1976 european tour.

The 1976 European Tour was a series of golf tournaments that comprised the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) Tournament Players’ Division circuit. It is officially recognised as the fifth season of the PGA European Tour .

Historically, the PGA's Order of Merit only included tournaments in Great Britain and Ireland, but in 1970 events in continental Europe were included for the first time. The circuit and organisation evolved further over the following years, adopting the name PGA European Golf Tour in 1979. [1]

The season was made up of 21 tournaments counting for the Order of Merit, and some non-counting tournaments that later became known as "Approved Special Events". The schedule included the major national opens around Europe, with the other tournaments mostly held in England and Scotland. [2]

The Order of Merit was won by Spain's Seve Ballesteros .

There were several changes from the previous season, with the addition of the Greater Manchester Open and the Uniroyal International ; [3] along with non-counting events the Cacharel World Under-25 Championship and the Lancome Trophy ; and the Benson & Hedges Festival being retitled as the Benson & Hedges International Open .

The following table lists official events during the 1976 season.

Unofficial events

The following events were sanctioned by the European Tour, but did not carry official money, nor were wins official.

Order of Merit

The Order of Merit was based on prize money won during the season, calculated using a points-based system. [4]

S. Korean LPGA star Kim Hyo-joo wins European Tour event at home

golf-tournament

SEOUL, May 12 (Yonhap) -- South Korean LPGA star Kim Hyo-joo won the very first Ladies European Tour (LET) tournament held on her home soil Sunday.

Kim shot 10-under 206 at the weather-interrupted Aramco Team Series at New Korea Country Club in Goyang, on the northwestern outskirts of Seoul. Kim, world No. 12, shot a four-under 68 on Sunday to hold off eighth-ranked Charley Hull by three strokes for the wire-to-wire win.

This was the second leg of the Aramco Team Series, presented by the Public Investment Fund, Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund. It was also the first LET event taking place in South Korea.

The second round of this three-round event was cut short by heavy downpours on Saturday, forcing players to complete their middle round early Sunday before playing the final round. At six-under through 36 holes, Kim held a two-stroke lead over Mariajo Uribe of Colombia entering the third round, with Hull sitting another shot back in third place.

Hull poured in five birdies on the front nine to cut Kim's lead to one, while Uribe dropped out of contention with bogeys on three of her first five holes.

Kim and Hull recorded pars on the first four holes of the back nine, before Kim gave herself some breathing room with a birdie at the 14th.

She then grabbed a three-stroke lead with another birdie at the 16th. Her consecutive birdie at the par-5 17th sealed the deal.

A bogey at the 18th was Kim's only blemish in the final round.

Kim's previous LET victory came in September 2014 at the Evian Championship, an LPGA major co-sanctioned by the LET.

The US$1 million Aramco tournament also featured a team competition.

Team captains, seeded based on their world ranking positions, selected one additional player to join their team. Each side was then randomly assigned an amateur player and another professional player from the remaining pool.

The foursome led by Korean American veteran Danielle Kang won the team event at 23-under after 36 holes. They held off the team captained by Johanna Gustavsson of Sweden by two strokes.

The Aramco event used a "two-from-four" scoring system for the team competition over the first two days, meaning the two best scores on each hole counted for teams.

Shannon Tan learns lessons on and off the course in her first four months on golf’s Ladies European Tour

1976 european golf tour

SEOUL – These days when Shannon Tan walks a course, her first instinct is not to check the leaderboard.

This may not have been the case last season or earlier, but she has gained plenty of lessons in her first four months on the Ladies European Tour (LET) that she believes have helped her become a better athlete.

The 20-year-old used to always look at the leaderboard to see how she was performing as compared to others, but now tries to focus on just herself.

It was an epiphany that came to her one night as she was having dinner after one of her rounds at the Magical Kenya Ladies Open in February.

“I can play well in the last round and she plays even better, so there’s no point worrying about what your opponent does,” said Tan, who eventually won the tournament to become Singapore’s first LET champion.

“It helps my mindset when I go into an event that I should just be in control of me trying to hit fairways and greens instead of focusing on other things like how everyone else is doing.”

1976 european golf tour

Her foray into professional golf has taken her to unique venues like the Vipingo Ridge in Kenya, where giraffes and zebras roamed the course freely; back to Australia, a familiar ground where she completed her high-school studies; and to South Africa, where she played against a mountainous backdrop and had “the best steak”.

It has also been a lesson in growing up for the world No. 205, who has encountered many new experiences since she turned professional in January.

The golfer, whose hands get “itchy” after two days of not playing, has learnt to pace herself amid the Tour’s demanding schedule.

At the Aramco Team Series in Tampa, she came down with a cough, runny nose and sore throat that lasted a fortnight, after pushing herself too hard at previous tournaments in Morocco and Saudi Arabia.

Tan has since found a routine that works for her. If she is playing the pro-am round, she makes sure to play nine holes instead of 18 on each of the other two practice days.

“I’ve learnt not to go overboard,” said Tan on the sidelines of the May 10-12 Aramco Team Series – Korea.

“The worst thing to happen is if you’re in contention but you’re feeling really tired.”

The Republic’s top female golfer has also grown more patient, noted Tan’s caddie Robin Ellis, who has been on her bag since the LET Q-School at the end of 2023.

“She’s become a lot more accepting about dropping a shot here and there and then responding on the next hole,” said the Welshman, 30, who has caddied for other LET players like Pia Babnik, Christine Wolf and Lydia Hall.

1976 european golf tour

Tan is also embracing other tasks such as booking flights and accommodation and managing finances by herself.

It also helps that the other golfers have made Tan welcome on the Tour, making it easier for her to find people to share Airbnb accommodation and transport with, as she is legally too young to rent a car in some countries.

New Zealand’s Momoka Kobori, who has known Tan since their junior golf days, said of her: “It’s easy for people to get in their own shell during tournament weeks but she’s not like that.”

This easy-going nature is something that Tan also exhibits on the course, noted fellow LET rookie Annabell Fuller.

The American said: “I’ve no idea if she’s shot a six under or six over because she’s always the same happy person at the end of the day.”

But beneath this cool exterior is also a fearlessness that Kobori, 25, believes is one of the traits that makes Tan a good golfer.

While some may take a conservative approach at difficult holes to avoid making mistakes, she remembers how Tan was going straight for the pins at the Webex Players Series’ Murray River event in January.

With Tan making a fine start to her professional career, she has also found herself in the running for one of the 60 spots for the Paris Olympics. She currently sits 45th in the women’s Olympic Golf Rankings, with the qualification period ending on June 24.

Making it to the Games would be another significant milestone for Tan.

“You’ve got Joseph Schooling for swimming, so I hope to do the same for golf and make it more popular back home,” she said.

PGA Championship 2024: Answering the most frequently asked questions about the year's second major

1408057543

Gary Kellner

After a quiet stretch on the PGA Tour schedule following the Masters, the season is about to get another dose of major excitement with the 2024 PGA Championship set to be held at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. This will be the fourth time this course will host the PGA Championship, tied for second most in the history of the event, only behind Southern Hills.

A year ago, Brooks Koepka bested runners-up Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler by two strokes at Oak Hill for his third career PGA title while also becoming the first LIV golfer to win a major. Koepka is just the third golfer to win three or more PGAs in the stroke-play era, joining Jack Nicklaus (five times) and Tiger Woods (four).

While Koepka also has momentum having won the most recent LIV Golf event in Singapore, Scottie Scheffler is the odds-on favorite to win at Valhalla after victories in March and April at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Players, the Masters and the RBC Heritage. Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Koepka and Viktor Hovland round out the top-five favorites, according to most sportsbooks.

It should be an excellent second men’s major of the season after Scheffler’s superlative Sunday at Augusta National. Below, we'll answer any and all frequently asked questions you may have about the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla.

When and where is the 2024 PGA Championship being held?

This year’s PGA takes place at Valhalla Golf Club, in Louisville, Ky., a private course designed by Jack Nicklaus back in 1996. The four-round tournament is being played May 16-19. In addition to hosting the PGA Championship three previous times (1996, 2000 and 2014), Valhalla has also hosted two Senior PGAs and the 2008 Ryder Cup.

The course sits on a 486-acre property and is a mainstay of Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest Courses in America list . It’s been on that particular ranking since 1993 and has been atop our Kentucky hierarchy since 1989.

1408058912

“Given a difficult piece of land on which to create Valhalla [half the site was floodplain, with high-tension power poles], Jack Nicklaus drew on his training under Pete Dye and Desmond Muirhead to produce a unique design, with an alternate fairway par 5, a par 4 with an island green and an 18th green shaped like a horseshoe,” reads our site’s breakdown . “Over the decades, Nicklaus returned periodically to update its challenges, and the club replaced turf and rebuilt bunkers as recently as 2022.”

Who conducts the PGA Championship?

The Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) of America conducts the event.

Are the PGA Tour and the PGA of America different?

Yes, the PGA Tour and the PGA of America have been independent of one another since 1968. The PGA Tour is an elite organization of tournament professionals, while the PGA of America is made up of club and teaching professionals who work at on- and off-course golf facilities around the country (and the world).

When and where was the first PGA Championship played? And who won?

The first PGA Championship was played in 1916 at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, N.Y. England’s Jim Barnes won, 1 up, over Jock Hutchinson.

Wait, 1 up … so was the PGA Championship a match-play event at one time?

Yes, from 1916 to 1957, the PGA Championship was contested as match play with a stroke-play qualifier. During the course of the championship, it was not uncommon for players to play more than 200 holes in seven days. Starting in 1958, the PGA Championship switched to the standard 72-hole, stroke-play format. Dow Finsterwald won the first stroke-play version of the event in 1958 at Llanerch Country Club in Havertown, Pa.

How many players are in the field?

1512317319

Keyur Khamar

The PGA Championship has a maximum of 156 golfers allowed in the field. This year, 16 previous champions are expected to tee it up, including last year’s winner, Brooks Koepka. Speaking of LIV Golf, the fledgling league looks to have 16 players heading to Valhalla, three more than at the Masters. Bryson DeChambeau, Tyrrell Hatton, Dustin Johnson, Martin Kaymer, Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, Joaquin Niemann, Jon Rahm and Cameron Smith all made the cut due to previous wins, stellar play and a special invite (for Niemann).

Here’s the full field list.

Do club professionals play in the PGA Championship, too?

Yes. The PGA of America holds 20 spots for the top finishers at its annual PGA Professional Championship , which was held in early May at Fields Ranch at PGA Frisco in Frisco, Texas.

Has a club professional ever won the PGA Championship?

Not in the modern era of the PGA Tour. According to the PGA of America, the best performance since 1970 by a club professional playing in the PGA Championship was a third-place finish in 1971 by Tommy Bolt, a former tour pro who had retired from the tour. The last top-10 also came from a former tour pro—a very famous one—turned club professional: Sam Snead in 1973. Prior to last year’s PGA, only one club professional had finished inside the top 20 in the last 30 years—Jay Overton in 1988 at Oak Tree.

Michael Block changed all that just one year ago when he had a run for the ages ( which doesn’t look like it’ll stop anytime soon ) and finished T-15 at Oak Hill. Three rounds of 70 and a 71 on Sunday had him in the mix all weekend as he became a surprising star at the 2023 major, earning a tidy $288,333 as well. That top-15 finish also automatically qualified him for this year’s PGA. He will surely be one of the hottest names at Valhalla.

Can amateurs play in the PGA Championship?

No. The PGA Championship is limited to professionals only, meaning amateurs cannot qualify.

What does the winner of PGA Championship receive?

The PGA champion receives the Wanamaker Trophy, the largest trophy of the four men’s majors. In 2023, the winner also received a top prize of $3.15 million, 18 percent of the $17.5 million purse. (The PGA of America hasn't announced what the purse is for 2024.) Traditionally the winner also receives automatic invites into all three of the other majors and the Players Championship for the next five years, PGA Tour membership for the next five years and DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) membership for the next seven years. They also become eligible to compete in the PGA Championship for life.

Who won the 2023 PGA Championship?

1512317539

Michael Block, who won fanfare, notoriety and $288,333, but the actual winner of the 2023 PGA at Oak Hill was Brooks Koepka. The LIV golfer finished the tournament at nine under, two strokes up on runners-up Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland.

Koepka shot a Sunday 67, including three straight birdies on Holes No. 2-4 to start his final round. Two rounds of 66 on Friday and Saturday made up for a 72 to start the major, as he became the first LIV golfer to win a major.

Cameron Davis, Bryson DeChambeau and Kurt Kitayama rounded out the top six.

Who has won the most PGA Championships?

Jack Nicklaus and Walter Hagen hold the record for most PGA Championship victories with five. Nicklaus also holds the record for most runner-up finishes in the PGA Championship with four.

How many PGA Championships has Tiger Woods won?

451617692

Tiger Woods makes his putt for par and to win the PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2007.

Montana Pritchard/PGA of America

Tiger Woods has won four PGA Championships, the last coming in 2007 at Southern Hills . His second was at Valhalla in 2000 when he defeated Bob May in a playoff.

Who are the most famous golfers not to have won the PGA Championship?

There are three players in golf history who have won the other three men’s major championships (the Masters, the U.S. Open and the Open Championship) but have not completed the career Grand Slam by winning the PGA. They are Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and Jordan Spieth. Spieth will be in the Valhalla field coming off a missed cut at the Masters. Who knows with Spieth though? He could be leading the pack on Thursday or be searching for his ball in the woods for hours.

Who is the youngest winner of the PGA Championship?

Gene Sarazen is the youngest winner, claiming the title at Oakmont Country Club in 1922 at 20 years and 174 days old. He defended his title the following year at Pelham Country Club and went on to win his third and final PGA at Blue Mound Golf & Country Club in 1933.

What is the PGA Championship scoring record?

The record for the lowest 72-hole score in a PGA Championship was held by David Toms for his 15-under 265 total at Atlanta Athletic Club in Duluth, Ga., in 2001, but Brooks Koepka broke that mark in 2018 with his 16-under 264 at Bellerive. Koepka also tied the record set by Henrik Stenson at the 2016 Open Championship for the lowest total in major championship history.

What is the PGA Championship scoring record in relation to par?

Jason Day holds the record for scoring in relation to par not only in PGA Championship history but in major championship history. The Australian was 20-under-par (268) when he won at Whistling Straits in Haven, Wis., in 2015.

What is the highest winning score of a PGA Championship? In relation to par?

The highest total score of a PGA champion is one-under 287, shot by Larry Nelson in 1987 at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The highest winning score in relation to par was one-over 281, shot four times: Jay Hebert, 1960; Julius Boros, 1968; Gary Player, 1972; and Dave Stockton, 1976.

What is the largest margin of victory in the PGA Championship?

150231712

Sam Greenwood

The largest margin of victory in the PGA Championship belongs to Rory McIlroy, who won by eight strokes in 2012 at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island (S.C.). The Northern Irishman won the event again in 2014 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky. That remains his last major championship victory.

If players are tied after 72 holes, how is a winner determined?

In the event of a tie, the PGA of America employs a three-hole aggregate format for the championship's playoff. This occurred just two years ago between Justin Thomas and Will Zalatoris. If players are tied after three holes it becomes a sudden-death playoff.

How many playoffs have there been in PGA Championship history?

Since 1958 and the move to stroke play, there have been 14 playoffs in the PGA Championship, the most recent coming in 2022. The last one before that was back in 2011 at Atlanta Athletic Club, where Keegan Bradley defeated Jason Dufner in the three-hole aggregate playoff.

What site has hosted the most PGA Championships?

Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., is the all-time leader in PGA Championships hosted with five. Oak Hill is just behind with four, which Valhalla will tie at the conclusion of this year’s PGA.

What state has hosted the most PGA Championships?

New York has hosted the most PGA Championships with 14. This will be the fifth in Kentucky, all but one have been at Valhalla with Big Spring Country Club hosting the 1952 event in Jefferson County.

What are the future venues for the PGA Championship?

Future venues for the PGA Championship have been announced officially through 2031. 2034 will be at PGA Frisco, but 2032 and 2033 have yet to be announced. They are as follows:

2025 — Quail Hollow Club, Charlotte, N.C.

2026 — Aronimink Golf Club, Newtown Square, Pa.

2027 — The East Course at PGA Frisco, Frisco, Texas

2028 — The Olympic Club, San Francisco

2029 — Baltusrol Golf Club (Lower), Springfield, N.J.

2030 — Congressional Country Club, Bethesda, Md.

2031 — The Ocean Course Kiawah Island, South Carolina

2034 — The East Course at PGA Frisco, Frisco, Texas

Who is the favorite to win the 2024 PGA Championship?

At the moment of writing this, Masters champ Scottie Scheffler is the clear favorite to win the PGA, at least according to DraftKings. At +350 for outright winner, Scheffler is clear of fellow favorites Rory McIlroy (+900) and Jon Rahm (+1000) by a wide margin. Defending champ Brooks Koepka is in fourth when it comes to odds at +1600; Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Åberg round out the top six at +1800 apiece. Tiger Woods is currently at +10000. He was never truly in contention at Augusta National but did set a Masters record with his 24th-straight cut.

What will the weather be like for the 2024 PGA Championship?

We don’t want to jinx anything, but it looks like Valhalla will provide its golfers with some nice weather from May 16 through May 19, hopefully without any weather delays like in Augusta, Ga. Wind looks to pick up a bit over the weekend, however, it’s looking like temps are in the mid-60s to even high-70s with a bit of rain in the mornings. We’ll take it. Please don’t shoot the messenger if the weather reports change closer to the tournament.

What is Valhalla known for?

1408055513

Valhalla Golf Club is known for its beautiful rolling terrain with holes that weave through heavily wooded areas and a back nine renowned for creeks cutting through well-framed holes. The Nicklaus design is usually challenging and requires smart green play. A Golf Digest review went so far as to call it a “brute” to play, made up of almost two different courses from the front to the back.

Who broadcasts the PGA Championship?

This year’s PGA Championship will be broadcast between ESPN and CBS due to a joint contract between the two. ESPN replaced TNT in 2020 and holds rights to all of the early round and weekend morning coverage, including supplemental coverage on ESPN+. CBS will hold all rights to afternoon coverage of weekend rounds and will feature broadcasting legend Jim Nantz doing play-by-play.

Robert MacIntyre, PGA Tour, THE PLAYERS

Thanks to his superb play on the DP World Tour a season ago, which included a runner-up finish to Rory McIlroy at the Genesis Scottish Open , Robert MacIntyre earned PGA Tour membership for the 2024 season.

But playing on the PGA Tour has not been the best experience for MacIntyre, compared to the comfortable confines of the DP World Tour.

“It’s completely different,” MacIntyre explained to Bunkered , a Scottish golf publication.

“When you’re on the DP World Tour, it’s very friendly. Everyone is together. We’re all traveling the world. If we’re struggling with certain things, we speak to folk around us.”

So far this season, MacIntyre, who played in his first Ryder Cup in 2023 and did not lose a match, has only two top-10 finishes to his name. He tied for sixth at the Mexico Open and eighth at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Robert MacIntyre, Ryder Cup

But he missed the cut at The Players Championship and did not qualify for The Masters . He also has not met the criteria to play in any Signature Event so far this season. Instead, he tied for 32nd at the Puerto Rico Open, held when Scottie Scheffler triumphed at Bay Hill.

MacIntyre will also play at the Myrtle Beach Classic this week, not the Wells Fargo Championship , which bodes an elite 69-player field.

“You come out here to the PGA Tour, and it’s all so unfamiliar,” added MacIntyre.

“There’s less chatting. There’s less dinners. There’s just less of that big family feel that you get on the European Tour.”

The European Ryder Cup team specifically prides itself on team camaraderie and chemistry. By extension, those principles spread the DP World Tour, where the top European players rise through the ranks.

“Sitting in player dining, you do it in Europe and you’ve got all the Scottish boys, you’ve got all the British boys,” MacIntyre added.

Robert MacIntyre, PGA Tour

“A lot of the European guys, if you’re sitting on your own, they will come and join you... Out [on the PGA Tour], because you don’t know many folks, you don’t know them in that same kind of depth, they don’t come to sit with you. It does become a lonely place on the golf side of it.”

The golf courses are obviously different, too.

“It is what it is. You’ve got to get on with it. There are a lot of other things. New golf courses,” MacIntyre explained.

“Over here, they are pretty much all new, and then you’ve got the different grasses. Obviously, I was not brought up playing a lot of Bermuda, grainy grass, pitching, putting. It’s just completely different. But it’s a learning curve.”

Hopefully, MacIntyre’s experience of playing golf in the United States will improve as time passes. But for now, the Scotsman continues to struggle to grow accustomed to the difficulties of American professional golf—something that numerous European players have toiled with before and likely will do so in the future.

Yet, the Scotsman knows that plenty of opportunity awaits within the 50 states.

“It’s a great place to play golf. It’s obviously where the best players in the world are. It’s where you can make more money,” MacIntyre said.

“It’s a different environment for me, but I’m just trying to enjoy it as much as I can and learn as much as I can, week in and week out.”

This area where the East European Plain touches the Black Sea has seen habitation by civilizations stretching back to Scythian, Roman, Greek, and Ottoman times. In the 18th century, the Russian Empire started to lay a foothold by establishing outposts on this frontier, but then eventually with expansion of the empire it became more of a commerce center due to its premier trade location where the Black Sea meets the Don River. And it saw industrialization, too, causing it to draw people and become one of the largest Russian cities for a time. But it was not without adversity that it passed through the ages, as it saw incursions from the Russian Civil War, cholera epidemics, and occupation by the Germans during the Great World Wars. One of its darker moments was the execution of 30,000 Russian Jews by occupying Nazi forces at Zmievskaya Balka.

But today it is a peaceful metropolis full of green esplanades and theaters and cafes.

There are more than 1,000 objects of cultural heritage in the city, among them 482 architectural monuments, 70 archaeological monuments, eight large memorial complexes and 106 monuments. It is a major transport hub of the southern part of European Russia and a large educational and scientific center of Russia. So take a look at the city’s major points of interest. Our tips will make your trip to Rostov-On-Don unforgettable and full of interesting activities. https://www.instagram.com/p/BXex-Lzh8uV/?taken-at=213270263 Pushkin Street Take a look at this landscaped boulevard, lined with thousands of trees, flowers, restaurants, food kiosks, benches, memorials and statues. Pushkin Street leads into both the City Park and October Revolution Park. The biggest street of the city is always crowded and you can find a lot of activities there as a tourist. Undoubtedly the first place to go upon arrival, especially if you’re hungry. https://www.instagram.com/p/BYVR7KrHPyl/?tagged=%D1%80%D0%B5%D0%BA%D0%B0%D0%B4%D0%BE%D0%BD Don River Lookout Right after a visit to Pushkin Street, move to Don River lookout (aka, the Embankment) where you’ll enjoy a stroll along the riverside. The Embankment is lined with several restaurants, statues, fountains and a few souvenir shops; it also has an outstanding picturesque view. Yet it is considered to be the centre of Rostov’s nightlife. https://www.instagram.com/p/BYQtspxHtsu/?taken-at=1092801284125416 Rostov Zoo If you’re in travelling with children, then this zoo is well worth a visit. One of the largest zoos in Russia, it is home to a huge variety of animals, including giraffes, camels, polar bears, falcons, reptiles, fish and tigers. Located right in the city centre. https://www.instagram.com/p/BYQDpiIAGEU/?taken-at=879146942 Maxim Gorky Academic Drama Theatre. This theatre is a famous venue for dramatic plays, comedies and concerts in the Rostov area. It is located on the eastern end of Bolshaya Sadovaya Street (Teatralnaya Square 1), directly across the street from the monument known as ‘Stella’. Maxim Gorky Theatre operates even in summer when all other venues are closed. https://www.instagram.com/p/BNCnw_DA4Lo/?tagged=%D1%80%D0%BE%D1%81%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%B2%D1%80%D1%8B%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%BA Central Market This massive outdoor and indoor market, which consists of many tiny shops and kiosks, can be both exciting and intimidating for tourists. The market is located in the downtown area, on Stanislavskovo Street, just four blocks south of the central intersection of Bolshaya Sadovaya Street. https://www.instagram.com/p/BYXMs9Xjcsk/?tagged=%D1%80%D0%B5%D0%BA%D0%B0%D0%B4%D0%BE%D0%BD Bridges Over the Don River & Embankment This city network of bridges and overpasses was constructed between 2007 and 2010, and it consists of a steel and a concrete composite structures across the River Don. BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Chinese leader Xi Jinping will spend most of his five-day tour in Europe this week in two small countries in the continent’s eastern half, a region that Beijing has used as a foothold for its expanding economic ambitions in Europe.

Following a stop in Paris on Monday to kick off his first European trip in five years, Xi will travel to Hungary and Serbia , two nations with autocratic leaders that are seen as China-friendly and close to Russian President Vladimir Putin .

As mainstream European leaders have pursued more protectionist policies to limit Beijing and Moscow’s reach on the continent, the governments of nationalist conservative leaders Viktor Orbán of Hungary and Aleksandar Vučić of Serbia have courted economic ties with China , inviting major investments in infrastructure, manufacturing, energy and technology.

As the first European Union country to participate in Xi’s signature Belt and Road Initiative , Hungary has straddled a middle ground with its membership in the EU and NATO and an unusual openness to diplomatic and trade relationships with eastern autocracies.

FILE - A worker checks solar panels at a factory in Jiujiang in central China's Jiangxi province on March 16, 2018. The Biden administration is planning to announce new tariffs on electric vehicles, semiconductors, solar equipment and medical supplies imported from China. (Chinatopix via AP)

Tamás Matura, a China expert and associate professor at Corvinus University in Budapest, said Hungary’s hosting of major Chinese investments and production sites — and its agnosticism on doing business with countries with spotty democratic and human rights records — has opened a crucial door to China within the EU.

“The Hungarian government is the last true friend of China in the whole EU,” Matura said. “It is very important now to the Chinese to settle down in a country that is within the boundaries of the EU ... and is friendly to the Chinese political system.”

One of the major benefits to China of establishing bases within the EU is avoiding costly tariffs. The European Commission, the bloc’s executive arm, is considering raising duties on the import of Chinese electric vehicles from its current 10% to protect the European auto manufacturing market — a mainstay for Germany, the 27-member bloc’s largest economy.

Yet in December, Hungary announced that one of the world’s largest EV manufacturers, China’s BYD, will open its first European EV production factory in the south of the country — an inroad that could upend the competitiveness of the continent’s auto industry.

That shift is visible in Budapest, where one car dealership has begun scaling down its supply of European vehicles and introducing models produced by BYD.

Márk Schiller, the strategy and marketing director for the family-owned Schiller Auto Group, said he believes that European carmakers are “already behind” China in transitioning to EV production. His company recently stopped selling cars made by German carmaker Opel and switched to BYD.

“This was a huge shift,” Schiller said.

Hungarian state television on Monday appeared to confirm earlier reports that Xi and Orbán would travel to the southern city of Pécs to announce another EV manufacturing investment there involving China’s Great Wall Motor.

In a news conference later, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó castigated journalists for reporting on the potential deal, saying that those who mention specific companies before agreements are finalized are “clearly acting against Hungary’s national interests.”

The report on Xi’s potential trip to Pécs was later removed from the state television’s website. Orbán’s office didn’t respond to multiple requests for information on Xi’s schedule.

In Serbia, to Hungary’s south, China runs mines and factories across the Balkan country, while billions more in infrastructure loans have funded roads, bridges and new facilities.

Hungary and Serbia have an agreement with Beijing to modernize the railway between the countries’ capitals of Budapest and Belgrade, part of a Belt and Road plan to connect with the Chinese-controlled port of Piraeus in Greece as an entry point for Chinese goods to Central and Eastern Europe.

The bulk of the project, which after numerous delays is expected to be completed in 2026, is financed through loans from Chinese banks — the kind of capital that Hungary and Serbia have been eager to utilize.

According to the AidData research lab at William & Mary, a university in Virginia, Chinese lenders have issued loans worth more than $22 billion to nine countries in Central and Eastern Europe between 2000 and 2021.

Of that sum, $9.4 billion has gone to Hungary and $5.7 billion to Serbia, dwarfing the totals of other regional countries.

Vučić has said he is “honored” that Xi — whom he often describes as a “friend” — is visiting on Tuesday. He said before the visit that Serbia would seek further Chinese investment, particularly when it comes to advanced technologies.

But economic analyst Mijat Lakićević said he didn’t expect any major new investment deals, because “everything that Serbia does with China has already been agreed.”

Hungary, too, has created a favorable investment environment for China, providing generous tax breaks, subsidies and infrastructural assistance to Chinese companies, as well as helping them navigate Hungarian bureaucracy.

“They get the red carpets rolled out and they get everything tailor-made by the government. And that is a huge advantage,” said Matura, the China analyst.

Near Debrecen, Hungary’s second-largest city, construction is underway of a nearly 550-acre (222-hectare), 7.3 billion euro ($7.9 billion) EV battery plant, Hungary’s largest-ever foreign direct investment.

Orbán’s government hopes the factory, run by Chinese battery giant CATL, will make the country a global hub of lithium-ion battery manufacturing in an era where governments are increasingly seeking to limit greenhouse gas emissions by switching to electric cars.

Such investments are coming at a time when Hungary’s sluggish economy has been further hindered by record-setting inflation and the freezing of billions in EU funding that has been withheld over Orbán’s track record on democracy standards and the rule of law.

With EU money at a standstill, Matura said, China has been willing to fill in the gaps in Hungary’s budget.

“EU funds have almost came to full stop flowing into the Hungarian economy, so now there is a desperate need in Hungary to turn towards other alternatives, other sources of financial capital,” he said.

Orbán has been open about why he has prioritized Chinese investment: his belief that Western economies are declining, and that China is on the rise.

During a recent speech at the CPAC Hungary conservative conference, Orbán outlined a vision of a “global economy that will be organized according to the principle of mutual benefit, free of ideology.”

Gec reported from Belgrade, Serbia.

Angry-looking man taking microphone away from singer as another man runs to grab him.

A song and dance: Eurovision’s history of controversy

With a long track record of international spats and political statements, rows have become a familiar part of the show

T his year’s Eurovision song contest has been increasingly overshadowed by protests over Israel’s participation during its continuing war in Gaza. But controversy has often followed the international singing competition. Here are some notable previous Eurovision rows.

Stage invader interrupts SuRie

In 2018 a man invaded the stage in Lisbon during a performance of the UK entry Storm by SuRie, and yelled: “Nazis of the UK media, we demand freedom.” He was later identified as a man who had previously tried to disrupt broadcasts of the National Television Awards and The Voice. SuRie was offered the chance to perform the song again at the end of the final, but declined.

Ukraine cannot get its act together

In 2019 Ukraine withdrew from the contest after the artist selected to represent it, Maruv, refused to sign an agreement requiring her not to tour in Russia as part of accepting the nomination. With strained relations between the two countries after Russia’s unilateral annexation of Crimea in 2014, two potential replacement acts also refused the agreement, and Ukraine withdrew.

Ukraine’s song Dancing Lasha Tumbai causes stir, 2007

Ukraine’s 2007 entry, Dancing Lasha Tumbai by Verka Serduchka, sparked controversy for the way its nonsense lyrics “Lasha Tumbai” sounded like “Russia goodbye” when sung in the chorus.

Georgia entry refused for Vladimir Putin reference, 2009

Eurovision organisers refused to accept Georgia’s entry in 2009, when the country attempted to send a song called I Don’t Wanna Put In by Stephane and 3G. It was deemed to be a derogatory reference to Russia’s president.

Israel disowns its own song, 2000

Israel’s 2000 Eurovision entry, Same’ach by Ping-Pong, was disowned by the Israeli Broadcasting Authority after the band produced Syrian flags during a performance of their song, which was about an Israeli woman from a kibbutz having an affair with a man from Damascus.

Greece drops out in protest against Turkey being invited, 1975

During the 1970s, Greece and Turkey staged tit-for-tat boycotts. Greece dropped out in 1975, seemingly in protest at Turkey making its debut less than a year after the invasion of Cyprus. Turkey did not return in 1976, when the Greek entry seemed to explicitly reference the conflict.
