If you’re not riding, be a part of it by supporting the thousands of bike riders at key supporter points when the race happens this Sunday, 10 October 2021. Find out more about spectating this year’s Cape Town Cycle Tour here .

WATCH THE RACE ONLINE + ROAD CLOSURES

The race will be broadcast live between 6am - 12:30pm on Sunday, 10 October 2021, on the  The Cape Town Cycle Tour Facebook page . If you are going to be out and about, here’s how to avoid the road closures .

COVID-19 SAFETY FOR PARTICIPANTS

Due to Covid-19 protocols and safety measures, all cyclists need to be fully vaccinated or able to undergo rapid antigen testing. Participants who are fully vaccinated, need to bring their proof of vaccination card and ID. Those who are unvaccinated, will need to undergo an antigen test, which costs R250.

WHERE TO WATCH AND WHAT TO DO

Edinburgh Drive Edinburgh Drive also known as Wynberg Hill is an early test of the riders’ mettle because of its steep gradient. Your support will be most welcome, especially to those who at that point feel that they may not have trained enough for the race. Getting There: It’s a pretty long slog but you can catch a train to Plumstead and walk to the top. Alternatively, you can drive there and find roadside parking, or park in the lot opposite Victoria Hospital. Glencairn Beach This is a flatter part of the route where racers normally maintain a quick pace. Watch them zoom by and spur on those who may still be feeling flustered after Edinburgh Drive. If it’s a scorcher outside, you can head down over the train tracks to take a dip in the tidal pool . Getting There: Road closures rule out using your car to get here. Instead, grab a train to Glencairn Station and make a day of it. Simon’s Town It’s a pretty hectic slog along this section and, depending on the time you’re there, most riders will be going pretty slow, some may even be struggling. Help them along with words of encouragement and maybe even a cold Coke (although there is a water point in the vicinity). While you’re there, why not set some time aside to explore Simonstown. Getting There: As with Glencairn, driving here is out of the question, but a select amount of trains go all the way to Simonstown. Noordhoek With the biggest test lying just ahead (Chapman’s Peak) every rider will be a little nervous heading through this section, especially beginners who have no idea what they’re getting into. A little “you can do it” will go a long way to give them the motivation to take on the challenge. If you get tired of cheering the cyclists on why not head to  Noordhoek Farm Village which is home to the famous Cafe Roux .

Getting There: With no train station and no escape from road closures, this vantage point is best saved for those within walking distance of Noordhoek's main road. Hout Bay: Tired, but relieved cyclists will be coming through the Hout Bay area after mastering the gruelling Chapman’s Peak. The experienced ones will know what lies ahead, the inexperienced may only have heard the legends. You can head to the Bay Harbour Market for a break between clapping. Getting There: If you’re a smart driver and use the open sections of the M4 and M3, you can find and access a good viewing point with your car, especially if you live nearby. Suikerbossie This is what lies ahead of Hout Bay. It’s neither steep nor long, but Suikerbossie has become a legend along this route because most riders are spent after what came before. Your support is probably most needed here. It’s close to the final stretch, so a little reminder of this could provide some motivation.

Getting There: Strictly for those who live close by.

Sea Point The final stretch: jubilant riders will only be thinking about the finish line. They may or may not need your support anymore, but it’s satisfying to see them flying along after the long and hard route is done and dusted. You can do this while having a drink and a bite to eat at Strolla Restaurant and Bar.

A CHANCE TO RACE AFTER ENTRY HAS:  HOW TO SUBSTITUTE If you miss out on an entry, your other option is to substitute another rider. It’s important to do this properly because if you don’t, you and the rider you’re substituting for can be banned from entering again.

Packing Your Bike This isn’t as simple as it looks. Here are some pointers on getting your bike into a box or bag:

Turn the handlebars parallel to the frame This is to make the bike streamlined enough to fit into a regulation bike bag or box. You can also remove the handlebars to make it fit, but that creates extra admin when you arrive and can mess up your bike fit.

Lower the saddle This will ensure that the bike fits the height dimensions of a standard box or bag. You may want to go for a quick bike fitting when you get to Cape Town to get the saddle height perfect again. Remove the pedals Like turning the handles, removing the pedals is for width reasons. Deflate your tyres Fluctuating air pressure levels in plane cabins can make tyres gain pressure, this causes tyre burst and pinched flats mid-flight. Letting out some air helps to avoid that. Place the bike in a bag, box If you follow the procedure above, your bike should fit perfectly into your bike bag or box.

What can be checked in as luggage If you’re bringing all your own stuff, you’ll need to know what you can and can’t check into luggage. Here are the regulations commonly used by airlines.

  • Inflation pumps filled with division 2.2 carbon dioxide non-flammable gas will be accepted for transportation as checked baggage only. Make sure you declare this when checking in for your flight.
  • Wheel bags cannot be carried as hand luggage and need to be checked in as checked baggage. The standard checked baggage allowance will apply.
  • If you do have more baggage than you are allowed, you can pay for the extra baggage beforehand or at the airport.
  • Spare wheels need to be packed properly before they are checked in. At check-in, the spare wheels will be tagged with a limited release tag.
  • Speedometers and any other electronic equipment, as well as helmets and shoes, can be taken on as hand luggage.

Elite Race Preview: Who Will Win the 2024 CT Cycle Tour?

The elite riders are racing to establish or expand a legacy this year.

cape town cycle tour broadcast

The 2024 Cape Town Cycle Tour will once again be more than just a bicycle race around the world’s most beautiful city. For the majority of the 27,500 competitors taking on the 109-kilometre course, it will be a celebration of health, friendship, and fellowship—an annual fun ride along a spectacularly scenic route. But then there are those for whom the Cape Town Cycle Tour is far more important —the elite racers who seek to join the pantheon of greats who have won the illustrious title before.

Victory on the second weekend in March is one of the few ways for cyclists to step out of the insular industry and into the greater South African sporting limelight. The race made household names of Hennie Wentzel, Ertjies Bezuidenhout, Willie Engelbrecht, and Cathy Carstens in its early years. More recently, Robbie Hunter, Anriette Schoeman, Cherise Willeit, Kim le Court, and of course, Nolan Hoffman, have gained fame through victory.

In 2024, the elite men’s race can be billed as a battle for legacy, while the elite women’s race will see a first-time winner. For the men, the surprise success of Chris Jooste in 2023 will probably impact how the race is controlled. Jooste, along with Andries Nigrini, Jaedon Terlouw, and Daniel Loubser, made a breakaway stick, holding off the peloton of favourites by a slender 7 seconds. Lightning is unlikely to strike from a break for the third time in successive years, but cycling can also be a strange sport, and if the favourites’ teams are represented in a break, the race could see an unlikely winner once more.

The more likely scenario is that Hoffman, at 38 years of age, will do his utmost to win a record-equalling fifth title. However, it has been three years since his fourth victory in October 2021 when the race was rescheduled due to the Covid Pandemic, and the veteran racer’s younger rivals may have an edge over him now. The foremost of these is the 2022 Cape Town Cycle Tour winner, Marc Pritzen. The Honeycomb rider also has a formidable team to support his efforts with Tristan Nortje, who was second in the road race at the South African National Championships a month ago. If Honeycomb can help Pritzen to victory, the 24-year-old will take a major step towards becoming the standard-bearer for this decade’s star riders at the Cape Town Cycle Tour.

Pritzen’s 2022 win came from a powerful early break, which was able to remain clear, partly because of their strength and partly due to the wet weather. One suspects that Honeycomb will have to exploit the blustery conditions predicted to enable Pritzen to take a reduced group to the line. He will have to be cautious of the makeup of that group, however. The 2022 runner-up Sascha Weber could well still be smarting for revenge, while Alan Hatherly and Namibian Road Champion Alex Miller are two men who will be tough to beat in a reduced group sprint.

Under-23 talent Tyler Lange – whose father Malcolm Lange won the race three times between 1998 and 2010 – is also a rider to watch. As is the 2023 runner-up Terlouw, who like Jooste and his RKC Collective teammate Kent Main, will be searching for a spot in a dangerous group that may surprise the favourites. The inaugural Under 17 race winner, Nicky van der Merwe, steps up to the full distance this year and is, along with Travis Rademan-Ludeke, confident of upsetting the more established Cape Town Cycle Tour campaigners.

In the elite women’s race, the absence of four of last year’s top five due to international racing commitments has created an opportunity for a new winner to step up. Since the move to a separate elite women’s race in 2018, which starts in Fish Hoek and takes in the final 78 kilometres of the normal route, only Willeit and Le Court have won the Cape Town Cycle Tour. Now Vera Looser, Carla Oberholzer, and Tiffany Keep have a great opportunity to write their names in the history books.

The Namibian Road Champion, Looser, has the best previous results of the trio. In 2023, she was pipped to the line by Le Court. Oberholzer is riding high on confidence following a sprint victory for the South African Champion’s title and will be tough to beat. Keep has matured in leaps and bounds as a rider and now races for the DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK Continental Cycling Team. In 2019, Keep was arguably the strongest rider in the race, but paid for spending too much time on the attack. Five years later, she will know to reserve her efforts for key moments.

Looser, Oberholzer, and Keep will not have it all their own way, however. Iranian mountain bike champion Faranak Partoazar makes her Cape Town Cycle Tour debut for the Pump for Peace team, while Customized Cycling Pirtek will have options in the form of Kelsey van Schoor and Melissa Kretzinger. Perennial challenger, S’annara Grove, could upset the favourites, as could the freshly crowned South African Junior Road Race Champion, Errin Mackridge.

To watch the racing action, tune in to the live broadcast on the Cape Town Cycle Tour website,  capetowncycletour.com , from 06:00 on Sunday, 10 March. Regular updates from the course can also be found at @CTCycleTour  on Twitter, while the  @ctcycletour  Instagram and  Cape Town Cycle Tour Facebook pages will share highlights throughout the day.

10 reasons you need to enter the Cape Town Cycle Tour

cycle tour

On the second Sunday in March each year, thousands of cyclists hit the roads of Africa’s most beautiful city for the biggest social occasion in Lycra. The Cape Town Cycle Tour will be held for the 46th time in 2024. It now boasts two events: the classic 109km route around the peninsula and the 42km route that was introduced in 2023 to encourage a new band of cycling brothers and sisters to join the ranks of Cycle Tour finishers. Here’s a reminder of why you should do it!

Also read:  Team SPCA cyclists raised over R175 000 in the Cape Town Cycle Tour

Fully closed roads

The only cars you will find on the route are official event vehicles, so you can really enjoy every kilometre without worrying about big tin cans and their distracted drivers.

You won’t be alone

Cape Town is already South Africa’s cycling city, but on Cycle Tour Sunday, bicycles really do rule and with thousands rolling, you won’t have a moment of loneliness.

Eat, drink and be merry

There are 12 fabulously stocked refreshment stations on the route, powered by Coca-Cola, Powerade, and water, and a friendly massage therapist or two to keep your motor running.

Cape {town} Etc discount:  Looking for things to do in the city at half the price? Let these great offers inspire you and fuel your imagination! Get them   here .

Make history

Be a part of the ongoing history of the Cycle Tour. There are two riders who have ridden every single one, including the inaugural event in 1978, but there are categories and jerseys for 10-time, 21-time, 30-time and 40-time finishers too; long-term goals rock!

It’s so pretty!

The Cape is spectacular in late summer; from the Blue Flag beaches to the cooling forests, the world-famous Table Mountain and the myriad of heritage sites along the way, there’s always something to distract from the effort.

Suikerbossie…

Yes, indeed, the most feared climb on the entire route, the mile-long sufferfest out of Hout Bay, is a mighty good reason to enter. It’s the final hurdle on the route and is lined with spectators urging, pushing, massaging and cajoling – an unmissable passage you will remember forever.

Measure yourself

The Cape Town Cycle Tour ranks as one of the biggest timed races in the world; every finisher gets a time and a position, so you can see where you stand in any one of your cycling or friendship circles.

And measure again…

If you’ve ridden it before, here’s your chance to see if you’ve been good with your training. The Cycle Tour keeps records of every single finish of every rider for each of the 45 events to date. Maybe your dad rode it in 1979; did you beat him?

Ride for a charity

The Cycle Tour raises millions for charity for its two beneficiaries, the Pedal Power Association and the Rotary Club of Claremont, but you can also ride for your own charity or join one of the many charity groups that block-book entries and ride together to raise funds and awareness on this glorious day.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour – for all the reasons above and more – is totally Instagrammable, so fire up your social media apps and remember to hashtag #ctcycletour as you make the world jealous of your grand adventure.

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde says the City is ready for the influx of local and international cyclists participating in the annual Cape Town Cycle Tour today.

The Premier has described the cycle race as an amazing economic driver, injecting millions of rands into the City of Cape Town’s economy.

The Cycle Tour is well-known for its scenic and challenging 109-kilometre route around the Cape Peninsula.

Winde says road closures may inconvenience the public.

“It is an amazing economic drive and an amazing event. Something that I also want to say is well done to everyone who has entered, I wish you the best of luck.”

“Also, for the citizens of Cape Town, especially those around the route as their homes get blocked and businesses get blocked on this one day of the year where they cannot get in and out but they know it is good for the City. So thank you very much for your tolerance.”

A cost-effective pollution solution on Cape Cod could start in the bathroom.

This story was co-published with WBUR in Boston and produced with assistance from the Pulitzer Center . Read WBUR’s coverage of efforts to improve Cape Cod’s water pollution , including the “ pee-cycling ” project in Falmouth. And check out a documentary short exploring these issues that was co-produced by WBUR and Scientific American .

Rachel Feltman: Last year Massachusetts passed new regulations forcing Cape Cod communities to clean up wastewater pollution, much of which is coming from people’s homes. As a result, towns on the cape are spending hundreds of millions of dollars to install sewers and upgrade septic systems.

But what if there was a cheaper solution? Some say there is: it’s called urine diversion, or “pee-cycling.”

For Science Quickly , I’m Rachel Feltman. You’re listening to the final episode of our three-part Fascination series on Cape Cod’s water pollution. We’re calling this episode “Liquid Gold.” This week, WBUR’s Barbara Moran is taking us to Falmouth, Massachusetts.

[CLIP: Gravel crunches underfoot]

Earle Barnhart: Hello!

Barbara Moran (tape): Hi, I’m Barbara. Nice to meet you.

Barnhart: Hi, thank you.

Moran (tape): This is amazing!

Barnhart: Oh, thank you.

Moran: Earle Barnhart lives in a beautiful house in Falmouth with his wife, Hilda Maingay. There’s a huge vegetable garden and fruit trees.

Moran (tape): Oh, there’s chickens!

Barnhart: Oh, it’s like a country club for the chickens [laughs].

Moran: But I’m not here to see the chickens. I’m here to see the bathroom—because Earle and Hilda are known on Cape Cod as the “power couple of pee-cycling.”

[CLIP: “We Are Giants,” by Silver Maple ]

Yes, they recycle their urine. All those luscious vegetables are grown on what Earle calls liquid gold.

Barnhart: In nature you have plants and animals, and the animals eat the plants, and the waste from the animals go back to the plants, and the nutrients go round and round. Humans don’t do that at all.

Moran: What most humans on Cape Cod do is use septic tanks. So all those nutrients leach into local bays and ponds, where they feed algae and invasive plants. The algae and plants grow out of control, sucking up oxygen in the water, killing fish and turning the bottom to muck.

To solve that problem Falmouth had a plan.

Barnhart: Falmouth, our town, was gonna spend $600 million over 40 years and build as many sewers as they could in that time. And that’s a huge amount of money for a town of 30,000 people. So we started studying alternatives to sewers.

Moran: Earle and Hilda’s research led them to the Rich Earth Institute , a Vermont nonprofit that studies urine diversion.

They learned that about 80 percent of the nitrogen in wastewater comes from urine ...

Barnhart: And that if you could divert the urine only, you could divert 80 percent of the nitrogen that’s causing the trouble.

Moran: So they did: they bought urine-diverting toilets for their home. And Hilda is gonna show me one.

Moran (tape): Okay, okay, so here we are in the bathroom. It looks like a normal toilet.

Hilda Maingay: Exactly.

Moran (tape): So then you sit on it, and sort of the chute opens in the back, and that’s where the poo goes—I see. And then there’s, like, a little chute ...

Maingay: For the urine in the front. It never fails.

Moran: Never fails? I went back to find out.

Moran (tape): Gonna shut the door here. Okay, I am actually going to use this toilet. Spoiler: I am not going to tape this. But I will give a report back after. Stand by for the report.

[CLIP: “Sorvete de Limão,” by Martin Landström ]

Moran (tape): Okay, well, overall that was pretty anticlimactic. So I just peed. The pee went down where it was supposed to go, and that was that.

Moran: The pee goes into a tank in the basement, and Hilda and Earle use it in their garden as fertilizer. And they’re not the only ones who consider urine to be precious liquid gold.

Brian Baumgaertel: I would argue that wastewater is a resource. You know, here in the United States we’re not very good at reusing this resource, but in other parts of the world it’s something that they wouldn’t waste.

Moran: Remember Brian Baumgaertel? He’s the director of the Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center. And his group is doing a whole research project on pee-cycling. He says we’re thinking about wastewater all wrong.

Baumgaertel: Yes, it’s got stuff in it that we don’t necessarily like because it might make us sick. But nitrogen is one of the things that we utilize for fertilizer.

Moran: And that matters because fertilizer production is a climate problem.

[CLIP: “Working It Out,” by Jan Björk ]

Moran: Making synthetic nitrogen fertilizer requires so much fossil fuel that its carbon dioxide footprint is comparable to that of the U.K .

Using recycled urine for fertilizer instead could help curb the demand for the synthetic stuff.

Baumgaertel: So we’ve got a material that we’re sending down into the ground every day that’s a resource, and we’re wasting [it]. And in the past they would have been like, “What are you doing? What are you doing with that?” [Laughs] You know?

Moran: And there are other pros to pee-cycling.

It’s relatively cheap compared with sewers or advanced septic: it costs about $6,000 to install a fancy system like the one Earle and Hilda have. And if you don’t want to sprinkle your tinkle on your flower beds, getting your urine hauled away is pretty cheap.

Or for less than $100 you can get a portable urinal called a Cubie.

And people could start pee-cycling quickly, without having to wait decades for sewers.

Baumgaertel: You know, I think there’s a lot of advantages. I don’t know that it’s the sort of end solution for the wastewater problem. Maybe it is for some folks.

Moran: There are, of course, challenges. Cape Cod doesn’t have the infrastructure to recycle everyone’s urine yet—and there’s the “ick” factor to overcome.

But still, folks are interested. Earle and Hilda host regular open houses to teach people about pee-cycling. One day last fall more than a dozen people showed up.

Barnhart: Yeah, we’re gonna show you how our house is set up in two groups, and then we’ll come back out and talk some more.

Moran: A group follows Hilda into the bathroom and then downstairs to see the storage tanks. One guy on the tour, Rob Pacheco of Falmouth, thought it was interesting.

Rob Pacheco: I think that it’s something that we need to adopt the idea of, you know, in general. Just not sure of how to install everything [laughs].

Moran: Toby and Rich Stomberg were more enthusiastic. They have a house in Eastham, Massachusetts, a town that has the same water problems as the rest of the cape.

Toby Stomberg: And it’s such an amazing solution. So for us it’s just taking the time to get it going in our own home. And then if that sort of spreads to our neighbors, well, that would be really nice.

Rich Stomberg: I point out, too, that we have solar panels on our roof, and we got lots of money back from the state and government that really made it easy for us to do that.... And the government is not supporting this.

[CLIP: Theme music]

Moran: That might change—at least in Falmouth. The town is considering a urine-diversion pilot project for at least 50 homes. If the town decides to move forward with the project, it may be the first program of its kind in the country.

Feltman: That’s a wrap on our Fascination miniseries about Cape Cod’s yellow tide. If you’re in the mood for more deep dives and immersive science stories like this one, you’re in luck: new Fascinations will land in your podcast feed every Friday.

On Monday, as always, we’ll be back to get you up to speed on the latest science news. Until then, have a great weekend!
