This baking class/tour was fantastic!!! My husband and boys absolutely loved it! We made baguettes, croissants and madeleines. We got to eat and take home all the goodies. Mourad, the gentleman that gave the tour was so kind and wonderful with our boys! We learned so much about French baking and boulangeries. This was a great morning!

My family of four took this wonderful tour with Igor as the guide in June 2023. We were joined by a separate family of 3. After the delicious breakfast of pastries and hot chocolate in the shop (included with the price), we began the tour of the actual working bakery. Igor kept every person engaged (all adults and our 14 year old, 11 year old) with hands-on making of many products (baguettes, braided loaves, croissants, financiers, bolle, etc.) which we were able to take home at the end. I highly recommend this tour: we learned about the inner workings and saw how a real Parisian bakery operates, and made a variety of items ourselves, all in 2 hours. Igor spoke perfect English and was very friendly/entertaining. Since this a family-owned small working bakery, you will walk in narrow halls/stairwells to get to the different prep areas. At the end, Igor told us which local shops sell cheese/butter so we had a delightful picnic in front of the Eiffel Tower with a variety of bread we had freshly baked ourselves that day!

Fabulous French baguettes Igor was a fantastic tour guide who had lots of interesting info about the bakery. The bread made was amazing. Viator review: Paris French Bakery Behind the Scenes Experience Feb 21, 2023

Great Experience in Paris with Mourad at Miss Manon Bakery The kids wanted to experience Paris by baking baguettes and other French pastries. This was easy to book and easy to find. We arrived 10 minutes late because of the traffic and were worried. But we were greeted with coffees, freshly baked croissants as we waited for the rest of the group. Mourad was the best guide and made the experience educational and fun! He taught us how to make financiers, roll croissants and make baguettes all from scratch. Would highly recommend this experience with Mourad at Miss Manon Bakery! Hannah Tripadvisor review: Paris French Bakery Behind the Scenes Experience: Feb 21, 2023

Great time! My daughter (24) and I had a great time! Mourad was very patient and explained everything well. We thoroughly enjoyed this experience. Glad we did it. Very well run hands on baking session suitable for all ages includes pastry breakfast and take home baking I would recommend this tour for adults as well as families with children. We went with children aged 9 and 5. The session started with hot drinks and pastries. It was very hands on with the kids making baguettes, croissants and little friand like cakes. We go to to take home everything that we made except the croissants because they could not be cooked in time. The kids had a great time and the bakers were very accomodating to having their work interrupted by us. It was very informative to see a commercial kitchen in action. Excellent choice for families We loved this activity! They welcome you with a drink, a snack, and a great attitude! The energy of the tour guide was amazing, he answered all questions and was incredibly kind and patient with everyone. We really enjoyed the tour, the baking, and in general the excellent vibe and mood of this activity. Maria_B Jan 13, 2023 Viator review: Paris French Bakery Behind the Scenes Experience

Fun for kids, hands on -come hungry! What fun! The children had a great time getting their hands into the dough and seeing the mechanics of how we get all those lovely French pastries and breads! Anna_H Jan 5, 2023 Viator review: Paris French Bakery Behind the Scenes Experience

The tour was good fun and hands on yet be aware it is only a little over an hour in the bakery.

Reviewed on: 9-Mar-2019 Booking: GYG66249756 Comment: Fast paced, information dense, learned a lot in a short amount of time. My 11 year old was engaged and busy. In under 2 hours she participated in baking pan chocolat, muffins, baguette, bolle, and croissant. No promises that everyone will be able to do the same, because every day is different.

Thank you so much for this wonderful activity we shared with my family, it was the highlight of our trip, my kids loved it. Our guide Igor was very informative and funny.

Thank you! Melissa

Traveler Reviews

Informative. The guide was friendly and showed us many aspects of the bakery but it is not an interactive tour

We enjoyed learning about the bakeries and especially the rules regarding baguettes. Wish we could have worked with some dough and produced our own baguettes but our guide was informative and interesting and we did get bread and croissants. Just a nice alternative to a museums tour.

Eating hot bread out of the oven was amazing. We loved learning how to shape the dough and the ingredients we would need to try to make our own. Great experience!

An excellent view of a working french bakery. From yeast to flour to rising dough- 24 hours for a proper baguette. Then watching how the dough is rolled and cooked. Then a tour downstairs where the patisseries are made along with specialist items. And all sparkingly presented by a knowledgeable lady who filled in many details. And the staff were so welcoming. Despite a 3am start. An excellent time and a really good tour- well worth it.

We did a behind the scenes bakery visit. It was a very small bakery, you could see a bit of how they do the baguette and very little about patisserie. You can see only what they are doing at the moment, so when we were there there was not much to see. They were not doing croissants only some little puffs. They gave us to taste a piece of baguette and a small piece of cake.To take with us they gave us a cold baguette and a cold croissant, nothing just from the oven. The tour was less than 45 mins. The guide was nice though. Overall, too expensive for the experience, I will not reccomend it.

We do bake bread in our home and aspire to bake croissants. This tour was very informative. We saw the bakers applying various techniques. We learned a lot about the life of a baker. The tour was at a highly rated bakery and the tour guide also was a trained baker. What we saw was artisans doing what they love to do. We also were given baguettes and croissants to enjoy in our apartment.

Do not take this tour expecting you be able to make bakery items. This is more of how the store makes things from scratch. The kitchen was very compact and there were only four people in our group; us, the tour guides and the staff had to figure out how to maneuver around each other. Learned a few things about how bread is cooked but would have loved a more in-depth, hands on experience. The gratis bread and croissant gift we good. Our guides were nice. We left a bit disappointed. Make sure to wear clothes you can get flour on and non-skid shoes: floor was VERY slippery!

Our tour guide was prompt and very friendly. He answered lots of our questions and interpreted any answers from the bakers for us. The boulangerie staff was very friendly too and tried to explain their processes and answer our questions with the help of the tour guide. The bread baker let us make the release cuts in our own baguettes that we were given to take home. We were also given a croissant and a pastry sample.

11 of the Best Boulangeries in Paris

There are thousands of boulangeries in Paris selling some incredible baked goods – but which are the best ? Read on to discover the best boulangeries in the city!

The French boulangerie ( bakery in English ) is emblematic of the food culture of the country. The incredible smells are alluring and make you go in and buy a warm baguette straight out of the oven or a delicious patisserie. I have many memories from our vacations in France when I was young of visiting boulangeries and being greeted by a chirpy “ bonjour !” as soon as we entered. We would leave with some incredible viennoiseries for breakfast and a baguette tradition for lunch. It’s something I still really appreciate about living here and visit a boulangerie numerous times per week.

There are plenty of amazing boulangeries across Paris. In fact most Parisians are under 5 minutes from one at any given point in the city! But you’re probably wondering where are the best boulangeries in the city?

Tips on choosing a good boulangerie

In a rush and don’t have time in your itinerary to go to one of our favourite bakeries? We’ve got a few tips to ensure you get to a good boulangerie! The first tip is to look for queues outside of the bakery. If there’s a queue it means it’s popular with the locals and Parisians do not like queuing – so you if you see people waiting you’ll know it’ll be good. Lots of customers also means that there will be a high turnover of freshly baked goods which means no stale bread! Boulangeries will always bake to demand and trust me, if you’re looking for a good baguette or croissant, the fresher the better (even after a few hours the best croissant will go stale).

How many bakeries are there in Paris?

There are an estimated 5,500 boulangeries in the Paris region in 2023 with that number up an incredible 20% compared to 2018. The majority of boulangeries in Paris are independently owned with only a few chains (or franchises) such as Paul and Brioche Dorée.

What is the famous bakery street in Paris?

The famous bakery street in Paris is generally regarded to be rue du Bac located in the 7th arrondissement on the left bank. It’s known for it’s a high concentration of patisserie and bakery shops. You can discover more in our Best Patisserie Shops in Paris guide.

What is the most famous bakery in Paris?

Probably the most famous bakery in Paris is Stohrer . They’re also the oldest bakery in Paris with their first store opening in 1730. They’ve currently got bakeries dotted across the city including one on the famous rue Montorgueil . It’s definitely worth a visit to pick up some incredible bread, pastries and cakes. They have larger tartes for 6 people or smaller versions for 1 or 2 people from around €5. The quality is superb and well worth a small wait.

Our Favourite Boulangeries in Paris

If you’re looking for some boulangeries or bakeris in Paris to check out to pick up a baguette, pain au chocolat or an éclair then read on. Our list contains our favourite authentic boulangeries in no particular order.

French Bastards

The hilariously named boulangerie was started by 3 Parisians who wanted to reinvent the traditional Parisian boulangerie. Their approach is all about high quality, traceable ingredients and a focus on aesthetic yet ultra indulgent products. Their stores are uber cool and their bread and patisseries are extremely well made. You’ll pay a few more cents that boulangeries but it’s well worth the cost.

Maison Thevenin

Maison Thevenin was my local boulangerie in the 6th arrondissement for 3 years and it’s in this list for good reason. Their baguettes are awesome (get their tradition ) – crunchy exterior yet a soft interior with a perfect density. Their patisseries are superb and I always got their tarte aux fraises (strawberry tart) which had great consistency and flavour.

6 Rue de Buci, 75006

Le Boulanger de la Tour

The Boulanger de la Tour is the boulangerie of the famous 1 Michelin Starred Tour d’Argent . As you would imagine the quality of their bread and patisseries is lives up to the name of its big sister restaurant. You’ll often see queues snaking out of the entrance and for good reason. Their baguettes and pain de campagne (a traditional French loaf) are epic and well worth the detour if you’re around the 5th arrondissement.

2 Rue du Cardinal Lemoine, 75005

Boulangerie Gana

Boulangerie Gana is a family run group of boulangeries that first started in 1937. They’ve currently got 11 locations in central Paris and they’re extremely popular. They may have expanded rapidly but you’ll still find family members working in their boulangeries daily. Their Flute Gana is their signature baguette and is made from their own flour which is sourced from artisan suppliers.

Fermentation Generale

Fermentation Generale is a small independent boulangerie which specialises in sourdough and other fermented products. They’re extremely popular with the trendy local crowd of the 11th arrondissement. It’s not just sourdough bread that they offer – they’re passionate about fermentation and you can get a variety of seasonal, fermented products. Kimchi, fermented honey – you’ll find it all. They’ve also got some superb natural wine on offer too.

37 Rue de la Folie Méricourt, 75011

Boulangerie Terroirs d’Avenir

The boulangerie of the Terroirs d’Avenir group is a fantastic bakery to visit if you’re near the bustling rue Montorgueil in the city centre. The group was started by two Parisians who are passionate about local, seasonal produce. Their first boulangerie opened in 2015 and they specialise in long fermentation bread (sourdough) using old fashioned techniques. They also have plenty of modern pastries on offer and some great brioche.

3 Rue du Nil, 75002

Boulangerie Terroirs d’Avenir paris

Utope is a superb neighbourhood bakery located on the up and coming Rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud in the capital’s 11th arrondissement. Their bread and patisseries are an absolute work of art – have a look on their Instagram page and judge for yourself. Croissant or Pain au Chocolat, you’ll love the crunchy exterior yet fluffy light interior. I’d also definitely recommend you try one of their ever changing special pastries – their Paris-Brest is awesome .

20 Rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud, 75011

Boulangerie MieMie

Yet another awesome boulangerie in the 11th arrondissement, MieMie is definitely one to visit if you’re in the area. Its traditional facade gives way to a modern, hip interior which is very much of the district. Their products are super high quality and made with a lot of passion. Ingredients are all local and including the fruit that they source from a nearby independent greengrocer that only get their produce from small, local farms. They don’t have the biggest selection but boy, what they do have is great. During my last visit I had an awesome jambon beurre sandwich with comté.

25 Rue Sedaine, 75011

boulangerie miemie paris

Boulangerie Milligramme

Located just above the beautiful Parc des Buttes-Chaumont in the out-of-the-way district in the 20th lies Boulangerie Milligramme. A small, local boulangerie, it’s extremely popular with local residents and if you’re ever in the area, it’s worth a visit. They only use ancient – or heritage – species of flour for their bread and of course stock a lot of amazing sourdough bread. If you’re coming for a lunch time sandwich then you’ll be in luck as they sell some awesome boujee American style fried chicken burgers.

3-5 Rue du Plateau, 75019

La Pâtisserie Cyril Lignac – Paul Bert

Started by acclaimed French Chef Cyril Lignac, his bakery (one of many in the capital) in the 11th district is located on the famous rue Paul Bert. One of the biggest bakeries in this list, they offer an incredible selection of bread, pastries and some incredible patisserie. Featured in our Best Croissant in Paris guide, they do some awesome breakfast goods so be sure to get a croissant or two if you stop by!

24 Rue Paul Bert, 75011

Carré Pain de Mie

The final boulangerie on this list is a bakery-cum-restaurant which specialises in Japanese style white milk bread. You can buy their Pain Carré either whole or you can get a half. It’s absolutely perfect if you want to make a tonkatsu sandwich or just have ultra soft, pillowy white sandwich bread. They also have a restaurant section where you can choose from a variety of different sandos made with their own super fresh bread.

A truly incredible spot! I love palmiers and this was the best one I've ever had in my life. I bought 2. We will be back! Highly recommend walking over after visiting notre dame.

Palmier

This bakery was a few blocks away from the apartment I was staying in so we stopped by almost every morning. Their regular croissants are excellent. I wasn't a huge fan of their almond croissant which was way too dense and sweet for me, but if you like that you won't be disappointed. Their baguettes are also excellent and they also make mini baguettes. Beautiful pastries are displayed in the window, everything looked delicious. They also serve up a strong shot of espresso. Recommended if you are in the area.

I was passing by this bakery and went in to take a look. I noticed mini viennoiseries, and I got a mini pain au chocolat because it was so cute. Maybe it's because it was mini, but it wasn't particularly good. It was also pretty expensive at 0.60 euros for 2 bites. I would not recommend getting their mini pastries, but maybe their larger ones are better.

This is a great bakery. Extra flakey croissants positively LOADED with butter. The pain au chocolat have the perfect amount of chocolate. And of course, there's the pièce de resistance, the palmier. Come a little later in the morning or early afternoon to have the best palmier of your life. The buttery, sugary, pastry dough is baked up to perfection, evenly cooked all the way through (a rarity for a pastry with such a ridiculous shape). In addition to the breads, they sell foie from Tour d'Argent, and jams as well. Service is...French. Buy your goods and get out. It's right across the street from the Seine, a perfect place to enjoy your treats.

Photo of Lisa D.

Dana of Portland captures my sentiments exactly. Go in the morning when the chocolate in the croissants is still warm. You seriously will not mind being covered with little greasy spots from where all the flaky crumbs hit your clothes.

This places has amazing bread and pastries. If you're looking for some tasty treats come here. Can't go wrong with any of their baked goods.

I found this Bakery when looking for a good one around Notre Dame. Ist was absolutely worth the 500 metres Walk. We tried two Tartelettes and the Baguette and a Croissant as well. Everything tasted very good and few bakeries we tried were as good as this one.

A "Tartelette aux Citron" and a "L'eclair choclat". Both very delicious.

Simply sensational, I went back twice in three days because words cannot describe how amazing the croissants were. Please try lots of things, but the almond croissants were worth every bite.

Best palmier in Paris! Very friendly too! We tried a dozen different bakeries and this one took the cake. Merci!

Le Boulanger de La Tour

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

We tried the financier, the palmier and the citrus fruits tarte. I am not a fan of palmiers or citrus fruits tartes, but the palmier and the citrus fruits tarte from Le Boulanger de la Tour were to die for.

I like to peer through the windows at the left of this little shop and watch the various baked goods being made. The process always captures my attention, no matter how many times I've passed by. I find the lemon tarts and baguettes made at... this bakery to be quite good but have never tried anything else here. I generally limit my food purchases to places near where I am staying and have never resided in this part of the 5th arrondissement, where Le Boulanger de La Tour is located. It stands across the street from the famous restaurant, "Tour d'Argent," which has been around since 1582 and is responsible for the fairly new bakery's operation. The Seine is also across a nearby street and the perfect place to go to enjoy a treat from the bakery. I would not put Le Boulanger de La Tour on my top 5 list for Paris bakeries so cannot recommend going out of one's way to come here. But I think it would be worth a stop when in the neighborhood. The bakery is open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and weekends from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. More

This was along the way to the first destination of my day and so I stopped inside and grabbed a croissant. It was good - flaky and buttery which is all that one wants from a pastry.

While staying on Ile St Louis, we walked across Pont de la Tournelle to this boulangerie for perfect croissants and great coffee. We were able to communicate in English.

I stopped in when I realized it was owned by the Michelin starred restaurant a cross the street and man am I happy I did! This was my first morning stop everyday for the rest of my stay in the city and now I'm back... in America and can't eat anything made from flour because I'm absolutely spoiled. Don't worry about what you get, just get in there and try something! More

During this particular stay in Paris we wanted to finally taste the famous Fauchon eclair - we were sadly disappointed. We had already been to Le Boulanger de la Tour in our neighbourhood the previous day and were wowed by their eclair chocolat. We began... to wonder if Fauchon would be as good and were shocked to find that they are not even in the same class. Le Boulanger de la Tour are pastry royalty and far exceed the efforts of Fauchon. So we went back to Le Boulanger for more. Their Gateau Opera was also outstanding. Bravo! I'll miss you but we'll be back! More

Have only visited for morning pastries and coffee. Wonderful - buttery - flavorful - fattening pastries. If you around I'ile Saint Louis do give La Tour a try. The restaurant menu looked enticing.

Baba Rum is a local French delicacy that is French pound cake that is doused in rum and served on a custard, topped with chantilly cream. Oftentimes other locations will cheap out on ingredients but this location is true to the recipe. Delectable and totally... unforgettable. Warning: you might get a buzz from the rum. More

We stop by this bakery frequently for bread and desserts. There are a wide variety of breads that are all brilliant. They are also open daily and provide the bread for Tour d'Argent and their affiliated Rotisserie--which are also brilliant. Highest recommendation!!

This bakery was a few blocks away from the apartment I was staying in so we stopped by almost every morning. Their regular croissants are excellent. I wasn't a huge fan of their almond croissant which was way too dense and sweet for me, but... if you like that you won't be disappointed. Their baguettes are also excellent and they also make mini baguettes. Beautiful pastries are displayed in the window, everything looked delicious. They also serve up a strong shot of espresso. Recommended if you are in the area. More

Worse experience in Paris. Despite very high prices and a famous name. We placed a large order (several pies and cakes!) and all I can say is… Never again

Impeccable products, that is if you can eat them .... Exception made of the big boss Andre T and the directeur adjoint whose name I forgot, the team are liars, aggressive especially with pregnant women and total frauds who failed to deliver our tarts, sold... them after, invented stories and excuses and refused to reimburse us any money or even to just say sorry, which might have been enough. They have no respect nor interest in their customers and have nothing in common with their fantastic neighbour "la Tour d Argent". Please avoid this scam, Paris is full of delicious bakeries. More

So glad we stumbled upon this patisserie because it was the best almond croissant I have ever had!! Would highly recommend coming here if you’re around the area! Would have loved to have the opportunity to try their other stuff!

It looks like a nice bakery and it has a good pedigree if it is affiliated with the restaurant of the same name. It is a small store with a good variety of pastries. I tried their Quiche Lorraine and a Demi-bagette, Neither as good... as I have gotten elsewhere. More
