kauai coffee plantation

A Visitors Guide to the Kauai Coffee Plantation

Like millions of people around the world, I start my day with a cup of coffee. For something I encounter on a daily basis,  I know surprisingly very little about it. What does it actually take to make a cup of coffee? I know you grind up coffee beans, add a little hot water, and presto you have a mug of instant pick me up. But I know there is so much more that goes into the process. So during our visit to Kauai, I decided to visit Kauai Coffee Plantation to learn more about what it actually takes to make a cup of java.

If you are also curious, here is what you should know before you visit the plantation:

The Largest Coffee Grower in the United States

You probably wouldn’t have guessed it but the tiny island of Kauai contains 3,100 acres of coffee growing land. With over 4 million coffee trees, Kauai Coffee is the largest coffee grower in the US.

A Self Guided Tour

When you arrive at Kauai Coffee Plantation, head around the left side of the building to begin a self-guided tour through coffee bean fields. The path is well marked with informative signs detailing the coffee making process before it circles back around to the gift shop where you started from. The tour starts with how a coffee plant is grown, then moves on to how it is harvested and then dried and roasted.

This is a Coffee Bean

kauai coffee bean

My only experience with coffee beans was crushing them up at the grocery store with one of those self-serve grinder machines. So if you’re like me, you probably wouldn’t recognize a coffee bean being grown before your eyes. Did you know the coffee bean is actually the seed of the coffee plant? The plant grows cherry-sized fruits that turn from green to red when they are ripe. Inside of these fruits are two coffee beans. Occasionally the two beans will have morphed into a single bean called a peaberry. A peaberry produces a sweet flavor used in specialized flavors of coffee.

Free Samples

Who doesn’t love free samples? After completing your self-guided tour head up on the deck for tastings of the entire line of 100% Hawaiian, estate-grown coffees from Kauai Coffee Plantation. There are probably around 20 different flavors to try. I wouldn’t recommend trying them all unless you want to be jittery for the rest of the day. Start with a classic like the Rooster Alarm. Next, try one made with peaberries and see if you can taste the difference. Then get wild with Hawaiian Chocolate Macadamia Nut.

Visit Kauai Coffee Plantation

Even if you don’t drink coffee, a visit to the Kauai Coffee Plantation should make it on your Kauai Itinerary. The plantation is beautiful and learning about the care that goes into growing coffee beans is fascinating.  If you are a coffee drinker, there is a feeling of great satisfaction walking through the rows of coffee plants, sipping on a cup of coffee made from the beans you are watching grow. It doesn’t get much fresher than that.

Chad can be summed up by his idea of a perfect day: Waking up early to watch the sunrise over the mountains, warm cup of coffee in hand then grabbing his camera and fly rod, hitting the trail to explore some uncharted territory followed by cold beers and campfire steaks. Chad is often joined on his adventures by his wife, Tori, and their dog, Kona.

⭐ RATING:  4.9 out of 5

This cozy cafe offers an intimate atmosphere with lots of seating, delicious pastries, and of course, delicious coffee. Their specialty drinks are made from organic coffee and locally-sourced ingredients.

They offer a variety of coffee creations, including several flavored lattes and mochas. We usually order a cup of Jo or a latte, both excellent. The flavors are bold, and the coffee is always freshly made.

We also highly recommend trying their breakfast options, such as bagels, croissants, and smoothie options. You won’t be disappointed!

This is by far the most fun coffee shop on Kauai. The owners, Jo and Beau, are delightful and are always happy to chat and make sure you have a great experience.

Eden Coffee offers a variety of hot and cold brewed coffees, as well as teas. They also have specialty espresso drinks, such as the “Hawaiian Dream,” with chocolate and mac nut.

While their menu is smaller than some of the other coffee shops on this list, it’s worth a visit.

We usually come here for their lattes, but if you are a cold brew fan, you will not be disappointed. Try the Eden freeze, a frosty creamy expresso blend, and you’ll thank us later.

Kona Coffee is known for its rich and smooth taste with a medium to full body, often described as having a nutty or chocolatey flavor. This coffee is grown in the mineral-rich volcanic soil of the Kona districts, which is ideal for cultivating coffee trees.

In contrast, Kauai Coffee is grown on the fertile soils of the island of Kauai, which is also rich in volcanic minerals but has a different climate and growing conditions that give it a distinct taste. Kauai Coffee is known for its bright and fruity flavor notes, balanced acidity, and smooth finish.

The Wrap Up

There you have it – the best places to get coffee in Kauai! No matter where you are on the island, finding a great cup of coffee is easy.

There’s something for everyone, from strong espresso drinks to smooth cold brews and unique favors.

These cafes offer plenty of delicious coffee alongside treats and snacks. So, if you’re ever in Kauai, check out one (or all!) of these great spots for some delicious coffee.

Mahalo for stopping by! Until next time, Aloha!

Free Coffee Farm Tour & Tasting at Kauai Coffee Company

' src=

  • 1 minute read

Though the Big Island grows Hawaii’s most renowned Kona coffee, Kauai is actually the home to the largest coffee farm in all of Hawaii and the US. Kauai produces approximately 60% of Hawaii’s total coffee crop. Kauai Coffee Company on the southern side of Kauai grows more than 4 million coffee trees over 3,100 acres.

From my visit at Kauai Coffee Company, I had to ask what the difference between Kona coffee and Kauai coffee. I was told that Kauai coffee tends to have more fruit notes and slightly less acidity. The company representative then gave me a wine comparison that further explained the difference – Kona coffee is like a Cabernet while Kauai coffee is more like a Merlot or Pinot Noir.

Kauai Coffee Company offers free, guided tours on a regular schedule. Check their website for the schedule . You’ll see harvesting and roasting equipment and, best of all, enjoy tasting the varieties that Kauai Coffee Company produces and roasts. Visiting and tasting is completely free . Though, if you are like us, after tasting some of the samples you’ll want to purchase Kauai-grown coffee to take back home.

Located in Kalaheo, Kauai Coffee Company is open every. For directions, see this map .

I recommend a short stop into Kauai Coffee Company and have listed it as one of the best free activities on Kauai .

I have been to Kona and found the coffee there to be very acidic, but fortunately I found Kauai Coffee in a Hawaiian themed store in Klamath Falls, Oregon. I love it!! It’s very smooth and has all the great taste of coffee without the bitterness. I am planning on visiting Kauai next time I go to Hawaii and I am definitely visiting this company while I am there.

As a vacation homeowner that usually posts on sites like HereStay and HomeAway, one of the common questions I get is how close I am to the nearest “coffee shops” or “cafe”. What’s this infatuation with coffee?

The Kauai Coffee company site states tours are now $20 per person

We’re not seeing that. We still see that they offer complimentary walking tours.

From their site :

COMPLIMENTARY WALKING TOUR Guided tours of our estate are available daily at 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4pm.

Walking tour signs identify the five different coffee varietals, as well as the entire coffee process from initial blossoming, through harvesting and processing, to the final roasting. No need to sign-up.

Where to Find the Best Coffee In Kauai

latteartedit_001

What is the first thing on your mind when you wake up in the morning? For some, it’s the plans you have in store for the day ahead. But for others, it's the taste of that first sip of coffee that always manages to tempt you out of bed.

When on holiday in Kauai , there’s nothing more satisfying than waking up on this island paradise, watching the sun rise, and brewing a fresh cup of coffee while you plan the exciting adventures you’ll be diving into during your stay.

You’ll be glad to hear that it’s not hard to find a great cup of coffee in Kauai, with the largest coffee farm in the U.S - the famed Kauai Coffee Estate - and plenty of other local Kauai coffee roasters dotted around the island.

The only coffee-related dilemma you’re likely to face while on the island is trying to figure out which Kauai coffee shop offers the best coffee on the island, and we feel there are worse problems to be had! So, we’ve tried to make it simple, offering our personal recommendations for where we feel are the best coffee shops in Kauai so that you won’t miss out during your stay.

Java Kai and Kai Bar - Kapaa and Kilauea

Java Kai is possibly one of the raddest coffee shops found in Kauai. With a motto of ‘drink coffee or die’, you know you’re dealing with some serious caffeine fanatics when buying from this local coffee shop.

The chain has two locations, the east side shop in Kapa'a , and the north side shop, Kai Bar, located in Kilauea, so you don’t have to venture far to get your Java Kai fix!

Both locations offer a bright and inviting atmosphere for those who want to stop for a coffee, or something more filling. The Java Kai menu offers not only hot and cold drinks, but also breakfast, lunch and dessert options for those who are tempted to indulge. Think fresh bagels and sandwiches, juicy salads, smoothie bowls and sweet pastries!

And for when the one cup of coffee just doesn’t cut it, you can purchase Java Kai’s hand-roasted coffee in-store and online . This way, you can indulge in a fresh coffee in your accommodation or even when you’re feeling nostalgic back at home, so you never have to forget the taste of some of the best coffee in Kauai.

Coffee Equipment

The Bread Co. - Hanalei

A locally owned and operated business in Hanalei on the north side of the island, The Hanalei Bread Company is a popular spot to grab a coffee for locals and tourists alike. The business is formed of an organic bakery and delightful coffee house, which share a rustic, charming cafe space located close to the beach in this small seaside town.

Often packed with visitors looking to grab a delicious cup of coffee and one of the company’s famous freshly baked goods, we highly recommend hanging around and grabbing a spot on your next visit to this local Kauai coffee shop.

The company is dedicated to growing fresh, organic produce which they take pride in serving to their customers. Their small organic farm, Zephyr Farms, was formed as a sister business of the company to grow fresh produce and greens used for its menu items.

The mouth-watering bites to eat that you’ll find on the menu includes classics like avocado on toast, moreish sandwiches and pastries. Of course, there are also plenty of hot and cold drinks on offer as well, including many coffee options that have been grown and harvested locally in Kauai.

Wake Up Coffee Bar - Hanalei

Also located in Hanalei, the Wake Up Coffee Bar is a vibrant and quirky cafe that you’ll want to add to your list of Kauai coffee shops to hit up when in the area. What most people love about this place is the decor; the walls are plastered with pictures and adorned with items that give off an authentic Hawaiian surfer vibe, radiating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for customers.

Wake Up Coffee Bar is located on Kuhio Highway, the main road through Hanalei, and is within easy reach of Hanalei Bay, which has one of the beaches in Kauai that we highly recommend stopping at during your stay.

The cafe is best known for its fancy bagels, but also offers other appetizing breakfast and lunch items alongside delicious Kauai coffee. You’ll be sure to get your caffeine kick, and more, on a visit to this lovely little spot.

Coffee Machine Filter

Trilogy - Kilauea

You’ll find Trilogy Coffee and Tea Bar on the north shore of the island in the heart of Kilauea. Offering high-quality coffee, a delicious range of teas and tasty treats, the coffee shop prides itself on its organic, raw, vegetarian and vegan offerings.

Stopping for a cup of coffee in the soothing atmosphere of this establishment is bound to leave you feeling relaxed. It’s known for the friendly baristas who are passionate about coffee, making it an ideal destination for coffee lovers and those who want a welcoming experience and a fresh cup of joe.

Trilogy’s menu items include nourishing and delicious options, with raw and organic main meals as well as vegan and vegetarian sweet treats, so you can dive into plenty of tasty options without feeling any guilt!

What makes Trilogy stand out the most is the option for online ordering. You can pre-order your favorite drinks to pick up from the cafe, or, purchase Trilogy’s signature coffees, bottled drinks and teas to enjoy even when you’re not in the area.

Little Fish Coffee - Koloa

An inviting stop-off point while exploring the island, Little Fish Coffee Shop is a fully outdoor coffee house, allowing customers to soak up some rays while indulging in its food and beverages that claim to make you feel as ‘happy as a fish’.

This cafe’s favorite and most famous item on the menu is its acai and yogurt bowls. Garnished with fresh fruit, nuts, granola and other tempting toppings, these healthy bowls are ideal for when you’re seeking a boost of energy before a day exploring the island.

You can find Little Fish Coffee on the south side of the island in Koloa, on the main Poipu Road. Located close to the popular Poipu beach, you can make a day of visiting this coffee shop by relaxing on the beach and venturing only a short walk away to grab a bite to eat and a hot or cold drink.

And finally, what we’re all here for, the coffee! This shop offers their own Fairtrade Little Fish coffee blend, which you can buy bags of to take away. This means you can enjoy some of the best Kauai in coffee when and wherever you are, but we think this is a coffee shop worth visiting when exploring the south shore.

Making Drip Coffee

Small Town Coffee - Kapaa

Nicknamed ‘the little red bus’ and located in the North Shore town of Kapaa, the Small Town Coffee Company has been open since 2004 and is known not only for its iconic appearance, but also its great atmosphere and even greater coffee, which puts it high on our list as one of the best coffee shops in Kauai.

Visitors can order their delicious drinks, pastries and other savory and sweet snacks at the old school bus, and sit just outside for a bit of people watching, perched under a parasol next to this buzzing curbside location.

When you’ve finished your coffee, head out and explore the rest of the area. Kapaa is one of the most popular tourist spots on the island, with plenty of local shops and delectable eateries to keep you busy during your visit

Pono Coffee and Bakery - Kapaa

Perfectly located on the edge of Kapaa Beach - one of Kauai’s most beautiful stretches of shoreline on the east of the Kauai - Pono Coffee and Bakery is the number one spot for those who cannot resist a freshly baked pastry.

The menu includes all your favorite sweet and savory goodies, including hot dogs, ham and cheese rolls, doughnuts, and scones. If you’re looking for something to pair with a hot cup of coffee, you won’t be short of options!

You can phone the shop and order what you want in advance if you’re strapped for time, but it’s nice to visit and have a browse of the drinks and food on offer and even ask for a personal recommendation if you’re unsure of what to order. The shop is small and humble, located in one of the loveliest parts of the island, and should definitely be added to your list if you’re in search of some of the best coffee in Kauai.

Latte Art

HA Coffee - Anahola

You’ll find HA Coffee tucked away in the Anahola marketplace. Known as ‘the gateway to the north shore’, you’ll find small local businesses and vendors thriving here and offering their customers some of the finest food, drink, crafts and entertainment in the area.

This is definitely a shop that specializes in coffee, whether you’re after a classic cappuccino or something more specialist like a cold brew. If coffee isn’t your cup of tea (so to speak) then never fear, as there are plenty of other hot and cold drinks on offer including tea, lemonade and hot chocolate.

If it’s just a bite to eat you’re looking for, HA Coffee also delivers. There are acai bowls, sandwiches and bagels on the menu every day, which you can enjoy as you stroll around the other market stalls or take with you as a picnic.

You’ll also be able to bag yourself some coffee to take away, which is a great way of supporting this local business. With a range of different whole beans on offer, if you fall in love with one of the blends you won’t have to worry about parting with it at the end of your vacation.

When trying to decide on the best coffee in Kauai, these Kauai coffee shops and stores are our personal favorite spots that we would recommend to anyone who wants to experience some of the best coffee on the island. Whether you’re looking to refuel after a day of exploration, need to wake up in the morning to plan the day ahead, or just want to enjoy a half-hour with a book in a local cafe, these Kauai coffee shops won’t disappoint.

If you want to visit Kauai to indulge in the delicious coffee that the island has on offer, Pure Kauai offers an impressive range of rental properties that you can stay at which will make your stay extra special. For more information, please contact us here .

This tour was so enjoyable! One of the best ever! Mason was our guide and not only was he incredibly witty and personable, but was so knowledgeable of the workings of the farm as well as all of the trees, fruits, and the making of cocoa into craft chocolate. The fruit and chocolate tastings were beyond generous and truly gave us an new appreciation of craft chocolate versus candy.

Henry was our tour guide and was energetic, informative, organized and professional. On the farm tour he taught about about the plants, trees, shrubs, and weeds- their importance and usefulness on the farm. Getting to taste farm grown fruits, their chocolate, and those from around the world built true appreciation for the process, quality, and challenges they face. The chocolate was divine and worth savoring.

Lydgate Farms tour was a fascinating experience! We learned so much from Henry our guide about regenerative farming. We tasted seven kinds of tropical fruits that were amazing and we had 10 kinds of chocolate!!! It’s worth every penny and we absolutely will be back again!

This has to be one of our favorite tours of all the islands and we have been to them all!! We had Jake as a tour guide. He was hell bent on making sure we knew how the Cacau beans were grown and processed versus the companies that do not grow Cacau on the islands. He was fantastic in his knowledge and desire to educate us on the history and production of the great Lydgate Farms products!! We will be back !! We had numerous samples of chocolate !!! Well worth the cost of the tour!!

This may seem like an odd tour to take on Kaua'i; however, you will not be disappointed. We learned not only a great deal about growing cacao in Kaua'i but also about the chocolate industry in general. We were also treated to many tastings from tropical fruits to cacao itself. We highly recommend this tour.

Our third wonderful time spent enjoying the farm, the fruit, and of course the chocolate at Lydgate. Our guide this time was Mel, a knowledgeable and thoroughly delightful young lady who instantly turned the entire group of “guests” into her good friends, sharing history, technical insights into chocolate and organic farming as well as fun and insight stories about herself, the farm, and their products. Informative, great fun, and a really great way to spend a few hours immersed in the joy of Kauai!

Sorry but this should be 10 STARS! Place was fabulous. We learned a lot about chocolate that we never knew before. One of the highlights was our guide Jackson. He was funny (Very funny actually) and informative. (Very informative actually.). I highly recommend this tour. It’s one of the best we’ve been on on the island of Kauai.

This tour exceeded my expectations. Our guide was very informative and made the experience a lot of fun. I learned a lot about how chocolate is produced commercially, as well as the different types, grades and tastes of chocolate. As a result, have become much more selective when it comes to purchasing chocolate. Their dark chocolate macadamia nuts and the rum chocolate bar are divine! Highly recommend this tour.

This was probably the best tour we did while on Kauai! We thought it would be fun but had no idea how much fun and how much we would learn! Mason was a fantastic guide and the fact he is also one of the farmers and lives on the farm made it even better! We got to try all sorts of tropical fruits and then when we got to the chocolate tasting portion, it was truly an experience. And educational. Highly recommend this tour!

Hands down a can’t miss experience. The tour is incredibly informative about not only chocolate but other plants and fruits that grow on the farm as well. You get to try chocolate in every step of their process from start to finish and enjoy many other in-season fruits from the land. All in all such a cool (and incredibly tasty) experience, highly recommend.

Gosh our guide, the farm and the chocolate made the experience.!!!! I didn't catch our guides name, but we went on Monday May 29th from 11am-2pm. He was so passionate and knowledgeable about the farm, chocolate, honey, vanilla, trees, Mr. Lydgate. He made the experience so special. It was a lot of Chocolate, very generous and well done. The stations were fun and educational. I live here on the South Shore and will tell everyone at my restaurant, Cabana Bar & Grill @thecabanakauai! Thank you! A Hui Ho!

I had seen the Lydgate Chocolate Tour on Facebook. The reviews were all positive and the tour sounded good, so I signed up myself and 2 teen daughters. We all had a great time! It was fun and informative and the samples of fruit and chocolate were excellent! Jacob was an excellent tour guide. He possesses a passion for what he does and it shows! I highly recommend. Definitely a unique tour! Lydgate chocolate is to die for! Sooooooo good!

What a wonderful experience. We learned so much about chocolate and the farm. It was great! Our guide was very informative and entertaining. We snacked on very different fruits and learned about how they’re grown. We ate chocolate and chocolate and then chocolate. It was fantastic! When we got home we ordered through they’re website. It shipped fast, still tastes great! Highly recommend.

What a delightful deep dive into mindful experiences of both the experience of tasting chocolate but also the the fully engaged regenerative farming process. Lydgate Farm tour opened my eyes to the experience of chocolate from plant to bean to liquor to the 'food of the Gods' and opened my heart to the island wide regenerative farming to growing food for the island and the world. Good people solid family business.
