Genting Dream Cruise Penang Shore Excursion • Panoramic View of Penang Bespoke Journey

Genting dream penang shore excursion.

The second port of call on the 6 Day 5 Night cruise on Resorts World Cruises’ Genting Dream is Penang. Shore excursions are available by Resorts World Cruises to explore the different ports of calls on destination cruises. For this trip, I had the privilege to try out a shore excursion on the best of Penang arranged by Resorts World Cruises.

Genting Dream Penang Shore Excursions

Penang Island Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT)

The Genting Dream arrived at Penang Island Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) at about 6am on Tuesday after departing from Port Klang at about 4pm.

Genting Dream Zodiac Theatre Meeting Point

penang dream cruise port

For passengers who have booked shore excursions, the meeting point for Penang shore excursions was at Zodiac Theatre. However, check on your day of departure on the meeting point as this may be changed depending on the crowd.

penang dream cruise port

A sticker is provided to identify passengers based on buses. Stick it on your shirt visible to staff along the way out and throughout the shore excursion.

For passengers who have booked shore excursions, buses are on standby inside Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT). Do not follow the route out to the Jubilee Clock Tower.

Penang Hill Railway

penang dream cruise port

The first stop on my Genting Dream Penang Shore Excursion was Penang Hill Railway to ascend up Penang Hill.

penang dream cruise port

Resorts World Genting provided Fast Lane tickets for this shore excursion. If you book the Penang Highlights Tour on board Genting Dream, Fast Lane tickets are also included for your shore excursion.

penang dream cruise port

The Penang Hill Railway funicular train arrived almost as soon as our group entered the Fast Lane queue, but there was a bit of a wait for the line to open as the was running at a 30-minute frequency.

Boarding the front cabin on the Penang Hill Railway funicular train with the Fast Lane priority boarding.

penang dream cruise port

After boarding and the doors were shut, there was still a wait of about 5 minutes for the scheduled departure time of 9.30am.

Penang Hill

The tour guide led the group on a short walk around the peak of Penang Hill, showcasing the various buildings and the view down below.

Once done with the short walk around Penang Hill, it was time to quickly head back down as well with the rain and tight itinerary.

The Fast Lane means I get a front view again on the lowest-most cabin.

Penang Road Famous Chendol & Char Kway Teow

penang dream cruise port

Lunch was served at Penang Road Famous Chendol and Char Kway Teow.

penang dream cruise port

This coffee shop was crowded even on a weekday morning with the local crowd and other free and easy Genting Dream passengers making their way here by themselves from the ship.

penang dream cruise port

The Penang Road Famous Chendol and Char Kway Teow were served for lunch.

penang dream cruise port

Resorts World Cruises also added on an Oyster Omelette to share, which was nice of them.

THE TOP Penang

penang dream cruise port

Following lunch, the group adjourned over to KOMTAR for THE TOP Penang.

Level 65 Observatory Deck

penang dream cruise port

The journey to and through THE TOP Penang began with the theatre showcasing the making of The Top.

Following the video presentation, the side door opened to enter the Level 65 Observatory Deck.

penang dream cruise port

There was a queue for the shuttle lift to the Level 68 Observatory Deck with other arriving passengers on the Discover Penang like a Local shore excursion and free and easy guests as well. There is only 1 shuttle lift available.

Level 68 Rainbow Skywalk

Heading out to the Level 68 Rainbow Skywalk.

A lift transfer is required at Level 65 from the shuttle lift to the other lift back down to the 6th floor.

penang dream cruise port

There are supposed to be 2 lifts serving from Level 6 to 65, but 1 of it was under maintenance.

The Bespoke Journey itinerary was on schedule up to the trip to THE TOP Penang where the waiting time for the lifts for 4 times delayed the timings.

1st Avenue Penang

penang dream cruise port

Following the visit to THE TOP Penang, the group adjourned to 1st Avenue Penang for some free and easy shopping time.

“Little Children on a Bicycle” Mural

penang dream cruise port

Before heading back to the ship, the tour bus made a brief stop at the famous “Little Children on a Bicycle” Mural on Armenian Street.

penang dream cruise port

“Little Children on a Bicycle” was created in 2012 for the George Town Festival and is probably the most popular mural in Penang for photography.

Back to Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT)

penang dream cruise port

There was a bit of a jam both in traffic and humans at Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) as the Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas had also just arrived. A bit of jostling was needed between Resorts World Cruises’ and Royal Caribbean’s guests at Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) which looked unprepared to handle 2 cruise ships.

penang dream cruise port

The path for cruise passengers is different from  Penang Fast Ferry passengers, with barricades separating the 2.

The Penang Bespoke Journey customised tour by Resorts World Cruises maximised the port time available in Penang to showcase the best that Penang has to offer. Penang has the advantage of a direct downtown port, but with the usual queues and traffic jams of Penang, time was still a little bit limited due to waiting in lines or traffic, but it was still a fulfilling shore excursion nonetheless which thankfully ended in time to return back to the ship.

This cruise was kindly sponsored by Resorts World Cruises.

About Cruising to Penang

Penang, a 111-square-mile island off the west coast of Malaysia, gets its name from the betel nut tree, called " pinang " in Malaysian. While some residents still chew betel nuts, you'll probably be more interested in sinking your teeth into the astonishing variety of foods available in this culinary capital. Add in the historic architecture that boosted port city George Town onto UNESCO's World Heritage list, plus the rich blend of cultures, and Penang makes for a rewarding destination.

Located at the northern entry to the Strait of Malacca, the island was used for centuries as a safe harbor for traders from China, India, Arabia and Europe. British Captain Francis Light arranged to have Penang ceded by the Sultan of Kedah to the British East India Company in 1786 in return for promised military protection. With the construction of Fort Cornwallis and the founding of George Town (named after King George III), Penang became Britain's first stronghold in Southeast Asia. Trade flourished -- including rubber, tin and opium -- and attracted fortune-seekers from around the world. The island was captured by the Japanese in World War II and became part of the independent state of Malaysia in 1957.

Today, the population of the state of Penang (which, in addition to the island, also includes a slice of the mainland) totals about 1.75 million; George Town's population is about 738,000, primarily ethnic Chinese, followed by Malays and Indians. The Peranakans, also known as Straits-born Chinese, represent a distinct subculture. In the past, Chinese traders married Malay women, and the blending of the cultures created hybrid customs, foods and dress.

Penang's melting pot of cultures contributes to its fascinating food scene, as well as to its many places of worship, including Hindu temples, Muslim mosques and colonial-era Christian churches. Now, UNESCO recognition has brought a new influx of tourists. George Town's crumbling " shophouses " are being rehabbed into boutique hotels, while outside the city, shopping malls and luxury housing have sprung up along beaches.

The cruise season is fairly well timed to coincide with Penang's drier months of January and February. The equatorial climate keeps it hot year-round (74 to 90 degrees) with fierce sun, so plan accordingly when heading ashore. Look for Penang in our Malaysia cruise itinerary .

A historic melting-pot of cultures, with UNESCO World Heritage status

It's usually very hot here, year-round

It's worth braving the heat to explore and taste some truly great food

Ships dock at Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal, located on the northeast tip of George Town, within walking distance of many attractions. The building opened in 2009 and can handle the largest ships; unfortunately, it features little that's of interest for travelers, aside from restrooms and Wi-Fi. Maps of George Town and surrounding areas are available near the terminal exit, where a flurry of persistent taxi drivers wave brochures.

Central George Town, with its UNESCO World Heritage area, museums, covered market, street food vendors and ethnic neighborhoods, is within walking distance of the pier. But if you don't want to hoof it in the heat, hopping aboard a trishaw is also an option.

Good to Know?

Traffic moves on the left side of the street, British-style. Be very cautious, and look to the right when crossing the street.

George Town is generally quite safe, but petty crimes like purse-snatching and pickpocketing sometimes occur. Just use caution in crowds, and carry your purse on the side of your body that is away from the street.

Take precautions to protect yourself from sun and heat, which can be exhausting. Sunblock and a hat or an umbrella are essential. Take frequent breaks if you're walking, cool off in an air-conditioned shop now and then, and drink plenty of fluids.

The water in Penang is safe to drink, and hygiene among street food vendors is of a higher standard than most places in Asia. We dined on a variety of street foods with no problem.

Getting Around?

On Foot: George Town is flat, and most streets have sidewalks -- though they may be obstructed by shop merchandise. The older parts of town have arcaded buildings that shadow the sidewalks (called gor kha lor or "5-foot ways"), but sidewalk height can go up or down, with a step or two, from building to building. If you decide to walk, there's something of interest hiding in nearly every little alley.

By Taxi: Taxis are plentiful and relatively inexpensive. If you like to tour independently and want to see attractions outside George Town, you might choose to negotiate a ride for the day. Drivers are supposed to use the meter but often refuse or say it's broken. In that case, settle on a fixed fee before you get in and they step on the gas. GrabTaxi is a local taxi-calling app you can use if you have cellphone service.

By Trishaw: A few of these human-powered taxis still ply George Town, and the same rule goes as for them as for taxis -- negotiate. You'll get the best deal if you hire one for an hour or longer.

By Bus: Rapid Penang operates many buses in George Town and around the island. The company has a handy guide on its website listing points of interest and which bus to take to get there. Rapid Penang also operates the free CAT (Central Area Transit) Bus, a shuttle that runs within George Town, serving local attractions. Buses operate every 15 minutes, from 6 a.m. to 11:45 p.m.; look for Rapid Penang buses with a "Free CAT Bus" sign.

By Hop-On Hop-Off Bus: These tourist buses cover two different routes -- City (every 20 to 30 minutes, with a stop at the cruise terminal) and Beach (every hour and 15 minutes); both run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. You can buy a 24-hour or 48-hour pass.

By Bike: George Town has a bike-share program called Link Bike . Sign up in advance, and you can get a day pass for a very reasonable rate. (Day passes let you ride for free in 30-minute increments throughout the day, with charges only if one biking session stretches beyond the allotted half-hour.) There are bike stations within a couple of blocks of the port. You'll need a smartphone and cell service to be able to operate the system.

Currency & Best Way to Get Money?

Currency in Penang is the Malaysian ringgit. Visit www.xe.com for current rates. There are no ATMs or money-changing facilities at the cruise terminal, but there are many banks with ATMs nearby; you'll run into several if you head down either Lebuh Pantai or Lebuh Light. (Both streets intersect with the large traffic circle you'll see just down the road from the terminal.)

The official language of Penang is Malay. Most locals you'll encounter speak at least some English -- and many are fluent, thanks to Penang's past as a British colony. You might also hear a mix of Malay and English (with a mashup of Hokkien, Mandarin, Cantonese and Tamil words, as well), referred to as "Manglish."

When reading a map, it's helpful to know that "jalan," "lebuh" and "lorong" are all words for "street" (depending on size), and you'll see both those and English terms used on signs. Some streets are also double-named, with an old British name, as well as a newer Malay name.

Please note that Georgetown has rather under developed footpaths. Some streets do not have footpaths at all. Pedestrians should be advised to pay attention to traffic when walking through the city.

Penang’s cruise taxis

The official taxis of Penang are red and blue coloured. Blue coloured taxis are the newer taxis and therefore they cost a bit more. Taxis in Penang do not have a meter, therefore you need to negotiate with the driver before stepping in. Please know the taxi prices are on display in the port area. Expect the following taxi prices: To Kek Lok Si Temple, both ways: 150 RM Around 50 RM per hour per taxi (with a minimum of 3 hours) Between 80 and 120 per hour per van (with a minimum of 3 hours)

Penang’s trishaws

Alternatively to taxis you can also go around by trishaw. This is a great way to get to nearby places in town. Negotiate a price before you head off. Expect to pay between 35 and 50 RM per hour.

Penang’s public transportation for cruise passengers

The local transportation in Georgetown is rather good. Komtar is the main bus station (see marked in the map above). From here you can take buses all over the island. Bus line 201, 204 stops near the exit of the cruise terminal. Catch one of these busses to go to Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si Temple.

There is no wi-fi available at the cruise port. However you can find lots of coffee places in town to connect to wi-fi when you buy a cup of coffee. Try white coffee at church street of Subway for example.

Monthly Climate Averages for Penang Malaysia

Sightseeing:

Penang (Malay: Pulau Pinang) is an island off the northern part of the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It is also the name of the Malaysian state which is made up of Penang Island and the facing strip of territory on the mainland called Seberang Perai (formerly Province Wellesley).

Penang is one of Malaysia's main tourist draws. Its beaches are a little lackluster when compared with those in some other Malaysian states, but this is more than compensated by the island's rich multicultural history which is full of colonial and Chinese influences. Penang is also well known for being the "food paradise" of Malaysia if not the whole of Asia.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

The old town is very walkable .

If getting a taxi, do so INSIDE the terminal as they are 'somewhat' regulated. Taxis are available immediately outside the terminal but will charge twice as much.

Take a funicular railway ride up the Mountain to see the old British Traders gracious homes, and marvel at the coolness, and the views.

Getting around Penang can be a minor hassle, as buses tend to be poorly signposted and infrequent; The free bus and city busses are the same vehicle, one's just a little more crowded Take the #204 to Kek Loc Si for 2RM then continue on to Penang Hill for 1.4RM before returning to Little India or beach for 2RM. The free bus travels throughput CBD but does not go to either site.

By trishaw: These three-wheeled vehicles might be the best idea for a pleasant city tour. One can stop at any point to take photo or buy souvenirs. Negotiate the fare first before get on the trishaw; it is advisable to hire them by the hour for extended sightseeing.

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

Nearby Places:

Shopping and food.

Food tasting - Penang is popular among Malaysians for a huge variety of local food such as Char Kwey Teow, Penang Laksa and Nasi Kandar, which are found almost practically everywhere in the Island. However, the best place to go "food hopping" would be Macalister Road. For the most well-known Char Kwey Toew, try "Sister's Chow Koay Teow" at Lorong Selamat.

The three most popular shopping malls in Penang would be Gurney Plaza, Prangin Mall and Queensbay, which houses a full range of fashionable goods and necessity items. If you crave the unusual, head on down to the flea market at Lorong Kulit, which is open from morning until around 2:00pm daily. If mingling with the masses is your idea of fun, check out the pasar malam (night market) along Batu Ferringhi for some inexpensive shopping and dining, gets more interesting during weekends.

The Malaysian currency is the ringgit.

ATMs are widely available in cities, but do stock up on cash if heading out into the smaller islands or the jungle. Credit cards can be used in most shops, restaurants and hotels, although skimming can be a problem in dodgier outlets.

Tipping is not customary in Malaysia. However, hotel porters and taxi drivers will appreciate a small tip if you have been provided with exemplary service. Most expensive restaurants, bars and hotels may indicate prices in the form of RM19++, meaning that sales tax (5%) and service charge (10%) will be added to the bill.

Currency Converter

Communication:

The sole official language of Malaysia is Malay (Bahasa Malaysia). English is also taught in schools and widely spoken in the cities although in rural areas a little Malay will come in handy.

Broadband Internet is available in most hotels, cafes which offer free WiFi for customers, and some restaurants and cafes. Both cable broadband and wireless broadband (available in hot spots areas such as Starbucks and McDonald's) are available.

Emergency numbers All type of emergency 999; From mobile phone - 999 or 112

Opening Hours and Holidays:

In general shops open from 10.30am till 9.30pm in the large cities. They open and close for business earlier in the smaller towns and rural areas.

penang dream cruise port

Exploring Penang starts at the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal, conveniently situated on the northeast edge of George Town. This terminal, operational since 2009, offers essential amenities like restrooms and Wi-Fi. Upon exiting, grab a map of George Town and check out the array of brochures from enthusiastic taxi drivers eager to assist.

From this terminal, you're within walking distance of George Town's UNESCO World Heritage area, museums, lively markets, and diverse neighborhoods. For a charming and relaxed journey, consider taking a trishaw, a delightful local transportation option.

Travel Tips for Penang

When visiting Penang, remember that traffic moves on the left side, so it's crucial to look right before crossing streets. While George Town is considered safe, be aware of petty crimes like pickpocketing, especially in crowded places. To combat the tropical heat, pack sunscreen, wear hats, and keep hydrated throughout the day. Fortunately, the water in Penang is safe to drink, and the hygiene standards among street food vendors are generally reliable. So, immerse yourself in the local culinary scene with peace of mind!

Getting Around Penang

For a more unique experience, consider hopping on a trishaw, where you can negotiate rates with the driver. The Rapid Penang buses offer extensive coverage of the city and the island, with the CAT Bus providing a free shuttle service within George Town. Tourists can also opt for the convenient Hop-On Hop-Off Bus, which runs on both City and Beach routes, offering flexible 24-hour or 48-hour passes. 8 passengers got stuck in port after a late return. What to do if you miss your cruise.

penang dream cruise port

A group of Norwegian Cruise Line passengers was left behind after returning late to their ship in Africa.

Eight guests missed the last tender back to Norwegian Dawn while the ship was visiting the island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe on Wednesday, according to a spokesperson for the line. They were on a tour not organized through Norwegian.

Two guests, Jay and Jill Campbell, told South Carolina’s ABC 15 News their tour went longer than expected. When they returned, the ship was still in port, and the captain declined to let them board despite numerous attempts to reach Norwegian. At one point, they said, the island nation’s coast guard took them to the ship on a boat but told them to return to shore.

“The captain could have made an easy decision to turn one of the tender boats back, pick us up, safely load us, and then go on the way," Jay Campbell told the outlet.

'I just felt so helpless': Carnival Sunrise cruise ship faces flooding

“When the guests did not return to the vessel at the all-aboard time, their passports were delivered to the local port agents to retrieve when they returned to the port, as per the regular protocol,” the Norwegian spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “Our team has been working closely with the local authorities to understand the requirements and necessary visas needed for the guests to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call.”

Since then, the passengers have been scrambling to catch up to the cruise. Here’s what to do if you get stranded during a stop and how to minimize the chance of being left behind:

What happens if I don’t get back to my cruise in time?

Cruise lines warn guests they may get stuck if they don’t return to the ship by the stated all-aboard time.

“While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship’s intercom, in the daily print communication and posted just before exiting the vessel,” the Norwegian spokesperson said.

Cruise ships are on tight schedules while in port, said Joanna Kuther, a New York City-based travel agent and owner of Port Side Travel Consultants. “So if they have to leave at a certain time, they have to leave at that time,” she said. “It could be that there's another (ship) coming in. It could be (that) people aren't going to be there to be working on the pier.”

The Campbells told ABC 15 News that they traveled through six countries for 15 hours to reach Gambia, where the ship was due to stop on Monday. However, the vessel was unable to dock due to low tides. Norwegian said it made the change “due to adverse weather conditions, as well as tidal restrictions that require specific timing for safe passage.”

“While we share in our guests’ disappointment, this modification was made with great consideration for their safety and that of our crew, which is our top priority,” the spokesperson added.

The cruise line authorized them to rejoin the ship in Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday.

Kuther recommended guests who miss their all-aboard time contact the cruise line to let them know and reach out to their travel agent – if they have one – who can help handle the logistics. She said the nearest U.S. embassy may also be able to assist them.

Are travelers responsible for added expenses?

Travelers who do not board their ship in time are generally responsible for getting themselves to the next port of call, according to Kuther.

Travel insurance won't be much good in that scenario, either.

"Typically travel delay coverage/missed connection coverage is due to a delay of a common carrier such as an airline delay or cancellation for a covered reason which causes you to miss your cruise/tour departure," Meghan Walch, director of product at InsureMyTrip, said in an email. "An excursion supplier not getting you back to your cruise in time is typically not covered."

The Norwegian spokesperson said the cruise line is reimbursing the eight guests for their travel expenses from Banjul, Gambia, to Dakar, but Kuther stressed that kind of compensation is “definitely the exception to the rule.”

How to avoid getting stranded

When choosing a shore excursion, Kuther said it’s safest to book through the cruise line or with another vendor that guarantees to get passengers back to the ship on time or to the next port. Travel agents can help guests find those options, or they can ask operators about their policies directly when booking.

Just in case something does go wrong, travelers should bring a credit card or debit card so they have a way to cover any costs they might incur. Kuther typically recommends bringing an ID “because you don’t want to be carrying around your passport,” but if travelers are going on a private excursion without that kind of guarantee, it’s a different story.

“You probably should have your passport with you because you're going to need it to get on a flight to get to the next port, especially if it's in a different country,” she said.

At the very least, it’s a good idea for travelers to have a photo of their passport on hand, and share a copy with someone back home who is easily reachable.

Story continues below.

Cruise insurance: Should you buy it through a cruise line? Maybe not, experts say

She also recommended they make sure their phone or watch is set to ship time rather than the time of the destination, which may be different (the all-aboard time will be on ship time). “So many people get confused with that,” Kuther said.

To be safe, she suggested guests get back to the ship an hour early if they’re exploring on their own or on a self-booked excursion in case they hit traffic or face other issues.

“It's one of those things like, it's not a problem until it's a problem,” Kuther said. She urged travelers not to expect the ship to wait. “If they can, I'm sure they will, but I would never tell someone, ‘Don’t worry about it.’”

Eight passengers stranded on African island after Norwegian cruise ship left without them

A dream cruise vacation has turned into a nightmare for eight passengers left stranded on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe after their ship left without them because they were late to return from a private tour.

The tourists — six from the U.S. and two from Australia — were aboard the Norwegian Dawn, a Norwegian cruise line ship , which departed from Cape Town, South Africa, on March 20 for a 21-day voyage up the coast of Africa set to end in Barcelona, Spain, on April 10.

But on Wednesday, the group of eight tourists was late to return to the ship by more than an hour for the all-aboard time of 3 p.m. from a private excursion on the island, which was not organized by the cruise line.

Jay and Jill Campbell of South Carolina were part of the group that was left behind.

They said that their tour’s operator notified the cruise captain that they were going to be late to rejoin the ship and that the local Coast Guard tried to get them on the vessel but that they weren’t allowed to board.

As a result, the couple and the rest of the group have been stranded for days on the island off Nigeria, grappling with language, currency issues and complicated travel to catch up with the ship.

“The lovely people of São Tomé were very gracious, very hospitable. They had reached out as much as they could to help us find hotels,” Jay Campbell said on NBC's "TODAY" show Tuesday morning.

“We were able to get to a tour agency there to arrange flights to the next port of call. ... Very difficult process — you’re dealing with multiple languages, language barriers, you’re dealing with different currencies ... finding someone that even has dollars ... trying to get an agent to understand where we need to get to.

"It’s one of those ‘You can’t get there from here,’" he added.

A Norwegian spokesperson called the incident a “very unfortunate situation” and said, “Guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time.”

The cruise line said that after the guests failed to return, their passports were delivered to local port agents, in line with protocol. The company said it was working with local authorities to understand “the requirements and visas needed for the guests to reboard the ship at the next available port of call.”

On Monday, the guests had made arrangements to rejoin the ship in Banjul, Gambia, but the ship was unable to safely dock there because of “adverse weather conditions” and “tidal restrictions,” Norwegian said. The guests were then contacted and provided with information to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday.

Jill Campbell said they traveled through seven countries in 48 hours to arrive in Senegal on Monday night.

But the couple was reconsidering whether they even wanted to return to the cruise.

"We are considering whether or not we are going to board the ship. It is in dock here in Senegal," she said. "We believe there was a basic duty of care that they had forgotten about, so it does concern us."

"After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly. I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and really the safety and well-being of the customers should be their first priority," she added.

Ultimately, the eight passengers did rejoin the cruise before 8:30 a.m. ET Tuesday in Dakar, Senegal, Norwegian told NBC News in an e-mail Tuesday evening, after this story originally published.

Norwegian said the passengers were responsible for making their own travel arrangements to rejoin the ship.

"Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal," a cruise line spokesperson said in a statement. "We remain in communication with the guests and are providing additional information as it becomes available."

A silver lining of the catastrophe was that the Campbells were able to connect with another Norwegian Dawn passenger — Julia Lenkoff, 80 — who was also left on the island, but for a medical reason.

Lenkoff was on a different day tour Wednesday. She had "medically disembarked" from the cruise to seek local treatment on that day, Norwegian said.

Norwegian said that its care team tried to call Lenkoff several times and was unable to reach her and that it worked with its port agent in São Tomé and Príncipe for updates on her health.

The Campbells met Lenkoff and were able to put her in contact with her family in California, who flew her home — a move Lenkoff's daughter said "saved her life."

"She's a world traveler. She travels all the time. So this was going to be one of her bucket list trips, because she's been to 120 countries so far, and she wanted to get to 130," her daughter, Lana Lenkoff Geis, said in an interview that aired Tuesday on "TODAY."

Norwegian said Lenkoff was escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, then put in the care of airport staff members to continue her journey back to the U.S., where she has safely returned.
