AC/DC Announce European Tour — With New Drummer and Bassist

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

AC/DC are hitting the road for the first time in eight years. The hard rock band announced a European stadium tour Monday morning that kicks off May 17 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, and wraps up August 17 in Dublin, Ireland.

It’s a new lineup of AC/DC featuring drummer Matt Laug, who played with the group during their one-off Power Trip performance last year, and former Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney “carrying the torch” for bassist Cliff Williams.

But when the band reconvened to record 2020’s Power Up , Johnson was back in the fold thanks to a new hearing aid technology. They also made peace with Back in Black -era drummer Phil Rudd, who left the group in 2015 thanks to some fairly serious legal issues in New Zealand that were ultimately resolved. He was asked to rejoin the group for the recording of Power Up.

“I speak for all the boys with Phil,” Johnson told Rolling Stone in 2022. “We defend Phil to the hilt. What happened up there, that’s not the Phil we know. That was just something else. He’s really looking brilliant now and doing everything great.”

It’s unclear if AC/DC’s Power Up tour will head to America after the European run. It’s also unclear if Williams and Rudd are out of the band or just standing on the sidelines for this one run. But fans have waited a long time to see AC/DC in any form, and this is going to be a huge tour.

The Pretty Reckless to Support AC/DC on Upcoming European Tour

The Power Up Tour launches in May

The Pretty Reckless live

This summer, AC/DC are returning to the road for the first since 2016. The massive run is a celebration of the hard rock hitmakers’ 50th anniversary, and their first time supporting their latest album on tour. The global trek begins with a run across Europe this summer, starting at Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany on 17 May. The Power Up Tour will see the group performing in Spain, Austria, Belgium, France, the UK, and more. Very special guests for the run will be American rockers The Pretty Reckless.

Due to overwhelming demand, second shows were added in Seville, Spain, Dresden, Germany, and Hannover, Germany. Check out the full tour itinerary below. More dates around the world are expected to be announced very soon.

The Pretty Reckless are not strangers to the big stage, having supported Shinedown on their Revolutions Live Tour in 2022, and the Foo Fighters last year. The Pretty Reckless released their acclaimed fourth album, Death by Rock and Roll , back in 2021. The album features special guest appearances by Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil and Pearl Jam’s Matt Cameron on “Only Love Can Save Me Now,” and Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello on the hit single, “And So It Went.” The album peaked at No. 5 in Germany and No. 6 in the UK. It topped the UK Rock & Metal Albums chart, and scored Top 5 notches on Billboard’s Top Rock and Top Hard Rock Albums charts.

Back in January, The Pretty Reckless entered the studio to begin work on their fifth album.

Last October, AC/DC made their triumphant return to the stage after a seven year hiatus. The band performed after Judas Priest with previously retired bassist Cliff Williams and drummer Matt Laug sitting behind the kit. While they didn’t scratch any songs off  this list , they did  debut two tracks  from their 2020 album,  Power Up  – “Demon Fire” and “Shot in the Dark.” The band’s seventeenth studio album,  Power Up  peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and topped the charts in several other countries around the world.

The rest of the set was filled with some of the band’s biggest hits, and several rare gems that haven’t seen the lights of a stage in decades.

AC/DC kicked off their set with their 1979 fan favorite, “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It).” It was the first time the band opened with the song in 20 years. From there, they launched into their massive hit, “Back in Black.” The played “Dog Eat Dog” for the first time with frontman Brian Johnson since 1996, and “Riff Raff” for the first time with Johnson on the mic since 2009. AC/DC played both songs back in 2016 when Axl Rose of fellow Power Trip performers Guns N’ Roses was filling in for Johnson on vocals. Johnson was forced to step away from the band while dealing with hearing loss. Axl played the final 22 shows of AC/DC’s Rock or Bust Tour.

AC/DC also pulled out “Stiff Upper Lip” for the first time since 2003. Other highlights included “Shot Down in Flames,” “Thunderstruck,” “Have a Drink on Me,” “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap,” “Shoot to Thrill,” “Rock ‘n’ Roll Train,” “Highway to Hell,” “Whole Lotta Rosie,” and many more.

While bassist Cliff Williams has retired from touring, the band has confirmed that Chris Chaney (ex-Jane’s Addiction, Alanis Morissette) will be joining them on tour. Another alumnus of Alanis’s band – drummer Matt Laug – will once again be performing with AC/DC on the upcoming run of dates. Laug made his debut with AC/DC at Power Trip back in October.

“We are thrilled to finally announce the Power Up European Tour,” AC/DC said. “Angus [Young], Brian [Johnson], Stevie [Young], and Matt [Laug] will be joined by Chris Chaney to carry the torch for Cliff. The tour will see us play shows across Germany, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, England, Slovakia, Belgium, France & Ireland this Summer. We can’t wait to see you all out there.”

AC/DC live

AC/DC’s performance at Power Trip a few months ago saw the band take the stage with frontman Brian Johnson, lead guitarist Angus Young, rhythm guitarist Stevie Young, bassist Cliff Williams, and drummer Matt Laug. In July of 2016, Williams announced that he would be retiring after the completion of the band’s Rock or Bust World Tour. He returned to the fold, however, in 2018 to record bass on the band’s new album,  Power Up .

The confirmation of Laug’s involvement with the band for the Power Trip was most likely connected to legal issues stemming from original drummer Phil Rudd’s 2014 arrest. Rudd was charged with attempting to procure the murder of two men, according to New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty Police District representative Kim Perks at the time. He was also charged with threatening to kill, possession of cannabis, and possession of methamphetamine. A day after he was arrested, one of the charges for attempting to procure a murder was dropped. In April of 2015, Rudd pleaded guilty to the remaining charges at the Tauranga District Court (New Zealand). In July of 2015, he was sentenced to eight months of home detention plus a $120,000 USD fine.

Laug is a storied rock music drummer, having done stints with Alice Cooper, Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs, Slash’s Snakepit, and Alanis Morissette, as previously mentioned.

At the time of his arrest, Rudd had already completed recording drums for AC/DC’s sixteenth studio album,  Rock or Bust , which came out just days later on November 28. Despite Rudd playing on the record, AC/DC recruited former Shogun drummer Bob Richards to fill in for Rudd in two music videos the band shot for the album amid Rudd’s ongoing legal issues at the time. In February of 2015, AC/DC recruited former drummer Chris Slade to play with them at the 57th Annual GRAMMY® Awards. Slade was a member of AC/DC from 1989-1994 and played drums on their 1990 album  The Razor’s Edge . The album hit #2 on the Billboard Top 200 and contains some of the band’s biggest hits. To date, the disc has sold over 5 million copies in the U.S. alone. Slade also appears on the band’s 1992 live effort,  AC/DC Live . Slade would then join the band for their massive Rock or Bust World Tour, which began on May 5 at the Gelredome in Arnhem, Netherlands.

While best known for his stints with AC/DC, Slade has also performed with the likes of Asia, Gary Numan, Manfred Man’s Earth Band, Terra Nova, Bloodstock, David Gilmore, Uriah Heep, Gary Moore, Tom Jones, The Firm, Damage Control, and others.

In 2020, AC/DC released their seventeenth studio album,  Power Up . The record peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and topped the charts in several other countries around the world. Once again, Angus and Malcolm Young’s nephew Stevie Young, who took over rhythm guitar duties for Malcolm after he stepped away from the band in 2014 due to his declining health, played on the record. Malcolm Young passed away back in 2017.

AC/DC announce POWER UP European tour support, The Pretty Reckless

AC/DC have confirmed that they’ll be joined by The Pretty Reckless on all 24 dates of their highly-anticipated POWER UP European tour this summer.

AC/DC announce POWER UP European tour support, The Pretty Reckless

Exciting news! The Pretty Reckless will be back in Europe and the UK this summer, following their 2022 Death By Rock And Roll headline tour.

The New York rock titans – vocalist and guitarist Taylor Momsen, guitarist Ben Phillips, bassist Mark Damon and drummer Jamie Perkins – will be crossing the pond in order to support none other than AC/DC on the band’s highly-anticipated POWER UP run. They’ll be direct support on all 24 dates of the tour, from the opening night at Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany on May 17, to the final gig in Dublin, Ireland at Croke Park on August 17.

The news arrives shortly after The Pretty Reckless celebrated the 10th anniversary of their iconic album Going To Hell earlier this month. Speaking with Spin , Taylor reflected that the record “changed our lives. Even though we maybe didn’t see it at the time, we certainly are feeling the effects of it to this day. First, it made us double down on our ethics. It gave us the confidence to go, ‘We’re doing the right thing by doing it this way,’ and continued us on the path that we’re still on.”

Power Up Tour - Europa 2024

Olympic stadium.

AC/DC

The rock legends are back - and are ringing the bells of hell once again. Even after more than 50 years of the band's history, Angus Young and his comrades-in-arms continue to tour tirelessly. On 9 and 12 June, AC/DC will once again shake the Olympic Stadium to its foundations: at the double open air under the tent roof with the old hits and the current hits from their number 1 album "Power Up".

"Highway To Hell" and "Hells Bells", "Thunderstruck" and "T.N.T.": immortal anthems from the rock Olympus. AC/DC's sensational success story began more than 50 years ago with their very first concert on New Year's Eve 1973 at Chequers Nightclub in Sydney. They also have a long history with Munich. In 1976, they came to Munich for two gigs, a guest appearance at the unforgotten PN Club in Leopoldstraße 23 and at Circus Krone. This was followed a year later by a memorable concert at the Schwabinger Bräu - as Harry Belafonte's backing band. What a colossal combination.

From 1980, AC/DC then played the Olympic Hall nine times, plus the Olympic Stadium four times in 2001, 2009 and at a double concert in 2015 - only to return for their first European tour in eight years for two big open airs under the tent roof. Naturally with Angus Young in his obligatory school uniform on lead guitar, with singer Brian Johnson, rhythm guitarist Stevie Young and two new band members: drummer Matt Laug, who has already played for Alice Cooper and Alanis Morisette - and bassist Chris Chaney, ex-member of the alternative rock band Jane's Addiction. AC/DC is back. Back in black.

AC/DC Announces New Lineup And Long Awaited Tour

Jeff

AC/DC are back! These titans of the hard rock scene shook off a huge break to announce their explosive return to the stage. With a slightly altered lineup—Matt Laug steps in for Phil Rudd on drums, and Chris Chaney carries the bass lines instead of Cliff Williams—the heart of the band remains strong. Brian Johnson’s iconic vocals, alongside Angus and Stevie Young’s legendary guitar work, are fueled by that irresistible AC/DC spirit.

On the tour the band says,

We are thrilled to finally announce the ‘Power Up’ European Tour,” “Angus, Brian, Stevie, and Matt will be joined by Chris Chaney to carry the torch for Cliff. The tour will see us play shows across Germany, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, England, Slovakia, Belgium, France & Ireland this Summer. We can’t wait to see you all out there.

AC/DC Announces 2024 ‘Power Up’ Tour Dates and New Lineup

AC/DC has announced that they will tour Europe this summer with a brand-new lineup.

The 21-date Power Up tour will kick off May 17 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany and is scheduled to conclude on Aug. 17 in Dublin, Ireland.

You can see a complete list of tour dates below. Tickets go on sale Feb. 16.

According to the band's X (formerly Twitter) posts, drummer Phil Rudd and bassist Cliff Williams will not be performing at these dates. Lead guitarist Angus Young , singer Brian Johnson and rhythm guitarist Stevie Young will be joined by Matt Laug on drums and former Jane's Addiction bassist Chris Chaney.

Rudd missed AC/DC's 2015-16 Rock or Bust tour due to his well-documented legal troubles . He returned to record 2020's Power Up album but was replaced by Laug at the group's only concert since that time, which took place in October 2023 at the Power Trip festival in Indio, Calif.

Williams announced his retirement after the Rock or Bust tour due to what he described as a bout with " terrible vertigo ," but returned for the recording of Power Up and for the Power Trip performance.

AC/DC Return From Long Layoff

The announcement comes four months after AC/DC made their triumphant return to the stage with their performance at the Power Trip festival. The gig marked the Aussie rockers’ first concert since 2016 and brought to an end the longest show-free stretch of the band’s career.

The Power Trip set was also AC/DC’s first performance since the death of founding member Malcolm Young. The rhythm guitarist was replaced by his nephew, Stevie Young, who also played on the group’s 2020 album Power Up .

AC/DC has yet to tour in support of Power Up . The album was recorded in 2018 and 2019, but released in 2020 – right as the COVID-19 pandemic brought the live music industry to a halt. Johnson, who had dealt with severe hearing loss for years, was also testing experimental hearing aid technology. At the time, he was still unsure if he’d be able to perform with AC/DC again, however a handful of successful guest appearances – including a memorable performance at the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert in London – left Johnson confident he could return to touring again.

“I walked out there, the roof lifted up off Wembley and I sang my little heart out,” he recalled of the Hawkins show . “I did two songs and the place went absolutely crackers. I think I floated off. It was absolutely wonderful. So we knew [the hearing aids] worked. We were absolutely jumping for joy at the side of the stage. It was something special.”

"Are you ready?" Are AC/DC about to announce a world tour?

AC/DC seem to be teasing something big

AC/DC on stage

AC/DC appear to be teasing something big, and it's reignited long held rumours that the rock 'n' roll legends are going to announce their first world tour in eight years. On the band's official social media channels, a mysterious teaser trailer has been posted, showing an all-too-familiar lightning bolt flickering into life before the words 'ARE YOU READY' appear on the screen, accompanied by the music of the 1990 AC/DC banger of the same name.

If it is indeed a tour, it will serve as the first time the Aussie titans have hit the road together since 2016. It would also likely mark the official full-time return of frontman Brian Johnson, who was forced to leave AC/DC's last world tour due to reported hearing issues, being replaced by Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose for the remainder of the dates. Johnson made his triumphant live return with AC/DC at the band's first show in seven years in October at the historic Power Trip Festival in California.

See the teaser video for yourself below and stay tuned for news of what it all really means.

Reviewing AC/DC's Power Trip show for Classic Rock , Rich Hobson wrote of the incredible comeback gig: "Whether Power Trip remains a one-off, or the staging ground for another massive global tour remains to be seen. But even if this  is  the band's last hurrah, there's no better way to go out than with a final almighty showing of raucous, roguish rock'n'roll that is celebrated the world over. Oft-copied, never surpassed."

AC/DC's seventeenth and most recent studio album, Power Up , was released in 2020 to rave reviews. It is unknown at present whether the band ever plan to record together again, regardless of potential touring plans.

Yesterday (February 12), the legendary Australian band revealed the dates for their 2024 ‘Power Trip’ tour , which will take them throughout the UK and Europe across the summer.

The tour – the band’s first since 2016 – will mark the official return of Brian Johnson on vocals, after hearing issues forced him to leave the band’s 2016 dates and be replaced by Axl Rose.

Drummer Matt Laug, who debuted with the band at their live return for the Power Trip festival in California last year, will continue to sit in for Phil Rudd.

AC/DC Europe Tour 2024: How To Get Last-Minute Tickets

W hen the upcoming AC/DC European Tour was announced just a few days ago, ticket sales virtually exploded overnight. The international tour, which will also feature rock band The Pretty Reckless, sold over 1.5 million tickets and sold out most of the tour dates. However, not all hope is lost for those who missed out. We’ll break down how to get last-minute AC/DC tickets before they’re completely gone!

The first stop on the AC/DC 2024 Europe Tour will be on May 17 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany at Veltins Arena. The tour will end on August 17 in Dublin, Ireland at Croke Park.

Tickets have sold out on all major ticketing platforms for this tour, so there aren’t many options left for European AC/DC fans. But, not all hope is lost!

We recommend using Viagogo and Stubhub to find your tickets. Viagogo is a must-try for non-US concerts, especially for very high-profile tours like this one. All purchases on Viagogo are protected from scams and fake tickets as well. If you don’t have much luck on Viagogo, you can also try Stubhub.

Even Vivagogo and Stubhub won’t have tickets to this highly-anticipated tour forever. Get your tickets to see AC/DC in Europe quickly before it’s too late.

AC/DC Europe Tour 2024: How To Get Last-Minute Tickets

AC/DC Is Expected To Make Tour Announcement On Monday

AC/DC 's official web site has launched a countdown clock that is scheduled to hit zero on Monday, February 12 at 3:00 a.m. EST / 12:00 a.m. PST. While there are no hints whatsoever on what fans can expect when the countdown ends, it is widely believed that it will coincide with an announcement of the initial details of the group's first tour dates in eight years. Alongside the countdown timer, there's a form where fans can sign up to AC/DC 's mailing list for more information.

This past Monday, AC/DC 's official social media channels were updated with a mysterious trailer showing the lightning bolt from the band's iconic logo flickering before the words "ARE YOU READY" appear on the screen, soundtracked the music of the 1990 AC/DC song of the same name which appeared on the legendary rockers' 1990 album "The Razors Edge" .

AC/DC 's first show in seven years took place on October 7, 2023 at the Power Trip festival in Indio, California.

The band ran through a 24-song set to close out day two of the three-day event at Empire Polo Club.

AC/DC 's performance marked the first time the band opened its set with "If You Want Blood (You've Got It)" . The concert also included live debuts for two tracks from 2020's "Power Up" album, "Demon Fire" and "Shot In The Dark" .

AC/DC recruited drummer Matt Laug to perform with the band at Power Trip .

The 55-year-old Laug is an American drummer who has played with many bands/artists such as Alanis Morissette , Alice Cooper , SLASH'S SNAKEPIT and Vasco Rossi . Matt moved to Los Angeles after graduating from South Florence High School in 1986 and after attending college in L.A., Matt became a sought-after studio drummer.

In 2001, Laug supported AC/DC as part of SLASH'S SNAKEPIT on the North American and European legs of the "Stiff Upper Lip" tour.

In its announcement about Laug 's addition to the band's Power Trip lineup, AC/DC offered no explanation for the absence of the band's longtime drummer Phil Rudd , who rejoined AC/DC for the recording of the group's comeback album, "Power Up" , which came out in November 2020.

Rudd was ousted from AC/DC when he was sentenced to eight months of home detention by a New Zealand court in 2015 after pleading guilty to charges of threatening to kill and drug possession. He was replaced on the band's "Rock Or Bust" tour by Chris Slade , who had previously served as AC/DC 's drummer between 1989 and 1994, playing on the album "The Razor's Edge" .

Rudd , who appeared on all but three of AC/DC 's 18 previous studio albums, toured in support of his 2014 solo debut, "Head Job" . It was the release of that album that led indirectly to Rudd 's arrest, with the drummer allegedly so angry at a personal assistant over the way the record was promoted that he threatened to have the man and his daughter killed.

AC/DC postponed the last 10 dates of its spring 2016 North American trek after singer Brian Johnson was advised to stop playing live or "risk total hearing loss." The band went on to complete the European and North American legs of its "Rock Or Bust" tour with GUNS N' ROSES frontman Axl Rose as a "guest vocalist." At the time, Johnson had been AC/DC 's singer for 36 years, ever since replacing the late Bon Scott in 1980 and making his debut on the classic "Back In Black" album.

To enable him to perform live with AC/DC again, the now-76-year-old Johnson worked with audio expert Stephen Ambrose , who said he could help resolve the singer's hearing problems.

Ambrose , who invented the wireless in-ear monitors that are widely used by touring artists today, claimed to have invented a new type of ear-bud that would allow Johnson to perform without causing further damage to his eardrums. After three years of experimenting and "miniaturizing" the equipment, Johnson previously said the technology could allow him to tour again.

According to rock and roll comedian Dean Delray , a huge AC/DC fan who has covered the legendary rock act's songs with a tribute band and who has interviewed members of AC/DC in the past, bassist Cliff Williams will not tour with AC/DC this year.

Cliff announced his retirement at the end of AC/DC 's 2015-2016 "Rock Or Bust" tour, which also saw Johnson leaving because of hearing problems. However, Williams — and Johnson — took part in the recording sessions that resulted in "Power Up" . Both of them were also part of the AC/DC lineup that performed at Power Trip .
