Early morning is the best time to start travelling in Islam. Allah’s Messenger ﷺ teaches us several dua for Safar to make our journey safer in-sha-Allah. The main reasons for reciting traveling dua are seeking Allah’s guidance, blessings, and protection before starting the journey. So, every Muslim should say these duas as sunnah practices. Let’s reveal the essential duas for transportation.

There are numerous Safar dua mentioned in Quran and hadith. You will find most of these dua in the Hisnul Muslim app . However, considering the importance of supplications of travelling, we’re publishing these duas in one article.

Praying Two Raka’h Before Leaving Home

Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said to pray two raka’h Sunnah prayers before you start the journey. The following hadith supports it.

You can perform this Salah by adding any sura with sura Fatihah. But, in the book of Al-Majmu’ Imam Nawawi mentioned reciting sura Al-Kafirun and sura Al-Ikhlas with sura Fatihah in the first and second raka’h respectively.

Abdullah bin Abbas (RA) reported that Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever increases his prayers for forgiveness (i.e. Astaghfirullah), Allah will grant him relief from every worry, a way out from every hardship, and provide for him in ways he does not expect.” [Musnad Ahmad]

Allah’s Messenger ﷺ mentions the significance of making dua during travelling in the following hadith,

“Three supplications are answered without a doubt: The supplication of the oppressed, the supplication of the traveler, and the supplication of the parent for his child.” [Jami At-Tirmidhi]

Prayer of the Traveler as Dawn Approaches

Transliteration: Sami’a saami’un bihamdillaahi wa husni balaa’ihi ‘alaynaa. Rabbanaa saahibnaa, wa ‘afdhil ‘alaynaa ‘aa’ithan billaahi minan-naar.

Meaning: He Who listens has heard that we praise Allah for the good things He gives us. Our Lord, be with us and bestow Your favor upon us. I seek the protection of Allah from the Fire.

Dua Upon Reaching Destination

Dua when approaching a town or village.

Suhayb (RA) that the Prophet ﷺ did not enter or see any village without saying the following dua

رَّبِّ أَنزِلْنِى مُنزَلًا مُّبَارَكًا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلْمُنزِلِينَ

Transliteration: Rabbi anzilnī munzalān mubārakān wa anta khayru-l-munzilīn.

Meaning: O Allah, let me disembark with a blessed disembarking, and You are the best of those who cause to disembark.

[Al-Quran, Sura Al-Mu’minun, 23: 29]

Supplication Before Entering Your Place

Suhaib (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ would say upon looking at the place (town/village) he wishes to enter:

Transliteration: Allahumma rabbas samawatis sab’i wa ma azlalna, wa rabbal ardinas sab’i wa ma aqlalna, wa rabbash-shayatini wa ma adlalna, wa rabbar riyahi wa ma zaraina, as’aluka khaira hadzihil qaryah wa khaira ahliha, wa khaira ma fiha, wa a’udzubika min sharriha wa sharri ahliha, wa sharri ma fiha.

Meaning: O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all that they envelope, Lord of the seven earths and all that they carry, Lord of the devils and all whom they misguide, Lord of the winds and all whom they whisk away. I ask You for the goodness of this village, the goodness of its inhabitants, and for all the goodness found within it, and I take refuge with You from the evil of this village, the evil of its inhabitants, and from all the evil found within it.

[Mustadrak Al-Hakim]

Supplication Upon Returning Home

آيبونَ تائبونَ عابدونَ لربِّنا حامِدون

Transliteration: Ayibun, ta’ibun, ‘abidun, liRabbina hamidun

Meaning: We return, in repentant, worshipping, and praising our Lord

Dhikr of Return from Travel

When the Prophet ﷺ returned from a battle or Hajj, he used to say three times:

Then he ﷺ said,

Transliteration: La ila-ha illallah-hu wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu, wahua ‘ala kulli shai’in qadir, a-ibuna, ta-ibuna, ‘a-biduna, li rabbina ha-midoon. Sadaqballa-hu wa’dahu, wa nasara ‘abdahu wa hazamal ahzaba wahdahu

Meaning: There is no God except Allah alone, He has no partner; His is the kingdom, all the praise; And He has power over all things. We are returners, penitents, worshipers and praisers of our Lord. Allah has fulfilled His promise, He has helped His servants, and He alone has defeated all the opposing factions.

[Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim]

Prayer Upon Returning Home

After returning home, it’s Sunnah to pray two raka’h Salah.

“When you leave your house, perform two raka’h and this will safeguard you against evil. When you enter your home, perform another two raka’h and this will safeguard you against evil.” [Musnad Al-Bazzar]

Travelling is a necessary part of life. As Muslims, we should follow the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ during Safar. You may be confused to see lots of dua in the list. Actually, Allah’s Messenger ﷺ used to say different dua during travelling. But you can start with some basic ones. And try to memorize and practice more duas as much as you can. May Allah makes our journeys safer, Ameen.

Dua for traveling

A Dua for Safe Travels

Dua, or supplication, is an integral aspect of the Islamic faith. It is a means of communicating with Allah, seeking His guidance, and asking for His blessings. When it comes to traveling, making dua is highly recommended as it is a way to seek Allah’s protection and guidance during the journey. In this article, we will explore the importance of dua for travel from a Sunnah perspective, and provide a dua for travel along with its Arabic text, transliteration, and translation.

In Islam, dua is considered to be the essence of worship. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the significance of making dua in various aspects of life, including travel. He is reported to have said, “There are three whose supplication is not rejected: the fasting person when he breaks his fast, the just ruler, and the one who is oppressed” (Tirmidhi). This indicates the special status of dua, and its potency in seeking Allah’s favor.

Traveling, whether for leisure or for a specific purpose, can be fraught with uncertainties and challenges. Making dua before embarking on a journey is a way to seek Allah’s protection and guidance, and to ensure a safe and smooth travel experience. It is a way of acknowledging our reliance on Allah and humbly seeking His assistance. Moreover, the act of making dua fosters a sense of mindfulness and connection with Allah, thereby enhancing our spiritual journey.

A dua for travel is as follows:

Arabic: سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ Transliteration: Subhana-alladhi sakh-khara la-na hadha wa ma kunna la-hu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbi-na la munqalibun. Translation: “Glory unto Him Who created this transportation, for us, though we were unable to create it on our own. And unto our Lord we shall return.”

This dua is to be recited during the journey, whether it be by air, land, sea, or any other means of transport. It is a way of acknowledging Allah’s control over the means of transportation and seeking His protection and guidance throughout the travel.

The act of reciting this dua not only serves as a way to seek Allah’s protection and guidance but also as a means of expressing gratitude for the means of travel and acknowledging Allah’s control over all aspects of our lives.

In Islam, charity holds immense significance, and it is regarded as a means of seeking Allah’s favor and blessings. The act of giving charity with sincere intentions can serve as a way to seek Allah’s favors, and it can potentially help in the fulfillment of one’s dua. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity” (Tirmidhi).

By giving in charity with a sincere heart, one not only fulfills their obligation towards those in need but also seeks Allah’s mercy and blessings. This act of kindness and generosity can contribute to the fulfillment of one’s supplications, including those made for safe traveling and a smooth journey.

The dua for travel provided above serves as a means to acknowledge Allah’s control over our journeys and seek His blessings for a safe and smooth travel experience. Additionally, giving in charity with a sincere heart can further aid in the fulfillment of one’s supplications.

As Muslims, it is important to incorporate these practices into our lives and recognize the power of dua and charity in seeking Allah’s favor and blessings. May Allah grant us safe travels and accept our supplications. Ameen.

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah said: “Three supplications are accepted, there is no doubt in them (about them being accepted): The supplication of the oppressed, the supplication of the traveler, and the supplication of his father against his son.”

Dua when Starting a Journey on a Plane, Car, or Any Mode of Transport

Importance of dua for travell.

In the Sunnah, there are several Adhkaar that it is mustahabb for the one who wants to travel to say. It was reported by ‘Abd-Allaah ibn’ Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Apostle of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went up on his camel to go on a journey say takbeer three He then said, “Subhaan allathi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrineen wa inna ila rabbi the munqaliboon. Allaahumma inna nas’aluka fi safarina haadha al-birra wa’l-taqwa wa min al-‘aml ma tarda, Allaahumma hawwin alayna safarana haadha watwi ‘anna bu’dahu. Allaahumma anta al-Saahib fi’l-safar wa’l-Khaleefah fi’l-ahl. Allaahumma inni a’oodhu bika min wa’tha ‘al-safar wa ka’aabat al-manzar wa su’ al-munqalib fi’l-maali wa’l-ahl (Glory to him who placed it (transport) in our service and ourselves would not have been able to do so, and to our Lord is our ultimate destiny O Allah, we ask you for righteousness and piety in our journey, and we ask you for acts that please you. facilitate our journey and let us cover his distance quickly O Allah, you are the companion of the journey and the Successor (the one who keeps them in case of absence) on the family O Allah, I seek refuge from you the difficulties travel, change of heart and bad situation, and I seek a refuge from You for an unfortunate result with regard to wealth and family). “And when he comes back, he would say the same words, with the following addition:” Aayiboona taa’iboona ‘aabidoona li rabbina haamidoon (return, repentance, farewell and praising our Lord). Narrated by Muslim (1342).

Dua For Travelling Salafi

The expression “wa ma kunna lahu muqrineen (and we ourselves would not be able to do so)” means: we would not have been able to control it and use it, if Allah had not put it to our service “Difficulties of travel” means difficulties, “Change of heart” means changes caused by grief and similar events: “unfortunate outcome” means on the return See Sharh al-Nawawi, ala Muslim (9/111) We do not know if there is a specific dua in the Sunnah to protect a traveler until he returns safe and sound to his family, but if the traveler recites the Adhkaar regularly morning and evening and asks to Allah to protect him rings and says the dua ‘to travel which is quoted above, then we hope that Allah will answer his prayer and protect him and bring him back safely to his family, unless Allah wills in his wisdom to test His slave, in which case nothing can deliver the decree of Allah.

Dua For Travelling Abroad

What he should remember when he wants to leave his home – to travel or for other purposes – and that he hopes that Allah will protect him, is the reported story of Anas ibn Maalik (may Allah be pleased with him) from him), according to which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever says – that is to say, when he leaves his house – Bismillaah, tawakkaltu ‘ala Allah, wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata illa Billaah (In the name of Allah, I trust Allah, there is neither power nor strength except with Allah) “, he will be told: you are caught in charge, you are protected and guided, the demons will move away from you him, and a devil says: What can you do with a man who has been guided, cared for and protected? Reported by Abu Dawood (5095) and Al-Tirmidhi (3462); classified as Saheeh by al-Albaani in Sahih Abi Dawood. In Awn al-Ma’bood (13/297), it is written: “So, it is said”, it is an angel who cried to him: O slave of Allah. “You have been guided”, that is, “on the way to the truth”, “you have been cared for” means that your worries are taken care of.

Incorporating Ahadith into the Practice of Dua for Travelling

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of dua in the life of a Muslim, particularly during travel. Several Ahadith highlight how the Prophet would not only recite this dua himself but also encourage his companions to do the same, demonstrating the dua’s significance in seeking divine protection and blessings.

Benefits Highlighted in Ahadith:

  • Spiritual Protection: Travel often exposes one to various risks and uncertainties. The dua acts as a shield, offering spiritual protection by placing the traveler under Allah’s care.
  • Mental Peace: Knowing that one has sought the blessings and protection of Allah brings a sense of peace and calm, essential for any journey.

The Significance of Travel in Islam

Islam places a strong emphasis on the pursuit of knowledge and understanding, both of which are often amplified through the experience of travel. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Seek knowledge even if you have to go as far as China,” highlighting the importance of seeking understanding beyond one’s immediate environment. Travel in Islam serves multiple purposes: it is a means to perform Hajj (the pilgrimage to Mecca), a way to learn about different cultures and societies, and a method to appreciate the diversity of Allah’s creation.

The Benefits of Travel

  • Personal Growth: Travel challenges individuals, pushing them out of their comfort zones and encouraging adaptability and resilience.
  • Cultural Appreciation: It fosters a deep appreciation for diversity, teaching tolerance and understanding through firsthand experiences with different cultures and ways of life.
  • Spiritual Enlightenment: For Muslims, travel can be a spiritual journey, offering opportunities to reflect on one’s faith and the magnificence of Allah’s creation.
  • Gaining Knowledge: It aligns with the Islamic principle of seeking knowledge, understanding different communities, and the natural world.

The Dua for Travelling is more than just words. it is a profound act of faith, embodying the Muslim traveler’s reliance on Allah. It serves as a reminder of the importance of turning to Allah in all our endeavors, seeking His guidance, protection, and blessings. As we embark on our journeys, let this dua be a source of comfort, peace, and protection, enveloping our travels in safety and piety.

11 Duas for Travelling for a Safe Journey (Arabic & English)

Duas for Travelling

Table of Contents

Islam is a comprehensive religion that covers all spheres of life. In addition to the five obligatory prayers, Allah has commanded us to seek His blessings and guidance before undertaking any action. For instance, we must seek Allah’s protection from any harm during travelling by reciting Dua for Travelling .

Whether we travel by car, train, or airplane, we must recite certain Duas before starting our journey . Of course, we plan ahead of time, but no one is certain how our plan progresses or ends. Therefore, Muslims must seek Allah’s direction and assistance to reach their destinations safely and return home to their family. While you do so, opt for Dua Travels to maximize your experience.

Islam allows all Muslims to travel when the intentions are for the right purpose. While reciting  Dua for travelling , Muslims must firmly believe in Allah (SWT) and His blessings. He is the only one who has the power to protect us from unfortunate events like accidents and the harm of travelling. Let us explore some of the most beneficial as we must recite before and during the journey.

What Does the Holy Quran Say about Travelling?

Holy Quran, the sacred scripture, is the book of wisdom that teaches man the purpose of life and guides Muslims on the right way to lead their lives. The Islamic Holy Book covers all aspects of life and directs Muslims to success in this world and hereafter. According to the Quran, this world is temporary, and human beings are in a constant state of Travel. However, Allah (SWT) also mentions physical travelling several times.

In the Quran, ‘sayyir’ refers to the one who travels. The word sayir literally means to move or travel. Allah (SWT) used this word 27 times in the Quran in several expressions, including “Do Travel,” “Do they not Travel,” and “Tell them to Travel.”

Do they then not travel through the Earth, so that their minds gain wisdom and their ears thus learn to hear? 22:46

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) also emphasized travelling. He told the believers that travelling is a great way to expand their horizons and seek knowledge. In one instance, he said

“Keep  to  travelling by night  because the earth is folded (traversed more easily) during the  night .” [Abu Dawud].

Dua Before Travelling

Shariah recommends to off 2 rakaat nawafil before starting travel. It is because the Holy Prophet (PBUH) performed this task before going on any journey. You can get the confirmation of this practice from the following hadith.

Dua Before Travelling

“When you leave your house, perform two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evil. When you enter your home, perform another two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evil.”

(Musnad Al-Bazzar)

Dua for Travel

Once you have left home, you may recite the following Dua for Travel at any point during your journey.

Dua for Travel

O Allah, we ask You in our travel for righteousness, taqwa, and good deeds that You are pleased with. O Allah makes our travel ease and shortens the distance for us. O Allah, You are our Companion in travel and the guardian of our family (in our absence). O Allah I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, a sight of grief, and from an unfortunate occurrence in wealth and family.

Dua for Travelling in Quran

The Quran clearly stated the Dua for safe Travel regardless of the mode of transport. The following Dua for Travelling is recited to seek Allah’s protection and safety throughout the journey.

Dua for Travelling in Quran

While reciting this Dua, Muslims ask Allah for His blessings and wisdom through the journey. They also thank Allah for the permission to ride the vehicle. Also, this is a means to ask for Allah’s  (SWT) forgiveness before setting off, so our sins are forgiven by the Almighty if we encounter any unfortunate events.

Dua For Safar (Supplication For The Travelling)

Posted by Ahmed Abdulla | Duas

Dua For Safar (Supplication For The Travelling)

What does Safar mean?

Safar  (سفر) is an Arabic term which refers to travelling, going on a journey, or transportation. It is also the second Islamic month of the lunar calendar and the month where Muslims used to vacate their homes to gather food.

According to hadith and the sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ) there are a number of duas one can recite for safar / travelling / going on a journey and we will cover them all in this one article.  Theses can be used for any method of transport whether by airplane, car, or boat.

Supplication For Travelling

Safar ki dua

In short, this hadith teaches to say the following:

  • (Bismillah) [three times]
  • Alhamdulillah
  • Subhan Alladhi Sakh-khara Lana Hadha Wa Ma Kunna Lahu Muqrinin. Wa Inna Ila Rabbina Lamunqalibun (Also referenced in  Surah Zukhruf ayat 13-14)
  • Alhamdulillah and Allahuakbar [three times]
  • Subhanaka Inni Qad Zalamtu Nafsi Faghfirli Fa-Innahu La Yaghfirudh-Dhunuba Illa Ant

The Full hadith is given below from Jami At-Tirmidhi, Vol. 6, Book of Supplications, Hadith 3446 Ali bin Rabi’ah said:

“I witnessed Ali having an animal brought to him to ride. When he placed his foot in the stirrup he said: ‘In the Name of Allah,’ (Bismillah) [three times]. So then, once he had ascended upon its back, he said: ‘All praise is due to Allah.’ (Al-Hamdulillah) then he said: Glory is to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we were not able to do it. And, surely, to our Lord are we returning (Subhan Alladhi Sakh-khara Lana Hadha Wa Ma Kunna Lahu Muqrinin. Wa Inna Ila Rabbina Lamunqalibun). Then he said: ‘All praise is due to Allah (Al-Hamdulillah)’ – three times – and ‘Allah is the Greatest (Allahu Akbar)’ – three times – ‘Glory is to You, indeed I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for indeed none forgives sins except You (Subhanaka Inni Qad Zalamtu Nafsi Faghfirli Fa-Innahu La Yaghfirudh-Dhunuba Illa Ant).’ Then he laughed. So I said: ‘O Commander of the Believer! What caused you to laugh?’ He said: ‘I saw the Messenger of Allah do as I did, then he ﷺ laughed, so I said, ‘What cause you to laugh?’ He said: ‘Indeed, your Lord if very pleased with His worshipper when he says: “O my Lord, forgive me my sins, indeed, no one other than You forgives sins.”

Invocation For Traveler

Transliteration: Bismiallahi wa alhamdu liallahi. Subhanaalladhi sakh-khara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbi-na la munqalibun.

Translation: In the name of Allah, and Praise be to Allah. Glory be to the one who has placed this (transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord we will surely return.

Dua Upon Reaching Destination

Transliteration: Allhum rab alsamawat alsbʿ wama aẓlun wa-rab alarḍyn alsbʿ wama aqlun warab alshayaṭyn wama aḍlun warab alryaḥ wama duhryn finna nasalak khayr hudh alqarya wkhyr ahlha wanʿwdh baka mn shrha washr ahlha washr ma fyha.

Translation: “O Allah, You are the Lord of the seven skies and all the things that are under these skies and the seven planets and whatever is over these and of Satan who misled and all those misled by him and for the wind and all that it blows. Thus we seek the good of this town and the good of its members (people) and seek refuge from its evil and the evil of its members and from the evils of whatever is in it”. (Hisnul Hasin from Ibn Habban)

Another Dua:

أعوذ بكلمات الله التامات من شر ما خلق

A’udhu bikalimat-illahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaqa

Khaulah bint Hakim (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying, “Whosoever alights somewhere and says: ‘A’udhu bikalimat-illahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaqa (I seek refuge with the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of what He has created),’ nothing will harm him until he leaves that place.” [Muslim] Riyad As Salihin. Arabic/English book reference : Book 8, Hadith 982

Other Hadiths About Safar and Safe Journey

The duas for safar covered this far are the most well known or common duas for journey. The rest of the article will focus on advice from Prophet Muhammad ( ﷺ ) regarding a safe travel and other Islamic traditions.

It’s Better To Travel With Others:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Were people to know of what I know about the dangers of travelling alone, no rider would travel alone at night.”. In another narration, The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “A single rider is (accompanied with) Satan and two riders are (accompanied with) two Satans. Three riders form a group.” 1

This was more applicable and good advice back during the Prophet’s time as travelling was far more treacherous at night especially if going alone. Today travelling at night is safer but you will not be as alert as you would when you first wake. Going on safar with group you’ll be less likely to make mistakes or be taken advantage of.

When Ascending To Heights (Going on Plane)

Ibn ‘Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) and his army ascended a height, they would proclaim: “Allahu Akbar (Allah is Greatest),” and when they climbed down, they would proclaim: “Subhan Allah (Allah is free from imperfection).” 2

Shortened Prayer While Vacationing:

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet (ﷺ) once stayed for nineteen days and prayed shortened prayers. So when we travel led (and stayed) for nineteen days, we used to shorten the prayer but if we traveled (and stayed) for a longer period we used to offer the full prayer. 3

Travel Dua & Best Practices

travel dua and best practices

Islam is a beautiful religion that gives a perfect guide to a way of life for all humans. As Muslims, every aspect of our lives has been arranged to our benefit, and we have been given everything that we need to live the best lives on Earth.

One of the beauties of Islam that many of us may take for granted is the fact that we have a dua for everything. From putting on your clothes to eating to traveling, every one of our actions can be a means of worshipping Allah (ta’ala) and earning rewards.

Whenever a Muslim sets out on a journey, we are encouraged to say some duas for our protection and safe return. This is the dua that the Messenger of Allah( ﷺ ) used to make whenever he traveled.

Dua of Travelling

“Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min wa’tha’is-safari, wa kabatil-munqalabi, wal-hawri ba’dal-kawri, wa da’watil-mazlumi, wa suw’il-munzari fil-ahli wal-mal”

“(O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the hardships of travel and the sorrows of return, from loss after plenty, from the supplication of the one who has been wronged, and seeing some calamity befall my family or wealth.)” ( Sunan an-Nasa’i )

We are encouraged to memorize the dua and recite it for every travel.

Best Practices for Travelling

Beyond the dua, it is important for a Muslim who seeks the protection of Allah (ta’ala) in their journey, to also keep within the limits laid down by Islam. These may be in terms of our mode of transport, Salah, or even meeting new people.

Stay Away from Fasting

The traveling person is exempted from fasting, according to a hadith narration which says

“I was traveling and I came to the Prophet when he was eating and I was fasting. He said: ‘Come and eat.’ I said: ‘I am fasting.’ He said: ‘Do you know what Allah has waived for the traveler?’ he said: ‘Do you know what Allah has waived for the traveler?’ I said: ‘What has Allah waived for the traveler?’ He said: ‘Fasting and half of the prayer.’” ( Sunan an-Nasa’i )

He (ﷺ) also said: “It is not righteousness to fast when traveling. Take to the concession which Allah, the mighty and sublime, has granted you, accept it.” ( Sunan an-Nasa’i )

This doesn’t mean that one is forbidden from fasting, however. Because in another narration, the Messenger of Allah was quoted to have said: “If you wish to fast then fast, and if you wish not to fast then do not fast.” ( Sunan an-Nasa’i )

Supplicate While Travelling

Apart from the dua of traveling, it is also encouraged to make dua while on the journey because the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “ Three supplications are answered, there being no doubt about them; that of a father, that of a traveler and that of one who has been wronged.” ( Sunan Abi Dawud )

Shorten Salah

As a traveler, a Muslim is permitted to shorten his Salah while on a journey. So, salahs like Zuhr and Asr with four rakats each becomes two rakats each. It is also permissible to combine two salahs, i.e praying Zuhr and Asr at the time of Zuhr, etc.

Aisha (RA) narrated that “The prayer was prescribed as consisting of two rak’ahs both when one was resident and when traveling. The prayer while traveling was left according to the original prescription and the prayer of one who was resident was enhanced.” ( Sunan Abi Dawud )

Travel with a Mahram

This is a traveling etiquette, particularly for Muslim women. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “A woman should not travel for more than three days except with a Dhi-Mahram.” ( Bukhari )

Even though many people do not take to this rule these days, we should always remember that it is proper traveling etiquette for a Muslim woman to travel accompanied by a male relative that is deemed unmarriageable for her in Islam. (Remember this is not compulsory or obligatory at all for a Muslim woman to travel with a mahram).

The dua for traveling is just one of many duas that we have as Muslims, and like all other duas, it is beneficial and rewarding for us when we make us of it.

Five Powerful Duas and Prayers for Traveling

dua for travelling salafi

Last updated on November 17th, 2021 at 08:40 am

Have you ever found yourself on the plane ready to take off, but unable to find your booklet of prayers for traveling? Often we find ourselves without access to these special duas or prayers when we need them the most. In our opinion, memorizing duas is the best solution.

One of the beautiful things about Islam is that there is a prayer for our normal daily activities and even prayers for traveling abroad .  When we embark on a journey, we should recite a prayer to Allah and remember Him. It brings us closer to Allah and also saves us from any untoward incident that may take place on our journey.

As per Islamic teachings, reciting a dua not only brings Allah’s protection; it also mobilizes angels to protect us during our journey and bring us safely back home to our loved ones.

Below are the five common duas that Muslims recite before journeys, complete with Arabic verse, dua transliteration, source, and explanation.

1. Prayer for Safety When Embarking on Travel

  • Arabic Verse: وَقُل رَّبِّ أَنزِلْنِى مُنزَلًا مُّبَارَكًا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلْمُنزِلِينَ
  • Dua Transliteration: Rabbi anzilni munzalan mubarokan wa anta khairul munzilin
  • English Translation: My Lord, let me land at a blessed landing-place, and You are the best to accommodate [us].
  • Source: Surah Al Muminun ayat 29

When embarking on travel, this dua is recited to protect oneself from any mishap and to ensure a safe landing. When you recite this dua, you will feel calmer and less anxious about your upcoming trip.

It is always helpful to start a journey by remembering Allah. This prayer is useful to keep with you whenever you are packing for your trip so that you can easily recite it once you leave your home or on the plane.

This prayer asks Allah to protect us when traveling abroad . It also helps us proclaim our faith and affirm the fact that there is no one that can protect us except Allah.

2. Prayer for Safety During the Trip

  • Arabic Verse:
  • English Translation: Glory unto Him Who created this transportation, for us, though we were unable to create it on our own. And unto our Lord, we shall return.
  • Source: Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:13-14

This excerpt from Surah Az-Zukhruf is a masnoon prayer that thanks Allah for providing us with the means of transportation to make our journey. This dua is short and can be easily memorized so that it becomes a habit to recite it when on a journey.

The Holy Prophet (ﷺ) recited this Surah as dua when he would mount an animal for traveling . He would say Bismillah and then recite this prayer for travel safety . We may be traveling by car, plane, train, or boat; whatever the means of transportation is, it is always important to remember Allah during our journey.

3. Prayer for Traveling to a New Place

  • Arabic Verse:
  • Dua Transliteration: Wa-qul Rabbi Adkhilnee Mudkhala S’idqiw Wa Akhrijnee Mukhraja S’diqiw Waj-a’l Lee Mil Ladunkaa Sult’aanan Nas’eeraa
  • English Translation: O Lord, cause me to enter a goodly entrance and cause me to go out a goodly exit, and grant me from you an authority to assist (me).
  • Source: Sura Al-‘Isra 17:80

The prophet (ﷺ) was in Makkah and had to emigrate to Madinah when Allah revealed this verse. The Holy Prophet (ﷺ) was being attacked by individuals in Makkah and was preparing to enter a new place.

This verse asks for Allah’s protection when taking a big decision and traveling to a new place. This decision could be anything from moving to a new city to even moving to a new home. In this prayer, we are asking Allah to bless our entrance and exit. We are looking for His assistance and blessing while we take this decision.

4. Prayer upon Reaching Destination Safely

  • Arabic Verse: وَقَالَ ارْكَبُواْ فِيهَا بِسْمِ اللّهِ مَجْرَاهَا وَمُرْسَاهَا إِنَّ رَبِّي لَغَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
  • Dua Transliteration: Va kealarkaboo feehea bismilleahi macreahea va murseahea, inna raabbee la gaafoorun raaheem
  • English Translation: Embark there in! In the name of Allah be its course or its mooring. Lo! My Lord is Forgiving and Merciful!
  • Source: Surah Al-Hud – 11:41

This verse is from Sura Hud, which relays the trials and tribulations of Prophet Noah allehisalam. Prophet Noah was commanded by Allah to create a ship and load it with two creatures (male and female) of every living thing that had a soul.

When the command came to leave on the ship, a strong storm came that brought heavy rainfall. This verse was then revealed at that time and means that the moving course and resting (anchorage) of the ship will be all in Allah’s hands.

This is a specific verse in the Surah and is often used when someone reaches their destination safely. It is a small and short prayer that can be memorized easily when traveling abroad and after you have reached your destination.

5. Prayer Upon Returning Home

  • Arabic Verse: آيِبُونَ تَائِبُونَ عابِدُونَ ساجِدُونَ لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُونَ
  • Dua Transliteration: Ayibun, ta’ibun, ‘abidun, sajidun, lirabbina hamidun
  • English Translation: We return, repentant, worshipping, prostrating, and praising our Lord.

3 – Dua When Visiting A Place For First Time:

Many times, it happens that we travel to a place for the first time, and in our hearts lie many apprehensions associated with the journey. Students travel to different lands for their higher studies, people travel for their jobs knowing as less as nothing about their job environment. Fear of new place and anxiety of meeting new people is very natural in these circumstances. Travel Duas - 6 Islamic Duas To Recite When Traveling

Translation :

Glory be to the One Who has placed this (transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our, Lord is our final destiny. O Allah, we ask You for righteousness and piety in this journey of ours, and we ask You for deeds which please You. O Allah, facilitate our journey and let us cover its distance quickly. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Successor (the One Who guards them in a person’s absence) over the family. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the difficulties of travel, from having a change of heart and from being in a bad predicament, and I seek refuge with You from an ill-fated outcome with regard to wealth and family. – (Narrated by Muslim, 1342)

Can you see, how beautifully Allah has guided His men in every aspect of life? Can you see why Islam is seen as a code of life? It is because of these minute precisions Allah has given to us! The one who has created us has formulated basic codes so that we are not left alone anywhere, and we remind ourselves that Allah is present nearest to us and takes care of our journey. We just need to work on the ethics of travel. We need to recite the days telling Allah that we only put our trust in Him.

Q. Should You Pray Before Traveling?

A. Yes, it is highly recommended to say 2 raka’at nafal prayers before you start your journey. As the Prophet PBUH said:

“When you leave your house, perform two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evils. When you return home, perform another two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evils.”

Similarly, when you come back home after the journey, you should again say 2 raka’at prayer to thank Allah.

Q. Are Duas Accepted When Traveling?

A. The Prophet PBUH has told us about certain times of the day or certain instances in life when the chances of acceptance of prayer are very high. One of these times is when a Muslim is traveling. So if your trip and your dua are both for a good reason, remember Allah during the journey and He will surely remember you.

As the Prophet PBUH said:

Three supplications will not be rejected (by Allah (SWT)), the supplication of the parent for his child, the supplication of the one who is fasting, and the supplication of the traveler. [al-Bayhaqi, at-Tirmidhi – Sahih]

Dua For Travelling in English | Best Duas Before & After Travelling

Are you all set for your traveling be sure to recite these duas for traveling which are collected from the books of hadith..

by Mohammed Saadullah Khan

Allah SWT is the creator and sustainer of the entire universe. Every person living on this earth works day and night to fulfill his household needs and earns a living to feed himself and his family with great effort. If he does all these things under the commandments of God and the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH), then they all become acts of worship.

But if he does not follow the Islamic rules in these matters and breaks those by adopting illegal methods or starts killing the rights of others in the name of economic struggle, then this effort can become a source of disgrace for him in the hereafter. Islam has guided us in every matter and even Prophet (peace be upon Him) taught us the dua and manners for travelling also.

Why Do We Need to Read Dua for Travelling?

When we travel, we are surrounded by countless dangers. To be safe from these dangers, we can remove the possible dangers by following the commands of the Prophet (peace be upon Him) and the rulings stated by them. It is clear that by doing prayers, giving charity, and many other such things, and by following the rules and precautions, we can keep ourselves safe from every kind of danger. We should not forget to read dua for travelling before leaving our home and after coming back home.

Best Dua for Travelling in English

English transliteration : Subhan Alladhi Sakh-Khara Lana Hadha Wa Ma Kunna Lahu Muqrinin. Wa Inna Ila Rabbina Lamunqalibun

” title="Advertise and Market to Muslims" target="_blank">Ads by Muslim Ad Network

“So, that you may sit firmly on their backs, and remember your Lord’s blessings once you are settled on them, saying, “Glory be to the One who has subjected these for us, for we could have never done so ˹on our own. And surely to our Lord, we will all return.”

– [ Surah Zukhruf ayat 13-14 ]

That is, among all the creatures of the earth, only man has been given the authority by Allah SWT to use boats and ships and animals as rides. Should he never wonder who it is that made it possible for him to navigate the great seas and who created some of the innumerable animals that became his slaves? Taking advantage of these blessings and forgetting the benefactor is a sign of a dead heart and a numb conscience.

Because when a person with a lively heart and a sensitive conscience sits on these paths, he will be filled with a sense of blessings and a spirit of gratitude and will cry: ‘Blessed is He who subjugated these things to me. He is purer than that another partakes of His being, attributes, and powers. He is pure and free from the weakness of being helpless to perform his divine functions by himself and dependent on other co-gods. He is pure that I should share these blessings with someone else.

Dua’s for Travelling From Hadith:

1. It was narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mounted his camel to set out on a journey, he would say takbeer three times, then he would say:

Subhanaalladhi sakh-khara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrineen wa inna ila rabbina la munqaliboon

English Translation : Glory be to the One Who has placed this (transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord is our final destiny.

– [ Sahih Muslim 1342 ]

Dua For Traveling in English

2. There’s a popular Dua for travelling from [ Sunan Abi Dawud 5095 ] (graded as Sahih by Al-Albani) which we must read after leaving the house. I personally recite this Dua every single time before I start my journey.

English transliteration :

Bismillahi tawakkaltu ‘alallah la hawla wala quwwata illa billah

English translation : In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah; there is no might and no power but in Allah.

Narrated Anas ibn Malik:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: When a man goes out of his house and says: “In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah; there is no might and no power but in Allah,” the following will be said to him at that time: “You are guided, defended and protected.” The devils will go far from him and another devil will say: How can you deal with a man who has been guided, defended and protected?

You can also check the meaning of this Dua here .

Remembering Allah SWT at all times brings a person even closer to Him. Moreover, it only takes only a few seconds to recite this beautiful Dua that our Prophet (SAWS) taught us to read for traveling. When you recite the Dua, be sure to put all your trust in Him.

How to Start And End Your Travel With Dua?

Narrated Ali ibn Abu Talib: Ali ibn Rabiah said: I was present with Ali while a beast was brought to him to ride. When he put his foot in the stirrup, he said: “In the name of Allah”. Then when he sat on its back, he said: “Praise be to Allah”. He then said: “Glory be to Him Who has made this subservient to us, for we had not the strength, and to our Lord do we return”. He then said: “Praise be to Allah (thrice); Allah is Most Great (thrice): glory be to Thee, I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for only Thou forgivest sins.” He then laughed. He was asked: At what did you laugh? He replied: I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) do as I have done, and laugh after that. I asked: Messenger of Allah, at what are you laughing? He replied: Your Lord, Most High, is pleased with His servant when he says: “Forgive me my sins.” He knows that no one forgives sins except Him.

– [ Abu Dawood:2602 , Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani)]

To read the above supplication is actually useful to protect ourselves from any harm. Likewise, this dua after reaching the destination is the protection from all evil and bad things.

Traveling gives an excitement to the soul of man and gives joy to his heart. And in the Holy Qur’an, God Almighty has called consideration of the living conditions of the past people as an example and a reason to learn a good lesson from them. The prophet (peace be upon him) has given great consideration to this important movement of human life and has given special importance to traveling. It was the blessed habit of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he used to read dua for travelling when he starts his traveling and end his traveling with dua.

Dua when travelling

Dua is a manifestation of one’s faith and trust in Allah (SWT). It reflects the belief that Allah (SWT) is the ultimate protector and provider, and only He has the power to grant safety and security. Therefore, making Dua before and during travel not only helps in seeking protection but also strengthens one’s faith and reliance on Allah (SWT).

We should try to learn these 5 essential dua when travelling

Dua before starting the journey

Dua for leaving home, dua for boarding a vehicle, dua during the journey.

  • Dua upon reaching the destination

Dua when travelling

Reference to this dua:

Narrated by Anas bin Malik r.a, The Messenger of Allah s.a.w. said:

من قالَ يَعني إذا خرجَ من بيتِهِ: بِسمِ اللَّهِ، توَكَّلتُ على اللَّهِ، لا حَولَ ولا قوَّةَ إلَّا باللَّهِ، يقالُ لَهُ: كُفيتَ، ووُقيتَ، وتنحَّى عنهُ الشَّيطانُ

“Whoever says (upon leaving his house): “In the Name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, there is no might or power except by Allah”,’it will be said to him: ‘You have been sufficed and protected, and the devil will go far away from him”. (Sunan At-Tirmizi)

Umm Salamah   رضي الله عنها said, “Never did the Prophet  صلى الله عليه وسلم leave my house without looking towards heaven, supplicating:

الَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَضِلَّ، أَوْ أُضَلَّ، أَوْ أَزِلَّ، أَوْ أُزَلَّ، أَوْ أَظْلِمَ، أَوْ أُظْلَمَ، أَوْ أَجْهَلَ، أَوْ يُجْهَلَ عَلَيَّ

Allaahumma ‘innee ‘a’oodhu bika ‘an ‘adhilla, ‘aw ‘udhalla, ‘aw ‘azilla, ‘aw ‘uzalla, ‘aw ‘adhlima, ‘aw ‘udhlama, ‘aw ‘ajhala ‘aw yujhala ‘alayya

O Allah, I seek refuge in You lest I misguide others, or I am misguided by others, lest I cause others to err or I am caused to err, lest I abuse others or be abused, and lest I behave foolishly or meet with the foolishness of others.

Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, An-Nasa’i, Sahih At-Tirmidhi 3/152 and Sahih Ibn Majah 2/336

Dua when travelling

It is recommended to make Dua upon boarding any vehicle as recommended by Our Prophet s.a.w. by saying:

سُبْحَانَ الذي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هذا، وَما كُنَّا له مُقْرِنِينَ، وإنَّا إلى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ

“Subhanal-ladzi sakh-khara lana hadza wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbina lamun-qalibun.”

In the name of Allah and all praise is for Allah. How perfect He is, the One Who has placed this (transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord is our final destiny. (Sahih Muslim)

Dua when travelling

Allahumma inna nas-aluka fi safarina haza-l-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-‘amali ma tardho. Allahumma hawwin ‘alaina safarana haza, watwi ‘anna bu’dahu, Allahumma antas-sohibu fis-safar wal-khalifatu fil-ahli. Allahumma inni a-‘uzu bika min wa’atha-is-safar, wa kabbati-manzar, wa su-i-lmunqalabi fil-mal wal-ahli

O Allah, we ask You in our travel for righteousness, taqwa, and good deeds that You are pleased with. O Allah make our travel an ease, and shorten the distance for us. O Allah, You are our Companion in travel and the guardian of our family (in our absence). O Allah I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, a sight of grief, and from an unfortunate occurance in wealth and family. (Sahih Muslim, Riyadh as saliheen )

The Fiqh of Travel

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

ANISUL MUSAFIR

[By Mawlana Abu Usama: Fahim Husain] For the full work: http://www.direct.za.org/Fiqh/Anisul_Musafir/Anis_-_Musafir_Rules/body_anis_-_musafir_rules.html

RULES RELATING TO A MUSAFIR

WHO IS A MUSAFIR?

1. The person who sets out with the intention of eventually travelling three manzils (approx. 77 km) * is regarded as a musafir in the Shari`ah . [* This is the Fatwa of Mufti Mahmud Gangohi (r.a.) as mentioned, in detail, in Masa’il-e-Safar of Mawlana Rafat Qasmi p 43 and briefly in Fatawa Mahmudiyyah v 2 p 269 and v 2 p 274. Mufti Rashid Ahmad has also given Fatwa on 77 km in Ahsan al Fatawa v4 p105] 2. The moment he comes out of the boundaries of his town or city he becomes a musafir . Within the boundaries of his town or city, he will not be a musafir .

If the airport is within the boundaries of the city (in the sense that the buildings of the city are linked to it without a considerable break in between) it will fall under the rule of the city and the person will not be considered a musafir when he reaches it. If it is outside the boundaries, then upon reaching it, the person will be regarded as a musafir .

PRINCIPLE: A person will not become a musafir until he firmly intends to travel 77 km from the place he is in.

Thus a person who travels from place to place, intending to travel less than 77 km each time, will not become a musafir – even if he travels the entire world in this way!

THE ( QASR ) SALAH OF A MUSAFIR

1. When a person qualifies as a musafir according to the Shari`ah he is required to offer two rak`ah s for the Fard of Zuhr, `Asr and `Isha’ Salah . The other Salahs remain as normal.

2. More than two rak`ah s should not be offered for the Fard of Zuhr, `Asr and `Isha’ Salah . If a person mistakenly offered four raka`at for these Salahs , and he had sat down for Tashahhud ( al-Tahiyyat ) in the second rak`ah , then the first two rak`ah s will be regarded as Fard and the other two rak`ahs as nafl .

3. In the above case he will have to make sajdah al-sahw . If he did not make sajdah al-sahw then he must repeat the Salah if its time still remains.

4. If he did not sit in the second rak`ah then all four raka`at will become nafl and he will have to repeat his Fard Salah .

BECOMING A MUQIM (RESIDENT)

1. A person will remain a musafir and will continue offering two rak`ah s for the four- raka`at Salahs until he makes the definite intention of staying at a place for fifteen days or more.

2. The place where he makes this intention is known as his Watan al-Iqamah . He must offer four raka`at Salah here.

3. If he makes the intention of staying for 15 days whilst in Salah then he must offer this very Salah as a muqim i.e. 4 raka`at .

PRINCIPLE: A musafir will not become a muqim until he firmly intends to stay at a place for a period of fifteen days from the time he makes this intention.

Based on the above principle consider the following two cases:

a) A person stops at a place intending to stay for two or three days. Due to circumstances every day he makes the intention of leaving the following day but he still does not leave. In this way fifteen days, twenty days, a month or even more passes, but he did not, at any point, make the firm intention of staying there for fifteen days. In this case he will remain a musafir irrespective of how many days he stays at that place.

b) A person intends to stay at a place for ten days but after seven days he decides to extend his stay by an additional ten days (which will make his total stay twenty days.) In this case he will remain a musafir . This is because after he had decided to stay ten more days there were thirteen days of his total stay remaining. Hence at no point did he make the intention to stay for fifteen days. In other words, ‘fifteen days’ is considered from the time he changed his intention and not from the beginning of his stay.

4. The intention of staying fifteen days has to be for staying the full fifteen days at one place. If he makes an intention of staying for 15 days at two different places, and the distance between the two places is such that the adhan of one place cannot be heard at the other, then he will be a musafir in both those places.

E.g. If a person intends staying for 10 days in Makkah and 5 days in Mina he will be a musafir both in Makkah and Mina.

Thus a Haji who arrives in Makkah less than fifteen full days before the morning of the 8 th of Dhu al-Hijjah will be a musafir .

If he arrives in Makkah fifteen days or more before the 8 th then he will be a muqim both in Makkah and Mina.

5. If in the above case (i.e. Law 4) he intends spending all the fifteen nights at one place then he will be a muqim in that place.

6. If both places are so close that each other’s adhan can be heard, then both places will be regarded as one place. He will become a muqim in both places by intending to stay there for 15 days.

7. After becoming a muqim (by firmly intending to stay at a place for fifteen days) if he changes his intention and decides to leave before fifteen days then he will not become a musafir .

8. When he leaves with the intention of eventually travelling to another place that is at a distance of 77 kilometres or more then only will he become a musafir . If that place is less than 77 kilometres away, he will not become a musafir .

OTHER SALAH ON A JOURNEY

1. Sunnah Salah should not be unduly missed during the journey. However if the musafir is in a hurry then, apart from the Sunnah of Fajr , it will be permissible for him to omit the other Sunnah Salahs . If he is not in a hurry nor does he fear his companions leaving him behind then he should offer all the Sunnah Salahs.

2. There is no reduction in the number of raka`at of Sunnah Salah .

3. Sunnah and Nafl Salah can be offered whilst seated in a moving vehicle if it is outside the town. The salah must be commenced facing the Qiblah . Thereafer, if the vehicle turns, resulting in the Qiblah direction changing, the musalli does not have to turn towards the Qiblah .

4. Witr Salah is wajib . Hence it must be offered whilst on a journey as well. If it is missed then qada’ must be made.

5. Qada’ of Salah s missed whilst on a journey will be two rak`ah s for Zuhr , `Asr and `Isha . This applies even when the qada’ is being made at home or as a muqim in any other place.

6. If any Salah, such as Zuhr, is missed before embarking on a journey then qada’ of it whilst on the journey must be made in full i.e. four raka`at .

The principle in laws 5 and 6 above is that the condition of a person, whether musafir or muqim , is considered in the final moments of that Salah . Accordingly the status of the Qada’ Salah (i.e. whether it is two or four raka`at ) will be determined.

THE HOMETOWN (AL-WATAN AL-ASLI)

A person’s hometown is the place where he resides with his family and belongings without having a definite intention of relocating.

1. Immediately upon entering his hometown the musafir will become a muqim whether he intends staying for fifteen days or not.

2. This also applies when a musafir , during the course of his journey, passes through his hometown i.e. he will immediately become a muqim . If he merely bypasses his hometown but doesn’t enter its boundaries then he will remain a musafir .

3. If a person moves to another town and settles there permanently then this second town becomes his hometown and the first town is no longer his hometown.

RULES RELATING TO WOMEN

1. If a woman begins a journey whilst she is in the the state of haid (menstruation) then the distance she covers in that state is not considered as part of the Safar distance. Hence, if the haid continues until she reaches her destination she will not be a musafir .

However if, during the course of the journey, she attains purity from her haid and there is still a distance of 77 km or more to her destination, then she will become a musafir .

2. If when she leaves home she was pure and her haid begins during the course of the journey then she will be a musafir .

3. The hometown of a woman who begins living with her husband after her marriage will become that of her husband’s. Her original hometown (i.e. the place where she was residing with her parents) will no longer remain her hometown.

4. It is a major sin for a woman to travel 77 kilometres or more without her husband or a mature ( baligh ) male mahram . She should not even travel less than 77 kilometres without her husband or mahram .

This law also applies to women travelling for Hajj or `Umrah . A woman must have her husband or a mahram accompanying her in these journeys as well.

5. It is also not permissible for a woman to travel with a mahram who does not fear Allah Ta`ala and does not abide by the laws of Shari`ah .

6. The Wali (male person accompanying the woman) must be able to fulfil the role of a competent Wali in guarding the chastity and honour of the woman.

RULES RELATING TO SALAH ON AN AIRCRAFT, TRAIN, SHIP, etc.

1. Fard Salah has to be offered in a standing posture in a moving ship, train or aircraft.

2. If a person feels dizzy by offering Salah standing or fears that he will fall then he is allowed to sit and offer Salah .

3. The musalli must face the Qiblah whilst offering Salah in a moving vehicle.

4. If the vehicle turns and the direction of the Qiblah changes then he will also have to turn in his Fard Salah towards the Qiblah . *

5. If a person is offering Salah and the vehicle, which has his belongings or family, is about to leave then it will be permissible for him to break his Salah . The Salah must then be offered later.

SALAH WITH JAMA`AH

1. As far as possible Salah should be offered in jama`ah whilst on a journey.

2. A muqim (i.e. a resident or non- musafir ) can follow an imam who is a musafir whether it is an ada’ Salah (i.e. a Salah in its time) or a qada’ Salah .

3. In the above case, when the musafir imam completes his Salah of 2 rak`ah s and makes salam , the muqim follower ( muqtadi ) should stand up without making salam and complete his Salah . He must not recite any Qira’ah in the 2 rak`ah s he is completing. He should merely remain silent for the duration of Surah al-Fatihah .

4. When the musafir imam makes salam , it is preferable ( mustahab ) for him to inform his followers that he is a musafir . It is preferable that he also informs them before commencing the Salah .

5. A musafir can also follow an imam who is a muqim as long as it is within the time of that Salah . If the time has expired then he can follow him for the Fajr and Maghrib Salah s and not for the Zuhr , `Asr , and `Isha Salahs .

FASTING FOR A MUSAFIR

1. A musafir is permitted to abstain from the fast of Ramadan although it is meritorious for him to fast if it isn’t difficult. The qada’ of the fasts missed will have to be made.

2. If a musafir who was not fasting in Ramadan becomes a muqim , either by returning home or by intending to stay at a place for fifteen days, then he has to compulsorily abstain from eating etc. for the rest of the day. However he still has to make qada’ of that day.

3. If he did not eat anything since sehri time then he can make the intention of fasting if it’s before Al-Dahwah Al-Kubra (approximately an hour before zawal .) In this case the fast will be valid and no qada’ is necessary. After this time (i.e. al-dahwah al-kubra ) he cannot make the intention to fast but he still has to abstain from eating for the remainder of the day and qada’ of that day is necessary.

4. If a muqim who is fasting begins a journey then he must complete that fast. He cannot break the fast.

MISCELLANEOUS MASA’IL

1. If a person leaves his home with the intention of travelling 77 kilometres but after travelling a distance less than 77 km, he changes his mind and decides to return home then from the moment he makes the intention of returning, he will no longer remain a musafir . *

[*Al-Durr al-Mukhtar v 2 p 134]

2. It is preferable ( mustahab ) to give adhan and sunnah to say the iqamah whilst on a journey.

3. If a person makes sajdah on something made out of straw or cotton wool he must press his head down firmly such that he cannot press any further. If he does not press it down firmly, but merely places his head lightly, his sajdah will not be valid. The same applies to sajdah on grass.

4. During Salah it is makruh to gather one’s clothes to prevent them from becoming soiled.

5. Whilst on a journey after reading Surah al-Fatihah , in Salah , any other Surah can be recited. The Sunnah Qira’ah for the various Salah does not have to be adhered to.

6. Jumu`ah , `Id and Qurbani are not compulsory upon a traveller. However there is still more reward if these actions are fulfilled even whilst on a journey.

  • O Allah, You are our Companion on the road and the One in Whose care we leave our family.
  • O Allah, I seek refuge in You from this journey’s hardships, and from the wicked sights in store and from finding our family and property in misfortune upon returning.

What Did Prophet Muhammad SAW Say About Travel?

Ibn Umar, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported that when the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam, would ride on his camel in order to travel, he would say:

Allaah is the greatest [Allaahu Akbar], three times, then would say:

Transcendent is Allaah who has subjugated this for us, and we were not powerful ourselves enough to use it as a ride and to Allaah is our return. O Allaah, we ask in this travel of ours, for piety, righteousness, and actions that please You. O Allaah, make this travel easy on us, and make its distance shortened. O Allaah, You are the companion in travel, and the caretaker of the family. O Allaah, we seek refuge in You from tiredness of travel, looking sorrowful, and from an evil return in wealth or family.

When he, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, would return, he would say:

We have returned; we repent to Allaah, worship Allaah, and thank our Lord.

Reported by Muslim (1342 )

Transcendent is Allaah who has subjugated this for us, and we were not powerful ourselves enough to use it as a ride, the occasion of beginning with this remembrance and starting with:

Transcendent, is to deem Allaah the Exalted, in that subjugating riding beast for us is a great favor that none besides Him and do, so it is appropriate to rule Him as transcendent and having no partners in such an instance.

To Allaah is our return , the occasion of this is that since riding a boat or a riding beast might lead to death at times, that causes them to remember their hereafter, so it was appropriate to mention the hereafter, because the riding beast is one of the means that one is destroyed, which would cause them to fear Allaah on their riding beast and on their travels.

O Allaah, You are the companion in travel, meaning, the One that preserves and helps.

The origin of the word refers to accompanying, and it refers to the accompanying of Allaah by way of care, preservation, and maintaining.

So, through this statement, he, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, brought notice to reliance on and sufficing with Him apart from any other companion.

The caretaker of the family, the caretaker or successor is the one that takes the place of someone in caring for their affairs.

At-Tooribishti, may Allaah have mercy on him, said:

The meaning is that You, O Allaah, am the One that I seek and rely on in my travel, in that You be my helper and preserver, as well as in my absence away from my family, to tidy them, cure them, and preserve their religion and trusts for me.

Looking sorrowful, meaning, I seek refuge in You from anything that necessitates sorrow, such as losing out on what I want, and something happening that I was previously cautious of.

From an evil return, meaning, I seek refuge in You from an evil return, where I would be affected with sadness or sickness.

In wealth or family, such as going back while not completing their needs, or to some calamity in oneself, such as sickness, in wealth, such as having one’s wealth stolen, either all or some of it, or in family, such as the wife, servants, or relative, such as one of them getting sick or dying.

Al-Faa’iq states: An sorrowful return refers to a person returning to their country to find something that would make them sorrowful in terms of something that befalls then in this travels, or in what they are approaching.

Islam calls us to remain in a permanent relationship with God Almighty at all times because of the great benefits that accrue to the individual.

From that, the Messenger of Allah SAW taught us to supplicate to Allah in our house and when we travel, just as the traveler needs to feel the presence of Allah in his travels for what is in that is from fatigue and hardship, as it came in the hadith.

The prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, gave precedence to preservation of religion over preservation of trust, because he was keen on it, and because traveling is a time when a person would be fearful, in danger, could be hurt, and could face hardships and tiredness, causing them to neglect some aspects regarding religion, such as delaying prayer past its due time, and so forth, as is seen.

Anas, may Allaah be pleased with him, said that a man approached the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, and said:

O Messenger of Allaah, I am traveling, so give me provisions. He, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, said:

May Allaah give you provisions in the form of piety [Taqwa].

The man said: Increase me. He, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, said:

May He also forgive your sins. The man said: Increase me. The Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, said: May He also facilitate goodness for you wherever you are.

  • May Allaah give you provisions in the form of piety [Taqwa],” because the best of provisions is piety, and it is the provision of the hereafter.
  • May He also forgive your sins, meaning, all of your sins, and especially the sins that you do when traveling.
  • May He also facilitate goodness for you wherever you are, meaning, may He make religious and worldly goodness, such as Hajj, fighting in battle, knowledge, seeking lawful sustenance, keeping the ties of the womb, and so forth, facilitated for you, regardless of where you are going and headed to.

It is also a possibility that the man was asking for actual provisions, as in, what is known to be provisions, but the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, responded to him in a wise way, and that is by telling him that your provision occurs when you keep away from the prohibitions of Allaah and keep away from disobeying Him the Exalted.

Best Dua For Travelling – To Have Safe Journey

Dua For Travelling

One of the best things about Islam is that we have dua almost everything. From eating, sitting, sleeping, and even traveling. There can be many benefits for us to reciting duas.

Benefits Of Dua For Travelling

Whenever a Muslim travels or steps out of the home for a journey, whether it is a short distance or long distance traveling, we recite some duas. So we can have a safe journey and receive the blessings of Almighty Allah.

  • If a person recites dua for traveling, then the Angels protect you while you get back home.
  • Reciting dua when traveling can save an individual from incidents that one has never imagined.
  • By reciting dua, a person is more likely to perform good deeds and have a positive day ahead.
  • Allah grants the traveler ease in his journey.
  • Reciting duas leads to blessings from Allah.

Hundreds of thousands of people usually die because of traffic accidents in bikes, cars, planes, etc., all across the world, so traveling can be quite fatal. As we grew up, we heard about a lot of plane crashes and other dangerous events. So we need to seek help from Allah to stay protected and safe, and he is the only one who can protect us from dangerous hazards and accidents.

We must also try our best to minimize our traveling unless it is necessary or urgent as Muslims. We need to recite duas more often so we can stay blessed and safe from the curse of shaitan at the same time.
