Linapacan – A Secret Jewel Half Way between El Nido and Coron

Dieser Artikel ist auch verfügbar auf: Deutsch

Twice a day from my little island I see the fast ferry on its three hours journey between the tourist hot spots of Coron and El Nido , its passengers gazing out at all the beautiful islands they pass by along the way.

But not all tourists want to stay on the main tourist routes and some like to get away from the hustle to explore the quiet and peaceful places. Why not take the slower ferries and explore some of those beautiful islands in between ?

Linapacan – Palawan’s untouched paradise

Guests arriving at Araw Beach in Linapacan, Palawan

About the Linapacan archipelago

Linapacan, about half way between these two, is surrounded by 52, mostly deserted, paradise beach islands. The area has amazing clear water and the snorkeling is amazing. There are the million years old Seniora caves, an old Spanish fortress, cliff diving straight into the ocean, and even jungle trails for avid hikers. There are also two shipwrecks, but the local diving services are not yet fully developed.

On the largest island, Linapacan , there are two small towns of about the same size, roughly 2,000 people each, who have not yet been swamped by tourists and are still very enthusiastic and welcoming. San Miguel is the main one where the slower ferries stop, each leg from El Nido or Coron about the same three hours journey.

For those with a larger budget, they can hire a private custom boat tour and stretch out their travels through this area over several days, to visit many of the islands and amazing snorkeling spots that even the slower ferries miss.

Along the way there are quaint little hotels you can stay at, or camp out on any of the many deserted beaches. Or combine the trip with others to share and reduce costs. A private boat for a four day tour would cost roughly 40,000 pesos total, which could bring the costs down to less than $20 per person per day for a larger group. Travel on your own schedule and where you want to go, unlike the set schedules of the more expensive operators. More details here .

Linapacan and its beautiful neighboring islands

During the 16th century the Spanish sent missionaries to the Philippines, including one to Linapacan. When they landed on shore, they saw footprints, traced them and eventually came to a hut where a beautiful woman resided. She replied that her name was Pacan and they later discovered that she was the wife of the island’s chieftain. They thus named the island Reina Pacan, in honour of the beautiful queen, but which much later was renamed to Linapacan.

As mentioned before, the island has two towns, Kaseledan and San Miguel . A road was built between those two but it is now apparently too overgrown by the jungle and dilapidated to use. But you can rent a motorbike or mountain bike from BRC hotel to venture around or see how far you get.

San Miguel is the main town where the ferries stop, but in both the number of tourists is very few and the people are very friendly and curious. If you walk south from San Miguel along the water, you can get to the beach where the Japanese-Filipino tourist guide lives with his family in a small hut. He is a remnant of WWII and is always very happy to meet tourists. Across the water is Ili Island , home of the area’s million-years-old Seniora caves, where the guide will be happy to take you. If visiting the caves, make sure not to rest your hands on any of the stalagmites, as the salt from it will eventually wear it flat and take away its fine detail.

On the way to this beach you will pass a long stretch with huts propped up out of the mud on stilts, with long wooden sidewalks between them. Quite a fun community to explore and the locals will be tickled pink by your presence.

In the other direction from San Miguel you can follow the road towards two other small communities, with their own beaches. San Miguel itself has about five hotels and a restaurant, more details you can find here .

Across from San Miguel is Patoyo Island . It is a nice island to explore with lots of jungle trails. On the side closest to San Miguel there is a very long stretch of beach with an equally long stretch of beautiful corals to snorkel through. A tent camp was recently built there, but the owner is not very friendly and charges money to use his beach. From there you can hike over the hill to the next beach, heading east, to Henkey’s grocery shop. Great place to stop for lunch and they would be happy to direct you to their local, natural “swimming pool”, where there is also great snorkeling.

Continuing along the trail over the mountain ridge, you will find a great viewpoint at the top of it before continuing down to the other side, where there is a string of three beaches with lovely rock formations in between. Eventually you will get to the end of the last beach, where my boatman lives and who would be happy to act as your island’s guide. Such as up the steep hidden trail above his house to the island’s highest mountain.

There is also great snorkeling just offshore from our camp on Dimancal Island . Tao Expeditions often stop here. From our camp you can take a trail to the other side of the island, where there is another small fishing village and a very long stretch of deserted beach, with its own cute, little cemetery. But before you get to the other side, half way there we carved a jungle trail to the top of the island’s largest mountain and from where you can get a fantastic view of the area.

Guests playing beach volleyball on Dimancal Island in Linapacan

Across from our camp is Mangligad Island , with a little family hut on each side and more long beaches to explore, with an easy path to cross to the other side. Possibly the best snorkeling in the immediate area can be found on the other side, but best to arrange all that with a local boat tour, as it is hard to find.

Continuing further to Inapupan island , the locals are now calling it Turtle Island , because there are many there. Two of them can be occasionally seen floating off our beach as well, where they sometimes lay their eggs.

In the opposite direction from our island of Dimancal there is a small island in the open ocean called Debogso . It is my favorite island for snorkeling and exploring, including a steep climb up a grassy ridge which will take you to a tree jutting horizontally out from the hill and a great place to rest.

There is a very small beach on the end of it which has a small cave you can walk through. Quite a romantic place to camp on overnight. From the beach along the west side of the island, the snorkeling is very interesting because of the rock formations. It feels like you are a bird flying. Around the corner there are two inlets leading into the island, but the second one continues through a cave tunnel which will take you back to an opening at the beach. But be careful, because the rocks are jagged if the waves are too strong. Since the island is out in the open ocean, it can only be gotten to if the waves are calm enough.

How I found this place

Many of my guests ask me how I found this remote little paradise, so here it goes.

Born in Prague, growing up in Canada, I eventually found myself in South East Asia and spent more than two years on the beautiful island of Koh Phangan in Thailand. But that not quite serving my cup of tea, I decided to hit the road on a motorbike and make my way across Asia as part of my life mission to visit a hundred countries before I die. Fortunately, my online job allowed this flexibility.

My 50th birthday was approaching, one which for a decade I planned to make a super party. Some friends suggested El Nido , I fell in love with pictures I found on the internet, but decided on a remote resort east of the town and settled for two months in the lovely archeological village of Sibaltan . It is here that I first thought of starting an island hopping service.

Through ebay I bought three portable, foldable, plastic solar panels handmade by a forest ranger in the U.S. and set out on a journey to hop my way from island to island. Most did not have any electricity, which I needed for my online income, but I was assured that there was a mobile signal for internet almost everywhere. My plan was to collect a database of homestays and fishermen to string together different routes and packages.

First destination, the lovely island of Iloc , in Pical. I stayed at the village captain’s hotel, always buzzing with activity, such as collecting the island’s daily fish catch or peeling cashews to send off to Manila. I asked about a guide to take me to the small community on the other side of the island, but he said it was so small it wasn’t worth it, but offered to take me to San Miguel , since he goes there every Monday to register his island’s fish earnings.

Another beach on Iloc Island in Pical, Palawan

For two months I stayed in this town, using it as a base to explore the 52 islands in the Linapacan area. Eventually I learned that the owner of the hotel I was staying at owned some property on a nearby island. I worked out a deal with him and henceforth launched my long held dream, on Patoyo Island .

Unfortunately, his property was located on the other side of the island from the mobile signal tower and I had to catch 2G internet from a tower half way to Coron. I got into a routine of climbing over volcanic rock every day with my small motorcycle battery and laptop to get a few hours of high-speed internet, but that and other problems, such as the raging wind which ripped apart all my tents once the trade winds changed, forced me to consider abandoning this project.

Karel's working station on Patoyo Island in Linapacan

Fortunately, the owner also had a property on another island, where I am now. Often when new guests disembark from their little hired boat with a look of amazement on their face, I stretch out my arms and say, “Welcome, to the end of the world”. Or when emailing instructions how to get here, sometimes I’ll comment, “Hey, if you want to get to Shangri-La, sometimes you have to climb a few mountains”.

It really is Shangri-La out here and not the easiest place to get to, more suited for longer stays. But guests do make the effort, made easier by the boat tours I now organise between El Nido and Coron. It has become a rather successful business and my primary source of income for half of the year.

Come drop by and say hello!

Hi Karel. We would love to drop by! I chanced upon your website while doing research for our coming boat trip. We are travelling from Boracay and heading to Maosonon via Manamoc. We were planning to make a stop in Ginto as a friend manages that. I’m hoping to get tips on the 8 best islands around Linapacan to visit. We would also prefer islands with camping facilities or huts. We are equipped to sleep on board but prefer to get a proper bed here and there. We are a group of Italians and Filipinos, 2 of them accomllished chefs. We have been doing this boat trips on our own for 8 years now and have covered El Nido, Busanga, Apo Reef, Western Mindoro, Romblon, Western Visayas, Bohol, Cebu and Leyte. We would certainly love to meet you and swap stories. Hoping to hear from you. Cheers. Paul

LINAPACAN ISLAND, PALAWAN: IMPORTANT TRAVEL TIPS

linapacan island tour

2019 • 02 • 21

The lakes, lagoons, beaches, and underwater ecosystem of Coron and El Nido catapulted them atop must-visit lists of both local and foreign tourists alike. However, there are still plenty of destinations in the province of Palawan that are worth discovering and exploring, one of which is Linapacan Island. It has unspoiled attractions and doesn’t have the same developments as the two mentioned, which means that it has the makings of a perfect getaway.

WHAT'S IN THIS GUIDE?

How to Get There

Nearest Airport: Francisco B. Reyes Airport, also known as Busuanga Airport (Palawan)

The closest airport to Linapacan is in Coron; there are regular flights from Manila to Busuanga.

  • There are overnight ferries from Manila to Coron; 2Go travels this route twice per week, Tuesdays and Fridays.
  • From Coron, there are boats that take visitors to Linapacan. The price may vary but it will approximately cost you P1,000 to get to Linapacan and then another P1,000 (per boat) to get to where you want to go locally. You also have the option to rent an entire boat from Coron to take you there, which can cost around P8,000 or more, depending on the size of the boat and group.

An alternative is to rent a boat from San Fernando, El Nido to get to some of the islands of Linapacan. Again, the price of the boat varies based on the size of the group and the chosen destinations.

Entrance Fee and Other Charges

  • Entrance Fee: It depends on where you choose to go and stay on the island. Some areas have no entrance fee.
  • Camping Fee: It depends on the resort. Some of them allow camping, some don’t.
  • Cottage Rental Fee: Rates vary from one resort to another.

Don’t Miss

  • If you’re coming from El Nido, visit the beautiful islands of Magransing and Mausonoan.
  • From Coron, go snorkeling in the marine reserve near San Miguel.
  • Other places to include in your itinerary are the centuries-old Spanish fort and the islands of Ariara, Patoyo, Eli, and Cagbatan just to name a few.

Don’t Forget

  • Bring cash as there are no ATMs in Linapacan’s towns; bring enough to pay for the boat and incidentals such as food and drinks.
  • If you plan to spend the night in San Miguel, charge your gadgets and/or bring battery packs as electricity isn’t 24 hours.

If You Have More Time and Budget

  • If you haven’t explored Coron yet outside of the usual tours, spend an extra day or two exploring Culion, the Calauit Safari, and Black Island.

Where to Stay

Linapacan Island is a municipal island located in the province of Palawan. Here are some of the top resorts in Palawan according to Agoda users, in no particular order.

PALAWAN| Linapacan Island Hopping ~ One of the Clearest Waters in the World

Linapacan Island Hopping Tour

Linapacan was our second choice for our Palawan getaway. We originally planned on going to Balabac , but due to weather constraints and the threat of being eaten by crocodiles, we whole-heartedly settled for the latter. And can we be so choosy? Linapacan has been tagged as having one of the clearest waters in the world .

Located between El Nido and Coron , Linapacan is actually a municipality in Palawan. It is a menagerie of islands, some of which used to belong to Coron. The town’s jump off is about an hour away from El Nido, and I’m quite puzzled as to why the boom in the region’s tourism hasn’t reached it yet.

We travelled to Linapacan from the Northern Hope Inn in El Nido early the next morning—like four in the morning early. A quick stop at a carinderia hawking freshly cooked dishes, about an hour of snooze time inside the jeep, and we arrived at our jump off in Barangay Sibaltan for our Linapacan island hopping adventure.

Our boat wasn’t ready yet when we arrived, giving us time wander along the shoreline fronting a few resorts in the area. Sibaltan is still part of El Nido—its eastern coast, to be exact—and it’s totally wilder and more untamed than its western counterpart.

Northern Hope Tours organized our Linapacan island hopping . They really don’t offer this tour package yet when we went to El Nido, but Ate Neriza, the tour agency owner, was kind enough to make it happen for us. Should you wish to avail of their tours, you may contact them using the details on the footer of this article.

MAOSONON ISLAND

ENTRANCE FEE: ₱100.00 | GPS COORDINATES MAP: 11.240888, 119.681486

Our first stop took about an hour to reach. The weather was fine, but still, we endured being splashed by saltwater en route to Maosonon Island. It was all worth it though. We were already snapping away with our cameras as our outrigger boat slowly approached the island. Maosonon is a private island, so we were asked to pay a fee upon alighting from our boat. Again, it was worth it—making me wonder this is actually a private island for rent . The sand was blinding white and the water, the perfect turquoise. There were hardly any waves and I was torn between dumping my cameras on the shore and swimming across the blue green waters, and taking pictures. Triangular in shape, it’s one of the southernmost islands in Linapacan. Two of its sides has beaches, the south side finer than its northern counterpart. Both beaches meet on its southwestern tip, pointing to a small islet that can be accessed by foot during low tide. We were told that beach-goers can actually camp here for the night. And we would’ve done so if not for our short stay. Maosonon Island was definitely a good preview of what’s in store for us in Linapacan!

WEST MAOSONON REEF

ENTRANCE FEE: NONE | GPS COORDINATES MAP: 11.2350287, 119.6809432,2981

A hundred meters or so from Maosonon Island, our boat stopped in the middle of the sea, a ladder was deployed down the water and we were asked to jump. And jump we did. We were more than ready to go snorkeling in Linapacan! With my full-face mask on, I dove down the warm waters of Linapacan and found a thriving underwater garden. Clarity wasn’t a hundred percent on the mark, but it was enough for us to appreciate West Maosonon Reef’s huge and colorful corals. The snorkeling spot was quite deep, about fifteen to twenty feet by my estimate, and the current was a bit strong. Most of my friends went immediately back up after a few minutes, unable to swim far due to the current. Good thing I brought my fins with me—although it was still hard to maneuver even with it on.

CAGDANAO ISLAND

ENTRANCE FEE: NONE | GPS COORDINATES MAP: 11.4428617, 119.7106852,2979

An hour and half later and we were again docking on another island, this time at Cagdanao Island. Throughout the duration of our trip, we met only two boats carrying tourists aboard, foreigners taking the slow overnight boat trip from El Nido to Coron—Linapacan is truly not yet on the tourist radar. We didn’t even see any kayaks around! Cagdanao is a heart-shaped island off the western side of the Linapacan mainland. We can actually see the mainland from where we were. And as with Maosonon Island, it was heartbreakingly beautiful. The sand was impeccably white and the water was luminously clear. Our guides started cooking lunch while we headed to the waters to check if it holds any surprises. And we were not disappointed, just a few meters from the shore, clusters of corals replete with small fishes started to break into view. The depth was about four to six feet, definitely a good snorkeling area for beginners. The seabed drops to an unimaginable depth as I went further out. Not a fan of swimming without seeing the seabed, I went back to the safety of the shore. And just right on time, our lunch was ready. An island meal at Palawan is, of course, not complete with the signature boatmen presentation complete with carved LINAPACAN letters on the cucumber. It was a feast of grilled squid, fish, ginormous crabs, grilled pork liempo , eggplant ensalada , and a platter of fruits.

LACALACA ISLAND

ENTRANCE FEE: ??? | GPS COORDINATES MAP: 11.4368147, 19.6990292,2979

Our boat passed by Lacalaca Island, a small islet about three hundred meters away from Cagdanao before we headed towards our final destination. We were actually given a choice by our guides if we wanted to dock, but since everyone was too full from lunch and the heat was unbearable, most of my companions begged off—to my utter disappointment. I wanna go down!

A few minutes into the sea and we again stopped just right before Ginto Island. It was snorkeling time once more! Everyone just wanted to lay down and nap by this time, but not me! I immediately jumped into the water and found the best snorkeling site in our Linapacan island hopping tour! The reef wasn’t that deep, there was no current, and clarity was perfect! Ginto Reef wowed us with a profusion of corals and fishes, literally within the reach of our hands. The whole seabed was exploding with colors! Soon, everyone was swimming along the reef, their afternoon siesta forgotten. How can you even think of missing this for a nap! Linapacan’s reputation as having one of the clearest waters in the world is definitely on point!

Information about Linapacan Island

Linapacan island.

Linapacan Island in Coron

Linapacan Island is one of the island groups in Palawan that is yet to be discovered by travelers. Situated almost between Coron and El Nido and far from urban life, Linapacan has never undergone any major developments unlike the two tourist destinations mentioned.

Linacapan is located south of the Calamian Group of Islands and has been added to the list of "35 Clearest Waters in the World to Swim in Before You Die" by CartagenaInfo in 2013, together with the famous Maldives Island. Not more than 20,000 people inhabit the island, making Linapacan serene and unspoiled.

History and Geology

Dating back to the 16th century when Spanish missionaries went to the Philippines, some of them were sent to Linacapan. Upon their arrival, they noticed the footprints on the shore and followed the traces to a hut where a woman lives. They learned that she was the wife of the chieftain of the island and that her name was Pacan. The missionaries then decided to dub the island as Reina Pacan which eventually led to Linacapan. Linacapan is surrounded by more than fifty other islets, most of them are uninhabited and boast of equally stunning beaches. These numerous attractions off the coast of Linapacan Island are Patoyo Island, Ariara Island, Inapupan Island, Cagbatan Island, and Eli & Mephdet Islands, to name a few.

Sights and Activities

Palawan's iconic landmarks are white beaches, lagoons, lakes, sandbars, and caves. Linapacan Island is one of its kind to have most of these landmarks: the white-sand beach, cave, and sandbar. The island’s stretch of pristine white beach is a match for Boracay's.

Other than the usual sun basking and walking on the coastline, Linacapan offers a full day of sightseeing as it is home to iconic attractions. One of its tourist spots is a marine sanctuary situated near San Miguel, the main town of Linapacan. The municipality is rich in marine life, so most tourists go to the town for snorkeling.

There is also an 18th-century Spanish fort at Caseledan in Linacapan that visitors can visit. On top of that, there are island hopping packages that guests can avail in Linacapan. Hotels are available on the island for those wanting to stay for the night.
