When to consider replacing the fuel pump?

  • Check engine light is on. Sometimes a fuel pump will fail slowly, and that means the fuel pressure and volume slowly degrades. The lack of fuel may result in the engine operating without enough fuel relative to the amount of air, causing the check engine light to appear.
  • Whirring noise from fuel tank. As a fuel pump fails, you may notice a whirring or humming noise coming from the fuel tank area, toward the rear of the car. If the noise is from the fuel pump, failure of the pump is often imminent and you should replace the fuel pump at your earliest convenience.

How do mechanics replace the fuel pump?

  • The fuel pump is tested to be sure it isn’t functioning.
  • Should the fuel pump be faulty, it is removed from the tank through an access panel above the tank in the passenger compartment.
  • When no access panel exists, fuel is first drained from the tank and then the fuel tank must be lowered from the vehicle to gain access to the pump.
  • In all cases, fuel pump supply and return hoses, as well as EVAP system hoses, and electrical connections to the pump must be removed.
  • Once the pump is out, any reusable brackets and pick up screens are attached to the new pump, then the new pump is installed.
  • If the fuel system uses an in-line external filter, a filter is often replaced. All hoses and electrical connections are re-established.
  • Fuel is added to the tank and the engine is run to test for leaks.

Is it safe to drive with a fuel pump problem?

Usually, it’s still safe to drive, but the pump may lead to an overheated engine and catalytic converter. Complete fuel pump failure can leave you stranded out on the road, but many times a car won’t start before initially driving.

However, if the fuel pump problem involves leaks of gasoline or vapors, it is unsafe to continue driving, and should immediately be checked by a qualified mechanic.

When replacing the fuel pump keep in mind:

  • Prior to replacing, the mechanic will power the fuel pump directly to confirm that the issue is a failed pump versus a faulty power supply to the pump.
  • Unless the fuel filter was replaced recently, whenever the fuel pump is replaced a new fuel filter should be installed.
  • When failing earlier than expected, the power supply should be verified because a voltage drop in the fuel pump circuit can lead to overheating.
  • Should the fuel tank be lowered during the repair, the fuel tank straps and fasteners should be checked for excessive corrosion and replaced as needed.
  • The fuel in the gas tank cools and lubricates the fuel pump. After installation of a new fuel pump, it’s wise to keep the gas tank at least a quarter full to maximize the life of a new fuel pump.

I have replaced the fuel pump twice on my 92 Grand Voyager. The first time I also had to replace the fuel tank because of a pin hole sized rust hole in the tank under one of the mounting straps. I bought new from Chrysler the mounting bolts, j clips, and straps that hold the tank. Also I replaced all of the rubber hoses with new hoses that can handle the ethanol based fuels. I used a Delphi pump the second time around.

Empty the tank as much as you can for easier handling/maneuvering. Don't let it hang by hoses or the filler neck, always support it from underneath. Plastic hose nozzles and components can be very brittle and break off easily. If you can look inside the tank, check for debris and corrosion. Clean or replace the tank and/or straps as necessary.  

Under the straps holding the fuel tank is where it can hold moisture. Once you get the tank removed, take a good look at the metal tank where the straps were and inspect for rust and possibly any holes.

Agree with Allan in reference to Airtex fuel pumps. Local shop calls them "yo-yo's" as in put them in and take them out. When the fuel pump failed on my '06 Ram 1500 he installed a Carter fuel pump (he's never had one come back) though it did take a day to get the part (supplier out of state). All the local suppliers have Airtex pumps readily available.  

The shop that did the fuel pump for me last year put in aa Delpi pump claiming it was OEM.

I have found that Denso, Bosch and Carter are all good brands. You do get what you pay for. But be careful with Rockauto, I ordered a Denso once and a Carter pump was in the box. They said they thought Carter made it for Denso. But they charged $30 more for the Denso than the Carter, so I protested and they refunded the price difference. The Carter pump has been fine.  

Well attempted to remove the tank but only got as far as trying to remove the fuel lines, the black plastic clips will not move, I cleaned then with brake cleaner to get the road grime off, sprayed with WD-40, nothing, they won’t budge, I had no trouble with the same fuel connections that are under the hood but they are out of the weather. Any tips out there before I buy a tool I will hardly use to do the job. Thanks again

Brake cleaner is bad on plastic. You screwed up IMHO. Generally you have to push the connection inward with some authority while releasing the clips. Lower the tank barely enough to reach the connections. I had a '96 that I replaced the pump on twice. I've fought your battle!  

Few of us have been in your shoes. Several years ago I had to change pump on my 97 Caravan. It took me almost week, due to rain, broken strips, and replacement pump was defective (just my luck). Did I mention I got two parking tickets for street cleaning? Tuesday and Thursday, $45 a shot, lol.

Well the job is done, new pump, new hoses, new filler neck grommet, new fuel filter, all went well, that lisle tool I mentioned above worked great, lots of lubricant and cussing helped me get them off. The video link above that AllanC showed me helped a lot! For the rest of it I just winged it, I ended up getting a Carter Pump, doing some research I come to find that Airtex makes some pumps for Carter and others, my Carter Pump is the same as the Airtex Pump, Airtex lists the pumps they make that are branded under different names. I’m hoping to get at least 5 years on this pump, I don’t believe it will last 24 years like the original did. So thank you all for your input I appreciate it! And unfortunately when installing the pump I still had to deal with the rain, fun fun and the funny thing is these past 3 to 4 days have been sunny and warm, of course when the job is done. I must add I cleaned the outside and inside of tank, the inside of the tank looked like brand new, not bad for 24 years. Once again thanks you guys!

Russia’s BN800 fast reactor fully fuelled with mox

MOX fuel assemblies within the BN-800 fast reactor core

Beloyarsk 4 was connected to the grid and resumed electricity production after the completing its latest regular maintenance and refuelling outage. It was refuelled with mox fuel assemblies (FAs) produced at the Mining and Chemical Combine (MCC) in Zheleznogorsk, Krasnoyarsk Territory). Unlike the enriched uranium FAs traditionally used in NPPs, the raw materials for the production of mox fuel pellets includes plutonium oxide obtained during the processing of used fuel from conventional VVER reactors alongside depleted uranium oxide, obtained by defluorination of depleted uranium hexafluoride (DUHF – “tails" from enrichment production).

The first serial mox-FAs were loaded into the BN-800 core in January 2020. The first complete refuelling of the BN-800 with mox fuel took place in January 2021, and then, over the next two refuellings, all fuel assemblies were gradually replaced with innovative mox assemblies.

Other important work performed during the outage of unit 4 included overhaul of the main circulation pump with the replacement of the removable parts, maintenance and repair of pumps, heat exchangers, steam generators and a turbogenerator. Also, the operational quality control of metal and welded joints of pipelines was carried out as well as tests of the system for monitoring the tightness of shells using a metrological assembly.

“Today, Beloyarsk NPP is one of the flagships bringing the Russian nuclear industry closer to a new technological platform based on a closed nuclear fuel cycle,” said Beloyarsk NPP Director Ivan Sidorov. “The use of mox fuel will make it possible to increase the fuel base of the nuclear power industry tenfold. And most importantly, in the BN-800 reactor, after appropriate processing, used nuclear fuel from other NPPs can be recycled.”

Alexander Ugryumov, Senior Vice President for Scientific and Technical Activities at TVEL said completing conversion of BN-800 to mox fuel is a long-awaited event for the nuclear industry. “For the first time in the history of the Russian nuclear power industry, we will be able to operate a fast neutron reactor with a full load of uranium-plutonium fuel and a closed nuclear fuel cycle. This is exactly the milestone for which the BN-800 was originally designed, a unique nuclear power unit supported by automated fuel production at the Mining and Chemical Combine. Advanced technologies for recycling nuclear materials will significantly expand the raw material base of nuclear energy by processing irradiated fuel instead of storing it, and it will also reduce the amount of waste generated.”  

Industrial fabrication of mox fuel began at the end of 2018 at the MCC. To create this unique production, broad industry cooperation was organised under the coordination and scientific leadership of TVEL, which also acts as the supplier of mox FAs for the Beloyarsk NPP. Initially, during the start-up of the BN-800 reactor, a hybrid core was installed, partly equipped with uranium fuel produced by Mashinostroitelny Zavod in Elektrostal (Moscow Region), and partly with experimental mox fuel assemblies manufactured at the Research Institute of Atomic Reactors in Dimitrovgrad, Ulyanovsk region.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
