day free circulation ticket? Would the purchase be from Varenna to Careno? I didn’t see an option for Nesso when purchasing tickets and was assuming a stop would be in Nesso.

Hi Michele, yes, it is possible to do what you said, but you have to plan your trip carefully, because the rides are generally not that frequent. I’ve just checked on Navigazione Laghi website and it looks like you can’t buy the free circulation ticket that covers the Varenna – Nesso area… one of Lake Como’s mysteries! So in this case I recommend you buy separate individual tickets, you can easily do this online so you will avoid standing in line. Hope this helps!

My family and I are looking to travel from Como to Bellagio but we would also like to make stops in Varenna and Menaggio, before returning to Como. Hi Taylor, I’m afraid visiting 3 towns in one day is a bit much. I would advise you to choose only 2 towns from Bellagio, Menaggio and Varenna or, if you don’t want to give up, make sure you plan your travels well, leave early in the morning and travel at a good pace. That said, you can certainly buy the Como-Menaggio free circulation day pass and move freely in this area (as the name of the pass suggests :D). Keep in mind, however, that if you want to return to Como using the fast boat service, you will have to go to the Menaggio ticket office to purchase the appropriate supplement (as it is not purchasable online). Hi there! Trying to purchase tickets online but am unsure which option to choose. I’m staying in Varenna in late August and am trying to get to Lenno (to visit Villa del Balbianello) and visit Bellagio and maybe Mennagio all in a day. I know the start point would obviously be Varenna, but what would the end point be for the ticket. Hi Araceli, since all of the destinations you mentioned are in the central area of the lake, you can purchase a “Free circulation ticket” that has Varenna as its starting point and any of the above towns as its destination. As you can see from – sorry – this very complicated table , the type of route connecting Varenna to Lenno / Bellagio / Menaggio is always marked with the number 3. So, a Free circulation ticket will cost you €15 for the whole day (valid only for regular service, not rapid service). Hope this helps!

Hi Wendy, the best thing to do in my opinion is to buy online a “Free circulation ticket” which covers the Como-Varenna area and costs €25.80 for the whole day. Remember though that with this ticket you cannot take the express service. If you want to use an express service for one of the rides you want to take, you will have to buy the corresponding supplement at the ground ticket offices.

Hi, yes, you can purchase the day pass that covers the entire area. The drawback is that, online, you can only purchase this type of pass if, for the travel times you are interested in, there is actually a regular run that connects both destinations (either directly or with a stopover). If this type of ride does not exist, but the return from Varenna is only available through the express service, you do not have the option of purchasing the day-pass online – you can do this at the ticket office, but if the only service that will take you back to Como is the express ride, then when you are in Varenna you will still have to stand in line to buy the supplement. I’m sorry, I know it’s a mess, but that’s how Lake Como ferry service is currently run 🥲 For any other information, please contact the company’s website directly.

Hi, you can do it the other way around. Take the ferry from Varenna to Cadenabbia, and from there proceed south. At the end of your walk, once you get to Colonno, you can go back north on the C10 bus and, again, take the ferry from Cadenabbia to Varenna.

Hi – Can you take the Traghetto ferry even if you do not have a car? If yes, how easy is the walk between the Bellagio passenger ferry terminal and the Bellagio Treghetto terminal? Will be arriving on a passenger ferry at 17:57 at the Bellagio passenger ferry and hoping to catch the 18:15 Bellagio Traghetto ferry to Varenna. Hi Diane, yes, you can take the vehicle ferry even without a vehicle. The distance between the two different terminals in Bellagio is a 5-minute walk, so I’d say you’re just in time 🙂

Hi Natasha, currently it seems impossible to purchase the day-pass on the Navigazione Laghi website. I recommend that you purchase tickets for each route separately (the service charge for connecting between destinations in the central lake area is always 4.60€ each way). I suggest you buy the tickets a few days in advance as online they sell out very soon (if it happens you can still head to the land-based ticket offices). For any other information, please write directly to the company so that sooner or later they will be able to offer a service that meets expectations 🙂

Hi Alessandro, We will be traveling from Saronno, is the Como Nord Lago the right station that is a 5 min walk from the ferry pier at Piazza Cavour? We are hoping to get to Bellagio and take in some views, are the hydrofoil boats’ seat inside and what kind of views do they provide? Hi Hannah, I confirm that Como Lago station is a few minutes’ walk from Piazza Cavour, in front of which is the boat ticket office. If you are interested in enjoying the beautiful views on the ferry from Como to Bellagio (in this regard, I invite you to see my Reel !) you may be better off using the regular service, as the hydrofoils have mostly indoor seats. The advantage is also that you can buy this kind of ticket online. As for the ferry from Bellagio to Varenna, again you can safely buy your ticket online (but I advise you not to do it at the last minute because tickets can be sold-out). Hope this helps!

Hi Will, as far as I know it is: the ticket you buy online must be used on the day itself but not necessarily for a ride at a specific time. On this, I suggest you write to the company’s website so they can give you more accurate information. October is one of the best times to visit Lake Como: the area is not congested with tourists, the weather is still good, and transportation services are operating pretty much like in summer, so go easy!

Hi Hannah, take a look at these luggage storage facilities around Lake Como (there is also one in Bellano). Consider that there are not very many boats connecting Bellano to Bellagio. Every day there are about 2 or 3 that go from Bellagio to Bellano and as many that go the other way around. I recommend that you get an idea of how the Lake Como ferry tours work in this current page and for any other information on this you can contact the official company. What I can recommend, as an alternative, is to embark in Varenna (from which departures are more frequent) and which can be reached by train or D21 bus .

We will have a one day Free Circulation Pass and hoping to go to Lenno to catch a boat shuttle to see Villa del Balbianello and visit Bellagio and Varenna back to Como to catch train to Milan. Hi Kym, I think your plan requires more time than just one day. Instead, my advice is to take the train to Varenna, from where you can take the ferry to Bellagio. This would greatly reduce the time and you could also include in your day a visit to Villa Monastero or Villa Melzi ! How about it?

Hi, Argegno is definitely an important junction and therefore can count on several daily runs, for example going north now I counted about 10. To start the Lake Como Greenway you can take the C10 bus from Argegno and get off immediately afterwards, at Colonno, where the starting point is located.

Hi Olivia, Bellagio has two piers. This one allows you to board ferries that also admit vehicles (those that only take you to Menaggio, Cadenabbia and Varenna). This one , on the other hand, is for ferries designed to transport people only. Bellano’s pier can be found here . I hope I have helped you!

1. Como Old Town

One of the best things to do in Como is to simply explore its old town on foot.

With cobbled streets and cozy squares lined with historic buildings, shops, and restaurants, the historic city center of Como is really cozy.

The nicest part of the old town is located between the lake and the remains of the old city wall, Porta Torre. It’s in this area that you will find most shops, restaurants, quite a few churches, and several museums.

Good to know: Further below, we list some of the most prominent landmarks to see in Como’s historic city center. Some of them – such as the Cathedral or Porta Torre – deserve a special mention and are not to be missed. Many others are nice to see if you have a bit more time, but are not a must if you only have a few hours in Como. You will find those additional ‘nice to see’ places mentioned at the very end of this article.

2. Como Cathedral

Como’s cathedral ( Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta – Duomo di Como ) is its most important religious building and the third largest in the whole of Lombardy region. Construction began in 1396 but wasn’t completed until late in the 18th century.

The result is a wonderful blend of architectural styles, including a Gothic facade, a Romanesque bell tower, and a Baroque dome. Indeed, Duomo di Como is considered to be one of northern Italy’s most beautiful monuments.

The western facade is especially impressive, with high columns of statues on either side of the entrance and a rose window. You can also see two statues beside the door depicting Pliny the Elder and his nephew Pliny the Younger. These were influential Roman dignitaries who lived in Como town.

Dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the cathedral is laid out in a typical ‘cross’ style, with a nave and side aisles leading to a transept beneath the dome. The dome is quite beautiful and has a top lantern with many windows to flood the cathedral with light.

On either side of the nave, you can see nine 16th-century tapestries and paintings by Gaudenzio Ferrari and Bernardino Luini (who worked with Leonardo da Vinci).

Good to know: You can visit the cathedral on weekdays between 10.30 am and 5.00 pm. In any case, if you are in Como, you’ll want to come here anyway, so just see if it’s open when you’re there.

TIP: If you get the chance, go back to see the cathedral at night when it is illuminated and looks absolutely stunning! If you’re lucky enough to be visiting in late November – December, you’ll be able to see the beautiful extra lighting that is added for Christmas.

3. Lakeside Promenade

Como’s spectacular lakeside promenade is the best in the entire Lake Como region. Extending to almost 6 kilometers in length, its crescent-shaped path is almost completely paved and perfect for a leisurely stroll. You couldn’t ask for better views, with homes built into the hillside on one side of you and boats going back and forth on the other.

Start at Piazza Cavour , a beautiful little square located where the old town meets the lake. This is a popular meeting point with locals, packed with terraced cafes and bars. It’s hard to believe that the area was just marshland in medieval times and wasn’t transformed into an urban square until late in the 19th century.

The atmosphere here is vibrant and there always seems to be something cool to see, from street performers and concerts to craft markets and artisan fairs.

On the east side of the bay, you can visit Villa Geno, a small lido with lovely views of the villas on the west. There is a large grassy area here for sunbathing and a pool for children. You can also hire bikes should you want to cycle along the promenade instead.

Next to Villa Geno is the famous Como fountain ( Fontana di Villa Geno ) which features an impressive 30-meter-high jet of water.

To the west , your promenade walk will take you past Como’s Monument to the Fallen – a memorial honoring soldiers who lost their lives in World War One. If you continue along the promenade, you can walk all the way to the popular Villa Olmo . The Tempio Voltiano museum sits on the waterfront, too, along with many scenic gardens where you can simply sit and soak up the views.

4. Porta Torre

Porta Torre is one of the oldest landmarks in Como, and well worth a short walk to see it. This ancient gateway on Piazza Vittoria dates back to the 12th century when the city’s medieval walls were constructed.

It is an excellent example of Romanesque military architecture – huge in scale, impossible to breach, and with four rows of arches on the inner wall. 40 meters high, Porta Torre was originally part of the city wall itself but is now free-standing.

Be sure to include it as part of your stroll through the city and you can also see the statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi that stands nearby.

5. Volta Temple and Gardens

Alessandro Volta – the Italian physicist who invented the electric battery – may be Como’s most famous son. The Volta Temple ( Tempio Voltiano ) was built in his honor in 1927; 100 years after his death.

This imposing building was donated to the city by Francesco Somaini, the owner of a cotton mill in Como. It now houses a museum dedicated to Volta’s life and work, containing personal memorabilia, an excellent collection of scientific instruments, and an early version of the electric battery.

Sitting right on the shore of Lake Como, the building truly looks like an old Roman temple. The interior of the building is architecturally beautiful, with stunning tiling and elaborate carvings.

You can’t really miss the adjacent gardens, Giardini del Tempio Voltiano . This is a lovely place to sit for a while and admire the museum’s neoclassical architecture.

6. Villa Olmo

Villa Olmo is one of Como’s most popular attractions and one of the most beautiful villas of Lake Como. This splendid villa is located on the lakeshore in the northwestern part of the city. It was originally built for the Marquis Innocenzo Odescalchi towards the end of the 18th century and named after an elm that stood in the center of the garden at that time.

Host to many illustrious visitors over the years – including Napoleon, Austrian Emperor Ferdinand I, and the last Holy Roman Emperor Francis II – the villa later fell into a state of neglect. It has since been restored to its former splendor and has been maintained by the municipality of Como since 1925.

There is no charge to walk through the main house and admire its contents, which include a variety of incredible frescoes, paintings, and statues. You can also see the theater, a later addition to the property.

After pausing to admire the neoclassical features of the building’s exterior – particularly the magnificent colonnade decorated with tondos – you can stroll through the tranquil English-style gardens. Now a community park, the gardens are also free to enter.

Good to know: The park is open every day but you can only see the interior of the villa from Tuesday to Sunday. The building is sometimes closed for events and exhibitions. You can find more practical information on their website (at the moment, only in Italian), but we recommend coming here anyway – even if just to see the gardens and the exterior of the villa.

7. Brunate Funicular & Viewpoints

While Brunate is a separate village and not part of the city of Como, going there by funicular is one of the most popular attractions in the area. So no list of the best things to do in Como (and no visit to the city!) would be complete without including Brunate!

This hilltop village sitting just above the city of Como is described by locals as a ‘balcony in the Alps’ – and what a fitting description that is! At an altitude of around 800 meters, Brunate offers glorious panoramic views over Como and the lake.

One of the most exciting parts of visiting Brunate is the journey to reach it!

For this, you will use the funicular railway from Como . It dates back to the late 19th century and is one of the most popular attractions in the region. The journey only takes 7 minutes but it is hard to put into words quite how beautiful the scenery is as you ascend.

Good to know: The Como-Brunate funicular runs between 6 am and 10.30 pm, every 15-30 minutes. During Saturdays and in the summer season it runs until midnight. You can find more info on their website (in Italian), but it’s not really something you have to plan in advance. Just go there, get the tickets, and that’s it.

When boarding the funicular, try to get into the carriage that’s facing downhill. That way, you can enjoy some nice views during your journey too.

Brunate village itself is quite small, with several Art Nouveau-style villas to admire. The main reason to come here is the reward: amazing views of Lake Como (check out several viewpoints). In addition, Brunate has several attractive churches, in particular, the pretty and peaceful Chiesa di Sant’Andrea Apostolo. But there is one more reason to come here, and that’s the Volta Lighthouse – see below.

8. Volta Lighthouse

Located about 1.5 km from the top station of the Brunate funicular, the Volta Lighthouse ( Faro Voltiano ) is another popular place to see in Como. This hilltop lighthouse and memorial to Alessandro Volta sits yet much higher than the village, offering stunning views of Lake Como and the surroundings.

In addition to the views from the hill, you can also climb the spiral staircase (143 steps) to the top of the lighthouse itself.

If you’re feeling energetic, you should definitely visit the Volta Lighthouse when in Brunate. However, keep in mind that the walk to get there involves a steep 30-minute climb up a cobblestone road. But you are well rewarded for your hard work – the views across the Alps and the lowlands surrounding them are simply spectacular.

Good to know: In high season and on certain weekends, there is often a shuttle bus between Brunate funicular station and the lighthouse. Sometimes, you will also have locals offering rides to the top.

There is a small fee to enter the lighthouse. In the high season (mid-April to end-October), it’s normally open daily except Wednesdays, from 10.30 am to 6.30 pm.

9. Boat trips on Lake Como

Taking a scenic boat trip on Lake Como is a great way to see the city and the surrounding areas from an entirely different perspective. It’s also the best way to admire the stunning scenery along the shores of Lake Como.

A variety of ferries and high-speed hydrofoils leave from Como’s pier on a regular basis, taking you to other towns around the lake and moving at a pace that allows you to soak up the scenery. However, those trips are meant to get you from point A to point B, and not so much to show you the nicest places.

For that, you can opt for a private tour on a speedboat. Obviously, longer trips will cover more ground, but it’s worth it either way.

Here are a few of the most popular options for Lake Como scenic boat trips departing from Como city :

• 1 hr: Classic speedboat tour .
• 2 hrs: Scenic speedboat tour .
• 3 hrs: Scenic boat tour with an aperitif.

10. Como Silk

The production of silk may have originated in China but you may be surprised to know that Como is one of the most important players in the worldwide silk industry . Indeed, more than 23,000 Comaschi (people from Como) now work in the silk business.

Silkworms were originally imported into Italy in the 6th century A.D. In 1400 the Duke of Milan – Ludovico Sforza – decided to plant mulberry trees around Lake Como to feed them. At that point, the Como silk industry was born, although production methods at the time were laboriously slow.

Gradually, the process was refined and factories were established, leading to huge economic growth in the region. High-quality silk from Lake Como became more and more popular until – by 1972 – the area was producing more silk than China or Japan!

Interesting to know: These days, Como produces about 70% of Europe’s silk. Many of the world’s most famous fashion designers get their silk from Como. These include the top fashion houses like Armani, Valentino, Versace, Hermes, Chanel, Yves St Laurent, and many others.

TIP: You can learn all about this interesting facet of the city by visiting The Lake Como Silk Museum ( Museo della Seta di Como ), with demonstrations showing how it was originally produced.

Plus, of course, there are many places throughout Como and the entire Lake Como district where you can buy gorgeous silk clothing and scarves to take home. So even if you have no time for the museum, you can always see the famous Como silk in the local boutiques. That’s a good excuse to convince your travel companions to do some (window) shopping in Como!

11. Como Churches

In a country famous for its churches , you can probably imagine that there are many more churches to see in Como than just the main cathedral. Indeed, there are numerous churches in Como city where you can admire the beautiful architecture and religious artwork.

Here are a few other notable churches you may want to check out when visiting Como (we also indicated them on our map, so that you can decide which ones are worth passing by):

Basilica di San Fedele located in the middle of the old town dates back to the 11th century and may have been Como’s first cathedral.

Chiesa di San Giacomo is a little church located just next to the cathedral. This 12th-century church has a very unique exterior and looks more like a manor or a palace rather than a church. It’s also worth a quick look inside if it’s open.

Just outside the city walls under Mount Croce, you’ll find the Basilica di Sant’Abbondio . This is an excellent example of Romanesque architecture dedicated to the former bishop of Como. Some people would even argue that this is the most beautiful church in Como…

Also worth seeing is the splendid Chiesa di Santa Cecilia which was built in the mid-1300s. It’s located in the old town, just next to Porta Torre, so you’ll likely pass here anyway.

One of the most unusual churches in Como is the Tempio Sacrario Sport Nautici (Nautic Sports Shrine Temple). Completed in the 1960s, this reinforced concrete structure is shaped like a ship and dedicated to Our Lady of the Miracle, the protector of mariners in distress.

Good to know: Many smaller churches might have limited opening times. So be sure to double-check before you decide to visit, especially if it’s located a bit further away from other Como attractions and requires a detour.

12. Como Museums

Como has quite a few museums. In addition to the earlier-mentioned Tempio Voltiano and the Silk Museum, you might want to check out the Archaeological museum at Palazzo Giovio (Museo Archeologico Paolo Giovio, aka Museo Civico), the Pinacoteca Civica (art gallery), or the Museo Garibaldi (aka Civic Museum of the Risorgimento) – a historical museum celebrating Como’s past.

Plus, there are a couple of private museums in Como too. These include the educational science museum Museo delle scienze Casartelli and the MuRAC Museo Rifugi Antiarei . This is a former air raid shelter that now contains an interesting exhibition about aviation and air defense systems. It also has a room dedicated to the Italian Red Cross.

Please note that most Como museums are really small, so don’t expect world-class galleries like in Florence, Venice, Rome, or Naples. Still, it can be nice to see one or two of them if you have a few hours to spare or are visiting Como in the coldest months of the year or…

However, if the weather is nice and your time is limited, there are so many other amazing places to see on Lake Como ! So you should really consider your overall itinerary when choosing what to prioritize. See our recommendations further below as well.

13. Local Food & Cooking Classes

And finally, no list of the best things to do in Como would be complete without mentioning the food. You’re in Italy after all…

There are lots of really good restaurants in the city where you can try all kinds of regional and local specialties. In addition, you can find some nice food tours and cooking classes , which can be nice to do if you have a few hours to spare in Como.

Meeting locals and trying traditional dishes is always a great way to get to know a place better! Slow travel at its best.

TIP: If there’s one dish you have to try when visiting Lake Como, it’s Risotto with Perch ( Risotto con filetti di pesce persico ).

14. Explore Lake Como

I guess it goes without saying, but here it is – there is so much more to see in Lake Como than its main city! So don’t just limit your visit to the city of Como and be sure to explore the other areas!

There are so many charming little towns dotting the shores of Lake Como, so many historic villas and enchanting gardens, and countless hiking trails for those looking for a more active holiday…

As an absolute minimum, don’t miss the towns of Bellagio and Varenna – both easily reachable from Como by fast ferry.

As you can see, the town center is quite compact and you can easily walk everywhere. However, keep in mind that some places – like e.g. Villa Olmo or Volta Lighthouse – will require a longer walk and more time to visit.

How much time do you need in Como?

As you can see, there is plenty to see and do in Como city so you can easily fill a day in town and its immediate surroundings. But you can also just visit for a few hours or stay for a few days – it really depends on your overall travel itinerary.

As a minimum, we recommend half a day in Como . This will give you enough time to explore the old town, visit the Cathedral, and walk along the lakeside promenade. In addition, you could either take a funicular to Brunate or visit Villa Olmo.

If you have one full day in Como city, you can see all the main landmarks mentioned in our guide, including Brunate village and Volta Lighthouse. If you want to actually visit a few places inside, take a boat tour, and enjoy some quiet time, we recommend 2-3 days for Como.

Plus, you could easily spend an additional 3-4 days exploring the wider surroundings along the shores of Lake Como.

How to visit Como from Milan

Many people visit Como on a day trip from Milan . With a direct train between the two cities, it’s indeed very easy to do. But if you only have a day, you’ll probably want to see more of Lake Como than just Como Town!

In that case, start with a few hours in Como, followed by a fast ferry to Bellagio. After visiting Bellagio, take a boat to Varenna. From there, you can take a train back to Milan.

TIP: Alternatively, consider joining this highly-rated day tour that visits all these places in the most efficient way. Tours use their own transportation (also boats) saving lots of time and allowing you to make the most out of your day.

Where to stay in Como

With its proximity to Milan and Lugano and good transport connections (railway, highway, and ferries), Como can be a good place to stay when exploring the area for a few days.

Also, because it’s a bigger city with more options, accommodation here tends to be a bit cheaper compared to the smaller prime towns on Lake Como such as Bellagio or Varenna. Still don’t expect ‘budget’ prices in the high season – Lake Como is not a cheap destination.

Hi Lisa, there are quite a few public parkings in Como center so see what best suits your itinerary. For example, this underground parking garage is very centrally located and since you pay when you leave, you don't have to worry in advance about how many hours to pay for. You could also park your car near Villa Olmo and start from there (see map). This parking is much cheaper since you pay just a few euros for the whole day, but it's further away from the center and ideally you arrive early if you want to find a spot here. Hope this helps. A guide to Lake Como's highlights — villas, promenades and aperitivo spots not to miss

The western branch of this northern Italian lake is its highlight, home to romantic villas and revamped waterfront promenades in pretty Como city.

Lake Como conveys notions of easy elegance and the Italian art of slow living, and has come to stand for something bigger than it is. Officially called Lario, Italy ’s third-biggest lake has been drawing visitors since the 18th century, when it was a popular stop for European nobles on their grand tours. More recently, it stepped into the spotlight as the backdrop for films including Ocean’s Twelve and Casino Royale . But the lake’s prestige dates to Roman times, when Julius Ceasar drained a swamp at its southwestern end, strategically located near Alpine passes, and funded the creation of a city known as Novum Comum.

It laid the foundation for Como, the main hub to this day and the reason why the lake is commonly known as Como. This spring is the best time to visit the city in over a decade, as sections of its waterfront sidewalks, which had been cordoned off for expansion since 2008, are once again open to walkers. The centre is dominated by the azure dome of the Duomo di Como , one of the last gothic cathedrals built in the country. Behind it is Teatro Sociale , and to one side is the shopping street of Via Vittorio Emanuele II. It’s a good place to pick up a souvenir: mulberry trees were planted on Lake Como’s hills in the 15th century, and boutiques like A Picci sell handkerchiefs and scarves using their silk.

Next to the shop, Via Lambertenghi leads to Via Alessandro Volta , named after the physicist credited as the inventor of the electric battery. The townhouse where he was born in 1745 is marked with a plaque, and around it are some of the most coveted addresses of the time. This is not least thanks to their giardini pensili — gardens built on the Roman walls that once guarded the city centre.

Equally evocative is Passeggiata Lino Gelpi , between the lake and shorefront private gardens. The path’s name pays tribute to the 19th-century mayor who reclaimed a strip of land from villa owners to pave Como’s most scenic public footpaths. It’s a front-row spot from which to watch the lake’s seaplanes land, and it’s especially lovely in spring, when wisteria blooms along the banks.

Continue walking along the waterside road for half an hour to Cernobbio , one of the lake’s most popular resorts. Local Comaschi come to eat at Harry’s Bar , in a piazza by the shore; it serves whitefish from the lake, but the pick is the sole meuniere, floured and pan fried to crispy perfection. Alternatively, taxis wind up the hillside to Il Gatto Nero . It serves specialities from the surrounding region, such as ravioli with ossobuco and saffron, and has become popular among visiting celebrities thanks to its view of the lake.

For a different perspective, take to the water. Ferries link Como to the Alto Lago (‘High Lake’), its northernmost shore. But, if budget allows, the transport mode of choice are Riva runabouts . High-end hotels offer private rides on these mahogany speedboats as part of their activity programmes. Otherwise, companies like Como Classic Boats pick visitors up from almost any hamlet with a dock.

Among the most prettiest is Torno , on the western shore, with red-tiled roofs and a waterfront bell tower. It’s opposite Passalaqua ; built in the 18th century for a scion of local nobility, this villa was crowned the world’s top hotel by The World’s 50 Best in 2023, a year after opening. A glimpse is all you’ll get, as only guests are allowed in, but as an alternative visit Villa d’Este , the lake’s historic grand dame hotel. Further down the shores, highlights include Villa Carlotta and neoclassical Villa del Balbianello , which juts out on a promontory in Ossuccio.

A former fishing community, Ossuccio is also a gateway to Isola Comacina and UNESCO-listed Sacro Monte di Ossuccio , 14 chapels leading to a hillside sanctuary. From its waterfront, the view is a snapshot of what makes Lake Como so alluring: the unassuming hamlets next to larger-than-life villas, and the green, wooded hills sloping down to the deep-blue water. In the distance, always in view, are the Alps. From the Roman Empire to modern-day Hollywood, it’s a scene that’s charmed through the ages.

3 highlights not to miss in Lake Como

1. Teatro Sociale Como’s 19th-century theatre has always had a special affinity with the opera. This summer, it’ll join other venues across the country in marking 100 years since the death of Giacomo Puccini with an open-air production of Turandot, the composer’s final masterpiece.

2. Villa Carlotta The 20-acre botanical garden of Villa Carlotta is a much-loved retreat on the lake. There are monumental trees, a citrus tunnel and a path among the ferns, but it’s most famous for its azaleas, which bloom into full cushions of red, white and pink for a few weeks each May.

3. Isola Comacina The lake’s only island is mostly uninhabited, but its trails lead past olives, lindens and laurels, as well as houses for short-term artists in residence. Every June, the popular San Giovanni Festival reenacts a fire that devastated the island in the 12th century with a red-tinted firework display.

ISOLA MADRE & ISOLA BELLA

Don’t miss a chance to see the Borromean Islands – Isola Bella and Isola Madre, which lie in a wide gulf surrounded by mountains on the western side of Lake Maggiore.

The islands take their name from the aristocratic Borromean family who owned the land in the 16th and 17th centuries and each island offers a very different experience.

After boarding the boat in Baveno you will first cruise around Isola Madre, with its exotic and lush gardens which almost totally cover the island. Then proceed to Isola Bella, which is perhaps the most well-known of the islands. Here is located the Palazzo, which offers visitors an elegant setting and contains priceless works of art. Wander around the stunning gardens, which form an extraordinary flowering monument laid out over a series of ornate and overlapping terraces.

Cruise back to the mainland. Transportation is provided with this excursion.

Italian lakes tour itinerary.

This vacation to Northern Italy’s Italian Lakes begins in Milan. Here you’ll see the Duomo. From Milan you’ll travel to Verona, with a stop in the spa town of Sirmione on Lake Garda. Located at the foot of the southern Alps from here you’ll enjoy exquisite lake views. In Verona enjoy strolling among its ancient Roman architecture, great shopping, and is where Romeo and Juliet’s balcony is located. After two overnights in Verona the tour continues on to Lake Como. And finally reach Lake Maggiore where you’ll spend the final two nights in Stresa.

Day 1 Depart the United States for your Italian Lakes tour.

Day 2 arrive in milan, italy.

Check into your hotel. The rest of the day is free for you to see some of Milan. Tonight, meet your Tour Director and fellow travelers.

Day 3 Milan – Sirmione (Lake Garda) – Verona

Start the day with an orientation tour of Milan, stopping to admire the famous gothic-style Duomo. Catch the first glimpses of Lake Garda as you stop in Sirmione, the picturesque spa town on the south shore of Lake Garda. Stroll among the many shops and ice cream parlors that line the narrow cobblestone streets. Among its highlights, a medieval castle, the famous Roman villa and grottoes of Catullo. Afterward continue on to Verona where you will spend the evening in Verona, the “city of love”.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 4 Verona

In the morning, a Local Guide take you through the old cobblestone streets of the old part of Verona telling you the stories behind the old buildings and how this beautiful city inspired Shakespeare. Spend the afternoon shopping, visiting, or taking a stroll along the Adige River banks, or take advantage of the optional excursion.

Day 5 Verona – Lake Como

This morning, say goodbye to the romantic city of Verona and continue to fascinating Lake Como, where you’ll spend two nights. Stroll around the narrow alleys of the city center and the lungolago and maybe taste some fabulous local gelato.

Day 6 Lake Como. Excursion to Bellagio

Inspiring everyone from Roman senators and great composers to Hollywood actors, Como is the romantic image of the lakes, its cobalt-blue waters lined with magnificent mountains, lush gardens, and grand villas.

Take the ferry boat around Lake Como to the lakeside towns. Here you’ll enjoy breathing the fresh mountain air while your eyes will feast on the natural beauty. Join the included boat trip to Bellagio, which occupies one of the most scenic positions in all of Italy.

Day 7 Lake Como–Lugano, Switzerland–Lake Maggiore, Italy

Today leave Lake Como and cross the border into Switzerland, on the way to enchanting Lake Maggiore. Along the way enjoy excursion to beautiful Lake Lugano, and visit the stylish city that bears its name, Lugano. There enjoy a stroll along the lakeside promenade, window shop on refined Via Nassa, or sip an espresso on the Piazza Riforma.

Afterward, leave Switzerland and cross back into Italy, driving to Lake Maggiore to reach your accommodation in the late afternoon. Once you reach Lake Maggiore, you may choose to join an optional tour.

Day 8 Lake Maggiore

Set between Piedmont, Lombardy, and Switzerland, Lake Maggiore is a paradise of crystal waters, backed by towering mountains and surrounded by lush countryside. The day is yours to relax or to enjoy some of the many activities available around the lake. Maybe join an optional boat trip to the Borromean Islands, with time to visit the extravagant Borromeo Palace, built like a ship anchored just off the shoreline.

What to do in Lake Como

Como lake, Lombardia’s gem. The meeting point will take place at Piazza Cavour, in Como’s historical center, from where your guide will take you to your boat tour. You will get to admire the beauty of the area and to gain an insight into why Lake Como has since Roman times attracted the most elegant and refined worldwide nobility.

Aboard the Navigazione Lago di Como boat, let your guide drive you through thrilling tales of Julius Caesar who founded Novum Comum (Como city), fortresses and castles, furious naval battles, and crowned monarchs who built spectacular villas with large Baroque or Romantic gardens. You will contemplate many villas such as Villa Olmo, Villa D’Este, Villa Versace, Villa del Balbianello and Villa Carlotta among others, with its enchanting botanical gardens; as well as the cutest little towns such as Cernobbio and Tremezzo.

What to do in Bellagio

Bellagio, Lake Como’s pearl. Get off in Bellagio, the famous town that attracts visitors from all around the world, while remaining authentic.  Your guide will provide a deep orientation of every important sight of Bellagio, which can easily be visited autonomously, such as Punta Spartivento, Basilica of San Giacomo of Romanesque architecture, and Via Roma. 

Take a moment and stop at a typical and secret 18th century cellar for fine wine, cheese and ham tasting. Take this moment to relax and enjoy quality time with your peers while savoring some of the best local products.  Fancy a souvenir? The old town is full of many boutiques, designer stores, perfumes and jewelry stores. Did you know that Lake Como is internationally known for its silk products? We suggest getting lost in this picturesque old town center with its pretty and colourful little streets. Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Share a Kiss on Romantic Boat Ride in Lake Como During Eras Tour Break — See Photos!

The pop superstar recently wrapped a string of Eras Tour shows in Paris, and the NFL player was in attendance for one of the performances

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce 's Italian love story continues.

After the couple was spotted walking the streets of Lake Como, Italy , with their arms around each other earlier this week, they were seen enjoying a romantic rainy boat ride on May 17 — and embracing one another as they shared a romantic kiss. An additional person onboard snapped cute couples photos for them on both the boat and the dock.

The pop superstar, 34, recently wrapped a string of Eras Tour shows in Paris, and the NFL player, 34, was in attendance for one of the performances. There, he was seen taking videos of the "Cruel Summer" singer with his camera flash on in a viral moment.

"Oh, you know, the settings on the camera, if it's dark, it's going to automatically put the flash on," explained Kelce on a recent episode of  New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce .

He added, "I was just trying to get some good, you know, some good video, some good memories. I don't give a damn."

Travis also spoke about Swift's recent changes to the Eras Tour following the release of her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department , as she added several songs to the setlist.

"I'm just I'm happy for everybody that's in the tour that's performing, from the dancers to the band and obviously Taylor," he said. "It just looks like they're having so much fun up there, and they're absolutely killing it. And they're putting on a show that you know, you won't get anywhere else."

Elsewhere during the podcast episode, Travis explained he "really didn’t get to explore Paris too much" during his time in the French city. "We’ll do that some other time," he added.

Throughout his ongoing offseason, Travis has already signed a new contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, landed a hosting gig on Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity? and earned a role in Ryan Murphy 's new FX series,  Grotesquerie .

Swift's Eras Tour resumes with three shows in Stockholm from May 17-19, and she'll continue performing in Europe through August, before launching the second North American leg.

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift enjoyed a secret romantic getaway to Italy’s Lake Como following the singer’s Eras Tour stop in Paris .

The lovebirds stayed at the Villa Sola Cabiati, which is located on the Grand Hotel Tremezzo’s gorgeous waterside property.

The stunning private villa — which has six separate suites and sleeps up to 12 — set the pair back nearly $21,000 per night during their three-night stay.

The full-service villa is a Neoclassical landmark, with “roots going back to the 16th century,” the hotel’s website states.

Amenities include a private pool, expansive arabesque gardens, a butler, housekeepers, a chambermaid, and a private chef — all available “at your disposal.”

While the villa features a few modern touches, guests immediately travel back in time when they step into the home’s massive foyer.

The ceilings are adorned with “immaculately-preserved frescoes” and “hand-crafted Murano chandeliers” while the walls are lined with “museum-quality paintings.”

The home — which still features “its original, exquisite terrazzo floors” — used to belong to the Dukes of Serbelloni and it “remains full of period heirlooms and artwork — including the bed in which Napoleon and Joséphine Bonaparte slept when they visited the Palazzo Serbelloni in Milan.”

The immaculately manicured gardens “ideal for candlelit dinners and morning strolls,” which the couple seemingly took advantage of during their stay.

The couple was photographed enjoying a romantic meal on the property earlier this week, sipping wine while taking in the unobstructed lake views.

Swift and Kelce, both 34, looked every bit in love while holding hands across the table, which was decorated with a white tablecloth and several silver statues.

Following the meal, the duo went on a stroll in the picturesque town with their arms wrapped around one another.

At one point, the Kansas City Chiefs star leaned down to give the “Cruel Summer” singer a kiss.

The athlete played coy about the pair’s location on the latest episode of his “New Heights” podcast after his brother, Jason Kelce, asked about his “country of origin.” 

“I can give you a continent. I’m in Europe,” the tight end said, before clarifying he would not play a “guessing game.”

While Travis seemingly tried to throw fans off by opening the call with a “Bonjour,” fans believe Jason gave the couple’s location away after bursting into a fake Italian accent at one point.
