  • "Had a great day with Martin taking photographs around Queenstown. We were able to visit many places ordinary tour group, or self-tour won't able to find and get to. Martin is great teacher, helped me in composition, using of light even operating my own camera. Specially enjoyed the "local" touch at the lunch spot and visiting around Kingstown." Yue-Roe Wu - 7th February 2023
  • Small group tour was great. Martin was extremely flexible on the schedule as well as sites to see. Very knowledgeable and personable as well We didn’t rent a camera but Martin was very accommodating regarding taking photos at various spot on the tour. We had another couple who almost canceled but we’re very glad they did the tour. Highly recommended Wade G - March 2023
  • Wonderful private photography tour! Thanks to Martin for a great day of photography. With Martin's inside knowledge of the area, we were able to get to some areas well away from crowds and photograph the beautiful varied landscapes around Queenstown. And to learn and practice getting compositions that work. Richard W - November 2022
  • Martin’s expertise in managing a rainy day photo outing, combining cloud, fog and low light to create moody photo landscapes was the highlight for me. I’m so happy to have a collection of lovely New Zealand landscape as a memento of my holiday. Patricia Woods - September 2022
  • Outstanding photography tour Martin made this experience more fun and interesting with his local knowledge and going out of his way to awesome locations for photos. I learned so much I just have to put it into practice now .. Martin is a great tutor and very patient. I highly recommend if you are looking at doing landscape photography or just wanting to go and take some awesome photos this is the man for you. Beth C - August 2022
  • Half Day Photography Tour I had a great afternoon of photography and sightseeing with Martin. Learned a few things and had some laughs along the way. Would definitely recommend this tour if you have a free afternoon in Queenstown. Michelle G - July 2022
  • See NZ Backcountry, and experience amazing photographic opportunities We booked a photo tour of areas that most people wouldn’t go, to capture unique images. We were highly delighted with not only the tour locations but the personalised and engaging explanations of the flora, fauna, local stories and histories en route. Martin, our driver and guide; was excellent tutoring, driving and advising on images. We went off-road into stunning high country which offered excellent picture opportunities, can’t wait to process. Summer was brilliant, would love to return in winter! Highly recommended and would love to repeat with Martin again if back in New Zealand. Simon E  - Feb 2020
  • Amazing afternoon of photography What a wonderful experience! We spent the afternoon traveling to photography locations only a local would know, and got dozens of fantastic pictures that you won't see in the guidebooks or typical tourist spots. Martin was a fantastic teacher and guide, providing great photography tips and historic insight to the locations we visited. It was a wonderful trip and I came away with a month's worth of wonderful images I couldn't have gotten anywhere else. If you love landscape photography you owe it to yourself to book this adventure. As a professional photographer I had a fantastic day with Del, he has a great historical and local knowledge of Skippers, comfortable vehicle prepared for any conditions, and plenty of room. Felt safe with him behind the wheel, and has great patience stopping for the "shot" a little to many times.

Would recommend Del to any other photographers wanting to photograph Skippers Canyon.

TESTIMONIALS

My Del was a fantastic guide with an abundance of local knowledge and skill in navigating our 4WD tour of Skippers Canyon. I would absolutely recommend and go again given the opportunity. A great tour with many chances to take some fantastic photos along the journey!wife and I went on a half day photography tour of Skippers with Del in July 2020. We both had a thoroughly brilliant time. Not only was the tour historically informative, but Del's knowledge of the area meant we stopped at some beautiful points along the road for great photos. It was a real case of local knowledge being a real boon to the trip. Del was great company and his passion for what he does was really evident. We are already planning a longer tour when we next visit Queenstown! This trip is highly recommended for all photographers amateur, hobbyist and professional.

Thomas, Auckland 2020

I had a such an amazing day with Del today for Skippers Canyon & Glenorchy Photography full day tour. It was by far the best outdoor experience I had bar none.

Del was such professional and knowledgeable guide and a superb driver. The fact that his choice of transportation being luxury 4X4 also only added to the already fantastic experience.

Every corner we turned, Del had helpful and interesting stories to make the experience so much more fun. His sense of humour was also top notch, which was great.

While Glenorchy (and drive to get there and more) was beautiful and amazing, Skippers Canyon was just unreal!

Thanks again for such unforgettable memory and experience Del!

Richard, Auckland 2020

What a fantastic experience going up the skippers road canyon with Del, absolutely amazing landscape and Del's your man for very entertaining stories and wealth of knowledge on the history of the area. Lovely comfortable vehicle. By far the best trip we have done in New Zealand. Highly recommended.

Rae Scotland 2019

Del gave us a fantastic tour of Skippers Canyon. He had an amazing amount of knowledge about the area which was really interesting. Del stopped at many scenic sites where we had lots of time for great photos. We would thoroughly recommend this trip especially if you were after a personal touch.

Sandra, NZ 2019

Just an absolutely amazing trip, A private adventure, Del / Tour owner and our guide was brilliant. This is a must do!!! Del has many trips he can offer, we did the skippers canyon half day. Wow, wow, wow

Mike NZ 2019Del was great to deal with right from first contact and we appreciated his guidance in preparing for the day. He is easy to get on with and made sure we had a great day. Our trip meant that we experienced un-seasonal snow in April and we appreciated his expertise, local knowledge of the area and weather conditions.

Thoroughly enjoyed another aspect of the Central Otago landscape and we look forward to being able to join him again in the very near future.

My wife and I recently did the Skipper’s Canyon tour with Del as our driver and guide. Del was fantastic - incredibly knowledgeable and experienced and showed us all the best features and views the canyon has to offer. He was great to have a chat with and share a few laughs - we learned so much along the way. My wife doesn’t normally do too well heights or steep drop offs on a bumpy road, but with Del’s experience on that road, she felt very safe and had the best time. We stopped in one of the most spectacular spots I’ve ever had the pleasure to have a delicious morning tea - supplied by Del (he even did an amazing job catering to our dietary requirements). Before going, I was a little concerned about heading out the same way as we came in, thinking that travelling the same route twice would take away from the experience - I couldn’t be more wrong! It was amazing travelling the same picturesque track with a completely different perspective, this was also enhanced by the different lighting and low lying cloud we experienced on the way in. I couldn’t recommend this tour with Del highly enough, we want to come back and do the same trip again, but in winter with some snow - we also want to see all the other trips Del has to offer. This is a must do!

Highlight of our holiday so far. This time in NZ we wanted to get off the beaten track. Absolutely amazing! So completely different from the Queenstown side of the mountains. We are coming back in June 2020 to do it all again in the snow. Can't wait. Highly recommended. If you want a tour without sharing in a group this is perfect.

If, when you visit New Zealand, Queenstown is a must, then Skippers Canyon is even more of a must - and without the shadow of a doubt the biggest "must" of all when choosing your tour guide is 4WD EXPEDITIONS. Myself (82) and my 76 year old wife were advised by our Kiwi son-in-law not to miss this this experience. How right he was. Time spent on reconnaissance they say is seldom wasted - and ours led us to choose 4WD EXPEDITIONS and Del as our guide. It turned out be be an inspired and rewarding choice. On the dot of 08.00 he arrived at our hotel in a spotless and extremely comfortable Land Rover Discovery. His first task was to reassure my wife, who suffers from vertigo and has a deep seated fear of heights and was on the point of pulling out at the last minute. Reassured by Del that everything would be alright she climbed into the back seat of the Discovery, still not entirely convinced but hoping for the best. What followed was a masterpiece of skilful driving and a fascinating commentary on the geology and history of the area; clearly the result of a genuine interest and much research. The scenery is jaw dropping - the drop-offs even more so but my wife's fears evaporated as she, like myself, was just blown away by the experience. As Del said, no matter how many times you make the trip you could never tire of what Skippers Canyon has to offer. We stopped to admire the views at several memorable spots and highlighted by our mid-morning tea break at what was arguably the most spectacular of the lot; with a view across the valley to what was a goldmining settlement and the beautifully restored local school. In fact "tea break" doesn't to justice to what was on offer. tea, coffee, chocolate, cookies and cakes; a veritable feast. This is most definitely not the usual tour where you are just lumped in as part of a group. Instead you are given a personal tour by a highly professional and skilful guide with a profound knowledge of the area, and delivered with humour. We spent almost two months in New Zealand, visiting both the North and South Islands. Skippers Canyon with Del was unquestionably the highlight. Excellent value for money and not on any account to be missed.

Ian Oxfordshire, 2020

We were a group of four semi-retired professionals aged 55-65 on a 10 week tour of New Zealand and so had already seen lots of impressive and spectacular scenery in both the North and South Islands - but this was a whole new type of scenery and experience. We were collected promptly from our accommodation in a very clean and luxurious white Land Rover Discovery. The trip was tailored to our interests - and we were given a detailed briefing of what it would/could entail. Despite the, at times, winding and narrow track with vertiginious drops, we all felt safe and were confident in Del's control of the vehicle and were aware of the equipment he carried just in case. He was able to stop at some stunning view points to give us details of the local geology and history and knew where to look for specific wildlife, such as the falcons which we were keen to find. Tea and biscuits looking over the valley to a goldmining settlement and school was a nice touch.

The stop by the river where LOTR was filmed, exploring the multicoloured stones and seeing the jet boats go past, just added to the whole experience. Del was also able to offer useful local advice on other activities (e.g. paragliding), shops and restaurants in the area.

Highly recommended and good value for money. Many thanks Del, for a great afternoon out.

Teresa UK 2020

Rosemary, Australia

As this would be our final day in New Zealand, we wanted a day out to remember. 4WD Expeditions delivered just that!

We were picked up from our accommodation in a fantastic comfortable 4x4 and driven by an experienced, confident, friendly driver out to see some of the most beautiful, breathtaking scenery we have seen in New Zealand. Our brilliant driver Del was knowledgable, funny and entertaining through the whole trip. Tea and cake was included in one of the best picnic spots imaginable, and a beautiful Lord of the Rings location visit was the cherry on the delicious cake.

This trip is a definite must for anyone visiting Queenstown, offering something for everyone- exciting 4x4ing on cliffside roads, beautiful scenery and views and a chance to chat and laugh with a friendly New Zealander!

We went on the half-day Skippers tour, and it was amazing. The weather was clear and the mountains had snowy peaks - picture perfect! Del was the perfect guide. He knows all the stories and the history of the canyon and the general area. It’s easy to tell that Del has been doing this for years. He knows his way around and he is an excellent driver. We had the best time!

“I really enjoyed my photography trip with Glen. He was very knowledgeable as well as being an interesting and engaging guy. The conversations were very enjoyable. Naturally enough, the sights were spectacular and I almost felt like a fraud coming away with such good photographs. Glen is the kind of person who is prepared to go the extra distance to ensure you have a memorable trip. On top of this he edited some of my photos a couple of days later, and also shared some of the ones he took on the day, both of which I considered was part of his providing a top-class service.” Frank Gradwell

Queenstown Photography Locations, New Zealand

Be prepared to have your breath taken away by mountain scenery that’s simply inspiring from all angles..

Flying into Queenstown is an experience in itself but the winding roads that venture through sheep filled paddocks, past river rapids and underneath snow-capped peaks are a photographer’s wonderland.

This guide to Queenstown’s best photography locations is based on my experience from three visits in varying seasons. Just as the snow began to gently fall over the autumn coloured forests and harsh rocky mountain tops and twice in the middle of winter.

Here are my picks for the best photography locations in and around Queenstown, New Zealand. I could easily list another 50 but if you’re visiting for a few short days or spending some time skiing on the slopes then these 18 locations will ensure you have a great range of landscape photographs to showcase the magic of real middle earth.

As always, lets begin with a map so you know where you’re heading…

Map: The Best Photography Locations in Queenstown

#1 Wilson Bay

To kick things off I’m listing my favourite spot first, Wilson Bay. A scenic cove nestled on the banks of Lake Wakatipu, it’s an easy pit stop on the road to Glenorchy. Pebbled shores, thick forests, friendly ducks and views across to the rugged landscape of Walter Peak. Without fail I spend a few hours here on each visit because it’s so quiet and calming, the perfect place to set up your camera and click away.

Getting here: Wilson Bay is in the little suburb of Closeburn about a 15minute drive from central Queenstown. There’s a handy car park right on the shore so you can have all your gear within easy reach.

Photo tip: Take cookies for the ducks and get your underwater housing out! I took one of my most spontaneous shots here when two ducks decided they liked my picnic. If you’ve got gum boots it’s also a great place to wade into the water for some split-level landscapes. (Read about the Duck Photo here )

#2 Cecil Peak

The white snow-capped peaks that surround Queenstown are akin to pointy clouds resting effortlessly above Lake Wakatipu. Towering above them all is Cecil Peak, a gracious beauty that you can see from most hotel rooms in the city. Sure it’s great to take photos of it from afar, it’s a completely different story to get up close and land on the edge of a rocky cliff 1700ft above sea level! Jump in a helicopter and ask to be taken to ‘The Ledge’, Cecil Peaks thrill seeking rock platform that juts out and offers a panoramic view across the lake, Queenstown and mountain ranges as far as the eye can see.

Little tip – Get a great view of Cecil Peak when staying at QT Queenstown , Hotel St Moritz (see review here ) or The Waterfront .

Getting here: I flew with Heliworkz NZ, they are based at the Queenstown Airport on Hawthorne Drive in Frankton.

Photo Tip: Firstly watch your step…you are on the edge of a cliff and below you is a 1700ft drop, you don’t want to fall or drop your camera! Be sure to capture panoramics from the edge of ‘The Ledge’ while you have the opportunity, the scene is a once in a lifetime view and a panoramic is one of the few shots that attempts to do it justice.

#3 Coronet Peak – Skippers Road

I’m pretty horrible at skiing so you won’t find me on the slopes of Coronet Peak…however, it’s a great vantage point for photographs! On the drive up the mountain there’s a turn off to Skippers Road and while it’s got a rental car warning sign take the turn. About 20m up the road there’s a little car park for a look out that’s well worth a stop. The rental car warning is for the unpaved road that continues into the canyon or if you’re really worried, simply park in the chain bay and walk 2minutes to the look out. In winter there will be plenty of snow to play in (if you’re a clumsy ski bunny like me), or in the other seasons you’ll find sweeping views across Speargrass Flat towards the Remarkables and Lake Hayes. *Just be weary that some smaller roads may be private driveways so be respectful of this.

Getting here: Take Skippers Road up toward Coronet Peak Ski Station, once you’re close to the top you’ll find the left turn into Skippers Canyon and the look out.

Photo tip: Just like the Crown Range Road, take advantage of the chain bays for pulling over and taking shots. If you’re keen to shoot astro, head up to Coronet Peak at night and watch the stars come out to play!

#4 Bennetts Bluff Lookout

As you travel along the scenic road from Queenstown to Glenorchy you’ll discover loads of vantage points to stop at. None however more beautiful than Bennetts Bluff. Perched up high on a corner, the look out offers views over Lake Wakatipu down to Glenorchy with all the mountain goodness behind. It’s also a great spot to capture shots of the winding road as it disappears into the distance.

Getting here: You’ll come across Bennetts Bluff about 25minutes into the drive from Queenstown. It’s nice and easy to find on Google Maps but there’s only space for about 4 cars at the lookout and it comes up quickly around a blind corner.

Photo tip: The perfect location to capture a shot of the road to Glenorchy as it winds alongside Lake Wakatipu.

#5 Meiklejohns Bay

If you’re into long exposure shots of gently moving water with epic mountain scenery as a backdrop, this is the spot for you. Jotting off the shores of Meiklejohns Bay is the remnants of an old wooden jetty. The wooden posts form a line leading to the mountains so when composed they’re fabulous for adding perspective. Along the shore there’s also a twisted old mangrove tree and a small stream that runs into the lake.

Getting here: There’s no real parking here but when driving from Queenstown, if you reach the Little Paradise Lodge and Tea Garden, you’ve gone too far. You’ll find the old jetty just in front of the lodge on the bend and there’s enough space to pull the car off the road here too.

Photo tip: The water in Lake Wakatipu is super clear so grab yourself a pair of gum boots and get wet for some split-level shots! Also because there’s almost zero light pollution here, head down for some astro shots.

#6 The Remarkables

Visible from almost every corner of Queenstown, this jagged mountain range is a magnet for landscape photographs. In winter, the white coating of snow makes it look like a long block of Toblerone (or maybe I just like chocolate too much…). You can photograph The Remarkables from most lake side areas around Queenstown, get up close and take the drive up to the ski station, from the Crown Range, Coronet Peak or the sky!

Getting here: Depending on where you decide to photograph The Remarkables from there’s lots of ways to get here. My tip, try and capture them from a variety of angles!

Photo tip: This beauty looks different in the changing light so get up nice and early to catch the sun rising behind, then watch as the warm evening glow turns the peaks into orange and red.

* Images below taken with the Olympus E-M1 MKII + 40-150mm f2.8 M.Zuiko Lens

#7 Queenstown Gardens

No visit to Queenstown is complete without a wander around the park. This park is like no other, with centuries old pine trees, rose gardens, a frisbee game that I can’t quite work out and of course, views worthy of a full memory card. There’s a path that leads around the edge of the park with views back toward the town and wharf, then on the other side the views look over to The Remarkables. At the point you’ve got uninterrupted views up and down Lake Wakatipu and across to the mighty Cecil Peak.

Getting here: Walk from downtown Queenstown for a bunch of photo stops along the way. Start the walk at The Bathhouse for a shot of the quaint building beside the lake then head over the little bridge and into the park.

Photo tip: Sunset is beautiful from the tip of the park and facing toward The Remarkables. While the sun sets in the opposite directon, it’s worth watching as the colours change the peaks into a rainbow of warmth. To capture a long exposure or evening shot of Queenstown all lit up, find a spot along the town side of the park for beautiful light reflections and if you’re lucky, the old steam boat!

#8 Park Street – Lake Wakatipu Ride

At the lake entrance to Frankton Arm, you’ll find the shoreline dotted with boat jetty’s and rocky walls. If you’re walking through Queenstown Gardens, it’s worth adding on the extra 10-20minutes to walk along the lake front toward Frankton. Willow trees hang over the water and the passing boats work as a great subject against the mountain scenery.

Getting here: Follow the path from town around the lake front or cut across along Park Street.

Photo tip: It’s a great location for portrait photography so if you’ve got someone with you, ask them to walk along the rock walls or jetty with Cecil Peak behind.

#9 Arrow River, Arrowtown

A twenty minute drive out of Queenstown nestled in the foothills of wooded mountains lies a rocky river that begs to be photographed. Arrowtown is known for being a popular, historic and quaint little village but just behind the main road are a collection of walking trails that wander along the Arrow River. In Autumn the surrounding forest is like a rainbow of reds, contrasting beautifully against the striking aqua blue stream. The river itself was once famous for a gold rush however now it’s a peaceful place where you can experience nature at its finest.

Getting Here: There are a few ways to get to Arrowtown on local buses, tours etc. however my suggestion is to hire a car and drive yourself there because along the way are some great photo spots. The route from Queenstown via Malaghans Road is the most scenic!

Photo tip: Get in the water. I visited in June and the water was a frosty -3degrees but I got in with my underwater housing and captured some over/under shots to showcase the contrast between the icy water and autumn trees.

#10 Historic Chinese Settlement, Arrowtown

In the late 1800’s Chinese miners were invited to Arrowtown to re-stimulate the economy and hunt for gold. The settlement they created is still in Arrowtown today and is one of the most photo worthy locations in the region. You’ll find the most photographed cabin of all located in the car park of all places. It’s a rustic wooden cabin with a backdrop of the Arrowtown mountains and surrounding forest.

Getting here: Once in Arrowtown take the left turn toward the Chinese Settlement instead of turning right into the main street. Alternatively, park your car in the main area by the river and walk 2minutes to the left to the settlement.

Photo tip: Because the most photogenic cabin is located in the car park, arrive early to avoid having a campervan in your shot. If you’re short on time, walk up the hill a little to try and block out the cars and place the cabin in the bottom of your shot to compose it against the trees/mountains.

#11 Queenstown-Glenorchy Road

Hiring a car in Queenstown is essential in my opinion, the landscapes need to be explored up close and it’s the perfect place for road trips! The most spectacular? The road linking Queenstown and the tiny town of Glenorchy that sits at the mouth of the Dart River. Weaving alongside Lake Wakatipu, the road provides wow inducing views that will have you pulling over at every corner to take photographs. Along the way you’ll find Wilson Bay and Bob’s Cove which are closer to Queenstown and from there on you’ll be driving by the water and can stop whenever you see an opportunity.

Getting here: Grab yourself a hire car and find the Glenorchy-Queenstown Rd which runs alongside the river from Lake Esplanade. If you aren’t staying the night in Glenorchy be sure to get back before dark because the road has a lot of corners and can be quite narrow at times and check the weather especially in winter!

Photo tip: Stop as many times as you can. Wilson Bay was one of my favourite stops as you can get right down by the water to photograph the mountains.

#12 Jack’s Point Golf Club

Beneath the immensely intimidating peaks of The Remarkables is a brand new estate called Jack’s Point. From the outside it looks like a regular land development but inside is the Jack’s Point Golf Club and it has some amazing photo spots! Golf courses of course have water hazards and because they are still bodies of water they are the perfect canvas for taking an exact reflection of The Remarkables.

Getting here: Located on Kingston Road just past the turn off to The Remarkables Ski Area you’ll find the stone fence entrance to Maori Jack Road. Follow the road until you see the clubhouse.

Photo tip: Directly in front of the club house is a great place for photographing the reflection! It’s a nice big body of water with a rocky shoreline so you can easily get close to the water level.

#13 The Red Glenorchy Shed

This is the photogenic bright red shed regularly featured on Instagram by photographers and travellers. Nestled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu’s most northern corner you’ll find this great spot for landscapes at all times of the day. The historic shed offers a fun subject to capture, keep an eye out for reflections in puddles or wait around until the stars sparkle above.

Getting here: Follow all signs to Glenorchy and once you’ve found the main street with the cafes, follow it to the waters edge and you’ll see a car park right beside the shed.

Photo tip: Try to visit twice to capture it in a different light. Perhaps shoot sunrise here then go for a long hike nearby and return for sunset or even better…shoot astrophotography here.

#14 Skyline Gondola Lookout

It’s probably the most touristy thing you can do in town but it’s also without a doubt home to one of the best views you can see in Queenstown. The Gondola ride up the hill is quite fun with giant trees lining the route, little lost sheep and goats peeking out from the bushes and the view enhancing with every passing minute. Once at the top the viewing platform provides a 180degree view over the city of Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu and looks over toward The Remarkables which is simply breathtaking. You can also have a little zip down on the luge!

Getting here: You can access the Gondola from the top of Brecon Street, just a short walk up the hill from the main street of Queenstown.

Photo tip: From the top of the luge run is the best view looking south over Lake Wakatipu, especially at sunset as the light dances across Cecil Peak.

#15 Crown Range Road + Summit

Linking Queenstown and Wanaka, the Crown Range Road is the ‘scenic route’ for good reason. In winter, the roads are lined with fresh powder and the landscape is an endless field of white as far as the eye can see. Because the road winds steeply up the mountain like a zigzag, it’s best to take it slow and stop at every vantage point possible for a photo. Once you reach the top you’ll come to a car park with views all the way back to Queenstown and The Remarkables. On the Wanaka side of the range you’ll find Cardrona which has the photogenic Cardrona Hotel. When heading up the mountain from Wanaka (or down from Queenstown) there’s a little stream that runs in a gully beside the road so be sure to find a spot to pull over and shoot some of the mountain scenery.

Getting here: Travel from Queenstown or Wanaka and follow signs to the ‘Crown Range’. The road begins in Arrow Junction, just north of Arrowtown when travelling from the South. In winter it’s essential to have snow chains in your car as the road can get very dangerous. Always check the road conditions before heading up the mountain and keep an eye out for warning signs that are erected daily in bad weather.

Photo tip: Take advantage of the ‘chain bays’ to pull over and capture images. Just before you reach the peak when travelling from Queenstown, you’ll find a great spot to jump over the fence and walk out onto a small path. It’s great for those little people, big landscape shots!

#16 Moke Lake

Hidden behind the small suburb of Closeburn is the magnificent Moke Lake. Framed by mountains, it’s a popular spot for hiking and camping but it’s also completely dark at night meaning…stars, stars and more stars.

Photo Credit: Brent Purcell, follow @brentpurcell_le.nz on Instagram

Getting here: It’s only a 10minute drive from Queenstown to reach the start of the dirt road into Moke Lake. It’s advisble to have a 4WD, especially in winter as the road can get pretty tricky.

Photo tip: Camp out for an evening photographing under the milky way, Aurora Australis hunting and star counting.

#17 Malaghan’s Road – Flight Park

Between Queenstown and Arrowtown are paddocks filled with sheep and horses as the forests and mountains rest behind. Along Malaghan’s Road veer a number of driveways and lanes. Straight, scenic and lined with trees, the road is perfect for perspective as Coronet Peak looks overhead. *Please note – most are private driveways and paddocks. Do not enter, jump over fences or photograph people without consent. Ensure you are safely parked if you decide to stop on the side of the road too.

Getting here: It’s only 15-20minutes from Queenstown, check out the map in this post for the exact location.

Photo tip: Use the lines of the road to create perspective and draw the viewer into the image. There’s also horses in the paddock beside so you could get lucky if they wander over and say hello. Again, please do not enter the paddocks or jump fences, respect that the area is private property.

#18 Shotover River – Arthurs Point

Home to the thrilling Shotover Jet, this spot is one of those ‘can’t stop I’m driving across a single lane bridge’ places. The good news…you can stop. Cross the bridge and you’ll find a carpark on the left where you can park then walk back to the bridge and suck in your stomach as you take photos of the canyon below. Wait long enough and you’ll have the boat zoom past as it weaves it’s way between the hairpin turns narrowly avoiding the rocky edges. A place less commonly visited is found just up the river a little. A short ten minute walk from the Shotover Jet wharf is the entrance to an old gold mining tunnel.

Getting here: You’ll see it on your way out from Queenstown…take Gorge Road and once you get to the bridge about 5 minutes from town, it’ll be obvious where you are.

Photo tip: Walk out onto the bridge for a shot of the gorge below but be super weary of traffic. It’s well worth waiting for the jet boat to pass by to include in your shot!

#19 Routeburn Track (just the beginning)

If you’re not keen to do a full 2-3 day hike and just want to explore the wilderness for a few hours, head down to the start of the Routeburn Track. Located about 30minutes drive from Glenorchy, the road there is photo worthy in itself, let alone the moss covered rainforest and river once you arrive. The first 2-3 hours of this hike are relatively easy, although some sections are quite steep it’s worth it to see the clear cascading waterfalls that flow through giant boulders.

Getting here: Head out of Glenorchy on the Glenorchy-Paradise Road and then turn left into the Glenorchy-Routeburn Rd and across the river. You’ll see a right turn heading down Routeburn Rd and then it’s a dirt road passed sheep, cows and through some stunning scener.

Photo tip: Expect lush green landscapes so flick your camera to ‘cloudy’ white balance to bring out the best in the colours. Take the small path near the start of the track down to the river to capture long exposures of the fast flowing water.

#20 The Flight In/Out

Perhaps the most spectacular photography location of all? The flight in and out…be sure to book a window seat so you can stick your head against the perspex and gaze in wonder at the scenery below. In winter you’ll be treated to a white winter wonderland as the mountain peaks sit pretty from the west coast all the way to Queenstown. If you’re lucky you might catch a glimpse of Mount Cook and also Milford Sound too!

You mentioned being able to get some shots from theh plane ride in/out. We’re flying in from Auckland. Which side of the plane is best to ride on?

January 23, 2017 at 3:43 am

Hi David, exciting to hear you’re heading to Queenstown soon! If you’re flying from Auckland I would sit on the right hand side of the plane so you can hopefully see a peek of Mt Cook and the mountains on the way down. On the descent into Queenstown you’ll get views out both sides of the plane over Lake Wakatipu however it will depend which way they are approaching due to weather. If you were going to choose one side though pick the right (when looking toward the front of the plane) then cross your fingers for clear skies…incredible views! Also if possible try to get a seat in front of the wings (rows 1-10) so you avoid any blur in photos caused by the engines. Can you tell I’m a plane geek yet? Have a great trip!

Hello, we are family of 12 (6 adults and 6 kids) visiting NZ/Australia in December '24/January '25.

We're coming from Colorado and are very much an outdoorsy family. As I'm doing research, I've come to realize that I may already be late to the game as many places seems to be booked up. We are flying into Auckland on the 21st of December and have the North Itinerary planned and completed.

My South Island Itinerary can use use some input if possible. We are leaving Auckland on December 27th for South Island and leaving on January 4th to go to Sydney (we used to live there so want to visit home after a long time).

This is my sample itinerary:

Day 2 - Drive through Arthurs pass, stop at Mt. Cook and settle into Wanaka

Stay in Wanaka (3N) -- We loved Wanaka Haven but it's sold out. Any other suggestions for amazing B&B?

Drive to Te Anu ( 2N) - We are still deciding if we want to do a day trip cruise or overnight Doubtful cruise .

Drive to QT (2N)

Fly out of QT.

The reason why even going to Te Anu rather than just staying in QT (and do coach/ cruise ) is that we want to explore and hike Fiordland National Park. However, if we are already visiting some amazing areas for hiking, perhaps it's better to skip staying at Te Anu altogether? Others may suggest skipping Queenstown , but I heard it's a beautiful city so would be nice to stay there as well.

Thank you so much!

Day 2 - NOOOOO. its way way way too far to drive from christchurch to wanaka, via arthurs pass and glaciers on 28 december. peak traffic, peak holidays, narrow, winding roads, lots of one lane bridges, a couple of mountain passes. This is terrible

otherwise i suggest you fly straight to queenstown and holiday in wanaka. you can do a day trip to mt cook national park and an overnight to doubtful sound.

I think you need to look at a map. It is possible to drive from Chch to Wanaka in one long day day (I did it in both direction a few weeks ago). However the direct route via SH 8 does not go via Arthurs Pass, nor would there be time to detour to Aoraki Mt Cook. The direct drive with photo stops will take between 5 & 7 hours, including lunch at Lake Tekapo.

Then you can allocate the remainder of your days as you wish.

Thank you for your response. We are spending 8 days in one island (South) and another 7 in North.

Thanks for suggestion on having 4 days at each base location.

We were told it would be a long day but def doable if we get an early start.

This post has been removed at the author's request.

"We were told it would be a long day but def doable if we get an early start."

Are you referring to your original plans on Day 2? I mapped it out: https://maps.app.goo.gl/5co1KhLS6uLPzTwE8 Who the heck told you it was "doable"!

Sorry my earlier post sounded harsh. You must have really misunderstood what routing was given to you, or your advisor wasn't explaining themself well.

I fiddled with a Christchurch to Queenstown route for you - but considering New Years and a group of 12 - it's not really going to be feasible.

As per DS it might be best to fly in/out of Queenstown and go from there...

Availability of accom will determine where you go/ stay... look for New Year accom first... 2-3 nights...

I'd suggest something like...

27th fly in to Queenstown head over to Wānaka

28th Wānaka

29th Wānaka

30th Te Anau

31st Te Anau

1st Te Anau or Queenstown

2nd Queenstown

3rd Queenstown

4th fly to Sydney

I really appreciate this. Thank you so much!

#4 the point is if you put your head down butt up and drive drive drive anyone can do that and be a hazzard on the road. But whats the point if you miss the scenery and things to see along the way. Apart from ticking off boxes that you drove through a place and went to the toilet there, there is no point in driving miles and miles for the sake of it, then arriving exhausted, tired and dangerous to other road users.

That makes sense, thank you for the feedback.

I have searched overnight on here and few loved it.

BEHIND THE LENS

Queenstown Photography Tours are photographic tours led by full time professional photographer, Warren Williams. (Finalist - 2016 NZ Geographic Photographer of the Year)

There's many places to consider visiting, with some of the more popular trips being from Queenstown to Glenorchy, exploring the areas tucked away, such as Paradise and Kinloch.

For those a little more adventurous, and not too worried about the cold, perhaps a night photography tour is what you need. I can teach you how to take Milky Way photos and if we're lucky, we may even see the Aurora Australis. These tours are best over the shorter daylight months of April to October. The moon is a big factor too, with a New Moon, or at a time of night when the moon isn't in the sky will give you the best experience.

I currently use  Canon 5D Mk IV's + Mk III's with a variety of L series lens. Let me know if you would like to borrow some gear, or try some out. Otherwise I can give advice on how to get the best out of your own camera.

Are you looking for more of a workshop? Let me know - I can cater to anyone's needs and I'm more than happy to offer a tailored photography workshop. My background over the past 13 years has been wedding photography - so I can also provide workshops for portraits and lighting.

Our tours are fully licensed under the strict New Zealand Transport Agency and adhere to the rules and legisation. Warren has his P endorsement licence, a Passenger Services Licence under the business (Williams Photography), holds a level 2 first aid certificate.

Life is an awfully big adventure …

Material fired out from a sun spot is crashing into the planet's atmosphere this weekend and causing the skies of New Zealand to light up.

A giant spot on the sun, which is 17 times the diameter of our planet, is throwing material into the atmosphere.

The storm has been creating vivid colourful skies around the world, including in New Zealand.

Overnight, many people observed and took pictures of an often purple colour aurora in the night sky.

The last time there was such a strong storm was in 2003.

MetService said most of the country had good visibility and it has received many photos of purple and crimson skies, reflecting the spectacular solar storm.

But many people wanting to see it in places including Wellington, Marlborough and the Deep South were thwarted by cloudy conditions.

Kem Johnson from Mount Somers, about 50 kilometres west of Christchurch, said the aurora there was bright white.

"It wasn't a colourful aurora but it was a white one that seemed to have large rays shooting across the sky, it was bright as."

The skies were clear in west Canterbury and the aurora washed out the skies, Johnson said.

Dunedin resident Lesley said she was prepared for the aurora display thanks to Otago University's aurora app, which was showing an eight out of nine chance of visibility at 6.30pm on Saturday.

"Being able to see auroras with the naked eye, and so eight of nine and then it went to nine out of nine later in the evening, so it's never going to get any better than that."

She headed to St Kilda beach where she said there were more than 100 people.

Astronomer Ian Griffin, from Otago Museum, said New Zealand had been the first to get a front row seat.

" What's happening is material from the sun is crossing space and interacting with Earth's magnetic field and generating electric currents all over the place, that's potentially doing things like interfering with the power grid and also causing amazing aurora, obviously for folks like myself who like watching the aurora, it's a very exciting time."

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the powerful solar storm was likely to continue the rest of the weekend.

It said the storm might pose risks to navigation systems, power grids, and satellite navigation, among other services.

On Saturday, New Zealand national grid operator Transpower shut down some power circuits as a precaution.

Otago University physics professor Craig Rodger believes the Earth could experience more solar storms in the coming weeks.

While this storm was nothing to worry about, there could be more to come, as the sun would remain in its active period for a year, Rodger said.

"The sun is moving into its period, it's called solar maximum which is when it's at its most restless and most explosive on the sun and so something big could well happen in the next few weeks, probably it will be a bit smaller than this."

The sun will be in its 'active period' for the next year.

Rodger said this storm was not as big as those experienced in 2001 and 2003.

"We have been working with the New Zealand electricity industry in our solar tsunamis research project to look at what would happen if there was an extreme storm for New Zealand, something that was more like one in 100 years, and the conclusion is that is something we need to prepare and be concerned about, this event is something like 50 times smaller than those extreme storms."

Astrophysicis Jan Eldridge, from Auckland University, said a solar storm that swept Earth in 1859 could give some clues as to how the current one could play out.

"A similar sized group of sun spots actually blew out the old telegraph poles and we've got so much more communication technology [now], over 9000 satellites in orbit, and so if something that powerful that this is not quite approaching that, but it could do, it could be a significant impact on technology and communication."

So far, no problems have been reported and emergency management officials have been briefed.

Starlink, the satellite arm of Elon Musk's SpaceX, also warned of a degraded service.

It owns about 60 percent of the satellites orbiting Earth and is a dominant player in satellite internet.

Italy travel guide: How to spend 48 hours in Pisa

Italy travel guide: How to spend 48 hours in Pisa. Photo / Getty Images

There’s far more to do in Pisa than its leaning tower, and with cheaper prices than alternative Italian cities, it’s a good destination for your pocket too, writes Kate Wickers

Most visitors don’t stick around in Pisa but rather tick off its famous Torre Pendente (leaning tower) then move swiftly on to elsewhere in Tuscany. However, this historical city is worthy of a linger, and far cheaper an option than the likes of Lucca or Florence. Best of all, once the day-trippers have departed, you’ll have the city to yourself, and a vast choice of bars, cafes, and restaurants to choose from, all thriving thanks to Pisa’s large university, and offering authentic food at excellent value (no grazie to soggy bottomed pizza costing €20 here!).

Begin with a walk along the banks of the river Arno to the waterside triple-tiered church of Chiesa di Santa Maria della Spina, a gothic gem with towering spires and statues. To breakfast like an Italian, cross the Ponte di Mezzo bridge to Borgo Stretto and one of the many cafes found under ancient porticoes (covered walkways). A pastry with a marmalada filling and espresso will cost just €6 at Caffeteria Cellini. From here, my advice is to tuck away your map and get happily lost among the washing-strung, ochre-hued lanes of Pisa’s oldest quarters (and remember to look up so as not to miss the architectural details and pretty balconies). You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to low-key museums to mooch around (most found in historical buildings). On the riverfront, pop into Palazzo Blu – a pale blue 14th-century building housing Pisan art from the 14th to 20th centuries (it’s only €6 for admission) - or the intriguing Gipsoteca di Arte Antica, with its collection of late 19th-century plaster casts, kept in the former church of San Paolo all ‘Orto (admission is free).

Book a traditional Pisan cookery class, enjoyed in a local’s home, and learn how to cook nonna-style Tuscan recipes such as Cecina, a chickpea flatbread, or opt for a food and wine tour. Think focaccia, artisanal charcuterie, and cheese of northern Italy, washed down with Chianti. Pisa’s leaning tower is one of Italy’s most arresting sights, located, along with the magnificent candy-striped duomo and baptistery, in the stunning Piazza dei Miracoli. Save your visit to the tower until late afternoon/early evening (in spring months it is open until 8pm; from mid-June to the end of August until 10pm; so the best advice is to pre-book at ticket in the evening, once the tour buses have departed). To dodge the crowds once more, save the cathedral and baptistery until early next morning.

A stalwart on Pisa’s dining scene since the 80s is Ristorante La Buca. Standout dishes here include creamy burrata with anchovies, paccheri (large tubular pasta) with a seafood ragu, and not to be missed is their signature pistachio souffle (a three-course meal with wine costs around €30 per person).

Most of Pisa’s accommodation is on the old-fashioned side, so it’s worth a little splurge to stay at Palazzo Cini, an award-winning boutique hotel (if this were in Florence, it would be double the price). Begin the day with breakfast in their pretty flower-filled garden, then head straight to the Duomo (although admission is free you still need a ticket and it’s best to pre-book). The oldest parts date back to 1064, but the main façade was completed in the 13th century. Not to be missed is the wooden ceiling embellished with 24-carat gold, and the 14th century octagonal pulpit sculpted from Carrara marble. Then, head to the beautiful round baptistery next door, and the Camposanto, an atmospheric cemetery within a cloistered quadrangle. For a student-style cheap lunch, pick up a slice of takeaway pizza from Pizzeria Rosemary, then lounge on the central grassy area of Piazza dei Miracoli with views to the leaning tower – by now the marble will be positively aglow in the midday sun.

Far from the madding crowds, enjoy a stroll through the Orto e Museo Botanico – an oasis of a walled garden filled with palms, ponds and antique greenhouses, home to Europe’s oldest University botanical collection, dating from 1543. Another hidden gem is Pisa’s Centro Arte Moderna, dedicated to mainly Tuscan contemporary art and photography from the second half of the 20th century to the present day (don’t miss the work of artists, Franco Banti, and Mario Meucci).

Walk the recently restored city walls at sunset for dreamy light over the Leaning Tower and Piazza dei Miracoli. These medieval walls were constructed in the 12th century and have recently undergone restoration. Access them via the staircase in Torre Santa Maria (a round tower located behind the baptistery). From the entrance, guided tours cost just €2 but need to be pre-booked, or you can go it alone. Stop for a Campari soda (which comes with gratis garlic bread) at cosy I’Antica Bottega, then take a stroll to Piazza dei Cavalieri, lined with impressive buildings such as the striking Palazzo dei Cavalieri, Pisa University’s most prestigious property, beautifully floodlit by night.
