Invergordon is a port town located at Cromarty Firth (a North Sea inlet part of Moray Firth) Easter Ross (Northern Highlands, Scotland). Invergordon/Port Cromarty Firth is currently ranked Scotland's largest cruise port. Inverness is to the southeast, at approx 24 mi (40 km) or at ~30 min drive distance (via A9 Road).

Port Invergordon is operated by "Port of Cromarty Firth" (abbrev POCF). According to the Port Authority CFPA, 2017's passenger influx injected into Highland Scotland's economy over GBP 14 million. Among the nearby popular tourist travel destinations are Loch Ness , Urquhart Castle ruins, Tain (resort town) and Inverness, Cawdor Castle (15th century), Dunrobin Castle (13th century, with Earls of Sutherland family memorabilia). Visitors can also travel north to Glenmorangie Distillery (overlooking Dornoch Firth) and then continue to Dornoch.

Port's cruising season runs from April through late-November/early-December. Port's largest cruise liner  so far is  MSC Meraviglia  (GT 171600 tons, LOA length 315 m, max capacity 5400 passengers) which berthed on May 1, 2018.

In 2016, the port handled 63 ship calls and 97,993 cruise passengers. 2017 was a record-breaking year with around 45% increase in cruise ship tourists. Based on pre-booked ship calls (91), the port expected over 142,000 passengers and the maiden calls of MSC Preziosa , CMV Columbus , MS Hamburg , Seabourn Quest , MS Europa 2 , Marella Celebration . The first call was of AIDAvita  ( AIDA Cruises , on April 12) carrying ~1200 tourists. Season 2017 ended with Black Watch  ( Fred Olsen , on December 3) carrying ~800  tourists.

In 2018, the cruise port handled 171,000 passengers, received bigger-sized liners and the maiden calls of Viking Ocean (ships Viking Sun and Viking Sky ). For 2019 were scheduled 12 maiden port calls and 180,000 tourists (16% increase over 2018).

On November 23, 2018, Port Cromarty Firth Authority announced a GBP 30 million (EUR 34M) port expansion project, scheduled for completion in 2020-Q2. In 2016 were announced port's plans to build a new cruise berth, by adding 215 m (705 ft) quayside to the existing Berth 5. The new (second) quayside has length 218 m (715 ft) and land area 9 acres (36,420 m2). The new facility will be serving exclusively the energy and cruise industries. It will have capacity to handle large-scale energy projects (renewable, oil and gas), and also to berth world's largest cruise liners of RCI-Royal Caribbean 's Oasis-Class (LOA length 362 m, GT 228,000 tons, max capacity 6370 passengers plus 2400 crew).

Port Cromarty is just 5 mi (8 km) from Invergordon (on Firth's opposite coast). Cromarty Firth is best-known for the North Sea oil rigs owned by Global Energy Group. The 2005-founded company has offices in Aberdeen and Inverness). It also owns Nigg Energy Park - a large shipyard (with a drydock ) that specializes in repairs and fabrication of offshore platforms. Along Cromarty Firth are also located all facilities serving cruise vessels, as well as bulk carriers (cargo ships) and oil processing.

Currently, out of Port Invergordon are offered ~90 different cruise shore excursions via partnerships with local premium bus providers.

The first "post-COVID" liner ( Marella Explorer 2 ) visited Invergordon on July 25, 2021, also making an inaugural call at Port Cromarty Firth. The ship was carrying only British passengers and operated British port-only itineraries.

Invergordon cruise terminal

In 2018, Port Invergordon launched for local tourism businesses the "Cruise and Crew Club" initiative for improving customer services and developing port's shore excursion program.

Port changes in 2017 included adding new bollards (for the cruise ship berth) and upgrades to port’s freshwater supply system. In 2018-Q4 started construction works on a new cruise terminal with capacity to handle world's largest passenger liners . The new facility has expanded berth length 372 m (1220 ft), quayside draught 12 m (39 ft) and land area 11 acres (44520 m2 / 479200 ft2). The GBP 30 million project's completion was scheduled for 2020-Q2.

In 2021, Port of Cromarty Firth funded and started works on several improvements, including a pedestrian crossing, upgraded tourist info signage boards, a cruise passenger pick-up/drop-off zone (adjacent to West Harbour) to limit tourists congestion.

Look for bottlenose dolphins when sailing in or out.

There isn't much to the Invergordon cruise terminal, it consists mainly of a long pier and a short pier with room for ships as large as the QE2, but the setting is pleasant, and there's a small shop near the foot of the pier where friendly locals are selling whisky, crafts, jewelry, and Scottish food gifts. The town is only a few minutes walk away. On occasion your when all berths are occupied, your ship will anchor and will tender you ashore.

Invergordon offers a friendly welcome to all cruise ships with pipe bands and traditional dancing giving the passengers a glimpse of what the Highlands of Scotland has to offer its visitors.

The train station is a 10 minute walk, from there trains connect to Inverness (50 minute trip). Fare is £11 one way.

Public bus 25X that departs from Camerons Garden Center, located on Invergordon High Street, less than a 5-minute walk from the terminal. The total trip duration is approximately 50 minutes. £12.60 return per person. see below!

Invergordon Naval Museum and Heritage Centre is open to visitors 10am until 1pm every day that a cruise liner is in port.

One hour is in general enough to explore Invergordon, most guests head to Inverness or beyond.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

A much better alternative is Public Bus 25X leaves from Invergordon High Street, only steps from the cruise pier, to Inverness from 7:45 and every 30 minutes. Journey is 45 minutes. Return trip is £12.60 (day ticket). Even when there are two large cruise liners in port, this local bus line gets expanded with extra buses, so all cruise passengers are well attended too. So if the initial lines at the bus stop seem long, another bus will arrive soon. Great service!

Get the best vantage point of Inverness aboard an open-top double decker bus. This tour operates as a hop-on, hop-off tour that encompasses twelve stops throughout the city. Enjoy the spectacular views and touring freedom from aboard these buses.

The much larger and more well known city of Inverness (population 50,000) is located on the Ness River, 23 miles to the south of Invergordon.

Over the centuries, Inverness was often the focal point of clashes between Highland chiefs, and the Crown. Today the town is a popular tourist attraction as well as a gathering place for the clans of the surrounding area. Many of the traditional Scottish events take place here each summer, including the Highland Games and the Sheep Dog Trials.

Invergordon is also a good starting point for excursions to many of the area's attractions, including the Battlefield of Culloden, Loch Ness, the villages of Tain and Cromarty, historic castles and old whisky distilleries. The local economy relies heavily on tourism, in addition to fishing and agriculture.

Enjoy the picture-perfect scenery and perhaps an opportunity to chat with a Highlander eager to introduce you to his fabled land and its rich heritage.

Great guide to Invergordon port. I work there with cruise ships as a guide and ground handler. 2023 looks set to be our busiest year yet. It looks like there will be some changes to the piers used next year with perhaps more use of Saltburn pier. Unfortunately for most of this year the pipe band has been unable to come into the port due to each piper needing to attend a health and safety briefing – let’s hope they get back in for 2023 as it is a great send off. Also cruising out of the Cromarty Firth between the sandstone peaks – the Sutors – back into the North Sea is a good spot to see some Bottlenose dolphins.

Hi, Melanie! Wow, thanks for this super useful info and the updates! I wish you a great 2023 season! 🙂

Invergordon History

What is Invergordon Known For?

Invergordon is a cruise ship port and an oil, gas, and renewable energy port. It has a mural trail with 17 murals. It is also home to the Stoltman Brothers. They were Britain’s, Europe’s, and the World’s strongest men in 2021.

Early Development and History of the Port

Invergordon has been a trading harbour since the mid-1700s. After becoming a naval base in 1912 Invergordon was very well used as a naval base in both world wars. All the largest naval ships were here and many facilities were built in Invergordon to entertain those working on the ships. There were several cinemas, a theatre, and various sporting complexes.

Invergordon had a large aluminum smelter built in the 1970s. It promised a wealth of jobs for the locals. However, within 10 years the smelter had closed due to the high running costs. It was a traumatic experience for the town. A large grain distillery was also built – at the time the largest in Europe. The distillery still operates today. If you wander through Invergordon you may be able to get a whiff of it!

invergordon cruise port self guided walking tour

Recent Developments and Renovations

More recently Invergordon has become a busy cruise ship destination offering a wide range of shore excursions. The port can accept the largest cruise ships thanks to a deep section of water beside the shore and a deep channel running through the Cromarty Firth.

Cruise ships visiting the Cromarty Firth will likely pass several oil rigs. These are not drilling for oil but are either stored or waiting to go back out to the North Sea oil fields. There are also several businesses that support the energy industry in the Cromarty Firth, including Technip which specialise in laying underground pipelines.

In 2023 it was announced that Invergordon had been chosen as a green port. This means there will be extra investment and opportunities relating to renewable energy projects for the area.

There had been plans for a cruise ship terminal to be built. Given the green port focus, this now seems less likely.

Two brightly painted long canal barges in the waters of a lock gate at Fort Augustus on the Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle Tour. Old village houses can be seen on both banks of the canal, and there are three flags flying outside a house on the right. A man in lifejacket is coiling the rope from the right hand barge around a hook on the ground.

An ornate victorian fountain in iron stands in the foreground and Dornoch Cathedral (visited on our Dunrobin Castle and Falconry Tour) dominates the image. The sun is on the honey-coloured stone of the cathedral (dating from the 1200s) and there is a blue sky above. Three or four leafless trees stand in front of the cathedral.

We will enjoy Dunrobin Castle and Gardens, and the daily falconry demonstration. Returning south we visit the lovely town of Dornoch. It is known for good shops and is famous for the golf course and 13 th  century Cathedral. Finally we either visit Glenmorangie Distillery, or walk through the woods at the stunning Falls of Shin.

Invergordon History

The castleton on this site was originally called Inverbreakie. The name Invergordon did not appear until the castle was acquired by an outspoken Member of Parliament called Sir William Gordon. He built a planned town nearby and named it after himself. However, the gaelic prefix “Inver” means “at the mouth of”. So he named his town “At the mouth of Gordon”. We think that is so appropriate for an outspoken and immodest MP.

Invergordon Murals

A group calling themselves “Invergordon Off the Wall” launched a community project in 2002. They created about a dozen very large murals around the town in order to highlight the culture and heritage of the area. It has been very successful, creating a visual record of local life. We see local sports; local industry; the lifeboat service; the cultural life of the district; the night the Royal Hotel burned and the Pipe Band on the lawns of Invergordon Castle.

Invergordon Murals - Tours from Invergordon Cruise Port

Invergordon Castle

Invergordon Castle had a long history, originally dating from the 1300’s. Fire destroyed the old castle and a new mansionhouse replaced it in 1872. This new house, however, was demolished in 1928, once the owner found himself in financial difficulty.

Invergordon Naval Museum and Heritage Centre

Invergordon has a British Navy history stretching back to the early 19th century. The Naval Museum does a great job of telling this seafaring history. You’ll find the museum easily because of the wall of sea-themed murals. Here we can learn about the crucial role Invergordon played in both World Wars, and hear about the tragic loss of the ship “Natal” in 1915. She blew up in port, with the loss of nearly 400 crew and locals. Inspectors blamed unstable cordite. The famous Invergordon naval mutiny of 1931 is another of the museum’s fascinating stories. The navy base finally closed in 1956.

Invergordon Whisky

Invergordon has had a long relationship with whisky. Even legal stills have a two hundred year track record in the district because Teaninich Distillery was founded in 1817. It had plenty of illicit competition, but it would be the 1830’s before the next legal rival appeared on the scene.

Dalmore Distillery

Dalmore Distillery, established 1839, sits prettily on the shore of the Cromarty Firth, only a couple of miles from Invergordon. Mackenzies bought it in 1867 and as a result Dalmore began using the Mackenzie emblem and motto. So the bottles now carry the instantly recognisable 12-pointed Royal Stag and the perfect motto for a scotch whisky, Luceo non Uro meaning “I Shine not Burn!” We like the distillery tour Dalmore offers, so sometimes find ourselves there if our guests choose to craft a custom tour with us.

Invergordon Distillery

Invergordon distillery was built in 1961 in order to help tackle the unemployment caused by the navy leaving in 1956. It is one of only six grain distilleries in Scotland (as opposed to the malt distilleries). Their Coffey Stills produce some of the finest grain whisky in the world. A company called Whyte and Mackay acquired the distillery in 1993.

Whyte and Mackay

Whyte and Mackay are an old company, founded in 1844 and based in Glasgow. In 1993 the company was owned by “American Brands” but nowadays Whyte & Mackay is owned by Philipinnes-based Emperador Inc.

Invergordon Port Custom Tour

If you wish to see and do other things while in Invergordon we can accommodate that too. We can build custom tours from Invergordon Cruise Port adding any other places, activities or experiences for you.
