Welcome Back: 36 Crazyfists

36 Crazyfists are back on form and loving every minute.

36 crazyfists tour 2023

Despite a sold-out UK tour last year, it has been half a decade since 36 Crazyfists released new music. At that point, it felt as though they’d lost their shot at achieving something substantial following 2010’s Collisions And Castaways, an album that frontman Brock Lindow freely admits “isn’t the band’s best work”.

While the band were feeling a barren spell creatively (following a superb run of form early in their career), the real reason there has been such a lack of 36CF action is one that’s far more traumatic. /o:p

“My mother was diagnosed with cancer in 2011 so I swore off music for the rest of the year to be with her,” Brock says. “She passed that year and I needed time to process the fragility of life and after that I discovered how much I need music. I needed it as an outlet. Things turned for me personally and I got excited about music again; I was getting fired up about new material and it’s ended up being one of the coolest records we’ve done.”

It’s quite the statement, as 36CF mark their 20th anniversary with the release of Time And Trauma .

“Thinking about being a band for 20 years makes me feel old!” laughs Brock. “It’s natural for a band to lose their fire and I guess that’s what happened to us towards the end of our last run. We didn’t feel that at the time, but it feels like it now that we all feel as passionate about the band as we do again.”

That fire rages through lead single Also Am I , recalling the band’s nitro thrust material on Bitterness The Star and A Snow Capped Romance : hardcore power with metal flair wrap around Brock’s unique voice to create one hell of a punch to please the 36CF congregation, which is exactly the band’s aim this time around.

“It’s not about being the biggest band in the world anymore. We just want to show the people who still care about us how much we care about them through some killer new songs.”

36 Crazyfists, ‘Lanterns’ – Album Review

Every band and every person goes through ups and downs. For Alaska veterans 36 Crazyfists , their previous album Time and Trauma was a rebirth of sorts. They had a couple of lineup changes and signed with a new label. The success of the record, their highest charting release to-date, was a definite uptick, but life got in the way, leading to a down period.

Lanterns was written during what frontman Brock Lindow calls the lowest point in his life. “It was extreme depression,” Lindow reveals. “I got divorced after 13 years. That tailspun me a little bit. A number of things happened that I wasn’t used to. I’m a pretty upbeat guy, and I’m not accustomed to that feeling. It was a difficult writing process for me. Things didn’t flow for a long time, because I couldn’t get focused outside of my everyday life.” He eventually embraced the healing potential of the writing process, everything came together and he describes the results as “a lot more real and raw this time.”

That rawness is reflected on the album's opening track “Death Eater.” It's one of the heaviest and most aggressive songs on the record (with a title inspired by a Harry Potter character), as Lindow delivers emotional growls and screams along with melodic singing. Some ominous spoken word parts add even more diversity.

“Better to Burn” is another heavy track with ample groove. Guitarist Steve Holt had a large role in the creative process, as he once again produced the album along with handling the mixing duties. His performance on the album is excellent, as he was able to inject that aforementioned groove with a thick tone. That's balanced with cleaner, hard rock parts that give some songs a very modern sound.

“Walk Away From Wars” is much more accessible and melodic with mostly clean vocals and plenty of punch. The acoustic “Where Revenge Ends” features soulful baritone vocals with a folky grunge vibe, and halfway through the album, it acts as a respite before the intensity kicks back in with “Sleepsick.” “Bandage for Promise” is a melancholy and emotional song, but the energy does not lag.

There aren't as many memorable songs on the back half of the album as the first, which isn't uncommon. Things pick up with “Below the Graves” which features some Pantera-flavored riffs, and the cathartic “Old Gold.” The album ends on a somber note with the reserved “Dark Corners.”

Lanterns lights the way with songs that are mature, but not world-weary. The songwriting is sharp and focused, with ample heaviness for metal fans and enough hooks and melodies to make hard rock fans happy.

Chris gotterup storms up myrtle beach classic leaderboard after late birdie blitz, share this article.

36 crazyfists tour 2023

Chris Gotterup birdied six of his last eight holes, including four straight to close out his round of 64, to grab the solo lead after 36 holes at the inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic.

The third opposite-field event on the PGA Tour’s 2024 schedule is being held at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club in South Carolina, where the 2022 Haskins Award winner went on a late tear, chipping to two-feet for a tap-in birdie on No. 15, sinking a six-footer for birdie on No. 16, draining a 50-footer for birdie on the par-3 17th and closing with a 17-foot birdie putt on 18.

“We were really just executing shots pretty solidly down the stretch there,” the former Oklahoma Sooner said. “It got pretty windy, so definitely a good finish for me today.”

Robert MacIntyre, tied for the lead after an opening 64, held the solo lead for the good part of Friday before Gotterup stormed up the leaderboard with his birdie onslaught. Still, MacIntyre shot 64-67 and is at 11 under, just a shot back. Should he hoist the trophy Sunday, MacIntyre would be the 16th left-handed golfer to win a PGA Tour event .

Jorge Campillo is solo third at 10 under and there are four golfers at 9 under, tied for fourth.

There have been six first-time winners in 2024. Twelve of the top 14 golfers on the leaderboard after 36 holes are seeking their first PGA Tour win.

Blades Brown, 16, a three-time boys golf individual state champion in Tennessee , made the cut in his PGA Tour debut . He shot 72-67 and finished 3 under, one better than the cutline of 2 under. He’s the latest youngster to make noise at the professional level .
