About Faisalabad

Faisalabad is the third most populated city of Pakistan. It was called Lyallpur until 1977 when its name was changed in honour of the late Saudi king, Shah Faisal-bin-Abdul Aziz. It is also the second largest city of Punjab. Founded in 1880 by the British Lieutenant Governor of Punjab Sir Charles James Lyall, the city was named in his honour.

Today, Faisalabad is a major industrial hub and its road, rail and air networks allow for easy commute. The city is also known as the “Manchester of Pakistan” in reference to its booming textile industry, which is quite similar to Manchester’s. Another title given to Faisalabad is “City of Textiles,” for similar reasons.

Exploring Faisalabad can be a joy for those interested in its rich history. However, it is slightly off the beaten path and not many people are aware of the historical gems this city holds. Here, we’ll discuss how you can get to Faisalabad and what you can see there once you arrive.

Reaching Faisalabad

Being just 120 kilometres from Lahore and 360 kilometres from Islamabad, the M-3 Motorway connects the city of Faisalabad to the M-2 Motorway. However, the easiest way to reach the city, for both domestic and foreign travellers, is to take a flight directly to Faisalabad International Airport.

Places to Visit in Faisalabad

Once you reach the city, here are some of the most famous places of Faisalabad that are worth a visit:

The Clock Tower

Faisalabad’s Ghanta Ghar or Clock Tower is located within its city centre. The Clock Tower was founded in 1903 by Sir Charles Riwaz who was the British Lieutenant Governor of Punjab. It is an architectural marvel to behold. However, what’s unique about this site is not the clock tower itself, but the fact that an aerial view of the area forms the Union Jack, which is the British flag.

Surrounding the clock tower are 8 different markets, each named after an area or city that it is directed towards. These markets are:

Gatwala Park

Gatwala is a wildlife and forest preservation park that was established between the years 1985-1992. It is located 15 to 20 kilometres away from Faisalabad on the Faisalabad-Sheikhupura Road. Today, this park is a major picnic spot for the locals with boating, camping and other activities for families to enjoy. The park also has a wildlife breeding centre and lush green forests to enjoy.

A tour of Faisalabad offers its share of shopping opportunities. Among these is D Ground, which is the second most important commercial hub of the city. The semi-circle area of the D is divided between a park and the office of Radio Pakistan, while the roads forming the D are full of high-end shopping outlets and eateries. Tourists and locals alike can enjoy themselves here.

Jinnah Garden

Named after the Father of the Nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Jinnah Garden is actually the final resting place of Sir Charles James Lyall. It is one of the central parks of the city and is also known to the locals as “Company Bagh.”

Qaisery Gate

Qaisery Gate is located at the outer edge of Rail Bazaar. A straight walk through the bazaar can lead you to the Clock Tower and the 7 adjacent markets. It was built in the late 1800s during the British Rule and is well preserved to this date.

Gumti Water Fountain

Built in front of the Qaisery Gate, Gumti Fountain is another structure that has withstood the test of time from the early 1800s to date. While it has now become a busy intersection for traffic, it was once a designated spot for town meetings. The fountain is still in working condition today.

Lyallpur Museum

Faisalabad has a rich history attached to the name Lyallpur and there’s no better place to witness it than visiting the Lyallpur Museum. As a heritage museum, it preserves the history and culture associated with the area within its walls.

How are hotel rooms designed? Here's how Hilton gets guest spaces check-in ready.

As I walked down the halls of the upcoming Printing House Downtown Nashville , Tennessee, hotel, I stepped around cardboard boxes and cables. But as I entered a guest room on the 11th floor in late April as part of a hard hat tour, the dusty concrete floors gave way to clean, wide planks of hardwood.

The space featured a bed with a backlit headboard, a desk and matching chair in a walnut finish, and brass midcentury accents. While the rest of the Tapestry Collection by Hilton property – expected to open in August – was still a construction site, this room looked nearly finished.

That’s part of Hilton’s hotel room design process. The company often creates models of the spaces on site to test them out well before guests arrive. “You don't want to fix a mistake or something that you may have overlooked 300 times,” Larry Traxler, senior vice president of global Design at Hilton, told USA TODAY. “It's better to do it once in that model room stage, which is why they're so important.”

But that’s just one of many steps that go into getting a hotel room ready for check-in.

How are Hilton hotel rooms designed?

That depends on the type of property. Hilton’s megacategory brands – such as the budget-friendly Spark or the extended-stay LivSmart Studios – are designed using brand prototypes.

“We'll build model rooms, we'll prototype (furniture, fixtures and equipment),” said Traxler. “We’ll build 15 versions of a chair, a lounge chair, or the bed headboard, and work through all the details and select the best one.” 

For many other hotels – ranging from DoubleTree to luxury brands like Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts – Traxler said “everything is bespoke.”

They start with the most typical rooms – usually king and double rooms, which constitute the widest array – “because if we can really detail that room well, that will solve the most case uses throughout the hotel.” The designs can then be tweaked as needed for other categories like suites or to accommodate factors such as column locations.

Once they have the first layouts, they begin “layering in color (and) materials,” which may differ depending on the property’s location.

“For instance, if we're designing for a seaside coastal location, we're going to approach design very differently than we would for a mountain resort location, and very different than an airport location where the average length of stay may be one night,” Traxler said.

The team also considers guest expectations and the brand identity. Hilton has brand standards that every hotel must meet, but there is creative wiggle room within those parameters.

The Printing House, for example, takes inspiration from the history of Nashville’s printing industry. In the early 1900s, Printers Alley – located less than a mile from the hotel – serviced 13 publishers and 10 printers , and the city is home to the legendary Hatch Show Print letterpress print shop, which has been operating since 1879.

That theme will be evident throughout the property. The guest rooms will feature custom Hatch Show Print artwork, while the hotel’s tile and finish patterns incorporate a geometric stamp design – as do panels on its exterior – among other touches.

Jenna Hackett, Hilton’s senior vice president of Lifestyle Brand Management, said at properties like the Printing House, a hotel room “needs to be a continuation of the story.”

How long do hotel rooms take to design?

Getting a model room design down on paper can take six to 12 months. Procuring the product can take an additional two to six months, as many of the pieces are custom. “You know, they have to make the carpet, they make the light fixtures,” Traxler said. (Renovation design typically moves faster than a new construction project.)

Model rooms are then constructed on-site if the project is far enough along or at an offsite warehouse. In the latter cases, they try to replicate the setting of the actual hotel. “We would build the plumbing riser, the structural bay would be exactly the same, the window size,” he said. They also work to replicate the lighting and adhere to film the window to give a sense of the view guests would see.

The installation takes around three to four weeks. “Then we move in, and we tear it apart,” he said.

They thoroughly test the room to see if anything doesn’t work, from the door swings to the power outlet locations. If the model room is in a hotel, they even stay overnight when possible to see how it looks at different times of day.

Where do Hilton hotels get their furniture?

Nearly all the furniture Hilton uses in its hotel rooms is custom-built. “We almost never buy things running stock unless we're in a pinch,” Traxler said.

The furniture is tailored to the room. The items may also be smaller than those found in a residential setting “because our rooms and our hotels are frequently asked to do more than our bedrooms at home – unless we live in a studio apartment in Manhattan.”

How have hotel room designs changed?

As the way guests use hotel rooms changes, so do the room designs. Access to power for electronic devices, for instance, is crucial. “Five years ago, it was important, but now it's imperative,” said Traxler.

They also consider how travelers often use hotel rooms as secondary offices and take Zoom calls during their stays. “So, we have to think about (the) backdrop and what does it look like within that guest room, and how do we create a seamless way of having somebody use that room without having to make their bed and put all of their luggage away?”

The “added social nature of how rooms are being used today” may mean occupants find a settee for two rather than a single lounge chair. The company is also thinking about how to offer more fitness and wellness opportunities (some Tempo by Hilton hotel rooms feature Peloton bikes, for example).

“If you're with 200 people at a conference, you may not feel comfortable heading down to the gym at 7 o'clock before the 9 o'clock start, but you want to get something in,” Traxler said.

Guest expectations are also high today, he added, regardless of what kind of hotel they’re staying in.

“It doesn’t matter if they're spending $500 or $5,000 a night, they demand good light, they demand thoughtful art, they demand nice textures and a comfortable seat,” he said. Traxler attributed that to social media and how word travels if a hotel room is not up to par.

That raises the bar on the design. “It's gotten harder, but it's also gotten a lot more fun.”

Soccer sensation Alex Morgan is always dashing around, whether it’s showing off her skillful speed on the field or jet-setting for the sport about 200 days a year. And of course, it's all while capturing the World Cup title with the U.S. Women’s National Team in Canada in 2015 and France in 2019, and scoring Olympic gold in London in 2012 and bronze in Tokyo in 2021 in the process.

So it's especially crucial for her to balance out her high-adrenaline career with some serious zen on the road.

“I always try to travel with a candle in my hotel room,” she told Travel + Leisure on a recent Zoom call. “That reminds me of home, so I always do that.”

Additionally, she always makes time for reading.

“After traveling, you’re exhausted and the last thing I want to deal with is watching a high-stress show, so I calm it down and read a book,” the 34-year-old said of her Amazon Kindle always being loaded up with books , recently having read Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale — which she admitted made her cry a couple times.  

Sticking with the low-tech vibe, Morgan also opts for a notebook to mark down anything important.

“If I’m having an important conversation on the phone or if I just went through a day traveling, I jot down things I need to remember to do,” she said. “Being able to write that down physically makes me see it as important.“

But above all, staying physically healthy by taking her vitamins is a major priority for the captain of the San Diego Wave FC , which is why she’s teamed up with Nature Made on its new Pickle- Flavored Multivitamin Gummies .  

“While you’re traveling, you might not be able to continue your eating habits as well, so that's why it's even more important for me to keep up on my vitamins,” she said.

Being a pickle fan for as long as she can remember — she prefers dill over sweet, and spears over chips, but will go for fried pickle chips — the new flavor brings a fresh twist to the daily regime. 

Plus she now has a special helper keeping her on top of her daily vitamins, her 4-year-old daughter Charlie. 

“My daughter is very adamant on us taking our vitamins,” Morgan said. “She always reminds me every morning because she's excited to get them out of the vitamin box. She loves figuring out what day it is.”

In fact, her daughter has been accompanying her for at least half of her travels, starting when she was just four months old. Born early in the pandemic in May 2020, Morgan was anxious to get back to soccer ahead of the Tokyo Olympics and spontaneously decided to go to England, where leagues had started up again when Charlie was just four months old.

“We had to get her passport within 24 hours and she moved with me to London, so that was her first big trip,” she explained. 

The baby stayed calm, thanks to “a lot of breastfeeding and swaddling, and just keeping her in close contact with me.” That early training prepped her properly. “Now she knows she gets one candy every travel day, and unlimited iPad time — that’s the one and only time she can play her games and watch her shows,” the mom of one said. “So she’s a total pro.”

Of course, when Morgan travels, her head is always in the game. Of the three Olympics she’s played so far — London in 2012, Rio de Janeiro in 2016, and the delayed Tokyo Games in 2021, London was a favorite. The matches were all over the UK, including in some historic stadiums.

“We got to play at Old Trafford , which is where Manchester United plays,” the soccer forward said. “That's where we ended up winning our semi final game against Canada to make it to the final — that's definitely a core memory for me.”

She thinks Tokyo would have been a favorite too (“It’s so beautiful!) but Covid restrictions made it feel more isolating. And of course, if all goes according to plan, she’ll be heading back to her fourth Games this summer in Paris. 

“I think that Paris just has really good coffee on every corner, which I love,” the California native said. “Their pastries are beautiful to look at — sometimes I don't even feel like eating a pastry, but they're just so beautiful!” 

She’s also excited for her family to revisit France because they so enjoyed their trip during the 2019 World Cup, especially visiting the Champagne region. 

“We don't get to do too much outside of play — neither do I want to because I'm so focused — so I live vicariously through them,” said the co-founder of sports media and commerce company TogetherX , along with fellow female athletes Chloe Kim, Simone Manuel, and Sue Bird. “But just knowing that my daughter and my husband are going to have these experiences together really fills my heart.” 

By now, she’s used to missing out, understanding it’s part of the job. “They wouldn't even be there experiencing these really amazing things and these great different cultures, if not for me being there, competing on the world stage,” she said. “So I think it's just a give-and-take situation.”

But there is one spot she looks forward to taking her daughter when she’s off the clock. “My husband is from Mexico, so I would just love to take her to more Mexican destinations that I haven't visited as frequently either,” Morgan said. “Mexico City just has a great food culture and sightseeing, so that would be a great trip for us.”

KUALA LUMPUR: With the May 31 deadline for employers to bring foreign workers into Malaysia, over 30,000 Bangladeshi workers approved to travel here will not make it in time.

According to Bangladeshi news portal Kaler Kantho, data from the Bangladesh Manpower Employment and Training Bureau (BMET), under the Expatriate Welfare Ministry, reveals that the last green light for workers to travel to Malaysia was granted on May 21.

The report said that although approvals ceased after this date, additional clearance was granted for another 1,112 workers.

As a result, only 1,500 of the approved workers will be able to officially travel to Malaysia on deadline day, cancelling the plans of the remaining 31,701 workers still in Bangladesh.

KL International Airport (KLIA) terminals are facing congestion, with approximately 20,000 workers from 14 countries, including about 5,000 from Bangladesh, stranded within the two terminals awaiting employer identification, said the report.

"Amid concerns of workers being left stranded, attempts to communicate with employers have failed."

One anonymous source told the report: "We never talked about sending workers back. However, due to the excessive crowd, it's challenging to locate them. We need time for this."

To handle the influx of migrant workers, Malaysia's Immigration Department has increased the number of immigration officers on duty, opened additional counters, and provided food and water to the waiting workers.

There have also been complaints regarding agencies selling flight tickets at inflated prices as the market closes.

Malaysia had responded to a letter from the United Nations that stated Bangladeshi workers were being required to pay a significant recruitment fee of between US$4,500 to US$6,000 (RM21,000 to RM28,000) per person, which violates the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between the two countries in 2021 that capped the fee at US$720 (RM3,386).

The letter had highlighted allegations of a criminal network cheating Bangladeshi workers out of gainful employment, and instead fraudulently recruiting them for fake companies.

Abul Bashar, president of the Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies, said workers were suffering financial losses due to not being able to travel to Malaysia.

The association, he said, had discussed extending the programme for one or two months to allow all workers to travel with the Bangladeshi government.

Expatriate Welfare and Foreign Employment Ministry deputy secretary (employment) Gazi Md Shahed Anwar said a future meeting is scheduled to address the issue, according to the report.

Slow warp —

New warp drive concept does twist space, doesn’t move us very fast, while it won't make a useful spaceship engine, it may tell us more about relativity..

A team of physicists has discovered that it’s possible to build a real, actual, physical warp drive and not break any known rules of physics. One caveat: the vessel doing the warping can’t exceed the speed of light, so you’re not going to get anywhere interesting any time soon. But this research still represents an important advance in our understanding of gravity.

Moving without motion

Einstein’s general theory of relativity is a toolkit for solving problems involving gravity that connects mass and energy with deformations in spacetime. In turn, those spacetime deformations instruct the mass and energy how to move. In almost all cases, physicists use the equations of relativity to figure out how a particular combination of objects will move. They have some physical scenario, like a planet orbiting a star or two black holes colliding, and they ask how those objects deform spacetime and what the subsequent evolution of the system should be.

But it’s also possible to run Einstein’s math in reverse by imagining some desired motion and asking what kind of spacetime deformation can make it possible. This is how the Mexican physicist Miguel Alcubierre discovered the physical basis for a warp drive—long a staple of the Star Trek franchise.

The goal of a warp drive is to get from A to B in the time between commercial breaks, which typically involves faster-than-light motion. But special relativity expressly forbids speeds faster than light. While this never bothered the writers of Star Trek , it did irritate Alcubierre. He discovered that it was possible to build a warp drive through a clever manipulation of spacetime, arranging it so that space in front of a vessel gets scrunched up and the space behind the vessel stretched out. This generates motion without, strictly speaking, movement.

It sounds like a contradiction, but that’s just one of the many wonderful aspects of general relativity. Alcubierre’s warp drive avoids violations of the speed-of-light limit because it never moves through space; instead space itself is manipulated to, in essence, bring the spacecraft’s destination closer to it.

While tantalizing, Alcubierre’s design has a fatal flaw. To provide the necessary distortions of spacetime, the spacecraft must contain some form of exotic matter, typically regarded as matter with negative mass. Negative mass has some conceptual problems that seem to defy our understanding of physics, like the possibility that if you kick a ball that weighs negative 5 kilograms, it will go flying backwards, violating conservation of momentum. Plus, nobody has ever seen any object with negative mass existing in the real Universe, ever.

These problems with negative mass have led physicists to propose various versions of “energy conditions” as supplements to general relativity. These aren’t baked into relativity itself, but add-ons needed because general relativity allows things like negative mass that don’t appear to exist in our Universe—these energy conditions keep them out of relativity’s equations. They’re scientists’ response to the unsettling fact that vanilla GR allows for things like superluminal motion, but the rest of the Universe doesn’t seem to agree.

Warp factor zero

The energy conditions aren’t experimentally or observationally proven, but they are statements that concord with all observations of the Universe, so most physicists take them rather seriously. And until recently, physicists have viewed those energy conditions as making it absolutely 100 percent clear that you can’t build a warp drive, even if you really wanted to.

But there is a way around it, discovered by an international team of physicists led by Jared Fuchs at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. (The team is also affiliated with the Applied Propulsion Laboratory of Applied Physics, a virtual think tank dedicated to the research of, among many other things, warp drives.) In a paper accepted for publication in the journal Classical and Quantum Gravity , the researchers dug deep into relativity to explore if any version of a warp drive could work.

The equations of general relativity are notoriously difficult to solve, especially in complex cases such as a warp drive. So the team turned to software algorithms; instead of trying to solve the equations by hand, they explored their solutions numerically and verified that they conformed to the energy conditions.

The team did not actually attempt to construct a propulsion device. Instead, they explored various solutions to general relativity that would allow travel from point to point without a vessel undergoing any acceleration or experiencing any overwhelming gravitational tidal forces within the vessel, much to the comfort of any imagined passengers. They then checked whether these solutions adhered to the energy conditions that prevent the use of exotic matter.

The researchers did indeed discover a warp drive solution: a method of manipulating space so that travelers can move without accelerating. There is no such thing as a free lunch, however, and the physicality of this warp drive does come with a major caveat: the vessel and passengers can never travel faster than light. Also disappointing: the fact that the researchers behind the new work don’t seem to bother with figuring out what configurations of matter would allow the warping to happen.
