15 Things You Need to Know Before Cruising to Mystery Island, Vanuatu

Beautiful Mystery Island is a popular port of call on many South Pacific cruises. Here’s what you need to know before your visit.

Do you have a port stop at Mystery Island in Vanuatu on your upcoming South Pacific cruise? I spent a day exploring this gorgeous tiny island on a cruise from Sydney, Australia .

Mystery Island, officially called Inyeug , is a little slice of paradise covered with greenery and surrounded by a healthy coral reef.

Tip: To keep Mystery Island’s coral reefs healthy for the next generation, please use only reef-safe sunscreen when you visit. If you’re not sure what to look for, here’s an honest review of one of my favorite brands.

This tiny dot on the map is an unspoiled idyll, and you can see it for yourself on a cruise!

I’ll share 15 important things I learned about visiting Mystery Island—from a bit of the area’s culture , what you can expect to see and do , and which essentials you’ll need to pack in your beach bag to make the most of your day.

1. Most people visit Mystery Island by cruise ship

Although Mystery Island has a small grass airstrip left over from WWII used mainly to receive supplies for nearby islands, the vast majority of visitors arrive by cruise ship.

Currently, Carnival, Princess, Norwegian, P&O, Celebrity, Regent Seven Seas, Royal Caribbean, AIDA, and Hapag-Lloyd all offer cruises to Mystery Island.

Usually only one ship visits the small island at a time, and not every day—although on rare occasions Mystery Island will host two ships for the day.

Mystery Island offers a real “private island” experience without all the extras that you might find at private destinations owned by cruise lines.

There aren’t waterslides, fancy beach cabanas, swim-up bars, or huge crowds. Instead, you’ll find pristine natural beaches and basic amenities, with enough space for everyone to enjoy the island.

2. No one lives on Mystery Island

Visitors to idyllic Mystery Island often wonder why no one lives on this pearl of the Pacific! One reason is that local legend tells that the island is haunted by sea gods, so it’s considered taboo to live there.

cruise around vanuatu islands

But a more practical reason for Mystery Island being uninhabited is that it doesn’t have the infrastructure needed for modern-day habitation. There isn’t electricity or roads like you’ll find on the nearby island of Aneityum.

For anyone nervous about a lack of toilet facilities, you’ll be happy to hear there’s a newer toilet block not far from where you’ll land on the island. There are also rustic, wooden-seat outhouses scattered around, but they’re well-ventilated, comfortable, and clean.

3. Mystery Island is a tender port

There isn’t a dock on Mystery Island for cruise ships, so your ship will drop anchor offshore and ferry passengers over on tender boats (which at this tiny port will be the ship’s lifeboats).

cruise around vanuatu islands

Tendering operations can take time, especially if you’re visiting on a larger cruise ship, so take this into consideration when planning your day. Some cruise lines require guests to pick up tender tickets—check your daily planner or the cruise line app for details.

Related: Everything You Need to Know About Tender Ports and Tender Boats on a Cruise

Since it’s not as easy to return to the ship for lunch as it is at docked ports, you might want to prepare to purchase lunch on the island if you’re going to stay for the full day.

4. You can walk the perimeter of Mystery Island in under 30 minutes!

If you’re feeling adventurous, consider walking the perimeter of the island and discovering all of its beautiful beaches. Mystery Island is really small, at just 61 square miles (159 square kilometers) .

It’s completely encircled by sandy beaches, so many people can walk completely around the island in under a half hour. It took me a little longer because I kept stopping to take pictures!

cruise around vanuatu islands

Just like at other cruise ports, many cruisers scope out the closest beach and plop down a towel. You’ll notice that the sands nearest the tender dock will be busy all day.

But if you walk around the island, you’ll be sure to find a sandy spot that’s a lot less crowded. I found an area on the other side of the island under a big shady tree to relax, then joined in with a group of snorkelers to spot schools of colorful fish. I even had the chance to swim for a bit with a sea turtle not too far from the shore!

Tip: Mystery Island doesn’t have any lifeguards, so avoid swimming or snorkeling too far offshore or in the most secluded areas.

5. What you can see and do on Mystery Island

If you’re visiting Mystery Island just to relax and soak up the sun on gorgeous sandy beaches, you can absolutely do that!

But it’s not just a Gilligan’s Island -style spot that’s completely deserted.

Residents of nearby islands boat over each day when a cruise ship is in port—often with the whole family—to offer a variety of services, amenities, and entertainment. Enjoy what they have to offer, or you can just discover the little island’s rustic charm by exploring its shady footpaths through the mangroves.

Here are some of my favorite things to do on Mystery Island:

  • Buy souvenirs at the straw market
  • Have your hair braided
  • Enjoy a massage
  • Snorkel with turtles or explore a shipwreck
  • Visit the tiny WWII-era airstrip
  • Have your picture taken in the famous “Cannibal Soup” pot
  • Enjoy music and dance performances by locals
  • Take a long beach stroll around the island

6. You’ll have several options for lunch and snacks on Mystery Island

If you’re planning to spend most of the day on Mystery Island, you’ll be happy to know that several lunch options are available, though they tend to focus on local seafood. You might also find grilled chicken or sausage, along with fried plantains, rice, fruit, and veggies.

I enjoyed a delicious lunch of yellowfin tuna, prepared on a wood-fired grill, at the open-air Mystery Grill & BBQ .

cruise around vanuatu islands

Boiled spiny lobster was also a popular lunch option, although this New England girl was shocked by the high prices!

cruise around vanuatu islands

You can also purchase packaged snacks and bottled soft drinks from a few vendors to enjoy on the beach. Vanuatu’s local beer, Tusker, is also available on the island.

7. Massages and hair braiding are very cheap on Mystery Island

If the spa prices on your cruise ship are too much for your budget, consider trying a relaxing massage during your beach day on Mystery Island!

I found several massage huts that charged $15 for a 20-minute massage, $20 for 30 minutes, and $40 for an hour. Prices varied a little, so walk around to find the best deal.

cruise around vanuatu islands

During the massage, you’ll wear a swimsuit and be in a small, mixed-gender hut for the service, but it’s very relaxing and an amazing value.

If you’re wearing a two-piece, your practitioner will undo the clasp of your top at some point and gently guide your arms through the straps to access your back. I found that they were very aware that I was in mixed company, and I never felt exposed. If this would make you feel uncomfortable, let the practitioner know at the start of your service.

Hair braiding is also very cheap on Mystery Island. My hair is a few inches past my shoulders and I’m always quoted well over $100 for hair braiding in port on Caribbean cruises. On Mystery Island it was just $12 for long hair!

Tip: If you find a massage or hair braiding venue you’d like to use but the wait is too long, ask if you can make an appointment! Instead of wasting an hour waiting in the sun, I was able to take a refreshing swim and then turned up a few minutes before my scheduled time.

8. Vendors on Mystery Island accept AUD

The local currency on Mystery Island is Vanuatu’s vatu, but I didn’t encounter a single vendor that didn’t accept Australian dollars. I also always received change in AUD, but I can’t promise that’ll be the case for every cruise.

Several vendors also listed prices in US dollars on their signs.

cruise around vanuatu islands

I didn’t see any vendors that accepted credit cards, so be sure to carry some cash with you for snacks, souvenirs, and excursions.

Tip: Although haggling over prices is common—and even expected—at markets in some parts of the world, it’s really not part of the culture in Vanuatu.

9. Most vendors on Mystery Island speak at least some English

The nation of Vanuatu has three official languages: Bislama, English, and French—and the popularity of the three languages is in that order. But since most visitors to Mystery Island are English-speaking, you probably won’t have much of an issue communicating with most of the vendors in English.

My American accent did pose a problem a few times, so I just slowed my speech down or tried French whenever I noticed that someone didn’t seem to understand me.

If you’d like to practice a few Bislama phrases before your visit, here are some of the most helpful basics:

10. You can skip the pricey ship excursions and book on the island

Some cruisers swear by booking shore excursions through the cruise line. Although it’s usually a more expensive option, the cruise line usually promises that you’ll make it back before all-aboard (and the ship will wait if the excursion is late).

This might make sense in many ports of call, but all of the shore excursions on Mystery Island are run by just a few local companies. You’ll be able to book most basic excursions right when you arrive on the island, often at a significant discount.

cruise around vanuatu islands

Excursions offered include snorkeling, paddleboarding, and clear kayak tours, along with boat tours to a turtle lagoon or shark cave.

But if you have your heart set on a specific excursion, like those that travel to the neighboring island of Aneityum, you might want to book through the cruise line to guarantee your spot.

11. You can’t stay on Mystery Island overnight on a cruise

Most South Pacific cruise itineraries that visit Mystery Island only stop for the day. However, you’ll occasionally find an overnight itinerary.

For example, on my recent cruise to Vanuatu and New Caledonia , our itinerary changed several times. When Isle of Pines announced they wouldn’t be accepting cruise ships for the foreseeable future, I was so excited to see that we’d have an overnight at Mystery Island instead!

When you have an overnight at most cruise ports, you don’t need to return to the ship and can book a hotel or stay with friends if you’d like to travel away from the port.

However, on a Mystery Island overnight, guests need to return to the ship in the evening and can tender back to the island in the morning.

12. Aneityum is just a short boat ride away

After spending a lazy beach day on Mystery Island, my plan was to take a shore excursion to Aneityum, the big island that you can see from your ship. It’s only a ten-minute boat ride from Inyeug, and most excursions include a village walking tour to see traditional homes, local schools, the medical dispensary, and the police station.

Other excursions might include a traditional kava ceremony and firewalking performance.

cruise around vanuatu islands

Sadly (due to a maintenance issue on the ship) our overnight at Mystery Island was canceled and so was my day on Aneityum.

However, I did chat with quite a few of my new cruise friends onboard who had done an Aneityum shore excursion (some chose this because they had already visited Mystery Island, and others just weren’t big beach fans), and everyone enjoyed their day learning how the locals live on the larger island.

13. Cruisers are encouraged to bring school supplies for area children

For the past several years, cruisers have been bringing school supplies for the children of Aneityum when they visit Mystery Island.

cruise around vanuatu islands

If you’re considering packing some school supplies for the local kids, here’s a quick list of what they’re looking for, according to an article in the Vanuatu Daily Post .

  • Exercise books
  • Colored pencils
  • Glue sticks
  • Pencil cases

14. The mystery of Mystery Island is a mystery!

There are several theories about why the tiny island of Inyeug is known as Mystery Island. The most popular is that cruise lines coined the name to make the island sound more appealing to potential guests.

Another theory is that during World War II when US troops created the airstrip on Inyeug, the runway was impossible to see from the water. The “mystery” came from the fact that it took a while before Japanese forces figured out where the planes were coming from.

But if you ask most locals, they’ll tell you that during Queen Elizabeth’s 1974 visit to several of Vanuatu’s islands, a reporter covering the tour asked the name of the island. When told that Inyeug means “small,” he decided that a headline of “Her Majesty Visits Mystery Island” would sell more papers than “Her Majesty Visits Small Island.”

15. What to pack in your day bag for Mystery Island

You won’t need to pack much in your day bag to enjoy your day on Mystery Island! Here are my essentials that you won’t want to forget when packing your Mystery Island beach bag:

  • Waterproof sunscreen
  • A swimsuit coverup
  • A beach towel from the ship
  • Snorkel gear
  • Water shoes
  • Cash (AUD, USD, or vatu)
  • A waterproof phone case that fits your phone, cash, and cruise card

If you’re very fair-skinned or not used to the South Pacific sun, you might also want to include a lightweight top and bottom layer to completely cover your skin in case you feel yourself burning.

I slathered on the waterproof sunscreen before I snorkeled, but still managed to burn my backside an alarming shade of red! Having a lightweight and comfortable pair of beach trousers in my bag saved me from doing more damage after I left the water.

If your cruise embarks from a port close to home and you can carry on a small portable beach umbrella or pop-up shelter, I’d consider doing so. During my visit, there weren’t any umbrella rentals available on the island.

My family have booked a cruise next summer visiting Mystery Island. We are very cautious about sun exposure and your article has me worried. Is there a way to guarantee a shaded beach spot on the island before our cruise?

Thursday 13th of July 2023

Hi Jacinta, when you visit Mystery Island all the spots on the beaches are first-come, first-served. I walked all over the island during my visit, and there aren't any shady areas on the beaches unless you're at the back edge of the sand near the island's central area. I'm also very cautious about sun exposure (I have very fair skin and I lost my dad when he was quite young to melanoma) so I understand your concern!

Here are my tips and ideas: (1) Lots of people carried pop-up beach shelters over, which you could do if you're driving to the port or can find a smaller one you can pack in your airline luggage (2) Get an early tender and head to the opposite side of the island. I found a low-hanging shady tree and set up camp underneath it so I could return whenever I needed a break from the sun. (3) Wear lightweight UV-resistant clothing like rash guards, and pack airy t-shirts and slouchy cotton pull-on trousers. (4) Pack lots of waterproof sun cream and reapply more often than you would at home.

Hope this helps, and happy cruising!

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Mystery Island Cruise Port

The food and drink available on Mystery Island depends on what the Vanuatu locals bring to sell that day. When a cruise ship is in port, the people who live on nearby Aneityum bring fresh catches from the nearby sea and other local delicacies for passengers to try during their cruise to Mystery Island.

Some local specialties you might see for sale include cooked spiny nosed lobsters and flat-nosed lobsters, homemade coconut oil, kava, and local coffee. Soft drinks and other food items are also sold.

Culture & History of the Mystery Island Cruise Port

Located in the Vanuatu archipelago within the rich blue of the South Pacific, Mystery Island offers relaxation and cultural activities to its travelers with a bit of mystique thrown in. One mystery is how the island got its name. According to locals, the island used to be referred to as Inyeug, which means small island. When Queen Elizabeth II visited in 1974, a reporter trying to find out which small island she was visiting got confused. In news headlines, he referred to the island as Mystery Island, and the name stuck.

Another mystery is centered around the local folklore regarding the island. Since residents who live on Aneityum island often visit Mystery Island, you may wonder why none of them live on the island. The island is actually steeped in superstition and locals believe it’s haunted by spirits.

Since seafood is such a big part of life in Vanuatu, life would also be more difficult living on Mystery Island since no fishing is allowed off its coast. Tourism is important to the area and this rule keeps the island pristine for visitors.

You’ll get a taste of the local culture when the people from Aneityum come to the island since, in addition to selling things at the market, they often put on performances for donations. Both children and adults often come to perform traditional dance and song on Mystery Island, and local bands set up on the beach to serenade visitors with music while they lounge on the sand. Dancers from Futuna Island also come to Mystery Island sometimes to perform for donations.

Mystery Island Port Facilities & Location

Transportation in Mystery Island

The local transportation on Mystery Island is local to you…your own feet! Since the island is so small, it is easy to walk around the entire thing in about forty minutes. There are no taxis or buses. However, you will find transportation offered for excursions to Aneityum, when a boat will pick you up near the tender jetty and take you on the short jaunt across the bay to see how locals live.

Shopping Near the Mystery Island Cruise Port

There is no town center in Mystery Island that you can stroll down to do some shopping, but that doesn’t mean you’ll have to go home without a souvenir from your time on the island. Instead of ducking into shops or visiting markets like you might be used to when traveling, you’ll find that the souvenirs are brought to you. When a cruise ship is in port, the locals from Aneityum set up small display stalls along the beach. Many of the items you’ll discover in this makeshift market are made by hand right in Vanuatu and reflect traditional culture. You can also usually find postcards, t-shirts, and other typical souvenirs.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency of Mystery Island is the Ni-Vanuatu Vatu. The Australian dollar is often accepted throughout Vanuatu, including on Mystery Island, but even if it’s accepted the change is not always available in Australian dollars. If you’re sailing to Mystery Island and want to ensure you can purchase whatever you’d like, exchange some money for the Vatu before leaving for your trip. You won’t find an ATM or a bank to do so on Mystery Island, and credit cards aren’t accepted at the market stands.

Tipping is not expected or desired in Vanuatu since the recipient will feel like they need to return the tip in some way due to local kastom traditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do rocket guides work on an ipad or android tablet.

The Rocket Guides work on Windows tablets but to use them on an Ipad or Android tablet you will need to connect the tablet to your notebook by WiFi using a special app. As long as your notebook is operating nearby, you can see and use the guide on the tablet.

What's the best way to use the Rocket Guide to make a cruising plan for Vanuatu?

You'll get the best use of the Rocket Guide - and have the best time cruising in Vanuatu - if you spend some time exploring on the guide and discovering how it works before you set sail for Vanuatu. Here's a brief example of how to develop a cruise plan on the Rocket Guide:

I have Navionics, my plotter with the latest charts, and Google Earth - so why do I need your guide?

Electronic charts are digitized versions of existing nautical charts with much of the depth data dating back many years. They are normally good wherever ships go but not so good in small bays where yachts want to anchor - and very poor in remote areas of Vanuatu.

Neither the charts or Google Earth will tell you if your anchor is going to dig in properly or precisely where to anchor without damaging the coral. Google Earth is great except where sun reflection or clouds or cloudy water prevents you from approximating the depths (assuming you are a trained expert at aerial photo interpretation). Even in well charted areas with good imaging you won't discover the best dive spots, villages to experience, trails to walk, or where to get supplies, how to trade, where to get your gas bottle filled, or how to connect to the local internet.

None of the resources you mentioned will tell you how to avoid potentially toxic foods or polluted water or how not to be harmed by dangerous marine animals.

The Rocket Guides help when you really need the information to avoid or solve a serious problem.

How do I know the GPS routes you give are accurate and safe and how would I use them?

The GPS Route numbers are shown on the photocharts - from the South Pacific to an individual ancorage when you click on the anchor button (sailing directions) and listed with details when you point to the little sailboat button (navigation directions).   The routes are saved as gpx files in the program's folder.

All you need to do to find out how to use the the gpx routes is google "how do I import gpx route files into a (Your GPS or Plotter Make and Model)."

You will also find detailed instructions for using the routes on the Rocket Guide. Open the guide and from the all Vanuatu view, click on the anchor button (sailing directions) and then click on "using routes".

I like to explore on my own so why should I buy your guide?

Our guides don't make choices for you or tell you where to go, they enable you to make your own cruise plan and decisions based on accurate, up to date data and images of the highest quality.

Without the Rocket Guide you could easily miss some of the most amazing villages, dive spots, waterfalls, and treks. Or you might have to spend a lot of time to discover the best places to shop, rent a car, or cultural tours to experience.

Why are they called Rocket Guides?

The first Vanuatu Rocket Cruisng Guide was published in 2000 and, at the request of the Vanuatu Tourism Department we created the Rocket Travel Guide to Vanuatu. In 2005, using the same concept, we developed the Rocket Cruising and Travel Guides to New Caledonia. Every year since the first publication we improved and perfected the guides and added new information and images to them, often publishing updated versions four or more times a year, to assure the information is up to date and to maximize the utility of the guides for sailors like yourself. This was a huge advantage over paper books that require reprinting and shipping at great cost. Click here for more about creating the Rocket Giuide

Reliable, expert local knowledge

Frederique and I have been cruising the South Pacific for over 40 years aboard our 14.5m cutter Moira. I am a Ph.D. marine scientist and have been living aboard my own boats since 1958. Freddy's ancestors were sea people. We first came to Vanuatu in 1984 and have, over the years, pretty much cruised everywhere. We began making the Cruising Guide to Vanuatu in 1999(nine years before Google Earth existed) and have constantly updated it with new information and photographs ever since. We personally did detailed hydrographic surveys of anchorages and challenging reef passes where there are no reliable nautical charts.

The message here is that the information on our guide is current, reliable, practical, and easy to find. Whatever you need to know about cruising in Vanuatu is on the guide. You don't have to go online for any of it. There is so much information on the guide you'll probably never see it all - but when you need a suggestion, an idea, or a really clear idea of what you'll find if you go to a likely looking anchorage - you get it right away.

Top Tips For Cruisers In Port Vila

Now if you are a first-time visitor to the Vila Vanuatu Cruise Port here are some helpful tips so you can make the most out of your visit:

  • While major credit cards are accepted in many places, it’s advisable to have some local currency on hand. You can exchange money at banks, ATMs, or exchange bureaus. Having small bills is helpful for making purchases at local markets.
  • Vanuatu enjoys a tropical climate, so pack sunscreen with a high SPF, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat to shield yourself from the sun’s rays. Lightweight, breathable clothing is a must, and consider bringing a light rain jacket in case of unexpected showers.
  • The warm, tropical climate can lead to dehydration. Carry a reusable water bottle and fill it up regularly to stay hydrated, especially if you’re active and exploring the island.
  • While you can explore Port Vila independently, booking shore excursions through your cruise line or reputable local operators can simplify the process and provide valuable insights from knowledgeable guides. Popular excursions include waterfall hikes, snorkeling tours, and cultural experiences.
  • Bargaining is not as common in Vanuatu as in some other destinations, but it’s acceptable in local markets. When haggling, be polite and respectful, and remember that the prices are often already reasonable.
  • English and Bislama are the primary languages spoken in Vanuatu, but locals appreciate it when visitors make an effort to learn a few basic phrases in Bislama. Simple greetings and expressions can go a long way in enhancing your interactions with locals.
  • Practice responsible tourism by respecting the marine environment. Don’t touch or disturb coral reefs, avoid littering, and steer clear of products made from endangered species.
  • Consider taking tours offered by local operators. These tours often provide a more authentic and intimate experience, allowing you to explore hidden gems and support the local economy.
  • Pay attention to the scheduled arrival and departure times of your cruise ship. Arrive back at the port well before the ship’s departure time to avoid being left behind.
  • Look for duty-free shopping opportunities at the port for items like alcohol, perfume, and luxury goods. These can be more affordable than onboard purchases.

Review for a South Pacific Cruise on Brilliance of the Seas

My husband and I sailed on what we call "the cruise to nowhere", being the 19 March 2024 Brilliance of the Seas "11 day "cruise to the South Pacific from Sydney, Australia The cruise was meant to head to Lifou, Noumea, Mystery Island, Port Vila and Luganville for 11 days. In the end we only (just) got to Lifou - the other ports were cancelled and the cruise was cut short from 11 days to 8 days ... Read More

Review for a South Pacific Cruise on Carnival Luminosa

This Australian vacation was planned as a break from the gloomy winter in Olympia WA in the USA. We began our cruise in Brisbane Australia headed for a couple small islands in the South Pacific. First two days at sea; This ship is showing its age. It feels very closed in compared with newer ships. The food selection and quality is below par. The servers are friendly and welcoming. I have ... The good: We lucked out with the calmest seas in Feb cyclone season. RC shore visits in Noumea, Mystery and Port Vila. Expensive but well run. The insanely blue water of Mystery island. I had a great time on this cruise, I was a solo traveller and everyone was really nice and friendly. I'd recommend the solo traveller meet up held on the first few nights. A few things I noticed tho. The Evian water package that cost me AUD$40 (pre cruise discount) turned out to be cheap supermarket water that would cost AUD$10, see pic. There weren't water fountains to fill up water ... Review for a Australia & New Zealand Cruise on Carnival Luminosa

We have cruised other Carnival ships, but nothing as bad as this. Toilet stopped working for several days. Public areas smelled of sewerage. My GoPro was stolen, and when I reported it security stripped our room (mind you this was around midnight as well). My wife broke her finger on a shore excursion, and we caught both COVID and Influenza A. Our last meal in cabin isolation was a single piece ... Read More

Chose this cruise to enjoy with first time cruising friends. Balcony room (4D) cabin port side aft. Extras Paid for 1, Wifi package 7 days. Was good enough and dropped out now and then. Cruise was on 11/2 out to South Pacific the morning of the cruise, the itinerary changed due to the low. So from 3 ports we went to 2 ports which was Santo and Port Vila (no tenders required) I was very happy with the change as i had not been to those ports since 5 years ago. What our travellers are saying:

What a fantastic trip! Not only did we get to five islands way off the beaten track, never before visited by a commercial expedition boat, but the friendliness and welcome, culture, activities, birds and freedom to roam made every stop unforgettable. And the hospitality on board was superb, meeting new friends - even getting to suggest special dishes. Looking forward to travelling with you again.

What an amazing trip! We visited remote communities that had rarely and in some cases never had visitors before. The welcomes were amazing and it was a real privilege being able to be part of such an experience. This was our 2nd trip with Heritage and it exceeded expectations. They are a true expedition company with great leaders and guides - we have no hesitation in recommending them.

Thanks for a truly wonderful trip. A great insight into the lives of the people of PNG, the Solomon islands and of Vanuatu. Wonderful snorkelling opportunities. A great crew! Thank you Aaron for your very capable and calm leadership. Thanks to Suzanne for your knowledge of local customs and the informative notices pinned up daily. Katrin for looking after our hospitality needs so well and the chefs for great food! Also a great bunch of fellow travellers!!

Visiting Ports

Champagne bay.

This is beach lifestyle at its very best. Just choose a spot on the sand, set up your towel and drink in the serenity. When it comes time for lunch, locals specialise in poulet fish and laplap (ground taro with fish marinated in coconut milk, wrapped in banana leaves and cooked over hot stones). Widely regarded as the Pacific’s most beautiful beach, it’s no wonder our passengers continually vote Champagne Bay as their favourite destination.

Untouched, uninhabited, uninterrupted... you must be on Mystery Island. This tiny island is merely a speck on the world map but offers tonnes of fun. Locals visit from a nearby island to sell community crafts and souvenirs, coconut themed dishes and drinks. While strolling the sandy pathways to white beaches and crystal clear lagoons, you might come across a landing strip used by the Allies in World War II. Swimming, snorkelling or just relaxing by the water’s edge are all ideal ways to while away the hours.

Santo is renowned for its World War II sites, diving spots, village culture and blue holes perfect for fresh water swimming. Underwater explorers can enjoy the experience of a lifetime with a visit to the wreck of the President Coolidge, one of the world’s most accessible dive sites.

Cruises Make Great Birthday Weekend Getaways

Throw your kid a party they won't forget.

By Heidi Sarna | Published on April 29, 2024

Birthdays are the best time of year to celebrate your loved ones, especially your children. As your child's birthday approaches this year, consider making a bigger splash than a routine visit to your local arcade or trampoline park. Go for the ultimate wow factor and get away with your family for a celebration on a cruise ship — your go-to for the best birthday weekend getaways.

Cruises make the best weekend trips for birthdays because they offer immersive fun for all ages. Trade planning birthday parties for seamless celebrations everyone in your crew can enjoy. And let the ship, which caters to the younger set with nonstop bow-to-stern fun, serve as their playground. I can't think of a more perfect setting for the best birthday trips.

As a mom who has delighted in celebrating my twin sons' birthdays on Royal Caribbean cruise ships, I'm thrilled to offer my top tips for planning the best birthday cruises, ensuring your kid's next birthday is one they'll never forget.

How To Choose The Right Ship And Itinerary

The Mason Jar Family Lunch Father and Son

Every ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet is a potentially great choice for weekend birthday trips. The stage is set the minute you board, with the engaging crew on the gangway — your very own birthday weekend welcome wagon. The buzz is palpable, and a festive vibe permeates the air.

While the ship and its amenities provide the ultimate birthday backdrop, the destinations you visit will also be great opportunities to make memories. Which itineraries promise the best birthday weekend getaways? Well, that's easy, in my opinion. The best birthday cruises are Royal Caribbean's weekend cruises to The Bahamas.

Three-night cruises depart Fridays from three Florida ports — Orlando (Port Canaveral), Ft. Lauderdale and Miami . All of these sailings feature the best way to spend a birthday in paradise: a visit to Perfect Day at CocoCay , Royal Caribbean's private island in The Bahamas.

Beach Cabana Family Playing in the Sand, Perfect Day at Coco Cay

The Party Starts In Your Stateroom

Royal Caribbean offers a variety of birthday trip celebratory gifts that you can pre-order in advance (or once you're onboard — a win for my fellow procrastinators out there). Classic Royal Caribbean packages include a magnetic "Happy Birthday" sign for your door, while your stateroom is adorned with a birthday garland and festive decor.

Tap into your inner creativity and stash a few extra decorations from home in your suitcase (don't forget some magnets if you want to put more birthday decor on the cabin door). I've found that photos or cutouts of my kids' favorite film characters, superheroes or animals work great.

I packed a few rolls of colorful crepe streamers to celebrate my twin sons' eighth birthdays on a birthday weekend getaway, looping nautical-themed blue and white streamers around their cabin bunk beds as they slept so they'd wake up to festive vibes. I also went to the onboard shop and purchased cute inflatable ships to place around the stateroom and captain's hats for our family to wear. Signifying we were on a birthday trip brought many welcome cheers from the ship's excellent crew as well as guests.

No perfect birthday weekend getaway is complete without cake. Royal Caribbean can help by delivering your sweets , too. Choose a vanilla or chocolate birthday cake, a box of mini vanilla or red-velvet cupcakes or request chocolate-chunk brownies, which can arrive at your stateroom to kick off your celebrations. I fondly recall a birthday cruise with Grandpa and Grandma in tow. We started the all-day birthday celebrations for my boys nice and early with ice-cream sundaes at Ben & Jerry's® for breakfast!

The Best Birthday Activities Onboard

If you were celebrating on land, you might rent a party space or take the kids to an amusement park for their birthday. On a Royal Caribbean cruise, the stage is already set with countless included activities for all ages.

A day onboard quickly fills with fun for all ages, from mini golf to rock climbing, zip lines and water slides, not to mention my kids' favorite, the FlowRider® surf simulator. Much of the fun is included in your cruise fare, with a few options offered at an additional charge, like the RipCord® by iFLY® skydiving simulator on Quantum Class ships. It's totally worth it, by the way.

I can't forget to mention the fun for kids joining the Adventure Ocean® Youth Program. A highlight of my sons' weekend birthday cruise was making new friends, dabbling in some arts and crafts and participating in wacky science experiments in their age-appropriate grouping.

You can always put on your thinking cap (or birthday hat) and design a little treasure hunt for your wee ones. I did this once, drawing a simple treasure map for my sons' birthday that led them around the ship to find six special birthday surprises — a slice of pizza, an ice cream cone, the toy section of the gift shop, roller-skating tag with mom, etc. Royal Caribbean ships are ready-made for special event cruises, so make the most of it.

Social 100 Teens Selfie

Perfect Port Days

The best birthday weekend getaways include a stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay. When it's time to take the party from the ship to the shore, Perfect Day at CocoCay is ready for you.

Almost all of Royal Caribbean's weekend cruises out of Florida call on the cruise line's private island. It's an island paradise that truly caters to the whole family, especially kids. Eat as many burgers, hot dogs and fries as you want at the island's five complimentary dining spots when you're not jumping for joy in the giant Oasis Lagoon®, the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean.

Birthday kids can live it up splashing around Captain Jill's Galleon℠, a shipwreck complete with geysers, slides and drench buckets, and the Splashaway Bay℠ water park for the smallest swashbucklers with fountains, pools, mini waterslides and more.

When you need a break from the party pace, unwind on the powdery sands of Chill Island® and South Beach — family-friendly spots with beach chairs and umbrellas lined up and waiting.

And since you've got a birthday to celebrate, why not spring for Thrill Waterpark® ? With a floating trampoline, wave pool and 13 waterslides, it's a great place to let little ones have a blast and earn bragging rights. Did I mention one of the attractions is the tallest waterslide in North America at 135 feet?

Your kid's special day wouldn't be complete without a ride on Up, Up and Away, a helium balloon that takes guests soaring 450 feet up for out-of-this-world views from the highest vantage point in The Bahamas.

Customizing Birthday Cruises: Top Tips

Whenever you're sailing with Royal Caribbean, you'll see many groups celebrating. It's fun to see many families and groups kitted out in matching T-shirts, baseball caps and accessories designed with the birthday kid's name. Consider planning ahead with your own custom-designed clothing to make your weekend party cruise that much more fun.

Of course, in the dining room at any given time, you can hear the sound of "Happy Birthday" being sung by the servers and fellow guests eager to join in the revelry. Make sure you mention to your waiter that there's a birthday kid in your party.

Think outside of the birthday box and see how you can customize your weekend birthday cruise to suit your preferences and requirements. With some planning, sometimes private spaces onboard the ship can be reserved, and special food and music arranged — especially if you're traveling with the extended family or a group of friends. Contact the Royal Gifts department (or Groups Department , if you're traveling with a large group of friends and family) to see what can be put together.

Capturing The Birthday Fun

The ship's professional photographers will be happy to capture precious moments of your sailing, including a weekend birthday cruise bash. Get the family dressed in their finest — or maybe in the matching T-shirts you brought along or the captains' hats you bought in the gift shop — and make some seriously fun memories to cherish forever.

If you have special thoughts about where you want your photos taken, talk to the photography team. They're a friendly crew with lots of ideas. When your photo shoot is over, you can purchase your favorite pictures in digital form or as prints — it's up to you.

The icing on the birthday cake? Royal Caribbean's family- and birthday-friendly weekend cruises often include frequent offers for families like complimentary sailing for kids if they stay in the same stateroom as their parents. Now that's a birthday present for the adults, too!
