American Forces Travel Privileges Extended to Eligible Veterans

The Department of Defense announced today a policy change to the current shopping privileges on the American Forces Travel website. As directed by acting Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Virginia S. Penrod in a memo signed April 12, 2021, the department will extend online access to the website to honorably discharged veterans of the uniformed services.

On average, customers save 35-40% compared to commercial travel pricing by using AFT. This includes discounted rates on hotels (up to 60%), airfare, rental cars, vacation packages, event tickets, and cruises.

“Sixteen million veterans will now be able to access the American Forces Travel website, joining the 10 million active duty, Guard and reserve service members, family members, DOD civilians, and other patrons who are already receiving the benefit,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy Patricia “Patty” Montes Barron. “We are committed to providing quality-of-life programs to our military community, which includes our honorably discharged veterans.”

The change will not affect access for existing patrons, and the increased customer base will allow AFT to negotiate better prices for its customers.

AFT launched in 2019 as the only official joint service morale, welfare, and recreation leisure travel website exclusively for DOD patrons. In addition to improving access to DOD’s MWR benefits, every booking on American Forces Travel generates revenue to support critical quality-of-life programs for service members and families.

To access the exclusive military discount pricing on travel products, visit the American Forces Travel website . Proof of eligibility is required.

Discount Air Travel

Space-a travel, discounts on lodging and resorts, hotel discounts, base lodging, military resorts, military vacation clubs, other military travel discounts, rental cars, savings through travel websites, credit cards and rewards programs, finding the best military travel discounts takes time.

Several companies offer military discounts on air travel, lodging, resorts and more.

Even if you can’t score a military discount , you can still save money with travel promotions, credit card travel rewards , and more. Here’s what you need to know about military travel discounts.

Many U.S. airlines offer a military discount or incentive, such as checked bag fee waivers or seat upgrades.

However, these offers are not listed on travel websites. You must visit the airline’s website or call its customer service department to get a discount. Remember, airline discounts may only apply to active-duty, National Guard, or reserve service members and may only apply when traveling on orders.

Active duty military, veterans, and their families can also save on airline tickets through a partnership with WeSalute (founded as Veterans Advantage). Learn more about these programs below:

Space-available travel is excellent when it works: it’s a free seat on a military aircraft that’s headed to the same place you’re going (or close to it). However, Space-A seats are increasingly hard to come by.

You may have to wait a few days for a seat – if you get one at all. You should only travel Space-A if you’ve got a flexible schedule and a backup plan (which may include purchasing a last-minute airline ticket).

Veterans with a 100% service-connected disability rating, active-duty service members, National Guardsmen, reservists, retirees and dependents of these groups are eligible to travel Space-A.

Visit the AMC Travel Site or contact the nearest military passenger terminal to learn more about Space-A opportunities near you.

AMC’s Space-A Travel Handbook

Most hotel chains will offer military discounts , provided there isn’t a significant event on the calendar. For example, you may be hard-pressed to get a military discount at a hotel in New York City on New Year’s Eve.

Many hotel chains are also willing to cap their rates at the local per diem rate, which can amount to substantial savings, depending on the hotel chain and location. Rates capped at the per diem rate may require official orders, and almost always require active-duty, reserve or National Guard identification.

abc travel military discount

Veterans, Military and Government Personnel enjoy discounts at or below per diem at Best Western® Hotels & Resorts throughout North America.

abc travel military discount

Veterans, military, fire, emergency medical service personnel, doctors, nurses, 911 dispatchers, police and correctional officers save up to 25% at Great Wolf Lodge.

As part of the Military 1st program, Radisson Hotels offers a special military discount and an upgrade to the best available room at the time of check-in.

Base lodging rates may be significantly cheaper than local hotel rates. You can find base lodging at large military bases. Military hotel chains like the Navy Gateway Inn and Suites may own some of these. DOD contracts civilian hotel chains for some others, including IHG Army Hotels .

The Armed Forces Recreation Centers offer exceptional discounts in popular vacation locations. Some popular resorts include:

  • Hale Koa Resort (Hawaii)
  • Shades of Green Military Resort (Disney World),
  • Dragon Hill Lodge (Korea)

Many rental car services have negotiated rates with government agencies. You can rent a car at a great rate if you are traveling on official orders.

Some rental services offer similar deals for military members on leisure travel. They may also waive rental fees for drivers under age 25.

Hertz offers Government and Military discounted pricing of up to 10-25% off.

You can use discount travel service websites to compare airline, hotel and rental car prices. Some helpful websites include:

  • Travelocity

You can simplify your travel by booking your airline ticket, hotel room and rental car at the same time. However, bundling isn’t always the least expensive option. Compare prices across a few services if you have time.

Some of these companies offer discount plans or rewards for frequent customers. For example, Hotels.com offers a free one-night hotel stay for every 10 nights you reserve through them.

Using a travel rewards program can help you earn points and benefits like free checked bags, priority boarding, free flights, free hotel stays and other perks. You can earn even more points with a credit card rewards program.

Some of the more popular travel credit cards are a joint offering between a credit card company and a specific airline or hotel chain. These reward cards may come with a sign-up bonus equal to a free flight or several nights at a hotel. Other perks may include free checked bags for you and your party, priority boarding, flight discounts, merchandise and other benefits.

With any credit card, read the fine print before you sign up for any deals, and pay your card in full each month to avoid any fees or interest.

The Platinum Card® from American Express

abc travel military discount

American Express offers one of the best money-saving perks to military servicemembers – it waives the annual fees for its credit cards , including on The Platinum Card® and the American Express® Gold Card.

With an annual fee of $695 and $250 respectively, it’s easy to see how this under-the-radar perk can be a huge money saver for American Express cardholders, especially if you’re a service member who wants to enjoy the lucrative luxury perks that accompany The Platinum Card® from American Express , or the everyday practicality of the American Express® Gold Card .

Now that you know you can get your American Express annual fee waived as an active service member or spouse of a service member, what are some American Express cards to check out?

In my experience, booking the best travel deals requires a little legwork and a lot of patience. Always check with your unit before booking travel if you are traveling on military orders. They may have access to special offers or other requirements.

If you are traveling alone, start by determining if your itinerary allows for some military-specific travel options, such as Space-A, Armed Forces Recreation Centers or base lodging. If you cannot work one or more of those into your itinerary, you can still save money with some of the deals and services listed above.

Safe travels!

I would never recommended Hotels.com. I cancelled reservations with this broker back in Feb of 2021. And they still have not sent me my money back. I have spoken to two of their representatives and finally I just wrote them a letter. We will see how long it takes them to send me my money back. Be very careful with Hotels.com they have unresonable terms and conditions. If you do not read the small print they will refuse to reimburse you.

Respectfully,

Manuel Gonzalez.

Hello Manuel, Try contacting your credit card company and reversing the charges. That may work in your favor. As for Hotels.com, I’ve used them for years and I haven’t had any issues. So this may be a one-off situation. Best wishes with your situation.

July 6, 2021 at 11:48 am

Hello Wanda,

Thank you for your email. Unfortunately, I don’t have the information necessary to answer your question. I recommend looking at the available airlines at both the departure and destination airports to see which airlines might have the best options available for him. You may also try contacting a travel agent to see if they can assist you.

Best wishes!

I thought that Space-A was available to 100% DV’s and also base hotels. Is that true

December 11, 2020 at 2:34 pm

Hello David, yes, Space-A travel is available to 100% disabled veterans, within certain restrictions. However, it only covers the veteran and not his or her dependents. You would need to check with the closest Space-A terminal for information about current policies. Base lodging is also available to 100% disabled veterans, also on a space-available basis. YOu would need to work with the base lodging office to determine availability.

Those military discounts don’t apply to veterans who live in Puerto Rico. Then again they treat the common wealth like a redheaded stepchild.

Hi Ryan and everyone else,

I run a small company in Paris called Blue Fox Travel. We lead bike tours and skip-the-line tours inside Paris. We also visit the French countryside in 8 seater minibuses. I am in the process of putting together a Military and Veterans Discount on our website. (Three of my brothers are Vets.)

It will be available for all of our tours and Day Trips from Paris. I thought that it might be especially interesting to those of you who are interested in visiting any of the following places with us: The battle sights of Bealleau Wood (WWI) where the Marines got their Devil Dog nickname, The trenches in the Somme, and the D-Day Beaches of Normandy. We offer full day excursions visits to all of these places.

I am in the process of creating a 25% discount for all Active Duty and Military Veterans. Being an American myself this just seemed like something I should do for those who have served and are still serving in the US Military.

My company is called: Blue Fox Travel

For now, you are all welcome to send me an email directly and I will make the 25% discount happen for you. Within a month the discount should be online on our website.

Abc Travel is not what it’s supposed to…

Reply from ABC Travel Service

Dear Linda, the prices are actually provided to us by the airlines. We try to negotiate with the airlines to provide favorable rates for our customers. Nevertheless, you should find the normal rates with us that you can also book elsewhere. Something may have gone wrong with your search. However, the fact that air fares are currently very high is not the fault or poor performance of ABC Travel Service. It is a pity that you have to publish such a bad review immediately because of a slightly more expensive price. I hope you find more suitable results in your next search. Kind regards Christoph Steinel

Traveling in these times can be very…C.S

Traveling in these times can be very nerve-wrecking and lead to extreme stress. It can start with booking a ticket and coping with the constant airline and flight changes to asking silly questions like when do I receive a ticket??? But knowing that I can count on the excellent, friendly service of the agents reassures me that all will go well...And it always has!!! Big big thank you to Mr. Daniel Becker, Mr. Corey Meyer and the many others who have supported me on all of my travels. Thank you very much..Mahalo nui loa. C.S

Big thank you to Denise for her…

Big thank you to Denise for her outstanding help with our cruise. We would still be waiting to sail if she had not gone through the extra steps to help us get the pre-sailing requirements completed. We appreciate her translating the phone calls, documents and more.

The ABCTravel team does a great job…

The ABCTravel team does a great job finding me the best price for flights. I had to reschedule some flights recently and they made this process work very smoothly, especially given the short-notice. Julian Imhof from the Ramstein office helped me in re-booking and found me new flights also with a good deal on the price. Highly recommend!

True asset to the airline industry

The travel agent, Ms./Mrs. Haithover was very helpful in assisting me with my inquiries. She took the time to explain every question that I had in detail. Ms./Mrs. Haithover took the time to research multiple flight connections to fit my need. After my flight was altered by the airline, Ms./Mrs. Haithover rebooked my flights with better seating. A horrible experience so far

Whoever wrote this last review two days ago may have mixed things up. You CANNOT call ABC Travel - the hotline advises since months that they are NOT taking any phone calls. Response time on any email requests - if answered at all - take weeks if not months. If they come back they pretend to solve the issue by making offers in accordance with your request (e.g. change itinerary) but you wait another endless time (weeks/months) before you get any written confirmation that your flights had been rebooked. This travel agent doesn’t deserve the name “agent” and they are not interested in customer relations, just collecting money and then, customer please shut up. Will never ever use or recommend these fake agents.

Date of experience : June 12, 2022

HORRIBLE! We took trip to Jamica only to find ourselves stranded because our travel agent did not confirm our booking. When we attempted utilize the contact information provided in case of emergency, we were bounced back and forth from ABC Travel to FTI Touristik and POC in Jamica. No one wanted to help because they all felt it was not their problem. To top it all off it was over a weekend and no one answered the phone past Friday evening. The Jamaican resort was the most helpful, but we had to pay out of pocket cost on top the $6K we already paid for the vacation.

Disney has a well-established reputation for honoring those who serve our country and their loved ones. However, navigating the landscape of Disney’s military discounts can be challenging if you’re unsure where to start. Disney has special offers on park tickets, resort stays, and cruises. We’ll dig in to discover how Disney salutes our country’s dedicated service members — and, if you’re eligible, how to access these perks.

Military Discounts for Disney Theme Park Tickets

Walt Disney World’s Disney Military Salute Ticket and Disneyland’s Disney Military Promotional Park Hopper Ticket programs have been extended through 2024. These generously discounted programs have been renewed yearly since 2009, but every year, we wait on the edge of our seats to see if they will be renewed because they’re such a popular discount.

You need to meet specific criteria to be eligible. There are slight variations in each park’s requirements, so double-check the links we provide for specifics, but here’s the meat of it:

To qualify for the discounted ticket, you must meet at least 1 of these requirements:

  • Active or retired U.S. military personnel , including active or retired members of the U.S. National Guard, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Military Reserves, and U.S. Department of Defense
  • Honorably discharged veteran with 100% permanent and total (P&T) service-connected disability
  • Active or retired Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service (PHS) or Commissioned Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
  • A spouse of an eligible service member with an active and valid military ID
  • Military personnel of foreign nations and their family members, when assigned or attached to a U.S. military unit or installation
  • Widowed and non-remarried spouse of personnel who died while on active duty or while in retired status
  • Non-remarried former spouse who was married to military personnel while on active duty for at least 20 years

These tickets are fairly flexible, though there are some requirements of which you’ll need to be aware:

  • The eligible service member or their spouse must be present in the party on the day of activation
  • The same person must use each ticket for the duration of the ticket
  • Tickets are non-transferable
  • The discount cannot be combined with any other offer
  • There is a maximum of 6 passes per eligible service member or their spouse (but not both)
  • Tickets must be purchased at a U.S. military base ticket office

This last requirement means each family can purchase a maximum of 6 passes at Walt Disney World and a further 6 passes at Disneyland Resort. The exception is if both spouses are on active duty or retired military who fall into the categories above.

If you have a larger immediate family, such as a spouse and 5 children, Disney will generally make an exception to allow all of you access to a discounted ticket.

One of the most exciting aspects of the discounted tickets, discount aside, is that they do not need to be used consecutively and don’t expire 14 days after first use like standard tickets do.

If you decide to go for a day trip in April but have always wanted to see the magic of Disney during the holidays, that’s completely doable. It’s like a mini-annual pass.

With the Disney Military Salute Ticket (also known as the Armed Forces Salute Ticket), you can save up to 40% on your visit to Walt Disney World, with your most significant savings occurring during the busiest times of the year. The discount is significant thanks to the tiered pricing that standard tickets incur based on demand. Disney Military Salute Tickets don’t have this issue; the ticket price is the same no matter when you visit.

Here’s an example of the price difference you can experience between tickets:

As you can see, there’s a huge difference in how much you’ll need to pay with the military ticket versus a regular ticket.

Disney credit cardholders get special park perks , such as discounts on dining and merchandise.

Where Can You Visit With Disney Military Salute Tickets?

There are 2 types of Disney Military Salute Tickets available to service members. The least expensive tickets still include park hopping abilities , which means you can visit multiple Walt Disney World theme parks on the same day.

The Disney Military Salute Ticket With Park Hopper Plus , meanwhile, also provides admission each day to one of the following attractions (based on the length of your ticket):

  • Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon
  • Disney’s Blizzard Beach
  • ESPN World Wide Sports Complex
  • Mini golf courses

Disney Military Salute Ticket Blackout Dates

The blackout dates for Disney Military Salute Tickets change each year. Here are the blackout dates for 2024:

  • March 24, 2024, to April 6, 2024
  • November 24, 2024, to November 30, 2024

Walt Disney World’s military tickets for 2024 expire on December 20, 2024 .

Disneyland also offers military discount tickets at significantly discounted prices. Here’s what you can expect to pay.

Unlike Walt Disney World, these tickets don’t have any blackout dates. However, you must use up all your days by December 13, 2024 , or the remainder will be forfeited.

For those who are unfamiliar, Genie+ is the paid version of Disneyland’s old FASTPASS system, which allows you to make ride reservations and skip the general queues.

If you aren’t active duty military, retired, or a 100% P&T disabled veteran, you won’t qualify for the Walt Disney World’s Disney Military Salute Ticket or Disneyland’s Disney Military Promotional Park Hopper Ticket. In that case, you may be entitled to a standard military discount ticket .

Unfortunately, the discount is not as steep, and, depending on when you’re going, may just shave a few dollars off the ticket price . Still, it’s better than nothing if you’re considering the regular military discount because you have a party larger than 6 of non-immediate family or friends.

Like the specialty Disney military tickets, you must purchase this ticket type in advance from your MRW office, other eligible base ticketing offices, or Shades of Green, the military-owned Walt Disney World hotel.

Disney offers theme park discounts for Disneyland and Walt Disney World, though the ticket price will depend on your military status.

Military Discounts at Disney Hotels

The Walt Disney World Resort has more than 25 hotels available for guests. As you can imagine, it’s a sprawling complex.

Those with the same eligibility requirements for Disney Military Salute Tickets can also score deals on Walt Disney World Resort hotel stays.

To book rooms at discounted rates, call 407-939-7830. Note that the longest period you’ll be able to stay is 14 nights. There are also restrictions on which room types and resorts are eligible for this offer.

Shades of Green

Although it is owned by the Department of Defense (DoD), Shades of Green is considered a Walt Disney World Resort hotel due to its location within the grounds. Not everyone is eligible to stay here, though thanks to the Disabled Veterans Equal Access Act of 2018, many more veterans are now allowed access.

Shades of Green is considered a moderate Disney hotel, but it’s an upgraded version. The rooms are larger than those in other moderate hotels, and the amenities resemble those of a Deluxe Resort.

If you’re eligible to stay here, Shades of Green may be the best value for your money. The price for the standard room, which can sleep up to 5 people, starts at $174 per night for E1 to E6 active military personnel — the price increases for other tiers, including officers and veterans.

Shades of Green pricing

Redeeming Marriott Bonvoy points for the Walt Disney World Swan or Walt Disney World Dolphin can save you even more on your stay. Check out our guide on how to visit Disney World for cheap by using points and miles .

Even without a dedicated military hotel like Shades of Green, Disneyland does offer military discounts on hotel and resort stays. To book this offer, call 833-618-0536 .

From what we can tell, because the inventory is constantly fluctuating, so are the prices. If you have the freedom of price and time of year, it’s best to call and ask what will give you the best value and try to base your trip around that.

For example, we checked out a 2-night stay at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa in mid-August. Standard rooms, which are the least expensive, were going for $683 per night before taxes.

Disney Grand Californian pricing

However, when we called to ask for the military discount, we were quoted $614 per night . That’s a decent chunk of change, especially during the summer season.

Use your Disney ® Premier Visa ® Card or your Disney ® Visa ® Card to pay for your stay and get promotional 0% financing for 6 months !

We’d be remiss not to include discounts available for Disney Cruise Line ! Eligibility requirements are similar to those who qualify for the Disney Military Salute Ticket or Disneyland’s Disney Military Promotional Park Hopper Ticket, including active duty, retirees, and those who are 100% P&T disabled.

Only 50 rooms per cruise are available with the military discount, so they sell out quickly. Be sure to check frequently to see which cruises are being offered with a discount , and call 800-951-3532 to make reservations as soon as they are available .

Beyond this, you’re only entitled to 1 discounted room per sailing, so if you travel in a large group, you’ll want to consider the cost of a second room.

Although Disney Cruise Line sailings tend to be more expensive than other cruise lines, they’re also high-quality and a lot of fun. The military discount you can receive can also significantly drop the cost.

For example, you can book a 12-night cruise in a Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah for $9,744 with a military discount. That’s a lot, but who wouldn’t love to visit Norway and Iceland?

Disney Cruise Line military discount cruise

That same cruise for regular guests, however, is $14,242 .

Disney Cruise Line full price

That’s a savings of $4,498 or nearly 32%!

Disney is a world of its own. So many of us go there to escape the stressors of everyday life and immerse ourselves in the dreamlike wonder of being a kid again. What better gift to our military personnel than to make that magic accessible to those who need it most and their respective families?

From park tickets to hotel discounts and even special rates on cruises, Disney does service members proud by offering significant savings to those who are eligible.
