Things to consider before going on international cruises from Dubai

Check your seaworthiness.

The most important thing to consider is whether you are prone to seasickness. Try a yacht experience in Dubai first to get a taste of what life on the sea will be like. If you are queasy, avoiding a cruise holiday in Dubai is best.

Pick a Cruise with Activities you Like

Choose your cruise based on what activities you like to do. Some cruises are known for their water sports, some for live entertainment and others for their dining outlets.

Do your research on the cabin space. Some rooms can be tiny, so being claustrophobic will pose a problem.

Adequate Packing is a Must

Pack well. This won’t be similar to a backpacking trip. You might have to follow a dress code for certain events. Make sure you take swimming costumes, formal shoes and clothes medicines, and other things you may need during the cruise.

Pick an All-Inclusive Package

Choose the all-inclusive cruise packages from Dubai if possible. While the more inexpensive options may be tempting, the meals and activities will add up. In most cases, opting for the all-inclusive deal will be the more cost-efficient choice. Remember to check if tips are included in an all-inclusive package as well.

Consider your Budget

Look out for the best cruise deals from Dubai while planning your trip. If you prefer a shorter trip, you can opt for 2 to 3-day cruise packages from Dubai. This would typically cost under AED 1,000. Book in advance for longer cruises from Dubai to the USA and Australia for a better price.

Keep some Snacks and Sunscreen

Boarding can be a long and drawn-out process. So, if you feel peckish, carry a light snack and lather on the sunscreen.

If you are travelling to the city for your cruise trip, consider some hotels close to the Dubai airports for accommodation.

Cruise lines sailing from Dubai in 2022

There are eight cruise ships sailing roundtrip from Dubai during 2022, most of them on multiple itineraries for the winter season, while a further eight cruise ships will sail longer grand voyages and repositioning cruises during the year.

There were 118 cruise itineraries scheduled from Dubai for 2022 at the time of writing, 87 of which are roundtrip itineraries sailing in the Arabian Gulf. These 7- and 8-night cruises visit Abu Dhabi , the capital of the UAE, Muscat , the capital of Oman, and other smaller cruise ports such as Khasab in Musandam and the cruise beach at Sir Bani Yas Island .

The remaining cruises departing from Dubai in 2022 either sail east for Asia, or west for Europe, with one or two going further afield to North America or south to Africa or destinations in the Indian Ocean. Dubai sits astride the busy east-west sailing route between Europe and Asia, making it a popular turnaround option for cruise lines repositioning ships between the two regions. For the same reason, it is also regularly featured on the itineraries of cruise lines operating grand voyages within the Indian Ocean, or between Europe and Asia, or as a staging post on World Cruises that are sold in sections.

Roundtrip Dubai cruises

Roundtrip Dubai cruises in 2022 cover two cruise seasons (the 2021/22 season and the 2022/23 season), each of which runs from around November to March annually. During the current 2021/22 season, there are only four cruise lines homeporting in Dubai for the winter, a direct result of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The German cruise lines AIDA Cruises and TUI Cruises, and the Italian cruise lines MSC Cruises and Costa Cruises, are all long-term annual homeporting cruise companies in Dubai. In 2020, four additional lines were scheduled to cruise roundtrip from the city (Royal Caribbean, Pullmantur, P&O, and Celebrity Cruises), but the COVID-19 pandemic forced them and the rest of the industry to shut down operations through much of the year.

This impact on Dubai is expected to continue into the 2022/23 season, when only AIDA, TUI, MSC and Costa are scheduled to once more homeport in the city, but with bigger and newer ships, so it’s not all that bad. AIDA Cruises deployed its ship AIDAbella in Dubai for 2021/22, but for the 2022/23 cruise season, its new LNG mega ship AIDAcosma will homeport in the city. Similarly, MSC Cruises has upgraded from its already huge MSC Virtuosa, to the even larger MSC World Europa (the second-largest class of cruise ship in the world after Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class ships).

Roundtrip cruises from Dubai in 2022: AIDAbella (7-night cruises, departing every Saturday until April 2nd, 2022) MSC Virtuosa (7-night cruises, departing every Saturday until March 19th, 2022) Mein Schiff 6 (7-night cruises, departing every Monday until February 28th, 2022 – returning in November, 2022 to sail the same itineraries for the 2022/23 season) Costa Firenze (7-night cruises, departing every Friday until March 19th, 2022 – returning in November, 2022 to sail the same itineraries for the 2022/23 season) Europa (8-night roundtrip cruise on January 8th, followed by a 14-night cruise to Mauritius on January 26th) Azamara Quest (11-night cruise on November 15th, 2022, followed by a 14-night cruise to Singapore on November 26th, 2022) AIDAcosma (replaces AIDAbella for the 2022/23 cruise season, will sail 7-night cruises departing every Saturday from November 18th, 2022, until April 8th, 2023) MSC World Europa (replaces MSC Virtuosa for the 2022/23 cruise season, will sail 7-night cruises departing every Saturday from December 21st, 2022 until March 18th, 2023)

Grand voyages from Dubai

Dubai’s central location midway between Europe and Asia, with other popular cruise destinations such as Mumbai, the Maldives and the exotic islands of the Indian Ocean just a few days sailing away, makes it an ideal turnaround port for many cruise lines operating grand voyages.

Cruise lines to offer their grand voyages and world cruises either as an entire itinerary, or as a series of ‘legs’ that can be individually purchased. It’s these individual legs of longer grand voyages that feature Dubai as a turnaround port.

In 2022, there are six cruise ships scheduled to sail from Dubai on grand voyages. Europa of Hapag-Lloyd will cruise to Mauritius, Seven Seas Explorer will cruise to Singapore as part of its longer 73 night Istanbul to Auckland itinerary, Azamara Quest will cruise to Singapore, Nautica of Oceania will cruise to Cape Town, Seabourn Encore will sail a month long cruise to Hong Kong, and Silver Spirit will cross the Indian Ocean to Mumbai, India.

Grand voyages from Dubai in 2022 Europa (Dubai to Mauritius, 14-nights, departing January 26th, 2022) Seven Seas Explorer (Dubai to Singapore, 21 nights, departing October 31st, 2022) Azamara Quest (Dubai to Singapore, 14 nights, departing November 26th, 2022) Nautica (Dubai to Cape Town, 30 nights, departing December 7th, 2022) Seabourn Encore (Dubai to Hong Kong, 32 nights, departing December 7th, 2022) Silver Spirit (Dubai to Mumbai, 12 nights, departing December 8th, 2022)

Repositioning cruises from Dubai

Having several cruise ships homeporting in Dubai annually, or sailing one or two roundtrip cruises from the city during the winter cruise season, means that Dubai is also a departure port for these cruise ships repositioning cruises to Asia or the Mediterranean for their summer itineraries.

Repositioning cruises from Dubai in 2022 AIDAbella (Dubai to Palma, 19 nights, departing April 9th, 2022, and again on November 7th, Dubai to Thailand, 21 nights, departing November 7th, 2022 for her Asia season) Mein Schiff 6 (Dubai to Turkey, 15 nights, departing February 28th at the end of her 2021/22 Dubai season ) Costa Firenze (Dubai to Italy, 20 nights, departing March 19th at the end of her 2021/22 Dubai season ) MSC Virtuosa (Dubai to Italy, 19 nights, departing March 26th at the end of her 2021/22 Dubai season ) Mein Schiff 5 (Dubai to Singapore, 15 nights, departing November 22nd, 2022) (transitioning from her summer Med program to winter in Singapore) Norwegian Jade (Dubai to Cape Town, 19 nights, departing December 2nd, 2022) (transitioning from her summer Med program to follow the sun down to South Africa for December and January)

Dubai United Arab Emirates Cruise Port Guide

The lure of Dubai is irresistible, from its glittering mega-skyscrapers to its traditional Islamic roots. This enigmatic destination is recognized worldwide as a city pointed full throttle toward the future. Dubai is a must-experience city while on an India cruise . Dubai’s most iconic sights include the 160-story Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest skyscraper, and the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, a luxury resort which happens to be shaped like a boat’s sail.

Dubai is unlike any other place in the world, filled with luxe shopping and high-end boutiques, unique souqs (markets) scattered all over the city, and cultural institutions like the Dubai Museum. While you’re stopped on a Dubai cruise, you’re meant to live it up on unforgettable excursions like a helicopter tour of the city or a camel ride at the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. Not even differences in climate can stop Dubai from bringing you every experience you crave. There’s even an indoor skiing experience and the massive Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo.

Please Note: While we don't currently sail to Dubai, you can still discover the beauty of the region on one of our Asia cruises . Browse our cruises to Asia below.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to dubai, dubai museum.

Take an afternoon to explore history at the Dubai Museum, located within the Al Fahidi Fort, which is the oldest building in Dubai. Each gallery and exhibit showcases a recreation of life and society in Dubai from hundreds of years ago. It’s a must-do for history buffs, or for those who want to learn more about Dubai’s history as a global power.

Jumeirah Mosque

If you’re looking to visit a traditional Islamic mosque, head to Jumeirah Mosque, which is open to non-Muslims as well as Muslims. This landmark mosque stands out with clean white stone. Take a 75-minute guided tour of the mosque to learn about life and traditions of the mosque.

Palm Islands

When you cruise Dubai, take a day to explore the three man-made Palm Islands, called Palm Jumeirah, Deira Island, and Palm Jebel Ali, where families and solo travelers alike can enjoy the beach resorts, swim, snorkel, and dive. Waterparks and slides make it easy to cool off on a hot day, and you can even swim with dolphins on the islands.

Dubai Fountain

Don’t miss this classic local landmark, the ornate Dubai Fountain. Catch a choreographed performance of lights and music in the center of downtown. It’s also the largest fountain system in the world.

Learn More About Dubai Shore Excursions

Top things to do in dubai, shop at the dubai mall.

Over 1,000 shops call Dubai Mall home, so you could easily spend days here and still not see it all. From jewelry to luxe clothing items and a large food court for when you get hungry, the Dubai Mall lives up to its status as the 2nd largest mall in the world. Plus, you’ll find the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo and the Olympic-sized Dubai Ice Rink located within the mall, which makes this a perfect afternoon excursion for families and those who want to stay indoors on a sweltering Dubai day.

Head to the Top of the Burj Khalifa

The Burj Khalifa clocks in as the tallest skyscraper in the world, and in person it’s an immense sight. Purchase tickets for the incredible observation decks on the 124th or 148th floors, where you can take in a panoramic skyline of Dubai.

Adventure on a Desert Safari

Thrill seekers must head out on a desert safari while in Dubai. Ride through the red dunes on a car or bike or go camel riding in the desert. Or try sandboarding on the vast sands. Spend the night at a Bedouin camp and enjoy the desert and the traditional Bedouin setting in style on a shore excursion.

Scuba and Swim at Jumeirah Beach

Wreck diving is popular in Dubai, where remnants of shipwrecks litter the ocean floor. Divers will love Dubai’s adventurous seascape even though it doesn’t have active coral reefs. Cool off on a hot day with a dive or a swim on the Persian Gulf at Jumeirah Beach.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Dubai Cruise Port

Afternoon tea is a huge part of the culture in Dubai. Stop in for high tea at the Skyview Bar at the top of Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, where you can sip tea and enjoy fresh pastries while you watch the sun set over the skyline. Other dishes readily available on menus here include shawarma and falafel-based dishes. Locals regularly eat fresh seafood catches as well as lamb and mutton. Hummus is also a staple in the area. When you cruise Dubai, try another Emirati delicacy, al harees, which is a mix of wheat and meat with a porridge-like texture.

Culture & History of the Dubai Cruise Port

On cruises to Dubai, you’ll quickly discover that the history of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is rich, varied, and experiencing its very own renaissance. Humans have been living in the area that is now Dubai for thousands of years, but Dubai didn’t gain its cultural and economic prominence until the 18th and 19th centuries, when the city became the first port opening the area to trade. In the 1950s, oil was discovered and forever changed Dubai’s economy and its role in the global sphere. Since then, Dubai has steadily grown, becoming one of the most glamorous cities in history. Culturally, Dubai is greatly influenced by Islam, and during Ramadan, many restaurants and shops close to adhere to the holiday. Be sure to check to see if your Dubai cruise coincides with Ramadan during your time there.

Dubai Port Facilities & Location

Your Dubai cruise ship’s port of call is the Port of Rashid, which is equipped with state-of-the-art amenities like free wifi, currency exchange, a tourism information area, and plenty of souvenirs for you to bring back home when you return to the ship. You’ll see the Dubai skyline when you arrive at the Port of Rashid, and can depart the cruise port from a taxi or through a complimentary shuttle when you’re heading out on a shore excursion.

Transportation in Dubai

As the UAE’s most populated city, Dubai has no shortage of people buzzing around, trying to get from point A to point B. Dubai has an extensive metro and bus system that you can access by getting a Nol Card. You can simply buy a day pass while you’re stopped on cruises to Dubai. The taxi network in Dubai is enormous, too. Taxis have a different colored roof than other cars to signal what is a taxi and what isn’t. They’re also metered to make sure you get a decent fare. You can hail a taxi from the cruise port, but be sure to talk with your driver if you’re interested in booking a multi-stop ride or tour with them.

Shopping Near the Dubai Cruise Port

Dubai is a shopper’s paradise, ranging from the high end to bargain markets for every type of shopper. The Dubai Mall is the second largest mall in the world, so it’s easy to lose track of time perusing over 1,200 shops featuring clothing, antiques, and fine jewelry. Of course, Dubai’s revitalized downtown contains a variety of souks and marketplaces where you can purchase gold, spices, jewelry, handmade goods, and more.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

Dubai is part of the United Arab Emirates and the official currency there is called the Dirham (Dhs). You can haggle and bargain in souqs, or outdoor markets, but prices in department stores and boutiques tend to be fixed. Tipping is 10-15% of your surcharge at restaurants and bars, and you can round up to the nearest Dirham note when you’re tipping your taxi driver.

Woman half way into world's longest cruise shares the worst thing onboard the ship

Woman half way into world's longest cruise shares the worst thing onboard the ship

Life on a cruise ship for nine months is unique, at the very least.

Tom Earnshaw

Tom Earnshaw

A passenger on the world's longest cruise holiday has revealed the things that she dislikes the most about the excursion.

The average cruise ship holiday is going to take up a week or two of your year, with thousands every year taking to the open seas across the planet as a form of rest and recreation.

A particular crowd even opt for what are known as 'spicy' cruises , where they share partners with other passengers .

Well, as unique as a swingers' cruise might be , there's another kind of cruise that might take the biscuit.

We're on about Royal Caribbean's Ultimate World Cruise, which sails consistently around the world for nine months .

Lasting for 274 days, it takes thousands of passengers to the likes of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt and Sydney Harbour in Australia .

Royal Caribbean's 22-year-old ship, the Serenade of the Seas, is the vessel that is sailing around the globe almost consistently, with it having a capacity of 2,490 paying customers.

Now, one passenger half way through the current tour of the Ultimate World Cruise has revealed the things she thinks are the worst thing about the nine month venture.

Leah Bott is on the RC ship with her husband Steve, having set sail at the start of the year.

Leah Bott and her husband Steve (Royal Caribbean Blog)

Having a '10 out of 10' time on board Serenade, Leah said it was '100% worth it', and they have been able to do everything they wanted to.

That's included Royal Caribbean coming up with alternative plans when the weather has meant the original excursion plans have had to be scrapped.

"Missing out on Machu Picchu was a big disappointment. But the cultural locations we were able to explore in Cusco and the shows they set up for us in Lima were amazing last-minute substitutes," the American wrote over on royalcaribbeanblog.com.

"For me, the Ultimate World Cruise has been life changing. And I expect this will continue over the next four and a half months."

But there's been one main gripe with the ship itself, despite the good times that have been had. And I suppose after four and a half months at sea, your opinion gains a bit more credibility than those who only cruise for up to a fortnight or so.

Leah said: "If you are following any of the content creators on this ship, you have probably heard this complaint.

"The noise. Everywhere. All the time.

"I do love the layout of the Serenade. I only have one other ship to compare it to – the Adventure of the Seas.

Serenade of the Seas (Jeffrey Greenberg/Universal Images Group via Getty Images)

"But in my opinion, the design of the Serenade is much better. It’s too bad it doesn’t have a Flowrider [surf simulator], but that’s another issue.

"The one bad part about the Serenade design is the openness of the Centrum [the open middle point of the ship where everything comes together].

"The noise that reaches this area flows up from Deck 4 to 12. It is annoying and problematic."

13 things you should do before every cruise

Gene Sloan

You've booked your cruise. You've booked your flights. You've booked your pre- and post-cruise hotels. Now, it's just a matter of counting the days until your on-the-water adventure begins, right?

Well, not quite.

There are many (mostly) little things you still need to do before you begin your journey to the pier to board your ship.

From downloading your cruise line's app and using it to check in for your trip to signing up for ship-based activities in advance, here's our handy checklist of 13 things everyone should do before leaving home for a cruise vacation.

For more cruise guides, news and reviews, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Check in online

Yeah, I know, you were going to do this anyway. But, just in case you weren't: Know that it pays off big time to check in online before your cruise.

There's a lot of paperwork required to check in for a cruise, including (at many cruise lines) filling out documents asking for personal information such as your name, address, gender, date of birth, nationality and even pregnancy status; emergency contacts; and your pre- and post-cruise travel plans. You'll also be asked to set up an onboard account and submit a photo of yourself.

If you do this all in advance online — and many lines now require that you do — you'll be able to board your ship quicker than if you wait to do it at the pier.

Note that in most cases, you can check in online for a cruise many weeks in advance. At Royal Caribbean , the check-in window opens a full 45 days in advance of a sailing. At Carnival Cruise Line , check-in opens 14 days before departure.

Check your identification documents

cruise ship start from dubai

Long before you check in for your cruise, you should take a glance at whatever identification document you're going to use during the check-in process to make sure it hasn't expired — or is even close to expiring.

On many cruise itineraries, you will need a passport , and many countries that cruise lines visit require passports to be valid for at least six months beyond the date you plan to leave the country. Many countries also require at least two blank pages in your passport. If your passport is full of visa stamps, it's time to get a new one, even if it hasn't expired.

Download the cruise app

Many cruise lines now have apps you can download to your smartphone. The apps vary in capabilities, but many will show you a daily list of activities on your ship and everything you have reserved. Many also will let you make restaurant reservations and book shore excursions and other activities.

A few will let you order drinks and other items (think: pizza and beer) to be brought to wherever you happen to be standing. That's pretty cool, right? The best part: The apps will work on board even if you don't pay for a Wi-Fi package.

Some of the apps also will aid you with the check-in process. The Celebrity Cruises app, for instance, lets you check in for a cruise with relative ease. You'll even be able to submit the security photo the cruise line requires using the Celebrity app. The app also will show your Celebrity Xpress boarding pass, so there's no need to print one in advance of heading to the pier.

Print out your documents

In theory, you don't need to print your cruise boarding pass if you have it on your mobile device, but I still always do — and I recommend you do the same.

I always keep a hard copy of every travel document — including pages that show my itinerary and reservation numbers for related hotel stays and flights — in my carry-on bag.

There are several reasons to do this. One is that you never know when your mobile device will die or have a connectivity issue that results in the document you need not being available. But you might also encounter authorities — an immigration official at a border, for instance — who will want to see hard copies of your itinerary before allowing you to proceed.

Tell friends and family about your trip

It's always a good idea to let at least a few people close to you know you're leaving on a trip. Give them a rough outline of where you're going and tell them how to contact you in an emergency. This might seem like obvious advice, but a reminder never hurts.

I have forgotten to do this at times — and while it's never resulted in a crisis, it has gotten me in trouble with the family.

I found myself in the big-time doghouse in late 2020 with my 75-year-old, always-worries-when-I-travel mom after forgetting to tell her I was heading to Barbados at the last minute to report on the first Caribbean cruise after the COVID-19 crisis began. She only found out I was out of the country when one of her friends saw me on TV talking about how I was quarantined in my cabin on the ship due to an outbreak of the illness. You can imagine her reaction. Lesson learned.

Also: Call your mom.

Research ports in advance

cruise ship start from dubai

On some vacations — a beach trip, for instance — you don't have to do much research in advance. You just show up and figure out your days on the fly.

Most cruises aren't that way — at least if you want to get the most out of them. At the heart of most cruises are port calls that, in many cases, are short, often just a few hours. You want to have a plan for what to do in these ports, or you'll miss out on a big part of the cruising experience.

Once you know which ports you'll be visiting, do as much research as you can. You can read TPG's guides to the best excursions and activities in destinations like Alaska , the Caribbean and the Mediterranean .

Join a Facebook group for your cruise line

Another great place to get ideas for what to do in ports and on ships — and what to bring on a cruise, for that matter — are the many private Facebook groups dedicated to particular lines.

I belong to a number of them, including the Royal Caribbean Cruises group, the COPs (Cruisers Opinion Page) group and the Holland America Line Fans group. On these pages, you'll find thousands of cruise fans who often are only too willing to answer questions you might have about your upcoming trip. I've met some wonderful people in these groups, some of whom have become my longtime friends on Facebook.

Sign up for private tours in advance

Booking a shore excursion directly through your cruise line is easy. You check a box on an online form before sailing or while on board, and — poof — it's all arranged. But booking tours through your line isn't the only option, and it's not always the best choice.

In many cases, you can save a lot of money — and get a better touring experience — by booking shore excursions in advance through independent tour operators in ports or a tour booking service such as Viator or ToursByLocals .

Often, independent tours will be more intimate than the tours offered directly through cruise lines. They might go to the same sites but in a small van instead of a big motorcoach. You might have six or eight other people on a tour with you instead of nearly 40. If your traveling group is big enough, you might even book a private tour just for your friends and family with an independent tour operator.

Sign up for activities in advance

Some lines will let you sign up for shows, tours and other activities (including meals at specialty restaurants) before sailing using online portals. If you want to be sure you get a seat for a specific show on a specific night, or a specific tour or restaurant reservation time, it's a good idea to do this. It's common for popular shows, tours and restaurant reservation times to book up in advance.

If you don't sign up for activities in advance, a backup strategy is to do so just after you board a vessel — but I'm a big advocate of advance planning. You'll find it particularly pays off when sailing on a giant ship, such as Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas , where there are thousands of other passengers competing for restaurant reservations and show tickets.

Consider travel insurance

It's not always smooth seas when it comes to cruising or any other sort of travel. We hate to bring it up, but you might need to cancel your cruise in advance due to the sudden onset of an illness. Or, perhaps, you need emergency medical attention during your sailing. Maybe the flight to your ship gets canceled, and you miss the vessel's departure.

These sorts of things can happen to cruisers, and they're all situations where you might benefit from having travel insurance. Here's a comparison of the top travel insurance providers and information about cancel for any reason add-ons .

Pack wisely

cruise ship start from dubai

For starters, pack early ... and be strategic. Throw all the clothes you think you'll need on the cruise in a pile, then take away half of them. We promise you won't need them.

Most cruising these days is casual, and you only need a few outfits to rotate through a voyage. If things get dirty, no problem. Some ships have launderettes on cabin decks where you can run a load or two of laundry every few days. If not, you can send laundry out to be cleaned on board for a fee in most cases (you might even get this for free if you have status with a cruise line ).

The extra cost of doing a few loads of laundry on a ship is a small price to pay for the freedom of not having to lug a giant suitcase around as you travel to and from your ship. Plus, you'll want to save room in your suitcase for all the little treasures you'll find along the way.

Related: Everything you need to know about cruise ship laundry service

In addition to packing light, pack anything you think you might need for the first few hours of your cruise in your carry-on bag . This means things like medication and a phone charger, but also a bathing suit, a hat, sunscreen and other items that'll let you head straight to the pool deck to start the fun. A porter will likely take away your main bag as you arrive at the port, and you might not see it delivered to your cabin for several hours.

Put your phone in airplane mode

Some of the biggest cruise ship horror stories online are tales of cruising newbies who racked up thousands of dollars in cellphone charges while on ships.

This can happen when you leave your phone turned on and, say, watch videos on the internet. Many phone plans — even international plans — do not include talking, texting and data on cruise ships, and you'll pay exorbitant roaming rates for such services that'll show up weeks later on your phone bill.

You can find ways to make calls and access the internet from ships without spending a boatload of money. You can buy a Wi-Fi package, for instance, that'll let you make FaceTime calls and stream videos (on some ships) by Wi-Fi without using phone data. Some phone companies also have cruise-specific plans you can buy in advance of a voyage.

Personally, I never go that route. I keep it simple. I just put my phone in airplane mode the moment I step on board a ship and never switch it back on. I then turn on the phone's Wi-Fi, buy a Wi-Fi package and do all my calling, texting and web surfing over the internet. That way, there's no chance I'll be surprised by an unexpected phone charge.

Get ready to unplug from work

Really, this should go without saying, but you are heading on vacation . Google that word (and scroll down past the entries for the Ed Helms and Chevy Chase movies to the Wikipedia entry).

This trip is going to be all about taking a break from work , not spending hours every day dealing with the latest crisis back at the office — or, at least, it should be.

In the days leading up to your trip, make sure you wrap up any pressing work projects, let your co-workers know you'll be offline, reply to any outstanding emails and — most importantly — turn on your out-of-office message.

Trust us: You'll be so much happier.

What we know on Houthis' latest Ghadr anti-ship Iranian ballistic missile

Ghadr

Iran said on Wednesday that the Houthi rebels in Yemen have obtained the technology to produce the Islamic Republic's Ghadr ballistic missile, a development that could heighten the group’s capabilities to strike ships in the Red Sea amid new attacks this week.

The semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that the Houthis have developed a missile known as Muhit that is capable of hitting naval targets. The Muhit is "patterned after" Iran's Ghadr missile, according to the report.

The agency, which is affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, did not specify whether Iran provided the Houthis the technology for the missile, saying only that the group was "inspired" by Tehran.

“Inspired by Iran, the Yemeni military forces have obtained the technology to manufacture anti-ship ballistic missiles,” reported Tasnim.

The Ghadr is an intermediate-range ballistic missile developed by Iran. It has a range of 1,600 to 1,950 kilometers (995 to 1,210 miles) and was unveiled in 2007, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Missile Defense Project. Tasnim described the Ghadr as Iran’s first homegrown naval ballistic missile.

Iran is a major supporter of the Houthi rebels in Yemen. Tehran has denied directly arming the group, but has been implicated in weapons transfers. The US military's Central Command said that it seized two Iranian weapons shipments bound for the Houthis in January.

Houthi attacks

The Houthis have targeted international ships in the Red Sea for years, but significantly escalated the attacks since the start of the Gaza war. The group claims the ships are connected to Israel, though many of the targeted vessels have no known affiliation with the country.

Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree announced on Wednesday that the group recently targeted the Laax, Morea and Sealady ships with naval and ballistic missiles as well as drones in the Red Sea , according to the group’s Saba news outlet. The report did not specifically mention the Ghadr missile.

Reuters reported that the Marshall Islands-flagged, Greek-owned Laax was hit by five missiles fired from Yemen on Tuesday. There were no casualties and the ship continued on its course. Laax’s security company LSS-SAPU told the outlet that the owner has no connections to Israel or the United States.

Morea flies the flag of Malta and was bound for the Indian port of Paradeep. Sealady is likewise Maltese-flagged and was headed to Bangladesh’s Chittagong, according to the MarineTraffic tracking site.

Saraee also claimed the Houthis fired drones and missiles at the Alba and Maersk Hartford in the Arabian Sea, describing the ships as American. The US-flagged Maersk Hartford is bound for Jebel Ali near Dubai, while Alba flies the flag of the Bahamas and is en route to China’s Guangzhou, according to MarineTraffic.

Saraee added that the Houthis targeted the Minerva Antonia in the Mediterranean with winged missiles. The ship flies the Greek flag and arrived in the Suez Canal on Tuesday, having originated in Russia’s Novorossiysk, per MarineTraffic.

A large arsenal

The Houthis have a variety of weapons at their disposal, including both ballistic and cruise missiles as well as attack drones. In March, the Houthis hit Israeli territory with a cruise missile for the first time.

The Pentagon said earlier this month that the Houthis have weapons that can reach the Mediterranean Sea .
