Epic science-fiction stories, with their cosmic themes and fast truths about the nature of mankind, somehow work best when the actors are unknown to us. The presence of the Star Trek characters and actors who have become so familiar to us on television tends in a strange way to undermine this movie. The audience walks in with a possessive, even patronizing attitude toward Kirk and Spock and Bones, and that interferes with the creation of the "sense of wonder" that science fiction is all about.
Let's begin with the toy for the eyes. The Star Trek movie is fairly predictable in its plot. We more or less expected that two of the frequent ingredients in the television episodes would be here, and they are: a confrontation between Starship Enterprise and some sort of alien entity, and a conclusion in which basic human values are affirmed in a hostile universe. In "Star Trek: The Motion Picture", the alien entity is an unimaginably vast alien spaceship from somewhere out at the edge of the galaxy. The movie opens as it's discovered racing directly toward Earth, and it seems to be hostile. Where has it come from, and what does it want?
The Starship Enterprise, elaborately rebuilt, is assigned to go out to intercept it, with Admiral Kirk, of course, in charge. And scenes dealing with the Enterprise and the other ship will make up most of the movie if the special effects aren't good, the movie's not going to work. But they are good, as, indeed, they should be: The first special-effects team on this movie was fired, and the film's release was delayed a year while these new effects were devised and photographed. (The effects get better, by the way, as the movie progresses. The alien ship looks great but the spaceports and futuristic cities near the film's beginning loom fairly phony.)
The Enterprise, perhaps deliberately, looks a lot like other spaceships we've seen in " 2001: A Space Odyssey ," " Silent Running ," "Star Wars," and " Alien ." Kubrick's space odyssey set a visual style for the genre that still seems to be serviceable. But the look of the other spaceship in " Star Trek " is more awesome and original. It seems to reach indefinitely in all directions, the Enterprise is a mere speck inside of it, and the contents of the alien vessel include images of the stars and planets it has passed en route, as well as enormous rooms or spaces that seem to be states of a computer-mind. This is terrific stuff.
But now we get to the human level (or the half-human level, in the case of Mr. Spock). The characters in this movie are part of our cultural folklore; the Star Trek television episodes have been rerun time and time again. Trekkies may be unhappy with me for saying this, but there are ways in which our familiarity with the series works against the effectiveness of this movie. On the one hand we have incomprehensible alien forces and a plot that reaches out to the edge of the galaxy.
On the other hand, confronting these vast forces, we have television pop heroes. It's great to enjoy the in-jokes involving the relationships of the Enterprise crew members and it's great that Trekkies can pick up references meant for them, but the extreme familiarity of the Star Trek characters somehow tends to break the illusion in the big scenes involving the alien ship.
Such reservations aside, "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" is probably about as good as we could have expected. It lacks the dazzling brilliance and originality of 2001 (which was an extraordinary one-of-a-kind film). But on its own terms it's a very well-made piece of work, with an interesting premise. The alien spaceship turns out to come from a mechanical or computer civilization, one produced by artificial intelligence and yet poignantly "human" in the sense that it has come all this way to seek out the secrets of its own origins, as we might.
There is, I suspect, a sense in which you can be too sophisticated for your own good when you see a movie like this. Some of the early reviews seemed pretty blase, as if the critics didn't allow themselves to relish the film before racing out to pigeonhole it. My inclination, as I slid down in my seat and the stereo sound surrounded me, was to relax and let the movie give me a good time. I did and it did.

Sinopsis [ ]

Avoided this for years because people said it was boring. And, like, sure. It's less exciting than a DS9 two parter. But most likely so are you. And I seriously doubt you ever gave the world a freaky proto-Borg villain who speaks like her voice is coming out of a wii-mote or DeForest Kelley dressed like the inventor of cocaine. So maybe shut the fuck up and have some respect.
Review by SilentDawn ★★★★½ 12
Methodically pure sci-fi; a world with icons instead of characters and vast emptiness in place of pop western operatics. "The Motion Picture" takes inspiration from classical cinema - an overture greeted me when I clicked 'play' and I was sold from then on - and the inherent fascination of movement; people, places, technology, and all the imprints they leave. Robert Wise, a master filmmaker who utilized dance ( West Side Story ), physical fright (A frantic, insane Eleanor in The Haunting ), and an absence of movement for cinematic means (the alien visitor in The Day The Earth Stood Still is scary because he hardly moves), is in love not only with Star Trek, but with the movies and their romantic allure.…
Review by matt lynch ★★★½ 2
When you get down to brass tacks, this still has about 40 minutes smack in the middle that are just a bunch of people in awful, awful beige jumpsuits watching a big television. Even in 1979 you'd have to wonder who thought this would make for an exciting adventure, but certainly by today's standards it's so anomalously slow and pensive and thoughtful (not to mention the incredible miniature effects), and I just can't help but kind of love it. The spacedock flyby of the refitted Enterprise lasts almost six minutes ! Unheard of now, and in fact I can't safely say that if such a thing were to occur in a modern studio event feature like this that I wouldn't be bitching about it being excruciatingly boring. But there you have it. Add it to the list of largely disliked movies I really have a soft spot for just because they are weird.
Review by Will Sloan 1
Never saw more than a few minutes of this because of its reputation for being boring, but having now finally watched the whole thing... I'm sorry, we're all thinking of the same "Star Trek," right? Is this not basically an episode of the show you all like, but with cool 2001: A Space Odyssey -style special effects? Yeah, it's talky and maybe a little slow. Of course it is. You can't take a Star Trek that's talky and a little slow? The theatre marked "Star Wars" is just down the hall, you animals, you savages. Go have fun with that, you absolute children.

the biggest blank check in Trek movie history and that is why I love it so
Review by Jamelle Bouie ★★★ 4
yes, it’s incredibly slow, there’s barely a plot and what little there is rests on your familiarity with the characters. but this is a beautiful movie to look at and i think that if you can vibe with its mood then you’re in for a treat. best enjoyed with substances.

It should actually be called, Star Trek: The Slow-Motion Picture.
Review by Ian West ★★★★★ 12
Slow and methodical but I dig that... It’s like an extended Original Series episode that opens the floodgates to the vastness of the universe guided by that all timer Jerry Goldsmith score, fantastic visuals, and interesting takes on enlightenment, inner peace, and finding oneself.
The human condition.
I started watching STAR TREK with my dad via network syndication during the early 90’s, he’d get home late and always miss the intro stinger and he’d ask me to tell him what happened even though he already knew, he just wanted to hear me emphaticly talk about it with that childlike wonder. That show and the first six movies mean so damn much to me it would be hard to even attempt to put to…
Review by Sean Fennessey ★★★½ 4
Deathly serious movie about an intergalactic destructive cloud that features long stretches of people politely speaking in Naval command instructions on a flight deck. Almost entirely action-free and unusually philosophical about the nature of existence, even by Trekkian standards. WRATH OF KHAN is the standard-bearer in my mind, but this has a methodical, almost religious approach that is shocking for such a high-budgeted post-STAR WARS science fiction feature. You can feel the weight of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND on it. The big reveal, when the crew discovers what “V’ger” stands for, is downright hilarious. But the conclusion foretells the same A.I. anxiety that animated a lot of Kubrick’s work. The production design and tech has aged poorly, but the intent never expires.
Review by Mr. DuLac ★★★ 10
It's life, Captain, but not life as we know it. -Spock
That quote could be changed to " It's Star Trek, Captain, but not Star Trek as we know it ." This bloated mess of a film seems to take it's visual queues from films like 2001: A Space Odyssey instead of the television series it's based on. As a result the 90 minute story is ballooned to a 132 minute running time with most of the filler being that of a film that seems to be in awe of it's own visual effects.
The visuals are impressive however, but scenes like the introduction of the new Enterprise and later on it's passage within the space cloud are both pacing nightmares. While…

- 'Star Trek: Enterprise' (2151-2155)
- 'Star Trek: Discovery ' T1-T2 (2256-2258)
- ' Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' (circa 2258 - ...)
- 'Star Trek' TOS (2266-2269)
- 'Star Trek: La serie animada' (2269-2270)
- ' Star Trek: La película ' (2273)
- ' Star Trek II: La ira de Khan ' (2285)
- ' Star Trek III: en busca de Spock ' (2285)
- ' Star Trek IV: Misión: Salvar la Tierra ' (2286 y 1986)
- ' Star Trek V: La última frontera ' (2287)
- ' Star Trek VI: Aquel país desconocido ' (2293)
- ' Star Trek: La nueva generación ' (2364-2370)
- ' Star Trek: La próxima generación ' (2371 y 2293)
- 'Star Trek: Espacio profundo 9' (2369-2375)
- 'Star Trek: Voyager' (2371-2378)
- ' Star Trek: Primer Contacto ' (2373)
- ' Star Trek: Insurrección ' (2375)
- ' Star Trek: Némesis ' (2379)
- ' Star Trek: Lower Decks ' (2380)
- 'Star Trek: Prodigy' (2383)
- ' Star Trek: Picard ' (2399-2401)
- ' Star Trek: Discovery' T3-4 (3188-...)
