The Rasmus (formed in 1994) is a Finnish melodic alternative rock band, best known for their international breakthrough single “In the Shadows”, hailing from Helsinki, Finland.

Originally formed of high school friends, vocalist Lauri Ylönen, bassist Eero Heinonen, guitarist Pauli Rantasalmi, and Jarno Lahti, the band’s debut gig was at heir school’s pre-Christmas party in 1994. The year after drummer Jarno left the group and was replaced by Janne Heiskanen and Rasmus released their debut EP “1st” in December. Featuring the singles “Funky Jam”, “Myself”, and “Frog” the release sold over 1,000 copies in the space of a few weeks, and 1,000s more upon its rerelease by their new label Warner Music Finland.

The Rasmus’ debut album “Peep” was released by Warner Music Finland in 1996 led by the singles “1st”, “2nd”, and “3rd”, which were essentially small EPs. The group subsequently won the EMMA (Finnish Grammy equivalent) for Best Newcomer in 1996. The Rasmus’ sophomore album “Playboys” hit the shelves in August 1997 and has since been certified gold in Finland aided by the singles “Blue”, “Kola”, and “Playboys”. Unlike their debut, the album boasted a host of additional musicians, which resulted in a cross-genre appeal with influences from rapcore and funk.

In 1998 the band’s third album “Hell of a Tester” arrived marking a change from funk to classic rock. Once again the record went gold, supported by the single “Liquid” which charted within the Top 40 on MTV Nordic and won the Single of the Year and Video of the Year at the Finish Music Video Awards. Following the release Janne Heiskanen left the group to settle in India, and the Rasmus founded their own record label named Dynasty Association. In an attempt to appeal to an audience outside of Finland, The Rasmus signed with Playground Music and released their fourth full-length “Into” in October 2001. The internationally-released album topped the Finnish Album Chart and spawned the popular singles “F-F-F-Falling”, “Chill”, “Madness”, and “Heartbreaker/Days”.

The Rasmus subsequently released the best-of album “Hell of a Compilation” ahead of their fifth full-length “Dead Letters” in March 2003. “Dead Letters” proved to be the band international breakthrough aided by the radio-friendly “In the Shadows”. Like its predecessor the record adopted a dark, moody, and melancholic tone, however far surpassed its success. The album topped the album charts in Finland, Austria, Switzerland, and Germany, and spawned the subsequent singles “In My Life”, “First Day of My Life”, “Funeral Song”, and “Guilty”. The band went on to win the Best Nordic Act award at the 2003 MTV Europe Music Awards, and Five EMMA awards. The platinum-selling full-length “Hide from the Sun” arrived in 2005, followed by “Black Roses” in 2008, and the self-titled “The Rasmus” in 2012.

Live reviews

I've seen The Rasmus once in 2012 and it was great. Unfortunately the insane fangirls where rather annoying, once you wanted to get just a bit closer to the stage they were almost struggeling you. So never get yourself a beer before the show if you want to leave the place in one part. I usually only go to Metal concerts so that was kind of a shock to see how aggressive and unfriendly fans can be.

Enough of the negative part, The Rasmus are an amazing live act. They give all they have to satisfy their fans, play the old and new singles but also the songs only the hardcore fans now (like "Blue"). Unfortunately Lauri was a bit ill on that day, so his voice wasn't as perfect as usual and he had is problems with some songs, but I forgive him that. I would like to see them again as they are an awesome band, but I really hate those crazy fangirls.

The concert was amazing. The support groups were good but went on for a bit too long and I would have liked Rasmus to play for a bit longer. I was very happy with the songs they played and how they played them: some old songs, some new and some plugged in and some acoustic. The performance was also excellent, especially with the Ghostbusters theme tune! The music was even better live than listening to it from the album. The atmosphere with the crowd was incredible because all of people were really happy to be there. All in all, a fantastic experience, would definitely do it again in a heartbeat.

It was an amazing concert. They play about 16 songs and all of them were perfect!

The performance was really good. Lauri gave everything on the stage, Akii played the drums with an awesome energy, Eero interact with the audience singing and giving gifts and Pauli was so immerse in his music. All of it was awesome. It was a magical night. ❤

The show was cancelled and Ticketmaster didn’t warn me and let me buy the ticket anyway. It was terrible for me because I’ve travelled from Brazil to Paris to go this show. Anyway, I love the band but the organization was just terrible and we were walking through the park for about an hour before we found out about the cancelling.

The Rasmus announce 2022 tour and share new single, Bones

The Rasmus have returned with their first new single in three years, Bones.

"It’s about bad karma," Lauri Ylönen says of the track. "Whatever you leave behind in life, you’ll find in front of you one day. This song presents a slightly different sound but still has the typical dark layer of The Rasmus."

Bones is presumably taken from the Finnish rockers' upcoming 10th LP – which they've been working on throughout the pandemic with UK-based, Danish-born producer Joshua, following 2017's Dark Matters. The Rasmus plan to release more singles "in the autumn", before the full record drops in 2022. Then, they'll be heading out on the road…

About THE RASMUS :

The Rasmus were formed in 1995 while the members were still in high school. Their debut, Peep , rapidly went gold in their homeland Finland, making the members rock stars at the age of 16. The follow-up, Playboys , also went gold and earned the group an Emma, Finland’s version of a Grammy. Their third album, Hell of a Tester , included “Liquid,” a track that was voted Best Single of the Year by Finland’s music critics. 2001’s Into album went double platinum in their native country, with its debut single, “F-F-F-Falling,” hitting the top of the charts. An international audience started to build, and the band toured throughout Europe. Their fifth album Dead Letters , released in 2003, became the band’s biggest breakthrough yet, due in large part to the success of the single “In the Shadows”. 2005’s Hide from the Sun went platinum in Finland. Their fourth Finnish chart-topper, Black Roses , was released in 2008, produced by Desmond Child. After the release of compilation Best of The Rasmus: 2001-2009 and a 2011 solo LP from Lauri Ylönen titled New World, The Rasmus released their self-titled eighth album, The Rasmus in 2012. The band returned in 2017 with the album Dark Matters . The Rasmus are still one Europe’s most in demand rock acts. They have toured Scandinavia many times as well as Central Europe, Asia, Japan, Canada, USA and South America.

THE RASMUS Parts Ways With Founding Guitarist PAULI RANTASALMI, Announces Replacement

Finnish rock band THE RASMUS has entered Finland's annual Eurovision selection contest, "Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu" ( UMK ; The New Music Competition). The band has also announced the release of its Eurovision entry bid and new single, "Jezebel" , which will be available on January 17, 2022 via Playground Music .

"Jezebel" was co-written and produced by Desmond Child , who collaborated with THE RASMUS on their seventh studio album "Black Roses" . Child is responsible for formulating some of rock's biggest hits, with co-writer and production credits on iconic songs by KISS , BON JOVI , AEROSMITH and ALICE COOPER , to name a few.

Singer Lauri Ylönen comments: "It was awesome to work with Desmond again. He really knows how to put a hit song together.

" 'Jezebel' is about a girl who takes what she wants, without asking. A free spirit."

Speaking about the collaboration, Child says: " Lauri gives me a call and says 'Hey, I need to write the biggest, greatest song in the entire world ever. Will you do it [with me]?' and I said 'Yeah, but I am in Folegandros (Greece)' and he says, 'I'll be right there.'

" 'Jezebel' is an homage, a tribute, to the strong women of today, who own their bodies, who are in charge of their sensuality, their sexuality, and who are determined to be an equal."

The UMK winner and Finland's next Eurovision Song Contest participant will be chosen at the UMK22 event in Turku Logomo on February 26, 2022. The final will be shown live on Yle TV1 , Yle Areena and Yle 's radio channels from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. EET. The winner will be chosen by TV viewers and the international UMK jury. Those outside of Finland can watch the show at areena.yle.fi/tv.

There is more big news to share from THE RASMUS , as they have announced that founding guitarist Pauli Rantasalmi has left the band. Pauli comments: "I have decided to make my departure from the band and seek for new adventures and challenges in life.

"I want to thank everybody that has made this journey possible, especially all you amazing fans, for the best moments and memories. I love you.

"I'm eternally thankful to my band brothers for everything and wish the best from the bottom of my heart. Lauri , Aki and Eero , I love you.

"Music lives forever!

"This is not the end. It's just time to turn the page."

The remaining band members emphasize that it is an amicable split.

"We have always been like a family, more like brothers than a band," says Lauri . "We are still very good friends, and we wish Pauli all the best."

The torch is passed to Finnish guitarist and singer Emilia "Emppu" Suhonen . Speaking of her invitation to join the band, Emppu says: "I got a very surprising call in the fall and answered 'yes.' Although I was a bit nervous to go to the rehearsal room with the guys for the first time for a test drive, I still had a strong feeling that this would be a good thing. That feeling turned out to be right and playing together felt totally natural right from the first riff. I am THE RASMUS 's new guitarist, and it's pretty insane to be on this ride."

Emppu began playing the guitar when she was five years old and at 13, she made her album debut with the band TIKTAK , who went on to become one of Finland's biggest rock bands in the early 2000s. Since then, she has played in several bands including DAME , ALAVALA and MIRA LUOTI , among other projects.

"At the moment, I'm getting ready for the UMK and the upcoming gigs with this awesome band I'm now in, THE RASMUS ," says Emppu . "Being part of this group is a dream come true on so many levels."

Armed with a new arsenal of songs and a revitalized lineup, THE RASMUS will embark on a world tour in the fall of 2022.

Rise (album)

  • View history

Rise is The Rasmus' tenth studio album which was released on September 23, 2022. The album title and artwork were confirmed when the band released a newsletter on June 10, 2022 when the single, Rise , was released. The track list was revealed later on July 18, 2022.

The album is produced by Desmond Child (who also produced 2008's Black Roses album) and Joshua. It features tracks with former guitarist, Pauli Rantasalmi , as well as recordings with new guitarist, Emppu Suhonen .

The album artwork was created by Henrik Walse and features photos by Venla Shalin. This is the first album since Dead Letters where the full band line-up are on the album cover.

Rise is available in digital, CD and LP formats. A special numbered box-set, limited to 1,000 copies, was also available that includes the CD and LP formats, a bonus 4-track CD, a logo pin, signed card and a 48 page 12" sized booklet containing photos, lyrics and linear notes (but this is now sold out).

Background [ ]

In total the album took 3 years to make. The Rasmus had originally planned to record the new album in England in Spring 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they had to work and record remotely. During this time Pauli Rantasalmi had also made the decision to leave the band, but it wasn't publicly announced until January 2022. [1] Because of how time consuming it was to write and record across three separate continents, as well as Pauli leaving, The Rasmus nearly made the decision to split up.

Lauri flew to Nashville, Tennessee to meet Desmond Child , (producer of 2008's Black Roses ). The original plan was just for him to talk to Desmond about his concerns for the band, but they also ended up writing some songs together, including Jezebel , Rise and Live and Never Die . After this Lauri decided that the band will continue, even if it's without Pauli. [2]

The Rasmus brought in new guitarist, Emppu Suhonen , put the album on hold to compete to represent Finland at the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest on Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu ( Contest for New Music in English) with the song Jezebel . This was released as a single on January 18, 2022. [3] They competed alongside six other Finnish artists and won with a total of 310 points.

The 2022 Eurovision Song Contest Final took place in Turin, Italy and was broadcasted on May 14th. The Rasmus came in 21st place with 38 points. [4] After this the band resumed working on Rise , and released the single Rise on June 10, 2022.

In September 2022, in addition to releasing Rise , Lauri also mentioned that they had booked some studio time to begin work on their eleventh studio album . [5]

Jezebel (January 18, 2022)

On May 11, 2021, The Rasmus announced a 2022 European Autumn tour spanning 28 shows. [6]

On March 2, 2022, The Rasmus announced via their Instagram story that the 2022 Russian and Ukrainian tour dates had been cancelled.

"It is with heavy hearts that we must cancel our upcoming tour dates in Russia and Ukraine. The Rasmus are sending love, strength and support to all people and our dear fans in Ukraine. We think about you and your safety every day and pray that peace is restored in your beautiful country. To our Russian fans, we know you are not responsible for the cruel acts of violence that are being committed by the Russian leadership and that they do not reflect the ideas of the wonderful people we have met over many years of touring there. We hope that this terrible situation is resolved and that we can all be together again."

During Summer 2022, they played Summer festivals all across Finland, as well as a couple of others in Sweden and Estonia. On September 30th they had a special show at the Helsinki Ice Hall, where they had special guests such as Michael Monroe (Hanoi Rocks), Triosis, Ellinoora and more.

On September 26, 2022, limited VIP upgrades were available to purchase for the European tour dates via therasmusstore.com , and they sold out within the first week of availability.

The European Autumn 2022 tour kicked-off on October 10th and concluded on November 3rd. They then finished off the year at the Mexican festival, Tecate Bajio, on November 5th.

The Rasmus have already began announcing shows for 2023. For tickets and venue info visit therasmus.com .

2024 PGA Championship: When it is, how to watch, tee times for golf's second major of year

The second major tournament of the men's golf calendar is almost here.

The 2024 PGA Championship is set to begin Thursday at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, marking the fourth time Valhalla hosts the PGA Championship. Three-time winner Brooks Koepka looks to defend his 2023 title , but Kopeka is far from the only player with a lot on the line.

Jordan Spieth, who has gone more than two years since his last PGA Tour victory, at the 2022 RBC Heritage, is still looking to become just the sixth men's player in history to achieve the career slam. Masters winner Scottie Scheffler, a new father , will look to stay hot after finishing second to Koepka at last year's PGA.

And Tiger Woods, who continues to battle injury issues, arrived at Valhalla on Sunday to hit practice shots and will be on the prowl for his first PGA Championship win since 2007.

Here's everything you need to know about the 2024 PGA Championship:

Putin meets with Xi in China to test 'no-limits' friendship

The Russian president is visiting China on May 16 and 17. He is due to travel to a technology institute under US sanctions.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin at a dinner at the Palace of Facets, a Kremlin building, in Moscow, March 21, 2023.

On his first foreign trip since his inauguration for a fifth term in the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin is visiting China on Thursday, May 16, and Friday, May 17, in what will be a closely scrutinized trip. The state visit comes in response to the trip made to Moscow by Chinese President Xi Jinping in March 2023 and marks the 75 th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. In addition to Beijing, Putin will visit Harbin, in the Heilongjiang province of northeast China.

Despite the almost routine nature of meetings between the Russian and Chinese presidents, who see each other at least three times a year in multilateral settings (G20, BRICS and Shanghai Cooperation Organization summits), this trip has some unique characteristics. For the Russian side, it will be a test of the limits of a friendship that was declared in February 2022, 20 days before the invasion of Ukraine, to be "no-limits."

The ever-closer alignment between the two capitals is "one of the most important geopolitical consequences of the war in Ukraine," wrote a Russian specialist of China, Alexander Gabuev, in Foreign Affairs , in early April. Whether or not this relationship deepens could depend not only on the fate of the Ukrainian conflict, but also on the solidity of the anti-Western axis constructed between Beijing and Moscow.

Putin, who likes to use trade figures on his travels to demonstrate the strength of relations, can take comfort in the fact that trade between his country and China has risen sharply. In 2023, it reached $240 billion (€221 billion) – a meteoric rise from $147 billion in 2021. Significantly, the figure has crossed the $200 billion mark which Xi and Putin had set as their target for 2025.

Vassalizing Russia

The key sectors of this relationship are well known: raw materials and energy for the most part on the Russian side; manufactured and industrial goods on the Chinese side. Chinese carmakers now account for more than half of the Russian automotive market. And Russia has become China's leading supplier of gas – sold at a discount.

The trend is all the more pronounced given that Russia's "Asian pivot" dates back to 2014, in the wake of the annexation of Crimea and the first Western sanctions that ensued. From 2022 onwards, however, it has intensified. This ideological choice, a clear rejection of the West, has now become an economic necessity for Moscow.

Not only has Russia gradually found itself deprived of other outlets, particularly for its oil and gas exports, but Chinese companies are now an indispensable player in compensating for or circumventing the new sanctions imposed by the West. In mid-March, the Moscow Times revealed how Beijing had helped send €580 million worth of European equipment for the gigantic Arctic LNG 2 gas project, from which the French company TotalEnergies has stepped back.

M72 World Tour

the rasmus tour dates 2022

We told you about our new album 72 Seasons , so what’s next now that we’ve escaped the studio? Hit the road, of course! You want a tour, we’ve got a tour... how about two full years worth of shows?!?!

Over the past few years, we have been so inspired by the dedication and family/community vibe of the fans who traveled to San Francisco for our recent weekend celebrations, first in 2019 with the two S&M2 shows, followed by last year’s 40th Anniversary shows. On top of that, we had a blast being a part of the 2021 Wimmer Festivals when we played two nights in one city, each with a totally different setlist. With all of that in mind, the M72 tour was born!

Starting in April of 2023, we’ll be visiting 22 different cities around the world and playing two nights in each city, with each “No Repeat Weekend” show a completely unique experience: Two totally different set lists with two different bands opening the show each night! Purchase a two-day ticket, and you won’t see the same song twice for a total of over 30 songs spanning our 40+ years of being lucky enough to make music. Most of the shows (sorry, not all - we tried!) will be on Fridays and Sundays, so we’ll be sure to have lots of extracurricular events for you to hang with fellow Metallica fans at before the shows kick-off and on the Saturday night in between.

Presented worldwide by Liquid Death and Blackened American Whiskey (in North America only), and brought to you by our friends at Live Nation, the M72 tour also launches a completely different look for us in stadiums – we’ll be in the round in the middle of the field. On top of that, the Snake Pit has been relocated to the center of the stage so that fans there will have a complete 360 view of the show. Each weekend offers a variety of Enhanced Experiences , ranging from access to a meet and greet, production and stage tour, food and beverage in the “Black Box” lounge to early entry into the venue and the aforementioned Snake Pit. The very popular “Black Laminate” is back, now known as the “I Disappear Ticket,” and is the ultimate pass for the fan who wants to run away with us for multiple weekends. Grab one of these and attend every show on your continent or in the world! For more information about Enhanced Experiences and I Disappear Tickets, visit wearesuper.co/metallica .

In keeping with the theme of two completely unique shows each weekend, we’re excited to share the stage with different bands each night, including some we have traveled with before and new friends who are joining us for the first time. Signing up for the entire adventure with us are Five Finger Death Punch, Ice Nine Kills, and MammothWVH, and some of you will see Pantera, Architects, Greta Van Fleet, or Volbeat, depending on the shows you attend. All the details are in the listing of dates below and on the individual show pages.

Two-day discounted tickets will be on sale Friday, December 2, for all shows. Fan Club presales start early on Wednesday, November 30, with various other presales beginning later that day and throughout the week. To request your Fan Club presale code, visit metallica.com/presale-code . If you cannot join us for the entire weekend, single-day tickets will be available starting January 20, 2023.

A portion of proceeds from every ticket sold will go to the band’s All Within My Hands foundation. Founded in 2017, AWMH’s efforts to assist and enrich the lives of members of the communities who have supported the band have raised nearly $13 million – providing $5.9 million in grants to career and technical education programs in the US, over $2.5 million to combat food insecurity, and more than $3.2 million to disaster relief efforts worldwide.

We cannot wait to embark on this new adventure, play some new music, and spend our weekends in ’23 and ’24 with YOU!

Show 1 Support Europe: Architects & Mammoth WVH ** Show 2 Support Europe: Five Finger Death Punch & Ice Nine Kills * Five Finger Death Punch & Ice Nine Kills play Show 1 in Paris, Architects & Mammoth WVH play Show 2 in Paris ** Volbeat replaces Architects on Show 1 in Gothenburg

Show 1 Support North America: Pantera & Mammoth WVH *** Show 2 Support North America: Five Finger Death Punch & Ice Nine Kills *** Greta Van Fleet replaces Pantera on show 1 both weekends in Mexico City

Citi is the official card of the M72 Tour. Citi cardmembers will have access to presale tickets in the U.S. beginning Wednesday, November 30 at 2:00 pm local time until Thursday, December 1 at 10:00 pm local time through the Citi Entertainment program. Student Film Focuses On Teen Suicide

Film major and vandal swimmer maddie timm’s film premiered at the kino film festival.

Her friend committed suicide in high school.

The tragedy was a painful low point that followed Maddie Timm like her own reflection in a pane of glass.

Before she took her life, the friend had meant – many times – to attend a high school swim meet in which Timm competed. It was just one thing left undone.

When Timm enrolled at U of I, she joined the Vandal swim team and knew what her major would be. She would study film  in the Journalism and Mass Media  department and address suicide in one of her movies.

Timm’s film, “One Less Lonely Ghost,” which she completed as part of her capstone project, tells the story of the relationship between two friends, one living and the other a ghost who lost their battle with mental illness. It premiered at the Kino International Short Film Festival at Moscow’s Kenworthy Theater in April 2024.

“I wanted to show that the people who go through these struggles, they can choose to stay,” Timm said. “I wanted to make a film to promote awareness and to help others recognize the signs and be present for people who may be facing decisions that can lead to suicide.”

Timm’s friend — the film character’s name is Lively — took her life in 2019. Her death was followed by the suicide of another teen acquaintance.

“It really shook our small community,” said Timm, who grew up in Mesa, Arizona. “We had not gone through anything like that before.”

The suicides in her town came on the heels of a TV made-for- television series depicting a range of social issues affecting teenagers. It told the story of a young woman who commits suicide and leaves behind a box of cassette tapes on which she has recorded the reasons she chose to kill herself.

Every day I am around these creative people and in this great small community and wonderful learning environment. It really is more than I ever expected. — Maddie Timm. Senior. Film.

Timm’s film takes a different tack.

“The message of the Netflix series was so wrong,” Timm said. “People ended up losing their life from it. I wanted to turn the tables. My story ends on a happier note.”

Timm who grew up with competitive parents — her dad played basketball in college and was a reliable participant in Spokane’s annual Hoopfest, and her mom was a college track and field athlete — started swimming at 5 years old.

“I spent every day in the pool before and after school,” Timm said.

She became a high school standout and knew she would swim at the collegiate level.

Her other dream was to be a screenwriter and film maker.

“I was just passionate about it. I knew it was something I wanted to do,” she said.

Woman stands in film studio looking through a film camera.

After the suicides in her hometown, and to address the Netflix series, she also knew what her first film would be about.

“I took from those two stories,” she said. “I realized that film was how I could reach people, so the ultimate goal became to help people, to get people to form relationships and know that they are not going through these trials alone.”

The film, which includes a U of I actor and Lionel Hampton School of Music score, was filmed around the Palouse and is being pitched to other film festivals across the country.

“We had so much great input and so much help putting this together,” she said. “I think it’s impactful. I hope it helps people. That’s the ultimate goal.”

When she pitched the story as a capstone, JAMM peers and mentors jumped on board.

hand holds an event pass that reads One Less Lonely Ghost Madison Timm

“She had an impactful story to tell about suicide and mental health,” Professor Russell Meuff, director of the film and television program, said. “She was passionate and presented a clear artistic vision for her project. And she was confident in her ability to execute her plan. We love when our students can tell stories that are engaging but that also help foster conversations about important issues in our world.”

Timm’s decision to accept a swim scholarship after applying at U of I was an easy one, she said.

“I searched for universities with swim teams and film departments,” she said. “There weren’t many.”

Spokane, where her mother’s parents lived and where her dad played in Hoopfest, wasn’t far from Moscow. She had visited there a lot and its nearness gave her a sense of familiarity. When she was offered a place on the Vandal swim team, she accepted.

While at U of I, Timm got the opportunity to work on the production team for U of I athletics in addition to honing her own filmmaking, photography and screenwriting skills at JAMM . The journalism and mass media faculty helped her secure a grant as well as equipment to shoot her capstone project.

“I am so thankful I came to U of I,” Timm said. “Every day I am around these creative people and in this great small community and wonderful learning environment. It really is more than I ever expected.”

Timm is in close contact with the family of the friend who took her life, she said. She has kept them — including her friend’s three younger siblings — up to date on the film’s production and speaks regularly with her friend’s mother.

After the death, the friend’s mom apologized to Timm for not attending a swim meet with her daughter.

“I am so sorry for you,” the mother told Timm. “My daughter and I always wanted to attend a swim meet, but now she will not have the chance to watch you.”

The apology was heart rending, Timm said.

“It broke me,” Timm said. “I think learning from people who lost loved ones is really impactful. It really impressed upon me that I needed to do something for these families who have suffered like this.”

Russians are so desperate to see Western pop stars, they are paying to go on 'concert vacations' abroad

  • A Russian tour operator is offering concert-themed package vacations.
  • Russian fans can pay to see pop stars like Ed Sheeran and James Blunt in Europe.
  • The company has sold 150 concert vacations since last year, according to The Telegraph.

Insider Today

Western pop stars have largely boycotted Russia amid its invasion of Ukraine.

Russian music fans, however, appear to be so desperate to see their favorite artists that they are paying thousands to go on "concert vacations" abroad.

Tour operator Russian Express has seen large demand for its concert-themed vacation packages, according to The Telegraph. The packages include the chance to see Ed Sheeran in Zagreb , Croatia, and James Blunt in Dubai.

A spokesperson for the operator told The Telegraph that it had sold 150 concert vacations since it launched its packages in the fall of last year. The spokesperson said these kinds of vacations are "consistently popular" and that it selects artists that appear to both "young people and the older generations."

"Imagine Dragons and Snoop Dog are the choice of young people. Scorpions and Rammstein are the choice of older people," the spokesperson told The Telegraph.

One of the packages — a five-day trip to see Ed Sheeran perform in Belgrade, Serbia, in August — costs around $1,123.

Sheeran, who last performed in Moscow in 2019, has publicly expressed his support for Ukraine and performed at the Concert for Ukraine fundraiser in 2022.

"Western superstars don't perform in Moscow anymore," Jonny Tickle, a British man living in Moscow, wrote on X. "As a result, some companies have set up travel packages including flights, accommodation, and concert tickets for Russians who want to watch their favourite singers like Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa and Adele.'"

Tickle also posted ads by Moscow-based radio station Europa Plus, which is running a competition called " Live Tour 2024 ." Prizes include packages to see Adele in Munich, Coldplay in Budapest, and Taylor Swift in Vienna.

In 2021, Coldplay's bassist Guy Berryman wrote on X that the band would "for sure" want to perform in Russia after a fan asked if there was anywhere he would like to play that he hadn't visited.

However, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Coldplay didn't include Russia dates on its tour.

In 2022, Coldplay invited Svyatoslav Vakarchuk , lead singer of the Ukrainian rock band Okean Elzy, onstage at their show in Brussels.

"We are at war. I want you to know we are fighting not only for Ukraine, we are fighting for world peace, freedom, and democracy," Vakarchuk said in a video of the concert posted to X.

Russian Express and Europa Plus did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

2024 PGA Championship picks, field, predictions, odds: Golf expert avoids Scottie Scheffler at Valhalla

Patrick mcdonald just locked in his pga championship 2024 best bets for the second golf major of the year at valhalla golf club.

scottie-scheffler-3-usatsi.jpg

Brooks Koepka will try to defend his title successfully and join an elite group when he competes in the 2024 PGA Championship, which begins Thursday at Valhalla Golf Club. Koepka, who recorded back-to-back victories in this tournament in 2018 and 2019, is hoping to repeat the feat that only has been accomplished by Tiger Woods (1999-2000, 2006-07). With another triumph, Keopka would join Walter Hagen (five), Jack Nicklaus (five) and Woods as the only golfers to win the PGA Championship at least four times. The 34-year-old also would become just the 15th player with six or more victories in major tournaments, as he captured the U.S. Open title in 2017 and 2018.

Koepka is 12-1 and Scottie Scheffler, who won the Masters for the second time in his career last month, is the 3-1 favorite in the latest 2024 PGA Championship odds. Rory McIlroy is next at 6-1, while Jon Rahm (10-1), Xander Schauffle (12-1), and Ludvig Aberg (12-1) also are among the top PGA Championship 2024 contenders at 12-1. Before making any 2024 PGA Championship picks or bets, you need to see the PGA Championship 2024 predictions and best bets from golf insider Patrick McDonald .

McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in 2022 after stops at NBC Sports and RyderCup.com. Covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and more. Featured weekly on the Early Wedge, he has given out numerous winners already in 2024, including Jake Knapp (50-1) at the Mexico Open. Anyone who has followed his lead is way up.

Now, McDonald has focused his attention on the 2024 PGA Championship field and has locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can only see them here .

Top 2024 PGA Championship expert picks

One shocker from McDonald: The expert is fading Scottie Scheffler, who is priced too short to back in such a deep and talented 2024 PGA Championship field. It's difficult not to go with Scheffler, who is ranked No. 1 in the world and has won four of his last five events. One of those victories came at the Masters last month, when the 27-year-old shot a 4-under 68 in the final round to finish four strokes ahead of Ludvig Aberg and win the tournament for the second time in three years. However, McDonald does not find the odds on Scheffler very appealing. "He's the rightful favorite, as he's the best player in the world by a very wide margin, but I can't get behind Scheffler at +300," McDonald told SportsLine.  See who else to fade here .

On the other hand, McDonald loves the value on Xander Schauffele at 12-1. Ranked fourth in the world, Schauffele is on a 39-start drought since posting back-to-back victories at the Travelers Championship and Scottish Open in the summer of 2022. But the 30-year-old has posted eight top-10 finishes in 12 events this season, including finishing as the runner-up at the Players Championship and last week's Wells Fargo Championship. "He has been the second-best player in the world from a statistical sense and is as good of a sure thing when it comes to entering the weekend in contention," McDonald said.  See who else to back here .

How to make 2024 PGA Championship golf picks

McDonald has locked in his best bets for the PGA Championship 2024 and also has selected a longshot who's priced well over 50-1. This golfer "has made significant strides in his game" this year. If this player can pull off a stunning victory, he would cash in huge for anyone who backs him.  You can only see the picks at SportsLine .

So which players should you target or avoid for the 2024 PGA Championship, and which golfer in the PGA Championship 2024 field could bring a huge payday of more than 50-1? Check out the odds below, then visit SportsLine to see Patrick McDonald's top picks for PGA Championship 2024, all from the expert who has given out numerous winners already this year .
