Then, continue with a stroll along the Old Port by the St. Lawrence River. It’s a fantastic place for a walk!

For the end of the day, head over to Mount Royal Lookout located in the park of the same name. You’ll have a breathtaking view of all of Montreal !

Mount Royal - The best view of Montreal

And for dinner, immerse yourself in Canadian culture by tasting the typical dish: poutine !

Make your way to La Banquise , a restaurant completely devoted to this beloved national dish, offering an extensive and delectable selection. La Banquise is nestled in the heart of the Mount Royal district , providing you with the perfect chance to explore this charming neighborhood, adorned with spiral-staircased houses and vibrant facades.

If you want to organize your own itinerary to visit Montreal in one day, have a look at my article: Top 33 Must-Do Activities in Montreal !

There, you’ll find all the things to do and see in the city. All you’ll need to do is pick based on your interests (Cultural tours, parks, shopping..).

Strong points: Prime location, beautiful architecture, friendly staff, and a luxurious spa. The best hotel in Montreal for a luxury stay !

2) The Thousand Islands (1 day)

The next day, things start getting serious on this one-week journey through Canada. Head to the Thousand Islands , located halfway between Montreal and Toronto! It’s the perfect pit stop to break up the drive and also enjoy the beautiful natural landscapes of Canada .

To get to the Thousand Islands from Montreal, it’s about a 3-hour drive.

The must-do tourist activity at the Thousand Islands is to take a boat cruise (around the Thousand Islands, of course!). Cruises depart from the towns of Rockport, Gananoque, or Kingston .

Cruises are available from May to October .

In any case, the boats can carry around 50 people. If you’re looking for a more intimate experience, you can also book a private boat just for you. Yep, as expected, it’s a bit more expensive. But trust me, the experience is totally worth it!

During the cruise, you’ll navigate among some of the 1,865 islands ! All of them are different: varying in size, inhabited or not; cabins, luxury houses, and even a castle have been built on them.

Thousand Islands

The castle located on Boldt Island has a unique story. Billionaire George Boldt had it built for his wife, but she died before it was completed. For over 70 years the castle was abandoned until the Thousand Islands Corporation bought it for a token euro. Nowadays, it’s a tourist attraction that you can visit.

The landscapes are truly breathtaking , and the cruise is very enjoyable. A true moment of relaxation during a 7-8 day stay in Eastern Canada.

To book your 3-hour cruise around the Thousand Islands, just click the button below:

The same cruise also comes in a shorter 1.5-hour version :

If your budget is a little higher, you also have the option to fly over the Thousand Islands in a helicopter !

You can book this activity by clicking on the button below :

  • Howard Johnson Gananoque : A motel located 1.5 km from the cruise departure point. Spacious and comfortable double room starting from €70 per night, breakfast included. Strong points: location, outdoor swimming pool, cleanliness, comfortable bedding, good breakfast, free parking. It’s my favorite for its excellent value for money!
  • Comfort Inn & Suites Thousand Islands Harbour District : Located a 5-minute walk from the boat departure point. Comfortable double room starting from €100 per night, breakfast included. Strong points: indoor swimming pool, free parking, breakfast, quality of service, location.
  • Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites 1000 Islands : Located 2 km from the cruise departure point. Modern and cozy double room starting from €150 per night, breakfast included. Strong points: indoor swimming pool, sauna, room comfort, good breakfast, tranquility.

3) Toronto (3 days)

Our third stop in this one-week itinerary through Canada takes us onward to Toronto . From the Thousand Islands, it’s a smooth 2.5-hour drive.

Once you hit Toronto , kickstart your exploration with a dive into the city’s main neighbourhoods :

  • Kensington Market, the bohemian district and one of the oldest in Toronto. This place is a massive hit with Street Art enthusiasts.
  • Chinatown , Toronto’s Chinese neighborhood, is your best bet for the city’s most affordable souvenirs. So, time to stock up on those magnets and mugs!
  • The Distillery District, a historical area transformed into a vast pedestrian zone. Filled with unique shops, art galleries, and hip cafés, it’s Toronto’s trendiest neighborhood.

When lunchtime rolls around, make your way to the St. Lawrence Market . This indoor market, over 200 years old, offers the chance to savor amazing local products. You can eat right there at the available tables. It’s a particularly welcoming and warm spot you have to check out.

For the afternoon, we’re off to meet the marine mammals at Ripley’s Aquarium . This is a must-visit in Toronto, being Canada’s largest aquarium home to over 16,000 creatures. Here, you’ll get to walk through an underwater tunnel , and touch rays and even sharks.

I must confess, I’m usually not the biggest fan of such activities, but this one is interactive and well-put-together. If you’re visiting Toronto with family , your kids are sure to love it, too!

To dodge the lines, I’d recommend booking your tickets in advance by clicking on the button below:

As the day winds down, I suggest heading up the CN Tower, Toronto’s iconic attraction. A panoramic elevator will whisk you up to 346 meters in a mere 58 seconds !

Here, you can walk on a transparent glass floor and marvel at the breathtaking panoramic views of the entire city. The experience is truly awe-inspiring! The best time to go up is at sunset.

For adrenaline junkies and thrill-seekers, why not try out the EdgeWalk ? Safely harnessed, you’ll get to walk along the tower’s outer edge , just a mere 1.5 meters wide! Just a heads up, this little scare will cost you a pretty penny – $225 (even the price is scary)! 😝 )

Finally, to end your day on a romantic note, consider dining at the CN Tower’s restaurant . The restaurant actually rotates during your meal, so you’ll enjoy a full 360-degree view of Toronto.

If you want to dig deeper into the city’s history , consider booking a guided tour of Toronto . Tours are available for all the major neighborhoods I just mentioned:

  • Guided tour of Kensington Market and Chinatown
  • Guided tour of the Distillery District
  • Guided tour at the St. Lawrence Market
  • Private guided walking tour with a local
  • Hop-on, hop-off bus tour with audioguide included.

CN Tower

For the following day in Toronto on this week-long Canadian trip, we’re heading to a rather unusual place: Casa Loma .

Casa Loma is an authentic medieval-style castle , an uncommon sight in Canada! Back in the day, a wealthy industrialist went all out with a whimsical $3.5 million splurge. Talk about living large! It should be noted that he quickly went bankrupt and didn’t get to enjoy it for long (poor chap…).

You can explore the many rooms of the castle , but the highlight is the view it offers from the top of the towers , simply one of Toronto’s finest.

The 2-hectare garden of Casa Loma is also a delight to stroll around, with its fountains, sculptures, and floral arrangements.

You can purchase your Casa Loma ticket right here:

The rest of the day in Toronto calls for a cultural expedition to the Royal Ontario Museum , the country’s largest museum. With its part old-stone architecture and glass and aluminum structure, you can’t miss it. Entrance tickets available by clicking here !

The museum covers various subjects from First Nations history to world cultures and natural history. They’ve got a whole area just for dinosaur fossils ! And as the big kid that I am, I have to say, it’s the absolute best part of the museum!

Next, to escape the city bustle and enjoy some greenery, I suggest you spend the afternoon on Toronto’s islands .

You’ll need to catch a ferry from Queens Quay , which takes just about 10 minutes. The ride gives you one of the best views of Toronto’s skyline . You’ve got to see it at night when it’s all lit up – even more stunning!

As the islands are car-free, I’d recommend renting a bike to explore . It’s peaceful and serene, with plenty of beaches to swim or relax and a lovely collection of 1920s holiday homes that are quite a sight.

If you’d rather, you could also go for a boat tour to see all the islands:

Not bad for a two-day itinerary in Toronto, right?

Don’t hesitate to check out my dedicated article on Toronto for more details on the city’s must-visit spots: Top 17 things to do in Toronto !

Casa Loma Toronto

As you continue your 6, 7, or 8-day adventure in Canada, don’t miss Ontario’s iconic attraction, the Niagara Falls ! They’re just a 1.5-hour drive from Toronto.

Niagara Falls are truly magnificent , a must-see when in Canada! The best and certainly most spectacular way to view them is by taking a cruise at the foot of the Falls . Dressed in your stunning poncho, you’ll get up close and personal with Niagara Falls and end up thoroughly soaked (but all in good fun).

Remember to book your tickets in advance to avoid waiting in line:

After the cruise, you could also go up the Skylon Tower and take in the falls from the panoramic terrace. Tickets can be booked right here !

The “Journey Behind The Falls” activity (click here to book your tickets) also allows you to reach an observation deck, but this time it’s located at the foot of the falls, via tunnels, 40 meters underground.

And if you want to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience, I recommend flying over the falls in a helicopter . If ever there was a place worth breaking the bank for, this is it. It’s a splurge you’ll remember forever, trust me!

When it comes to the city of Niagara Falls itself, don’t sweat about hanging around there too long. If you’re up for it, take a stroll down Clifton Hill , a street chock-full of attractions ranging from a wax museum to a haunted house. It’s worth a peek just to appreciate the cheesiness of it all!

For the rest of the day, hop onto the Niagara Parkway , a road hugging the Niagara River, stretching between Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The region is famous for its vineyards and the road offers gorgeous river views . You’ll eventually land in Niagara-on-the-Lake , a quaint and utterly charming village with its blooming narrow streets and period houses. What a day!

If you’d rather not bother driving in the big city, consider opting for a day-long organized tour .

I’d point you towards GetYourGuide . It’s the easiest way to enjoy the day without any stress – everything’s sorted. They even pick you up straight from your hotel and drop you back off in the evening.

The day includes:

  • The bus ride
  • A visit to Niagara-on-the-Lake
  • A photo stop along the Niagara Parkway
  • The famous boat cruise to the heart of the Falls
  • 3 hours of free time to wander and make the most of the day
  • Optionally, you can even choose to live an extraordinary experience by flying over Niagara Falls in a helicopter!

Book in advance by clicking on the green button below:

It’s not so easy to find a hotel that offers good value for money in Toronto . To help you out, I’ve prepared a list of the best hotels depending on your budget.

One last tip: If the place you’re attracted to is available, book it right away . Demand is very high in the city, and the best accommodations disappear (very) quickly!

  • The Clarence Park : This youth hostel is located a 10-minute walk from the CN Tower. Dormitory bed from €35 per night. Strong points: the location, the conviviality, curtains for dormitory beds, modernity. An excellent choice for budget accommodation in Toronto !
  • Margie Townhome Suites : This guesthouse is located a 5-minute walk from the Eaton Centre. Cozy and pleasant rooms starting from €110. Strong points: the location, the calm, proximity to the metro.
  • The Novotel Toronto Centre : Located right next to St. Lawrence Market. Contemporary and very spacious double rooms starting from €150. Strong points: indoor pool, location, excellent breakfast.
  • One King West Hotel and Residence : Nestled in Old Toronto, a mere 5-minute walk from the St. Lawrence Market. This joint boasts modern, spacious and elegant suites, complete with stunning city views, starting from €190, with a breakfast option at €17. Strong points: Prime downtown location, top-notch bedding, and the breathtaking views.
  • The Omni King Edward Hotel : For anyone looking to treat themselves during their Toronto escapade. This upscale hotel resides in the financial district, just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the Eaton Centre. Cosy double rooms with tasteful décor start from €300, with breakfast at an extra €23. Strong points: prime location, attentive staff, room décor, and comfort, as well as an excellent breakfast. A perfect choice for a luxury stay in Toronto or a romantic night with your partner !
  • Bisha Hotel Toronto : A 5-star hotel just 500m from the CN Tower. This establishment boasts superb rooms designed by none other than star Lenny Kravitz’s designer studio. Starting at a cool €390. Strong points: the infinity pool on the rooftop with views of the CN Tower, the hotel’s excellent restaurants, and an ideal location. The best hotel in Toronto for a luxury stay !

You may have noticed, staying in downtown Toronto isn’t exactly cheap, but that’s to be expected given it’s a bustling Canadian tourist hub.

If you’re looking to save a bit and don’t mind staying a bit further out, hotels near the Toronto Airport (about 17km from downtown) generally offer lower rates.

Here are a few suggestions:

  • Doubletree by Hilton Toronto Airport
  • Best Western Plus Travel Hotel Toronto Airport
  • Courtyard by Marriott Toronto Airport
  • Hampton Inn by Hilton Toronto Airport Corporate Centre

Niagara Falls

4) Ottawa (1 day)

After spending three days exploring Toronto and the Niagara Falls , continue your week-long Canadian road trip by heading towards Ottawa . Can you imagine touring Canada in a week and skipping its capital? Unthinkable!

Be prepared for a full morning of driving, roughly 4 hours and 15 minutes. It’s the longest leg of the trip, so I’d advise you to head out early in the morning so you can make it to Ottawa by lunchtime .

Speaking of lunch, make your way to the Byward Market . Here you can grab a quick bite from the delectable local produce, or sit down at one of the many restaurants in the area. For dessert, try the Beaver Tail , a traditional Canadian pastry that’ll rock your world.

Since the market is right next to Parliament Hill , the city’s main tourist attraction, you can continue your day by admiring the stunning site. All the Canadian Parliament buildings are nestled on this hill.

Next, I’d highly recommend a visit to one of the best and most fascinating museums in Canada, the Canadian Museum of History . To me, it’s the ultimate must-do cultural activity in Ottawa . Don’t forget to grab your tickets ahead of time by clicking here !

The museum details the history of Canada from the First Nations onwards. This is where you’ll find the world’s largest collection of totem poles ! It’s a well-curated and fascinating museum. To fully explore and appreciate its grandeur, you’ll need at least 3 hours.

As the day winds down, head to the Rideau Canal for a stroll along the banks of this UNESCO World Heritage site. And if you’re visiting Ottawa in winter , grab your skates! The Rideau Canal transforms into the world’s largest natural ice rink !

To uncover all the places of interest in Ottawa, check out my article: Best things to do and see in Ottawa !

If you’re not up for walking, there are several ways to discover Ottawa (click the orange links to book):

  • A hop-on hop-off bus tour
  • A narrated cruise on the Rideau Canal
  • An electric boat cruise
  • A guided tour on an amphibious bus : my favorite as it combines both bus and mini-cruise!

While Ottawa may be the capital of Canada, it’s still a small city.

So, the selection of accommodations is somewhat limited. You should book a room from my selection in advance and not to dally too long.

  • HI Ottawa Jail Hostel : This youth hostel is housed in a restored old jail. You’ll be sleeping in upgraded cells (I assure you!) Dorm bed from €30, breakfast included. Strong points: the uniqueness of the place, excellent location, and delicious breakfast. A great affordable choice for lodging in Ottawa !
  • The Business Inn : Hotel located 1.3km from Parliament Hill. Well-equipped studio with a kitchen starting from €100 per night, breakfast included. Strong points: prime location, spacious rooms, an in-room computer with printer, and the ability to cook for yourself. My absolute favorite for its unbeatable value for money in Ottawa!
  • Andaz Ottawa Byward Market-a concept by Hyatt : Located in the Byward Market neighborhood. Double room with modern and sleek decor from €190 per night, breakfast included. Strong points: great location, friendly staff, rooftop terrace, and an extensive and varied breakfast buffet.
  • Fairmont Château Laurier : 5-star hotel (the only one in Ottawa) located a 10-minute walk from Parliament Hill. Spacious and comfortable double room from €365 per night, breakfast included. Strong points: high-quality services, room comfort, indoor swimming pool, attentive and helpful staff. The best hotel in Ottawa for a luxury stay !

Colline du Parlement - Ottawa

5) Mont-Tremblant (1 day)

For the fifth and penultimate stop on your week-long journey through Eastern Canada, head over to Mont-Tremblant . The drive from Ottawa takes roughly 1 hour and 50 minutes.

On the way, I’d recommend making a pit stop to explore Omega Park, located in Montebello, about 50 minutes from Ottawa. Got kids with you? Here’s the perfect family activity ! At Omega Park, you can discover Canadian wildlife from the comfort of your car. It’s amazing! The animals roam freely, so you can feed and observe them up close. A fantastic experience!

By early afternoon, you should be reaching Mont-Tremblant. The best way to discover Mont-Tremblant is to go hiking in the park . One of the most accessible trails is La Roche and La Corniche .

You can also take part in water sports on the lake (in summer) or skiing (in winter). If you’re lucky enough to take this week-long Canadian road trip in the fall, you’ll be dazzled by the vibrant colors of the trees! And don’t forget to take a walk around the cute pedestrian village .

There are also 3 other super cool activities that I’d recommend trying out at Mont-Tremblant (depending on the season):

  • Book a helicopter ride over Mont-Tremblant and the Laurentians by clicking here!
  • Book a snowmobile tour – We can agree it’s one of the best activities to do in Canada in winter!
  • Book a 4km zip line ride over the Mont-Tremblant forest.
  • Auberge Manitonga Mont-Tremblant : This cozy youth hostel is only a 5-minute drive from Mont-Tremblant village and a 10-minute bus ride. Dormitory bed from €30 per night. Strong points: Great value for money, nearby lake, warm welcome, and pleasant surroundings. A fantastic budget-friendly choice in Mont-Tremblant !
  • Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham Mont Tremblant : Located a 5-minute drive from the village center. Spacious and inviting double rooms from €100 per night, including breakfast. Strong points: Indoor pool, room size and comfort, free parking, friendly staff. It’s my favorite for its value for money in Mont-Tremblant !
  • Château Beauvallon : Situated 10 min away from Mont-Tremblant. Well-equipped suite with balcony and kitchenette from €125 per night. Strong points: Indoor and heated outdoor pools, tranquility, shuttle service to Mont-Tremblant.
  • Le Grand Lodge Mont-Tremblant : This hotel is located on the shores of Lake Ouimet. Comfortable and spacious double rooms from €170 per night, breakfast at €17. Strong points: Stunning lake views, location, indoor pool, spa, the all-wood hotel style with fireplace in the rooms.
  • Fairmont Tremblant Hotel : This luxury hotel is nestled at the foot of Mont-Tremblant, right next door to the pedestrian village. Comfy double rooms starting at €300 per night, with breakfast for €30. Strong points: all the perks of a 5*, the location, heated pools, top-notch service, stunning facilities. The best hotel in Mont-Tremblant for a luxury stay !

Mont-Tremblant

All good things must come to an end, and today’s final leg of your 7-8 day Eastern Canadian journey brings you back to your starting point: Montreal .

The drive from Mont-Tremblant will take about an hour and a half. Depending on your return flight, you can head straight to the airport or choose to explore Montreal a bit more!

Happiness Promise

There are hundreds of thousands of guides and tour operators around the world. Figuring out who to trust is stressful and hard.

That’s why we started 10Adventures Tours, we’re here to make it easy to find a great guide or tour operator. We handpick the best local guides and tour operators for 10Adventures, working to ensure you have great guides and a great trip.

We know it sucks to show up in a different country and find out the tents are junk, the guide incompetent or the route different from what we thought we were getting.

We want to give our users peace of mind that you’ll have a great trip and offer a guarantee that we will work with you to make it right.

How does this work? Well, if you feel that something about your trip didn’t’ meet your expectations, let us know. We will then work to gather the details and figure out where things went wrong. If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.

Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.

We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email  [email protected]  and we will get to work right away.

Planning a trip to Canada and figuring out an itinerary may seem monumental due to the size and geographical layout of the country. Bordered by three oceans, the Canadian motto "from sea to sea to sea" becomes more relevant when you start planning a cross country tour.

Most travelers with limited time who are looking to plan an 8- or 10-day Canada itinerary, tend to focus on one area of the country. This is a good idea, unless you incorporate some long-distance internal flights. Canada stretches more than 5,500 kilometers from east to west, and much of the remote north is all but inaccessible.

The best option, unless you have plenty of time, is to focus your itinerary on Western, Central, or Eastern Canada. Western Canada is home to some of the country's most spectacular scenery, with mountains, glaciers, alpine lakes, and Pacific coastline. Central Canada is most well-known for its vibrant cities, including Toronto , Montreal , and Ottawa , but also consists of prairies and the lakes and forests of the Canadian Shield. Atlantic Canada , which includes the Maritime Provinces and Newfoundland and Labrador, is known for endless shorelines, quaint coastal villages, and friendly cities with a small-town atmosphere.

2. canada west coast itinerary: vancouver, vancouver island & whistler, 3. central canada: toronto, montreal & beyond, 4. eastern canada: nova scotia & prince edward island, 5. newfoundland: explore the rock, 6. exploring canada's north: polar bears, arctic landscapes & culture, 7. city hopping across canada, map of canada: great itineraries, when to travel in canada: best times to visit.

Moraine Lake

Western Canada Itinerary Highlights: Vancouver, Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley, Banff National Park, Jasper National Park, Lake Louise, Calgary

The best way to see the Canadian Rockies is by car, with a road trip beginning either in Vancouver and ending in Calgary, or doing it in the reverse order. A scenic seven-day trip will take you from Vancouver to Kelowna for a stop along the beautiful Lake Okanagan , and on to Banff National Park . From here, do a side trip up the Icefields Parkway to Jasper and end your trip in Calgary . This route runs through some of the most spectacular scenery in Canada.

Bow Lake on the Icefields Parkway in Banff National Park

Kelowna is a pleasant city that caters to skiers in the winter, with nearby ski resorts of Big White and Silver Star . These are two of the best ski resorts in Canada . In summer, this is a popular area for renting a cottage, golfing, or exploring the lakes by houseboat.

Banff and Jasper National Parks , including the area around Lake Louise , are highlights of this route, and offer some incredible day hikes . You can plan your own Banff to Jasper itinerary along the Icefields Parkway . Even if you are not interested in getting active, there are scenic pullouts along the Parkway to see the turquoise lakes, glaciers, waterfalls, and other sites.

The town of Banff , in the park of the same name, is a beautiful mountain tourist town with all kinds of accommodation, including camping . In town, the dining and shopping options are substantial, with too many stores and shops to count.

Downtown Canmore

Just outside the park to the east, the small mountain town of Canmore is a great base, with plenty of resorts if you don't want to stay in Banff. Beyond Canmore, an hour and a half east of Banff, is the city of Calgary , home to the famous Calgary Stampede held in July.

Flights run regularly between Calgary and Vancouver. Another option for returning to Vancouver is a train trip on the Rocky Mountaineer , a high end rail journey through the Rocky Mountains.

Vancouver

West Coast Itinerary Highlights: Vancouver, Whistler, Victoria, Salt Spring Island, Tofino

Spend a couple of days seeing the sights of Vancouver . Drive or catch a bus up to the posh ski town of Whistler for a day, a fun destination any time of year, and head back down to Vancouver where you can catch a ferry to Victoria , the capital of British Columbia. For some people, depending on how much time you allow in Vancouver and Victoria, this might be enough to fill seven days.

However, if you find you still have more time, plan a Vancouver Island itinerary or some excursions from Victoria. For a day trip from Victoria catch a car ferry to Salt Spring Island for a day of sightseeing, or visiting local farms and artisan studios.

Pacific Rim National Park in Tofino

With a few days available, you can plan a Vancouver Island Road Trip. Drive up Vancouver Island to Tofino for a night or two, where you can stay in one of the beautiful seaside resorts . Spend some time surfing or walking along the beaches in Pacific Rim National Park , enjoy some of the beautiful day hikes around Tofino or near the village of Ucluelet , and see the pristine coastal forest all along this remote stretch of the island.

A car makes this trip simple and is the best way to see the attractions. If you are using public transport, it will be cheaper and include a bus to Whistler and walk-on ferries to Victoria and Salt Spring Island. With a car, be aware that taking a car ferry may require some wait time, especially around holidays. If you add on a trip to Tofino a car is almost essential.

If you are looking for more things to do on Vancouver Island, consider taking the time to explore the best hikes on Vancouver Island , or set up your tent or RV at one of the scenic campgrounds . The campgrounds near Tofino are especially beautiful. You can also plan excursions out of Nanaimo and Parksville.

Toronto and CN Tower

Central Canada Itinerary Highlights: Toronto, Niagara Falls, Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec City.

With Toronto being a major point of entry for many travelers to Canada, this is the best place to start a tour of Central Canada. Spend a few nights in Toronto to see the sights, take in a Broadway show, and do a day trip to Niagara Falls . There are several tour operators offering day trips to the falls, which usually include a stop at the lovely little town of Niagara-on-the-Lake , one of Ontario's most romantic small towns.

From Toronto, you can drive or take a train to Ottawa , Canada's capital, to see Parliament Hill , some national museums, and in winter, you may even be able to skate along the Rideau Canal running through the city.

Montreal is another must-see city in Central Canada. You can get there easily from Ottawa, or directly from Toronto if you choose to skip Ottawa. Trains run regularly from both cities to Montreal, and by car, it is quite an easy drive (4.5 hours from Toronto to Ottawa, 5.5 hours from Toronto to Montreal, and two hours from Ottawa to Montreal).

With more time available, you can continue on to Quebec City to tour this historic French city. This is a city definitely worth visiting, and may even serve as an alternative to visiting Montreal if you are unable to visit both.

Peggy's Cove

Nova Scotia and PEI Itinerary Highlights: Halifax, Lunenburg, Charlottetown, Cape Breton Island

Eastern Canada is a large area and you may want to explore a region rather than try to see everything. Beginning with Nova Scotia and PEI is a good start. The most practical way to tour this area is with a car.

With eight to 10 days, you can easily see the highlights of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island . Begin in Halifax with some sightseeing around the city, and then spend a day touring the surroundings, with visits to Peggy's Cove and historic Lunenburg , before moving on to Annapolis Royal . From here, continue up and along the Bay of Fundy , making your way to the Confederation Bridge and over to Charlottetown , Prince Edward Island.

Take at least a day to explore the PEI, with a trip to Prince Edward Island National Park and Green Gables , the fictional home of Anne of green Gables. If the weather cooperates, take some time to enjoy the seashore. PEI's Brackley Beach with its long stretches of golden sand, is one of the best beaches in Canada . When you are ready to leave, take the Wood Islands Ferry to Caribou , Nova Scotia and head up to Cape Breton Island . There is plenty to see and do here, but the most popular activity is driving the scenic Cabot Trail , which runs through Cape Breton Highlands National Park.

If you have time, make your way out to Louisbourg to see the Fortress Louisbourg National Historic Site. From here you can head back to Halifax.

If you have another seven or 10 days for exploring the Maritimes, tack on a tour of Newfoundland .

Gros Morne National Park

Newfoundland Itinerary Highlights : St. John's, Gros Morne National Park, coastal towns

Start your Newfoundland itinerary with a stop in St. John's , the provincial capital, to explore Signal Hill National Historic Site and George Street , in the lovely downtown area. When you leave St. John's, take the scenic drive along Conception Bay and over to the Bonavista Peninsula to the charming town of Trinity. This scenic little seaside village with colorful houses looks out onto oceanfront cliffs. Tour some historic buildings to get a feel for the culture, take a whale-watching tour, or go for a hike. If you are visiting in the late spring, you may even see an iceberg.

From here, continue up the coast through Terra Nova National Park and on to the village of Twillingate to experience a quaint coastal community. After a night in Twillingate make your way to beautiful Gros Morne National Park , for a boat tour or some hiking in this spectacular landscape. Stay in the park at Rocky Harbour, Norris Point, or at nearby Deer Lake.

If you have more time, consider making a trip up to L'Anse Aux Meadows , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to see some Viking history. Afterwards, make your way back to St. John's. Keep in mind, driving in Newfoundland may take longer than you expect, with winding roads and last-minute decisions to turn off the highway and visit coastal towns or scenic areas.

Polar Bear

Northern Canada Itinerary Highlights: Churchill, Whitehorse, Yellowknife

There is no easy way to see all of Canada's north in one trip. The region is extremely remote, and the highlights are, in many cases, geographically distant from one another.

Here are some options for a Northern Canada itinerary:

If your goal is to see wildlife you should consider a trip to Churchill , Manitoba in the late fall to see the polar bear migration. Many different tours leave from Winnipeg , offering multi-day stays that include options to see the bears in a Tundra Buggy and stay in a Tundra Lodge. Most tours involve a flight from Winnipeg to Churchill, but it is also possible to take a train to Churchill.

The two main cities of the north are Whitehorse , in the Yukon , and Yellowknife , in the Northwest Territories . Both of these cities are accessible by car.

Many people incorporate the Yukon into a driving trip to Alaska . This route typically involves driving up through northern British Columbia and runs from Haines, going through Skagway, Carcross, Whitehorse, Dawson City, and into Alaska to the cities of Fairbanks and Anchorage , then back into the Yukon to Haines Junction and back to Haines. This route will give you a chance to experience some of the characters and cultures of the north, learn about the history of the Klondike Gold Rush, and see some of the beautiful landscape.

To reach Yellowknife , most people drive up the Mackenzie Highway from northern Alberta to Highway 3 running through Fort Providence. While in Yellowknife, be sure to get out on the waters of Great Slave Lake to battle the giant northern pike and trout waiting beneath the surface.

To see more of the north from Yellowknife, flights are in order. Possible options include side trips to Nahanni National Park , one of the jewels of Canada's north, or to the northern community of Inuvik, just 200 kilometers from the Arctic Circle, to see what life is like in the far north.

Old Montreal

Canadian Cities Itinerary Highlights: Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal (Optional: Calgary, Halifax, St. John's, Quebec City)

If you are looking for a cross-Canada cosmopolitan adventure, the key cities are Toronto , Vancouver , Montreal , and the nation's capital, Ottawa . But if you want to probe a little deeper, you could easily add on Calgary , Halifax , St. John's , and even a side trip from Montreal to Quebec City . There are regular flights to all of these destinations and quick and convenient train connections that run between Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa. Flights to the eastern cities of Halifax and St. John's are generally more expensive.

Toronto Skyline

Vancouver is arguably Canada's most beautiful city, while Toronto is a great place to see a show, take a day trip to Niagara Falls, and enjoy the view from the CN Tower.

Montreal is an incredibly vibrant city known for its French culture, shopping and fashion, and trendy Old Town . With extra time, you could add on a trip to Ottawa , between Toronto and Montreal, to tour some of the best museums in Canada.

Nature lovers could make a stop in Calgary for a quick trip out to Banff National Park and Lake Louise. For a more complete picture of Canada, catch a flight to either Halifax or St. John's to enjoy some seafood and experience the culture and friendly people of Atlantic Canada.

Planning a trip to Canada involves more than geographical considerations; the weather should be high on the list of things to research as well. Canada is so massive that the country can be experiencing four seasons on the same day. For example, on a typical June day, it could be 30 degrees Celsius, hot and humid in Central Canada, fogbound and cool in the Atlantic provinces, pleasant with cool sea breezes in Vancouver, and snowing in the Rockies or far north.

The best months to visit Canada are July and August . During these months, you'll get the warmest temperatures and have the best chance to do all the activities you have planned. However, this is when all the Canadians like to do things as well, so prices tend to rise and the most popular places can get crowded. If you can get away in September, you'll be rewarded with warm days, cool nights, and less crowded attractions.

Vancouver and coastal British Columbia along with Eastern Canada have temperate climates - it rarely gets too hot or too cold. The farther you move inland from the moderating effect of the oceans, the more extreme the temperatures get.

Planning a trip in the winter is less popular, unless you are a downhill skier or hardy outdoorsman. The best winter month for a ski trip is March, with its more moderate temperatures, sunny days, and copious snowfall. December is early for consistent snow conditions; January and February can be bone-chillingly cold and have short days.

Winter can also be a great time to experience the arts. Enjoy the ballet, symphony, and theater, or spend some time at the museums.

2024 RBC Canadian Open TV schedule, live stream, where to watch, channel, tee times, radio, golf coverage

The canadian open takes center stage this week hoping to follow the fireworks of last year's tournament.

rbc-canadian-open-new-flag-g.png

The 2024 RBC Canadian Open will look a little different this year as the tournament returns to Hamilton Golf & Country Club for the first time since 2019 and seventh time in event history. Five years ago, it was Rory McIlroy who blitzed the field by seven for the first of his two Canadian Open titles, but last year, it was Nick Taylor who became a local hero.

Beating Tommy Fleetwood with a 72-foot eagle putt on the third playoff hole, Taylor became the first Canadian in 69 years to claim his home country's open. Taylor immediately vaulted himself into legend status with the win and ensuing celebration -- so much so that his silhouette is now part of the tournament logo.

Canadians will hope to break another drought this week as countrymen have not won the Canadian Open in back-to-back years since 1913-14. The field is littered with those representing the maple leaf with household names like Corey Conners, Mackenzie Hughes, Taylor Pendrith, Adam Svensson and the man who was tackled celebrating Taylor's victory, Adam Hadwin.

This crop of Canadians will need to not only contend with two-time tournament winner McIlroy but also the likes of Tommy Fleetwood and Tom Kim -- all in an event that has slowly turned into one of the best on the PGA Tour calendar.

Erratic day off the tee drives McIlroy back into chasing pack in Canada

Erratic day off the tee drives McIlroy back into chasing pack in Canada

TEE'D OFF: Rory McIlroy hit this tee shot on the fourth hole during the second round of the Canadian Open golf tournament in Hamilton, Ontario, Friday May 31, 2024. Pic: Nathan Denette/The Canadian Press via AP

Rory McIlroy drifted back into the chasing pack on a frustrating Friday at the RBC Canadian Open where Ryder Cup teammate Bob MacIntyre heeded his father’s advice all the way to the top of the leaderboard.

McIlroy had enjoyed a really solid opening-round 66 on Thursday morning at Hamilton Golf and Country Club but with a Friday afternoon tee time in a marquee grouping that attracted huge crowds, the Holywood native and Canadian playing partners Nick Taylor and Taylor Pendrith failed to live up to the noise and colour.

McIlroy’s two-over 72 dropped him to two-under overall, eight shots behind halfway leader MacIntyre. It was a disappointment but not nearly as much of a letdown as Taylor’s 71 which left the reigning champion on three-over and missing the weekend of his defence. Shane Lowry wrestled with his putter in an up-and-down second round but grinned his way to a 68 which saw him make the cut.

Five years ago at this same course, McIlroy won the first of a pair of Canadian Open titles with Lowry runner-up. If they’re to repeat their Hamilton heroics this weekend, both will have to find much-improved consistency. It appeared the close friends were acutely aware of as much, Lowry spotted on the putting greens long after his morning round had wrapped up and McIlroy skipping media duties to head straight to the driving range later in the evening.

McIlroy’s blemish-free card on Thursday had started with nine-straight pars and he began in a similar vein Friday parring his way to the seventh where an errant drive, far from his first on a particularly erratic day with the big stick, put him in trouble and he carded his first bogey of the week. Another followed at the 10th and while he picked up a birdie on par-four 12th, he duly bogeyed the next, a short hole designed as an ice hockey rink with raucous crowds up both sides.

Facing into a hectic spell of the season with two elevated events either side of the US Open at Pinehurst over the next month, the struggles off the tee don’t bode well. McIroy has yet to make a birdie a par five after 36 holes on a scoreable course. Lowry needed all of his resolve to hang on through some erratic play of his own, the Offaly native offsetting five birdies with three bogeys to leave him just on the right side of the cutline. It was the 11th cut safely made in 12 events in 2024 for Lowry who’ll be hoping for some of the sizzling Saturday touch he found at Valhalla earlier this month.

It was MacIntyre who was firing Friday as he hunts a first ever PGA Tour victory in his rookie season across the Atlantic. Father Dougie answered an SOS and flew out from Scotland to be on his bag this week and so far the family act has work a charm.

“We’re trying to have as much fun as we can,” MacIntyre said. “This is an experience for the both of us, and he’s done a good job so far. It’s enjoyable. It’s taken my mind completely off the game of golf … I’ve only been home really three weeks since Jan. 3, so I don’t get to see my dad much. I phoned him, emergency phone call to come here last week. He jumped at the chance. It's good to just spend an extra week with loved ones.”

Waterford native Seamus Power looked on track to make his first Canadian Open cut until a disastrous triple bogey 7 on the short par-four fifth, his 14th. He finished with a 71 to sit on three-over.

Countdown to the 2024 Critérium du Dauphiné: Excitement Mounts in Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule

T he 76th Critérium du Dauphiné starts this Sunday, June 2, with a 174.8-kilometer road race that starts and ends in Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule–and we can’t wait! This 8-day mini- Tour de France offers everything we love about its larger, more prestigious cousin, including several of the Tour’s top contenders, stages that offer something for every kind of rider, and even a yellow leader’s jersey that matches the Tour de France maillot jaune .

Like many European bike races, the Critérium du Dauphiné (we just call it “the Dauphiné”) was originally created to promote a local newspaper, the Dauphiné Libéré, a provincial newspaper that covers the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of south-central France—the area that the race calls its home. In fact, the race was actually called the “Dauphiné Libéré” until 2010, at which point it was taken over by the Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.), the organizers of the Tour de France .

The race highlights one of the most beautiful regions in France, an area that includes the Alps, Mont Ventoux, and the Massif Central. This gives the organizers lots of options when it comes to building a challenging course, and they often create stages that mirror those in the upcoming Tour de France. This is one of the main reasons why it’s a popular dress rehearsal for General Classification riders hoping to be at their best for the French grand tour.

And it’s not uncommon for riders to win the Critérium du Dauphiné and then the Tour de France six weeks later. Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard-Hansen did it last year with Jumbo-Visma. Team Sky made winning both races a habit in the 2010s, with Britons Chris Froome winning both events in 2013, 2015, and 2016, and Geraint Thomas winning the Dauphiné-Tour combo in 2018.

It’s also a race that has traditionally favored Americans. Five riders from the United States have won the prestigious event in its 75-year history, and we wouldn’t be surprised if America makes it six by the time the race wraps up on the Plateau des Glières next Sunday.

Here’s everything you need to know about the 2024 Critérium du Dauphiné, one of the most exciting and important week-long stage races of the season:

[table-of-contents] stripped

The 2024 Route

This year’s Dauphiné covers 1203.8 km (746 mi) spread over eight stages. The race begins Sunday with Stage 1, a jagged road stage around Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule that–despite three categorized climbs early in the stage–should end with a field sprint.

But Monday’s Stage 2, a 142-kilometer road stage that begins in Gannat, definitely won’t. That stage contains four categorized climbs, including two Category 2 ascents on the way to an uphill finish on the Col de la Loge. This could be an early day for the Dauphiné’s General Classification contenders to try and take the yellow leader’s jersey. If they don’t, the stage will certainly go to a breakaway filled with puncheurs .

Stage 3 continues this year’s punchy trend with a hilly route filled with five categorized climbs. The 181.2-kilometer stage begins in Celles-sur-Durolle and ends with an uphill finish on the Category 3 climb to Les Estables, a 3.8km climb with an average gradient of 5.2 percent.

Wednesday brings Stage 4, a 34.4-kilometer individual time trial from Saint-Germain-Laval to Neulise. This should cause the first real shuffling of the General Classification of the race, with men like Primož Roglič (BORA-hansgrohe) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step) among the favorites to win the stage and take the yellow jersey.

Thursday’s Stage 5 is the longest stage of the Dauphiné, a 200.2-kilometer ride from Amplepuis to Saint-Priest. Even with four categorized climbs spread throughout the stage. This should be the last chance for the sprinters–unless a breakaway ruins their plans.

And then come the mountains, starting with Friday’s Stage 6, a 173.2-kilometer stage that starts in Hauterives and ends with a summit finish on the hors categorie (“Beyond Category”) Collet d’Allevard, an 11.1km climb with an average gradient of 8.1-percent.

Starting in Albertville, Stage 7 is even harder, with four Category 1 ascents and then a summit finish on the hors categorie climb to the Samoëns 1600 ski resort–all crammed into just 145.5 km. The climb to Samoëns 1600 is a beast: 10 km long, the climb averages 9.3 percent–and even that’s a bit misleading thanks to the opening kilometer’s 3.3 percent average gradient. With over 4,200m of elevation gain, this is the hardest stage in this year’s Dauphiné.

But just in case the race hasn’t been decided yet, Stage 8 ends the week with a bang. Beginning in the town of Thônes–near the base of the Category 1 Col de la Forclaz de Montmin–the 152.5km stage takes the riders over three categorized climbs before yet another summit finish, this time on the Category 1 Plateau des Glières. This is another short, intense stage that should provide an exciting conclusion to the 2024 Critérium du Dauphiné.

If you have cable and prefer conventional television viewing, each stage of the Dauphiné will be shown on CNBC. This year, the network looks set to show replays, as–according to NBC’s website–Stage 1 is scheduled to air at 1:00 p.m. EDT, a few hours after the stage is expected to end.

How to Watch Critérium du Dauphiné in Europe

The Critérium du Dauphiné will be broadcast in the United Kingdom and around Europe on Discovery+ , which carries Eurosport ’s live coverage. The Basic plan is priced at £3.99 per month or £39.99 annually in the UK (7-day free trial included), and it can be integrated into your Amazon Prime Video account.

What Happened Last Year

As it did the year before (sorta), the 2023 Critérium du Dauphiné served as a bit of a crystal ball heading into the Tour de France, with Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard and Jumbo-Visma dominating the race from start to finish. In all, the Dutch super-team won four stages, with France’s Christophe Laporte winning Stages 1 and 3 (and the green jersey as the winner of the Points Classification) and Vingegaard winning Stages 5 and 7 on his way to winning the race overall. The Dane won his second consecutive Tour de France six weeks later.

Great Britain’s Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) finished second–he went on to finish third at the Tour de France–and Australia’s Ben O’Connor (AG2R Citroën Team) finished third. Spain’s Carlos Rodriguez won the white jersey as the Dauphiné’s Best Young Rider, and Italy’s Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo) won the polka dot jersey as the Dauphiné’s King of the Mountains.

Riders to Watch

Primož Roglič (BORA-hansgrohe)

Roglič won the Critérium du Dauphiné in 2022 and is once again using the French WorldTour stage race as a dress rehearsal for the Tour de France. The Slovenian was one of the victims of the horrible crash in April’s Itzulia Basque Country –the same crash that took down Vingegaard, who won’t be participating in this year’s Dauphiné due to his injuries (he’s at a training camp instead).

Roglič abandoned the Basque race immediately–despite being the race leader at the time–but he was among the less injured of the riders who went down. So, while he was forced to skip the Ardennes Classics, he remained largely on track for the Tour.

The Dauphiné will be his last stop before heading to the Grand Depart in Florence, and his performance here will go a long way toward determining whether or not he has a realistic chance of winning his first Tour de France. And his BORA-hansgrohe team is stacked, with basically all the riders we expect to support the Slovenian at the Tour joining him at the start, including Australia’s Jai Hindley, who won a stage and spent a day in the yellow jersey in last year’s Tour de France–and won the 2022 Giro d’Italia .

Remco Evenepoel (Soudal–Quick-Step)

Evenepoel was another victim of the Basque crash that took down Vingegaard and Roglič–the Belgian broke his right clavicle and scapula. That wiped out the rest of his spring program, but now he’s healed and back on his bike–and reports say that his training is going well. Like most competitors, the Dauphiné will be the Belgian’s last test before the Tour. He’s likely targeting the time trial–he’s the reigning world champion in the discipline–but we’re more eager to see how he fares against the other contenders on the summit finishes at the end of Stages 6, 7, and 8. We’re also curious to see how his team–which has traditionally been built more for one-day classics–handles itself against proven stage race squads like BORA, Visma, and INEOS.

Carlos Rodríguez (INEOS Grenadiers)

Rodríguez finished ninth overall and won the white jersey as the Best Young Rider in last year’s Dauphiné, an impressive ride that perhaps should have been more hyped (blame jumbo-Visma’s dominance for that). But his performance turned out to be a sneak preview of what the Spaniard would do at the Tour, where he finished fifth overall and won a stage in the mountains.

Just 23 years old, Rodríguez has continued to improve throughout the spring: he finished second at Itzulia Basque Country and then won the Tour de Romandie, his first WorldTour stage race victory. Assuming he’s saving his best for the Tour, we’re expecting another top-10–possibly top-5–finish at the Dauphiné, which would make him a true podium contender in July.

Sepp Kuss (Visma–Lease a Bike)

With Vingegaard uncertain about riding the Tour de France following his crash, Kuss might end up being Visma’s GC captain, a stunning turn of events for a rider who spent much of last season as a support rider–at least until he took a surprise win at the Vuelta a España in September.

The American has had a quiet season so far, racing just a handful of times and spending the majority of his time at training camps. In fact, the Dauphiné will be the first time raced since the Itzulia Basque Country in early April. His performance will give us at least a hint as to whether or not he has the legs to be a true podium contender at the Tour.

Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates)

Ayuso joins Rodríguez at the forefront of a new generation of young, Spanish grand tour contenders. Just 21 years old, he already has two top-5 finishes at the Vuelta a España , including a third-place finish in 2022. Like Rodríguez, he seems to get better with every race he enters–he took second at Tirreno-Adriatico and fifth at the Tour of Romandie. And like Rodríguez, the Spaniard also won his first WorldTour stage this spring–the Tour of the Basque Country. And while he’s heading to the Tour to support Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar , we’re expecting him to be racing for himself at the Dauphiné–which could be bad news for the race’s other contenders.

Matteo Jorgenson (Visma–Lease a Bike)

If an American does win this year’s Critérium du Dauphiné, don’t be surprised if it’s Jorgenson, a 24-year-old who was born in Walnut Creek, California but grew up in Boise, Idaho. After spending the first few seasons of his WorldTour career with Movistar, Jorgenson transferred to Visma-Lease a Bike this past off-season and has since taken a major step forward, winning his first WorldTour stage race–Paris-Nice-and his first major one-day Classic–Dwars door Vlaanderen.

His last event was the Amstel Gold Race in mid-April, and he’s spent the past six weeks training for the Tour de France. And with Kuss likely biding his time for the Tour de France, there’s a good chance that he’ll be given the chance to try and win the Dauphiné before taking on more of a supporting role at the Tour. Visma has only scratched the surface of Jorgenson's potential, and this could be the race in which he takes another big step forward in his development as a rider.

The eight-day mini-Tour de France begins this Sunday with a 174.8 km stage and features top contenders, diverse stages, and the iconic Yellow Leader’s Jersey.
