What to Do in Los Angeles for 5 Days

Day 1: take it easy with a city tour.

Wherever you go, it’s always a good idea to spend at least a portion of the first day exploring the new town. This is an opportunity to go sightseeing at your own pace while also discovering attractions that you might want to explore further later on.

Here, you can order delicious food, and craft cocktails and enjoy stunning views from above after a long day with the family at Disneyland.

Day 3: Explore with a Warner Bros. Studio Tour + Guinness World Record Museum

Los Angeles itinerary 5 days is not complete without a Warner Bros. Studio Tour . This is a place where many of our all-time favorite movies and TV series were created, including Friends and the Big Bang Theory. For this reason, a family trip to California itinerary should, at the very least, include a 3-hour studio tour experience.

There are opportunities to spot celebrities at work during the tour. More than that, however, it’s really a fun and immersive family-friendly activity to be able to experience seeing the sets and props together.

After touring and having lunch at the Friends Boutique & Cafe inside the Studio, head over to the Guinness World Record Museum ! The car ride from Warner Bros. Studio is approximately 10 minutes. Then, in the Museum, spend an hour or two checking out the world records and trying out the super cool activities.

Check your whole party’s weight against the world’s heaviest person, see how far your skin will stretch, try your hand at breaking one of four real Guinness world records, and so much more!

Day 4: Enjoy Universal Studios Hollywood

There are multiple benefits to doing this, the most important of which is that the attractions will only be a walking distance from where you’ll stay.

If the kids forgot something and you need to come back for it or if one of you wants to take a quick nap in the middle of the day, both will not be a big issue since the hotel is just a few minutes away. In addition, you might not have to rent a car or worry about transportation!

Focus on One to Two Attractions Per Day

The best family vacations California are the ones that aren’t rushed. There is no way to go around Los Angeles and the surrounding counties while still being able to enjoy the experience other than to stay for a few days. Best Los Angeles Itinerary with Kids

Los Angeles – the city of Angels and also the city with an endless amount of things to do with the kids.  There is so much to do in Los Angeles with kids that you could spend a month here and still likely not do everything.

However, no doubt you don’t have a month; perhaps you have a week, five days, maybe even less.  No matter how much time you have in town, this guide will help you put together the best Los Angeles itinerary with kids .

To help put you put together the best itinerary for Los Angeles , this guide will cover a range of suggestions for those visiting for 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 days.  It will also help with tips on how to get between attractions and where to stay.

To be clear, this travel itinerary Los Angeles guide doesn’t include Disneyland.  Disneyland is not in Los Angeles; it’s in Orange County, so it’s recommended you stay in Anaheim while visiting Disneyland.  You can find out more about planning a trip to Disneyland here. However, we share some tips about visiting Disneyland at the end of this guide.

But anyway, let’s get into it and help you plan the best LA itinerary.

Now there really is no one perfect Los Angeles trip itinerary – because we all have kids of different ages and with different interests.  Plus, some of us will prefer to spend ages at certain attractions while others will breeze through them.

So I recommend you start by reading our guide on all there is to do in Los Angeles with kids here and make a list of all the things your family is interested in.  Then read through the different days in the Los Angeles travel itinerary options below and try and find days that cover similar attractions your family wants to see.

You will, of course, need to swap out some attractions here and there, but it will hopefully get you closer to making the ideal LA trip itinerary for your family.

Los Angeles Itinerary – 2 Days

Ok, so this Los Angeles itinerary – 2 days option will assume you have a full 2 days to spend exploring.  So to complete this Los Angeles in 2 days itinerary, it’s probably best you spend at least 3 nights in town.

For your 2 days in Los Angeles itinerary , I’d recommend you stay in Hollywood ( read our Hollywood hotel guide here) as you’ll find that most convenient for getting around to all the attractions.

I’d also recommend you consider getting a GO City LA Pass or an All Exclusive LA Pass , as many of the attractions recommended for this 2 day itinerary Los Angeles offers are covered by this pass.  You will save money with the pass instead of paying for each attraction individually.  If these passes cover an attraction mentioned below, I’ll let you know.

It’s recommended that you spend the first full day of your Los Angeles 2 day itinerary exploring all that the centre of Hollywood offers (read our guide on things to do in Hollywood here ). This is because all the Hollywood attractions are close together and it’s easy to walk between them.

Depending on where you’re staying, you may be able to walk to the attractions, take a bus or the subway (see more on getting around LA below).  If you are catching a bus, head towards the TCL Chinese Theatre, but get off a few blocks back so you can explore the Hollywood Walk of Fame .

As you’re exploring the Hollywood Walk of Fame, stop at the Celebrity Stars Tour stand and book the family into one of their tours (covered by LA Pass). These two hour tours run regularly throughout the day.  I’d recommend booking the last tour of the day, which is 4 pm, to give you plenty of time to visit the various attractions around Hollywood.

Now continue to make your way to the TCL Chinese Theatre.   Here book one of their 30 minute tours (covered by LA Pass).  Before or after your tour, find all your family’s favourite celebrities’ hands and footprints outside the theatre.

Next, walk to the Dolby Theatre (in the same centre as the TCL Chinese Theatre) – the home of the Academy Awards.  Book into one of their 30 minute tours (covered by the LA Pass) and experience all the glitz and glamour as the Hollywood stars do.

Now, as you’ve got limited time on this 2 day Los Angeles itinerary – I recommend you take this time to see the Hollywood sign here – even though it will be a bit far away.  So head to the second or third floor of the Hollywood and Highland Shopping Centre, right next to the Dolby Theatre, where you’ll be able to see the iconic Hollywood sign.

The location is fairly easy to find.  Simply head to the outdoor area, and there is a little open area facing out towards the hills – usually, there will be plenty of tourists here taking photos of the sign – so you can’t miss it.

This is probably a good time to break for lunch as there are plenty of family friendly places to eat within Hollywood and Highland.

Next up, spend an hour or so exploring the Hollywood Musuem (covered by the all exclusive LA Pass) (closed Mondays and Tuesdays).  Then head to the Funko Store (closed Mondays and Tuesdays), where the kids can take some great photos surrounded by their favourite characters and design and make their own Pop People.

Depending on whether you booked in for the Celebrity Stars Tour – you may have time to visit Madam Tussauds (covered by LA Pass) first.  This is a fun place for the kids (and parents) to take photos with their idols.

It’s probably now time for your Celebrity Stars Tour.  Afterwards, you might want to grab a bite to eat for dinner.

For older kids with energy still to burn, you can visit Ripley’s Beleive It or Not or the Guinness World Book of Records , as both are open late.

By now, you’re all probably exhausted, so either walk, take the bus or train or an Uber back to your hotel.

Alternative Option: If you don’t want to spend so much time on your 2 days Los Angeles itinerary in Hollywood, skip some of the attractions mentioned above and take the full loop on the Hop On Hop Off Bus (covered by LA Pass).  This goes around all the most popular attractions in Los Angeles, including Santa Monica Pier.

For larger groups or families, you may even consider renting a charter bus for this day.

The second day of your 2 days in LA itinerary is pretty simple because you’re off to a fun filled day at Universal Studios (covered by all exclusive LA Pass).

If you don’t have your own car with you, I recommend taking the train or an Uber to Universal Studios and getting there reasonably early to ensure you make the most of your day.  The theme park is only about a 10 minute drive from Hollywood or about 20 minutes on the train.  From the train station, walk across the road where you can catch the free shuttle to Universal Studios.

If it’s a busy time when visiting Universal Studios, I’d recommend considering the Express Passes – this means you get to skip the lines.  They are expensive though, so I recommend you can read our guide on how to decide if the Express Passes are worth it here.   We bought them for our recent trip and found it super helpful to get on all the rides quickly.  Although if you’re prepared to be there from opening to closing time, you don’t really need these.

Los Angeles Itinerary – 3 Days

For those able to extend their time, this Los Angeles itinerary 3 days option is for you.  For the first two days of your itinerary, simply follow the previous 2 day itinerary.

For your Los Angeles 3 day itinerary, I recommend you split your final day between the Warner Bros Studio Tour and Santa Monica.

Book in advance into one of the first Warner Bros Studio Tours (covered by standard LA Pass).  They usually start early from around 8 am and are scheduled every 30 minutes from there.  These tours go for about 3 hours, including a 1 hour guided tour and about a 2 hour self guided tour.

It’s about a 15 minute drive to the Warner Bros Studio Tour from Hollywood or about 30 minutes by public transport.

After your Warner Bro Studios Tour, on your 3 day itinerary for Los Angeles , I recommend you spend the afternoon in Santa Monica.   It’s best to drive here or take an Uber (about 30 minutes) because otherwise, it’s about 2 hours by public transport.

There is plenty to do in and around Santa Monica (read our guide here on things to do in Santa Monica ).  Depending on your children’s age, you might like to walk or rent some bikes and go down the boardwalk to Venice Beach.  If it’s warm, you can take the kids for a swim or simply stop at one of the various parks along the way.

Most kids want to spend some time at the Santa Monica Pier .  Here you can enjoy some of the rides at Pacific Park , visit the Heal the Bay Aquarium (covered by all exclusive LA Pass) or play games at the Playland Arcade.

Just a short walk from Santa Monica Pier is downtown, where there is great shopping and places to take the kids for something to eat.  It’s the perfect way to finish your 3 days in Los Angeles itinerary.

From Santa Monica, it’s about 30 minutes by car back to Hollywood or 1 hour and 15 minutes by public transport.

And that brings us to the end of your 3-day Los Angeles itinerary.

Los Angeles Itinerary – 4 Days

If you have time in your schedule, a Los Angeles itinerary 4 days option is when you get to really sink your teeth in some of the city’s less touristy attractions.  For the first 3 days of your itinerary, simply follow the previous 3 day itinerary.

Given that we all have different interests, I’d recommend reading through the rest of this guide and picking a day for your 4 day Los Angeles itinerary that suits your family – not necessarily the one I’ll outline below.

However, for those doing a longer trip, such as the Los Angeles itinerary 7 days option, you may wish to simply follow this day.

For movie buff families with children 10+, I recommend starting with another movie studio tour on the last day of your Los Angeles 4 day itinerary .  This time the Paramount Pictures Studio Tour.  These two hour tours are scheduled throughout the day, with the first starting at around 9 am.

If you’re staying in Hollywood, it’s relatively easy to take public transport to the Studio – it takes around 30 minutes.  Otherwise, it’s about 10 minutes by car.

After your tour, head down Melrose Avenue for some lunch and look out for some of the street art for some cool Instagram worthy photos. 

For families with kids younger than 10, I recommend spending this day of your 4 day LA itinerary in and around the Griffith Observatory .  For the families heading to the Paramount Movie tour, head to the Griffith Observatory afterwards.

For families heading straight to the Griffith Observatory from their Hollywood accommodation, it’s about a 20 minute drive or 40 minutes by public transport.  For the families heading there from the Paramount Studios, it’s about a 20 minute drive or 40 minutes by public transport.

Of course, at the Griffith Observatory, you’ve got the planetarium with a range of great shows for the kids.  But there is also the opportunity for the kids to look at the sun through a telescope, listen to educational talks, see the Hollywood sign and go on some lovely hikes.

For the families spending the day around the Griffith Observatory, there is also the Old Los Angeles Zoo (covered by the LA Pass), a vintage carousel, steam powered trains and a museum.

This brings us to the end of your 4 day itinerary Los Angeles offers.

As with day one, for larger groups or families, you may even consider renting a charter bus for this day.

Los Angeles Itinerary – 5 Days

For the first 4 days of your itinerary, simply follow the previous 4 day itinerary.

Now for families with older teens, how about starting your Los Angeles itinerary 5 days option with a tour of the colourful streets of South Central.  The LA Hood Life Tours takes you to some famous movie locations and landmarks.  These tours leave from central Hollywood and tours are 3.5 hours.

After your tour, grab some lunch, and then it’s time to check out one of the famous Los Angeles museums  we’ve listed below for those on the 7 day Los Angeles itinerary .  Simply choose one or two that interest your family.  

For families with younger children for your 5 day Los Angeles itinerary , skip the LA Hood Life tour and spend more time at the museums or add an extra museum into your day.

Most museums around Los Angeles can easily be accessed via public transport or an Uber may be easy for families with younger children.

If you’re a family who loves movies, another option for your 5 days in Los Angeles itinerary is to take an afternoon tour of the Sony Studios.  The last tour of the day is at 2.30 pm, so provided you jump in an Uber after your LA Hood Life Tour finishes, you’ll have plenty of time.  Keep in mind though, that kids must be 12+ to do the Sony Studio Tour.

If you decide to do the Sony Studios tour – it’s about 1.25 hours back to Hollywood by public transport or a 40 minute drive.

That brings us to the end of your 5 days Los Angeles itinerary.

Los Angeles Itinerary – 7 Days

For the first 5 days of your itinerary, simply follow the previous 5 day itinerary.

For those planning a 7 days in Los Angeles itinerary – you’re going to really get a great taste of what the city offers families.  The remainder of your 1 week itinerary Los Angeles offers will be spent exploring the city’s great museums.

Now, of course, you don’t have to follow this 1 week Los Angeles itinerary in the order I’ve listed.  It may be best to split your museum days up across the week.  I’ve simply listed it in this order so that people on shorter trips, say a Los Angeles 3 days itinerary or a Los Angeles weekend itinerary, get the best of what the city offers into their trip.

I’ve also grouped attractions that are in reasonably close proximity to each other, so you’re not wasting time going from one end of the city to the other unnecessarily.

Ok, let’s get on with your final 2 days of your Los Angeles 1 week itinerary.

I recommend spending day 6 of your 1 week in Los Angeles itinerary at the Academy Musuem of Motion Pictures , the La Brea Tar Pits (covered by standard LA Pass) and the Peterson Automotive Musuem .  You could also visit the Los Angeles County Musuem of Art if you have time.

These museums are within a short 5 minute walk, making it the perfect day.

Now all these museums in one day may be a bit too much for some families, so start with the ones you most want to see.  That way, if you get time or are inclined to do so, you can add other museums to your day, depending on how you feel.

The museums are a 20 minute drive from Hollywood or about 30 minutes by bus.

For the very last day of your Los Angeles one week itinerary, it’s once again time to check out some of the city’s awesome museums.  Today I recommend you consider visiting the Grammy Musuem (covered by LA Pass), The Broad , The California Science Centre (covered by the LA Pass) and the Natural History Musuem (covered by LA Pass) .

Now depending on your family’s interest might depend on whereabouts you start. First, however, I will say this – there is about a 25 minute walk between the Grammy Musuem and The Broad, while the California Science Centre and the Natural History Musuem are both located in Exposition Park, about a 20 minute bus ride away from the other two attractions.  

For families with young kids, you could even spend your entire day at Exposition Park exploring the Science Centre and Natural Musuem.  While families with older children will no doubt enjoy the Grammy Musuem and may have the stamina to do all four attractions in a single day.

Whatever attractions you choose and whichever order you choose to visit them, you can easily get to them by subway from Hollywood with it being about a 40 minute journey from Exposition Park and 25 minutes journey from the Broad.

And that completes your one week Los Angeles itinerary.

Getting Around Los Angeles

Throughout the suggested itinerary for Los Angeles, I mention Uber times as well as using public transport.  I recommend you use a combination of both during your stay in Los Angeles.  In some cases, public transportation is relatively easy to catch between the attractions, but other times the time to travel via bus and train is not worth it and you’re better off getting an Uber.

Don’t be afraid to catch the trains around Los Angeles; unlike other big cities like London or New York, where multiple platforms and trains go in every which direction – in Los Angeles, there is only one platform, and trains go in two directions only.  So as you can see in the photo above, you simply go to the one platform and decide if you’re heading to North Hollywood or Union Station – that’s it!.  

I also found buses really easy to catch too.  Just put your trip into Google Maps and choose the public transport option and it will tell you where you need to be, at what time to catch what bus – it’s actually very easy.   

To ride the train, you’ll need a TAP card, which can be purchased for $2 USD from vending machines at the station. You can also download the TAP LA app and purchase cards there.  The vending machines are super easy to use; just follow the instructions on the screens.  You will need to buy one card at a time though.  As a family, I found it easier to buy cards, so each person has their own card rather than messing with Apps.

A standard fare is $1.75 USD per 1 way trip on a bus and train with multiple transfers within 2 hours.  Alternatively, $7 USD will get you a one day pass or a 7 day pass is $25.   So consider how often you’ll use public transport and decide whether to pay as you or a pass will work out better for you.  We found it super easy to use public transport in LA and highly recommend it for those tight on a budget.

To plan all your journeys using Uber or public transport, I recommend using Google Maps.

Where to Stay in Los Angeles

For this trip to Los Angeles itinerary , I recommend staying in Hollywood and have provided basic travel times from the various attractions to and from Hollywood.  While Hollywood isn’t the most glamorous part of Los Angeles, it is the most convenient for getting around to the various attractions.

Why Isn’t Disneyland on this Itinerary?

Now I know most families coming to Los Angeles will no doubt want to visit Disneyland – so why haven’t I included it in this LA travel itinerary?  The reason is Disneyland is in Anaheim, which is quite a distance from Los Angeles and all its attractions.

Most families plan on spending at least a few days visiting Disneyland and California Adventure Park and therefore, it is best to stay in Anaheim during this part of your trip.  If, however you just want to visit Disneyland for one day, then it would make sense to stay in Hollywood for the entire trip and travel to Disneyland there and back in one day.  It will be a big day though.

For adults of a certain age, the thought of a family fishing trip might evoke memories of Andy Griffith walking along with a young Ron Howard. Whistling as they strolled through the pines, headed off for a relaxing day on the lake just outside of quaint Mayberry, North Carolina. In an effort to recreate this idyllic scene, you may even be tempted to pack up your family and strike out for a family fishing trip in hopes of creating your own bonding time, much like Andy and Opie.

The family fishing trip would be much shorter than most Californians would assume, as the scene was actually filmed in Franklin Canyon , a man-made reservoir turned recreation area just outside of Los Angeles. Franklin Canyon is gorgeous, and while it is well worth a visit, you’re more likely to run into a Rolling Stones photographer who is shooting an album cover than you are a father and son duo from a black-and-white 1960s television show.

The Fishing

 Ok, let’s get to the meat and potatoes of the trip.  The fishing.

The Lodge at Blue Sky , part of the Auberge Resorts collection, has a flawless reputation in the fishing tourism industry, and with great reason. Their partnership with a local guide service provides the local knowledge you need to land a photo-worthy target fish.  It’s no wonder fishermen from around the globe flock to their locations.  They’ve put together some great packages for families to choose from based on goals and time constraints.  All of their trip options provide the necessary gear, waders, and transportation for a successful day on the water. 

Half-Day Wading Trip

There are two destination choices for a half-day wading trip. The Provo River (25-minute drive) and the Weber River (10-minute drive).  This is a great chance for a beginner fly fisherman to learn the basics of rod rigging, casting, basic knots, and fly tying, as well as the great diversity of trout species.  The whole trip takes roughly 3-4 hours, and all participants must be at least eight years of age .  Auberge also offers a full-day wading trip which travels further out to private property and includes lunch.  Offering a chance to further refine your family’s skills under the expert tutelage of your guide.

High Alpine Drift Boat Trip

Families looking for a little more adventure will love this family fishing trip.  After a scenic 1 hour drive through the mountains, you will arrive at your destination.  A private reservoir tucked away in privacy.  Spend 6 hours with your guide as you target the elusive Cutthroat Trout. If ever you had the opportunity to land one, this is it.  This trip will last an entire day (6 hours) with a Max of 2 guests per boat and also has a minimum age of eight .

Heli-Fishing Trip

You came here for the ultimate fishing experience, right?  Well, here it is.  Board a private helicopter right at the Blue Sky Lodge and enjoy a scenic flight high in the Uintas Mountains.  After touching down in a remote mountain meadow, guests make the trek to isolated lakes and streams.  Here, they can try their hand in some of the least worked waters available besides experienced guides.  Before heading back, take the opportunity to enjoy a rustic lunch by the lake and let the experience sink in.  This trip lasts 4 hours and has an 8-guest max.

Gracies Farm

When Blue Sky first arrived, they found a beautiful landscape, excellent for artistic inspiration but ill-suited for farming.  The soil was hard-packed, over-grazed, and lacking essential nutrients.  Enter Blue Sky and their sustainable farming guru Lynsey Gammon.  A self-described ‘farmher,’ Gammon and her team of fellow farmhers have worked hard in pursuit of a successful grow operation without sacrificing their love of the soil.  You won’t see tractors pacing along straight lines for hours on end or sprayers misting fertilizer and pesticides in alternating increasing dosages.  Her all-natural approach has created an oasis of fertility and provides produce at the on-site farmers market from June-October.

Families wanting to add a little farm experience to their fishing trip can visit Gracies Farm on Tuesdays at 10:00 am. The farm offers a free 30-minute walking tour to all guests of the lodge.  This complimentary tour is an opportunity to learn more about their passion for sustainable farming.  If you don’t know the difference between a caterpillar tunnel and a high tunnel, this is a perfect introduction to a local small-scale farm.  If you’re looking to get a little more in-depth, maybe you’re a gardener yourself, then a private tour may be more your speed. Ask all the questions you’d like on a 90-minute guided tour to transform your garden back home.

Little Vaqueros Camp

All parents traveling with kids have been there.  You’re away with the family on vacation and put together a much-needed day of wine tasting or fly-fishing for the adults, but struggle to shake that feeling of guilt for leaving the kids behind.  Blue Sky has found just the solution with their Little Vaqueros Camp.

Each day of the week is themed to provide a full day of activities with a focus on engaging young minds, bodies, and senses with nature.  Counselors take kids ages 5-12 outside for adventure-based activities to learn about the local environment, history, and culture.  While the adults are enjoying their time away, the young ones are learning the basics of fishing, horse care, cooking, farming, mining, and even yoga.  Kids won’t be in a rush to leave by the end of the day. 

The camp runs each day from 9:30 am to 3 pm with a provided lunch break from 11-12. Morning sessions of camp are complimentary. Afternoon sessions are an additional cost.  Full-day campers can enjoy a complimentary meal from the children’s menu. 

Orlando, Florida – Lake Tohopekaliga

Yes, it is a mouthful.  The name dates back to the Seminole Indians who once lived around the lake and gave it the name.  Tohopekaliga is Seminole for “We will gather here,” but the locals refer to it simply as Lake Toho or West Lake to differentiate it from the nearby East Tohopekaliga.  

Lake Toho, just outside Orlando, is considered one of the finest Bass fishing hotspots in the country, best known for the record catch set (with a five-fish limit) in the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society contest that came in at a total of a whopping 45 pounds 2 oz. 

For those of you who have never fished Bass before, a 10-pound lunker is entering trophy fish territory.  The Florida Wildlife Commission performed a study of the lake that showed an average of one bass over 10 pounds for every 10 acres of lake.  With numbers like that, you begin to understand why this 23,000 Acre lake is so productive.  That’s a mind-boggling 2,300 wall-worthy bass!

Why is Lake Toho home to so many monster fish?  The lake is fairly shallow, with a maximum depth of about 13 Feet. Providing ample acreage for the grass flats that Bass shelter in during the summer months when the water temperature rises. 

Large growths of maidencane, bullrush, and hydrilla grasses are excellent areas to target, and Toho has more than its fair share.

Freshwater fishing brings in billions of dollars each year for the state, so it is a priority for them to manage the health of the lakes.  This includes opening up the dam to allow large drawdowns in the Lake level to allow for man-made droughts to help control invasive plant species and ensure healthy algae levels.

Picture your family loudly zipping across the shallow water, dodging marshy shorelines and alligators while looking like the coolest cats in town.  Have you ever seen someone on an airboat that wasn’t happy? No.

Wild Willy’s Airboat will guide your family around Lake Toho on one of his two Airboats depending on the group size.  One-hour smooth flying tours leave throughout the day.  Make sure to book an earlier trip if you’re worried about the midday Florida heat.  Most riders are surprised at just how smooth the ride in an airboat is. Even those prone to motion sickness are pleasantly surprised. 

There is no minimum age restriction , with kids as young as three months having enjoyed the trip.  Willy himself is a nature enthusiast and enjoys pointing out the Gators, Bald Eagles, and Snail Kites that call the Lake Home.  Don’t be surprised when he stops the boat to hop in the water and bring a creature up close for the kids to get a better look.  At the conclusion of your trip, take the opportunity to check out the animals on their property, including the chance to hold their two young alligators, Thunder and Half Stripe!

Where to Stay Near Lake Toho

Odds are this whole area would mostly be a swamp if not for the legendary House of Mouse.  Whether you intend on popping into the park to pay respect on your trip or not, the Disney Animal Kingdom Lodge makes a great base for your trip to Florida. A short drive to both Lake Toho and a plethora of theme parks, this resort features a stockpile of family-oriented activities in a fun atmosphere. 

Hakuna Matata Playground

Hakuna Matata, it’s a wonderful phrase and a wonderful playground.  Hotel stays with kids can go sideways fast.  The jumping from bed to bed and the bouncing off the walls can leave parents feeling crazed and worried about bothering the neighbors.  Having a playground on-site to take kids that are being…..well, kids, can feel like a miracle.  

The Hakuna Matata playground isn’t groundbreaking. It looks much like most playgrounds.  With two separate large features sized appropriately for their age groups.  There are various activities, such as a xylophone, a maze, and some speaking tubes.  The area is thoughtfully well-shaded to reduce the heat throughout the day, and the rubber mulch provides excellent drainage after the ever-present Florida rain showers.  Much like Yoda, don’t judge this amenity by its size.

Movies Under the Stars

Each night of the week, there is an outdoor movie available for guests of the lodge.  Luckily, Disney has no shortage of movie rights, and they are able to keep a fresh inventory in circulation.  The location of the movie is shared between the Hakuna Matata playground and the Pembe Savannah overlook.  Here is a handy site for checking the movie schedule, as well as a few extra tips for making the most of the evening activities.  The movies start at 8:30, which can be pretty late for the young ones, so you may want to consider putting on the pajamas before the opening credits. 

Montauk, New York – Deep Sea Fishing

We’ve looked at some dream destination fishing trips for kids, but we’ve been mostly hanging out inland.  Where can we go if we want to add a little salt to our lives? Montauk, New York, claims to hold more fishing records than any other port in the world! Is it true? I have no idea, but I do know this beautiful location is a highly productive sport fishing hotspot.

Montauk is located at the tip of Long Island and formed by the same glacial retreat that gave us Cape Cod and the Islands.  The sun, surf, and tourists should leave many West Coast travelers feeling right at home.  Let’s look at some great options for a family in Montauk.

Susie E II Charter Fishing

Capt. Cod Fishing 

Cod might be the most popular fish in the Atlantic, but chasing it is not for the weak.  Peak season for Cod runs from December – April, which can lead to some frosty days.  Cod trips are a long day on the water, with the boat leaving the dock between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. and returning 12 hours later.  Fighting Cod on light tackle is a wonderful way to spend the day, and the hearty family willing to take on the adventure are often rewarded with dozens of pounds of fresh fish to take home.

Shark Fishing

Everyone who has seen the movie Jaws knows sharks are the undeniable king of the ocean.  Their history predates trees by 100 million years and Dinosaurs by an additional hundred.  Seeing them in the wild can be a magical experience from the safety of a boat.  The powerful creatures are a favorite target species for fishermen looking for a worthy opponent.  

The water off Montauk predominantly features Blue, Mako, and Thresher Sharks.  These fantastic beasts will provide families with a workout that is as hard as it is exciting.  Imagine hooking a Mako shark, able to reach speeds up to 50 mph, and battling him back to the boat as he launches himself 20’ in the air.  Or you can tango with a Thresher shark and their long powerful tail, which earned them the nickname ‘sea bull.  Some of these Threshers will leave your family working for hours to finally get the 300-pound monster on board.   If you thought that speckled trout gave you a fight, imagine one of these creatures tugging on your rod and reel!  Old tradition holds you should kiss the first fish you catch for good luck. Maybe best to skip that on this trip, though!

Things To Do In LA With Kids

1 – hollywood sign.

You can’t get much more iconic then the Hollywood Sign! And hiking to the Hollywood sign is a great way to see it and to get a view of all of LA. You won’t be able to touch the sign but you can hike right up behind it.

Take note this is a long hike – probably about 3 mile – 4 mile round trip hike from the Lake Hollywood park (where there is free public parking) and a lot of it is uphill. It isn’t easy, but our 6 year old did it with just being carried on our back a couple of times.

It is also very confusing. Some people were telling us you can’t hike up there and then we would see others that said you could . . . we kind of just kept following the signs and the people and we ended up going the right way. And no, we did not go in any of the no trespassing areas!

Once at the top you get an amazing view of LA with the Hollywood sign right below you. Also on the way up you get some pretty amazing views of the sign.

We talk with the kids about how when we see the sign in movies and TV shows now we can be like, “Hey, we have been there!”

Map to Hollywood Hills

We followed the map on this post . And parked at Lake Hollywood Park and then walked up the Mt. Lee route – you do end up walking on a road as you are going up – but that is the right way to go. It is a service road and we did see service vehicles so be aware of that. We also walked through a neighborhood to get to the road. It was an interesting trail but it was all good and we just kept asking people who were walking towards us if we were going the right way.

There is also an option to do a Horseback Ride on the Hollywood Trail where you can see the sign.

2 – Walk of Fame

Is a visit to LA complete without doing the Hollywood Walk of Fame and seeing the Chinese Theatre?! Probably not, but in my opinion it is a little disappointing. I mean sure you can see the stars and see some handprints at the Chinese Theatre but I don’t know, I think I expected more.

This is also located in a busy part of the city so you have people selling you things up and down the street and lots of activity going on. If you like that vibe, you may love it here!

3 – Venice Beach

If you are looking for a unique experience than Venice Beach is the place for you. There is a nice sized walkway that takes you from the Santa Monica Pier to Venice Beach so we opted to park right in the middle in a large parking lot – you do have to pay for it.

Then we tried to get the kids skateboards out so that they could ride down the walkway, but it didn’t work out . . . they are still learning to skateboard and the walkway was super busy and lots of people had the motorized scooters so it didn’t feel very safe to have the kids on their boards.

We opted to put the boards back and instead choose to go on the walking path where we walked along the beach and into Venice beach. The Venice beach boardwalk is filled with shops and has a pretty constant smell of weed . . . it is legal in CA and is sold right on the boardwalk.

We then headed over to the skate park to check that out and we could have stayed for hours watching the skaters. Right behind us the roller bladders were working it with a group rollerblade dance session so that was interesting to watch too!

Next was Muscle Beach – it was much smaller than we anticipated but was still cool to see. There are also a ton of really cool contemporary art murals painted on the walls and people watching is top notch!

4 – Santa Monica Pier

We have heard a lot of really good things about the Pier but have never made it there ourselves. It was super busy the day we were there – but it is definitely on our list of places to check out next time we are in the area. With the ferris wheel and ice cream options I know our kids would love it! You can read more about the Santa Monica Pier here .

5 – Malibu

After the craziness of Venice Beach we were looking for something a little quieter so we headed out to Malibu to see what that was all about and to find a beach to let the kids run on.

We ended up at El Pescador State Beach in Malibu which was a beautiful state park with a beach and was a really nice introduction into what the Pacific Ocean and California coast would look like as we made our way north.

6 – Natural History Museum Of Los Angeles

Carson (our oldest) is really into Dinosaurs so we made a stop at the Natural History Museum. With our reciprocal museum membership  we were able to get in for free. And we spent a couple hours exploring the dinosaur bones and a few others things at the museum.

It is a good size museum and well worth a stop if your crew is into natural history and/or Dinosaurs!

7 – Kidspace Museum

This kid friendly museum is out in Pasadena so may be a bit of a drive but it was an awesome museum – we easily could have spent all day here. We again used our reciprocal museum membership and were able to get 4 tickets covered.

The children’s museum is almost all outside with great hands on activities for the kids to do. It is a perfect fit for kids age 11/12 and under. Well worth a visit if the kids need a day to run around and play.

8 – California Science Center

We had also heard great things about the California Adventure Center and definitely would have gone but we ran out of time! Note that the museum usually closes at 5pm . . . At the museum you can check out the Space Shuttle Endeavor Exhibition which looks amazing.

We had asked our followers for recommendations on things to do in LA with kids but we ran out of time and couldn’t do all of them. But we wanted to share the list with you in case you have more time to explore the area:

9 – LA Train Station

Great for anyone that loves trains and when you are done you can walk across the street to grab lunch at Philippe the Original Beef Dips!

10 – The Farmers Market at the Grove

We heard this one over and over again from people and sounded like a really unique and fun place to visit.

11 – Griffith Observatory and Park

We could see the observatory when we did the Hollywood Sign hike and I was disappointed we didn’t make it there. Would have loved to go at night and to see the Samuel Oschin Planetarium.

There is also the beautiful Griffith Park that you can explore and you won’t want to miss Travel Town ! Griffith Park is a great place for kid activities, Los Angeles has a lot to offer on that front! You can visit the LA Zoo, take Pony Rides or Train Rides and so much more!

12 – El Capitan Theater

A great place to see a movie! Plus it is gorgeous inside.

13 – The Los Angeles Public Library

Beautiful inside and lots of great events and activities going on.

14 – La Brea Tar Pits

Which I was disappointed we didn’t do but the location didn’t really work with the other things we did.

15 – WB Studios Tour

I looked into this one and it was pricey and there was an age restriction – everyone is suppose to be 8 years old or older. If the shows would have been ones the kids watched we probably would have done it but they weren’t.

17 – Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal Studios Hollywood is a perfect attraction to add to your list of things to do in Los Angeles. Especially if you are Harry Potter fans!

We had just done Universal in Orlando earlier in the year so we opted to skip Universal Studios Hollywood theme park this time around and did Walt Disneyland instead. My parents and sister’s family went to Universal and they enjoyed it. But we were surprised to hear it closed super early at 6pm . . . so be sure to check the times. 18 – Puppet Show

Looking for a unique experience? Check out a Puppet Show in downtown LA like the Bob Baker Marionette Theater.

19 – San Pedro

Check out this historic downtown waterfront where you can shop, dine, visit an art gallery or just walk around. You can also stop to see the USS Iowa in this area.

20 – Skirball Cultural Center

This Cultural Center has so much to offer! They offer events including weekly story times, guided tours, and a mini Noah’s Ark! Food, drinks and snacks are also available while you take in all the Center has to offer. This would be a great place for kids birthday parties! If you are interested in checking out museums, you may also want to go to the Autry Museum or the Getty Center !

21 – Grand Central Market

If you are a foodie, you must check out Grand Central Market! So many different food vendors and options to choose from.

22 – Take Flight

Walk the streets and window shop, check out the farmers market, see what events are going on. If your kids or you are into it then sit and people walk looking for celebrities!

A cemetery is a weird thing to have on the list. But it is a world famous landmark in Los Angeles and know for its events. Be sure to check out the open air events happening during your visit!

27 – Echo Park

Check out the mural, the time travel mart for interesting finds, shop at the cookbook or rent a pedal boat for the lake. Lots of fun things to do here!

28 – Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Garden.

Yes it is a library but it is beautiful! Plus they have a botanical garden.

There are quite a few in the Los Angeles county area! If your kids are into this it is worth finding one close by and making a stop.

30 – Exposition Park

There is a lot to do in this urban park. It is home to a variety of museums including the California Science Museum and Natural History Museum.

Hey guys, Enjoy your content, I often find it relevant with the info I need. I’m from Australia and have been following you on SM for a while now – wexploretravel. We – family of 4, will be heading to LA in March 2019 and had most of your list on our list, most but not all. We are gravitating towards the coast, Santa Monica, Venice Beach & Malibu however do want to see Hollywood & Downtown. Being so spread out as LA is my question to you is regarding advice on accommodation. Would you split the stay into two say Downtown including Hollywood then move and spend time on coast? Can you recommend any family friendly accommodation that won’t require my kidneys to pay? Thanks again guys, much appreciation in advance. Regards – Will

Hi Will, sorry for the late reply. I’m sure you have accommodations set by now, but staying downtown for a few days will allow easier access to see the city – hopefully avoiding as much traffic as possible. We stayed in Acton, CA, which is a good 40 minute drive from downtown. We were in our RV at a campground so I can’t really say of an affordable hotel. However, you do have 2 kidneys, right?? I’m sure you could get by with just 1. lol, have a great trip!

Downtown offers a variety for tourists, rendering it difficult to solely classify it as a family-friendly destination or a late-night hotspot. Throughout the day, you may explore the busy neighborhood while enjoying Los Angeles’ rich history. 

Investors have transformed ancient school buildings into trendy restaurants and upscale retail establishments. In addition, there are many museums to explore, including:

• The well-known Grammy Museum
• The Museum of Contemporary Art
• The Walt Disney Concert Hall

You can quickly get from point A to point B and see all the city’s top sights by taking a bus tour or public transport. However, if you prefer the hustle and bustle of the city center, you’ll be happy to hear that the downtown area is pedestrian-friendly.

Most of these destinations are within a short distance of one another and feature parks, street performers, and food trucks in their immediate vicinity. You’ll experience the neighborhood’s diversity, evident in its nightlife scene. You can also visit the Staples Center, the legendary Los Angeles Lakers home, and underground music venues.

If you’re just in Los Angeles for a short while, consider staying in Downtown Los Angeles. There’s a lot to see and do there, and it’s also convenient to get to other popular neighborhoods like Hollywood and Silver Lake. Moreover, there are multiple reasonably priced accommodation options.

On the negative side, Downtown LA is close to the notorious area of Skid Row, which is not a great spot to hang out. Parking is difficult to find, so if you bring your car, you’ll need to plan ahead or be prepared to circle around looking for spots.

There’s a good chance that you have heard of this place before. Hollywood is a good option for first-time visitors to Los Angeles. Located at the base of Hollywood Hills, the neighborhood has must-see landmarks, restaurants, and nightlife options.

Thinking about a lavish lifestyle is only natural whenever you hear “Hollywood.” Still, despite its breathtaking scenery, the city’s section is not as glamorous as it appears in the movies. It might come as a surprise, but it’s easy to get excellent low-cost lodging options in the neighborhood.

You can board the convenient Metro Red Line at the Hollywood & Highland station.

Typically, a city’s downtown area is said to be its most central location. However, staying in Hollywood places you in a more advantageous position than if you were to stay in Downtown LA, which has the finest access to public transportation. You can head east into the city or west toward West Hollywood and the stunning Pacific Ocean from your accommodation.

West Hollywood is one of the nicest neighborhoods in Los Angeles because it is close to the city’s top attractions. Furthermore, it boasts a number of its must-visit landmarks. It would be best if you considered staying here to experience Hollywood with a touch of the real Los Angeles.

You can escape the hustle and bustle of the city’s main highways and enjoy the neighborhood’s soothing residential feel. You’ll have the opportunity to catch a deep breath while feeling a world away from what makes Los Angeles what it is today.

One of the fun neighborhoods in the greater Los Angeles area to explore on a bicycle in Santa Monica. The city has a bike action plan and a bike-sharing program. It’s also notable for being one of the few places where scooter-sharing businesses are legal.

Therefore, visitors looking to save money should consider staying in the neighboring Venice Beach. You can also head to Muscle Beach to see bodybuilders flex their muscles in front of thousands of onlookers or to Venice Canals to witness ducks.

When figuring out how to get around Santa Monica and the surrounding area, there are some things you should be aware of. The Santa Monica Freeway (Interstate 10) tends to be very busy. Family of bears take a swim, cool off in pool of Southern California home: Watch video

A Southern California couple is gaining attention for unexpected guests that arrived Monday on their property.

Video captured by one of the men home on lunch shows a mama bear and her two cubs enjoying the family pool. The mama bear doesn't hesitate to jump right in, while the cubs aren't so sure they're ready.

Ricky Martinez and Brian Gordon, residents of the Monrovia home told NBC Los Angeles that they have seen the mother bear before and have named her Maddie, but this is the first time they've seen the cubs.

"We respect them from a heathy distance," Martinez said. "We stay away. We let them do whatever they are doing."

But the couple admires the bears whenever they're around. "We are the real intruders," Gordon shared with NBCLA. "So, we never call the police."

Bear sightings are common in the Monrovia foothills

The couple purchased a bear-shaped floatation device in case the bear family decides to come and play again. One bear in particular loves to come and swim with an inflatable unicorn that the couple keeps replacing because it keeps getting popped by the bear.

Though a variety of bears come around, Maddie is their favorite. They even have a painting of her in their living room, NBCLA showed.

"She's even crashed our pool parties if we're barbequing," Gordon shared with the affiliate.

Up in the foothills of Monrovia, bear sightings are common, but when mating season begins, residents have to be more careful to put away trash as it attracts the larger, more dangerous male bears.

Over all, residents of the area enjoy sharing their space with their furry friends.

"This used to be my house! I miss my bears 🐻," one woman commented on the post first shared on Instagram.

"So cool that you respect the bears! Love your bear pool float.❤️," another wrote.

Many others shared their excitement for future content on the bears.

"We are always left in awe when we see the [them], especially a momma bear with cubs. We haven't seen cubs that little before, and it was the cutest thing ever," Martinez shared with NBCLA.
