Kimberley Dreams 4WD Adventure Tours From Darwin Or Broome

 • Bungle Bungles

200,000 hectares in area including 45,000 hectares of the Bungle Bungle Range, Purnululu National Park (1987) lies 110 kilometres north of Halls Creek and 260 kilometres south of Kununurra in the Kimberley region of eastern Western Australia.

Local Aboriginal inhabitants play a major role in determining visitor access to sites within the park.

Rugged conditions restrict ground access to 4WD vehicles only, while a scenic flight from a number of locations allows the best view of the famous “bee hive” rock formations (sandstone domes with bands of black lichen). The park is closed from January to April due to monsoonal conditions.

Bird and animal life is abundant within the park, along with a diverse reptile population. Eucalypts and spinifex dominate the landscape, while Livistona palms can be found in many of the gorges and waterholes.

Important Information

Alternative Itinerary, 2023 Please Note: Due to the effects of ex Tropical Cyclone Ellie in January 2023, some traditional attractions are closed for the season to give Country time to rest and recover. There is so much more to see in the Kimberley though, and we have been easily able to adapt our itineraries to include additional and extended activities, that we are normally not able to do! Plus, the landscape will be looking spectacular this year after such a great wet season: waterfalls will be thundering, swimming holes will be clean and fresh and our native wildlife will be thriving. So, while there are two destinations that we are unable to visit in the short term due to flood damage, those same big rains will mean the Kimberley has never been fresher. The season of 2023 promises to be a special opportunity to experience the Australian outback at its best.

*It may be that Tunnel Creek opens a little late for our early May tours – in this event, we will spend more time in Purnululu National Park exploring Mini Palms Gorge.

Where You'll Stay

Operated by intrepid travel.

Back in 1989, two guys from Melbourne, Australia by the names of Darrell and Manch set off on an adventure to the other side of the world. They travelled to Africa and without air conditioning on their modified truck, they filled it with supplies, some beer, a bunch of aviator sunglasses, and some friends. On that trip, they came up with the idea that perhaps others may be interested in this style of travel too. Just like that, Intrepid was born. Intrepid has come a long way since then, now giving over 100,000 travelers a year the opportunity to experience small group travel across all 7 continents. They use local transport, sleep in local accommodation from Cambodian stilt houses to Moroccan riads, and employ 100% local leaders. With three different travel styles including basix, original and comfort, themes ranging from cycling trips to family holidays, and itineraries crafted with the perfect balance of must-see sights and free time, Intrepid caters to every type of traveller no matter their age, budget or travel style. The company has grown but their mission remains the same: to change the way people see the world through sustainable, experience-rich travel

A region of astounding natural beauty and great spiritual significance, Western Australia's Kimberley region is Australia untamed. And while the roads here can be rough and distances between attractions far, that doesn't mean you need to put aside weeks to travel here. This 5-day inland adventure takes in several of the Kimberley's highlight attractions, plus a whole host of lesser-known favourites. Weave through the boulders and chasms of the Bungle Bungles, encounter Dreaming stories in the Mimbi Caves and learn the legend of Jandamarra on a tour of Tunnel Creek.

Broome / Geikie Gorge / Fitzroy Crossing

We ease into our adventure as we travel east towards Fitzroy Crossing. Join the Darlgunya Cultural Walk where our local Indigenous guide greets us with a smoking ceremony and billy tea, then leads a stroll through the remnants of the old postal settlement. Learn about the wild Fitzroy River: its plants, wildlife and significance to local culture.

China Wall / Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungles)

Visit the gold rush town of Halls Creek and see the remarkable China Wall enroute to Purnululu National Park, home of the magnificent Bungle Bungles. On arrival in Purnululu, there is time to orient ourselves and settle into our Safari Camp before a delightful bush sunset. Relax with a delicious meal and evening under the stars.

Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungles)

Spend the next day exploring the highlights of Purnululu National Park, the most famous of which are the Bungle Bungle domes. Rivers created this landscape of unique orange and black striped ‘beehive’ geological formations over a period of 20 million years. Unbelievably, only the locals knew it existed until the early 1980s. To protect its unique landscape, the area was made a national park in 1987 and now enjoys World Heritage status. We explore the 2 km-long Echidna Chasm, known for its towering Livistonia Palm trees, and take a short walk (2-3km) into stunning Cathedral Gorge, where towering rocks create a natural amphitheatre.

Mimbi Caves / Fitzroy Crossing

We bid farewell to Purnululu and travel to the ancient realm of Mimbi Caves, one of Western Australia's largest cave systems, in the heart of Gooniyandi Country. Spiritually significant, these limestone caves are one of the oldest identified sites of human occupation in Australia. Delve into Dreamtime with our local Gooniyandi guide who shares traditional stories and reveals the secrets of Mimbi Caves, a sanctuary of crystal clear pools, rare fossils and ancient rock art. Share fresh damper and billy tea with the Gooniyandi traditional owners before we head for Fitzroy Crossing.

Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) / Windjana Gorge / Derby / Broome

Following another night by the Fitzroy River, we head for Bunuba country - once a Devonian reef, this terrain is over 350 million years old and home to a diverse array of animals and plants. In the morning we seek the adventure of Tunnel Creek, a 750-metre cave system in which we discover secret caves and a large variety of wildlife. It is here we also learn the legend of Jandamarra, an Aboriginal freedom fighter who used the tunnel as a hide-out in the late 1800’s. Travel to the geological wonder of Windjana Gorge, a delightful oasis in the outback; beneath gorge walls rising 90m, we enjoy a picnic lunch and search for freshwater crocodiles, local birdlife and indigenous bushtucker. The Gibb River Road then leads us from the picturesque Napier Ranges as we begin the return to Broome via the Derby ‘Boab Prison Tree’.

Best time to visit australia.

Being such a large place, Australia has a wide range of climates, so all year round, there is somewhere great to visit.

Summer (December to February) can get very hot but is perfect for beach-going and other outdoor activities. In the far north, it is also the wet season, which can get quite humid, and some beaches may be closed due to jellyfish or 'stingers'.

Winter (June to August) is pleasant and dry in the north but can get quite cold in the south, especially in Tasmania and Victoria, where snowfall is common.

Spring and autumn are great times to visit Australia as the weather is milder but still warm enough for swimming in northern areas.

Regardless of daytime temperatures, nights can get very cold in the desert areas of Central and Western Australia, so prepare accordingly.

The main school holiday period is from Christmas to late January and is considered the peak travel time within Australia; expect popular tourist spots to be crowded during this time.

From large malls and boutique shopping strips to weekend arts and crafts markets and vintage shops, Australia is a top place to shop. Shopping in Australia may not be cheap, but there are plenty of unique finds and original souvenirs to bring home. Before heading home, check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to import certain items back into your home country. New Zealand, for example, has strict quarantine laws.

Geography and environment

The continent of Australia is known for being one of the flattest, hottest and driest places on earth, but despite this, there is an astounding variety of terrains and environments on this island nation. While large areas of Australia are covered in desert, there are also tropical rainforests, alpine snowfields, dense bushland, beaches, gorges, lakes, and rivers to be found.

Australia’s national parks are home to many species of birds and mammals not found in the wild anywhere else in the world, including kangaroos, koalas, wallabies and wombats.

Boasting many stunning white sand beaches, Australia has a coastline like none other. From busy Bondi to surfing icons like Bell’s Beach and Tasmania’s stunning Wineglass Bay , there are endless places to swim, surf, snorkel and paddle.

Despite Australia’s large landmass, most people tend to live in urban, coastal cities. Faster-paced cities like Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne hold much of the population, as do regional satellite cities such as Albury, Dubbo, Bunbury, Townsville, Newcastle and Geelong.

Outback towns have a unique flavour and a distinct way of life; things are slower here and due to smaller populations, space is plentiful, with most locals relying on agriculture for a living. Venturing away from the city to visit the Outback and rural areas of Australia is highly recommended as it gives travellers the chance to see a different side of Australia. Traverse the northern regions of Australia's iconic outback landscape on a 11 day Darwin to Broome Outback tour.

Culture and customs

With a strong history of immigration, modern Australia is made up of people from many different cultural backgrounds. This mix makes Australia an endlessly fascinating place to visit as travellers will be exposed to a variety of different customs and cultures during their stay. From the ancient, spiritual ways of the First Nations population to the wide array of faiths, foods and festivals on display in the big cities, Australia is a cultural melting pot.

Despite the differences, there are many things that unify the people of Australia. Sports, in particular cricket, soccer and football (Australian Rules), are played and watched by the masses, irrespective of age, race, gender or income. Large sporting events like the AFL Grand Final, Melbourne Cup Day and the Boxing Day Cricket Test have universal appeal for Australians.

Australians relish public holidays, with national and state holidays offering locals time to relax with friends and family over a barbecue or picnic. Making use of Australia’s natural environment is also paramount during this time, with outdoor activities like bushwalking, swimming at the beach or lazing in the park popular with locals.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Australia is a land that has been built by immigrants, and these multicultural influences are evident in the wide array of food available. In the cities, it’s possible to find world-class Vietnamese, Turkish, Italian, Greek, Chinese, Thai, Japanese and Indian restaurants, as well as excellent gastro-pub fare. Head to the Outback, and you’ll find authentic ' bush tucker ', simple campfire meals and sizzling barbecues.

Food to try in Australia

1. Fresh seafood

With such an impressive coastline, it’s no wonder fresh oysters, prawns, mussels and ‘balmain bugs’ are devoured by locals and savoured by visitors. For those on a budget, there’s nothing wrong with eating fish and chips on the beach.

Australia creates some of the best wines in the world at South Australia’s Barossa Valley , Western Australia’s Margaret River and New South Wales’s Hunter Valley .

Whether you’re downing a can of VB in Victoria or sipping micro-brewed ale in Sydney, sharing a beer with mates is a social experience not to be missed when in Australia

4. Hot pies

An Australian classic – savoury meat pies (or vegetable pies for vegetarians) are best eaten with tomato sauce and are easily found served in city cafes, country bakeries and football matches around Australia.

What's the weather like in Australia?

The weather in Australia varies depending on where in the country you are. For example, winter in Victoria and Tasmania tends to be very cold (around the 10 °C -15 ° C mark), whereas, if you head further north to the Northern Territory and Queensland, temperatures in the winter months are much nicer (usually around 18 ° C-25 ° C).

This pattern also applies to summer, where the southern states tend to experience lower temperatures (but still warm), while the northern and western states are warmer, with temperatures reaching as high as 40 ° C+.

Is tipping customary in Australia?

Tipping isn’t mandatory in Australia; however, rounding up the bill or leaving spare change is common practice. Restaurant staff, taxi drivers and other service workers welcome tips for good service.

What is the internet access like in Australia?

Internet access is widely available in most parts of Australia, with internet cafes and Wi-Fi hot spots commonly found in urban areas. Please note that internet access won’t be available in Outback and remote areas.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Australia?

Mobile phone coverage is excellent in most parts of Australia, especially in large cities and urban areas. Remote, rural and mountainous places may have limited to no coverage, so be aware of this before venturing away from the city. Ensure global roaming is activated before leaving your home country if you want to use your mobile, or you can purchase a sim card when you arrive. The provider that will have coverage in the majority of Australia is Telstra, secondly Optus and then Vodafone. A hot tip – when you are in remote areas and don’t have mobile phone signal, turn your phone to flight mode which will conserve battery and prevent your phone from using data trying to search for internet signal.

What are the toilets like in Australia?

Western-style flushable toilets are the norm in Australia, and many of our campsites have proper facilities with flushing toilets. In remote areas such as the Kimberley, there is no established plumbing and therefore we have installed ‘drop toilets’. Some campsites we use are managed by the National Parks and have either eco-toilets or drop toilets, most of which are maintained regularly.

Can I drink the water in Australia?

Drinking water from taps in Australia is considered safe, unless otherwise marked. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Australia?

Credit cards are widely accepted by shops, restaurants and cafes in Australia. Smaller establishments may only accept cash or require a minimum purchase for credit card use, so be sure to carry enough cash for smaller purchases.

What is ATM access like in Australia?

ATMs are commonly found in large cities and regional towns in Australia. ATM access will be very limited in remote areas so be aware of this before heading into national parks or the Outback.

Who are the First Nations people of Australia?

There are two distinct groups of First Nations peoples in Australia - Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islander people - both of which have lived on this land for centuries. While there are only two Indigenous groups, there's actually a wide range of language and location communities that are made up of Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islander people including the Adnyamathanha people of the Flinders Ranges (Aboriginal Australians) and the Badu people from the Near Western Group (Torres Strait Islander people).

Is Australia LGBTQIA+ friendly?

Australia is a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers thanks to its anti-discrimination laws, diverse population and welcoming culture. There are many LGBTQIA+ friendly neighbourhoods and establishments across the country, as well as a wide variety of Pride events.

What's the transport like in Australia?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun. Depending on which trip you're on while in Australia, you may even find yourself travelling overland.

Overland tours

Australia is a big place – like, huge. Overland tours involve a lot of time on the road covering long distances, and sometimes the landscape can be pretty barren, so bring a book or some tunes to keep you company.

What's the accommodation like in Australia?

Travelling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavour to provide travellers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When travelling with us in Australia you may find yourself staying in a:

Our lodge accommodation is located outside major cities, such as near the entrance to a National Park, and has its own amenities such as a restaurant or dining room. Lodges are comfortable places to stay and offer a good night's rest after a day spent exploring the natural beauty of Australia.

Permanent Tented Campsite

There's no need to put up your tent when you spend the night in a Permanent Tented Campsite. You'll have a roof over your head and will bunk down on sleeper mats on the ground or stretcher (camp) beds, with access to a toilet/shower block. Tent sizes can vary depending on the trip you're on and the location you're visiting. Some of our permanent tented campsites are a little bit fancy, others are very simple. Sometimes you'll be sharing a tent with others in your group.

Our bush camping experiences are as diverse as Australia itself. Some offer swag camping under cover or under the twinkling stars. You could be sleeping in a tent with access to simple toilet or shower amenities or you might not have access to a shower at all. However, the scenery at these magical spots makes it worth going without a bath for a day or so. Sometimes a trip has participatory camping where everyone pitches in to help. Other times, a staff member is on hand to look after things like cooking.

We provide accommodation at a wide variety of hotels around Australia. Some are quite upmarket, others less so, but all of them offer a comfortable stay and ensuite facilities.

We use hostels on some trips which means your bed could be in a twin room or a shared dorm room. Some of these rooms come with their own facilities while others have share facilities.

How do I stay safe and healthy while travelling?

Intrepid takes the health and safety of its travellers seriously and takes every measure to ensure that trips are safe, fun and enjoyable for everyone. We recommend that all travellers check with their government or national travel advisory organisation for the latest information before departure:

What is it like travelling on a small group tour?

Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or you’re about to embark on your first trip, travelling can be as intimidating as it is exciting. That's the beauty of a small group tour. From handling the logistics and organising amazing cultural activities to local leaders who know each destination like the back of their hand (like which street has the best markets and where to get the most authentic food), travelling on a small group tour with Intrepid will give you unforgettable travel experiences without the hassle that comes with exploring a new place. Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and we’ll take care of the rest.

Does my trip to Australia support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveller. Trips to Australia directly support our foundation partners, Blue Carbon Lab, Greening Australia and WWF-Australia. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Blue Carbon Lab

Blue Carbon Lab is helping to mitigate climate change by restoring and protecting blue carbon in coastal wetlands. We've already lost 65% of wetlands globally, and multiple impacts, including urban development, agriculture, industry, and more, threaten these crucial blue-carbon ecosystems. Donations from our trips help Blue Carbon Lab to restore the natural coastal wetland areas in Victoria, Australia.

Greening Australia

Greening Australia is taking action to rebuild resilient ecosystems across Australia, from the warm waters of the Great Barrier Reef to the cool island ark of Tasmania. How do I get to the Bungle Bungle?

Access to the park by road is via Spring Creek Track, from the Great Northern Highway approximately 250km south of Kununurra, through Mabel Downs cattle station to the track's end at the Purnululu National Park Visitor Centre.

Why are the Bungle Bungle famous?

Famous for the 450 km2 Bungle Bungle Range, Purnululu has been listed as an outstanding landscape that is an incomparable natural phenomenon. It reveals the story of its formation over hundreds of millions of years, and helps unlock the story of the earth's history.

Who found the Bungle Bungle?

The park is known for the astounding Bungle Bungle range, which was only 'discovered' by a film team in 1983. Purnululu National Park was established in 1987 and skyrocketed to world fame in short time.

What do the Bungle Bungle look like?

The Bungle Bungle have a distinct orange-and-black-ringed pattern running down their surface. This is caused not only by the conglomerate nature of their make-up but from water getting trapped in denser layers, allowing algae to grow and form the darker colorations.

How tall are the Bungle Bungle?

The average height of the Bungle Bungle range is approximately 200-300 metres high and seems even higher whilst walking through the gorges and chasms.

What are the Bungle Bungle made of?

The distinctive beehive-shaped towers are made up of sandstones and conglomerates (rocks composed mainly of pebbles and boulders and cemented together by finer material). These sedimentary formations were deposited into the Red Basin 375 to 350 million years ago, when active faults were altering the landscape.

 • This trip is operated and run by our trusted partner, Kimberley Wild Expeditions. You will be travelling with a mixture of both Kimberley Wild Expeditions customers and Intrepid customers. Intrepid works closely with Kimberley Wild Expeditions to ensure that all of our customers enjoy their time away.
 • This is a camping trip for those who are looking for the basics. Simple facilities and lack of emphasis on creature comforts make this an authentic experience of the Australian outback.
 • On some days of the trip, you’ll spend several hours driving through very sparse areas of Australia. Sit back and enjoy landscapes that you would miss in any other form of travel. Extra space can be tight, and conditions may feel a little cramped. Think of it as a great way to get to know your fellow travellers. The drive days can be long, but it’s as much about the journey as the destination, and half the fun is the camaraderie.
 • Our leaders are the classic do-it-all Aussie – they know the best spots to watch the sunset, can drive you to your next destination, take you on a guided hike or even whip up dinner for the group on some trips. While they won’t always do all these jobs on every trip, be aware they will be juggling many things on your tour and may have less time to spend with you. They will always be working hard to ensure you and your group have a fantastic time exploring Australia.
 • This itinerary involves some clambering over rocks, wading in water by torchlight, walking on rocky creek beds and ascending/descending into gorges. A reasonable level of fitness and being sure on your feet is necessary to participate.
 • Please Note: Due to the effects of ex-Tropical Cyclone Ellie in January 2023, some traditional attractions are closed for the season to give Country time to rest and recover.
 • Proof of vaccination against COVID-19 is no longer mandatory on departures after 1st January 2023. Nonetheless, all travellers are strongly advised to be vaccinated as a safety measure to protect themselves and others on the tour. This policy excludes all Polar trips and select adventure cruises, where testing and vaccination are required.
 • Also, proof of vaccination may still be required at specific entry points or by the airlines. Therefore, please make sure to check all the travel requirements carefully before travelling.

This trip incorporates the following COVID-19 measures:

 • This tour has received the World Travel and Tourism Council’s Safe Travels stamp, which provides travellers with assurance that COVID-19 health and hygiene global standardised protocols have been adopted.
 • Hygiene and safety guidelines will be followed to ensure your well being is looked after during travels.

How Far From Broome to Bungle Bungles Western Australia

how far from broome western australia to bungle bungles western australia

If you are planning a trip to the Bungle Bungles, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Australia, then you will need to know how far from Broome to get there. There are different ways you can travel to the bungles, including helicopter flights, driving, and even taking a tour. You will need to be prepared for each option you choose.

Cathedral Gorge walk trail

Cathedral Gorge is one of the most spectacular places in Australia. It is part of the network of gorges in Purnululu National Park. The gorges have a unique natural amphitheatre.

Cathedral Gorge is a World Heritage Site. One of two such sites in Western Australia. During the wet season, the gorge fills with water. However, it trickles out as the weather improves. If you are in Western Australia during the wet season, you will not be able to reach this scenic spot.

If you’re travelling to Broome in Western Australia, there are plenty of things to do. Among them is cable beach, which was once the home of whales. Today, it is ideal for swimming and fishing. Locals are also fond of taking a camel ride on the beach.

When the sun sets, the colours of the Bungle Bungles range are particularly stunning. Visitors can also take a helicopter tour of the area. Helicopter tours are available through HeliSpirit. Alternatively, you can drive or hike to the gorges.

Hiking is a great way to explore the Bungle Bungles. Several hiking trails exist, including the Spring Creek Track. This is a relatively difficult hike and you should be prepared to put in a lot of physical effort.

For a shorter walk, try the Echidna Chasm. The chasm is a narrow and beautiful gorge. It is situated close to the campground.

If you’re planning a trip to Western Australia, Broome is the perfect base. It is located in the Kimberley region, which is home to spectacular waterfalls and natural wonders. This area is also a great place for outback adventure.

The region offers plenty of hiking opportunities for all fitness levels. You can explore the gorges and canyons of Purnululu National Park, or hike through the famous Bungle Bungles. There are many tours available from Broome, including self-drive options.

For a more active adventure, you can take a helicopter tour of the park. HeliSpirit offers scenic flights to view the Bungle Bungles and Lake Argyle. They also offer a short ground tour. Alternatively, you can fly in a plane to view the entire range.

Cable Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia. It boasts 22 kilometres of white sand and red ochre cliffs. While the area is known for its sunsets, it’s also a fantastic place for water sports and fishing.

Another major attraction is Purnululu National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can get there from Broome by helicopter or Qantas flight.

The park is made up of a variety of unique rock formations and gorges. Visitors can enjoy a scenic flight, a hike, or simply relax on the beach.

Another popular walk is the Cathedral Gorge. A walk trail of 2km takes you through a fascinating geological landmark. The trail is a Class 3 walk and has some short, steep sections. To fully appreciate the beauty of the Cathedral Gorge, you should bring a light pack with a few bottles of water and a picnic lunch.

Helicopter flights

If you’re visiting the Kimberley region, one of the best ways to see the region’s highlights is to take a helicopter flight. These air tours provide a fantastic view of the area, but they also offer much more.

HeliSpirit offers helicopter tours in the Kimberley, as well as in the Northern Territory. The company is locally operated and specializes in scenic helicopter flights. It has nine bases across the Kimberley, including its head office in Kununurra.

This tour provides an incredible perspective on the Bungle Bungles. It takes passengers on a scenic flight around the massif, which includes a stop at Halls Creek. On the ground, you can choose to hike or take a ride on a camel.

This tour departs from Broome and visits several sites. Along the way, you’ll learn about Aboriginal culture and rock art. You’ll also explore a gorge. Upon return, you’ll enjoy a picnic lunch.

The Buccaneer Archipelago is a remote region in northern Western Australia. The archipelago is home to a number of different islands. There are snorkelling, fishing and diving opportunities here.

The Bungle Bungles Range is in the Purnululu National Park, and is a World Heritage Site. This tour is suitable for adults and children alike. Included is a morning flight to park lookouts, a lunch, a walk through domes, and ground transfers.

This tour has a maximum passenger limit of six, and offers a variety of activities. Your flight includes a stop at a local gorge, where you can climb a rock face or relax in a shady riverbed.

Caravan park

If you are considering a trip to Bungle Bungles, there are several caravan parks that can offer you a comfortable stay. For example, you can stay at the Kimberlyland Waterfront Holiday Park on Lake Kununurra. This park has great reviews, and the location is ideal.

Another place to stay is the APT Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge, which offers canvas glamping tents. The park also has standard cabins, which have timber flooring and private en-suites with hot water. You can book an overnight stay or a weeklong tour.

In addition, you can book a guided walking tour with Willis’s Walkabouts. Their range of tours includes a two-hour aerial flight over the Bungles, a hike to the Cathedral Gorge, and a tour of the Domes.

You can also opt to stay at the safari tent accommodation at the southern end of the park. The campsite at Silent Grove is the best spot to see Bells Falls.

A few other places to stay include the free camp in Kununurra and the free camp in Lake Kununurra. Both have well-marked visitor locations.

The Great Northern Highway links Broome and Kununurra, and there are many 4WD options. It is recommended that you use a four-wheel drive if you are traveling to the Bungles, since it is a remote area.

For those who want to explore the park by foot, there are several trails that lead you to the northern and southern parts of the park. You can also take day trips from the campground.

Tours from Kununurra

Kununurra is the gateway to the East Kimberley region of Western Australia. It is a city with many natural attractions, including lakes, rivers, waterfalls, and the Bungle Bungle Range. This town is also home to the Ord River, a waterway that is considered a pristine river.

The Kununurra Visitors Centre can help you plan a visit to the Kimberley region. They offer maps and local advice. You can also book tours. If you are interested in a more relaxing way to experience the Kimberley, you might want to consider taking an overnight cruise on the Ord River.

There are several different tour operators offering different Kimberley tours. Some depart from Perth or Darwin, while others head to Broome.

Most tours take about five days to complete. The 5-day Kimberley Express Tour includes a stay at Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge, a drive through Geikie Gorge, and a visit to Tunnel Creek. For a more comprehensive tour, the Ultimate Kimberley Tour takes you to a variety of Kimberley landmarks. It also includes the Windjana Gorge, Horizontal Waterfalls, Zebedee Springs, and Home Valley.

Other tours include an overnight stay at Lake Argyle, one of the largest man-made lakes in the Southern Hemisphere. This area is part of the Ord River Irrigation Scheme, which harnesses water from the Ord River for agriculture.

You can also explore the Bungle Bungle massif by high-clearance 4WD. These behive-like mounds are surrounded by a stunning landscape.

Getting to the Bungle Bungles

If you’re planning on travelling to the Bungle Bungles, it’s best to start from Broome. This is because the range is located at the end of the Great Northern Highway. You can take a scenic flight or a 4WD to reach the range.

The Bungles range is located in the Purnululu National Park. It is home to a variety of wild animals, including kangaroos and wallabies. However, most of the park is closed during the wet season. During the dry season, the range offers fantastic views.

The park has a variety of walking trails. One is the Spring Creek Track, which takes about eight hours to reach. Another is the Picaninny Gorge. In the gorge, you’ll find towering rock walls and a calm pool of water.

The park is open from April to November. There is public telephone and cool drinks at the visitor center.

The Bungles are an unusual geological formation. They are made of beehive-shaped sandstone domes. These towers are a natural phenomenon that have existed for millions of years. A unique feature of the Bungles is the orange-and-black striped pattern.

There are numerous tours that offer trips to the Bungle Bungles. For example, Willis’s Walkabouts offers a series of guided tours and multi-day hikes. The company offers overnight stays as well.

Another option is to fly to Kununurra and take a four-wheel-drive to the park. Aviair offers day and overnight flights.

Hi this is a bit of a Hail Mary request. I am asking on behalf of a friend who will be in Darwin with the Lions National Convention. She has a free day on May 28 and would like to see the Bungle Bungles on that day. Kookaburra Air have a tour for $1800.00 but they will not fly 1 passenger only. apparently there must be at least 2 passengers for Kookaburra Air to do the tour. I know it is a long shot but is there a chance that someone else would like to join Sue on that tour on May 28.

Air North fly to Kun . She may be able to get a charter same day that fits in and allows her to fly back to Darwin presumably same day?

Even so the flights then from Kun ate seveal hours given the distance feom Kun.

Can she not ask on some Lions Forum if there are any other convention delegates who want to join her? Or maybe she could contact the convention organisers and ask them to publicise it.

Darwin that flies over the Bungle Bungles and Lake Argyle and returns to Darwin ( hence the $1800 cost).. it's just that she's always wanted to see the Bungle Bungles and it may be her only chance.

She has asked some of the Lions but none are interested.. I appreciate your reply and I only asked the question if there happened to be someone looking to do the same thing.. it was always gonna be a long shot anyway.

Unlocking the Secrets of Australia's Bungle Bungles

The Bungle Bungle Range, shrouded in centuries-old mystery and Aboriginal heritage, stands as an awe-inspiring example of the forces of nature. Situated in the remote Kimberley region of Western Australia, this geological formation is a symphony of orange and black stripes, sculpted into towering sandstone karsts stretching 175 square miles within the Purnululu National Park.

An Enigmatic Formation

Rising to heights of up to 800 feet, these colossal beehive-shaped cones captivate the imagination, drawing adventurers and scientists to uncover the secrets hidden within.

Very Large Formations

According to researchers, the Bungle Bungle Range owes its appearance to a series of geological processes that unfolded approximately 375 to 350 million years ago.

A Geological Tale

They were formed by ancient oceans, shifting tectonic plates, and the relentless march of erosion.

The Passage of Time

During this time, sedimentary formations, including sandstones and conglomerates, were deposited into the Red Basin. Active faults in the area further sculpted the landscape.

Sculpted Landscape

The sands that form the foundation of these majestic domes were laid down over 360 million years ago by a long-vanished river, compressed and uplifted by the earth's geological forces.

Formation Unveiled

Over millennia, these forces meticulously shaped the sandstone into the distinct conical formations that grace the landscape today, creating a spectacle that continues to awe. Wind from the nearby Tanami Desert and centuries of rainfall played pivotal roles in shaping the domes revealing the stunning bands of orange and black that adorn their surfaces.

Nature's Artistry

The vibrant hues that adorn their surfaces come from iron and manganese, giving rise to the rusty orange bands. Darker bands hosting moisture-loving algal or cyanobacteria growth cloak the rocks in shades of grey and black. These microbial crusts, among the oldest life forms on Earth, play a crucial role in preserving the delicate sandstone.

Nature's Palette

Satellite imagery has unveiled a new mystery surrounding the Bungle Bungle Range, a 7-kilometer diameter circular topographic feature, believed to be the remnants of an ancient meteorite impact crater known as the Piccaninny crater. This revelation adds another layer of intrigue to an already captivating landscape.

Mysteries Unveiled

Despite the harsh desert surroundings, the Bungle Bungles teem with unexpected biodiversity. Hidden within their labyrinthine passageways and towering cliffs are endemic plant species. At the same time, elusive creatures like the Lerista bungle-bungle skink find refuge in the cool shadows of the gorges. Palm trees dot the landscape, their roots tapping into hidden springs that bubble up from the earth.

An Oasis of Life

Aboriginal people have inhabited this land for over 20,000 years, fostering a deep connection to its ancient landscape. Sacred sites and rock art paintings dot the landscape, connecting the land and its traditional custodians.

Guardians of Tradition

The Bungle Bungle Range remained largely unknown until 1982, when filmmakers documented the Kimberley region, bringing its wonders to the world's attention. In 1987, the area became a National Park, recognizing its ecological and geological importance. In 2003, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, securing its place as a global treasure.

From Obscurity to UNESCO World Heritage

Today the national park is managed in collaboration with the traditional Aboriginal owners, preserving its natural splendor and cultural heritage.

A Cultural Legacy

For those who dare to venture into the heart of this remote wilderness, a journey of discovery awaits, where each twist and turn reveals a new marvel and the echoes of the past reverberate through the ages.
