"A-Z" is an exciting new group that reunites Fates Warning vocalist Ray Alder with Warlord and former Fates Warning drummer, the legendary Mark Zonder.
Joined by Philip Bynoe (Warlord, Steve Vai, Nuno Bettencourt) on bass, Joop Wolters (Steve Walsh, Simon Phillips) on guitar and Vivien Lalu on keys the band have a melodic, progressive and deep sound, bringing to mind the classic era of Fates Warning albums like "Parallels" and "Pleasant Shade Of Grey" while recalling the hooks and melodies of Journey.

A-Z – A-Z (Album Review)
Review of the debut album from A-Z featuring Ray Alder & Mark Zonder.
by Kyle Graves
What do you get when you take two of the greatest prog musicians of all time, throw in some equally amazing players and write modern-yet-classic sounding songs with crisp production? You get A-Z, the new band featuring Ray Alder & Mark Zonder from the legendary Fates Warning. While you might expect an uber technical progressive metal offering, the guys went in a different direction (and isn’t that a key tenet of the prog genre?).
What this is NOT, in the strictest sense, is prog. What it IS can certainly be classified as “prog adjacent” or at minimum, a great sounding melodic hard rock album with progressive undertones. And given the band members’ pedigree, it’s not surprising that it contains at least some of those elements.
Rounding out the lineup you have the supremely talented, and 3 time Grammy nominated Philip Bynoe (Steve Vai) on bass, the namesake & keyboard wizard of French prog band Lalu, Vivien Lalu and the Dutch prog/jazz fusion guitarist Joop Wolters. If not yet household names, each one is certainly highly regarded in the prog genre. The musical chemistry between all these players is undeniable on the A-Z debut.
Mark Zonder is unparalleled in the drumming world. He has developed his style over many decades & his choice of patterns & fills on A-Z is singularly unique. What really makes him stand out here is his ability to never self-indulge, but instead to play what’s best for the song. He chooses distinct & different phrasing for each track which gives a fresh overall feel to the album.
As for Alder’s vocals on this debut, they really shine in a way we haven’t seen in his long career. His amazing work with Redemption & his 2019 solo release speak for themselves, but perhaps not being limited to a “progressive metal” format has freed him up to explore other areas of his voice with A-Z. On first listen the presence of his harmony & backing vocals really stand out. To my ears this is very reminiscent of his work on the “Parallels” and “Inside Out” albums.
Straight outta the gate, the thing that jumps out of the speakers is melody. The first track and second single “Trial by Fire” is the perfect opener for the album. Zonder’s drumming is instantly recognizable. It is technical yet has groove. The song has a chorus and hook that wouldn’t be out of line on a Journey album, in the best way. The next track “The Far Side of the Horizon” takes things in a heavier direction but still keeps the melodic approach.
The songs throughout are diverse, riffy, edgy, moody, memorable and yes, MELODIC! The hooks get in your head and you’ll likely find yourself singing a new favorite song every other day. Contrast an absolute burner of a song like “The Machine Gunner” with the beautiful uptempo ballad “Rise Again” and you’ll see what I mean.
As you journey through this diverse album, you’ll get musical hints of Toto, GTR and even the more memorable commercial output from Yes in the 1980’s. But I can’t emphasize enough how modern it comes across, never sounding dated or retro. At times you’ll hear jazzy elements, heavy moments and even an AOR sound in several songs. The debut album from A-Z is a fantastic & fresh sounding first effort from these seasoned professionals. Let’s hope there are many more to come!

A-Z – A-Z Review
In a number of ways yes, A-Z totally succeed in writing some killer heavy metal/hard rock material. Accompanied by Philip Bynoe (bassist for Warlord and Steve Vai ), French composer Vivien Lalu on keys, and Lalu’s guitarist/solo artist Joop Walters, the band flex their muscles across all eleven tracks. The opening trio of “Trial by Fire,” “The Far Side of the Horizon,” and “The Machine Gunner” are superb metal cuts loaded with big guitars, bombastic drum fills, and hard-rocking vocals. All three of these tracks, each with their own unique redeeming qualities, can and should be featured on plenty of metal playlists. While most of the tracks are up-tempo, the band knows how to tone it down as well with the ballad-like “Rise Again” and the slow-burning “Stranded,” both being effective change-ups and demonstrating the group’s diverse songwriting abilities.
With the prog metal pedigree here one might expect that style to rear its head on occasion, but it really doesn’t. Restraint is key across A-Z , with the band displaying a high level of talent while keeping overt noodling in check. Wolters drops a number of excellent guitar solos, and Zonder’s fills remain complex but not distracting. The key to A-Z ’s success isn’t the musical complexity, though; in fact, it is the relatively simple yet effective arrangements combined with the classic, memorable vocal hooks that will keep listeners coming back. With Zonder producing the overall album, and each member responsible for recording their own parts (the members live in different countries), the songs sound excellent and the mix is aggressive and engaging.
Alder and Zonder both play on my favorite Fates Warning album, the excellent yet underrated Disconnected . On that album, Zonder’s drumming is absolutely mind-blowing, and even here in a more conventional format he kills it. Whether it’s the subtle cowbell on opener “Trial By Fire,” the Simmons drum fills on “The Far Side of the Horizon,” or just his overall killer groove, the man has it. And what can be said about Ray Alder? He sounded tired nine years ago on Darkness in a Different Light , but since then his voice has gotten stronger and stronger, and here he belts it out hard, hitting every note and wail perfectly. His voice is aging better than fine wine, and I love it. Add in tasteful arrangements from Lalu, rock-solid bass playing by Bynoe, and some stellar solos from Wolters and you end up with a cohesive unit that fires on all cylinders.
I have yet to hear all of the upcoming Kings of Mercia album, but one wouldn’t be out of line wondering why Fates Warning didn’t just put out a metal album. As it stands, and assuming the Matheos project will also be of high quality, we will be left with two outstanding metal albums. A-Z has set the bar high with this album, as there isn’t a single song on it that I’ve skipped once over the past month. There’s skill, variety, strong songwriting, and consistently strong performances across the entire 51 minutes. Top it all off with that amazing Hugh Syme cover and you’ve got a hands-down winner.

A R I Z O N A is a wonderful band last night was my 8th time seeing their show each and every show I have been too was amazing, and last night was no exception every single time I see them they just keep getting better and better every single time. There is so much hard work that goes on in putting on a show and they never shy away from going above and beyond. These guys show was amazing from beginning to end it was full of love, passion, and unbelievable talent. The hour and 15 minute set was unbelievable i recommend if you haven't heard or checked them out do so now you won't be sorry. These guys are so sweet, caring, humble and just a bunch of characters. When you listen to their music you will catch yourself bopping along and singing or instantly put in a better mood the visuals in the show made me emotional but it was tears of joy and pride to see how far they have come out of a project that was started as a what the hell why not project when they were burned out on being producers they gave it a shot and blew up to what they are today these guys deserve so much more credit than they get these guys have so much to offer i encourage everyone to at least give them a chance.

ALBUM REVIEW: A-Z – A-Z
Considering the history of some of its band members, it is of no surprise at all that A-Z have a highly melodic, at times progressive take on AOR, with Ray Alder and Mark Zonder – most notably both being important members of FATES WARNING over their storied careers – being 40% of the line up of this new act. While the ensemble may be new in terms of being an entity in itself, their vast experience and demand for production values shine through in this rather enjoyable debut. Alder has always had a sumptuous voice and it’s a testament to him that he has lost none of this vocal talent across his career, with his soaring vocals being an essential part of this release. His timbre resonates exquisitely along with the highly melodic guitar and synth tones. Bringing in Vivien Lalu on keys seems to have been a masterstroke in itself, with his skill as a composer in his own right – as well being the son of two members of POLENE – as well as his own progressive metal act LALU meaning he is clearly well versed in what Alder and company were looking for.
The production values are as exquisite as you would expect from FATES WARNING themselves, with high attention to detail across the release. There is even enough drop-off in the quieter moments of the record that the most delicate aspects of the music can even take centre stage themselves, leading to an almost dreamy feel of being pulled along by the music on a rollercoaster trip in a comforting head fog of soundscapes surrounding you.
In terms of the songs themselves, it would be fair to compare them to the likes of QUEENSRYCHE , in that darker, highly progressively-charged AOR sound that separated them from a lot of their contemporaries. A few listens will be needed to properly appreciate the depth of some of the writing, as it is far too easy to get sucked into Alder ‘s vocals, the guitar lines, or the keys in fairly equal measure, to the point you almost lose track of what else is happening in the song.
This is an excellent release on its own merit, with the heady weight of some top-quality releases between them all over the duration of their careers. Indeed, it almost feels like this is standard fare for the gentlemen involved in it, but when they have consistently set the bar so high for themselves in the past, their version of standard is not on a par with a lot of other artists who are releasing music, but several rungs above. A fantastic release that shows a high degree of promise in its debut showing – it will be interesting to hear how the follow-up to this pans out.

Celebrating their 50th anniversary, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame members Aerosmith have sold more than 150 million albums around the world, produced genre-defining music videos such as “Amazing,” “Crazy,” “Janie’s Got A Gun,” “Livin’ On The Edge,” and “Love In An Elevator,” and launched extravagant record-shattering global tours, most recently with their smash hit Las Vegas residency. The band has broken numerous boundaries, including becoming the first rock band with a massive commercially successful hip-hop collaboration with Run DMC on “Walk This Way” and the first hard rock band to appear during a Super Bowl Halftime Show with their 2001 performance, and in 1999, Aerosmith became the first band to have their own themed attraction at Disney World in Florida and later Paris with the launch of the Rock ‘N’ Roller coaster starring Aerosmith. About The Black Crowes
The Black Crowes are leaving the bullshit in the past. 15 years after their last album of original music, the Robinson Brothers present Happiness Bastards – their 10th studio album. Some may say the project has been several tumultuous years in the making, but we argue it’s arriving at just the right time. Call it brotherly love or music destiny that brought them back together, the highly anticipated record consecrating the reunion of this legendary band just may be the thing that saves rock & roll. In a time where the art form is buried beneath the corporate sheen of its successors, The Black Crowes are biting back with the angst of words left unsaid penned on paper and electrified by guitar strings, revealing stripped, bare-boned rock & roll. No gloss, no glitter, just rhythm and blues at its very best – gritty, loud, and in your face. Since The Black Crowes reunited in 2019, they’ve made a triumphant return to form with over 150 shows spanning 20 countries worldwide, celebrating the 30th anniversary of Shake Your Money Maker , the album that put them on the map. The Robinson Brothers and longtime bassist Sven Pipien headed to the studio with producer Jay Joyce in early 2023 and the experiences of years past transcribed themself through the music as the band found their way back to their roots. And it’s finally here – Happiness Bastards is out now.

Essential Aerosmith: 3 Deep Cuts Every Fan Should Know
© 2024 American Songwriter
'That is how you turn 60': Maynard James Keenan, Primus and Puscifer go hard in Phoenix
Maynard James Keenan was nearing the end of a freewheeling stop on his 60th birthday tour, Sessanta , basking in the afterglow of “Southbound Pachyderm” as performed by a sprawling collective of extremely talented musicians from A Perfect Circle, Puscifer and Primus, when he told the crowd, “And that, mother (expletives), is how you turn 60.”
He was technically still 59 at that point. He turns 60 on Wednesday, April 17, when he returns to that same stage with those same friends at Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre in Phoenix, just down the hill from his home in Jerome, Arizona .
But it’s doubtful many people have embraced the thought of turning 60 with a more inspired blend of self-effacing humor, undeniable vitality and unabashed artistry than Keenan.
Maynard James Keenan's Sessanta was as untraditional as promised
The night was every bit as untraditional as promised, played out on a two-tiered stage with sofas and three drum kits on the upper level and a chairlift to transport musicians from one level to another, not because they’re too old to climb the stairs but because it added to the entertainment value of the night.
And that goes double for the people playing ping-pong during “Bullet Train to Iowa” and Keenan and Carina Round of Puscifer squeezing a game of Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots into Puscifer’s “The Remedy,” which features some of Keenan’s greatest lyrics (“Yes, we’re being condescending/ Yes, that means we’re talking down to you”).
The premise of this tour is that the members of A Perfect Circle, Puscifer and Primus will not only share a stage but share musicians as the night unfolds, resulting in some truly awe-inspiring feats of musical cross-pollination.
Having multiple drummers definitely added layers of intensity to the proceedings. You never knew when Les Claypool of Primus would show up in another goofy mask to join one of the other bands on bass. And Keenan gamely guested on lead vocals on Primus’ “Tommy the Cat.”
It felt like crashing a really cool party at a rock star’s house and watching the musicians let their hair down, except for one thing. You could tell they put some thought and effort into making sure it sounded right.
It was all about musicianship and friendship and the magic of collaboration.
How Keenan's Sessanta played out on the eve of his 60th birthday
The concert began with a video of Keenan in a Spam commercial driving home the zero-camera policy by warning fans that if you chose to disobey this policy, you would be asked to leave, at which point you would find yourself fed through an oversized meat grinder outside the concert, thereby becoming the secret ingredient that makes Spam such a culinary favorite of “cannibalistic cultures.”
As threats go, it was pretty entertaining.
Each band took a turn in the spotlight, starting with A Perfect Circle, who followed Keenan’s PSA with a haunting rendition of “The Package.”
At the song’s conclusion, Keenan took a moment welcome the crowd to his birthday show with “Let’s confirm what we already know… Arizona.”
The audience cheered, but not enough to satisfy him.
“Sounds like California,” he scoffed, an insult met with boos. “Let’s fix it. Arizona!"
Maynard James Keenan's Sessanta setlist: What A Perfect Circle, Puscifer and Primus played.
Maynard James Keenan weighs in on Arizona's return to 1864
That did the trick. Then, Keenan took a moment to address the local news.
“OK, so I’ve been out of town for about three weeks, out of state,” he said. “ Anything change that I should know about ? I dunno, like 1864 ? Jesus (expletive) Christ, people. Here’s my short speech, then I’ll (expletive) off. Register to (expletive) vote, please.”
Then it was back to the music with “Disillusioned.”
Each band did a three- to four-song set before rotating through the lineup two more times while changing up the order.
After bringing it all to a head with “Southbound Pachyderm” and telling the crowd this is how you turn 60, Keenan said, “I have been blessed with the privilege of working with some of the best musicians on the (expletive) planet… For my birthday, I got three new songs.”
And with that, the three bands dusted off the three songs featured on “Sessanta E.P.P.P”: A Perfect Circle’s “Kindred,” Puscifer’s “No Angel” and the Primus song “Pablo’s Hippies.”
Keenan closed his birthday celebration 'witnessing the majesty'
As the Primus song ended, Keenan joked, “Holy (expletive), you’re still here?”
Then, he brought the concert to a suitably majestic close with Puscifer’s “Grand Canyon,” singing “Witnessing the majesty.”
He’s referring, of course, to the majesty of the Grand Canyon. But it certainly applied to what we’d all just witnessed in the course of that performance.
Sessanta returns to Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre on Keenan’s birthday — Wednesday, April 17.

Hard Rock Band A-Z Announce Debut Self-Titled Album
- June 9th, 2022 –
Featuring Ray Alder & Mark Zonder of Fates Warning!
Watch The Video for the First Single “The Machine Gunner”
In early 2020, famed former drummer for Fates Warning and Warlord , Mark Zonder, began working on new material with the vision of beginning a new, full-time band that would offer something different from his current catalog. The mission was to deliver straightforward, no-frills hard rock that speaks to a broader audience. The end result, which sees Zonder reunite with Fates Warning lead vocalist Ray Alder, along with bassist Philip Bynoe ( Steve Vai , Warlord ), guitarist Joop Wolters, and keyboardist Vivien Lalu, is A-Z ! Today, the band is thrilled to announce their self-titled debut album will see an August 12, 2022 release via Metal Blade Records.
A-Z is pleased to share a new music video for the album’s first single, titled “The Machine Gunner”, at: youtu.be/it5fJwCB4-E
Speaking about the band’s debut album, Zonder (drums) comments: “ It has been a long time coming, but we are all very excited to share A-Z with the world and get the show on the road!! With an exceptional-sounding album and brilliant artwork from Hugh Syme, let the games begin! “
‘ A-Z ‘ tracklist: 01. Trial by Fire 02. The Far Side of the Horizon 03. The Machine Gunner 04. Rise Again 05. Window Panes 06. Run Away 07. Stranded 08. At the Waters Edge 09. Borrowed Time 10. Sometimes 11. The Silence Broken (Bonus Track)
About A-Z: When Mark Zonder, famed former Fates Warning and Warlord drummer, started working on material in early 2020 he had a very clear vision for the band he wanted to put together. “ I was thinking beer commercials, car commercials, and Cobra Kai. I wanted to have a very accessible band that would appeal to the masses and would lead to the ability to tour larger venues and build a second and third record off the success of the first. I did not want to hear things like, ‘I don’t hear a single, it is too proggy, I just don’t get it, let me listen to it a few more times’. I knew from myself and the others that I would recruit, it would have some sophisticated music parts but the big hook was the main priority. ” The result was A-Z , and while Zonder is adamant it is not a supergroup that is doing a ‘one and done’ record it has a stellar lineup, reuniting him with Fates Warning vocalist Ray Alder, Warlord / Steve Vai / Ring of Fire bassist Philip Bynoe, guitarist Joop Wolters and keyboardist Vivien Lalu, the combination of these players stirring up a very specific kind of magic that could not be replicated.
Things came together smoothly from the start, Zonder sending drum patterns and grooves to first recruit Lalu, and he would write songs using guitar sounds so between the two of them they had basic song structures pretty quickly. Zonder knew Bynoe would jump on board as they have a long history and mutual respect and Lalu had worked with Wolters for years, recruiting him for the band. Both Wolters and Lalu brought in great musical ideas that were turned into songs. The goal was always the same: shorter songs and getting right to the chorus, no twelve-minute songs, and everyone found it easy working to this remit. With everything else coming together nicely, finding the right singer was the hardest aspect of the whole process.
“ I had sent out a basic song to over 20 different singers, some popular named singers and some unknown, but completely struck out, ” says Zonder. “ Then I just decided to call Ray as I was not sure what he was up to. I figured it could not hurt to get in touch. I do remember speaking with him back in the day and him talking about how he loved this kind of music. I sent him a track or two and he just killed it. ” Adds Alder, “ I found this a chance to do something completely different than what I am used to, being in a prog metal band for 30 years. I find the blend of the 80s, 90s and a touch of 70s style of music very cool, and it is great to work with Mark after all of these years. ” Thrilled to have him on board, Zonder did not have a list of demands. “ My only words to him were ‘do whatever you want.’ I was not going to tell him what to do. Same for all of the others guys. Yes, there has to be some editing and making decisions, but when it came to the music I just wanted everyone to do what they do best. ” The results are undeniable, from the high octane stomper “The Machine Gunner”, to the gorgeous sway of “Rise Again” or the towering “Stranded”, every track an anthem that sounds like only the biggest venues could contain them.
