PLAN YOUR VISIT

A visit to New Orleans would not be complete without spending some time in one of its most famous locations.

As one of the city's oldest neighborhoods, there is much to learn and experience when you are there in the Treme (pronounced "Trim-Aye")

It is named for Claude Treme a French milliner (a hat maker). He married a Free Woman of Color, Julie Moreau.

She had acquired the land when she bought the plantation she had been enslaved on. The two of them began to subdivide the land in 1812.

From its earliest beginnings, as one of the nation's few multicultural communities, its character was developed with a combination of immigrants, refugees, and Free People of Color all converging on the area from as far back as the 1700s.

The significance of such a community growing against America's tumultuous background has created an area known for its famous jazz funerals, Mardi Gras Festivities, and historical sites.

How to Get Here

A quick walk from the French Quarter, the Treme begins at Armstrong Park, 701 Rampart Street.

You can walk away from the river on Dumaine St., Or, if you are at either end of the Quarter on Rampart you can ride the Rampart St. Car for $1.25.

How Much Time to Devote Here

So, our tour of Treme lasts 2 hours, so we feel that is the minimum you should devote, but we feel at least a 1/2 day in the neighborhood is warranted.

Is the Treme Safe to Visit?

It is a residential neighborhood that is safe to walk around during the day. Late in the evening is another story.

TOP THINGS TO DO IN TREME

St. Louis Cemetery #1

Established in 1789, it is the oldest cemetery in New Orleans.

Located right at the edge of the French Quarter the tombs contain the remains of many of the old Creole families that lived there throughout history.

Here you'll see multi-story tombs of people from as far back as the French colonial days.

Buried there you'll find the first black mayor of New Orleans and Marie Laveau - the legendary voodoo queen.

Consider taking a St. Louis Cemetery #1 Tour , which runs all day, every 15 minutes, and is a great start to your exploration of Treme.

Louis Armstrong Park/Congo Square

Located on the outer edge of the French Quarter, Louis Armstrong Park is dedicated to one of the City's most favored residents and traditions.

This 32-acre green space with several kids' playgrounds has played a significant role in the city's history and is also known as the city's New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park.

From as far back as the early 1800's all manner of events have been held nearly every Sunday in this prominent location.

This was the only day of the week when African Americans, both slaves and freemen, were allowed to openly gather and make music together.

Those many Sundays of long ago were instrumental in the development of one of the purest American styles of music - jazz.

Every Sunday at @3 pm, you can join in on a free drum circle in Congo Square ( video ). It's among the top free things to do in NOLA.

You can get a taste of the history and flavor of the park on our Music, Arts, and More Tour , which usually takes place on Fridays and Saturdays at @2:30 pm. 

Backstreet Cultural Museum

The Backstreet Cultural Museum is home to a number of artifacts, memorabilia, films, and costumes that reflect the growth of the African-American culture in New Orleans.

Exhibitions include exquisite displays on the Mardi Gras Indians, jazz funerals, and the many social clubs that emerged over time and.

They illuminate the struggles that African Americans had to overcome and their triumph over the obstacles that were represented in its music.

You'll also see their famous Film Collection, voodoo artifacts, Baby Doll exhibits, and collections from the social aid and pleasure clubs of the region.

A trip to the Backstreet Museum is much more than fun; it is also educational and entertaining.

The Backstreet Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm and admission is $10.00 per person.

Food, particularly soul food, is what you should seek out in the Treme!

Jazz Mass St. Augustine’s Catholic Church 

1210 Governor Nicholls St, New Orleans, LA 70116

Since its dedication to freedom from oppression in 1842, this Treme church was available to free people of color, who eventually purchased pews for enslaved people to worship alongside them since they could not pay for the pew fees in practice at the time.

In 2004, the church added a memorial to the slaves who lived and died in the area. The large chain cross is adorned by hanging angle shackles.

New Orleans African American Museum of Art, Culture, and History 

1418 Governor Nicholls St, New Orleans, LA 70116

This complex is currently closed for remodeling. When it reopens, it is the epicenter of activities in the neighborhood.

You can still pass by and see the historical buildings that were typical of traditional Treme Homes.

Please check their website, http://www.noaam.org/ for an opening date.

St. Anna’s Episcopal Church

1313 Esplanade Ave, New Orleans, LA 70116

St. Anna’s has always had an emphasis on social justice for all; they were the first church in the city not to charge pew fees since opening in 1846.

This is an Anglo-Catholic Church and certain Catholic rituals aren’t followed. In fact, one bishop destroyed the confessional booths with an ax in the 1940s.

WHERE TO EAT IN THE TREME

Willie mae's scotch house.

2401 St Ann St.

A Food Channel favorite many of our guests ask about Willie Mae’s before we can suggest it.

Originally it was a bar, but after a location change in 1957, the restaurant also housed a barbershop and beauty salon.

Their Wet Batter chicken is what they have been known for ever since.

The Food Channel and the Travel Channel have both named it “America’s Best Fried Chicken”.

So, maybe it is worth a trip to the Treme! 

Dooky Chase Restaurant

2301 Orleans Ave

Leah Chase, who passed away in 2019, was considered to be the Godmother of Creole Cuisine.

So much so that there has been a documentary about her and Tatiana from The Princess and the Frog is based on her.

Their lunch buffet is what we suggest, with an assortment of Creole and soul food cuisine.

Dooky Chase Restaurant is one of our top 10 places to get gumbo in New Orleans.

Make sure not to miss the pictures of celebrities and dignitaries that have sat at Leah’s table.

A new addition to the neighborhood Fatma’s offers Mediterranean/Turkish cuisine and beverages to the Treme.

Fatma has owned many establishments in the Metropolitan New Orleans Area, so we are sure it will please your sense.

Mother-in-Law Lounge

1500 Claiborne Ave, New Orleans, LA 70116

Beloved late local musician Ernie K-Doe opened the Mother-in-Law Lounge in 1994; it was named after his smash hit “Mother-in-Law.”  

The bar is a shrine to the flamboyant character who would often greet guests at the door.

It was reopened one year after being flooded after Hurricane Katrina passed by his widow Antoinette K-Doe.

After her eventual death, famed trumpeter Kermit Ruffins reopened the iconic bar as Kermit’s Mother-in-Law Lounge in 2014.

The Candlelight Lounge

Definitely a dive, this is the place to see generations of New Orleans musicians play for each other.

We suggest calling ahead to see if they have live music on the night you plan to visit.

If they do you will enjoy yourself and the cheap drinks. We do suggest getting a taxi or Uber in and out of the neighborhood at night. 

Bullet's Sports Bar

Featured on the HBO Show Treme Bullet’s is a neighborhood bar.

Call ahead for live music, and you will get a truly authentic New Orleans experience.

Chris Froome on Possible Tour de France Return: ‘It’s Still Too Early to Say’

Chris Froome returns to racing Wednesday for the first time since breaking his wrist in March and is still holding out hope of returning to the Tour de France .

The 39-year-old races at the one-day Mercan’Tour Classic Alpes-Maritimes in a warm-up ahead of the Critérium du Dauphiné, which starts Sunday in France.

Froome is hoping a strong ride at the Dauphiné could see him punch his ticket with Israel Premier Tech for the Tour, starting June 29 in Florence, Italy.

“It’s still way too early to say,” Froome told Eurosport of the Tour de France. “First things first, let’s get through today, and get into the Dauphiné and see how the condition is.”

The four-time Tour champion was injured in Tirreno-Adriatico when he suffered a wrist fracture.

Froome came into 2024 determined to return to the Tour after the team left him off the 2023 squad.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve raced, since I fractured my wrist in Tirreno,” Froome told Eurosport . “I had to wear a cast for almost two months. I’m looking forward to racing again, and next week going off to the Dauphiné.”

Froome was forced out of Tirreno-Adriatico after a spill and did not start stage 5. He revealed that he wore a cast for nearly two months, and is coming off an altitude camp with some of his teammates.

“I’m fully recovered, and I’ve just came down from an altitude camp with the team, and I am looking forward to racing again,” he said. “I haven’t raced in a few month, so just getting back into the race again, finding the legs, and helping. We’ve got a couple of guys who are really aiming for the victory.”

Despite some public spats with team owner Sylvan Adams, Froome said he’s even considering racing beyond the end of his current contract that ends in 2025.

Israel Premier Tech has a large pool of riders who could race the Tour, including Stephen Williams, Jakob Fulgsang, Derek Gee, and others.

Froome, who last won the Tour in 2017 before his devastating crash at the 2019 Dauphiné, is hoping to return to at least try to chase a stage victory. In earlier interviews, he said he’s all but given up on his dream of winning a record-tying fifth yellow jersey.

The “Meet the Parents” star , 80, told Entertainment Tonight about the “very nice, sweet” celebration, which took place shortly before next week’s start of Tribeca Film Festival kickoff. De Niro is a co-founder of the annuial event.

“She had a little cake, it was very nice, sweet,” said the Oscar winner, who shares Gia with girlfriend Tiffany Chen . “She’s pure joy, there’s nothing about her, there’s no judgement, there’s no anything, she just is what she is and it’s just pure joy for God sakes.”

The “Taxi Driver’ star surprised everyone when he corrected an ET Canada reporter last May that his “six kids” were “seven, actually.”

“I just had a baby ,” he said, noting neither when or with whom he’d welcomed his seventh child.

Two days later, De Niro told “CBS Mornings” that he and Chen, a martial arts instructor he met while working on 2015’s “The Intern” — planned the baby.

“She was brought here by love,” he told co-host Gayle King at the time.

DeNiro and Chen were first romantically linked in 2021. The “Good Fellas” star’s other six children — from his marriages to Diahnne Abbott and Grace Hightower and his relationship with Toukie Smith — range in age from 12 to 56.

Last summer, De Niro’s 19-year-old grandson Leandro , from adoptive daughter Drena De Niro, died of an overdose .

Jennifer Lopez  has canceled her ‘ This Is Me… Live’ summer tour to spend more time with her family and is “heartsick” over the decision, the singer announced to fans in her newsletter Friday.

The news does not come as a total surprise, as the tour has been beset with reports of poor ticket sales and many unsold seats on ticketing websites.

Various media reports said that the need for family time was necessary amid reports that she and husband Ben Affleck are splitting; reps for the singer did not comment on the reports.

Sources close to Lopez insisted that the tour was not being canceled due to poor ticket sales, despite the reports and seating charts, and pointed to strong sales in such markets as Newark, Orlando, Miami, Chicago, Anaheim and Toronto. However, seating charts for multiple other dates showed very poor sales.

Lopez initially announced the trek in February to coincide with the release of her latest album “This Is Me… Now” and its accompanying two films, which celebrated her reunion with Affleck. But she quietly canceled some of its dates last month in cities like Cleveland and Nashville, likely due to poor sales. The rebrand suggested a pivot from a tour focusing on the new album’s songs to one spanning her discography, a move that was presumably intended to entice listeners who didn’t connect with her latest material.

Ellen DeGeneres announces farewell tour dates, including 'special taping'

Ellen DeGeneres is making the rounds for what is expected to be her farewell comedy tour.

On Wednesday, the 66-year-old comedian announced a total of 27 dates for Ellen's Last Stand…Up Tour , beginning on June 19 until Aug. 17. She is including stops in San Diego, Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago and Nashville, Tennessee.

The final two shows, occurring in Minneapolis, will be a part of a "special taping."

"This will be the last opportunity for fans to witness a comedy legend in her final curtain call," according to tour producer Live Nation.

Presale tickets for the tour are going on sale Thursday at 10 a.m. local time on ellenshop.com/tour . The presale code is "CHICKEN," she announced on Instagram .

General onsale begins Friday at 10 a.m. local time on LiveNation.com .

Eight of the dates are already sold out as they were previously announced.

Ellen DeGeneres reportedly discussed show ending during earlier standup show

DeGeneres officially made her return to the stage for her farewell tour in April at Los Angeles' Largo, breaking her silence two years after her  long-running talk show ended  in the wake of  allegations of a toxic workplace .

According to  Rolling Stone  and  People , DeGeneres took the opportunity to address the elephant in the room: her absence from the limelight in recent years.

"We were both just laying low for a while," she said of herself and her wife of 15 years,  Portia de Rossi , per the outlets.

Reflecting on the backlash she experienced after a  Buzzfeed News  published a report in July 2020 detailing current and former employees' claims that they faced racism, fear and intimidation while working on the show, DeGeneres summarized: "The 'be kind' girl wasn't kind. I became this one-dimensional character who gave stuff away and danced up steps."

When asked by an audience member whether she was able to dance through tough times, DeGeneres replied, "No, it's hard to dance when you're crying. But I am dancing now."

The comedian took a moment to be vulnerable with fans on the first show of her tour.

"I'm making jokes about what happened to me but it was devastating, really," she said. "I just hated the way the show ended. I love that show so much and I just hated that the last time people would see me is that way."

In a monologue commemorating her  final episode  after 19 years on air, DeGeneres said, "I walked out here 19 years ago, and I said that this is the start of a relationship. And today is not the end of a relationship. It's more of a little break. It’s a, 'You can see other talk shows now. And I may see another audience once in a while.'"

DeGeneres' contract expired in May 2022, when the show aired its final episode, and before this, she spoke publicly about potentially ending the show.
