The Ultimate Guide to Diving in Thailand: 24 Best Sites, Weather, Species & Safety

Thailand is home to some of the most beautiful and diverse natural sights, like the beaches and islands you'll find in the Kingdom’s sunny south.

A quick Google image search of Thailand’s Andaman Sea will leave you breathless at the clarity of the crystal blue sea, the beautiful sandy beaches and the variety of wildlife that live in Thailand’s warm, clear waters.

So it's no surprise that for dive enthusiasts, Thailand is considered one of the holy grails for underwater adventures. Moreover, it's a great place for beginners to learn and intermediate divers to advance.

With this in mind, I’ve compiled the best of the best in terms of diving sites, times of year to dive, the cool creatures you’ll see, and importantly, risk assessment and safety.

The Best Time of Year to Go Diving in Thailand

Here’s one factor that’ll have you beaming from cheek to cheek: Thailand’s diving season runs all year round, so there are no times that you should avoid the warm Thai waters, though there are certainly times of the year that will yield the most beautiful discoveries.

Weather in Thailand is pretty invariably warm and humid, with the exception of the country’s northernmost cities. Temperatures in the South range from 30-35 degrees C (85-95 degrees F).

You’ll get more humidity and rain if you’re visiting from May to September/October, which is the traditional rainy season, and you’ll notice that the country gets drier and less humid from November to March/April.

The months of November through April are generally considered to be some of the best in terms of dive visibility, water temperature and in the amount of wildlife you’ll see.

If you’re interested in the gentle giants that are whale sharks, you’ll want to visit anywhere from February to May. Experiencing the surreal grace of the manta rays that call the Andaman Sea ‘home’ can be experienced year round.

November to April is also when many liveaboards (for the dive obsessed) make their pilgrimages to the Similan Islands, so if you’re interested in an immersive dive experience, consider going at this time.

On the West Coast of Thailand, which is becoming more and more popular with tourists, the months from May to October can be considered the off season- it’s Thailand’s rainy period.

Visibility and ocean calmness may suffer during this time, so if you’re planning a getaway for these months, consider relocating your diving plans to the Gulf of Thailand, which will still boast excellent sights during these months (considered its very own ‘high season’).

Image credit: Ilse Reijs & Jan Noud Hutten, Red Lionfish, Koh Lanta

For those who prefer warmer water temperatures, visiting from February to May is generally ideal, and for those who prefer cooler temps, visiting from June to October will be more preferable.

It is important to note, though, that water temperatures rarely fluctuate more than 5 degrees- it could be about 31 degrees C in the warmer months and 26 degrees C in the cooler ones- all in all, the water will be pleasant and generally warm.

Visibility in diving locations may vary, but there is a general consensus that 30 metres (or 100 feet) is standard in diving locations, which is excellent. Algal blooms may occasionally affect visibility, but will also bring in some pretty big creatures!

Wildlife in Thailand’s waters is varied and beautiful- you’ll see a variety of Indo-Pacific reef fish and other reef dwellers, as well as puffer fish, morays, trigger fish and Moorish idols. You may also see some bigger ocean creatures, like leopard sharks and even whale sharks, if you visit at the right time!

The Best Dive Sites in Thailand

Recommended Training & Safety

Those looking to dive into Thailand’s depths should do so through a dive agency like Dive The World , who is partnered with PADI: the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, and DAN (Divers Alert Network).

It isn't a good idea to dive with random companies unless you know they have the official PADI & DAN certification in place, which ultimately equates to keeping you safe.

Be aware that before you dive, you’ll generally have to complete a certification course that will prepare you for any challenges you might face underwater. Additionally, PADI certification has different levels of skill, allowing some divers to complete more advanced dives; dives of greater depths, longer dive times or locations with more intense currents.

As with any activity, diving includes risks: malfunctioning equipment, pulmonary embolism (lung pressure and popping from rapid ascents), oxygen toxicity (from diving too deep), nitrogen narcosis (over absorption of nitrogen from a deep dive) and the (admittedly small) risk of attack from marine life.

So if  you have any pre-existing health conditions, be sure to mention them to your dive instructor before certification begins.

Don't worry too much though. Take your experience in stride. If you dive with a reputable company and follow all instructor directions, you'll be sure to have an underwater experience in Thailand that’s out of this world.

Thailand liveaboard destinations.

Phuket is arguably the most popular island destination in the world. It is well known for its beaches and larger than life parties with its people welcoming tourists from all over the world. Being situated in the Andaman Sea, Phuket serves as a hub for tourists to enter Thailand and visit the nearby famous Similan Islands National Park in the Northwest or the beautiful Hin Deang / Hin Muang in the South. These dive destinations are home to an abundance of large pelagics (Whale Sharks and Oceanic Manta Rays) and macro subjects (seahorses, ghost pipefishes, etc). These are definitely the best spots for a dive trip in Thailand!

Best time to visit these islands is from October to May when it is the dry season and diving conditions are at their best. Phuket liveaboard diving is the way to go as multiple day itineraries allow divers to access the islands which are far away from the mainland.

Surin Islands

from 42,000THB

The reefs here are filled with marine life. There is a good chance to see whitetip reef sharks and turtles around these shallow waters. There is a wide variety of diving on these islands – gentle reefs that have a spread of hard corals to the deep wall dives.

The dive sites in the South Andaman is made mainly of Limestone rock which forms beautiful structures above and below the sea. Marine life thrives in these waters with the occasional whale sharks at 8 Mile Rock or schooling fishes at Stonehenge. Definitely a must go destination for a dive trip in Thailand!

An old sand dredger that was purposely sunk to create an artificial reef. It sits at a sandy bottom of 20m and has been broken up due to the tsunami in 2006. We see schooling fishes and lots of different morays, such as honeycomb, white eye, giant etc. This wreck is a great way to finish up your Phuket liveaboard dive trip as it is located nearby to the pier.

dive trips thailand

The top dive site in Thailand is shaped like a horseshoe and in the middle of nowhere. Due to its location and terrain, it attracts an abundance of marine life from the small seahorses to the large whalesharks! Schooling fishes surround the rock and a variety of life from deep to shallow makes the whole dive fun. Weather and condition permitting, we always try to dive here 2 to 3 times to maximise our chances to see stuff.

dive trips thailand

A dive site with massive underwater boulders that spans from 14m to 40m, the strongest currents within the itinerary can be found here. Alot of gorgonian sea fans thrive in this environment with resident giant groupers and the largest school of barracudas always nearby. This is a good spot for the occasional mantas and whalesharks, especially during dusk.

dive trips thailand

Koh Bon is the most popular dive site to dive with large oceanic manta rays during a Phuket liveaboard dive trip. Mantas love hanging out at the underwater ridge where the strong currents converge to bring plenty of food for them. It is possible to dive with whalesharks here too! Large school of trevallies and rainbow runners are a constant sighting.

These nine beautiful islands are gazetted as a national park and have the best diving around these waters. Island number 1 to 3 are off-limits as it is meant to be a turtle sanctuary. Divers get to dive from islands 4 to 9 with various dive sites spread in between.

Why Thailand Is Great For Liveaboard Diving

Known as the ‘Land of Smiles,’ Thailand is a great place for divers to explore a stunning underwater environment. With over 1400 islands and some of the best marine conditions in Asia, diving in Thailand’s waters – whether by liveaboard or day trips – can be an experience of a lifetime.

Liveaboards are the best way to discover the many dive sites around Thailand. With the constant movement of the boat and the ability to explore farther away from shore, liveaboard trips provide a whole new level of discovery and adventure. Plus, liveaboard diving allows you to maximize your dive time, as you don’t need to worry about getting back on land for the night.

Let’s look at some of the many reasons why liveaboard diving in Thailand is an unforgettable experience.

Many Dive Sites to Explore

Within the two main areas, the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, there are over a hundred dive sites to discover. From shallower reefs with stunning hard coral formations to deep drop-offs, caverns, and pinnacles – you can explore it all in Thailand.

In addition, if wreck dives are your thing, there are plenty of sunken ships to explore too. Some of the best-known wrecks include the HTMS Kut, a WWII landing ship intentionally sunk in 2006 to mark the King of Thailand’s 60th year in power, and SS Suddhadib, sunk in 1945 after a suspected bomb attack.

Chance to Swim With Sharks

If shark diving is on your bucket list, you’ll be happy to know liveaboard diving in Thailand can provide the perfect opportunity. Off the coast of Thailand, you can spot various shark species. Nurse, bamboo, bull, and tiger sharks are just some of the larger pelagics that call the waters of Thailand their home.

Ideal Water Conditions

Underwater visibility is brilliant, ranging from 10 to 30 meters depending on the location and time of year. Water temperatures are also pleasant at around 80-86°F (27-30°C) year-round. As for water currents, you can expect minimal currents in most places. This makes for enjoyable, easy diving conditions. Some areas are more prone to strong currents, so it’s best to research the site before you head out on your Thailand liveaboard trip.

Perfect For Macro Divers

While Thailand is not part of the Coral Triangle, its close proximity means it is home to plenty of macro critters. Anemone shrimp, seahorses, frogfish, and nudibranchs are just some of the fantastic creatures you can expect to encounter on your dives. This underwater paradise is also home to many reef fish species, such as clownfish and parrotfish.

Affordable Liveaboard Options

The wealth of underwater and on-shore activities makes Thailand the perfect place for a liveaboard trip – and it is one of the more budget-friendly options . There are approximately 25 liveaboards operating in Thailand, ranging from basic boats to more luxurious vessels. Whether you are on a tight budget or looking for a touch of luxury, you can find a Thailand liveaboard that meets your needs.

Liveaboards vs. Thailand Dive Resorts

Thailand offers a huge range of dive resorts, so you may wonder why you should choose a liveaboard experience instead. Generally speaking, you are limited to the number of dive sites you can visit when staying at a dive resort. In contrast, liveaboard trips allow you to explore a much more comprehensive range – while taking you to each area as standard.

Liveaboards are also an excellent choice as the number of divers on the boat is limited, meaning you may have a quieter time underwater. Plus, you get to enjoy the company of your fellow divers and crew on board, so it’s a great way to make like-minded friends.

Things to Consider When Booking a Liveaboard in Thailand

Thailand may be a premier diving location, but it’s still important to research when booking a liveaboard. You should consider certain points to ensure you have the most enjoyable experience possible.

Locations Visited

As previously mentioned, diving in Thailand can be separated into two distinct areas – the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. Most Thailand liveaboards concentrate on the Andaman Sea, but you may be able to find one that ventures to the Gulf.

Make sure you check what your liveaboard offers and choose the itinerary best suited to your needs. With this in mind, let’s look at some of the best locations within each area.

The Andaman Sea

Stretching along the western side of Thailand, the Andaman Sea features some of the most popular dive sites around the country.

  • Phuket: Vibrant and colorful reefs, walls, and deep wrecks make this an excellent spot for diving.
  • Koh Lanta: Home to some of the most diverse and beautiful coral reefs in Thailand.
  • Similan and Surin Islands: These beautiful islands are known for their soft corals and large pelagic fish.
  • Richelieu Rock: Off Mu Koh Surin National Park coast, Richelieu Rock is known for its large population of whale sharks.

The Gulf of Thailand

The southwestern and northern sides of Thailand are home to the Gulf of Thailand, which also offers some excellent dive sites.

  • Koh Tao Island: Popular for its abundant sea life and easy-to-dive waters.
  • Koh Chang: With some awesome wreck dives, this more remote location is perfect for experienced divers.
  • Koh Samui: A prevalent location for both seasoned divers and non-divers alike.

Type of Boat

A wide variety of liveaboards are available in Thailand, with each boat offering something slightly different. You will find wooden hull boats, catamarans, steel-hulled vessels, and even traditional Indonesian phinisi boats while searching for a Thai liveaboard. Always read the boat’s description and check reviews from previous divers to ensure it meets your needs.

To help make your decision easier, we have outlined some of the best liveaboards in Thailand below – so be sure to take a look!

Liveaboard Trip Length

One of the best things about liveaboard diving in Thailand is many favored dive sites are located close to one another. This means that even short trips offer a great variety of dives, while longer excursions allow you to explore more in-depth.

Thailand liveaboard trips average around 5 days and 4 nights in length. There are shorter trips for 3 or 4 days and more extended options ranging up to 11 days in total. No matter the length you choose, you will have a fantastic time exploring everything Thailand liveaboard diving offers.

Daily Dive Amount

You don’t book on a liveaboard in Thailand just to enjoy the views and local culture – you’re here to dive! Most liveaboards offer up to 4 daily dives, but it can be less depending on the locations visited. Many itineraries offer night dives, which provide an excellent opportunity to see nocturnal marine life – if this is something of interest, be sure to check the schedule of your chosen trip.

Experience Requirements

Depending on where in Thailand your liveaboard visits, the currents can vary from calm to very strong and unpredictable. A wide range of liveaboards in Thailand do not require any previously logged dives, but some do ask for over 30 logged hours and an advanced open water certificate. As such, you must always check the experience requirements for each trip before you book to ensure that it suits your skills.

Dive Insurance

Whether booking on a liveaboard in Thailand or anywhere else in the world, we always recommend purchasing dive insurance before your trip. The added peace of mind offered by dive insurance is well worth the cost, and it is often a requirement by liveaboard operators.

We recommend DiveAssure – the leading dive insurance with the most comprehensive Diving Accident and Dive Travel insurance plans. Get your dive insurance now and enjoy your scuba diving vacation without worries.

Nitrox Availability

This mix of oxygen and nitrogen is becoming increasingly popular among divers, and many Thailand liveaboards offer it as an option. You will need a nitrox certificate to use this gas, but if you don’t have one, some liveaboards in Thailand offer courses on board.

Required Gear

Gear rentals are not uncommon on Thailand liveaboards but do come at an additional cost. Many divers prefer to pay the rental fee over taking their gear on the plane. That said, you will need to check your chosen liveaboard offers rental gear before you book, or check if there are any specific gear requirements if bringing your own.

What Is the Best Season for Liveaboards in Thailand?

You can dive year-round in Thailand, as the two distinct locations offer alternating dive seasons. If the Andaman Sea is your chosen destination, the best time to go would be from October to April. On the other hand, the best season for liveaboards in the Gulf of Thailand is from May to September.

Whale shark season is from February to April, and manta ray sightings also occur during this period. Because of the various dive sites and varying conditions, the best season for liveaboards in Thailand is down to you and what you wish to see.

If you have a specific dive site you wish to visit, you should note that some areas are only accessible during certain times of the year.

The Best Itineraries for Liveaboards in Thailand

The best itineraries for liveaboards in Thailand are based on the beautiful dive locations found in the Andaman Sea. There are a few different routes to choose from, but you can always expect to visit fantastic dive sites, see stunning landscapes, and witness beautiful marine life!

Similan and Surin Islands

One of Thailand’s most popular itineraries for liveaboards is the Similan and Surin Islands route. This trip usually lasts 5 or 7 days and covers some of the best diving spots found in Thailand’s Andaman Sea. Expect to see a fantastic array of corals, vibrant marine life, pristine beaches, and even an occasional whale shark!

Best of Thailand

For a full-on 11-day excursion, there is the Best of Thailand itinerary. This route covers not only the Similan and Surin Islands but also includes Koh Bon and Richelieu Rock, two of Thailand’s best dive sites. Expect to see an amazing variety of coral formations, plus plenty of pelagic fish, including barracuda, leopard sharks, and manta rays.

Southern Explorer

This route focuses on all the famous spots situated around Phuket. Shark Point, Anemone Reef, Hin Daeng, Racha, and Koh Phi Phi are just some of the areas experienced on this short but sweet 3-day itinerary. Expect to enjoy plenty of excellent wall diving, vibrant reefs, and a dazzling variety of marine life.

What Is the Required Budget for Liveaboard Diving in Thailand?

Liveaboards in Thailand are renowned for being incredibly affordable. Prices can vary, but for a 5-day trip, you can expect to pay $700-$1000. Longer 11-day adventures can cost around $3000, whereas shorter 3-day vacations can be as little as $500.

Prices fluctuate according to the season, route, and boat, so do check in advance when is the most cost-effective time to go. All liveaboard trips will include food and drinks onboard, but you should also factor in any additional costs, such as transfers, diving gear rentals, and park fees.

Liveaboards in Thailand are in general much more affordable than those in other popular destinations such as the Maldives , the Bahamas , or Indonesia .

Koh Tao diving does not only offer great dives for beginners but also already certified scuba divers will enjoy their underwater experiences here. Having a great reputation for dive schools , it is also a great place to learn some new skills and upgrade your diving levels. The dive sites are located all around the island and accessible only by boat. There are many colorful reef fish to see, turtles, barracudas, and for macro objects, there are critters and nudibranch. If you are lucky, you also have a chance to meet some whale sharks.

2. Koh Phi Phi

Many dive sites for spotting leopard sharks.

Shortly after the movie "The Beach", the island gained popularity among tourists having picture-perfect white-sand beaches and clear blue waters. Around the island, there are plenty of dive sites, wherein some you may spot the leopard sharks . Macro lovers can find some seahorses and mantis shrimp. For divers, who seek the big fish, there is a chance of seeing whale sharks and manta rays . Rock formations and beautiful corals are another reason the island is great for diving. The dives are done only by boat and the diving conditions are suitable for all levels. You find dive sites for complete novices but also deeper dives for experienced divers.

3. Koh Lipe

Most beautiful soft corals.

Compared to Koh Phi Phi and Phuket, Koh Lipe island is less touristic and thus, its coral is very well preserved which makes it a fantastic diving destination. It has some of the most beautiful soft corals in Asia. Koh Lipe is part of the Tarutao National Marine Park that has many opportunities for scuba divers with all levels. Many tropical fish species can be found here, turtles, dolphins, and even dugongs and sperm whales ! Besides amazing marine life, it also has nice pinnacles and rock formations.

4. Surin Islands

Unique species and diverse hard and soft coral.

Under the protection of the UNESCO environmental program, the Surin Islands are truly a pleasure to dive at. The island's dive sites have amazing hard coral diversity , much soft coral, and are rich in marine life . The island is remote and not as popular among tourists, which is why you can find some species of fish here that you cannot see in other dive destinations in Thailand. You might spot some bumphead parrotfish, napoleon wrasse, tomato anemonefish, yellow-masked angelfish, and barramundi. The Surin Islands can be explored by a dive liveaboard that mostly run from October to early May. The rest of the year the Mu Ko Surin Marine National Park is closed for divers.

5. Similan Islands

Great for spotting manta rays and whale sharks.

A dive liveaboard is the best way to get the most out of Similan Islands diving. Abundant marine life, big pelagics, soft and hard coral plus easy diving conditions, warm waters and relatively good visibility are some of the reasons many scuba divers are fond of this destination. There are also plenty of macro subjects but most divers visit the islands to see the manta rays and whale sharks . Moreover, you can see a good number of shark species when scuba diving in the Similan Islands.

6. Phuket

Variety of options for different tastes.

Diving in Phuket gives scuba divers many options. You can find some secluded luxurious dive resorts or budget-friendly accommodations, make some day trips to the local reefs, or hop on a liveaboard and let local thai divers show you some of the best dive sites in Thailand. There are great sites for experienced divers and options for total beginners to start their diving journey. When diving in Phuket, you can find some great deep drop-offs , pinnacles that are covered with coral, some caverns and caves , and even some wrecks . The marine life around Phuket goes from big to small creatures. You can meet manta rays, whale sharks, and leopard sharks, but also anemone fish, harlequin shrimp, and ghost ornate pipefish just to name a few.

Excellent wreck dives

Scuba diving in Pattaya is most known for its excellent wreck dives and offering nice coral dive sites. One of the most famous coral dive sites is at Koh Man Wichai, where the coral resembles a giant hand and thus has been named as the "fingers". While diving around the beautiful corals you can spot some pufferfish, stingrays, angelfish, and many more. The Pattaya wrecks are also covered with reefs, where you can spot some rays, barracudas, batfish, and even some sharks. The wrecks are most suitable for advanced divers, though, as they lay around 100ft (30m) or more.

8. Koh Samui

Calm waters, good visibility, and good to see whale sharks.

Being a very popular holiday destination and more crowded than some other locations in Thailand, scuba diving in Koh Samui seems less appealing to many divers. Nevertheless, it offers beautiful dive sites not to miss and offers many day trips to enjoy them. Some of the best dive sites in Thailand , like the Sail Rock, are very closely located to Koh Samui. Whale sharks are often spotted when scuba diving around Koh Samui. You can also see many barracudas, turtles, jackfish, and various nudibranch and shrimp for macro lovers. Additionally, the diving conditions around the dive destination are great throughout the year, with calm waters and generally good visibility.

DIVING INFORMATION

Intro to thailand.

The Southeast Asian country with a tropical climate and warm waters is known best for its beautiful white-sand beaches, stunning temples, rich culture, and delicious food. It is not hard to guess why many people are attracted to visit Thailand. Most of the best scuba diving sites are on the southeast of Thailand, in the Andaman sea. On the east coast, on the Gulf of Thailand, lies one of the most popular destinations for dive certifications, Koh Tao. All around Thailand you can find diverse marine life and beautiful corals . The destination offers many opportunities for scuba divers to dive at beautiful reefs,  explore wrecks , deep drop-offs, caverns, pinnacles, walls, and tunnels. Besides scuba diving, Thailand offers plenty of topside activities. Some of the islands offer great nightlife, while some others are quieter and great for relaxing.

THAILAND MARINE LIFE

In general, the Andaman Sea boasts a larger variety of fish species and coral. As to what you can expect to see - the coastline and islands stretch over a large distance so it greatly depends on where you choose to dive. Manta rays,  whale sharks , black/white tips, and turtles are just a few of the "big things" to expect. Not only a great destination to see big fish, but Thailand also has many  macro photography  subjects.

Here is a list of the marine animals you are likely to see when diving Thailand's best dive spots :

  • Whale Shark
  • Leopard Shark
  • Whitetip Shark
  • Blacktip Shark
  • Spotted Eagle Ray
  • Bluespotted Ribbontail Ray
  • Trumpetfish
  • Butterflyfish
  • Triggerfish
  • Ghost Pipefish

Diving Conditions

  • Water Temperatures : 81-84 F / 27- 86 C
  • Visibility:  32 - 131 ft (10 - 40m) depending on the season and location.
  • Depth Range:  16 - 131 ft (5 - 40 m)

Travel Information

How to get there.

Thailand currently has six international airports, with Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok being the main gateway to the country. It is easy to get anywhere from Bangkok.

How to Dive Thailand

Liveaboards are available to explore the Andaman Sea and Similan Islands and reach dive sites you otherwise can't reach. Thus, liveaboard diving would be the best option to get the most out of diving in Thailand. Otherwise, there are also dive resorts available around Thailand. The best resort destinations are Phuket, Phi Phi islands and Khao Lak.

Best Time to Dive

Within the Gulf of Thailand, diving is available almost year-round. November is the beginning of the monsoon season in which visibility drops and heavy rainstorms can occur but by the mid/end of December things typically have gone back to normal. On the Andaman side, dive times are more limited. Some areas are only available to dive parts of the year (like the Similians and Koh Lanta). In general October - April is the best time to dive the Andaman Sea.

Topside & Non-Diving Activities

You can try to "island-hop" to different destinations comparing their offerings. Every island has its own personality, so depending on what you are looking for, certain islands would fit best. Looking for a night out in the town? Koh Phi Phi on the Andaman side, or Koh Tao in the gulf would be a good start. Prefer a relaxing evening instead? The Andamans, Koh Lanta, or Koh Samui in the gulf could be better alternatives.

Thailand is known for its beautiful beaches and some impressive temples. Don't forget to visit the famous Grand Palace or Temple of the Emerald Buddha. Some of the other things to do are to see the muay Thai boxing match, visit a floating market, go hiking or discover their beautiful nature. Moreover, get all your tensions out with a proper Thai massage. In case you have never tried a Thai massage, then just a heads up, don't expect it to be relaxing but for sure it will make you feel much better afterward!

I did my open water and advanced certification in Thailand. All of my diving was on the west coast around Railay Beach, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, and the Similan Islands. Seeing my first shark is what got me hooked, and why I did 24 dives in as many days. The marine life I encountered on those dives spoiled me, with lots of eels, leopard sharks, barracuda, turtles, rays, cuttlefish, ghost pipefish, seahorses, and reef sharks. I enjoyed the diving and the variety of conditions I got to experience while on a liveaboard in the Similan and Surin Islands. I also enjoyed all of the day trips from various laid-back backpacker spots. Topside Thailand holds just as much (if not more) thrall for me - the food, the people, and the stunning landscapes are some of my favourites in the world. It's worth taking time to see more of Thailand than just the southern beach and diving areas, so try to visit Northern Thailand for different cuisines and experiences.

Thailand is not on many seasoned dive travelers bucket list, but here are a few reasons why it should be: - world class dive sites like Richelieu Rock in the Similan Islands, King Cruiser wreck in Koh Phi Phi, and the pinnacles of Hin Daeng and Hin Muang - go in the right season (Dec to Mar) and you should see a ton of marine life including big schools of jack and barracuda, whale sharks, mantas and many more - good for macro and wide angle - really friendly people and amazing thai food - great beaches, isolated islands, and fun cities to visit before or after scuba diving - very affordable and easy on the pocket I was on a liveaboard trip and that is the best way to dive Thailand as most of the thai best dive sites are a long commute from land.

Hin Daeng and Hin Muang

Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are widely considered the best dive sites in Thailand outside of the Similans. Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are two dive sites on the west coast of Thailand that can be accessed by either live aboard or by day trips out of Ko Phi Phi or Ko Lanta. These two sites are best known for their frequency in Manta Ray and Whale shark sightings. Both scuba dive sites are remote deep water pinnacles. Hin Deang just barely breaks the surface, where as Hin Muang is a submerged pinnacle with its base on one side leveling out around 60 meters, and the other side is a vertical wall that plunges into a deep abyss. Both sites are more advanced sites, and Hin Muang often has relatively strong currents. Both sites are right next to each and always dived together in one trip. At both dive sites you will see huge schools of fish, pelagics, lion fish, nudibranchs, Manta Rays, whale sharks, and reef sharks. Both sites are within the boundaries of a marine park and attract a massive amount of life. The ride out to the dive diving spots can be rough, and if you are doing a day trip out of Ko Lanta/ Ko Phi Phi it will take about 2 1/2 hours to make it out to the site. Diving these two sites in Thailand on a day trip will take up an entire day. Due to the remoteness of these two sites, crowds are not something you have to worry about when scuba diving here. Anyone diving on the West coast of Thailand should not miss these two sites.

Koh Tao, Thailand

I lived and worked on Koh Tao as a Dive Master for a year. Getting your open water certification is on the list of things to do for most young people back packing through Thailand. More open water certs are completed on Koh Tao than any other location in the world. Koh Tao is a small vibrant island in the Gulf of Thailand. Koh Tao has good diving, great night life, and plenty of topside activities to do.

The Diving: There are good things and bad things about diving on Koh Tao. First we will start off with some of the negative aspects of diving Koh Tao. Koh Tao dive sites can be very crowded. Some of the larger resort boats hold close to 50 divers. Dive sites like White Rock, Twins, Japanese Gardens can have a dozen boats onsite all at once. Sometimes dive sites look like parking lots. Also due to the fact that most people are on Koh Tao to learn to dive, there is a huge number of beginner divers everywhere. Now for the good things. Due to the fact there is a huge number of dive ops, all of which are very different, it's easy to find one that offers what you are looking for. There are small shops with small boats, big shops with big boats, etc. Also the diving is cheap, really cheap. Due to all the competition on the island, courses and diving prices are extremely low and affordable. There is also a variety of dive sites for both beginners and more experienced divers. Notable sites are Laem Thian with great swim throughs, and geographical features, frequented by black tips. Chumpon Pinnacle was my favorite site, which is frequented by bull sharks, whale sharks, huge schools of fish, tornadoes of barracuda, and giant groupers. White rock, which can be crowded at certain times, is a nice reef with lots of life, no shortage of morays and blue spotted sting rays. Sail Rock is also easily accessible from Koh Tao, and Sail Rock is without a doubt the best site in the Gulf of Thailand. Sail Rock is frequented by whale sharks, bull sharks, huge schools of fish, big schools of barracuda and Trevally, as well as a few resident giant morays. Turtles can be seen on the island but are surprisingly scarce, and also you WILL NOT see a manta ray in the gulf of Thailand. There are also a couple of wrecks on the island that were sunk to make artificial reefs. The diving on Koh Tao is good, but it is not world class, and is even not as good as the diving on the West Coast of Thailand. But it is a great island that is lots of fun and definitely worth visiting.

Topside: Koh Tao has a large variety of restaurants and resorts. Everything from 5 start luxury resorts, to dirt cheap hostels. Koh Tao also has a great night life and huge party scene. Lots of bars, and drinks are very cheap. Choppers is an Aussie owned sports bar on the island that opens early and they show NFL games, Soccer, Baseball, Cricket, everything, so you can still watch your favorite sports games while on the island. Rock Climbing is another popular topside activity on the island, companies like Good Times Adventures offers a variety of activities other than diving. Koh Tao is also a great place to learn free diving. There are a few free diving schools on the island with great instructors.

Getting to the island is also relatively easy. From Bangkok you can book transport down from a few different companies, such as SongSerm, and Lompraya. Buses run from Bangkok to Chumpon, where you board a ferry that takes you to either Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, or Koh Samui. You can also fly from Bangkok to Koh Samui, and then jump on a ferry or speed boat over to Koh Tao.

My review is for diving in Kohn Phi Phi.

The island is full of dive operations. Great choice prices are the same so pick one you like. Unfortunately I was there during rainy season and boat rides were rough but once under water it is one of the prettiest places to dive. Visibility was not as good as during the winter time, so I was told but otherwise a really good experience.

The nice thing about Phi Phi is that once you are done diving seafood and beers are waiting on every corner

Wonderful diving and crew

Unforgettable Dive Adventure - Easter 2024

My recent experience aboard this liveaboard surpassed all expectations and left me with memories to cherish for a lifetime. From the moment we stepped on board, we were greeted with warm hospitality and professionalism from the entire crew. The staff's extensive knowledge of the dive sites and dedication to safety reassured us throughout the trip, allowing us to focus entirely on the incredible diving experiences that awaited us. The liveaboard itself was a comfortable and well-equipped vessel, providing all the amenities one could need for a week-long dive excursion. Our cabins were meticulously maintained. The communal areas, including the lounge, dining area, and sundeck, were inviting spaces to relax and socialize with fellow divers between dives. But it was the diving that truly stole the show. Each day brought new and breathtaking underwater landscapes, from vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life to exhilarating drift dives along dramatic walls and pinnacles. The dive guides were knowledgeable and passionate about marine conservation, enriching our dives with fascinating insights into the underwater ecosystem. One highlight of our trip was the opportunity to embark on night dives, where we witnessed a whole new world come to life beneath the surface. The nocturnal marine creatures were nothing short of mesmerizing, providing an unforgettable experience that we'll cherish forever. Of course, no dive trip would be complete without delicious food to fuel our adventures, and the onboard chef certainly delivered. From hearty breakfasts to gourmet dinners, every meal was a culinary delight, with plenty of options to accommodate dietary preferences and restrictions. In conclusion, my experience aboard The Phinisi Liveaboard exceeded all expectations, thanks to the exceptional crew, comfortable accommodations, and unforgettable diving adventures. Whether you're a seasoned diver or new to the sport, I cannot recommend this liveaboard highly enough for your next underwater expedition. Special shout out to Victoria who was an amazing Dive Guide and quite literally runs a tight ship! - Pradeesh

Boats and Pros: Exceeding Expectations, a Phinisi Story

The Phinisi exceeded expectations and beyond. The attention to every detail of the trip was amazing. My appreciation for the crew is unmeasurable bc they actually care. Fantastic food and no shortage of meals, saw all the marine things one could hope for, the quarters and boat were very comfortable, the rental gear was top notch and felt I was in good hands the entire trip. You know it’s the best when you don’t want to get off the boat. I hope I get another opportunity to dive with Phinisi and crew again someday. Thanks for the memorable experience! 10/10, A+, 5 stars.

  • 8.0 Very good

A really complete crew and vessel.

Community on the boat. Diving was fabtastic. The crew became like family.

Food and Diving or Diving and Food.

I enjoyed my first trip to Thailand, I have dived in several locations in 2023, 5 locations and loved them all but my trip on the Phinisi was the best of all, loved the boat and the crew were great, and and yes once again loved the food. The dive sites were varied and great with plenty of life, on one trip had to push the fish out of the way so I could see my buddy.

Very pleasant and positive experience

Little bamboo sharks hiding in almost every crack on Koh Doc Mai dive. Loved the “Chimney” in Koh Haa. Overall very relaxing and enjoyable diving trip. Definitely would recommend Phinisi as a great liveaboard.

Incredible: everything!

Marco the trip leader is a true professional and he and the rest of the staff bend over backwards to make it your best trip ever. The dive sites were good, avoiding the day trip boats very well. The food was out of this world, and the dorms were very comfy with softer beds and cold AC.

Beat diving experience in my diving career

The entire experience was a highlight. Could not think of a way for it to be a better experience.

The 9 Best Spots for Scuba Diving in Thailand

dive trips thailand

Georgette Douwma / Getty Images

With two coasts teeming with life, Thailand is a veritable playground for scuba enthusiasts. Dive shops on Koh Tao , an island in the Gulf of Thailand, certify more new divers than anywhere else in the world.

Koh Tao may be an epicenter for scuba culture , but most of the best spots for scuba diving in Thailand are located on the other side. The Andaman Sea is rich with accessible sites hosting reef dwellers, pelagic, macro, and whatever other marine life you hope to encounter. Diving in Thailand is relatively inexpensive , so you’re probably going to need more pages in your logbook.

As is always the case with diving, conditions can make or break an experience—even at these top places to dive in Thailand. Current and visibility fluctuate, as do the crowds. No one enjoys playing bumper boats at popular dive sites, but you may have to jockey for position during the high season .

The Similan Islands

danilovi / Getty Images

Any discussion about the best diving in Thailand has to first begin with the famous Similan Islands. Situated far off the west coast in the Andaman Sea, Mu Koh Similan National Park is so beautiful that daily visitor numbers had to be capped to control impact.

The best way to dive in the Similan Islands is by booking a liveaboard package. Visibility is often excellent, but strong currents are common. Warm water temperatures make wetsuits optional. Plenty of whale sharks and mantas pass through between February and April .

Getting There: The most popular jump-off point for the Similan Islands is Khao Lak in Phang Nga Province on the west coast. Excursions also depart from Phuket.

The Surin Islands

Way north of the Similan Islands and equally as beautiful, the five islands of Mu Koh Surin National Park are another top place to dive in Thailand. Like the Similans, the Surin Islands are best enjoyed by booking a liveaboard.

The Surin Islands attract less attention than the Similans—and that’s a good thing. Plankton can affect visibility, but it also draws feeding mantas and whale sharks!

Turtles are common as are blacktip and whitetip reef sharks. The world-famous Richelieu Rock dive site is your best chance for seeing the biggest pelagic creatures materialize from the blue.

Ideal depths for diving range between 10-30 meters and the current is typically less troublesome than in the Similans.

Getting There: The Surin Islands can be reached from Phuket or Khao Lak on the mainland.

The HTMS Kled Kaew

Borut Furlan / Getty Images

Transliterated spellings differ, but this Royal Thai Navy transport ship was deliberately sunk in 2014 as an artificial reef. Lots of marine life showed appreciation by moving in. Much like the not-so-far-away King Cruiser wreck, lionfish practically run the place.

At over 150 feet long and with a massive cargo hold, the HTMS Kled Kaew wreck is relatively easy to penetrate by experienced divers. You’ll need at least Advanced certification. The ship settled with a slight list between 14 and 27 meters. Strong currents are common.

Getting There: The HTMS Kled Kaew wreck is between Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi. You can dive there from either island.

Koh Bida Nok (Koh Phi Phi)

guntaphat pokasasipun / Getty Images

Located just south of the Phi Phi Islands , Koh Bida Nok provides some of the best non-liveaboard diving in Thailand. Access couldn’t be easier, and even wall and cave diving are available on the northern side of the island. An abundance of blacktips, leopard sharks, and banded sea snakes patrol the area.

You’ll find some good swim-through opportunities at nearby Koh Bida Nai, but group snorkeling excursions may be splashing around on the surface. Some exciting macro life such as nudibranchs (sea slug) and seahorses can be found there.

Getting There: Koh Bida Nok and Koh Bida Nai are close to Koh Phi Phi. Some dive trips to the HTMS Kled Kaew may include a second dive in the afternoon at Koh Bida Nok because of the shallow options.

Koh Haa (Koh Lanta)

Placebo365 / Getty Images

Koh Haa (five islands) is arguably one of the most exciting places for diving in Thailand. The site is crammed with fun options for divers of all skill levels—although Advanced certification is preferred.

The optional swim-throughs at Koh Haa add an exciting twist, and brave divers can enter a cavern at 20 meters known as The Cathedral. You can surface inside and remove your regulator to test some of the trapped air!

Excellent visibility and a wide variety of life (including plenty of sharks) make Koh Haa a top pick. Due to Koh Haa’s popularity, enjoying a good experience there requires going with a seasoned professional who knows the nooks and crannies of the site.

Getting There: Koh Haa is less than an hour from Koh Lanta .

Sail Rock (Koh Pha Ngan)

Reinhard Dirscherl / Getty Images

Sail Rock, a top dive site located north of Koh Pha Ngan and south of Koh Tao, is widely considered the best in the Samui Archipelago . Barracuda of all varieties, Giant Grouper, and whale sharks frequent the area. Big pelagic stuff isn’t the only draw—nudibranchs and ghost pipefish like to come out to play, too.

Unfortunately, Sail Rock’s notoriety keeps it perpetually busy with dive boats. Try to dive there in one of Thailand's "shoulder" seasons .

Getting There: Sail Rock is best accessed from Koh Pha Ngan, but Koh Tao and Koh Samui also run boats.

Chumpon Pinnacle (Koh Tao)

Koh Tao is a very popular (and cheap) place to become scuba certified in the world. Of the many dive sites within striking distance of the island, Chumpon Pinnacle is considered the best. Depths range between 12 and 35 meters deep; visibility is usually excellent. Whale sharks frequent the site between March and May.

The Southwest Pinnacle, another top dive site in the area, isn’t connected—it’s way south of Koh Tao.

Getting There: Depending on conditions, Chumpon Pinnacle is around 45 minutes from Koh Tao.

Stonehenge (Koh Lipe)

by YamMo / Getty Images

Unlike the prehistoric monument in England, the many granite slabs at the Stonehenge dive site near Koh Lipe aren’t a man-made feature. Instead, they add a natural enhancement to an already great place to dive.

Impressive soft coral begins at around 5 meters deep. The relatively shallow depth allows for colorful photos with abundant light. Large schools of snappers frequent the area as do turtles.

Getting There: Koh Lipe is in the Andaman Sea near the Malaysian border. In fact, you can cross between Malaysia and Thailand there via a small immigration point.

Hin Daeng / Hin Muang

Rene Frederick / Getty Images

Also in the Andaman Sea, Hin Daeng (Red Rock) and Hin Muang (Purple Rock) are as the names imply: large rocks covered with colorful life. The two rocks, approximately 500 meters apart, take a lot of time and fuel to reach. The payoff can be memorable for experienced divers willing to go the distance.

Hin Muang boasts a wall that plunges to around 65 meters deep! Drifts are spectacular, and schools of giant mantas frequent both rocks. The site hosts plenty of life, big and small. Tuna, barracuda, and jackfish are common, as are their pelagic friends.

With relatively deep dives and rough conditions both above and below the surface, Hin Daeng and Hin Muang aren’t suitable for beginners.

Getting There: Both sites require a long boat trip (sometimes in rough seas) from either Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi (2.5 hours), or Phuket. Sometimes divers must surface and wait for conditions to improve. Booking a liveaboard is the best way to score an enjoyable experience at the site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Thailand is an excellent location for scuba diving, with many dive sites considered the best worldwide. A tropical paradise with vast coastlines, Thailand is a playground for scuba divers all year round.

The Andaman sea on Thailand’s Southwest coast offers many first-class dive spots with a consistently warm water temperature and exceptional underwater visibility; it is home to the most extraordinary and breathtaking corals and marine life you will discover anywhere in the world.

Phuket is a sought-after scuba diving destination that offers divers the opportunity to explore the stunning marine life of the Andaman Sea. While Phuket offers diving opportunities all year round, the ideal time for diving is from November to April. During these months, the conditions for diving are optimal, with the slightest chance of rain and storms. The sea is usually calm, the sun is shining, and the water is crystal clear, making it an excellent time for divers to explore the underwater world. The water temperature during these months is also at its best, ranging between 28 to 31 degrees Celsius, providing a comfortable environment for divers. Additionally, the visibility during this period is excellent, allowing divers to witness the diverse range of marine life that inhabits the Andaman Sea.

As a beginner, having questions and being cautious when contemplating scuba diving is natural. Scuba diving is enjoyed by thousands of divers every day worldwide and is considered a low-risk activity compared to other activities and sports. The most common medical needs arise from seasickness, sunburn and dehydration, which are preventable and entirely in your control.

Of course, safety levels are determined by what goes beforehand. It is imperative that training is of high quality and carried out by professionally trained divers, where skills are practiced several times in shallow waters before continuing into deeper waters. Within this professional, qualified environment, you can be assured that the equipment used is fit for purpose and serviced within the manufacturers’ guidelines.

For new divers, you can explore the coral reefs of Koh Racha islands with no prior experience for 5,000 Thailand Baht. For new scuba divers looking at getting their worldwide diving licence, the PADI Open Water Diver course is set over three days at 13,500 Thailand Baht. If you are a certified diver looking to explore Phuket’s main dive sites and surrounding islands, Thailand divers run three daily dive trips costing 3,900 Thailand Baht.

Phuket and Koh Samui are tropical paradises and deserve a place at the top of any destination wish list. Some differences exist while they have similarities, such as beautiful white beaches and transparent, inviting waters. Koh Samui is more spread out and quieter, with a laid-back vibe and perhaps a little rustic.

Scuba diving is said to be better around Phuket than in Koh Samui, although you can explore the underwater world around Koh Samui. However, Koh Samui is located in the Gulf of Thailand on the Eastern coast, sitting in what is considered a large bay with little tidal or current movement. Such conditions result in a less sophisticated biodiverse location, and whilst it may be worth looking, most Koh Samui trips will head to other places.

In contrast, Phuket sits on the West Coast, with the Andaman Sea providing rich, ever-developing biodiverse ecosystems which bring a vibrant, enchanting array of life. Here, you can dive some of the best sites in the world with good chances of sighting Manta Rays, Whale Sharks, Reef Sharks, turtles and a phenomenal amount of other tropical life. Vibrant, integral corals and reefs are waiting to be explored. Phuket offers a variety of experiences when scuba diving Thailand, from Wall dives to wrecks, from tunnels to caves; every need is met, and memories are made.

Phuket Island province has an area of 576 km 2 (222 sq mi)

English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas, but a little Thai will get you a long way. Speaking a little of the local language shows respect and care for the culture; most people love it when you try. Learn the basics of help, please, thank you, and remember that Google Translate is a handy app you can out on your phone to help out. Our  Phuket diving  trips depart from Chalong port which is located on the Southern tip of Phuket.

The currency used in Phuket is the Baht (THB). 1 Baht = 100 Satangs. Major credit cards are widely accepted across the island.  Banks offer the best exchange rates. Having some cash on hand for small vendors, street food, and tips is good.

Plane landing at Phuket Airport HKT

Travelers flying to Phuket have two options: a direct flight into Phuket International Airport or a one-hour connecting flight from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport. When planning your trip, depending on where you are coming from, there may be several stops, so plan ahead!

Phuket is home to over 40 gorgeous beaches, and it’s known worldwide that this is an area of stunning beauty. There is a beach for every type of traveler. As a rule of thumb, northern and southern beaches will be quieter and more relaxed, perfect for when you’re ready just to chill. However, if you are ready to experience the legendary nightlife here, you will want to head toward the bustling western beaches for music and dancing.

1. Patong Beach is the most popular in Phuket, with a 3 kilometers long beach and an array of hotels, restaurants, shopping, and storied nightlife . Patong is big and pulses with dynamic energy.

2. Kata Beach is one of the most visited beaches, and for good reason. Get your Instagram ready for the sandy bays, intense blue seas, and the famous island in the middle of the ocean. Kata beach is about 2 kilometres long, but the Club Med Resort claims about 1.5 kilometers of the beachfront.

3. Karon Beach is one of the longest beaches in Phuket, with a stunning 3 kilometers of white sand. Karon has numerous hotels, quality dining, and exciting nightlife. If you want the excitement of Patong but with fewer crowds, Karon is for you.

4. Bang Tao Beach is situated halfway between Phuket International Airport and Patong beach on the island’s west coast. Bang Tao hosts some of the island’s most lavish resorts: Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket, SAii Laguna Phuket Resort, Banyan Tree Resort, and Angsana Phuket Resort, to name a few. Bang Tao has something for everyone, with numerous restaurants and beach clubs.

5. Nai Yang Beach is off the beaten path and hosts a variety of small bars and restaurants guaranteed to help you unwind. A favorite of locals and tourists alike.

6. Mai Khao Beach is part of the Sirinath National Park and the longest beach in Phuket. Its northern location protects this beach from the crowds. You could walk 11 kilometers and maybe pass two locals on your way. Resorts are available on the beach.

7. Nai Harn Beach is a gem of a beach tucked between small mountains and tiny islands at the very south of Phuket. More relaxed than the west coast beaches, Nai Harn’s bay is a gre at place to anchor for the day and explore the many restaurants and shops at your own pace.

Phuket Thailand Dive Information

Situated 8 degrees north of the Equator, Phuket's warm tropical climate is tempered by cool easterly breezes from November to April, and by fresh westerly monsoon winds in summer months. Phuket Weather is good for scuba diving and liveaboards almost the whole year, but is better from November to May, with plenty of sunshine. Divers can expect a few wet and windy days during May - October, but it's normally quite sunny. The low summer holiday season can actually be a great time to go diving in Phuket, since you find less divers under water, and much lower hotel prices.

Phuket is the largest island in Thailand and well known as a tourism and diving destination. Just a short hop by jet from Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, and with daily connections to most major Asian cities, Phuket is ideally situated for a short Thailand diving vacation or a relaxing holiday. Time is GMT +7 hours, 1 hour behind Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia.

The Andaman Sea, separated from the Bay of Bengal by the Andaman-Nicobar Ridge, is part of the Indian Ocean. Thailand's Andaman coast extends for 870 km from the Surin Islands on Thailand's border with Burma to Tarutao National Park (setting of bordering Malaysia. Hundreds of islands are reached by boat from Phuket, many of them uninhabited and fringed with spectacular coral reefs. To see the real Thailand, get off the beaten track. You often won't find even a footprint on the beach.

Phuket is the center of all this beauty. From here we can arrange for you Diving Courses , an amazing Thailand Liveaboard Dive Safari or a variety of adventure tours. The Similan Islands national marine park, to the Northwest of Phuket, is one of the best scuba diving destinations in the world. Thailand Liveaboards, Phuket Day Trips and Overnight Tours are all available. Diving liveaboards into the remote Mergui Archipelago in Myanmar (Burma) are also becoming more popular.

Best of Thailand

The spectacular rock formations of Koh Phi Phi and Krabi are easily reached by dive boat or local ferry. The limestone karsts of Phang Nga bay should not be missed (including the famous James Bond Island), and are best seen on a kayak tour through the mangroves, or by hiring your own charter boat. A couple of hours North is Khao Sok National Park where jungle treks can be arranged. Islands close to Phuket, such as Koh Racha Yai, provide excellent local diving and great snorkeling in clear blue waters. Whether you are scuba diving, snorkeling, exploring or just relaxing and watching the sunset, you can find everything here in Phuket.

The West coast of Phuket island has some of the best beaches to be found anywhere in the world and during the sunny and dry November - May season, the water is calm, clear and warm. Each beach has its own style and distinctive points of interest. Some, like Patong, are hot spots for nightlife and dining, while others like Nai Yang and Nai Harn are quiet havens away from the bars and crowds. In between there are delightful places like Karon Beach that offer a balance of peaceful relaxation within close vicinity to all the fun and activity you could want.

The fringing coral reefs of the Phuket area include some of the best in the world and are home to over 100 reef fish species. There are more than 200 species of hard corals playing their part in building this incredible underwater ecosystem, and an undetermined number of soft coral species. Hundreds of species of pelagic (open water) fish find their home in the rich waters of Thailand, including Manta rays and the majestic Whaleshark. Best season for whale sharks is March - May, at dive sites such as Hin Daeng and Richelieu Rock, best reached by Thailand diving liveaboards from Phuket. The variety and abundance of reef fish in the Andaman Sea can sometimes be quite breathtaking.

Thailand is home to four species of Sea Turtle - green turtles, hawksbill, leatherback and olive ridleys, and there are turtle nesting sites in this area. Turtle releases take place every year around Songkran. Dolphins are often sighted by Thailand divers on liveaboards in the Similan Islands, Burma and close to Phuket, and there have even been encounters with killer whales (Orcas) and larger whales. The underwater reefs of the Andaman Sea in Thailand and Burma are a natural treasure that we can all help to preserve. We hope to see you for some fun sun scuba diving in Thailand soon.

Thailand, Myanmar & Indonesia's Best Diving Locations

The Thailand diving high season is from October to May. Many Thailand liveaboard schedules are online for the season 2023 - 2024. Our Phuket dive center is also open during low season for day trips and Diving Courses . Start planning your dive trip now! Liveaboard Diving in Thailand is as popular as ever - early booking is highly recommended, especially for the more popular boats, though you can sometimes find last minute trips. There are also several boats with trips into the remote Mergui Archipelago in Burma (Myanmar).

Indonesia (Komodo and Raja Ampat) liveaboard schedules are also online right through 2023. Komodo is the best place to dive during the summer May - October. Raja Ampat is the best Indonesia option from November - April. If you are looking for a liveaboard in Thailand, Burma or Indonesia, we hope to hear from you soon!

Thailand Diving Packages

Holiday resort options.

dive trips thailand

Thailand is considered by many to provide the ideal Asian holiday. Beautiful beaches, excellent resorts and the warm welcome of the people who live in the 'Land of Smiles'. As a scuba diver, you too can enjoy a wonderful resort stay in Thailand with the added bonus that there are some wonderful underwater encounters awaiting you within minutes of your balcony.

There are so many daytrip operators and very few dedicated dive resorts in Thailand. Therefore we recommend you combine a resort or hotel stay with a number of daytrip diving options, chosen to suit your needs.

Select a resort area for information on diving and accommodation packages, suitable for all budgets:

•  Dive Phuket resort packages

The best diving in Thailand is on the west coast, lapped by the Andaman Sea. Phuket is the best-known destination here with the greatest infrastructure and nightlife in the area. Many daytrip boats take resort guests from Phuket to the numerous excellent dive sites of the area; these daytrips run all year round. People staying in Phuket resorts can dive almost anywhere in the region without having to travel far overland. This includes Racha Noi, Shark Point, Kingcruiser wreck, Phi Phi and the Similan Islands - all you'd expect from the most popular island for scuba diving in Thailand. Read more about diving in Phuket .

•  Khao Lak resort diving packages

Explore the best Thailand diving sites with the convenience of this near-by, tranquil beach area. Not far from Phuket, Khao Lak is another option and is better suited to those who prefer more peace and quiet than the action of places like Patong in Phuket. Khao Lak is the closest resort option to the Similan islands, so daytrips from here tend to focus more on the Khao Lak and Similan region than dive sites further south. These daytrips run from November to April. Dazzling underwater scenery, incredible diversity, whale sharks and manta rays all await you. Read more about diving in Khao Lak .

•  Phi Phi Islands scuba resort packages

Manta rays at Hin Daeng, Kingcruiser Wreck and Shark Point, and some terrific local soft coral wall dives - is what Phi Phi is all about. Discover Thailand's best wall diving on year-round day trips from these stunningly beautiful islands.

•  Ao Nang dive and resort packages - Krabi

The Krabi dive sites , Phi Phi Islands, Kingcruiser Wreck and Shark Point; Explore Krabi's rugged and spectacular coastline from the laid back atmosphere and unspoilt charm at Ao Nang Beach. Daytrips run all year round.

•  Koh Samui diving and resort packages

Dive Koh Samui and discover the best sites in the Gulf of Thailand with day trips from your resort on the Coconut Island. When it's low season on the west coast, May to October, Koh Samui represents one of the best options in the Gulf for some great scuba diving and a strong chance of encountering whale sharks. Samui daytrips run all year round.

• Koh Tao dive resort packages

The island is a huge draw for travellers who come here for the convenience of the dive sites and the famously low prices. Life here is entirely geared towards diving and you can join morning or afternoon day trips. There are more than 25 local Koh Tao dive sites , which include some advanced sites such as Chumphon Pinnacle, where you can encounter bigger fish and whale sharks, and the wrecks of HMS Sattakut and MY Trident. Whale sharks are often spotted in the Gulf, especially in March and April, and again in September and October.

Hotels, Resorts, Guesthouses in Thailand

Pakasai Resort in Ao Nang - Krabi

In each of our resort diving destinations we divide our accommodation recommendations between high, medium and low budget, always selecting options which are conveniently located for your needs. High budget choices are normally 4 star resorts with swimming pools, gyms, saunas and a wide range of other facilities, often with a choice of accommodation. Our medium budget recommendations are normally 3 star hotels with a good range of facilities and offer good value for money. In the lower budget category we recommend good quality, but inexpensive, hotels and guesthouses which may also include facilities such as a swimming pool and internet.

Our affiliated hotel reservation agents hotelscombined.com have a wide variety of diver-friendly accommodations throughout Thailand. Browse their website choices, use their on-line chat to ask your questions, and simply use your credit card to make your reservation.

Or use this search box directly to find options that match your requirements:

Take your pick from dozens of options, from top-of-the range international beach resorts to budget guesthouses or backpacker inns - and everything in between. There's something to suit everyone's taste and pocket.

And you can be sure that whatever option you go for, it will be backed up with their 'Low Price Guarantee' to ensure you get top-dollar value for money when you're scuba diving in Thailand.

Getting There

Most visitors from overseas fly into Bangkok before connecting with an internal flight to their chosen destination, however there are several international airports in Thailand such as Phuket, Koh Samui and Krabi. Visit our Thailand tourist information for further details on how to get there.
