Ta'if (pronounced "Taayef", also written as "Taif") is a city in the Mecca province of Saudi Arabia . With a population of 690,000 people (2020 estimate), it is the sixth most populous city in Saudi Arabia.

The city is at an elevation of 1,879 m (6,165 ft) and is therefore much cooler than any of the nearby larger cities: Mecca , Medina and Jeddah . Ta'if is a popular tourist destination both among Saudis and among the fairly large expatriate community in Jeddah. The nearby upmarket resort town of Al Hada is another popular destination.

Understand [ edit ]

Ta'if literally means 'circulated' or 'encircled' in Arabic . It is said that the name of the city comes from a wall that was built around the city in pre-Islamic times . Certainly the city existed in those times, before the 7th century CE.

There's no direct mention of Ta'if in the Qu'ran, but Sura 43:31 mentions two cities which scholars believe were Mecca and Ta'if. Ta'if does play a role in other Islamic writings. After Khadija, Muhammad's first wife. died in 619 CE, he made his way to Ta'if and tried to spread Islam in the city, but was rudely rejected by the city's chiefs, was pelted with rocks and stones, and was chased out of the city. Bloodied and seriously wounded, he was taken in by a gardener who nursed him back to health. After recovering, Muhammad realised he could no longer enter Mecca because his uncle, Abu Thalib, was no longer there to protect him.

In the years to follow, various battles left the city completely isolated and eventually, the inhabitants of the city were peacefully converted to Islam.

The Ottoman Empire dominated the city for several hundred years until World War I when the Hashemites (the family who traditionally ruled Mecca) led an Arab revolt against them.

In the 1920s, Ta'if was incorporated into Saudi Arabia by the ibn Saud family after a short battle. This was part of the process of founding modern-day Saudi Arabia. At the time Ta'if was a relatively small, unknown city. In the years to follow, the Saudi government has rapidly developed the city, and it is now a popular tourist destination among the Saudis.

In the 1930s, a treaty that established the boundary lines between Saudi Arabia and Yemen was signed here.

By car [ edit ]

Given Ta'if's highly mountainous geography, almost no highways pass through the city. The only exception is Highway 15 , which connects Ta'if to Mecca. Approaching Ta'if, the scenery along it is breathtaking.

taif travel guide

  • If you're in Mecca and plan on driving to Ta'if, just go along Highway 15. You'll reach Ta'if in less than an hour.

Most people drive to Ta'if from Jeddah .

  • One route is Highway 40 to Mecca, then Highway 15. The journey should take you two hours or a bit more depending on traffic conditions; expect Highway 40 to be completely jammed and packed during the Hajj . Bear in mind that this path will take through Mecca and under Saudi law, non-Muslims are not permitted to enter Mecca.
  • The usual route from Jeddah for non-Muslims starts along highway 40. A few miles outside of Mecca, there is a cutoff referred to as the "Christian bypass", route 298. It is well marked and a police checkpoint to turn non-Muslims away from the holy city is visible a bit beyond it. Turn along this highway to connect to Highway 15 and reach Taif . Time on this route might be about three hours.

By plane [ edit ]

If you're not into long road trips, another convenient way to enter the city is by plane. If flying from Jeddah , you'll easily reach the city in less than 45 minutes. If coming from Riyadh , you'll reach the city in less than 90 minutes.

By train [ edit ]

As of January 2022 Taif is not served by any railway networks. There is a plan to introduce a railway network in the city in the near future.

By bus [ edit ]

The Saudi Arabian Public Transport Company (SAPTCO) offers bus services to and from the city. A bus ride from Jeddah to Taif would normally take you three hours depending on traffic conditions. There are no VIP trips to the city, however.

There are many ways in which you can book a bus ride to Taif. You can do it at a SAPTCO branch, on the SAPTCO app ( iOS , Android ), or on the website. The bus fare can be between 50 - 200 SAR, but may change depending on a variety of factors. The SAPTCO app is only in Arabic .

  • 21.293633 40.424978 2 SAPTCO Station ( ابتكو محطة حافلات الطائف ), Al Faisaliyyah , ☏ +966 12736 9664 , [email protected] . SAPTCO station in Ta'if. You can use it to go to your next destination in Saudi Arabia . ( updated Jan 2022 )

Due to the city's mountainous geography, the best way to get around the city quickly is by car. With an area of 800km², it should take you a couple of hours to cover the whole city.

By foot [ edit ]

If you are in the main city center, a lot of attractions are within walking distance. Since the climate is not too extreme, Ta'if provides a good outlet for long-distance walks, especially during the summers.

See [ edit ]

The Yemeni corner in Masjid Al-Haram in Mecca is scented with Al Gadhi rose oil. $430 (1,600 SAR) for a 12-gram bottle . ( updated Jan 2022 )

Ta'if is sometimes referred to as the "City of Roses" ( Arabic :مدينة الورود). The rose oil produced in Ta'if is of top quality; even luxury brands such as Givenchy and Jimmy Choo commonly use it to make their perfumes. Some of the many perfume vendors in the Cairo bazaar will claim their oil comes from Ta'if, but such claims are often dubious.

Shiraz in Iran is also sometimes called the "City of Roses" and also has many gorgeous blossoms in season. However it does not rival Ta'if as a center of rose oil production.

Dams [ edit ]

Ta'if is home to numerous dams, mostly because of the fact that the city is home to many wadis (valleys).

Perched up on the highlands of Saudi Arabia’s Mecca province, just east of the iconic holy city of the same name, Taif has long enjoyed one of the country’s most hospitable summer climates. Once the powerhouse of the country’s mountain tribes, the city passed hands throughout the medieval period, before being cultivated more recently as a de facto seasonal capital, where Saudi’s royals could go to escape the scorching heat of the lowlands. Since its earliest beginnings, the city of Taif has been famed for its wealth of fertile agricultural land, and today the undulating fields of wheat, sprawling rows of fruit orchards and verdant valleys of wild flowers can be spied out encompassing the centre in the surrounding districts of Al Shafa and Al Hada. For the best views of the vistas around town though, most Taif tourist guides will recommend the newly-opened cable car (the largest in all of the Middle East), which takes guests to the Al Kar Tourist Village above town. For a taste of local life, head to the old town district in the centre. Here, clusters of traditional eateries serve up Saudi fare, while lively little roadways wind their way pleasantly beneath the peaks.

Taif Tourism: A Breath of Fresh Air in the Arabian Highlands

Taif (or Tayif) is renowned as the City of Roses because of the number of fragrant rose flowers that thrive in the region's many valleys and hillsides. Taif is renowned as 'Saudi Arabia's Summer Capital' because many people visit during summer to escape the country's sweltering desert heat. It is a breathtaking metropolis with majestic mountains, abundant greenery, and centuries-old markets.

It's not just Taif that's intriguing; the voyage there is also. The twisty mountain route to Taif is an experience in and of itself. A picturesque serpentine route runs through the mountains from the center of Makkah to the plateau of Taif, passing by fruit shops, rose plantations, and deep gorges along the way. It's near the Shafa Mountains, where baboons roam free and the sunbeams on gorgeous peaks.

Taif is also known as the 'friend of the clouds' because of its mild temperature and its location on the eastern slope of the Sarawat Mountains, approximately 1,700 meters above sea level. The lighting effects of the city's many cafes and hotels on its summits make the city's towering mountains appear like an ancient metropolis at night from above.

Traveling Tips to Taif: Your Travel Guide to Year-Round Tourism

Taif is a city of natural beauty, rich culture, and historical significance. Before embarking on your journey to Taif, be sure to grab a Taif travel guide to discover the region's stunning landscapes and cultural treasures. To ensure a hassle-free and enjoyable trip, here are some essential tips and information you should keep in mind:

  • Best Time to Visit: The ideal time to explore Taif is during the mild and pleasant months of spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these seasons, temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C, making outdoor activities and sightseeing comfortable.
  • Dress Code: Saudi Arabia has a conservative dress code for both public places and religious sites. For women, this typically means covering their hair and wearing loose-fitting clothing that covers the arms and legs. For men, long pants and shirts with sleeves are considered appropriate.
  • Cultural Etiquette: When meeting someone, particularly of the opposite gender, a simple nod or handshake is usually appropriate. During prayer times, try to avoid engaging in loud or disruptive activities. Displays of affection in public are considered inappropriate in Saudi Arabia, so refrain from such actions in public.
  • Passport and Visa requirements: Most travelers to Saudi Arabia, including Taif, require a tourist visa. Requirements and procedures can change, so check with the Saudi embassy or consulate for the most up-to-date information. Make sure that your passport is valid for a minimum of six months beyond your planned departure date.
  • Health Tips: Make sure you are up to date with routine vaccinations and consult with a healthcare professional for any additional vaccines or health precautions recommended for Saudi Arabia. Due to the hot climate, it's essential to stay well-hydrated, especially during the summer months.
  • Safety Tips: Save local emergency numbers, such as those for medical assistance (997) and the police (999), in your phone for quick access in case of any emergencies.

Shopping in Taif: A Shopper's Paradise

Taif tourism offers a diverse shopping experience, from modern malls to traditional souks, making it a paradise for those seeking unique items and souvenirs. Here's your guide to shopping in Taif:

  • Famous Malls: These upscale shopping centers are a go-to destination for fashion enthusiasts. These feature international and local brands, restaurants, and entertainment options, making it a one-stop-shop for visitors. Some of the malls are Jouri Mall , Akamal Mall , and Taif Heart Mall.
  • Traditional Souqs: Dive into the rich culture of Taif at the souks, where you can find traditional Arabian goods, spices, perfumes, and handicrafts. The bustling atmosphere of these souqs adds to the charm of this historic market. Some of them are Souq Okaz , Souq Albalad , and Gulf markets .
  • Tax-Free Shopping: Saudi Arabia introduced a Value Added Tax (VAT) in recent years, which is applicable to most goods and services. However, some areas, like the 'tax-free zones,' offer a VAT exemption to promote Taif tourism. Be sure to inquire about tax-free shopping options at the malls or shops in these zones, as they can provide you with a refund for the VAT paid on your purchases.
  • Unique Souvenirs: Taif is renowned for its roses. Look for rosewater, rose oil, and rose-scented perfumes. The Taif Rose is a symbol of the city and makes for a fragrant and meaningful souvenir. Other souvenirs include Traditional Arabian Carpets, Frankincense, Oud, Spices, and Arabic Coffee.

Tales from Taif Nightlife: Where Adventure Begins After Sunset

Taif's nightlife is a stunning reflection of the city's unique charm and the warmth of its people. So, when you're visiting Taif for tourism, make sure to explore its nightlife scene to add an extra layer of memories to your trip.

  • Rooftop Lounges and Cafes: Taif boasts a number of charming rooftop lounges and cafes, offering a perfect blend of relaxation and stunning views of the city. Soul Lounge is a rooftop lounge that offers a relaxed atmosphere and stunning views of Taif. Other lounges like Nights of Taif Cafe and Love Lounge offer shisha and an incredible ambiance. Sip on Arabian coffee or indulge in a variety of traditional and international beverages while taking in the city's cool mountain air.
  • Cultural Shows and Entertainment: You can often find cultural shows and entertainment events that showcase traditional Saudi music, dance, and folklore in this city. A popular venue for events and live music performances, Al-Thagher Ballroom often hosts cultural shows and entertainment.

Currency in Taif: Practical Tips for Travelers

When visiting Taif for tourism, it's essential to have a good understanding of the local currency, where to exchange money, and the available payment options. Saudi Arabia's official currency is the Saudi Riyal (SAR). It is abbreviated as 'ر.س' and is often represented by the symbol 'SR.' When traveling to Taif for tourism, it's recommended to carry both cards and cash, ensuring you have some Riyals on hand for smaller expenses and emergencies. Taif's Rich History: Paving the Way for Modern Taif Tourism

Taif, a city perched in the mountains of western Saudi Arabia, boasts a vibrant history that has left an indelible mark on its identity as a burgeoning tourism destination. It's believed to have been inhabited for over 2,500 years, with mentions in ancient texts like the Quran. The city was once a thriving trade hub due to its strategic location along important caravan routes.

Taif has witnessed the rise and fall of empires. It was conquered by various powers, including the Romans, Ottomans, and Byzantines. With the advent of Islam in the 7th century, Taif embraced the new faith and became an essential part of the Muslim world. It's renowned for the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, a pivotal agreement between the Prophet Muhammad and the Quraysh tribe, which took place near Taif. In 1924, it was here that King Abdulaziz (Ibn Saud) captured the city, bringing it under the umbrella of the newly formed Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The historical tapestry of Taif has set the stage for the city's modern tourism industry. It's a place where the past and present coexist, inviting travelers to experience its unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. As Taif continues to grow as a tourism hotspot, it remains firmly rooted in its storied past.

Language in Taif: Bridging Cultures in the Heart of Taif Tourism

The official language of Taif, and indeed the entire Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is Arabic. While many people in the tourism industry may speak English to some, embracing the local language, even in small ways, enhances your Taif tourism experience and fosters cultural exchange.

  • Basic Phrases: Familiarize yourself with common Arabic greetings such as 'As-salaam alaykum' (Hello) and 'Shukran' (Thank you). Even a few polite words can offer a good experience and show respect for the local culture.
  • Use Translation Apps: Modern translation apps are incredibly helpful for bridging language gaps. Apps like Google Translate can be invaluable for translating text and even spoken language in real time.
  • Be Patient and Polite: If there's a language barrier, remain patient and maintain a polite demeanor. Locals are often appreciative of visitors who show respect and understanding.

Religion in Taif: Embracing Faith and Culture in Taif Tourism

Religion plays a central role in the life and culture of Taif, Saudi Arabia. Visitors to this vibrant city will encounter a deep and abiding respect for religious traditions. As in the rest of Saudi Arabia, Islam is the predominant and official religion in Taif. The city is known for its strong Islamic heritage and conservative Islamic practices. The call to prayer, known as the Adhan, echoes throughout the city five times a day, serving as a reminder of the importance of daily prayer for Muslims.

Taif boasts several beautiful and historic mosques, such as the Al-Qantara Mosque and the Al-Tarfiyah Mosque. You are welcome to admire the stunning architecture and witness the peaceful atmosphere of these places. While not a place of worship, Shubra Palace is an important cultural site that reflects the region's history.

Welcome to Taif

Lying just east of the holy city of Mecca in the west of the country, Ta’if is Saudi Arabia’s summer capital . It’s also the seasonal residence of Saudi Arabia’s royalty thanks to its gentle climate, peaceful atmosphere and beautiful views.

Ta’if is also famous for its roses, grapes, figs, honey and other crops which flourish on its green slopes.

Top things to see and do in Taif

  • The impressive Shubra Palace is a historic building that contains a cultural centre, a museum, and a library. It’s also the former residence of King Abdul Aziz, and a must-see for anyone visiting Ta’if.

Travel Guide Middle East Saudi Arabia Taif

Introduction

Ta'if (pronounced "Taayef", also written Taif) is a city in western Saudi Arabia . It is in the mountains near Mecca and was once used as the summer capital, letting the royal family get out of the much hotter Riyadh.

Sights and Activities

Al Rudaf Park , south of Taif, has clumps of trees lie and beautiful weathered granite rocks, plus a small zoo. Wadi Mitna was Muhammad's refuge in 619 AD. Ta'if rose plantation . In April, fields are full of pink roses. They are harvested and distilled into Ta'if rose oil, a luxury item which has been used in famous perfumes including Chanel. Shubra Palace houses the local museum. Rock Carving Site , 40 km north of Taif, is where there used to be a large souq (market) in ancient, pre-Islamic times. Turkish Fort : This is near the Rock Carving Site, and it is believe that Lawrence of Arabia fought here during World War I. Many other battles have taken place in the area, so there are graves of war dead nearby. Nature Reserve : This reserve is 2,100 meters above sea level, at the peak of Al Hada Mountain. This is a novelty in Saudi Arabia: A place of greenery, trees and shrubs, and also a great place to watch the sun set. Al Shafa : A village in the mountains (2,200 to 2,500 metres above sea level), where many fruits are grown. Great views are to be had.

Located beside the Ramada Hotel, the newly opened cable car, which is the largest in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East, will show you the extremely fantastic scenery of Taif's Mountains. If you are lucky you will be able to see monkeys. These cable cars, located in Al Hada Region will cost you a notable amount of money. The cable cars drop you in Al Kar Tourist Village, which is mainly a water games center with swimming pools. The cable car will cost you 30 Riyals for an adult and 15 Riyals for kids. If you wish to take a return trip, you will pay double. You can have your own cable car for 150 Riyals one way and 300 Riyals for two way. Don't Forget Your Camera! Since 2011 the price is 90 Riyals flat, this includes to and fro cable car and waterpark.

Events and Festivals

Milad al-nabi.

All Saudi Muslims celebrate the birthday of their Prophet, Mohammad, by elaborately decorating their homes and mosques. Children recite poems about the Prophet, while older Saudis tell stories about Mohammad’s life and accomplishments. Large feasts and street processions are among Milad al-Nabi’s other traditional activities. The date of Milad al-Nabi varies from year to year according to the Islamic calendar.

Unification of the Kingdom Day

The country’s only secular public holiday takes place each September 23 on the anniversary of Saudi Arabia’s 1932 founding. Although many Saudis still choose to quietly celebrate this formerly low-key holiday at home, growing numbers of young Saudis have chosen to express their national pride more overtly by singing, dancing, honking car horns, and waving Saudi flags.

Eid ul-Fitr

Like their Muslim counterparts in other nations, Saudis mark the final day of the fasting month of Ramadan with this three-day religious festival. Eid ul-Fitr begins with a small morning meal and quiet prayers, and continues with larger feasts and livelier celebrations among family and friends. Saudi children receive money and elaborately decorated gift bags from adults, several shopkeepers add free gifts to all purchases, and Saudi men secretly leave large bags of food on strangers’ doorsteps during this festive time of year.

Eid al-Adha

This important Muslim festival lasts four days and marks the moment when Ibrahim was willing to sacrifice Ismael, his son, for Allah. Today, most Saudi families celebrate Eid al-Adha by dressing up in their finest clothing, saying special prayers, and slaughtering lambs to share their meat with everyone.

Getting There

From Jeddah, take the highway toward Mecca and turn off onto the "Christian Bypass" just before the holy city. This leads to an interesting road of switchbacks up an escarpment and on to Ta'if.

Ta’if Regional Airport (TIF IATA) is located some 15-20km north-east of the city. Domestic flights are available to Abha, Dammam, Jazan, Jeddah, Medina, Nejran, Riyadh and Tabuk on Saudi. Flights to Cairo are available on Nile Air and Nesma Airlines, while Nile Air also offer flights to Alexandria.

Try to eat Saudi's own Kabsa or Bukhari Rice. The signature dish of Taif is "Seleeg," a sort of large-grain rice and milk pudding. However, be careful because hygiene in some restaurants is not satisfactory. Don't miss The Tazaj fast food chain.

As with the rest of Saudi Arabia, alcohol is strictly prohibited. You can drink Saudi champagne (alcohol free) from any coffee shop.

Intercontinental Taif

View our map of accommodation in Taif

Keep Connected

Internet cafes abound in major Saudi cities, and many shopping malls feature a gaming parlor or two. Rates are around SR5/hour.

While Internet in Saudi Arabia is cordoned off by a filter, it aims primarily at pornography, non-Islamic religious and domestic political sites in Arabic, and (from the traveller's point of view) is nowhere near as strict as, say, China's. Google, Skype, Wikipedia, all major webmail providers etc. are all accessible.

See also International Telephone Calls

The three mobile operators in Saudi, incumbent Al Jawal, Emirati rival Mobily and Kuwaiti newcomer Zain (Vodafone Network) are fiercely competitive, with good coverage (in populated areas) and good pricing. A starter pack with prepaid SIM and talktime starts from about SR 75, and you can sign up in most any larger mobile shop (bring your passport). Local calls are under SR 0.5/minute, while calls overseas are around or less than SR 2/min.

And yes, you can bring in your own phone: despite grumblings from the clerics, both camera phones and multimedia messaging (MMS) are now legal.

Saudi Post has a good network of post offices around the country, but offices are closed Thursday and Friday. Stamps for postcards to anywhere in the world cost SR4. The bigger problem is actually finding postcards, as the mutawwa periodically crack down on the celebration of non-Islamic holidays like Valentine's Day, Christmas or even birthdays, causing all cards of any sort to disappear from bookstores! Your best bet is thus gift shops in major hotels. Mail coming in to the country from overseas is notoriously unreliable. Stories abound of things arriving months after they were sent or never arriving at all. There are branches of DHL, FedEx and UPS operating throughout the kingdom, so a good rule of thumb is to have anything important sent through those channels.
