While visiting NYC, consider checking out one or two of the best cities near New York . The Big Apple’s convenient location is just a few hours from several awesome destinations, like Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Boston.

Whether you only have time for a day trip from NYC , or you have a couple of days, I recommend taking advantage of it. Visiting one of the cities near Manhattan will give you a breath of fresh air from the hustle and bustle of NYC, and it’s a great way to maximize your time, especially if you won’t return to the area anytime soon.

Also, since there are several big cities near NYC , it’s quite easy to visit one or two of them. You can rent a car in NYC or, depending on which town you want to visit, take an organized tour. In this guide, I’ll help you choose a city to explore, although I’ll tell you now that they all offer something different.

1. Philadelphia, PA, a historic city near New York

Just a two-hour drive from NYC, Philadelphia’s top attractions are waiting. As one of the most historic cities near New York, you’ll find no shortage of things to do here.

Of course, you must do the touristy things, especially if it’s your first time here. Be sure to visit Independence Hall , the Liberty Bell , the Betsy Ross House , and Penn’s Landing , which often hosts events, vendors, and activities.

Philly also has amazing museums, like the Franklin Institute and the Mutter Museum . The Philadelphia Museum of Art is one of the best, but even if you don’t go inside, you should still run up the Rocky Steps and get a photo of the Rocky statue .

There are all kinds of dining options here, from Reading Terminal Market to the iconic Philly cheesesteaks at Pat’s and Geno’s. You can also find lots of gourmet restaurants in Rittenhouse Square , along with high-end shops and casual stores.

It’s worth the 4.5-hour drive to see the historic attractions in Washington, D.C. , which range from presidential monuments and state buildings to internationally recognized museums and institutions. For starters, the Smithsonian institutes appeal to all interests, although some of the most popular are the National Air and Space Museum , the Museum of Natural History , the National Museum of the American Indian , and the National Museum of American History .

You’ll also love seeing the impressive memorials and monuments here, like the Lincoln Memorial . The Jefferson Memorial is by the Tidal Basin and looks beautiful in the spring when the cherry blossoms bloom. Year-round, you can get a lovely view of the Washington Monument and the Reflecting Pool , and there are several war memorials where you can pay your respects.

Don’t forget to stop by the U.S. Capitol building and the White House , which offers free (reserved) tours. I also recommend adding Arlington National Cemetery , the Library of Congress , and the U.S. Botanic Garden to your list.

You can see a handful of historic landmarks along the Freedom Trail , which starts downtown at the Boston Common . This former cow pasture is one of the oldest parks in the country, so it’s a great starting point. Along the trail, you’ll see the Paul Revere House , Old North Church , the Massachusetts State House , and much more.

The Freedom Trail also goes through the North End , Boston’s oldest neighborhood and home to the city’s Little Italy community. Another neighborhood you should visit is Beacon Hill , which has quaint cobblestone roads and gas street lamps.

If you like museums, you’ll have plenty to choose from in Boston. A few of the most popular ones are the Museum of Fine Arts , the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum , the Museum of Science , the Boston Children’s Museum , and the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum .

Of course, you don’t have to stay inside all day. The Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway , Boston Public Garden , and Fenway Park are all awesome outdoor venues. Also, don’t miss the Faneuil Hall Marketplace for food, shopping, and more history.

4. Baltimore, MD, a city near New York with lots to do

Baltimore is one of New York’s nearby cities , specifically 3.5 hours to the southwest. One of the biggest draws of this port city is its Inner Harbor , where you’ll find the National Aquarium and seafood restaurants where you can try Maryland crab cakes. Water taxis and cruises are also popular, so consider something like this lunch cruise through the Inner Harbor and along the Patapsco River.

There are other attractions on the waterfront, including the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture , the Maryland Science Center , Federal Hill Park , and the American Visionary Art Museum .

Downtown Baltimore’s Arts District is a great place to hang out and explore since it’s the site of the Walters Art Museum , the George Peabody Library , and other institutions.

Along the Patapsco River is the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine . Here, you can see an important site from the War of 1812, which inspired the lyrics to the Star-Spangled Banner .

Another photogenic spot is Graffiti Alley , north of downtown. If you keep traveling north, you can visit the hipster neighborhood of Hampden and the beautiful Sherwood Gardens .

5. Atlantic City, NJ, one of the best coastal cities near New York

Atlantic City is a coastal city near NY with history, entertainment, dining, and more. Plus, it’s just a 2.5-hour drive from the Big Apple, so you can easily make this a couple’s day trip or weekend getaway.

AC’s famous boardwalk is its most popular attraction, and it even inspired the Monopoly boardwalk. Since 1870, the 5.5-mile boardwalk has been attracting tourists and beachgoers. While you’ll find typical boardwalk features like shops and food stalls, Atlantic City stands out for the 124-year-old Steel Pier , its rolling chairs, and the Entrance to the Stars with handprints from celebrity visitors like Cher, Johnny Carson, and Frank Sinatra.

The boardwalk is also lined with glitzy casinos, and you don’t have to be a gambler to have fun at one of them. These casino resorts are full of gourmet restaurants, luxury shops, and intimate theaters where you can watch a concert or show.

Towards the northern end of the boardwalk, you can admire the views from the 171-foot-tall Absecon Lighthouse . It’s also worth the 20-minute drive to Margate , another New Jersey city close to NYC . There, you can visit Lucy the Elephant , a 65-foot novelty statue.

Atlantic City is one of the best places to visit in New Jersey , and it’s close to other beaches like Ocean City and Cape May .

6. Providence, RI, one of the best cities near New York for families

In just under four hours, you can experience the New England charm of Providence , Rhode Island. This major city near New York City is worth the drive thanks to its historical landmarks, entertainment options, and cultural institutions. It’s no wonder it makes for one of the best road trips from NYC .

Providence is home to several universities, including Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), so it has that vibrant college town vibe. At the same time, it’s one of the oldest cities in New England, so there is a lot of history to discover.

For example, you can take in the culture and legacy of Providence at the RISD Museum , the Providence Performing Arts Center , and the Providence Athenaeum , one of the oldest libraries in the U.S.

For a great overview of the city’s history, walk along Benefit Street , which is lined with Federal period homes, the Governor Stephen Hopkins House , and the John Brown House .

Back in the downtown (or “Downcity”) area, you’ll find amazing Art Deco and Beaux-Arts architecture as well as Victorian facades. Cross the Woonasquatucket River and visit Waterplace Park and the famous WaterFire sculpture.

You can discover the different neighborhoods of Providence and some hidden gems with this small group tour . You’ll visit the Rhode Island State House , see the views from Prospect Terrace Park , go to Providence’s Little Italy, Federal Hill , and more.

7. Albany, NY, another interesting city near New York

Albany is another cool city outside New York City that you should visit. It’s three hours north of NYC and serves as the state capitol, so it’s full of impressive governmental buildings.

Besides the New York State Capitol , I recommend visiting the Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza , which consists of several offices, government buildings, and The Egg Performing Arts Center .

Speaking of the arts, Albany is home to the Albany Institute of History & Art as well as the New York State Museum , which has 12 million artifacts like gems, minerals, fossils, and ancient artwork. It’s also worth visiting the museum and planetarium at the Albany Heritage Area Visitors Center .

If you prefer the outdoors, be sure to check out Washington Park and the Albany Pine Bush Preserve . Also, Albany is near the Adirondack Mountains , one of the best things to see in NY state .

Back in the city proper, I also recommend some historic estates that were built in the late 18 th century. Cherry Hill was built in 1787 for the noble Van Rensselaer family, while the Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site dates back to the 1760s. More recently, the USS Slater is a destroyer escort ship that launched in 1944 and today serves as a museum.

8. New Haven, CT, one of the best cities near New York for couples

New Haven , CT is a little over two hours northeast of NYC, so it’s the perfect place to visit for a weekend. This city near New York is along Long Island Sound, so it’ll give you a different viewpoint of Long Island.

You can get a beautiful panorama of the water from East Rock Park , which also has a rose garden and hiking trails. Downtown, New Haven Green is a lovely park and National Historic Landmark with several 19 th -century churches. I also recommend Lighthouse Point Park , a picturesque area with nice views, a playground, and a carousel.

If you’re into art and culture, New Haven is one of the best cities near New York to visit. It’s home to Yale University , which has its own Art Gallery, Center for British Art, and the Peabody Museum . Off-campus, there are other institutions like the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library , the New Haven Museum , and Shubert Theater . The Shore Line Trolley Museum and the Connecticut Science Center are great places to visit with kids.

Finally, take a walk down Wooster Street in the city center, which is known as New Haven’s Little Italy. Here, you can pop into Italian bakeries and pizza shops to try New Haven-style pizza, which is coal-fired and has a thin crust.

9. Hartford, CT, another one of the best cities to visit near New York

Hartford , CT is another city to visit near New York , and it’s just 45 minutes north of New Haven. As the capital city of Connecticut, Hartford has lots of attractions as well as shopping and dining venues.

First, the Connecticut State Capitol features beautiful Victorian Gothic architecture and offers guided and self-guided tours. You can also see amazing Gothic Revival structures in the Coltsville Historic District , including the Church of the Good Shepherd .

Hartford was incorporated in 1784, so some of the oldest buildings in the country are here. For example, you can visit author Harriet Beecher Stowe ’s former home and the Ancient Burying Ground , which has gravestones dating back to 1648. Mark Twain lived in the city in the late 1800s, and you can take a tour of his Victorian mansion.

If you’re traveling with family, check out the Connecticut Science Center and Bushnell Park . The latter is the site of a 1914 Stein and Goldstein carousel and the Museum of Connecticut History . Not far is Riverside Park , an outdoor space with walking trails and playgrounds. There, you can enjoy the fresh air or take a cruise along the Connecticut River .

Finally, I recommend the Elizabeth Park Rose Garden outside the city center, especially if you’re traveling as a couple.

10. Syracuse, NY, the best city near New York to visit with friends

The last city near New York that I recommend is Syracuse , NY. It’s about 4.5 hours from NYC, and it’s in the Finger Lakes region , specifically near Onondaga Lake.

While you’re here, be sure to stop by Onondaga Lake Park , also known as the Central Park of Central New York. This waterfront area has over seven miles of walking paths and trails, a dog park, a playground, and a Salt Museum .

Over in the city center, check out Clinton Square , a downtown park surrounded by beautiful buildings. The park is within walking distance of several popular attractions like the Erie Canal Museum , the Museum of Science and Technology , and the Landmark Theatre . It’s also close to the Niagara Mohawk Building , an Art Deco “cathedral of light” that served as the headquarters for the Niagara Hudson Electric Company.

If it’s a rainy day or you want to pick up some souvenirs, you’ll find everything you’re looking for at Destiny USA , the largest mall in New York. The Everson Museum of Art and the Community Folk Art Center are also worth visiting.

Rochester, New York is primarily famous for its music culture, but you’d be surprised to learn that most of its points of interest aren’t related to that at all!

There are many options for what to do in this beautiful city.

The options are all varied and diverse, so there’s something for everyone.

1. Highland Park

Highland Park is one of Rochester’s most famous places to visit, due in part to its beautiful landscaping, teeming flora, and delightful arboretum.

With scenic gullies and little hills set over 150 acres of land, it’s a great place to go sightseeing and is packed with attractions both on and near its grounds.

Designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, the stunning park contains over 1,200 lilac shrubs as part of its world-renowned arboretum.

Other beautiful plant species include Japanese Maples, barberries, dwarf evergreens, magnolias, Andromeda, azaleas, house chestnuts, rhododendrons, and mountain laurel.

You’ll also see tons of exotic trees as well as wildflowers local to the area.

A huge pansy bed of 10,000 plants is arranged in a different pattern every year.

Among the interesting spots, you’ll notice while walking around Highland Park are Warner Castle, the Greater Rochester Vietnam Memorial, the John Dunbar Memorial Pavilion, and the Lamberton Conservatory.

2. RMSC Strasenburgh Planetarium

The RMSC Strasenburgh Planetarium is one of the most loved Rochester attractions, and it should be on your list of places to go if you’re fascinated by astronomy and the world beyond our planet.

It is famous for putting on incredible shows that educate, enlighten, and fascinate the community regarding heavenly bodies and the universe.

Star shows are probably the prized and most loved attraction of the shows that the RMSC Strasenburgh Planetarium organizes.

These are performed via a star projector that presents an accurate image of the galaxy, boasting planets, the sun, and more than 8,000 stars in perfect clarity, as they would appear on a clear night!

If you happen to be in town this weekend, the RMSC Strasenburgh Planetarium also puts on laser shows every Saturday night.

3. The Strong National Museum of Play

The Strong National Museum of Play encompasses an impressive 150,000 square feet that is all entirely dedicated to toys, games, and forms of entertainment that many children love and grew up with.

Galleries and exhibits are dedicated to a wide range of familiar figures, faces, and products.

It also boasts the state of New York’s only indoor garden of butterflies and the International Center for the History of Electronic Games, which holds over 30,000 consoles and games in its collection.

Situated in a stunning and awe-inspiring mansion of Colonial Revival style, it was built and finished in 1905 as the home for George Eastman.

Eastman was the founder of the famous Eastman Kodak Company, responsible for the modernization and widespread nature of photography, both in its professional and fun aspects.

It’s hard to comprehend that he lived right here in Rochester.

Upon his passing, he left his mansion to the University of Rochester, which then donated it to the museum to be used.

The mansion was turned into what it is now: the George Eastman Museum.

For water sports, you can go fishing, swimming, or boating – or just sunbathe on the beaches available.

In the summer and winter, if you plan to stay in this part of Rochester, you can rent shelters on park grounds.

For other sports, you can head to the basketball or volleyball courts and the softball fields.

It makes use of more than 200 different interactive, up-close exhibits with the goal of teaching its guests about the magical joys of science.

Over 1.2 million items are on display, meaning there’s no shortage of what to see at this New York gem.

Among the many things to enjoy at this Museum & Science Center are attractions that let you build robots, travel through space, climb a wall, load and shoot a catapult, use lasers, and more!

Some particularly interesting exhibits are Science on a Sphere, which showcases a 3D display of the earth right in front of you.

You can even watch lightning bolts, use a virtual reality simulator, and talk to an expert about frogs!

9. Rochester Public Market

The Rochester Public Market is a fun way to get a taste of local life.

It runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, but expect it to be harder to find parking if you go this weekend since Saturdays tend to be packed!

The market is run by the city and is a gathering spot for all sorts of vendors from the town and even in the general New York area.

It sells great products like fresh fruit and vegetables, flowers, coffee, cheeses, honey, baked goods, and artisan products.

It’s a great option for what to do if you want to support local vendors while learning more about the city’s community, and since it occurs multiple times a week, there’s a chance it’ll be going on tomorrow!

10. Charlotte–Genesee Lighthouse

The Charlotte–Genesee Lighthouse sits on Lake Ontario, and as the oldest lighthouse still active with this location, it’s one of the best points of interest for those who enjoy historical pursuits.

Measuring 40 feet high with 42 steps and 11 ladder rungs that lead up to the 12-foot lantern room, it’s a towering sight to behold.

The Charlotte–Genesee Lighthouse was first built in 1822.

Recently, it was refurbished, and its 2014 restoration has turned it into the faithful but renewed depiction we see today.

The tower and lantern were both restored and a replica of the original lens was put in place.

Now, it rests in Charlotte, Rochester, New York.

Tours that let you into the lighthouse are available, and you can check out the keeper’s home with an interior museum, too!

Frontier Field is the place to be if you want to watch an exciting game of baseball.

It was a replacement for the Silver Stadium of New York.

It was built in 1996 to take over as the home of the city’s professional baseball.

With 10,840 seats, new grassy turf, and a 24 x 32-foot video scoreboard, it’s a modern delight to be in.

Over the years, Frontier Field has been home to many different sports teams.

This includes Rochester Rattlers of lacrosse, Rochester Raging Rhinos for soccer, and Rochester Red Wings for Minor league baseball.

The latter is the only team that currently calls Frontier Field home.

Most interestingly, school visits to Mount Hope Cemetery are often arranged, with specially made tours designed just for kids.

14. Susan B. Anthony Museum & House

Susan B. Anthony Museum & House is a crucial part of the history of Rochester, New York and women’s rights advocacy.

Located in downtown Rochester, these places dedicated to the late civil rights leader are worth a visit to learn about how her actions paved the way for the rights many enjoy today.

The museum building is where Anthony spent most of her years and it’s also where she was arrested in 1872 after leading several women to vote illegally.

Research materials, memorabilia, and artifacts that detail the story of Anthony’s life are meticulously arranged throughout the museum.

Her legacy and struggles are both honored and used as teaching tools for visitors.

Anthony would pass away in this home after performing Failure Is Impossible, one of her most famous speeches.

Aside from being a museum, the Susan B. Anthony Museum & House is also a learning center for the younger community, with multiple programs that are designed to educate and enlighten the youth.

You can also simply opt to tour the home, which has three levels.

Docents lead these hour-long tours and provide you with lots of information.

Before you leave the area, head across the road to the Susan B. Anthony Square Park, which has beautiful flora and the iconic sculpture by Pepsy Kettavong, “Let’s Have Tea”.

15. The White Lady’s Castle

The White Lady’s Castle

The White Lady’s Castle is situated close to a Rochester, New York forest.

It is crumbling and falling apart.

With an appearance like a medieval castle, it’s surprising to note that it was actually built in the early 1900s as a dining hall.

Indeed, the White Lady’s Castle was part of a hotel once.

Today, all that is left are some stairs leading up to a wall that appears like a rampart.

Legend has surrounded it since the ruins became more and more worn out, which is understandable given how much it looks like a European castle of ancient times.

This has actually led to a Rochester legend about the “white lady”.

The story states that it was once the home to a daughter and her very protective mother.

When the daughter went for a walk and didn’t return, her mother thought that she had eloped with a suitor.

This caused her to go mad, and her ghost now haunts the site and scares away those who come by.

Of course, this is just a myth, but it’s turned the White Lady’s Castle into one of the city’s tourist attractions!

16. Rochester Lilac Festival

The Rochester Lilac Festival is hands down one of the best activities you’ll find in the city.

It takes place in New York’s famous Highland Park and is one of the continent’s biggest flower festivals.

We’ve talked briefly about Highland Park and its lilacs, but did you know how they got there?

John Dunbar – also known as Johnny Lilacseed – was a horticulturist who planted 20 kinds of lilac in the park in 1892.

This eventually led to more and more lilacs, and now there are 1,200 lilac shrubs and over 500 kinds of them!

The Lilac Festival began in 1898 and now occurs annually for ten days in May.

Live music, crafts, races, art, food, and competition for Lilac Festival Queen all make this among the coolest and most wonderful things to see in the city!

17. Seabreeze Amusement Park

It first opened its doors in 1879 and is one of New York’s oldest amusement parks.

Seabreeze Amusement Park boasts over 70 different attractions with different options for all ages.

19. Visit A Theatre

If you’re wondering what to do in Rochester tonight, consider one of their many theaters.

After all, going to a performance is one of the best activities that you can take part in while you’re looking for fun in Rochester, New York!

Eastman Theatre is the location of the one and only Kodak Hall , famous for hosting incredible music performances, screening silent films, and showcasing dance performances.

Since it opened in 1922, it’s kept much of its original aesthetic, maintaining that 1920s opulence and charm.

A new wing provides a recital hall, recording studio, rehearsal room, and teaching studios!

For kids, there’s the Theatre Young Kids Enjoy, or TYKES for short.

As a non-profit organization, it is designed to captivate young audiences with professional actors and meaningful, lessoned-filled stories.

Costumes are vibrant, scripts are smart and appropriate, and settings often have stories set in faraway lands and realms of wonder and fantasy.

The intimate space provides a cozy, homey feel while the equipment is all technologically advanced.

Finally, as one more option for adults (and kids who can sit through a full performance), there’s the Geva Theatre Center.

It opened in 1972 within the building that was once the Naval Armory-Convention Hall of 1868.

Its stories history features stars like Anna Pavlova and Enrico Caruso.

As a professional company of regional theatre, the Geva now is dedicated to the performance of reimagined classic American plays, with twists of originality and modernity.

20. Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County Secret Room

The Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County is, in itself, one of the points of interest you’ll find in this New York city.

But there’s a more unique reason it should be on your list of places to go.

In the children’s book section of the library, there is a fun little secret room that is designed to be as accessible as possible even to wheelchair users.

A building near to the current library location is the Rundel Memorial Library Building across the street (more on that in a future number!).

This is where the central library was originally housed, and it had a secret room there.

When the new building was made for the library in the 90s, it was only natural that a secret room was included in the plans.

The room is hidden behind a bookshelf, which leads to a wide but short door.

Through it, over 200 different dolls are located. The collection began as a school project conducted by George W. Cooper, a principal, to exchange Shirley Temple dolls across the country to different schools.

180 or so dolls were received, made from many different materials, and the collection was donated in 1940 to the library.

The secret room also has a quilt in it made by history students of the 4th and 5th grades, made up of images of the city.

21. Holy Sepulchre Cemetery

The Holy Sepulchre Cemetery is Rochester, New York’s biggest cemetery, set on more than 332 acres of land.

It’s the final burial location for many residents of Rochester, each marker beautiful and stunning with mausoleums, columbaria, and more in Victorian styles.

In 1823, the first Catholic parish in the city, St. Patrick’s, began a burial plot that became filled rather quickly over time.

Four more parishes in the area had their own separate grounds.

Eventually, Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid decided that all Catholic parishes should share one burial location, hence the creation of the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

It was finished in 1871.

More than 300,000 people rest here, including senators, humanitarians, bishops, and celebrities.

The cemetery is one of the free places to visit in the city, but be respectful if you visit!

It’s worth noting that it is closed at night, so if you want to partake in some fun spooky ghost-hunting, you’d be better off looking elsewhere!

22. Rundel Memorial Building’s Table Of The Fox Sisters

When we talked about the Central Library of Rochester, we mentioned the Rundel building, and for good reason.

Not only is the Rundel Memorial Building among the many Rochester attractions, but it’s also home to the table that was once believed to assist in communing with the dead.

It’s certainly a fun sight to behold, and the story is quite something!

In the mid-19th century, spiritualism was all the rage in the United States.

Among the pioneers of this belief and “celebrities” of a sort were Kate, Leah, and Margeret Fox, all sisters from Hydesville, New York.

They claimed their childhood home was haunted by a spirit that they communicated with using knocks on furniture, which gave them information about the ghosts.

Bones were even found in the house’s walls corresponding to a spirit’s story, but it’s unknown if they were planted.

The Fox sisters used their fame from their successful “clairvoyance” in their home to move to this city.

They began careers as mediums and performed many seances, some attended by huge celebrities.

The table they used for their rituals now rests in the Rundel Memorial Building.

It is a trick table designed to produce the knocking noises the sisters claimed was proof of their abilities, and its secrets were revealed when they admitted to their acts of trickery.

23. House of Guitars

The House of Guitars is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Rochester, NY, especially if you’re a music-lover.

It’s the biggest shop for guitars on the entire planet, created by brothers Armand and Bruce Schaubroek in 1964 from the basement of their mother’s home.

They sold guitars during the night and worked typical jobs during the day.

From its conception, the House of Guitars has geared its products towards younger individuals, with modern selections at affordable prices.

It’s gained a lot of fame, with the Beatles, Marc Maron, Weird Al Yankovic, Garth Brooks, Les Paul, and Metallica all stopping by at some point to purchase a guitar.

The House of Guitars sits in the Grange Hall building, located in Irondequoit, covering three floors and then encompassing additional buildings that the brothers bought to accommodate their stock.

The result is a huge labyrinth of buildings in Rochester connected to one another.

With equipment, a studio, a school, a repair shop, and a stage, among other things, it’s an impressive complex that’s fun, hip, and exciting.

24. Memorial Art Gallery

The Memorial Art Gallery in downtown Rochester, New York, is a wonderful location dedicated to community support and enhancement.

Founded in 1913, it spans 14 acres and has more than 12,000 different contemporary items set up and displayed.

The wider campus of the Memorial Art Gallery hosts a number of activities, like tours, lectures, fin exhibitions, and even entertainment in the form of performances and concerts.

It focuses on art, creativity, and authenticity, and there’s no telling what you’ll find when you explore this whimsical and meaningful Rochester community spot.

High Falls is a product of this New York city’s special location, right on the Genesee River.

This allows for one of the top tourist attractions of the city to be all-natural and somehow still smack in the convenient center of downtown.

The Genesee River tumbles down from the cascading High Falls, falling 95 feet to its destination from the escarpment.

Historical buildings dating back to the 19th century surround it to add to its aesthetically pleasing appearance.

From High Falls Terrace Park, you can get a stunning view of High Falls.

While you’re at it, enjoy a fun meal at some of the restaurants.

You can also opt to go to High Falls Lookout to view it up-close or walk onto the Pont de Rennes Bridge for a more personal view.

26. Watch A Local Performance

Local performances offer fun options for things to see that will delight and culturally enrich you.

If you’ve got some free time this weekend, why not try to head to one of the greatly acclaimed showcases by one of these New York staples?

One great option is the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra .

Founded in 1922, it is known for its high standards and dedication to community education.

Over 130 concerts are played yearly by the Philharmonic Orchestra, with more than 150,000 audience members in person and even more listening to FM radio rebroadcasts.

The excellence of this orchestra and their innovative talent has earned them fame across the country!

Another good option is the Rochester City Ballet .

It was created in 1987 and specializes in contemporary performances for people from all walks of life in the local community.

Many of its shows have earned multiple rewards, including some Sensory-Friendly performances geared towards children on the spectrum of Autism.

It also puts on workshops, donates to charity, and classes in affiliation with the Draper Center for Dance Education.

27. 1872 Monument

1872 Monument

The 1872 Monument is one of the places to visit in New York with an inspiring and sobering history.

It was on the election day of its titular year that the late, great Susan B. Anthony marched from Madison Street to this exact location, leading a group of women.

This was done despite the fact that voting rights had not been given to women, and the men at the polling place were hesitant to break the law despite her persistence.

Back then, this location was a barbershop where polls were being held.

She and the women with her filed their votes regardless of the illegality of their actions, resulting in Anthony’s arrest, trial, conviction, and fine – though she never did pay a single cent of that fine!

Now, the 1872 Monument stands to honor her actions.

It is a sculpture of bronze, featuring two pillars astride a locked ballot box.

On the 89th anniversary of the creation of the 19th Amendment – the Amendment which finally granted the right to vote to women – in August 2009, the monument was dedicated to Anthony.

28. Warner Castle

Warner Castle is located in Highland Park and is a bit of a hidden gem of Rochester, New York.

It was built by Horation Gates Warner in 1854 as his private home.

He was a man who wore many wealthy hats, as he was a newspaper publisher, bank president, and even court judge!

The home was built in order to appear similar to the castle of the Clan Douglas in Scotland, which Warner loved when he visited the country.

Warner Castle was constructed in its image by Merwin Austin, an architect, on an expanse of 50 acres of farmland.

Warner would live happily in the large building until 1876 when he passed away.

The Warner family continued to own the home until 1902, at which point it was sold to multiple private owners in succession.

Many added special touches that still remain today, like the sunken garden commissioned by the Dennis family in 1912.

After passing out of private ownership, the Warner Castle was a sanitarium for a whopping two decades and then, at last, was transferred to the ownership of the city.

Now, Warner Castle is the Landmark Society of Western New York headquarters.

Some remodeling has occurred, but the castle’s primary features, like its detailed woodwork, luxurious staircase, and regally high ceilings, remain.

Unfortunately, its interior is not available for public viewing, but the beautiful grounds and its gardens are!

Strolling through them is one of the best and most fun things to do in Rochester, NY.

The venue is the permanent home of Judy Chicago’s massive installation The Dinner Party.

7.  New York Aquarium

At New York's one and only aquarium, see a living re-creation of the Pacific coastline, and catch sight of various East River species, plus some truly awesome sharks and sea jellies. Fantasize about extending your summer as you visit Glover's Reef, a 150,000-gallon tank stocked with 35 species of marine life from the coast of Belize, including jawfish and moray eels.

This market has elevated the vintage-shopping experience, setting a new standard for both goods and food vendors, and emphasizing local purveyors where possible. Its mini-empire now includes markets in DUMBO and Chelsea, as well as two food-focused Smorgasburg outposts. It’s as good a people-watching spot as you’ll find – plenty of established and wanna-be designers mill about – and the eats alone are worth the trip. 

9.  Brooklyn Heights and Brooklyn Promenade

In order to mollify the residents of Brooklyn Heights, city planner Robert Moses built this park atop the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway to muffle the street noise when it opened in 1950. Today, you might forget that traffic is moving along beneath you while strolling the esplanade. The picture-perfect views of Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Statue of Liberty are admittedly distracting.

10.  Brooklyn Bridge Park

Unlike the sprawling meadows of Prospect Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park wasn’t built to replicate the area’s serene natural environment. Instead, the park transformed a defunct shipping and storage complex into an urban playground complete with terraces, picnic areas, and athletic fields. Don’t leave without a ride on Jane’s Carousel, the park’s beautifully restored 1920s merry-go-round.

11.  Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)

BAM, which showcases local and out-of-town companies, is one of New York’s most prominent cultural institutions. The Howard Gilman Opera House, with its Federal-style columns and carved marble, is a beautiful dance venue. Each fall, BAM’s Next Wave Festival highlights established and experimental dance groups; in the spring, there’s an assortment of African and modern dance and ballet.

Located in a former military residence on the grounds of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, this small museum chronicles the mighty history of the former shipbuilding center – which, at its peak during World War II, employed close to 70,000 people. Take a deep dive into the area’s history from Native American origins to the Industrial Revolution at the museum’s permanent exhibit or board a weekend bus tour of the 300-acre yard.

13.  Brooklyn Children’s Museum

When it was founded in 1899, the BCM was the country’s first museum specifically made for children. Today it’s one of the most comprehensive, with a permanent collection of 30,000 objects, including musical instruments, masks, dolls, and fossils. Kids have fun while learning (sneaky!) at interactive exhibits like “World Brooklyn,” a pint-size cityscape lined by faux stores where young’uns can weigh ingredients and knead pretend dough at the Mexican Bakery, or shop for cans of Indian ghee and Turkish candy at the International Grocery.

14.  Green-Wood Cemetery

Founded in 1838 as a rural cemetery in Greenwood Heights, this site was inspired by the Pére Lachaise Cemetery in Paris and Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Having vied with Niagara Falls as New York State’s greatest tourist attraction, it gained landmark status in 1966. Filled with Victorian mausoleums, cherubs, and gargoyles, Green-Wood is the resting place of some half-million New Yorkers, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Leonard Bernstein, and Boss Tweed. But there’s more to do here than grave-spot: Check out the massive Gothic arch at the main entrance or climb to the top of Battle Hill, a pivotal spot during the Battle of Brooklyn in 1776.

15.  Prospect Park Zoo

At this interactive wildlife center, kids can walk along the Discovery Trail and come face to face with Oggie and his new pal Dixie, two North American river otters. Keep hopping down the path to find the Australian Walkabout's kangaroo and the new rock wallabies, whose grooved hind paws easily grip the boulders in their steep habitat. A pair of native South African owls – recognizable by their bright white faces – roost in the aviary along the trail. On spring days, you might also find a commotion at the sea lion court: the graceful swimmers like to entertain onlookers by diving, high-fiving their keepers, and chowing down on fishy food.

Kleinhans Music Hall Kleinhans Music Hall

Kleinhans Music Hall was the dying wish of both Edward and Mary Seaton Kleinhans, who passed away within three months of each other in 1934. The couple, who had made a small fortune with a high-end clothing store, made a bequest in their will "to erect a suitable music hall … for the use, enjoyment and benefit of the people of the City of Buffalo." Just about six years later in 1940, the Kleinhans Music Hall debuted with a concert by the Buffalo Philharmonic. Since then, a number of big names have performed in the Hall's three auditoriums, with acts ranging from Yo-Yo Ma to Ben Folds.

One TripAdvisor user says that Kleinhans is "one of the best performance halls in the world!" going on to say that all of the seats offer great views of the stage and that the acoustics are excellent.

Famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright called this complex of structures he designed in the early 1900s for New York businessman Darwin D. Martin "the opus," believing it exemplified his prairie house architectural ideal. More than a century later, the organic architecture has been rebuilt to its former grandeur and continues to enchant guests who come from all around to view the "domestic symphony," as Wright called it. The structures include the main house, the pergola, the conservatory, the carriage house and the Wisteria Museum Shop.

Visitors really appreciate the wealth of information that the docent-led tours provide. One TripAdvisor user calls this complex a "fabulous venue," recommending that visitors take the two-hour tour: "[It's] well worth the extra dollars to see all the rooms on the property."

Shea's Performing Arts Center Shea's Performing Arts Center

If you want a little Broadway on your Buffalo vacation, look no further than Shea's Performing Arts Center. Opened in 1926 as a venue for silent films, the center hosts touring Broadway troupes and other special events. Several decades ago, a group of community leaders saved the building from destruction by getting it listed on the National Historic Registry. Today, the theater continues to be renovated, but even still, the interior is pretty magnificent — you'll see a sea of plush red seats surrounded by a lavish stage and a richly colored ceiling.

One TripAdvisor user recommends stopping by the theater even if you don't have time for a show: "Just take a look at the stage and facilities ... You'll think you stepped into a theater in Paris. It's over the top ornate and a true gem."

Rising 32 stories into the sky, the building has 1,520 windows that peer out into downtown Buffalo and beyond. In fact, it's not the architecture but the views that lure most visitors to City Hall. Take an elevator up to the 25th floor and walk up three more floors to an observation deck, which overlooks Lake Erie, the Buffalo River and the busy city below.

One TripAdvisor user praises the sight from the observation deck: "After a trip in a rather scary lift, we got to the most amazing 360 degree view. Indeed you could see the mist at Niagara Falls."

Coca-Cola Field Coca-Cola Field

Coca-Cola Field is home to the Minor League baseball team, the Buffalo Bisons. This stadium, which seats 18,025, is one of the first examples of a retro-style stadium in a city center. First Niagara Center First Niagara Center

Home to the National Hockey League's Buffalo Sabres, the First Niagara Center is also a performance venue for groups like the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and singers like Justin Timberlake. The center can seat more than 19,070 for hockey games, and when the center is rearranged for concerts and other events, it can seat even more.

One TripAdvisor user is very succinct in his comments about the First Niagara Center: "Free parking within a quarter mile, easy to get to third level on escalators, nice scoreboard, average food, currently a bad hockey team." The Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park is a must-do for those interested in military history (or those with kids who like big boats and helicopters). The park contains two ships, a submarine and a handful of helicopters, plus a number of well-designed exhibits on everything from POWs to Marine Corps memorabilia.

One TripAdvisor user says that the park was definitely worth the $10 admission price: "Explore navy ships, and take a step back in time. … Overheard two kids 8 or 9-ish saying how cool it was."

"We had a great time tailgating and being amongst fans." Others highlight the good food and fairly affordable tickets and parking rates. A smaller number criticize the craziness of the crowd, citing too much alcohol.

Buffalo Zoo Buffalo Zoo

The Buffalo Zoo's starring attractions are two polar bear cubs called Luna and Kali. In addition to these cute little fur balls, the zoo houses a variety of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds. The eco-rainforest exhibit is a hit with visitors; many people say that the rope bridge across the exhibit offers a great view of the turtles and alligators below.

Opening its gates back in 1875, the Buffalo Zoo is the third-oldest zoo in the country. As such, there are continuing renovations to the zoo that some visitors have found disappointing. Another TripAdvisor user praised its improvements: "It is amazing how far along the zoo has come over the years. There had been so many new attractions and exhibits and it looks like a world class zoo." Others were even more complimentary of the venue, citing its great staff and happy-looking animals.

Set on the east end of Lake Erie, Buffalo is the second most populated city in New York and a wonderful destination for sightseeing, shopping, and enjoying some leisure time. The city is well known for its lovely historical buildings, including the Art Deco-style City Hall.

In recent years, Buffalo has undergone a billion-dollar revitalization and now offers some wonderful public spaces in the city center and along the waterfront. Getting around is easy on the Buffalo Metro Rail, an above-ground train that offers free service for stops in the downtown and Canalside area.

If you have time to explore areas outside downtown, the attractions in and around Delaware Park are well worth seeing. Buffalo also makes a good base for visiting nearby Niagara Falls , New York and Niagara Falls , Ontario.

Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Darwin D. Martin House is one of the must-see attractions in Buffalo. Located in a lovely residential area on the edge of Delaware Park , this house is considered one of Wright's finest prairie houses and one of his greatest accomplishments from the first half of his career.

The complex, which includes six interconnected buildings, was designed and built between 1903 and 1905. Today, it is a National Historic Landmark. Some of the complex was demolished, but over the past two decades extensive restoration and reconstruction has brought the property back to life, and the efforts are still ongoing.

All visitors are required to tour the house in a group lead by a knowledgeable docent.

Canalside is a revitalized area of downtown Buffalo running along the canal, where locals and tourists can come to enjoy some green space, relax, and take in some occasional entertainment.

The area, the former terminus of the 1825 Erie Canada, includes a lovely park, with Adirondack chairs and benches looking out over the canal, and a walkway along the water's edge. In summer, a number of events are held here, and the schedule is posted in advance online, so you can see what's coming. Each winter, a huge outdoor skating rink is built nearby.

Along one side of this area is Harborcenter, with shops and a few restaurants, and in behind is the KeyBank Center hockey arena. If you are arriving by boat, you can dock at Canalside on a first-come, first-served basis.

Olmsted's 155-acre South Park, created in the late 1800s, is home to more than 2,000 plants and trees. Within the park is the 1894 Victorian-style, tri-domed glass conservatory building, originally opened for the 1900 Pan American Exposition, which is the centerpiece of the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens. The unique glass, wood, and steel design was based on the famous Crystal Palace and Kew Gardens Palm House in England.

The indoor gardens include a fully restored palm dome and an impressive fern house. Year-round highlights include the orchid house, bromeliad house, herb collection, and waterfall. Some of the plants are native to the area, but most are native to tropical and subtropical regions of the world.

Fans of cars and various forms of transport will enjoy a visit to the unique and somewhat eclectic Pierce-Arrow Museum. The museum is named after the original Pierce-Arrow motorcar company that at one time had its manufacturing facility in Buffalo.

Inside you'll find a wide variety of cars, all shining beautifully under spotlights, along with motorcycles, trucks, traditional bicycles, and even a Jello wagon.

A highlight of any visit here is the Frank-Lloyd-Wright-designed gas station, dating from 1927. The station was never built by the famous architect, but the museum obtained the plans and built it from the ground up.

Forest Lawn, founded in 1849, is a large and scenic cemetery, covering 250 acres. The area feels more like a park and is visually stunning, with mature trees, water features, and walking paths. In the fall, the cemetery is particularly beautiful. This is also the final resting place of many famous people. Noteworthy sites include the Blocher Memorial and the President Fillmore grave site.

Plan an afternoon stroll here in the fall, when the large hardwood trees burst into a wonderful display of orange, red, and yellow.

Along the canal in downtown Buffalo, beside the revitalized Canalside area, Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park is home to guided missile cruiser USS Little Rock (CLG-4), destroyer USS The Sullivans (DD-537), and submarine USS Croaker (SSK-246).

You can experience how mariners and submariners lived and carried out their patriotic duties. In addition to the ships, the museum also displays aircraft, a variety of models, and other artifacts.

One particularly interesting exhibit is the Maritime Simulator. In this hands-on exhibit, you'll get to feel what it's like to be at the helm of a massive ship.

In Delaware Park, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery is housed in an impressive Greek Revival building and features a strong collection of modern and contemporary art. Post-war American and European art is especially notable, with such names as Gorky, Pollock, Warhol, and Johns.

Also of note are works by 19th-century Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, including Renoir, van Gogh, Degas, and Monet. Other movements represented here are Cubism, Surrealism, Constructivism, and the collection includes works by artists such as Picasso, Matisse, and O'Keeffe to name just a few.

Delaware Park is an incredible asset to the city of Buffalo, with wide open green spaces, tree-lined walking and jogging paths, and tennis and golf opportunities.

One of the main highlights in the park is the Buffalo Zoo. The zoo features a wide variety of animals from around the globe, including a gorilla troop, Indian rhinoceros, polar bears, tigers, and a whole host of other animals.

The Delta Sonic Heritage Farm is a recreated 1850s farm with heritage breeds, where you can touch animals. The facility also maintains a solid collection of reptiles and amphibians.

With both indoor and outdoor displays, more than 1,000 animals can be seen in their natural habitats. If you are just passing by, you may even be able to see giraffes from the Parkside Avenue sidewalk, outside the park.

Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site is the spot where Theodore Roosevelt took the oath of office on September 14, 1901. The museum features displays related to the history of this important moment in time. Inside are fascinating exhibits and interactive displays, along with the Issues Theater.

You can visit the museum only on a guided tour, and reservations in advance are recommended.

The site is at the north end of downtown and easily accessible a couple of blocks off the Buffalo Metro Rail.

This Buffalo landmark is a top cultural spot in the city and contains the world's largest collection of the works of Charles E. Burchfield. In addition to his works, you'll also find an impressive collection of artwork from the Buffalo/Niagara region.

Artwork in various mediums is spread out across 16 galleries. One of the highlights includes the Charles Cary Rumsey Gallery showcasing 3D works of art.

The Burchfield Penney Art Center is located in Buffalo's museum district near the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.

Although a trip to Buffalo City Hall may not be on most people's list of things to do in Buffalo, it really should be. This exceptional example of Art Deco architecture is a must-see for fans of historic buildings. Built in 1932, the building is a proud testament to the wealth and power that Buffalo had at that point in history.

One of the best things to do when visiting Buffalo City Hall is to visit the observation deck. Located on the 25th floor at the top of three flights of stairs, this perch in the sky offers incredible views out over the city, the lake, and the surrounding countryside.

While visiting the building and on your way to the elevators, be sure to check out the impressive murals on the walls. Near the building are statues of several American presidents, including a very large one devoted to William McKinley.

Shea's Performing Arts Center is considered a fine example of the great movie palaces of its era. The center was built in 1926 in the Classic style with a Neo-Spanish Baroque interior. The ornate chandeliers and a marble-lined grand lobby are some of the notable features.

Cornelius and George Rapp designed the Shea Theater. The building is listed as a National Historic Landmark, and tours of the grand facility are open to the public by appointment only. Some of the great performers that have taken to the stage here include Frank Sinatra, the Marx Brothers, and George Burns.

Buffalo is surprisingly well positioned to ensure easy access to some of New York's best ski resorts . Just a short drive away in the cute town of Ellicottville is the wonderful Holiday Valley Ski Resort . Boasting an excellent assortment of green, blue, and black diamond level runs, the ski hill is an excellent family ski destination. Holiday Valley has recently installed new lift infrastructure, making the trip to the top even faster.

Just under two hours east of Buffalo is Bristol Mountain , noted for its impressive vertical, the highest point between the Adirondacks and the Rocky Mountains. A bit closer is Swain Ski Hill , only 1.5 hours away to the southeast, this old school resort is fun and funky. Near Erie is Peek n Peak, a hot spot for snowboarders with its five terrain parks.

Located in downtown Buffalo, this Gothic-Revival-style cathedral was built in the mid-1800s at the direction of Bishop John Timon, the first bishop of Buffalo. Over the years, this religious institution has played a key role in the community.

The cathedral is home to a Hook and Hastings Organ, which found residence here in 1877. If you are interested in architecture, it's worth stopping by to see the interior of this lovely building, with its spectacular stained-glass windows along both sides and the large rose, also known as a wheel window, located high above the altar.

Sahlen Field, is home to the Buffalo Bisons minor league baseball team. Built in 1988, the baseball stadium is one of the largest in the minor league, with a maximum capacity of 19,500. Sahlen Field is located in the heart of downtown and is easily accessible via Metro Rail; just get off at the Erie Canal Harbor stop.

The Liberty Building in downtown Buffalo was built in 1925 and designed by Alfred Bossom. The Neoclassical office tower was the largest of its kind in Buffalo when it was built and is still a standout building today.

The building is especially noted for the two huge statues on the rooftop, both based on the Statue of Liberty. Each statue stands an impressive 36 feet high.

The Liberty Building is 23 stories tall and owned by the Main Place Liberty Group; it is located near Lafayette Square.

• Budget Hotels : Budget hotels are hard to come by in Buffalo's city center. Good options can be found a short distance outside of downtown. The Econo Lodge South offers decent rooms and reasonable prices and is about a 10- or 15-minute drive from downtown. A little pricier, but with a good location in downtown is the BEST WESTERN - On The Avenue , offering free breakfast and parking.
