8 Top Champagne Houses in Reims, France

Wine lovers visiting Paris often choose to take a day trip to Reims for Champagne tasting. Getting there via train from Paris is actually very easy and quick. Then you’ll have the rest of the day to enjoy the bubbles at a few of the top Champagne houses in Reims.

Reims is the center of the Champagne world in France. You can visit world-famous estates in Reims and Epernay , such as Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, and Taittinger, or check out the smaller Champagne houses you may not have heard of.

veuve clicquot1

All you’ll need are a few advanced appointments, your walking shoes (or a quick Uber ride), and enough time to do it justice.

Below you’ll find all you need to know about setting up and enjoying Champagne tours and tasting in Reims.

How to Visit the Champagne Region

The best way to discover the region is by driving The Champagne Trail, which covers over 250 miles that wind through rolling hills, along vineyard covered valleys and past quaint little villages. All along the way you can stop to visit the growers and winemakers, to taste Champagne, and to learn as much as you like about the tradition.

There are two main cities in the Champagne region to visit, and the Champagne trail will take you between the two within just a 30 minute drive. In Reims, you can visit world-famous Champagne houses, such as Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, and Taittinger.

Champagne region in France

In Epernay, you can spend some time walking along the Avenue de Champagne, popping in at tasting rooms along the way. The easiest way to get to the Champagne region is by car from Paris. If you’re already visiting, you can rent a car in Paris and take a day or overnight trip to Champagne.

You can take the train from Paris to Reims, but it’s not very easy to get around to the Champagne houses without a car, and you’ll definitely need a car to visit the countryside or to go into Epernay. Below you’ll find all you need to know to plan a road trip in the Champagne region, for wine tours and tasting.

Self-Guided or Group/Private Wine Tour

The first consideration you’ll probably be making is whether you want to do a self-guided or a group/private guided wine tour. If you don’t have a designated driver, or don’t wish to spit the wine instead of drinking it, you will need to take a tour or hire a driver.

There are many to choose from. You can go on a group tour, which are plentiful, often including up to 10 people and are on a pre-planned route that you can’t decide on. Tours typically go to great wineries and there’s a lot of information given, many include lunch – plus you don’t have to take care of a single detail.

Below are two group tours we recommend:

  • Small Group Full Day Tour – Your go to three different Champagne houses, where you’ll try a variety of champagnes. There’s also an included three-course lunch along the way. (8 hours)  BOOK HERE
  • Reims Afternoon Tour to Epernay – Visit the UNESCO-listed Champagne Avenue in Epernay, the historic village of Hautvillers, and visit two Champagne houses for tastings. (4.5 hours)  BOOK HERE

Private Tour

If you don’t want to go along with a bunch of other people and you’d like to have some say in the schedule, then a private tour is the way to go. Here are two that we recommend (in case there’s not a lot of availability).

What’s Included:

  • First Visit – Explanation of the manufacturing process plus cave visit followed by a tasting of 3 Champagnes.
  • Visit Hautvillers, the village where Dom Pérignon created Champagne.
  • 3-Course Restaurant Lunch
  • 2nd & 3rd Visits – A Grand Cru cellar and cave followed by a tasting of 3 Champagnes at each

Tour is 8 hours, 2 people minimum. $375/pp

What’s included:

  • Return transport from Reims in a private shuttle (Mercedes Class V).
  • English-speaking driver/guide, Champagne expert
  • Visit & tasting at 2 Champagne houses
  • Guided tour of Reims Cathedral
  • Lunch reservation (payment not included)

Tour is 7 hours, 2 people minimum $599/pp

Self-Guided Tour

I usually prefer to do self-guided touring when I visit wine regions because it gives me the greatest flexibility and I actually really like researching and choosing the wineries I want to go to.

While there is a little more work involved because you have to set up all the tours yourself, there are tools that will help make this super easy. The one I use is called  Rue des Vignerons . It’s a French website that makes booking wine appointments super easy.

The site has 450 wineries and distilleries, both family-owned and famous houses, that includes 1,500 bookable experiences, including tastings, tours, workshops, and meals. You can book online up to 30 minutes before and your appointment is confirmed instantly. This is the website I used to book all of my Bordeaux tasting appointments.

In our descriptions below, I will give you links directly to Rue des Vignerons for each winery so you can easily book it.

7 Best Champagne Houses in Reims to Visit

1. champagne pommery.

Pommery

Location:  Place General Gouraud,  51100, Reims, France Hours: Early April to mid-November: every day 9:30am-7pm. Mid-November to late March: every day 10am-6pm Phone: +33(0)3.26.61.62.56 Email:   [email protected]

The Pommery Elizabethan-style estate was built in the 19th century by the lady of the house, Jeanne Pommery. It is one of the most archtecturally stunning estates you can visit today. Pommery is also one of the biggest Champagne house today, producing over 500,000 cases of Champagne a year.

You’ll definitely want to stop here for a tour to see the ancient Roman caves and art nouveau tasting rooms. The chalk cave cellars are equally impressive, and can be access from an incredible staircase worth seeing – it’s 116 steps down to the cellars!

Your tour will end with a tasting of one of the famous Pommery Champagnes. There are various tours you can take at Pommery. Be sure to book in advance.  The tours are given in English, French, and German.

  • “Art of Champagne” Caves – 22€-30€:  1 hour tour of the Gallo-Roman chalk cellars, with explanations of the history, wine development of Pommery, plus a visit to the contemporary art exhibit, followed by a tasting. Choice of 1 glass for 22€, cuvee experience for 26€ or 2 glasses for 30€.
  • Henry Vasnier’s Dream – 35€ 90 minute tour that follows the dream of Henry Vasnier, right arm man to Mrs. Pommery and patron of the City of Reims. Includes a visit of the Pommery Cellars and the Villa Demoiselle. Includes a 2-glass tasting.

2. Champagne Taittinger

Champagne Taittinger

Location:  À la table de Thibaud IV – Champagne Taittinger, 20 rue de Tambour, 51100 Reims

Another Champagne house with an impressive chalk cave that has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, Taittinger will stun you from the moment you arrive at the impressive entrance gates.

Unfortunately, their main location is currently closed, but you can still visit Demeure des Comtes de Champagne in the center of Reims and try the tasting experience called “À la table de Thibaud IV”.

The experience is meant to showcase the life of Thibaud the fourth, King of Navarre, who was also a poet, while tasting the two signature cuvées of the House: the Brut Réserve and the Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs.

It’s a mix of audio and tasting and is offered in English and French. The price is 60€ and it lasts about 1 hour.

#3 Champagne Lanson

Champagne Lanson

Champagne Lanson is the only big House located in the heart of Reims that offers a unique visit experience that takes you on a journey from the vine to the flute. Their tour guides you on a journey through the different stages of the wine making process, providing a truly immersive experience.

You’ll see the vineyards, then be guided to the “Clos Lanson”, then to the various places where the cuvees are made, passing through the cuveries and finally to the cellars. The tour will be followed by a tasting of the House’s emblematic cuvée: Le Black Création 257.

Tours lasts approximately 2 hours and are available in both English and French.

#4 G.H. Martel & Co

GH Martel & Co

Location:  17 rue des Creneaux, 51100, Reims, France Hours:  Daily 10am-1pm and 2pm-7pm. Tours in French and English until 5:30pm Phone: +33 (0) 3 26 82 70 67 Email: [email protected]

Located just around the corner from Veuve Clicquot and Taitttinger is another top Champagne house that offers tours and tastings: GH Martel & Co . This Champagne house also has a medieval chalk quarries, which was dug between the 4th and 15th centuries, and it is open to the public for tours.

As you descend into the cellar, at a depth of up to 22 meters, you’ll see their interesting collection of wine-making tools and machinery. The tour begins with a film, then leads you through the cellars and the ecomuseum, and then to their shop where you’ll taste 3 Champagnes.

They often have specials and deals available on their large range of wines, in case you’re looking for some steals to take back home with you. The tour and tasting takes about 1 hour. If you don’t have the time for a full tour, you can stop into the wine shop for a tasting at any time.

There are a few different flights to choose from ranging from 12-20€ Be sure to book your tour ahead of time by contacting the shop via phone or email.

#5 Champagne Mumm

GH Mumm

Location:  G.H. Mumm, 29 Rue du Champ de Mars, 51100 Reims, France Hours:  Daily 10am-1pm and 2pm-5:30 or 6pm, seasonally. Tours in French and English until 5:30pm Boutique available during opening hours Email: [email protected]

The House Mumm started in 1827 in the historic birthplace of the Champagne, Reims. This almost bicentenary estate opens the doors of its cellars where about 25 million bottles rest peacefully in the cellars.

The Mumm family, whose lineage includes barons and knights, dates back to the 12th century. They were originally wine merchants based in Cologne, Germany, but expanded into France when they saw potential for the region and expansion of their business. They’ve been going strong ever since.

Today Mumm is spread across nearly 25 kilometers in the heart of Reims. Visitors can explore the long history of this cellar and learn about the process they’ve followed for centuries.

There are three visit types: The Cordon Rouge Mumm experience, the discovery experience, and the 100% Grand Cru experience. The visit will end at one of the most beautiful museum about champagne. Afterward, you will have the opportunity to taste their Champagnes.

#6 Champagne Charles de Cazanove

Champagne Charles de Cazanove

Champagne Charles de Cazanove has been in business since 1811, and its production is 3 million bottles per year. It can be quite interesting visiting a large house like this to learn the Champagne making process. The facility was built in 2019, so it’s very modern.

You can book a tasting only, or embark on one of their three tours, which takes you to their production facility and give you an explanation of the process, along with a demonstration in their eco-museum.

The tour will be followed by a comparative tasting of 3 non-vintage Champagnes (2 whites and 1 rosé) or you can add on a vintage tasting as well.

#7 Champagne Pol Couronne

Pol Couronne

Champagne Pol Couronne was started in 2015. This family-owned champagne house, located in the historic city of Reims, offers a private tour and tasting in their showroom, so you can get an intimate look into the meticulous craft of champagne-making.

The personalized tastings here are exceptional. Your palate is in for a treat. Each sip allows you to taste the terroir, skill, and passion that go into making each bottle. Champagne Pol Couronne offers a tasting of 3 Champagnes, or 3 Grand Cru Champagnes

They also offer a Champagne masterclass and a sabering experience, if you’re looking for something more unique.

#8 Veuve Clicquot

Veuve Clicquot Champagne

Location: 1 Place des Droits de l’Homme, 51100 Reims, France Hours: Tuesday to Saturday 10am-5pm Phone:  +33 (0)3 26 89 53 90 Email: [email protected]

You’ve likely already heard of this Champagne brand, as it’s one of the most popular Champagnes being sold around the world. In case you’re thinking that means it’s not worth a visit to this Champagne house because it will be too touristy, we don’t think that’s an issue.

In fact, this was one of our favorite Champagne tours in Reims. The underground cellars of Veuve Clicquot might be one of the main reasons we love it here so much. The cellars are classified as a UNESCO World Heritage sight.

That’s not surprising when you learn that they’ve been making wine since 1772. In 1909, they bought these old underground quarrys to store their wine. There is some fascinating history in these caves, which you’ll learn all about during the tour.

After the tour of the cellar and facilities, you’ll have a chance to try the Champagne. There are a few different tickets you can purchase. Click here to see them all.

  • Discovery Tour – 26€:  45min tour followed by a single tasting of Yellow Label Brut 26€. This tour is available Tuesday to Saturday.
  • On the Footsteps of Madame Clicquot – 53€:  1 hr tour where you’ll learn all about Madame Clicquot, followed by a tasting of the Brut Yellow Label and prestige Cuvée La Grande Dame.
  • Veuve Clicquot & Rose Champagne – 40€: In 1818, Madame Clicquot was the first to make a rose champagne blend, which changed the landscape of Champagne for ever. Learn all about the Rose on this 45 min tour, followed by a tasting.

Other Champagne Houses Nearby

Not too far away from Reims, there are many more opportunities for Champagne tasting. If you’re going to be in the area, I would definitely recommend stopping by a few of these:

Pressoria is the brand new sensory interpretation center for champagne wines. Housed in the walls of a former Pommery pressing center in the commune of Aÿ, the immersive tour of this emblematic cultural site will help you rediscover champagne through your five senses.

Villa Signolle

A family-run business since 1802, they offer specialist champagnes for experts and amateurs alike. They do the harvesting, handling and winemaking of all their own grapes, from one of the best terroirs in the Champagne region. Their villa is on the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay. You can taste on their terrace or in the lounge, inside a house listed as a UNESCO heritage site.

Champagne Le Gallais

In 1927, Hachod Fringhian, the grandfather of Charlotte Morgain Le Gallais, obtained the Clos du Château de Boursault, which had long belonged to Madame Veuve Clicquot. Five generations later, Charlotte runs part of the estate: 7 parcels with their own characteristics, in the family vineyard, overlooking the Marne valley. The press, the cellars and the wine storehouses are also located in the clos, which guarantees a great freshness of the fruit at the time of its pressing and transformation.

How to Get from Paris to Reims

You can get to Reims from Paris by taking the TGV train. From anywhere in Paris, just get yourself to the East Railway Station. You can take the Paris subway to arrive at this station. This makes it very easy to visit Reims, no matter where in Europe you’re arriving from.

You don’t have to have tickets for the train in advance, but during busy times we do recommend buying them in advance to make sure you can get a seat. There have been times that the train has been full and we’ve had to take the next one. You can purchase tickets in advance on Trainline.com .

The train journey to Reims is only about 45 minutes. If you plan to go to Epernay – another of the nearby major Champagne cities – you can continue on from Reims on the TER train, which departs every 30 minutes and takes around 40 minutes to get there.

Descending into the Veuve Clicquot Chalk Caves

How to Get Around in Reims

One of the big questions that is often asked by tourists coming to Reims on a day trip from Paris is how to get around to the Champagne house. There are three convenient ways to get around. You can choose your method based on your own needs:

  • Walk: It’s actually quite easy to walk around Reims. The biggest hurtle is getting from the train station (or center of Reims) to the area where you find most of the Champagne houses. This is about a 2 mile walk (40 mins). If you don’t want to take this initial walk, you can take a quick Uber or taxi ride from the train station. We recommend starting at Veuve Clicquot, as it’s the furthest way from town (2 miles). To walk between any of the 5 Champagne houses mentioned, it will take you about 5 minutes or less.
  • Uber or Taxi: If you can’t or don’t want to walk, you can take an uber or taxi from the train station to any of the Champagne houses. Once you’re ready to go on to the next, you can call another Uber or taxi to take you there.
  • Rent a car: There is a convenient place near the train station to rent a car for the day. In fact, it’s just a few steps outside the door to the train station. It’ll cost around 40€ to rent a car for a day. We recommend using Expedia to book your rental car .

If you’re staying overnight in Reims, you’ll quickly learn that there isn’t a huge selection of hotels. We stayed at  Best Western Premier Hotel de la Paix . If you’re looking for a more luxury stay, try the  Chateau Les Crayeres .

⇒ Be sure to check out our list of the drinks you should try in France . There’s so much more to enjoy beyond the Champagne.

See the map below for directions to your Reims Champagne tours.

Once you’ve visited a few of these top Champagne tours in Reims, you’ll have a much better understanding of how Champagne is made and the history behind the industry and their unique stories.

It’s a great way to expand your knowledge of the craft and appreciate it even more than you probably already do. If you have a favorite Champagne house you want to share with our readers, leave us a comment!

Thank you so much for this perfect trip plan! Sooooo helpful 🙂

Glad you found it useful!

Thank you so much for your tips! Were there any bakeries nearby to grab a snack or light lunch between tastings? I seem to only be able to see these closer to the train yet am keen to do both Pommery & Veuve tastings (and will clearly needs some food between these!)

There are a few cheese shops and bakeries in town, but not right near the Champagne houses. I would recommend picking up some cheese, bread, pastries and taking them with you, so you don’t have to find something in between.

We’re planning an overnight in Reims next month – do you have any favorite places for dinner?

We really enjoyed L’Atelier and L’Alambic, which has a fun environment.

Are children (age 13) allowed on these tours? Thanks so much for the article! Very helpful.

Yes, they are allowed.

Do you have to book a tour or can you just show up and do a tasting? We are planning a day trip for Christmas Eve. We have a tour and tasting booked for Veuve Clicquot but wanted to be able to try one or two others without doing the tour.

For most places you need to book a tour. Not many just do tastings. However, if they do you would still likely need to make a reservation for Christmas Eve. Send them an email and ask what they offer. Veuve Clicquot is actually one that offers just tastings.

Great information, thank you for your detail! I’m planning a visit, but having trouble locating information for a tour at Laurent Perrier. Do you happen to know if they do tours?!

Hi Ashley, I think that tours may be closed to the public at this time. I couldn’t find any current tour information either.

We are considering doing some biking while visiting. Question…should we do Reims on foot one day and bike to Epernay day 2? Or, would a bike in the city be an asset or a hinderance? We wish to do lots of champagne tasting and plan on visiting both areas. We are only there two full days.

Melissa, I think a bike would be a great asset in both places. If only one day, I would bike around Reims and walk around Epernay, but you can definitely bike both. It’s about a 28-mile cycle between and easy roads.

Another nice address is Champagne Roger-Constant Lemaire, we tasted 4 our delicious champagnes and we plan to go back next year. They are situated in a village called Villers sous Châtillon between Reims and Epernay.

Fantastic! Thanks for the suggestion, Chris.

Two of us visited the Champagne house, we had a great visit. The guide was brilliant, spoke good English and explained the process of Champagne making. We had a great champagne tasting, very generous glasses and we were able to choose which wines to taste. It was fantastic value for what we got.

One Day in Reims – The Perfect Itinerary

  • By Jen Ciesielski
  • Updated: 4 December 2023
  • 10 December 2022

One day in Reims can be summed up in three words – champagne, coronations, and cathedrals. This charming town is part of the Champagne-Ardenne region of northeastern France, less than an hour from Paris. It’s the perfect day trip for anyone looking to indulge in history while sipping a glass of France’s finest wine. And if you’re visiting Paris in summer , one day in Reims is a must!

So, to help you plan your trip, I’ve put together the ultimate itinerary. This guide to spending one day in Reims includes famous sites like the Reims Cathedral, the Carnegie Library, and the Musée de la Reddition. But that’s not all! You’ll tour champagne houses and sample the best wines in the region. It’s a trip that will leave you amazed, impressed, and probably a little tipsy.

Map of One Day in Reims Itinerary

Below I’ve compiled the best things to do in Reims in one day. It’s a very packed itinerary. So, get ready to explore!

The city is small enough that you can visit everything on foot, but, if you prefer, there’s plenty of public transportation. It’s like one of the towns in Alsace , minus the half-timbered houses.

1. Marvel at the Reims Cathedral

The Exterior of the Exterior of the Reims Cathedral

Built in the 12th century, the Reims Cathedral (or the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims) is a masterpiece of stunning French Gothic architecture. It’s even considered one of the most beautiful churches in France !

At first glance, it’s easy to see why the kings of France were crowned here. The outside is adorned with intricate carvings that hold your gaze. Then, there’s the inside. The ceiling stretches to the heavens while the stained-glass windows bathe the altar in an ethereal light. And of all the magnificence, the rose windows are undoubtedly the most awe-inspiring.

In 1991, the Reims Cathedral was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So, if there’s one thing you must see while in town, this is it.

2. Tour the Musée de la Reddition

The Famous Map Room at the Musée de la Reddition

Located in the former Allied headquarters, the Musée de la Reddition tells the story of the German surrender at the end of World War II.

You’ll wander through a museum filled with photographs, documents, uniforms, and war replicas. There’s even a short documentary film (offered in French and English).

But the most moving of all the exhibits is the infamous ‘map room.’

You enter through a small corridor. The walls, of which, are covered in the original Allied strategic maps. As you turn left, your eyes follow the maps eventually arriving to a narrow wooden table. It was at this very place that Nazi Germany surrendered on 07 May 1945.

To date, it’s my favorite museum in the country, and this is coming from someone who has been living in France for a long time!

  • Wednesday – Monday: 10:00 am – 6:00 pm
  • Closed Tuesday

Address : 12 Rue du Président Franklin Roosevelt

3. Gaze at La Porte de Mars

View of La Porte de Mars

La Porte de Mars is one of four gates that served as an entrance to Reims during the Roman era. It dates to the third century and is said to be the widest arch ever built by the Romans.

This marvelous gate is at the northern entrance of the Les Hautes Promenades. So, if you’re spending one day in Reims, why not bring lunch, enjoy the scenery, and learn some history?

Address : Place de la République

4. Admire the Carnegie Library of Reims

The Carnegie Library of Reims is most noted for its Art Deco architecture. And, while the exterior has a modern feeling, the interior is rather cozy. The floors, walls, and bookcases are all made of wood. It actually looks like an old public library from the United States. Not only that but it has a whopping number of books. 400,000 to be exact!

Spend an hour wandering through the never-ending rows of books and admiring the beautiful architecture. You won’t be disappointed!

Address : 2 Place Carnegie

5. Visit Palais du Tau

A Selection of Tapestries at the Palais du Tau

The Palais du Tau is located in the former palace of the Bishop of Reims next to the Reims Cathedral. In the time of the French monarchy, it served as the banquet hall after the coronation ceremony. Today, it houses some of the most magnificent artifacts in French history. From tapestries to crowns, it’s an impressive collection, to say the least.

  • Tuesday – Sunday, Closed Monday
  • 6 May to 8 September: 9:30 am – 6:30 pm
  • 9 September to 5 May: 9:45 am – 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm – 5:15 pm

Address : 2 Place du Cardinal Luçon

6. Shop at Place Drouet d’Erlon

Wing of Victory at Place Drouet d'Erlon

If you love shopping, be sure to check out Place Drouet d’Erlon. This beautiful square is full of restaurants, bars, cafés, and shops. Then, in the center lies a statue topped with a golden Wing of Victory. Shop until you drop or enjoy the city unfold while enjoying an espresso on one of the many terraces.

Address : Place Drouet d’Erlon

7. Meander around Basilique Saint-Remi

The interior of Basilique Saint-Remi

It’s no secret that the Reims Cathedral is the main attraction, but Basilique Saint-Remi holds its own. Stone-carved statues on the outside of the church are nothing short of impressive. And the interior is just as beautiful. Here stained glass windows, dating back to the 12th century, light up the church. But that’s not all! Basilique Saint-Remi is where Saint Remi, himself, is buried.

As you walk around the church, detailed descriptions of the church’s history are offered in both French and English.

Address : Rue Saint-Julien

8. Explore the Musée Automobile Reims Champagne

For something a little different head to the Musée Automobile Reims Champagne.

This museum was opened in 1985 to display the car collection of Philippe Charbonneaux , a French automobile designer. But it has since grown to accommodate an even wider selection. Today, it holds not only some of the rarest cars in the world, but also racecars, motorcycles, and even some toy cars. It’s a unique experience, to say the least!

  • Wednesday – Monday, Closed Tuesday
  • 01 May to 31 October: 10:00 am – 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm
  • 01 November to 30 April: 10:00 am – 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Address : 84 Avenue Georges Clemenceau

9. Wander the Musée-Hôtel Le Vergeur

Beautiful Gardens at Musée-Hôtel Le Vergeur

Built in the 13th century, this once hotel, now, houses the work of Hugues Kraft. He was a French photographer from the 18th century who traveled the world taking photos and collecting souvenirs. But, over the years, the number of has increased, thanks to the support of various donors. One such donation included the etchings of Albrecht Dürer , a German artist from the late 14th century. You can visit the museum and the gardens, both of which come with a guide.

Useful Tip : If you don’t have time to take a tour of the museum, you can visit the gardens for free on your own.

Hours : Sunday – Saturday: 10:00 am – 12:00 and 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm

Address : 36 Place du Forum

10. Visit the Cryptoportique

The Forum with the Cryptoportique Hidden

Under the Forum square lies buried galleries called the cryptoportique or cryptoporticus. They date back to the first century and still remain intact. Archeologists suspect that they were most likely used as a covered market. But the exact use of these passageways remains a mystery. Tours are free and the galleries are open year-round.

Useful Tip : The Forum is in the center of Reims, but it’s easy to miss. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled!

Address : 6 Place du Forum

11. Admire Place Royale

The Statue of Louis XV at Place Royale

This royale square features a statue of Louis XV surrounded by beautiful stone buildings. It was inaugurated in 1765 and has since become a historical monument. It won’t take you more than a few minutes to visit Place Royale. But you can meander around the square, take in the views then stop in one of the many nearby shops.

Address : 5 Place Royale

12. Tour a Champagne House

G. H. Mumm Champagne

No trip to Reims is complete without sampling some champagne. After all, this is the region where it’s produced! There are tons of champagne houses spread across the city. They all offer visits that include a guided tour of their facilities and an overview of their production process. Then, at the end of the visit, you can sample three of their champagnes.

On average, tours cost €30 and last about an hour.

So, which ones should you visit?

Below are some of the best champagne houses to visit in Reims:

  • Mercier – Book your tour here .
  • Champagne Veuve Clicquot – Book your tour here .
  • Moët and Chandon – Book your tour here .

Book your Champagne Tasting Day Tour here ➔

Useful Tip : Champagne tours are very popular in Reims, so it’s best to book in advance.

13. Check Out the Foujita Chapel

The Foujita Chapel

The stunning Foujita Chapel is one of the most unsuspecting monuments in Reims. Built in 1966, this tiny chapel has a simple, less-than-impressive exterior. The inside, however, is anything but. Here magnificent murals painted by Tsuguharu Foujita, a Japanese artist, cover the walls of the church. Since he was a Catholic convert, most of the frescos depict religious scenes and figures from Catholicism.

If you’re looking for a truly unique experience, the Foujita Chapel should be at the top of your list.

Hours : The church is only open for visits from May to October.

Address : 33 Rue du Champ de Mars

Reims is full of fantastic restaurants and there is no shortage of options. Below are a few favorites:

  • Le Condorcet – An elegant brasserie with reasonable prices. They have a variety of dishes, including vegetarian options.
  • L’Alambic – Traditional French food served with style. Make sure to save room for dessert, their Crème brûlée is the best in town.
  • Harold Le Restaurant – A modern restaurant offering gourmet menus. But the true star of this show is their Sunday brunch. If you’re looking for something to do in Paris on Sunday, visit Reims and indulge in a delicious breakfast!

If you want to sample both Champagne and food from Reims, I highly recommend this tour .

Reims has an abundance of hotels for a range of budgets. Below are a few options:

  • Continental Hotel – Reims – Located in the center of Reims, this elegant hotel is a great place to stay. The staff is friendly and very helpful.
  • Hôtel Centre Reims – Best Western – A chain hotel, but the best budget option if you want to stay in the center of Reims.
  • Grand Hôtel des Templiers – Immaculate hotel with a delicious breakfast. It’s centrally located with spacious and comfortable rooms.
  • January to March – These are the coldest months of the year. It’s often raining and cloudy. Most outdoor attractions are also closed.
  • April to June – Late spring to early summer is a great time to visit Reims. The weather is perfect and the crowds have yet to arrive. Prices are also reasonable.
  • July to August – This is one of the worst times to visit Reims. Crowds and prices are at their highest.
  • September to November – Another great time to spend a day in Reims. The weather has cooled down and the summer crowds have dissipated. And, if you’re visiting in late October, you’ll be able to catch some wonderful fall colors.
  • December – This is the best time to visit if you’re in France for the Christmas markets and Reims won’t disappoint.

Trains run regularly from Paris to Reims and take about 50 minutes. The fastest trains leave from Gare de l’Est.

You can book and buy your train tickets online by clicking here .

Make sure to take the train to Reims and not to Champagne-Ardenne TGV. If you take the train to Champagne-Ardenne TGV, you will have to take another train to Reims. It will add 10-20 minutes to the trip.

Average Ticket Price from Gare de l’Est to Reims : €30

Information on Gare de l’Est in Paris :

  • Address : Rue du 8 Mai 1945
  • Metro Lines that Stop at Gare de l’Est : 4, 5, and 7

The Reims City Pass is another option that offers a bunch of discounts. It includes a select choice of guided tours, a transport pass, and a host of other cool things. Prices start at €20. You can purchase your 24-hour Reims City Pass by clicking here .

If you plan on spending more than one day in Reims, the 48-hour pass and the 72-hour pass are also available.

Is Reims Worth Visiting?

Reims is definitely worth visiting! The city is full of history , magnificent architecture, and fascinating museums. There is no shortage of things to do in Reims. It’s also a great addition to any eastern France itinerary. Plus, who can resist champagne?

Is Reims a walkable city?

Yes, Reims is a walkable city. The downtown area is very compact and most of the major attractions are not far from each other.

I explored the entire city on foot and found it very walkable. But if you need to use public transportation, buses and trams are available.

How much time do you need for Reims?

One day in Reims is the perfect amount of time. The city is small so it’s easy to see the main highlights as well as some unique attractions in one day. In fact, Reims is a great day trip from either Paris or Strasbourg.

Useful Tip : If you’re spending three days in Strasbourg , make sure to add Reims to your itinerary!

Which is better Reims or Rouen?

Reims and Rouen are both historic cities that are worth visiting. But if I had to choose one, I would pick Reims. It’s accessible from some of the most popular cities like Paris. Not only that but museums and attractions are phenomenal.

Is Champagne cheaper in Reims?

Champagne is not cheaper in Reims. But there is a way to save money. Many champagne houses have promotions. And, if you do a tour, they usually have a ‘buy six bottles get one free’ type of deal.

How is Reims pronounced in French?

Reims is pronounced “rance” in French. The “a” has a long nasally sound and the “ce” is said like an “s.” Another way to spell the pronunciation is “ra-s.”

Steeped in rich history and filled with jaw-dropping architecture, Reims is the perfect destination. The city is home to world-renowned museums and champagne, so what more can you ask for?

Spend the day touring cathedrals, indulging in history, and sipping some bubbly.

Make it a day trip or longer if you have more time. I recommend making a part of two week tour of the eastern part of France .

Either way, it’s guaranteed to be amazing. Make sure to use this guide to help plan your day in Reims!

  • 3 Best Reims Champagne Tours: Wine Traveler’s Guide

by Nichole | Last updated May 3, 2024 | Best Wine Europe , France

We love wine. My husband and I are far from wine experts but consider ourselves avid wine travelers. We are guilty of planning quite a few vacations exploring wine regions around the world. One of our favorite “winecations” was in the Champagne region of France. The city of Reims is a popular base to explore Champagne wine country. Let’s go through our top recommended Reims Champagne tours.

Isabelle, the founder of Aÿ-Champagne Experience , was our expert guide for a fantastic day of Champagne tasting. We enjoyed 3.5 hours of exceptional Champagne tasting with two independent wine producers: Joseph Desruets and Jean Milan.

In addition, we tried three local Champagne spirits at Goyard Distillers.

We also had the opportunity to visit the historic Saint-Sindulphe Church, the burial site of the famous “spiritual father of Champagne,” Dom Pierre Pérignon.

Don’t miss my full review of our tour with Aÿ Champagne Experience  if you want to know more!

An example of a Bike Wine Tour

Biking through world-class vineyards sipping on Champagne is just as romantic as it sounds. This is a fantastic way to discover the process of making Champagne.

Our first time biking and sipping wine was in Burgundy . We are hooked and hope to do more of these experiences in the future!

We did not have the opportunity to do this specific tour, but because of our fantastic Burgundy bike tour I wanted to include this tour as an option.

A La Francaise Champagne  clearly delivers an exceptional experience, which is evident from their stellar reviews.

They offer convenient pickup from Reims or Epernay. You’ll E-bike to the town of Hautvillers and visit the church where Dom Pérignon is buried.

Saint-Sindulphe Church in the town of Hautvillers

Then you get to cycle the scenic Marne Canal until you reach Le Clos Corbier for your Champagne tasting. The total distance is around 19 miles.

We passed by the Marne Canal one evening on our way to dinner at Chez Max , and it’s beautiful!

Marne Canal

After the wine tasting, then it’s time for a relaxed lunch of French homemade regional specialties.

Champagne region in France

I strongly recommend staying in the Champagne region and sipping your way through several glorious days of French wine country. We did it this way and loved it.

But if you are short on time, joining a reputable Champagne tour from Paris will at least give you a taste of what it’s all about.

The highly-rated wine tour company, My Winedays , makes visiting the Champagne region from Paris a breeze.

They offer pickup from your hotel in Paris and chauffeur you to Champagne for a day of multiple (8 to be exact!) tastings from both large and smaller wine producers. Lunch (with, of course, more Champagne) is also included.

Walking downstairs into the chalk cellars at Ruinart Champagne House

Visiting the smaller Champagne producers is best done with an organized tour as described above. However, if you are looking to visit one of the big Champagne houses in Reims, it is easy to do it on your own .

On our French wine country retreat, we dedicated one day with Aÿ Champagne Experience, as previously mentioned, and another day to exploring Ruinart independently.

There are several big Champagne houses to choose from including Pommery, Taittinger, and Veuve Clicquot. The House of Ruinart though is known for providing one of the BEST Champagne tours for its guests.

Ruinart is credited as the first established Champagne house in 1729.

One of the unique features of the tour is a visit to the ancient chalk cellars, which is a UNESCO world heritage site. These 40-meter deep cellars are still used to this day to store all those beautiful bottles of Champagne.

Ruinart chalk cellars

During our 2-hour tour, we witnessed the bottling process and a really cool art show. Ruinart is known for its close ties with contemporary art and continues to commission artists to convey their perspective on its heritage.

Of course, they save the best for last. At the end of our cellar tour, we enjoyed a tasting of two signature cuvées from their uniquely shaped bottles.

Book in advance! Reservations go quickly.

If you are looking for more Champagne houses to visit independently that provide a tour in English, do not miss my 9 favorite houses !

Ruinart wine tasting

After our Ruinart Champagne tour, we kept the fun going with a visit to one of the coolest wine shops I have ever been to, Club Trésors de Champagne . This wine club started in 1971 and consists of 24 of the best wine estates in Champagne.

This wine shop is particularly known for its Spécial Club wines. These prestigious wines are produced by one of the Club Members and selected by independent wine experts for their high quality.

Trésors de Champagne wine shop

The staff was so friendly and walked us through an exceptional Champagne tasting of six different producers. We enjoyed the Champagne so much that we ordered a case to be shipped back home.

Trésors de Champagne wine tasting

We love Champagne. Hearing that bottle pop and sipping on those tiny little bubbles just makes me happy. If you are traveling to France, do not miss a trip to learn more about this truly special wine. I hope sharing who runs the best Champagne tours gets you well on your way to planning your next trip to France.

À votre santé!

And if you are starting in Paris before you wine getaway, don’t miss my 36 hours in Paris !

“Best Champagne Host Ever!”

What a fantastic day!! I can recommend Gwendal very highly. We have been to many wine regions around the world and have used many guides/drivers. Gwendal is as good as it gets. He is very knowledgeable and a most courteous host. Boom him with confidence.

Phenomenal experience!

This was a top-notch, must-do experience for us! I love sparkling wine and Gwendal made this such an educational and memorable experience. Everything was fabulous, from the selection of Champagne houses to give us a lot of variety, to the phenomenal lunch at the Garden, to Gwendal’s ability to teach us all about the region and history. Wow! That’s really all I can say.

Gevondyan_H

The very best!

I can’t say enough about this tour. Gwendal, our guide was delightful! And he was so informative. We learned so much about the Cathedral and the surrounding area. He provided great background information on the two wineries, before we took the tours. And he showed us interesting points of the church where Dom Perigon is buried. I would do a tour with Gwendal again, anytime. A fabulous day! Thank you Gwendal!!

“Unforgettable champagne tour services five stars.”

We were recommended by our hotel concierge service, a full day to discover the champagne region, it was a good choice for an escape from Paris. The trip was tailor-made with our favorite champagne. Our driver-guide was amazing, five star services, I highly recommend his services.

9 Top Champagne Houses in Reims You’ll Love

By: Author Amanda OBrien

Posted on Last updated: 16/02/2024

If you’re a fan of champagne, then you’ll definitely want to visit the Champagne region of France. One of the best places to experience the magic of champagne is in the city of Reims, where you can visit some of the most famous champagne houses in the world. From Veuve Clicquot to Pommery to Taittinger, there are plenty of options to choose from.

Each of the champagne houses in Reims has its own unique history and style, and visiting them is a great way to learn more about the art of champagne-making. Many of the houses offer tours of their wine cellars and vineyards as well as a self-guided tour and tastings, where you can sample some of their best vintages and learn about the different grapes (chardonnay, pinot noir, pinot Meunier) and production methods used to create each bottle. Group tours are often available if booked ahead of time.

Plus there are loads of fantastic  things to do in beautiful Reims.

Getting to Reims and Getting Around

Reims train station is on the high-speed TGV train line to Paris and it takes just over one hour to get between the two. Champagne’s second largest town, Epernay, is on the same train line. Trains between Epernay and Reims run roughly once an hour and take about 20 minutes.

reims cathedral

The train stations for both Epernay and Reims are only a short walk from the town centers, so train travel is a great option to get between the two towns.

Many  visiting the champagne region  choose to stay in Reims as it is the largest city and a beautiful medieval town. I’ve written a detailed article about the  best hotels in Reims . However, nearby Epernay also has some  good hotel options . Personally, I chose to stay in Reims for both of my visits to Champagne and have then visited Epernay by train.

epernay balloon

By car, Reims is easily accessible via well-maintained highways. Take the A4 motorway from Paris east towards Reims and follow the signs.

I also used uber during my stay and I generally didn’t have to wait too long for rides. However, Uber availability and costs can fluctuate extensively.

Once you arrive in Reims it is relatively easy to get around on foot. As you will see in my article, three Champagne houses are essentially located in the town center. Five of the most famous Champagne houses in Reims are located near each other about a 25 minute walk from the town center. Or an easy uber ride which is what I did.

reims fountain

If it is a special occasion you might want to look at private tours like  hiring your own guide/driver  to take you around Reims.

It is also very easy to visit Reims as a day trip to Paris. Book your train tickets and champagne tastings or go on one of these  organised day trips from Paris to Champagne.

Champagne Houses in the Centre of Reims

Three Champagne houses are located within a 15 minute walk of Reims station. This makes them great options if you only visit Reims as a  day trip from Paris.

1. Charles de Cazanove (6 minute walk from Reims station)

Charles de Cazanove  is a Champagne house that was founded in 1811. This was my favourite tasting experience and my favourite Champagne when I visited Reims. The brand was a traditional history but it has also experimented quite a bit over the year.

The house itself has a cellar etc for tours but there is also a bar where you can book a tasting or just walk in and grab a tasting or a drink. The bar feels ornate but very comfortable.

cazanove

In my opinion, this was also one of the best value Champagne tasting options in Reims.

The  Pommery  estate became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015, and this pastel castle is certainly one of the most impressive-looking champagne houses. Pommery reims

Today Champagne Pommery has a rich history and is home to over 18 kilometers of cellars and chalk pits as well as Les Clos Pompadour, 25 hectares of walled vineyard within the estate.

And across the river in Reims on its own is Champagne Lanson.

Lanson  is a Champagne house that was founded in 1760 and is one of the oldest champagne houses in the region. A time corridor takes visitors through some of Lanson’s highlights, from Napoleon spending the night at the estate to a royal warrant from Queen Victoria, which has been in place since 1900.

Lanson

The tour covers some actual vines on the property, the stainless steel tanks containing current first fermentations, the barrel room and, best of all, the stunning cellars.

Lanson

The cellars cover an area of 7 kilometers and contain 25 million bottles of champagne kept at 90% humidity. They are very atmospheric (and photogenic) with their golden glow. There is even a Paradis Lanson in the cellars, which contains their best champagnes.

There are 4 tasting options:

  • Tour and one glass of champagne
  • Tour and tasting of two champagne cuvees
  • Tour and tasting of three champagnes

In the 4th century, the chalk pits were patiently dug out to extract blocks of chalk. 900 years later they would become the basement of Saint-Nicaise Abbey. They were then extended by a network of tunnels linking cellars, crypts and vaults used for storing the champagne wines sold by the Benedictine monks. The Abbey was destroyed during the French Revolution, but its underground structures remained intact. Owned by Maison Taittinger and used for coaxing the very best out of its most precious wines 18 metres underground, the site welcomes numerous visitors year round, who come to marvel at these stunning remnants of the Gothic style in the champagne region.

Set your imagination back in time to pre-Revolution France, when French kings were coronated at the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims. The spacious Place du Cardinal Luçon facing the cathedral provided room for jubilant crowds to gather and greet the king after his anointment ceremony within the high-vaulted sanctuary.

Reims Cathedral

Thanks to this heritage, Reims is listed as one of the country's Villes d'Art et d'Histoire (Cities of Art and History) and ranks among the top tourist destinations in the Champagne region .

A world of cultural discoveries awaits you in Reims. While wandering the city's tree-lined streets and cobblestone lanes, you will come across impressive landmarks and elegant public squares.

In between sightseeing, you may stop at one of the city's many stylish restaurants. Reims boasts three UNESCO World Heritage Sites and four Michelin-starred dining rooms.

There's plenty to see on a quick day trip from Paris (less than one hour away by TGV train) and enough to keep you entertained for a longer stay.

Although Reims was damaged during the First and Second World Wars, the town has been marvelously rebuilt, and many of the newer buildings were designed in a lovely Art Deco style.

Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims

The Cathedral of Notre-Dame stands proudly in the center of Reims with its soaring towers visible from a distance. One of France's finest cathedrals, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is considered a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.

The magnificent 13th-century edifice features a richly adorned facade resembling lacework, and boasts over 2,000 statues. Three ornate doorways grace the west front of the cathedral, with a rose window over the central doorway. Above this is the iconic Gallery of Kings , a long row of statues set in niches. The sculpture on the central doorway depicts the life of the Virgin.

One amusing feature of the facade is the Sourire de Reims ( Smiling Angel ) statue.

Upon entering the sanctuary, you will be dazzled by the enormity of the space. The vast nave has an ambience of solemnity and yet a surprising luminous quality, as it is illuminated by an abundance of stained-glass windows. Three stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall and nine by the German artist Imi Knoebel have added a modern touch to the cathedral.

Interior of Cathedral of Notre-Dame

Reims' cathedral enjoys a very special position in French history. Similar to Westminster Abbey in London, the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims was used for the monarchy's coronation ceremonies (for more than eight centuries).

Joan of Arc accompanied Charles VII here in July of 1429 for his coronation. She appears in an equestrian statue on the square in front of the cathedral.

Today, the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims is open year-round daily, from 7:30am until 7:30pm. You may visit independently or take a guided tour (available in English). Access is also allowed to the cathedral towers.

Note: The Palais du Tau is currently undergoing renovations and will be closed until 2025.

Discover the majestic accommodations where the kings of France resided in Reims during coronation ceremonies. In these splendid surroundings, it's easy to imagine the grandeur of past royal events.

Adjoining the cathedral, the UNESCO-listed Palais du Tau reveals the French Neoclassical style of the 17th century. However, the building dates to a much earlier period and has several perfectly preserved medieval rooms.

The Salle de Tau , the banquet hall used after coronation ceremonies, is adorned with exquisite 15th-century Arras tapestries. These tapestries present the story of the legendary King Clovis.

Within the palace's 13th-century Chapelle Palatine , a treasury contains remarkable items, including the 9th-century talisman of Charlemagne and the 12th-century chalice of Saint Rémi.

Address: 2 Place du Cardinal Luçon, Reims

Basilique Saint-Rémi

The oldest church in Reims, the Basilique Saint-Rémi is an exceptional Romanesque monument and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site . The church was built between 1005 and 1049 (for a Benedictine abbey) on the site of an 8th-century Carolingian chapel, which drew many pilgrims.

Although the exterior is Gothic, the interior still has elements of the original Romanesque structure. The harmonious 11th-century nave is illuminated by 12th-century stained-glass windows, giving the sanctuary a warm and ethereal ambience, while the choir and surrounding chapels exemplify a serene Early Gothic style.

The church houses the tomb of Saint Rémi (440-533), which has made this basilica a place of veneration since the 8th century.

During the Hundred Years' War, the abbey fell into decline and was later revived during the Renaissance. During the French Revolution, the monks were expelled, and the basilica was converted into a parish church. The First World War caused damage to the building, which took forty years to repair.

Today, the Basilique Saint-Rémi is open year-round daily, except on Sunday mornings. Occasionally the church is used as a venue for music concerts.

Address: Place Chanoine Ladame, Reims

Place Royale

Most likely, the first square you will see in Reims city center is the Place Cardinal Luçon , where the cathedral, the Palais de Justice (Law Courts), and a bronze Joan of Arc statue are located.

Also a must-see attraction, the expansive Place de la République boasts a well-manicured park space and an imposing 3rd-century Roman triumphal arch, the Porte de Mars , which served as a town gate until 1544.

South of the Place de la République is the Hôtel de Ville (Town Hall), constructed between 1627 and 1630.

Another well-preserved 3rd-century Roman monument is the Cryptoportique , found at the Place du Forum . This archaeological site is used as a venue for summertime music concerts.

A happening area of Reims is the Place Drouet d'Erlon , a pleasant tree-lined square with many bustling brasseries and restaurants. Dining at an outdoor terrace on this square is one of the most enjoyable things to do in Reims.

At the southern end of the Place Drouet d'Erlon stands the second oldest church in Reims, the Eglise Saint-Jacques , which dates from the 12th to 16th centuries.

The most elegant square in Reims is the Place Royale lined with handsome Neoclassical buildings. A bronze statue of King Louis XV stands at the center of the square.

Musée des Beaux-Arts

Note: The Musée des Beaux-Arts is currently closed due to a renovation project. The museum is expected to reopen in 2025.

Reims has an excellent fine arts museum, as you would expect from a Ville d'Art et d'Histoire . The museum contains masterpieces of French and European paintings, from the Renaissance period until the Art Déco movement of the modern era.

Highlights at the Musée des Beaux-Arts include religious art; 19th-century landscape paintings (including many pieces by Camille Corot); and Impressionist paintings by famous artists such as Monet, Renoir, and Pissarro.

Address: 8 Rue Chanzy, Reims

Musée Saint-Rémi

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site , the former Saint-Rémi Royal Abbey is a gem of Neoclassical architecture. This building had an important purpose: guarding the Holy Ampulla (sacred ointment) that was used to anoint kings during coronation ceremonies.

The Saint-Rémi Royal Abbey building now houses the Musée Saint-Rémi , with collections devoted to local history until the Renaissance era; the history of the abbey's buildings; the military history of France, from ancient times until the 19th century; and Gallo-Roman antiquities from the ancient city of Durocortorum (present-day Reims).

This museum is one of the best places to visit to learn about the history of Reims. The museum is open year-round daily, except Mondays. Museum hours are 10am until 6pm.

Address: 53 Rue Simon, Reims

Musée Hôtel Le Vergeur

The Musée Hôtel Le Vergeur displays a unique collection in a hôtel particulier (mansion), listed as a Monument Historique . The Hôtel Le Vergeur takes its name from the wealthy Vergeur family who owned the house until the 16th century.

The most recent owner of the Hôtel Le Vergeur, Hugues Krafft, devoted much of his fortune to restoring the house. He decorated the rooms with splendid furniture and created an art collection consisting of objects brought back from his many trips abroad.

Today, the museum displays Krafft's decorative arts collection, as well as an eclectic assortment of prints and paintings that illustrate the history of Reims; objects that were part of royal coronations; and exceptional pieces of religious art, most notably the engravings by Albrecht Dürer.

The museum is open year-round daily, except Mondays and national holidays (January 1st, May 1st, November 1st, and December 25th). Hours are from 10am until 12 noon and 2pm until 6pm.

Address: 36 Place du Forum, Reims

Chapelle Foujita

The Japanese artist of the Ecole de Paris, Tsuguharu Foujita was so inspired by a visit to the Basilique Saint-Rémi that he decided to convert to Christianity. His baptism took place on October 14, 1959 at the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims, and he received the baptismal name, Léonard.

In 1965, with a single-minded artistic vision, Leonard Foujita built his very own chapel in Reims. The Chapelle Foujita was designed entirely by Foujita, from start to finish. He oversaw the architectural plans, designed the sketches for the ironwork and stained-glass windows, and next he painted the frescoes in the chapel's choir.

Foujita chose the Romanesque style for the chapel because it recalls the Saint-Rémi Basilica and because its simple structure would be ideal for displaying his artistic creation. Foujita's sense of spirituality shines in each scene of his monumental work adorning the chapel.

Listed as a Monument Historique , the Chapelle Foujita is open to the public as a museum. You may visit from May through September every day except Tuesdays. Hours are 10am until 12pm and 2pm until 6pm.

Address: 33 Rue du Champ de Mars, Reims

Joan of Arc Festival (Les Fêtes Johanniques)

Every year in spring or early summer (dates vary), Reims transforms itself into the scene of a medieval celebration for Les Fêtes Johanniques , the Joan of Arc Festival. The two-day festival reenacts the Saint's arrival in Reims for the coronation of King Charles VII at the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims.

Les Fêtes Johanniques commemorates this pivotal event in French history (which took place on July 17, 1429) with musical and dance performances, artisans' ateliers (such as calligraphy and weaving workshops), falcon presentations, and street theater. Town residents dress up in period costumes to follow "Joan of Arc" and "King Charles VII" in a Grand Coronation procession to the Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Another lively cultural event is Les Sacres du Folklore , which brings together folk singers, musicians, and dancers from across the globe. The festival takes place for several days in June or July and features dance performances, music concerts, and a gala event.

Musée de la Reddition (Museum of the Surrender)

The Musée de la Reddition (Museum of the Surrender) is dedicated to the remembrance of the Second World War. The museum occupies a Monument Historique , the building where General Eisenhower's headquarters were located during the war.

Most importantly, this building is where the German General Jodl announced the surrender of the Third Reich's armed forces on May 7, 1945, ending the war. The news was then announced simultaneously in the Allied capitals on May 8, 1945.

Exhibits show the role of Reims during the Second World War. From Occupation to Liberation, the story of the war is told through objects, documents, memorabilia, and models. The museum also presents interesting information about the French Resistance.

The museum is open year-round daily, from 10am until 6pm.

Reims's piece de resistance is certainly that indomitable Cathedral of Notre-Dame. A medley of square-cut Romanesque towers and spiked turrets, glimmering golden filigrees and Gothic flying buttresses, it's arguably the most important church in all of France. It was here that countless French kings have been apotheosized and crowned, elevating Reims itself to the position of one of Europe's most prestigious religious-political centers for much of the Middle Ages. In more recent centuries, this town of Grand Est, some 2.5 hours south of Calais, has been drawing in devoted pilgrims, history buffs and lovers of architecture with its jaw-dropping medley of buildings: the UNESCO-tagged Palace of Tau (just check out the holy relics within); the crumbling Roman remains of the Porte de Mars; the handsome faces of the Saint Remi Basilica. Acclaimed institutions like the Museum of the Surrender (dedicated to the strife of WWII) are also worthy stops, while Reims tour guides are available for jaunts out to the famous region of Champagne, where cellar doors froth and bubble with France's most iconic wine.
