Perhaps the most famous burial ground in the nation, Arlington National Cemetery is a U.S. military cemetery that sits just off the banks of the Potomac River.

But, what exactly is it? It's a 127-foot-tall, 53-bell carillon that was given to the U.S. from the people of the Netherlands in the 1950s. It was a thank you for the U.S. contribution to liberating the Netherlands from Nazi Germany.

The carillon sits with a lofty perch over the Potomac River, with views across to the National Mall and Arlington National Cemetery. Daily it plays the Westminster Quarters, but on days that are significant in Dutch and American culture, it performs mini concerts.

A gorgeous tulip garden was planted near the Carillon, as well, which is the most important flower in Dutch culture.

The amenities of the park are top-notch, from the full-size, multi-sport rectangular fields to the webs of walkways, many of which overlook the iconic national monuments of Arlington and Washington, D.C. It also offers landscaped gardens and a three-quarter-mile-long promenade that overlooks the playing fields.

The park is also a prime spot to view public art crafted by Doug Hollis. The two sculptures include Sky Column and Wave Arbor. Sky Column consists of stainless steel masts that soar 50 feet from the ground. At night, it is lit at its base. Wave Arbor features two structures of aluminum, stainless steel, and solar-powered LED lights.

The park is perfect for people of all ages, even children, with playgrounds for kids ages two to five and one for kids ages five to 12.

Just across the Potomac River from Washington, DC , Arlington is famous for being the home of Arlington National Cemetery and the Pentagon. But this densely populated county – oddly, it’s not officially considered a city – has many more sights to see.

Come here to dine, admire art, play ice hockey, explore the drug realm (legally), see a play in an award-winning venue and even walk in nature with some of the most iconic views around. Arlington is much more than you think. Here are 15 amazing ways to experience it.

Be awed by the Iwo Jima Memorial

Pulitzer Prize–winning photographer Joe Rosenthal captured the moment six Marines installed the US flag on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima during one of the most hard-fought battles in World War II. His soul-stirring photo became the inspiration for the Iwo Jima Memorial  – the nickname for the US Marine Corps Memorial – rising atop a knoll overlooking the National Mall.

It’s powerful and poignant, its flag proudly flying 24/7 by executive decree. On summer evenings, the Marine Corps sunset parade , a musical extravaganza of marching and drums and bugles, takes place. Nearby, the Netherlands Carillon, a gift of the Dutch, offers live summer concerts, and automated concerts at other times. The grassy grounds offer an awe-inspiring perspective over the National Mall, a popular fireworks-watching spot on the Fourth of July.

Spot planes at Gravelly Point Park

At Gravelly Point Park, near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, airplanes come in for a landing just over your head, so close you can feel the roar of the engines reverberate throughout your body as you study their underbellies. You’re right on the flight path of landing and departing planes.

Locals swarm to this small, wide-open park for the informal aviation show, bringing picnics, kids and dogs. It’s a circus of activity, with runners and bikers zipping past on the 18-mile Mount Vernon Trail, while the sweeping views to the east take in DC’s monuments rising across the Potomac River. You can only reach the park from the northbound side of George Washington Memorial Parkway.

See a play and have dinner in Shirlington 

You don’t have to go to the Kennedy Center to see star-filled shows in the DC area. The Tony Award–winning Signature Theatre in Arlington is an under-the-radar regional theater seating only 300 people tops. But it's a theatrical powerhouse that not only produces Broadway-caliber shows, it's hosted 59 world-premiere works since its founding in 1989.

You’ll find classics and new productions, established stars and emerging talents. It’s the cultural anchor of the urban village of Shirlington, a lively neighborhood of mostly restaurants, a handful of shops and a movie theater.

Visit hallowed ground at Arlington National Cemetery

Nearly 400,000 stark-white tombstones undulate along the rolling green hills of 639-acre Arlington National Cemetery . Only the most esteemed soldiers, representing every conflict since the Revolutionary War, are buried in this most somber of destinations – the qualifications are stringent.

The welcome center has exhibits, and this is where you can pick up the shuttle that accesses specific sites, or you can walk. (Warning: it’s hilly!) Don’t miss the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and John F Kennedy’s gravesite, marked by an eternal flame.

The land, originally belonging to Robert E Lee, was confiscated by the Union after he fled to join the Confederacy. Sitting atop a knoll, his plantation home, Arlington House , has been reinterpreted to tell the fuller story of all who lived here before the cemetery was established during the Civil War, the Lee family and enslaved workers alike.

Go on a hike at Potomac Overlook Regional Park

The namesake view of the Potomac River at this urban, tree-shaded oasis in the heart of Arlington is seasonal – and not much to write home about, honestly. The reason to visit the rollicking, 67-acre park is to hike on easy trails, taking in a typical Virginia woodland of oaks, maples, cedars and magnolias. You can hear birds flitting about, squirrels rustling in the brush and the quietude of nature.

The nature center has interactive exhibits on local flora and fauna. An outdoor concert series takes place in summer.

Celebrate women’s achievements at the Military Women’s Memorial

Just outside the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery, you’ll spy what looks like a giant neoclassical wall. It’s not just a wall, but a memorial honoring servicewomen from all wars and occupations. Step inside and you’ll discover a modern education center, theater and computerized registry of military women. Plus, there are exhibits with all kinds of interesting facts; for example, you’ll learn there were women spies during the Revolutionary War, while others fought dressed as men.

Another highlight is the 360-degree rooftop view. Behind you, rows of Arlington’s bright-white tombstones march over the hillside, while in front, the star-studded panorama of the Memorial Bridge and Lincoln Monument unfurls before your eyes. Inspiring quotes are etched into glass panels.

Remember 9/11 at the Pentagon and 9/11 Pentagon Memorial

A sprawling complex rising in the heart of Arlington, the Pentagon is home to the US Department of Defense, and one of the world’s largest office buildings, with 6,500,000 sq ft of working space for more than 23,000 military and civilian employees.

Five sides comprise this massive structure, with five above-ground floors and two basement levels, its corridors measuring a total of 17.5 miles. Yet thanks to the spoke-and-ring design, it takes only seven minutes to walk between the two farthest points. The building cannot be toured at this time; check here for updates.

On September 11, 2001, a hijacked jet struck the Pentagon’s west side, killing 184 people. The outdoor 9/11 Pentagon Memorial honors those killed, with 184 illuminated benches inscribed with each victim’s name, age and location at the time of attack. The memorial is open 24/7, and a 24-minute audio tour is available by calling 202-741-1004.

Frolic in springtime beauty at Lady Bird Johnson Park

Claudia Alta “Lady Bird” Johnson was always known for her love of flowers, and while her husband, 36th president Lyndon Johnson, was in office, she strove to make Washington, DC – as well as the nation’s interstate highways – as beautiful as possible.

Renamed in her honor in 1968, Lady Bird Johnson Park  – an island in the Potomac linked to the mainland by bridges – puts on an extraordinary floral show throughout the seasons. A million blooming daffodils followed by 11,000 red tulips announce spring, while prim hardwoods turn into fiery reds and oranges in fall. There are weeping willows, dogwoods, crab apples and more. Completing the picturesque scene, the views across the Potomac take in Washington’s marble monuments.

You’ll find two monuments within the park: the Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove on the Potomac, and the 1922 Navy and Merchant Marine Memorial. The 18-mile Mount Vernon Trail meanders through, ideal for bikers, runners and walkers. Drivers can only access the park from the southbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

Hang out at Ballston Quarter

Arlington’s once-fading Ballston Mall has been resuscitated. Ballston Quarter, as it’s now called, has undergone a facelift to create a sparkling indoor-outdoor space with entertainment venues, activities and, of course, shopping. There are sit-down restaurants featuring some of the area’s favorite chefs, as well as a buzzy food hall offering everything from street tacos to gourmet doughnuts to local craft brews. You can come here for a cooking class, a trivia game, a Caps or Nats watch party on two giant screens and even take part in a live-action adventure at 5 Wits Arlington.

And here’s something else. On the top floor, you’ll find the MedStar Capitals Iceplex , which not only offers a public ice-skating rink, it’s where Alex Ovechkin and other Stanley Cup–winning Washington Capitals practice. Check their schedule here . 

Bike the gorgeous Mount Vernon Trail

Edging the Potomac River for 18 miles from Theodore Roosevelt Island to Mount Vernon, the floral-bedecked Mount Vernon Trail is a primo escape for bikers, walkers, runners and rollerbladers. Only about 4.5 miles are in Arlington, but what a 4.5 miles they are. For much of that length, you have iconic views across the river, taking in the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, US Capitol, Memorial Bridge and more.

Springtime flowers bloom gloriously, while autumn ignites in blazing maples, dogwoods and redbuds. Highlights include Theodore Roosevelt Island, Gravelly Point Park (the popular plane-spotting perch) and Lady Bird Johnson Park. It runs parallel to the George Washington Memorial Parkway, which offers the same views by car.

Stretch your legs on Theodore Roosevelt Island

A pedestrian bridge sweeps you across a placid channel to this 88-acre island in the middle of the Potomac River, where 2.5 miles of hiking trails wander through swampland, marsh and upland forest. Once an overgrown farm that was transformed into a natural oasis in the 1930s, it’s now the domain of squirrels, raccoons, deer and the occasional red fox. The focal point is the 17ft bronze of the 26th US president rising in the center, honoring the man who adored the wilderness.

The island is accessible by car only from the northbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, or on foot or by bike along the Mount Vernon Trail.

Make dinner reservations in trendy Clarendon

Vietnamese refugees flocked to the Clarendon neighborhood in the 1960s and ‘70s, and while few of Little Saigon’s restaurants remain, a couple do, including Nam Viet , with a photo wall full of famous diners. Today though, the neighborhood vibe has transitioned to hip and trendy, with a bevy of terrace restaurants and bars catering to the going-out crowd. You’ll find everything from Italian to Japanese to Irish to Baltic. Ambar , Green Pig Bistro and Circa are perennial favorites.

There’s shopping too, including the outdoor Crossing Clarendon shopping center, with big-name stores like Pottery Barn and Barnes & Noble. Among several annual events that take place here, Clarendon Day is a fun street festival with bar crawls, an arts festival and the thrilling Clarendon Cup, a professional bike race.

Look to the skies at the US Air Force Memorial

Ascending high into the blue sky above Arlington, three curved, shimmering, stainless steel spires honor the men and women of the US Air Force. More specifically, the spires represent the contrails of Air Force Thunderbirds as they disperse in a “bomb burst” maneuver.

Dedicated in 2006, the US Air Force Memorial is the last military service monument to be installed in the DC area. It's surrounded by granite walls with inscriptions celebrating the valor and heritage of aviation pioneers and includes an 8ft-tall bronze Honor Guard statue and a glass contemplation wall paying tribute to fallen airmen and women. You’ll find it near Arlington National Cemetery, overlooking the Pentagon.

Delve into the world of drugs at the DEA Museum

Tucked away in an office building in a nondescript part of Arlington, the last thing you’d expect to find is a thrilling museum dedicated to drugs. But there it is on Army Navy Drive, a whole museum spearheaded by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) that explores the nefarious world of drug activity and enforcement over the past 150 years.

Exhibits delve into the science and history of opium, marijuana and cocaine, while a rotating display highlights such noteworthy moments as “taking down El Chapo.” But it’s the artifacts that are most riveting. Among the DEA’s collection of more than 5000 objects and 40,000 photographs are green platform shoes worn by a DEA special agent while investigating a 1970s cocaine ring; a spiritual icon found among members of the Gulf, Sinaloa and Juarez drug cartels; and a spiked bamboo booby trap that protected drug traffickers’ crops in Thailand.

Admire public art in Rosslyn

Arlington may not seem like an artistic destination, but more than 70 permanent public-art installations sprinkle the county – and counting.

You’ll find many of them in the neighborhood of Rosslyn, including one of the earliest: completed in 1984, Dark Star Park  features spherical concrete sculptures resembling, according to artist Nancy Holt, “extinguished stars.” Anna and David,  by Miriam Schapiro, is a colorful, three-story sculpture of a dancing couple, and Luminous Bodies , marking four corners of the bridge over I-66, is a collection of 26-foot-high illuminated sculptures that change colors at night. Gulf Branch Nature Center and Park

Discover a truly unique experience nestled into one of Arlington’s nature spots! The Gulf Branch Nature Center is a family-friendly attraction not known by many.  Visitors can experience several fun exhibits including the Discovery Room, pollinator garden, animal exhibit room, dugout canoe, Mr. Owl, and the viewing pond.

The Gulf Branch Park is roughly 40 acres and has lots of trails to explore.  Visiting it and the Nature Center is a great Saturday afternoon adventure for the family.

Metropolitan Park

Metropolitan Park is home to Amazon's HQ2 in National Landing. The development consists of two 22-story towers offering over 2.1 million square feet of office space for Amazon employees. Netherlands Carillon

The Netherlands Carillon was a gift to the United States from the Netherlands to thank them for protection during World War II.  The memorial is comprised of 50 bells, the last bell being added in 1995 in honor of the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands.

An observation deck is available to visitors 25 meters from the ground which offers great views of Washington, D.C.. Potomac Overlook Regional Park is a 67 acre park located along the Potomac River.  The park features 2 miles of wooded hiking trails that connect with the Potomac River.  The park also contains a Nature Center that your kids will love.  The Nature Center is home to Energerium which is a collection of interactive exhibits for kids to learn about how energy impacts the world that we live in.  The Nature Center also is home to a collection of live animals like the owls pictured to the right.  Finally, the park hosts a summer concert series that occur every other Saturday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

U.S. Marine Corps Memorial

The U.S. Marine Corps Memorial is known to many locals and tourists as the Iwo Jima Memorial. Things to Do in Arlington, VA: Bon Air Rose Garden

We’ve lived in the DC area for 4 years now and I sometimes feel like we’ve barely scraped the surface on things to do in the DC area. Today I wanted to share one of my favorite places to visit in Arlington, Virginia in the spring- Bon Air Memorial Rose Garden . This stunning formal rose garden in Northern Virginia is a great place to visit if you’re looking for something free to do outside. There is also an adjacent playground, additional gardens, and it’s right along a great paved path. It’s a great place to visit for the whole family!

Bon Air Memorial Rose Garden

I visited Bon Air Park on May 9th and the garden was in full bloom, with many plants that look like they’ll be blooming in the coming weeks. I imagine one day taking a picnic basket and setting up behind the back border of rose bushes. This rose garden is such a treat to the senses! There are over 120 varieties in the garden, which is a pretty astonishing number! These photos were all taken with my very old iPhone as the sun was starting to set- I need to bring my real camera next time.

Make Arlington National Cemetery your first stop when visiting Washington D.C.

Oftentimes I try to place a bit of humor in my weekly columns. To get a chuckle here and there. Sometimes the attempt hits home and sometimes Laureen, my darling wife, will roll her eyes and say, “Back to the keyboard.”

Then there are times when frivolity is not acceptable.

When visiting the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac from our Nation’s Capital, the visitor will understand that laughter is not accepted.

In fact, there are some signs spread out over the nearly 700 acres of rolling green lawns covered with tall green trees that advise the tourist that it is sacred ground and thus silence and reverence is called for.

As I glanced around the grassy plains that entomb over 400,000 graves, I thought that such signs should not be needed.

Laureen and I made the cemetery one of our first stops during our journey to Washington D.C. 

How could we not? So many folks have fought for this wonderful country of ours, that it would be impossible not to visit where many were laid to rest. These soldiers, as all soldiers do, joined a cause they believed in, and many made the ultimate sacrifice for that belief. That belief for a free country called the United States of America.

The founding of Arlington National Cemetery was almost accidental, but hauntingly interesting.

On the highest hill of the cemetery is a beautiful Greek Revival home built in 1802 and completed in 1818 by George Washington Parke Custis, the grandson of George and Martha Washington. When his father, John Parke Custis had died, George and Martha raised Custis at Mount Vernon as their own son.

In 1802, Custis started building that Greek Revival home, now known as the Arlington House on land he had inherited from his late father.

Custis not only wanted to build the home for him and his wife, Mary Lee Fitzhugh, but also as a memory to his grandfather, George Washington, whom he truly loved and admired.

The couple had four children, but only one lived to adulthood, Mary Anna Randolph Custis. Later, Mary Anna married a man by the name of Robert E. Lee.

And the plot thickens.

Lee was the Superintendent of the Military Academy at West Point, but when war broke out between the North and South in 1861, Lee resigned his commission and took over the reins of running the armed forces of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Later he became the commander of the entire Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War.

A little-known fact was Lee did not believe in secession but when it occurred, he felt the need to fight on the side of Virginia, his homeland.

With the property, which is now where the cemetery is located, in such a strategic location right across the Potomac River from Washington D.C, the federal troops felt rather vulnerable from Lee and his army stationed there.

On May 3rd, Brig. Gen. General Irvin McDowell invaded Arlington and Alexandria, capturing the high ground and forcing Lee’s wife, Mary, to flee Fairfax County.

Though the Civil War was only supposed to last a month, according to both sides, the war carried on and became the bloodiest war in American history with over 750,000 soldiers dead, be that Union or Confederate.

With such high body counts, as horrible as it sounds, local cemeteries were overburdened. There was no place to lay the dead for their eternal rest.

By late 1863, the U.S. military decided to use the land surrounding the Arlington Estate, as it was referred to then, for additional acreage for the funerals of the fallen.

A staff member at the cemetery told us that the rumor is the Union Army felt it befitting to bury its dead at the estate of the Southern General who had taken the side of those who wanted to destroy the union.

As more and more land was needed for burials (and getting more and more land was not that easy), the United States Government decided to foreclose on the entire estate for delinquent property taxes owed by Mary Custis Lee, who had inherited the house and property from her father.

An agent of Mrs. Lee did try to pay the money for the back taxes, but he was turned away by the tax collector. 

“No deal for you, agent who represents someone we no longer find favor with,” it is rumored to have been said by a man with a French accent.

Those French.

In December of 1882, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of Lee’s son and the property was returned to the family as the court believed the property had been confiscated without due process.

In March of 1883, Custis Lee then sold the property to the federal government for what in today’s money would be nearly $4,000,000.00. There was even a signing over ceremony for the land overseen by then Secretary of War Robert Todd Lincoln. Yes, THAT Todd Lincoln.

President Herbert Hoover conducted the first National Memorial Day ceremony at the cemetery on May 30, 1929.

There is so much history and sadness all wrapped together, that Laureen and I never needed a sign to suggest we don’t run and scamper among the thousands upon thousands of white marble headstones.

Since the weather was a Washington D.C. summer, we were drenched when we arrived and walked into the visitor’s center.

“Want a water bottle?” Laureen asked me, as she headed to the gift shop - no surprise there.

“And another shower,” I replied.

We decided to take a tram tour, since to see what we wanted to see would require walking about five miles in 96 degrees and a humidity equal to that of the Peruvian rainforest.

The line for the tram was long, no one wanted to walk in the mugginess of the early afternoon heat. Especially, when a couple of staff members were seen pushing a tourist in a wheelbarrow toward the air-conditioned visitor’s center.

“He tried to do it all on foot,” one of the staff members may have said.

Our tram guide, a young woman by the name of Chrissy, was a font of knowledge when it came to the cemetery and what it meant for her and the others who worked there.

“It is not really a job for us,” Chrissy said, as the tram rumbled over the roadway, “It is an honor to be in the presence of so many heroes laid to rest here.”

As the tram moved on, Chrissy would point out certain special locations. “Up there, behind that group of trees is a reddish granite sarcophagus where Robert Todd Lincoln is buried.” 

“Up the road a bit is where many of the Supreme Court Justices are buried, in fact, that large black marble tombstone is where the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is buried.”

There were five stops along the tram trail that we jumped off at: President John F. Kennedy’s gravesite with the eternal flame, U.S. Coast Guard Memorial, General Pershing gravesite, the Arlington House, and the Memorial Amphitheater/Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

There is also another memorial to unknown soldiers at Arlington House. It is where over 2,000 Union and Confederate soldiers are buried together - their identities unknown but their individual valor is never questioned.

All sites located at the cemetery are filled with honor and respect.

We watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and marveled at the precision each of the three soldiers maintained marching, spinning their rifles, shouting orders, while ignoring the large group of looky-loos staring at them.

It is a beautifully choreographed ceremony that begs for silence. Not a voice could be heard - I don’t believe I even heard a bird tweet in the nearby trees.

While strolling through the Arlington House, we were impressed by the original decor and furniture in each of the rooms, including a large traveling trunk that belonged to President George Washington.

One room puzzled us at first, the seance room until we were told that spirituality, that world dealing with the spirits from past lives, was a huge business during the19th century.

Since Laureen feels things that I don’t, I asked her, “Do you feel anything?”

“I feel better since the house is air conditioned,” she replied.

Finally, I felt the same as Laureen.

We spent nearly four hours walking, riding, sitting, and contemplating Arlington National Cemetery, and our conclusion was simple.

Every American should visit and say thank you.

Colonial Williamsburg, the world's largest living history museum, transports travelers back in time to experience the 18th century's historic homes, peruse antique wares and soak up the culture. Talented craftspeople and interpreters portraying historical figures help bring the town's history to life, and the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg display colonial and contemporary folk art created by local amateur artisans. Meanwhile, Williamsburg's two amusement parks – Busch Gardens and Water Country USA – attract families with kids looking for some outdoor fun.

Home to the site of the last major battle in the Revolutionary War, Yorktown Battlefield, this distinguished Virginia town is highly regarded for its historical significance. You'll surely want to add the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown and the Watermen's Museum to your itinerary, but you should also save time for exploring Riverwalk Landing, a waterfront dining and shopping district that hosts several free events throughout the year. When you need to rest your feet, take a load off at peaceful Yorktown Beach, a 2-acre stretch of sand overlooking the York River.

This coastal city provides plenty of options for both relaxation and entertainment, making it the perfect choice for a romantic getaway or a family trip. Rollerblade down the boardwalk or soak up some rays in the Oceanfront neighborhood, hike or kayak in the Sandbridge area or enjoy some retail therapy before grabbing a bite to eat in the Town Center district. Chincoteague Island welcomes visitors with its scenic, serene coastal beauty and its famous wild ponies. Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is the main attraction. Though these beautiful creatures might look tame, they are still wild animals, so avoid approaching, feeding or touching them. Other popular Chincoteague activities include fishing, kayaking, boating and biking. In summer, you can explore the island via Chincoteague's seasonal trolley service, and when you need to refuel, check out the eateries along Main Street and Maddox Boulevard.

Outdoor and historical attractions are the highlights of Jamestown. Greensprings Interpretive Trail features 3 1/2 miles of hiking and bike paths, while the Jamestown Settlement living history museum offers a look at 17th-century Virginia and the events that paved the way for the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. Don't forget to visit Historic Jamestowne, the original archaeological site where the 1607 settlement was located. Travelers should also pop into the town's Glasshouse to see glassblowing demonstrations and pick up a handblown glass souvenir.

Alexandria's charming atmosphere makes it a must-visit for anyone coming to Virginia. Old Town Alexandria draws visitors in with its historical architecture and abundant shops and restaurants. Peruse the Old Town Farmers' Market in the morning (open every Saturday); then, in the evening, grab a drink at a local Irish pub. Meanwhile, those looking for a spookier glimpse of Old Town's past can sign up for a ghost tour. Plus, sightseers who want to take advantage of Alexandria's proximity to Washington, D.C. can catch a unique view of the nation's capital during a riverboat tour on the Potomac River.

Historic Mount Vernon, situated along the banks of the Potomac River near Washington, D.C., is where you'll find the plantation home of the first president of the United States, George Washington. While here, visitors can walk through Washington's 21-room mansion, enjoy a stroll through the estate's four gardens, learn about the enslaved people who lived on the property at the on-site museum and visit the family's tomb. The popular tourist attraction also hosts events like tea with Martha Washington and Revolutionary War reenactments.

Home to the prestigious University of Virginia, Charlottesville is a fun getaway for wine lovers and history buffs. Rolling countryside and dozens of wineries and vineyards surround the town, and the area's excellent topography leads to some tasty varieties along the Monticello Wine Trail. Visitors should also spend some time walking around the historic Downtown Mall, which features more than 150 shops and restaurants, and touring Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's former home. Time your visit for fall to see Carter Mountain Orchard's colorful foliage and sample delicious apple cider doughnuts.

Spend some time in nature during a trip to Luray. Nestled in the Shenandoah Valley, this town is best known for its Luray Caverns, the largest cave system in the eastern U.S. Visitors flock to this underground wonderland to view its otherworldly limestone chambers, which are filled with stalactites and stalagmites, glassy lakes and wonders like the Great Stalacpipe Organ, the largest musical instrument in the world. Outdoor attractions, such as the Rope Adventure Park, the Garden Maze and the nearby Wisteria Farm & Vineyard, offer countless ways to have fun above ground as well.

The state capital is another Virginia locale steeped in history. Visitors will want to check out American Revolution sites like St. John's Church (where Patrick Henry pleaded "Give me liberty, or give me death!") and attractions like Maymont estate and The American Civil War Museum. But this dynamic city isn't stuck in the past. Explore the eclectic boutiques and trendy cafes in Carytown, or browse the exhibits on display at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. If the weather is warm, head to the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden to admire the blooms or find a quiet place to relax along the James River.

Only accessible by boat or small plane, this tranquil island in the middle of Virginia's Chesapeake Bay is perfect for travelers who are seeking peace and quiet. The small fishing village is best explored by bike or golf cart, or by kayaking through Tangier's water trails, which is a great way to spot local wildlife. Other must-do experiences include sinking your toes in the sand at unspoiled Tangier Island Beach, sampling fresh seafood and learning about Tangier's history at the Tangier Island Museum and Interpretive Cultural Center.

This small town in Northern Virginia is an intriguing mix of old and new. History lovers come from all over to stand on the hallowed ground of Manassas National Battlefield Park, the site of two major Civil War battles. Meanwhile, Historic Downtown Manassas' tasty restaurants, breweries and antique shops can't be missed. What's more, Manassas is home to a thriving arts scene, boasting several local art galleries and entertainment venues where travelers can attend the ballet or catch a performance by the Manassas Symphony Orchestra.

A city with a Blue Ridge Mountains backdrop, Roanoke features cultural hot spots like art galleries, live music venues, museums and more. After exploring top institutions like the Virginia Museum of Transportation and the Taubman Museum of Art, grab a bite to eat in historic Grandin Village. Chances are you'll also want to explore the area's incredible scenery on a hiking trip (120 miles of the famed Appalachian Trail run through Roanoke), on a bike ride or from the water via canoe or kayak. If you prefer a long, relaxing drive, Blue Ridge Parkway allows you to view the landscape from the comfort of your vehicle.

Middleburg, an easy weekend getaway destination from Washington, D.C., is known for its horses and its wine. Often referred to as "the nation's horse and hunt capital," the town is home to many equestrians and fox hunters. Plus, numerous wineries surround this town, including the popular Chrysalis Vineyards, Boxwood Estate Winery and Greenhill Vineyards. Spend a sunny afternoon strolling along Washington Street, where you'll find a small collection of restaurants, art galleries and boutiques, then retreat to the Salamander Resort & Spa for a delectable meal or spa treatment.

• 9 Delightful Towns to Visit in Virginia

Virginia , officially known as the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a state located in the southeastern region of the United States. It is bordered by Maryland, Washington DC, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Virginia is known for its significant historical landmarks, including Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement, and Williamsburg, a restored colonial town. Lexington, Virginia, is located in the Shenandoah Valley. Founded in 1778, it is home to Washington and Lee University and the Virginia Military Institute. The Crooked Road is Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail, celebrating the region’s musical history with various music venues and events along the trail. Visitors can watch live performances and learn about Appalachian music traditions. Holston Mountain has hiking trails with views of the surrounding landscape. “He personally planted over 200 flags,” said local historian and tour guide David Heiby , who commented that the president also placed flowers at each of the graves. The flowers were donated by the National Memorial Day Flowers Foundation , a nonprofit organization that began handing out 10,000 flowers to visitors at Arlington National Cemetery in 2011. In 2023, over 300,000 flowers were placed at ANC, with an additional 200,000 flowers sent to various cemeteries throughout the country, , including Alexandria.
