People sitting and talking with a local at a homestay in Sapa, Vietnam

Vietnamese food is where it’s at.

Wherever we travel, it’s the flavours we remember best. A crusty bánh mì or streetside pho, seafood cù lao hotpots and (scarily addictive) coffee with condensed milk. Vietnam tours are tasty, plain and simple. We won’t just drop you in Halong Bay and call it a day. Our local leaders will introduce you to rice farmers in Sapa and fishermen on the Mekong Delta. They’ll guide you through the Cu Chi Tunnels, take you to the best beaches and on a street food crawl through Ho Chi Minh City. Our stomach’s rumbling already...

Learn more about Vietnam

History and government, early history.

Vietnam has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Archaeological finds suggest that structured societies existed as early as the 1st millennium BC. Early society was mostly feudal and agriculture-based, with various dynasties overseeing different parts of Vietnam until the Chinese invasion of 111 BC, which saw the societies of Vietnam and China intertwined. Various Chinese dynasties dominated the area for hundreds of years, although revolts finally led to Vietnam gaining self-autonomy in 905. By 938, this period of Chinese imperial domination came to a close and Vietnam entered into an age of independence.

Recent history

During the 19th century, Vietnam came under the influence of French colonisers, who assumed control of Vietnam after the Sino-French War of 1884 and 1885. French Indochina was formed in 1887, and included parts of Vietnam, Cambodia and, later on, Laos. Although the French managed to suppress internal movements towards independence for many years, their control was finally relinquished in 1954 when Vietnamese forces overcame the French during the first Indochina War. Following this war, Vietnam was divided, with separate forces ruling the north (led by Ho Chi Minh) and the south (led by Ngo Dinh Diem, with support from the United States).

The second Indochina War created wide-scale devastation and turmoil for the people of Vietnam, leading to mass migration to other parts of the world as asylum seekers tried to escape the conflict. More recently, Vietnam has benefited from the free market economy set up in 1986. Vietnam's economy continues to expand, with agriculture and industry providing the backbone and the tourism sector also contributing. Although many Vietnamese people live below the poverty line, there have been widespread improvements in literacy and health, which hopefully will continue to improve in the future.

Geography and environment

Occupying a long, thin part of the Indochinese peninsula, Vietnam shares borders with China , Laos and Cambodia . Much of Vietnam's terrain is mountainous, particularly the north and central highland regions. Although people still choose to live in the densely forested highland regions, most of Vietnam's population is concentrated in the cities of the low-lying areas, where infrastructure is more easily built and the land is fertile. One of the 12 great rivers of the world, the Mekong, runs through Vietnam and has been responsible for wide-scale flooding. A system of canals and levees has been quite successful in redistributing the water during monsoons, and has helped to alleviate flooding in the Mekong Delta and surrounding areas.

Vietnam has a nice mix of interesting markets and small shops, with handicrafts, art and clothing among the best picks.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Vietnam

1. Tailored clothing

Hoi An is one of the best places in the world to get tailor-made clothing at a great price. Find a tailor, choose your fabric, get measured and return later to collect your custom-made fashion.

2. Hilltribe handicrafts

Some of Vietnam's hilltribe people make excellent woven bags, clothing and jewellery which make meaningful souvenirs for friends back home.

As one of the world's largest coffee exporters, Vietnamese coffee is among the world's best. If you’re a coffee fan, why not take a little taste of Vietnam home with you.

4. Lacquerware

The time-consuming, intensive process of creating Vietnamese lacquer art results in a beautiful, smooth and polished finish that adorns everything from bowls to paintings and jewellery boxes. While not the cheapest of souvenirs, authentic lacquer art is worth spending a bit more on.

Culture and customs

Vietnam's ancient culture can be traced back centuries and over the years has been influenced in different ways by the Chinese, Khmer, French and American cultures. For most Vietnamese people, connection to family and community is paramount - whether they are from rural villages or living in fast-paced cities.

Most festivals and holidays are spent with the extended family - participating in rituals, feasting on special foods, giving symbolic gifts and paying respects to ancestors. Most Vietnamese people practice a form of religion that is an interesting mix of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism, although there are also a large number of practising Catholics living in Vietnam.

Having endured the hardship that the Vietnam War brought in the 1960s and 1970s, most Vietnamese people are keen to get on with life, living with a sense of optimism and humility.

What kinds of accommodation will I have in Vietnam?

Travelling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavour to provide travellers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.  When travelling with us in Vietnam you may find yourself staying in a:

  • Overnight boat

Sleeping aboard a boat on Halong Bay is a quintessential Vietnamese experience to be savoured. Slip into relaxation mode as you take in stunning views of the surrounding limestone karst scenery.

Get acquainted with the Vietnamese way of life while on a memorable home stay. Be exposed to new languages, cuisine and customs while making friends with your hosts and neighbours.

What kinds of transport will I be using in Vietnam?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun. Depending on which trip you're on while in Vietnam, you may find yourself travelling by:

  • Overnight sleeper train

Travelling aboard an overnight sleeper train is a fun way to journey through Vietnam. Interact with other passengers or sit by a window and watch the world go by.

Curious? Click here read more about what to expect on an overnight train.

Take time to wave to locals as you cycle at a leisurely pace past rice paddies and through simple villages in rural Vietnam

These 3 wheeled vehicles are a great way to zip around the sights.

Is Vietnam a LGBTQIA+ friendly destination?

The LGBQTIA+ community is gradually gaining recognition in Vietnam, with gay pride parades becoming a regular occurrence and a lift on same-sex marriage bans in 2015. With that said, Vietnam is still a conservative culture and many still hide their sexuality from their families. Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi have some gay-friendly bars and events. It's generally recommended that both gay and straight couples resist showing public displays of affection.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Does my trip to Vietnam support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveller. Trips to Vietnam directly support our foundation partners, Blue Dragon Children's Foundation, Vun Art and WildAct .

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Blue Dragon Children's Foundation Blue Dragon Children's Foundation is helping disadvantaged youth in Vietnam, fighting the causes of human trafficking and (where possible) reuniting homeless or trafficked children with their families. Donations from our trips help their team of social workers, psychologists, teachers, and lawyers to offer individualised support to every child rescued.

Find out more or make a donation

Vun Art Vun Art empowers people with disabilities in Vietnam through vocational training and employment opportunities. They teach traditional folk painting using recycled materials which provides job opportunities, helps to preserve the ancient artform and cares for the local environment all at once. Donations from our trips support Vun Art's capacity-building programs for people with disabilities, including trainees' allowance, transportation, and equipment.

WildAct protects migratory birds of Vietnam and reduces illegal hunting by educating local communities about the importance of conservation. Donations from our trips help WildAct run educational programs to stop the illegal hunting of threatened migratory birds through knowledge-sharing in local communities.

Is Vietnam accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible , regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Despite having a high population of people with disabilities, accessible infrastructure and facilities are still limited in Vietnam. Chaotic traffic and pavements blocked by parked motorbikes and street stalls, uneven footpaths and high curbs add to the challenges of getting around for travellers with mobility or vision disabilities. Most entrances to hotels, shops, restaurants and tourist sites will have steps and many doorways will not be able to accommodate wheelchairs wider than 60cm. Some sights and destinations will not be fully accessible (ie. Ha Long Bay boats, Cu Chi Tunnels) but other places such as Hoi An are flat and much more wheelchair-friendly. There are likely to be situations where travellers with disabilities may need to rely on local people to help. Taxis are readily available and an affordable way to get around for travellers who are not confident in exploring independently on foot.

How do I stay safe and healthy while travelling?

Intrepid takes the health and safety of its travellers seriously and takes every measure to ensure that trips are safe, fun and enjoyable for everyone. We recommend that all travellers check with their government or national travel advisory organisation for the latest information before departure:

Vietnam Tours

Fresh exotic cuisine, the warmth and openness of the Vietnamese people, French colonial history, limestone islands, and beautiful beaches make Vietnam a delight to visit.

Have clothes tailored in the small colonial town of Hoi An, relax at the exclusive Six Senses Resorts in Nha Trang and Con Dao, cruise Halong Bay on a traditional junk, or the Mekong on a Bassac Boat. Visit the mountain retreat of Sapa to visit traditional hilltribe villages, and share home cooked meals with the locals. Visitors to Vietnam are overwhelmed by the sublime beauty of the country’s natural setting and traditional charm.

Hoi An Hoi An is a destination with two faces – the charming, old world trading post of narrow streets and traditional houses, and the beach with its beautiful resorts and long stretch of clean white sand. Sometimes called the “Venice of Vietnam” because of the narrow canals that cut through part of the town, Hoi An, is a favourite place for many travellers to Vietnam. It is worth spending a few days for its atmosphere, colourful streets decorated with lanterns, fantastic restaurants, good quality tailors and cooking schools.

Halong Bay Located in the Gulf of Tonkin the area includes over 1,600 islands and islets, forming a magical seascape of limestone pillars and breath taking caves. The islands (in mainly limestone and schist)  have unique formations of various graceful shapes, both familiar and strange, are now protected as a World Heritage site.

Mekong Delta A maze of rivers, swamps and islands, home to floating markets, small villages and rice paddies. An amazing variety of fruits, flowers and livestock are grown in the region which is best explored over a few days.

Hanoi Wide tree-lined boulevards skirt the misty lakes of the city and amongst it all are ancient temples and busy markets. Highlights of this city include the colourful and vibrant flower market, the shopper’s paradise in the “Old Quarter” and the up-market boutiques on Nah Tho Street.

Ho Chi Minh Previously known as Saigon, both locals and foreigners alike still call it this. Ho Chi Minh was greatly influenced by the French during their colonial occupation and the city’s architecture reflects this, so much so that the city is referred to as “Paris in the Orient”. Today, the city’s core is still adorned with wide elegant boulevards and historic French colonial buildings. With a population of over 9 million people (and 4 million motorbikes!), Saigon is also a dizzying jumble of street markets, shops, pavement cafes, stands-on-wheels and vendors selling wares spread out on sidewalks.

Vietnam enjoys a tropical climate with plenty of sunshine and average temperatures ranging from 22 to 27 degrees celcius. Vietnam has 2 distinct seasons.

May to October is characterised by hot, humid days with plenty of rainfall, while November to April is generally drier and slightly cooler.

The local climate varies from the north to the south of Vietnam, and weather patterns are also different in the mountain ranges, than on the coast.

Staff experiences

Vietnam has certainly become a popular spot for kiwis over recent years and I had to find out why! I found it was not only is it one of the best foodie destinations I’ve ever been to, it is also safe, friendly and offers travellers a great mix of culture & relaxation.

Our journey started in Saigon where the highlight was the Vespa night tour where a driver will take you through the narrow streets and insanely busy roundabouts – what a way to be part of the local traffic chaos! Stops were made along the way various street food vendors all keen to share their fabulous delicacies.

Traveling by train from Saigon to Danang was no means luxurious but a fun way to travel – I highly suggest booking a cabin to yourself to ensure a good night’s sleep. (I learnt this the hard way after a noisy and exhausting train journey in China)!

Upon arrival in Danang it was a 45 minute trip to the beautiful UNESCO town of Hoi An, where I was greeted with gorgeous lantern filled streets, incredible eateries and a relaxed atmosphere. This is the Vietnam I had dreamt of and was so glad I had booked a 5 night stay. The old town is for pedestrians only making it a pleasant place to explore on foot and you will quickly make friends with the local street vendors.

Days were spent enjoying cooking classes, bike riding through the rice paddies, walking along the river and enjoying fabulous food at the many beach eateries. There is so much to explore in Vietnam and everywhere you go locals will greet you with a warm friendly smile.

Useful information

Currency Vietnamese Dong (VND)

Language The official language is Vietnamese, with different dialects apparent throughout the country. A host of various languages particular to ethnic minorities are also spoken, as well as Chinese, English and French to a lesser degree.

Why we love it From grandiose villas and palaces built long ago by the French, wide boulevards, busy markets and misty lakes to glorious shopping and even more glorious food, Vietnam is a treat for every traveller. A day spent cruising quietly on a traditional junk around Halong Bay followed by a dip in the warm ocean waters and a freshly caught seafood lunch would be hard to beat. The northern mountain ranges are home to a number of diverse ethnic groups each with their own distinct cultural differences which we find fascinating and you must try to fit in a visit to the old town of Hoi An during the full moon festival each month – the streets come alive with colourful Chinese lanterns and locals celebrating the festival of light.

Weather Enjoying a tropical climate with plenty of sunshine and average temperatures ranging from 22C to 27C, Vietnam has two distinct seasons: May – October is characterised by hot, humid days with plenty of rainfall, while November – April is generally drier and slightly cooler. The local climate varies from the north to the south of Vietnam, and weather patterns are also different in the mountain ranges than on the coast.

Social customs & quirks The Vietnamese people are exceptionally friendly and outgoing – you had best prepare yourself for plenty of personal questions and comments regarding just about every aspect of your life. While this may seem a forthright quality, the Vietnamese themselves have a quiet reserve so it is best to allow the conversation to be guided by the person with whom you are speaking. They certainly never mean to be rude, especially about your weight (!!!) but as a nation of traditionally quite tiny people they are inevitably curious when they have the opportunity to speak with different cultures. With an extremely strong work ethic you will find the Vietnamese an industrious and hard working nation. The Vietnamese will be embarrassed by public displays of anger – a gracious smile will get you much further than temper in just about any situation.

Festivals & events Some festivals in Vietnam can trace their origins back to the Bronze Age and many are celebrated in tune with the land, harvests and changing of the seasons. The most important festival of the year is Tet, held in late Jan – early Feb marking the new lunar year and the advent of spring. The slightly less cheerful, Wandering Souls Day, is held in August, which allows people to make offerings of food and gifts to the wandering souls of the forgotten dead. Doan Ngu is a happy occasion in June where effigies are burnt to become soldiers in the god of death’s army. We prefer the beautiful full moon festivals held each month in Hoi An!

Health* Immunisations against diseases such as diphtheria, hepatitis A, tetanus and typhoid fever are recommended, but not compulsory. If coming from an infected area, a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required. Malarial prevention is recommended for visitors to Ca Mau and Bac Lieu provinces, some highland areas, and the Mekong and Tonkin Deltas. Please contact your health practitioner for full and current details.

Visas  NZ passport holders are required to obtain a tourist visa before entering Vietnam. Visa applications are currently processed in New Zealand.

Vietnam has been split into north and south far longer than it has been together   For those of us old enough to remember, or to at least have seen the movies, Vietnam was split in two – the north was the bad guys and the south was the good guys – or so they told us. For more than 40 years Vietnam has been reunified un...

When to visit: The best time to visit the north of Vietnam is from September to March when it's less humid and the sky is clear. In the south, December to April is warm and dry. Rainy seasons vary but are generally May to November in most areas. Please note that northern Vietnam including Hanoi can be cold in December and January, and in the highlands around Sapa at this time temperatures can drop to nearly freezing. Hoi An is subject to occasional fierce storms between late September and early December – its beach resorts are best between February and August.

Halong Bay is one of the scenic wonders of the world. Here the limestone landscape meets the sea to create one of the most stunning natural wonders on earth. It is truly breathtaking.

Saigon is the bustling, pulsating economic hub of the south and the modern face of Vietnam. It is a frenzy of activity but beneath this facade lies a city of history, culture and charm.

Mekong Delta

Known as the food bowl of Vietnam, the Mekong Delta is formed by the various streams and tributaries of the mighty Mekong River that split after a 4,350km journey through six countries.

Sapa & Northern Vietnam

Sapa and northern Vietnam are some of the least visited yet most beautiful parts of Vietnam. The area is home to a number of ethnic communities and meeting them is a special experience.

The ancient town of Hoi An is a great place to wander around. The cobble stoned streets, historical sites and old merchant buildings will have you stepping back to another time.

Vietnamese Street Food

Vietnam is a foodie’s paradise and no trip is complete without trying their street food. Walk to some of Hanoi’s best culinary hotspots with a food blogger and taste the best street eats.

Official travel advice is available by visiting the  SmartTraveller Website

Polite behaviour is highly valued in Vietnamese society. One of the most important dimensions of politeness is for the young to show respect to their elders. In everyday life, younger people show this respect by using hierarchical terms of address when interacting with their seniors. Younger people should also be the first to issue the common salutation  chao  when meeting someone older, should always invite their seniors to begin eating before they do, ask for permission to leave the house, announce their arrival when they return, and not dominate conversations or speak in a confrontational manner with their seniors. Vietnamese life revolves around the family and it is not uncommon for up to three generations to live together in the same house. People of different genders, especially if they are not married or related, should not have physical contact. In general woman are expected to maintain greater decorum than men by avoiding alcohol and tobacco, speaking quietly, and dressing modestly. In many public spaces, however, people often avoid standing in queues, resulting in a chaotic  environment where people touch or press up against one another as they go about their business. As with many other Asian societies, the concept of face is extremely important in Vietnamese society. It is important to be aware of unintentionally causing the loss of face so you need to be aware of your words and actions. Accusing someone of poor performance or reprimanding them in public will cause the loss of face. Complimenting them on their hospitality will give then face.

Communications

Country Code for Vietnam: + 84 Visa Global Assistance:  1 201-0288 // 888-710-7781 Emergency Services: Fire: 114 Police: 113 Ambulance: 115. The emergency services may not have English speaking staff. To avoid delay it may be best to seek the assistance of a Vietnamese speaker to call the emergency services.

Vietnamese people rise early and consider sleeping in to be a sure indication of illness. Offices, museums and many shops open between 7am and 8am and close between 4pm and 5pm. Post offices keep longer hours and are generally open from 6.30am to 9pm.

Generally, tipping is not expected in Vietnam, but is very much appreciated. Many Vietnamese workers do not earn much money and always appreciate the extra money to be made in tips. Tipping is an established practice in Vietnam. The amount is entirely a personal preference, however as a guideline USD 2-3 or its local equivalent in Vietnam dong per person, per half day (more for a full day) can be used. Of course you are free to tip more or less as you see fit, depending on your perception of the service quality and the length of your trip. Porters may be given around 20.000 VND per item. Restaurants: We suggest adding around 10,000 to 20,000 VND to your bill, depending on service; more for expensive establishments.

Getting Around

Though still a little rough around the edges, Vietnam’s transport network is continuing to improve. Most travel takes place on the roads, which are largely of decent quality surface-wise. The vehicles themselves are also pretty good, with air-conditioned coaches ferrying travellers (and an increasing number of locals) up and down Highway 1, a narrow and busy thoroughfare that runs from Hanoi to Saigon, passing through Hué, Da Nang and Nha Trang en-route. Off the main routes the vehicles are less salubrious. Trains run alongside Highway 1, and their sleeper berths are far more comfortable than buses for longer journeys. Lastly, the domestic flight network continues to evolve, and the cheap, comfortable services may save you days worth of travel by road or rail.

The official language is Vietnamese. Other languages widely spoken include English, French, Chinese and Khmer.

Enjoy a day at leisure. Perhaps savour a relaxing coffee, pop into the town for a stroll or even head to the beach.

DAY 8: Imperial Hue

Leave Hoi An for Hue, taking a scenic route over the Hai Van Pass. Visit the imposing Imperial Citadel and Forbidden Purple City. Later, visit the UNESCO World Heritage Royal Tomb of Minh Mang, a complex of 40 monuments set in surroundings of gardens and pools. Continue to the old Thien Mu Pagoda before taking a cruise on the Perfume River.

DAY 9: Explore Hanoi

Fly to Hanoi this morning. After lunch, enjoy a tour of the city, taking in the Ho Chi Minh Quarter, the One Pillar Pagoda and the Confucian Temple of Literature. End the day's explorations with a thrilling cyclo tour through Phan Dinh Phung street and the Old Quarter. Wrap up your ride with a strong Vietnamese coffee at a café overlooking St. Joseph's Cathedral.

DAY 10: Drive to Sapa

Travel to Sapa by coach through the Northern Highlands, arriving in the mid to late afternoon. Vast panoramas of stepped rice terraces ribbon their way across these hills; a testament to the extraordinary skills of the local farmers.

DAYS 11-12: Sapa

Spend the next two days discovering this verdant and beautiful area of rolling hills and rice terraces with some light walking through the surrounding valleys and villages, and visits to ethnic minority communities including those of the H'mong people.

Rise early to admire sunrise over the bay as you cruise back toward the port. Spend the morning cruising back to the pier for your return transfer to Hanoi. Enjoy a farewell dinner and attend a spectacular Vietnamese stage performance.
