Carlos Alcaraz wins Madrid Open against Struff for fourth title of 2023
- Spaniard beats Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 3-6, 6-3
- ‘For me it is so, so special to lift the trophy here’
The world No 2 Carlos Alcaraz beat the lucky loser Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the Madrid Open final on Sunday to defend last year’s title and win his fourth ATP Tour trophy of the year and his 10th overall.
Alcaraz, who had an injury-plagued start to the season, came back in top form last month to win the Barcelona Open for the second consecutive year. In Madrid, the 20-year-old Spaniard had to play his best tennis to beat a relentless Struff in three sets in a packed Caja Magica.
Alcaraz enjoyed a dream start to the match, breaking Struff’s serve in the first game. The German fought back to return the favour in the fourth but the Spaniard produced another break and closed the set 6-4.
Struff’s aggressive returns helped him to rush to a 3-0 lead in the second set, which he took 6-3, but Alcaraz woke up in the third, breaking to lead 3-1 and taking the set 6-3. The victory was the fourth ATP Masters 1000 trophy for Alcaraz, who became the youngest world No 1 last September when he won the US Open.
“For me it is so, so special,” he said. “To lift the trophy here in Madrid. In my country. It is always special to play and to be able to do a good result here and be a champion is so special. In front of my home crowd, my family, my friends. Everyone close to me. For me it is a special feeling that I will never forget.”
He added: “Once again it has been amazing. The crowd, my people, since the first day, were cheering my name. It is really amazing to have a lot of people behind you and supporting you and pushing you on.”
Alcaraz has now earned 21 consecutive wins at Spanish clay-court events but he had to work hard against the 33-year-old, who was the first lucky loser to reach an ATP Masters 1000 final since the series started in 1990 and was aiming to become just the fourth player to win his first tour-level trophy at an ATP Masters 1000.
Since a three-month injury layoff ruled him out of last year’s ATP Finals and the Australian Open this year, Alcaraz has compiled an incredible 28-2 (93%) record.

Madrid Open 2024 tennis: Australia’s Jordan Thompson wins maiden ATP Masters 1000 title
Thompson, now a six-time ATP Tour doubles champion, had teamed with Sebastian Korda for the first time. It was the duo’s maiden ATP Masters 1000 doubles title.
Australian tennis player Jordan Thompson , partnering USA’s Sebastian Korda, won the Madrid Open 2024 men’s doubles title at the Manolo Santana Stadium on Saturday.
In the final between two unseeded pairs at the clay court tournament, Thompson and Korda defeated Uruguay’s Ariel Behar and Czechia’s Adam Pavlasek 6-3, 7(9)-6(7) in 77 minutes to win their maiden ATP Masters 1000 tennis title in doubles.
Thompson is now a six-time ATP Tour doubles champion. The 30-year-old teamed up with Sebastian Korda for the first time with the duo clinching their maiden ATP Masters 1000 doubles title.
Thompson and Korda entered the main Madrid Open main draw by using a spot reserved for singles players as part of a trial for a new doubles format.
Korda and Thompson got a crucial break in the fourth game and went on to win the first set. The Australian-American duo was unable to find a break in the second set but saved a crucial set point when trailing 7-6 in the tie-break.
In all, Korda and Thompson saved six break points against Behar and Pavlasek in the title decider.
Thompson and Korda defeated top-seeded Indo-Aussie pair Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden in the first round before getting the better of John Peers and Andres Molteni in the second.
In the quarter-finals, Thompson and Korda accounted for Andrea Vavassori and Simone Bolelli and then staged a gritty comeback to beat Jamie Murray and Michael Venus, both former Grand Slam champions, 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 in the semi-finals.
This was Thompson’s fifth title on the ATP Tour this year. He won the ATP 250 doubles titles in Dallas, Los Cabos and Houston in addition to clinching the singles crown in Los Cabos.
In the men’s singles, Australia’s Alex de Minaur, seeded 10th, and Max Purcell failed to progress past the round of 64.
In the WTA events, Daria Saville was ousted in the round of 64 while Ellen Perez and her American partner Nicole Melichar-Martinez were knocked out in the first round of doubles.

ATP Madrid draw: Jannik Sinner lands nightmare draw as top seed while Rafael Nadal faces 16-year-old American
Jannik Sinner will face an early banana skin in his first ATP Masters 1000 event as a top seed as he could face Lorenzo Sonego in the second round of the Madrid Open while Rafael Nadal will face an American teenager in his opener.
With world No 1 Novak Djokovic opting to skip the Madrid Open, Sinner inherited the top seed and it is the first time that he achieved the feat at one of the Masters events.
But he could not have asked for a worse draw as he will face either his fellow Italian Sonego or a qualifier in the second round. He is projected to meet newly crowned Barcelona Open champion Casper Ruud or Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-final and either Daniil Medvedev or Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Ruud, who defeated Tsitsipas in the ATP 500 final on Sunday, will kick his campaign off against either Miomir Kecmanovic or Zhang Zhizhen with Dimitrov a likely fourth-round opponent.
The second quarter is spearheaded by third seed Medvedev and Tsitsipas, although it also features five-time champion Rafael Nadal.

Medvedev takes on either Christopher O’Connell or Matteo Arnaldi in the second round with 14th seed Ben Shelton a projected fourth-round opponent. If he gets to that then the form book suggests he will meet Tsitsipas.
However, the Greek – who faces a qualifier or Dusan Lajovic first up – could face tennis great Nadal in the fourth round.
The 22-time Grand Slam winner, who is not seeded as he has slipped down the rankings following a lengthy injury-enforced absence, will open his campaign against 16-year-old American Darwin Blanch.
The teenager – currently at No 1,028 in the ATP Rankings – has been handed a wildcard for the main draw.
The winner of the Nadal-Blanch match could face 10th seed Alex de Minaur in the second round, 20th seed Frances Tiafoe in the third round and Tsitsipas in the fourth round.

Carlos Alcaraz leads the bottom half of the draw and the defending champion will start his run against either Alexander Shevchenko or Arthur Rinderknech.
If he reaches the fourth round, then 13th seed Ugo Humbert or 23rd seed Jan-Lenard Struff – last year’s runner-up – could await while Andrey Rublev or Holger Rune is a projected quarter-finalist with one of Alexander Zverev, Hubert Hurkacz or Taylor Fritz likely to be a semi-final opponent.
Zverev will likely meet 15th seed Tommy Paul in the fourth round and Hurkacz or Fritz in the quarter-final.
