My wife and I recently used Golf 2 Africa for a wonderful golf holiday in South Africa. They did an excellent job, sorting out pick ups at the airport, transfers to a first class guest house in Pretoria, then as a result of their recommendation we stayed at Wildside Camp, Entebeni for 4 days. Our tour guide was excellent, we saw lots of the animals, including lions, cheetah, rhino, elephants and lots of antelope. We were then transferred to Rovos Rail for 9 wonderful days of golf. Every part of the holiday arranged by Golf 2 Africa was first class.

Having just returned from a 3 week golfing holiday arranged by Golf 2 Africa, and as our group leader I would like to say just how much we enjoyed the whole trip. This is the second holiday we have booked through Golf 2 Africa and I must say the organization was second to none. The hotels and golf courses selected for us were top notch as was our guide Pete who took care of every detail. I can thoroughly recommend any holiday arranged by Quintin and his staff. We will be visiting South Africa again and will definitely let them handle all the arrangements. SUPERB!!

African Golf Safaris

African golf safaris: a hole-in-one for golf enthusiasts.

When most travellers think of Africa, they picture stunning vistas of golden grassland silhouetted by singular camel thorn trees, the great African sun sinking each night into rich sunsets that unfold into a carpet of endless stars.

Against this exquisite backdrop roam the famous Big 5, affording travellers the opportunity to witness Africa’s majestic wildlife and to experience the myriad cultures that make the African continent one of the most unforgettable destinations in the world.

Picture this unique travel experience from the tranquillity of the golf course, and you have the story of a sporting adventure that will keep your golfing buddies mesmerized for years to come.

African golf safaris include some of the most brag-worthy experiences out there, and come packaged with the best golf resorts that Africa has to offer, allowing you to pair popular tourist destinations with top-tier golfing.

These golf safaris create the perfect blend of traditional game-viewing with the opportunity to tee-off on exquisite courses, and the best tour packages ensure that you’ll want for nothing, so that all you need to focus on is sinking that hole-in-one.

In this article we explore some of the best golfing destinations which the African continent has to offer, so that you can make your next tee-off one you will never forget.

Mozambique is often considered the gateway into the rest of Africa, and the city of Beira is a popular tourist destination, being a picturesque seaside metropolis rich with historical architecture that much resembles ancient Mediterranean port cities.

Due to its tropical savannah climate, Beira is best visited outside of the rainy season, with the month of July bringing temperate days that are perfect for a round on the exquisite Beira Golf Club.

A hidden gem amongst many traveling golf connoisseurs, the Beira Golf Club boasts excellent facilities and welcoming staff, making it a perfect option for beginner and advanced golfers alike.

The city of Beira features a range of accommodation options close to the Golf Club, with budget-friendly and top tier selections available, allowing you to combine your golf trip with tours of this unique and historical city.

Included in some of Beira’s must-see sites are the Ruins of Fort San Gaetano, one of the oldest European-made structures in Southern Africa, and Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral, a colonial monument erected with rocks imported from Portugal.

Added to this, Macuti Beach is popular with travellers for its historical lighthouse and its fascinating shipwreck that ran aground in 1985.

Maputo is considered one of Africa’s most attractive capitals, and being Mozambique’s most developed city, offers a wide range of hotels and restaurants, convenient supermarkets, and breezy sidewalk cafes.

Travellers visit Maputo to immerse themselves in the lively cultural scene, with guided day tours that explore the city’s many fascinating historical landmarks and exquisite colonial Portuguese architecture.

These expertly guided tours take travellers to the Chissano Gallery, the National Art Museum, the city’s Cultural Centre, and the landmark city Train Station with its singular Portuguese architecture.

These tours are best rounded off with dinner at one of the city’s exciting restaurants to sample the local cuisine.

This rich cultural experience creates the perfect backdrop to the nine holes at the Maputo Golf Club, which can also be experienced with partner offers that provide for an unforgettable golf tour package.

Victoria Falls

Situated on a picturesque hill overlooking the Zambezi River, the Elephant Hills Resort boasts an 18-hole championship golf course four kilometres uphill from the majestic Victoria Falls.

As the only golf course located at the Victoria Falls, this is a truly unique golfing experience unlike any other in the world.

This unforgettable golf trip can be complemented by a number of enthralling activities, including flights over the falls, river rafting, micro-lighting, and game drives that include full day excursions to Hwange and night drives.

The Victoria Falls are an unforgettable African icon, constituting one of the most spectacular natural wonders of the world. In fact, Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

Statistically speaking, it is the largest waterfall in the world, being a remarkable 1 708 meters wide, and both the falls and the surrounding area have been declared National Parks and a World Heritage Site, thus preserving the area from excessive commercialization.

As such, a golfing trip to the Victoria Falls presents a truly unforgettable experience.

One of the most popular golf courses in Zimbabwe, Ruwa Country Golf Club recently launched a stunning 18-hole green, making it one of the best golfing options in the region.

The 75 year old Ruwa Golf Club perfectly blends old-world charm with all the modern amenities, making for an up-market and welcoming experience.

The city of Ruwa is located in Mashonoland East, the native locale of the Shona people which is rich with cultural history and enthralling wildlife destinations.

Situated just 22 kilometres south of the capital city of Harare, Ruwa is easily accessible after landing at Harare International Airport. The city has grown rapidly in recent years as a popular tourist destination, and today boasts a wealth of hotels, resorts and restaurants.

Day tours through Ruwa will take you to some truly remarkable sites, including the Wild is Life Trust, Chapungu Sculpture Park, the Balancing Rocks, and the Shona Sculpture Gallery.

While Ruwa is considered the most popular golf course in Zimbabawe, Chapman Golf Club is by far the best, whose bent grass greens conform to the highest international standards.

The 18 hole, 6582 metre course is intricately incorporated into a parkland setting with its undulating manicured terrain, entwined by the clever use of a major tributary of the Mukuvisi River.

Peter Matkovich designed the water features to form an integral part of the course where even professional golfers will find them a challenge, making for an invigorating golfing experience in a serene parkland setting.

Chapman Golf Club is located in Zimbabwe’s bustling capital city of Harare, which has become increasingly popular with travellers in recent times for its abundance of historical landmarks and its vibrant local culture.

This city abounds with a variety of accommodation options, from upmarket hotels to budget-friendly lodges, which are located at a convenient distance from the Chapman Golf Club.

A variety of tour packages can be arranged in the city, which consist of day trips as well as multi-day packages.

Some of the exciting day excursions available include a trip to the Great Zimbabwe Ruins to explore the fascinating hill complex built by the Shona people, an iconic landmark after which the region was named “Dzimbadzemabwe”, or house of stones.

Harare also boasts a wealth of cultural tours, natural wildlife areas, and the particularly enthralling Mbare cultural tour into the pioneer township which is considered the cultural heartbeat of the city.

Located in Zimbabwe’s second largest city, the greens at the Bulawayo Country Club perfectly round off a golfing tour of this remarkable African destination.

Bulawayo is the urban heartbeat of the province of Matabeleland which comprises the whole of western Zimbabwe from the South African border in the south to Victoria Falls in the north.

The city is well-loved for its wide, manicured roads and Victorian architecture, and is home to several prominent museums, including the natural history museum, the railway museum, and the Bulawayo art gallery.

A thriving cultural centre, many of Bulawayo’s fascinating museums are located in charming turn-of-the-century buildings, and also abounds with theatres and vibrant craft centres.

This city boasts a fine selection of upmarket hotels, as well as budget-friendly options, from which the Country Club’s manicured 18-hole green can be easily accessed.

Less than an hour’s drive from the city is one of Zimbabwe’s primary tourist attractions, namely the Matopas National Park, which is accessed along a fascinating route of granite rock.

This changing natural granite theatre creates a variegated moonscape that has become popular with landscape photographers.

The Kame ruins are located just twenty-two kilometres to the west of Bulawayo, and are one of Southern Africa’s most notable Late Iron Age Ruins, made famous as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The ruins are flanked by the Mazwi Nature Reserve, which is a popular destination for serene days spent walking, picnicking and driving through this untouched terrain.

Another of Bulawayo’s must-see destinations is the Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage and Research Centre, a home for orphaned, sick or abandoned wild animals, where visitors can witness the rehabilitation of lion, leopard, cheetah, and black rhino, to name a few. Last but not least, Mzilikazi Arts and Crafts Centre, situated just out of town off the Old Falls road is a wonderful destination for craft enthusiasts, who can browse the exquisite collection of locally crafted sculptures, basketry, pottery, beadwork and woodwork.

Golf enthusiasts traveling to Botswana often visit the Cresta Mowana Golf Course, whose luxurious on-site lodge offers spectacular accommodation on the banks of the Chobe River.

A round of golf on this revitalizing 9-hole green can be complemented by a range of activities, including game drives, boat cruises, fishing and bird watching.

Kasane is a town in the north-eastern corner of Botswana, near the borders of Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe, and functions as the gateway to the Chobe National Park, known for the herds of elephants which converge on the Chobe River in the dry season.

As such, this spectacular setting provides some of the most remarkable game viewing in Africa, while the town of Kasane is an important point of debarkation for the nearby Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Livingstone in Zambia, and Namibia’s Caprivi Strip.

Sprawling along the banks of the Chobe River, Kasane offers an array of hotels, guest houses and campsites that accommodate all the visitors to the national park.

Many of these, as with Cresta Mowana, are located in spectacular settings overlooking the sparkling Chobe River which attracts a diverse number of wildlife.

Many visitors to Kasane enjoy a morning game drive rounded off with an afternoon boat cruise, which can be followed by an invigorating round of golf the next day.

The majestic Victoria Falls can also be accessed 80 kilometres from Kasane, while the town itself has a rich selection of arts and crafts centres

Must-see sites in Kasane include the caracal biodiversity centre, the Seboba Nature and Recreation Park, and pangolin photo safaris, where visitors can view at close range these remarkable and highly endangered species.

Avid golf enthusiasts will no doubt be impressed by Botswana’s championship Phakalane Golf Estate Hotel Resort, a 4 star resort located in the heart of Botswana’s premier Golf Estate.

The estate’s serene setting encompasses a spacious hotel as well as upmarket self-service apartments, each boasting breath-taking panoramic views of the manicured 18-hole golf course.

Visitors who choose alternative accommodation in Gaborone can access the course with a weekend pass or on a day visit, while also taking the opportunity to explore the many sites of Botswana’s capital city.

Of particular interest to many visitors is the film set of the beloved movie, The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency, located in a cul-de-sac at the base of Kgale Hill.

This fascinating film set consists of a perfect replica of a segment of Gaborone, including a butchery, hair salon, general supplies shop and outdoor eatery.

Built to resemble the Gaborone of yesteryear, the film set is a wonderful bit of time travel to a bygone era, and has been rated one of the top 12 excursions in Africa.

The Gaborone Game Reserve is a unique take on the more well-known wilderness reserves, and is a 5 kilometre stretch of wild land located in the city, replete with savannah, riparian woodland, marsh and rocky outcrops.

The reserve hosts a great variety of wildlife, including warthog, dassies, vervet monkeys, kudu, impala, zebra and blue wildebeest.

Elsewhere in the city, cultural enthusiasts will find regular traditional dance shows, as well as rock, jazz and classical music concerts at Maitisong Cultural Centre and Botswana Craft, many of which are hosted by the Alliance Francaise.

Lastly, the nearby Mokolodi Nature Reserve is a registered non-profit organisation which is located on 3 700 hectares of donated bush veld, and is home to a range of wildlife indigenous to South Eastern Botswana, some of which are highly endangered today.

For many golf enthusiasts, the Lusaka Golf Club located in Zambia’s capital is a historical bucket-list item, having hosted a remarkable twenty-five Zambia Opens since 1973.

Some of golf’s most notable victors have won the Zambia Open at the Lusaka Golf Club, including Peter Cowan, Peter Townsend, Ewan Murray and Brian Barnes.

Considered to be Zambia’s premier golfing destination, The Lusaka Golf Club was officially opened in 1935, and underwent some alterations in the Second World War with the addition of new holes.

In 1958 the course was again renovated to include 18 holes, and today this beautiful tree-lined green covers 6 575 metres from the championship trees, playing to a par of 73.

Visitors who come to experience Zambia’s premier golf club can complement this unique excursion with a number of exciting activities in and around the city of Lusaka.

Lusaka is a bustling metropolis which is very tourist-friendly and welcoming, with a good range of accommodation options to suit every type of traveller.

Relics of the country’s colonial past can be found throughout the city, which include Cairo Road, named after its connection to the Great North Road and Rhodes’ planned Cape to Cairo connection.

The Sunday Craft Market, located in the Arcades Mall Car Park, is a fantastic place to find handcrafted African art, curios and souvenirs, while the Kabwata Cultural Village is the perfect blend of the marketplace and cultural village experience.

First established in 1974, Kabwata Cultural Village affords visitors the chance to meet village residents, watch dancing displays on some weekends, and see what village life was like under colonial rule.

A community of wood carvers and artists live in the village and offer their crafts for sale, allowing you to directly support the community and craftsmen.

The relatively new Lusaka National Park is located just outside Lusaka and is an excellent opportunity for visitors to spot resident White Rhino, presenting an extremely rare opportunity to witness these magnificent and highly endangered species at close range.

Cultural enthusiasts will enjoy a trip to Namwandwe Art & Sculpture Gallery, which is considered one of Zambia’s finest art galleries.

The Gallery is privately owned by local businessman and patron of the arts John Kapotwe, and features the best selection of contemporary Zambian art.

Lastly, the Henry Tayali Gallery, named after the world-renowned Zambian artist, also features visual arts and hosts seminars and workshops arranged for local members and educational institutions.

The Gallery’s various exhibitions highlight prominent and upcoming contemporary Zambian artists.

The Ndola Golf club is located in the sprawling city of Ndola, which is located in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia, and is the third largest city in the country.

This prosperous mining city is situated just 10 kilometres from the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and is an excellent stop en route to the Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage.

The sophisticated, well-tended city shows no evidence of its industrial roots, while the course at the Ndola Golf Club is an interesting addition to any golfer’s bucket-list.

The par 72 is fairly short and provides a different sort of challenge for players as there are no water hazards and only the odd bunker surrounding each green.

However, the danger does come in by means of the 300-plus anthills which at times are taller than 3 metres and come into play for most wayward shots from the tee.

This historical golf club was first established in 1921, and as such is one of the oldest clubs in the country after the Livingstone Golf Club, established in 1907, and Kasama in 1912.

The club has always been the social heartbeat of the city which has hosted a number of prominent figures throughout the years.  In the past few years it has hosted the Zambian Open three times, in 2007, 2009 and 2010.

In 1981 the club celebrated its diamond Jubilee and held the Cock ‘O the North professional tournament, which was attended by some famous international professionals, such as Sandy Lyle, Brian Barnes, Jose Maria Cannizares, Brian Waites, and Eamon D’arcy.

Livingstone

The Livingstone Golf Club is the oldest in Zambia, having first been established in 1908 as a 9-hole course to provide social entertainment to the settlers that arrived in Livingstone.

In 1910, His Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught and his wife the Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia visited the Club, and in 1925, Prince Edward, then Prince of Wales, was hosted by the Club.

Recently, golfing design legend Peter Matkovich redesigned the course to include 18 holes, set in a magical botanical garden that includes over 118 tree species which line the fairways and greens.

The park layout offers golfers a classic parkland challenge in a unique African setting, providing golfers an unforgettable experience that honours the history and tradition of the game of golf.

The Club is open to members and guests, and is favoured by traditionalists who prefer a return to playing golf on foot, while enjoying the lush, serene surroundings.

The town of Livingstone is a fascinating Zambian destination, and is a charming historical colonial destination located near the mighty Zambezi River and the breath-taking Victoria Falls.

Considered to be Zambia’s adventure gateway, the town offers a host of adrenaline pumping activities, as well as interesting cultural sites, such as Chief Mukuni’s village, which provides a wonderful introduction to the daily customs of the local tribe.

As Zambia’s most popular tourist destination, Livingstone provides a great selection of accommodation options located near to the Livingstone Golf Club, from upmarket hotels and lodges to more budget-friendly and self-catering options.

The prestigious Kasama Golf Club is the second oldest in Zambia, having first been established in 1912, and offers a high-end golfing experience set in the ease and tranquillity of the African surrounds.

The thriving city of Kasama acts as the capital of the Northern Province of Zambia, with a number of interesting local attractions and cultural activities.

These include a local market where tourists can browse a fantastic selection of handmade arts and crafts, as well as hiking and biking trails and guided tours of the local Bemba culture.

Included in the area’s must-see attractions is a trip to the Chisamba Falls, the largest waterfall in Zambia after the iconic Victoria Falls,  where you can also cross the Zaire pedicle and visit the nearby lake.

The local Mwela Rock Paintings are a fascinating series of caves once inhabited by Bushmen, whose amazingly well-preserved rock paintings can best be viewed on a guided tour from a National Parks authority.

As the commercial hub of the province, Kasama has a range of excellent accommodation options, from luxury hotels to self-catering chalets, which are located at a convenient distance from the Golf Club.

Furthermore, Kasama is well-known for its selection of local restaurants that allow tourists to experience the exciting flavours of local Zambian cuisine.

Travellers to Kenya typically start off their journey into this fascinating African country at the capital city of Nairobi, where golf enthusiasts can begin their tour of the country’s well-established golf courses at the Royal Nairobi Golf Club.

For the traveling Golfer, teeing off in one of Kenya’s many world class golf courses makes for a perfect break from a safari. Kenya’s weather is ideal for golf all year round making it one of the world’s top golfing destinations.

Established in 1906, the Royal Nairobi Golf Club is the oldest golfing society in Kenya, and the original 9-hole sand greens were later redesigned into a fully grassed 18-hole course in the 1920s.

The course is just over 7000 yards from the back markers, and a substantial new water hazard was recently established on the par four 10th hole, adding an interesting new challenge for golfing enthusiasts.

The finishing eighteenth hole is the only watering hole on the course. Flowering bushes and a large assortment of tree species lend splendid colour to the course.

The Golf Club’s first East African Ladies’ championship was held in 1932 under the patronage of The Kenya Golf Union (K.G.U). The tees, which consist of various types of players, including Championship, Medal and Ladies’, are the largest in Kenya.

From the two opening holes, players have a picturesque view of the iconic Ngong Hills, which make an impressive backdrop as you commence your round.

The Royal Nairobi Golf Club is located in close proximity to the vibrant city of Nairobi, and is situated on Ngong Road, one of Nairobi’s longest roads.

Nairobi itself is a captivating city, full of interesting contrasts that make it East Africa’s most cosmopolitan metropolis. The city boasts a vibrant local culture, tantalizing eateries and a sparkling nightlife.

Nairobi has retained its historical sensibility, with an excellent museum as well as the historical home of Karen Blixen, author of the renowned memoir ‘Out of Africa’, open to visitors.

Interestingly, while modern Nairobi has grown exponentially in recent years, it retains its moniker as the safari capital of Africa, which is inextricably linked to the singular Kenyan wilderness that still surrounds it, and can best be explored at the Nairobi National Park.

The Nairobi National Park is resplendent with dramatic plains, cliffs and forests, where tourists can witness at close range large herds of zebra, Wildebeest, Buffalo, Giraffe, as well as Rhino, Cheetah, and a large number of Lions, all within twenty minutes of the city centre.

For those interested in experiencing the city’s urban culture, the Nairobi Fashion Market is an outdoor shopping event that brings together over 100 fashion designers, retailers and buyers.

The Maasai Market gives you the opportunity to buy authentic African art, hand- crafted beaded jewellery and clothing as souvenirs, gifts, and even decorating material for your own future projects.

The Blankets and Wine Event, held every first Sunday of the month, brings together Afro-based fusion musicians from different countries for an amazing musical experience complemented by excellent food and drinks.

Golf enthusiasts traveling to Mombasa should be sure to play a round at the Mombasa Golf Club, an exquisite 9-hole links golf course sprawling along Kilindini Harbour with spectacular views of the Indian Ocean.

The Club was first established in 1911, and today hosts the Barry Cup, the premier sporting event for amateurs in the region which draws massive support from the growing golf fraternity

This event has also emerged as a gem of socialization and the festive camaraderie that pervades the ocean facing club is usually the premium outing for regional and upcountry tourists.

The historical city of Mombasa is a popular tourist destination in Kenya, which is a commercial and cosmopolitan port town.

Mombasa’s unique locale as an island town connected to the mainland by ferries and bridges gives it a relaxed and jovial feeling, while the exotic old town is a true reflection of the heart of Mombasa.

Here the air is rich with the scent of spices, winding along the narrow streets dotted with spectacular Arab architecture.

Fort Jesus, located on the harbour’s edge, is an impressive stone fort with high gun turrets, battlements and underground passages that date from the 16th century.

This fascinating landmark was the historic battleground for control between the Portuguese army and the Shirazi Arabs, a significant and long-lasting event in Kenyan history.

Modern Mombasa is a singularly diverse and welcoming melting pot of culture, valuing both history and progress to bring an abundance of interesting attractions which can be visited on day tours.

Mombasa has a unique Go-Kart with an African charm to it. Located along Malindi road, just a few miles away from Haller Park, this go-kart track has a state of the art timing system, which winds under palm trees with camels, donkeys and turtles off the track.

There is also an off-road option available for where you can explore the beach on hired buggies, while the excavator park inside the vicinity is an excellent site for children to explore.

Mombasa has several beautiful beaches that are a popular destination for sun-bathing, swimming, walking and relaxing. Diani, Nyali and Bamburi beaches are three top choices with fine hotels and eateries along the shore.

One of Mombasa’s most delightful attractions are the numerous marine activities that are held on the beach every day.

For those who prefer a more adventurous maritime experience from the ordinary kayaking and swimming, there is the opportunity to go scuba diving and snorkelling at the Mombasa Marine National Park.

This underwater paradise is resplendent with mangroves, sea grass beds and a gorgeous protected coral reef. On these excursion travellers are likely to see stingrays, seahorses and eels in their natural habitat.

Haller Park, formerly known as Bamburi Nature Trail, is extremely popular with bird enthusiasts and animal lovers, and boasts more than 160 bird species.

The Park was established in 1971 by Dr René Haller, who transformed the abandoned limestone quarries into a thriving nature reserve.

Lastly, visitors to Mombasa should take the opportunity to visit East Africa’s largest crocodile farm at Mamba the Village Center.

The Center provides insightful tours of various indigenous reptiles, as well as horseback trails through the beautiful botanical garden and its aquarium, where exhibits of flowering orchids, aquatic plants and carnivorous species are available.

The city is full of rich and diverse history, so that you can blend your golfing adventure with guided tours to the various historical landmarks, including colourful trips to Soweto, Constitution Hill, Gold Reef City, and other iconic destinations.

The fun and dynamic coastal city of Durban is located in the lush, tropical province of Kwa-Zulu Natal, and is known for its exciting blend of Indian and Zulu culture.

Sprawling along South Africa’s balmy east coast, the warm Durban air lends itself perfectly to the many beach resorts which have made the city famous as South Africa’s playground.

The majestic Zulu Kingdom is home to a number of blue flag beaches, and exciting cultural tours can be arranged to some of South Africa’s most historical battlefields of Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana.

Added to this, there are gorgeous mountain resorts nestled in the regal Drakensberg range, and unforgettable tours of the Sani Pass which takes you across breath-taking vistas near to the border of the mountainous country of Lesotho.

As with Johannesburg, a variety of accommodation can be found near the city’s golf courses, ranging from budget-friendly options to high-end luxury stays.

Included in Durban’s fine selection of top-ranking golf estates are the Durban Country Club, the Cotswold Downs Golf Club, Zimbali Golf Course and the Wild Coast Sun Golf Club.

The Garden Route

The Garden Route is one of South Africa’s most beloved regions, stretching for 200 kilometres through picturesque small towns and on to some of the most popular coastal cities, including Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, Wilderness and Mossel Bay.

The Garden Route is replete with exciting and beautiful travel destinations, such as the otherworldly Tsitsikamma Forest and the iconic Storms River Bridge.

As such, the Garden Route has become immensely popular for its variety of experiences that cater to almost every type of traveller, meandering through spectacular mountain ranges, lush forests, and relaxing coastal bays.

Across this collection of dramatic natural havens, tourists enjoy a range of activities including whale watching, scuba diving, fishing, and wine tastings.

The accommodation options are equally as varied, consisting of self-catering chalets, safari camps, and top-tier lodges nestled in the region’s selection of golf estates.

Some of the must-see top-ranking golf estates which the Garden Route has to offer are the The Links at Fancourt, Pinnacle Point Golf Club, Simola Golf Club and Fancourt Outeniqua.

Cape Winelands

A trip to South Africa would not be complete without visiting the Cape Winelands, which offer an exciting contrast to the bush veld regions of the country with its gorgeous vineyards that flow into the foothills of the majestic Cape Fold Mountains.

The Cape region is famous for its exquisite heritage wines, which gain their distinctive taste from the rich Cape terroir and the clear, salty air.

Many of the region’s best golf courses are located in the gorgeous wine region, allowing travellers to intersperse their golfing days with wine tastings at these prestigious wine farms, many of which date back to the 1600s.

Some of the must-see golfing estates of the Cape region include Arabella Golf Course, Pearl Valley Golf Estate, Erinvale Golf Club, and the De Zalze Golf Club, with a variety of accommodation options to choose from.

Groot Constantia Wine Estate

Founded in 1685, the historic Groot Constantia wine farm is a picturesque estate that became known in the 18 th century for its sweet wines and superior quality, bringing itself attention from royals. Authors including Jane Austen and Charles Dickens referenced the winery in their works, and Napoleon Bonaparte had monthly supplies shipped to him. When you visit, you will happy the opportunity to have wine tastings, wine and chocolate pairings and tours of the cellar. There are also two restaurants onsite, as well as a museum detailing the Estate’s rich history.

Once known as the Malay Quarter, the neighbourhood of Bo-Kaap is internationally recognised for its colourful facades that make a great photo opportunity. Once named after its slave population rooted in Malaysian, African, Indian, and Sri Lankan culture and brought over by Dutch imperialists, the neighbourhood has developed into a blend of styles and identities. The neighbourhood is best explored by foot, where you can tour its mosques—including South Africa’s oldest—and visit landmarks, historic restaurants, and shops. At the Bo Kaap Food and Craft Market, held on the first Saturday of each month, enjoy homemade goods from samosas and koesisters to jewellery and handcrafted goods.

Table Mountain

You can make your way to the top of Table Mountain via cable car. The views over Cape Town and the Atlantic Ocean are simply spectacular, whilst there is also a short circular walking route you can follow while you’re up there.

George & Fancourt

Scenic Flights

Fancourt Resort and the town of George reside in the middle of South Africa’s Garden Route, an aptly named stretch of land on the country’s southern coast. One of the best ways to see more of the stretch of land is from the air, where you can witness some of the most awe-inspiring natural beauty in the world. White-sandy beaches contrast with crushed cliffs and rolling mountains to create a dreamlike world that is prominently unique. We highly recommend this experience which operates out of George Airport. If you are interested in adding this to your South African Golf Holiday, please mention it in the enquiry form.

Victoria Bay

Fancourt and the coastal town of George lie in a secluded spot along South Africa’s Garden Route. Victoria Bay is the isolated coastal area near where George lies, and it is one of the smallest bays along The Garden Route. A beautiful beach that is like a cove enclosed by cliffs, it is also a potential surf spot for the avid surfers, with long waves giving long rides. It is a safe beach with its own tidal pool and jetty, with nearby walking spots connecting the area with the local flora and fauna. It is easily reachable with a rental car from Fancourt Golf Resort.

Robertson Brewing Co.

Are you a lover of beer or breweries? If so, Robertson Brewing Co is sure to excite. It brews premium craft beer in the heart of George, a small township along The Garden Route. A recent addition to the George area, the brewery opened in 2013 and now offer tastings of their wide variety of beers that are unique to South Africa. They also have a great variety of food making the destination a fantastic choice for lunch or dinner.

The best golf resorts in the Middle East and Africa (2024-25)

Arabella Hotel, Golf & Spa Phalaborwa, South Africa

On the southern tip of South Africa, just down the coast from Cape Town, sits Arabella Hotel, Golf & Spa, a truly luxurious getaway for couples, families, weddings or even your next work conference. Golfers will love Arabella Golf Course, which might briefly trick you into thinking you’re playing something like Pebble Beach with its white-sand bunkers and water-lined holes that play alongside Bot River Lagoon. The resort is massive enough to host several weddings, conferences or other functions at once, but it’s also well known for all the offerings you’ll find at the spa, which is overflowing with top-of-the-line relaxing packages for women, men and couples. Oh, and if you want something faster paced for a day trip, Cape Town is just an hour and a half away. [ LEARN MORE HERE ]

Fancourt George, South Africa

Fancourt’s a family-friendly resort, but the golf is so good here we feel compelled to talk about that first. The three 18-holes courses were all designed by South African Gary Player, and while the Outeniqua and Montagu courses are no slouches, The Links is Fancourt’s crown jewel. The course, which opened in 2000, was designed by Player to bring a piece of Irish or Scottish links golf to the southern tip of South Africa, and he didn’t disappoint. Often considered one of the best golf courses in the country, it also famously hosted the 2003 Presidents Cup, where the teams led by Jack Nicklaus and Player battled to a tie. But at Fancourt, the accommodations are far from an afterthought. It boasts two sizable pools, three exquisite restaurants, more than 100 luxurious rooms, a spa and a ton of family-friend activities like an in-house cinema, biking trails, fishing and more. Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita Beau Champ, Mauritius

If you want to get away. Like, really get away. The Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita is your spot. Turquoise water. A private beach. Breathtaking views. What more could you want? The accommodations are just as good as the setting, too. You won’t find hundreds of standard hotel rooms here, just 14 luxurious spots for you to call home on one epic vacation. There’s five villas, two royal island sanctuaries and seven private retreats — with all of them boasting their own private garden and pool. Besides simply hanging out in paradise, there’s also a spa, two golf courses — Anahita Golf Club and Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club — designed by two golf legends and loads of land and sea experiences to indulge in. That is when you aren’t indulging in the mouthwatering culinary offerings. [ LEARN MORE HERE ]

Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Wellness Resort Bel Ombre, Mauritius

You can live the suite life at Heritage Le Telfair, where all the accommodation on offer is a suite, and the only thing you have to decide is what kind of view you’d like to enjoy: garden, beachfront or seaview. Two stunning golf courses await: the first, the established Le Chateau, featuring gentle foothills, generous fairways, and stunning views of the Indian Ocean, and the second, La Reserve, which was co-designed by Louis Oosthuizen and will celebrate its grand opening in December. Both courses have the distinction of hosting the DP World Tour’s Mauritius Open, with La Reserve making its host debut this year. Post-round, hungry resort guests can choose from an array of delectable choices, from the beachfront Le Palmier to the elegant Annabella’s. Non-golf activities abound on both land and sea, from boat excursions and snorkeling to exploring the awe-inspiring Bel Ombre Nature Reserve by vehicle or foot. Need to work out some aches and pains? The resort’s Seven Colours Spa is 2,000 square meters or pure tranquility, with a full menu of professional treatments as well as a hydrotherapy pool, bubble bath, and outdoor showers. Hilton Tangier Al Houara Resort & Spa Tangier, Morocco

If all you know of Morocco is what you’ve seen in recent flicks — Ethan Hunt’s vehicular assault on the markets of Marrakesh in Mission: Impossible 5 or Indy Jones’s careening tuk-tuk chase through the streets of Tangier in Dial of Destiny — you’ve been missing out on dreamy North African bliss. Cozied up to the Atlantic Ocean and set, jewel-like, on a remote, 60-acre parcel of forest, the Hilton Tangier Al Houara wants to put you into a trance and keep you there. It does that with its airy, open architecture (think vaulted ceilings and archways), spacious rooms, serene green spaces and Xanadu-worthy, palm-lined pool. As of September 2022, it also does it with golf: two tracks, an 18-holer and an illuminated 9-hole short course, courtesy of Vijay Singh and design partner Graham Marsh. Tipping out at 7550 yards and spread across 270 acres, the main course is primarily inland, open and flat enough to afford views of the ocean — when you’re not otherwise occupied by Singh and Marsh’s water hazards. It was once said that only a man who has felt ultimate despair is capable of feeling ultimate bliss. Did he tee it up at Al Houara? [ LEARN MORE HERE ]

The Palace of the Lost City Sun City, South Africa

A legendary destination designed by dreamers for luxury-seekers. Since inception in 1992, The Palace of the Lost City has enthralled visitors from all over the globe. Its unique setting in South Africa, on an extinct volcanic site among the Pilanesberg mountains, is matched by the inspired architecture and passionate attention to detail for which The Palace of the Lost City is renowned. Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Fans of the DP World Tour will know the resort’s 27-hole golf course — Abu Dhabi Golf Club — from its decade-long run (through 2021) as host site of the HSBC Golf Championship, which has a winner’s roll that includes the likes of Rickie Fowler, Shane Lowry and Tommy Fleetwood. The course is also known for its inimitable clubhouse, which resembles a falcon with outstretched wings. The resort itself also has a winning reputation, with 172 rooms that all offer golf-course views; six restaurants; and the Heavenly Spa, which allows guests to “immerse themselves in a unique world of physical and mental renewal.” Two pools will help you escape the desert heat. While the resort will cater to all your needs, one of its other appeals is its location — just 15 minutes from the heart of Abu Dhabi and 10 minutes from the primary airport. If you’re looking to get off campus, nearby attractions include biking trails, city tours and desert safaris. [ LEARN MORE HERE ]

7 international destinations perfect for a golf trip.

You’ve played some of the best golf courses in the United States . Now, you’re looking to pack your clubs, rally some friends, and hit the links on an international golf trip. But which parts of the world boast the best collection of golf courses?

Top Golf Destinations

From Latin America to the South Pacific — and, of course, Scotland — here’s a list of seven international destinations perfect for a golf trip.

1. Scotland: The Birthplace of Golf

The famous Swilcan bridge on the 18th hole of the Old Course links in St Andrews, Scotland. Many ... [+] famous golfers have traditionally posed for photographs on this bridge at the end of their tournament rounds, thanking the crowds for their support. The Royal & Ancient clubhouse can be seen towards the left of the background.

The Scottish seaside town of St. Andrews is known around the world as the birthplace of golf, and the iconic Old Course headlines most golfers’ bucket lists. Book a stay at the golf-inspired Rusacks St Andrews , where rooms come with views of the hallowed turf.

Even if you can’t score a tee time at the Old Course, there’s plenty more courses beckoning. In fact, Scotland has more golf courses per person than anywhere else in the world. From the links of Fife to courses along the dunes of Aberdeenshire’s coast, the country has more than 550 courses.

Scotland’s weather is known to fluctuate, but the golf season is typically April to September.

2. Ireland: A Links Paradise

One of the best robin williams comedies ever made lands on netflix today, drake and kendrick lamar feud timeline lamar drops second diss track 6 16 in la, outlander finally comes to netflix with an incredible new season.

Adare Manor in Ireland.

Ireland is nicknamed the “green of dreams” and the island is home to more than 400 golf clubs. A third of the world’s natural links courses are here, and more than 240,000 golfers make the pilgrimage to Ireland each year to play on the unforgiving fairways.

In County Limerick, Adare Manor is a coveted stay for golfers. The championship golf course designed by golf architect Tom Fazio will host the 2027 Ryder cup.

While most courses are open all year round, the best time for Ireland golf trips is from April to October. In peak summer, it stays light out until 10 p.m., which means you can play a couple of rounds and make the most of your golf vacation.

3. Fiji: Luxury Private Island Greens

Denaru Golf & Racquet Club

Fiji is a draw for all types of vacationers, from honeymooners to scuba divers. But it’s also a golfer’s paradise in the South Pacific, with more than a dozen courses scattered across the islands and stunning fairways lined with palm trees.

For those coming for golf, Viti Levu, the main island, is home to three championship courses: Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course, which is located at the InterContinental Resort and comes with Pacific Ocean views, Denarau Golf & Racquet Club, and The Pearl South Pacific Golf Course.

Fun fact: The country has even produced one of the world’s top golfers, Vijay Singh, who fell in love with the game at the Nadi Airport Golf Course.

4. New Zealand: Dramatic Scenery

Te Arai Links in Tomarata, New Zealand

In New Zealand, golf is the sport with the highest participation among both men and women. The country has more than 400 golf courses, and the dramatic landscapes — from craggy, isolated coastlines tracing the greens to soaring mountains in the alpine areas — make it one of the most idyllic destinations for golfers.

Renowned architect Tom Doak has said “no country has seen its golf courses improve more over the past 20 years than New Zealand.” One of his famous New Zealand courses is Cape Kidnappers, which is perched above the ocean on clifftops, and built on ridge-and-valley landscape.

A 90 minute drive from Auckland (or 25 minutes via helicopter), Te Arai Links , which has two links golf courses along the coastline is also a sought-after destination. One course was designed by Doak, and the other is from Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. In between tee times, the area is known for its surf breaks and lively nearby market towns, Mangawhai and Matakana, as well as its vineyards and olive groves.

October through April is considered high season, and golfers will pay less the other times of year.

5. Mexico: Mountain, Desert And Ocean Landscapes

Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto

Los Cabos and the Baja Peninsula have long dominated as one of the best golf destinations in not just Latin America, but the world, thanks to its mountain-desert-ocean landscape, gentle sea breezes, and a collection of cacti-studded courses designed by some of the world’s greatest golf architects, like Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Greg Norman and Robert Trent Jones, Jr.

In Loreto, which is on the Eastern coast of Baja California Peninsula, golfers can tee off in a UNESCO World Heritage site when they play a round at Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto by Danzante Bay, which overlooks the turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez. Travelers can book packages Unlimited Golf or Spa that comes with unlimited rounds for three days.

Golf continues to grow and get better throughout Mexico, with more than 200 courses to play. Beyond the Baja Peninsula, some other top golf spots in Mexico include the courses dotting the Pacific Coastline and in the Riviera Maya, like El Camaleón, an 18-hole, Greg Norman-designed course that moves through tropical jungle, mangroves, and past freshwater canals. It’s also the first PGA Tour Course in Latin America.

6. Vietnam: A Fast-Growing Golf Destination

Hoiana Shores in Vietnam

For golfers looking for the next ‘it’ destination, turn your attention to Vietnam, where some of the world’s best golf architects are designing courses in the mountains, jungles, and along its coastline. Before 2020, there were about 80 golf courses in Vietnam, many attached to luxury resorts. By 2025, more than 200 courses will be built out.

Golfers can find year-round golf in Vietnam, heading into the highlands like Dalat for a cool mist and mountain breezes and hitting and booking tee times in Ho Chi Minh City and Southern Vietnam throughout the year. November to April is dry and cool in Northern Vietnam, and the same goes for Central Vietnam from February to May.

Hoina Shores Golf Club , designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., is a must-play for any golf enthusiast visiting Vietnam. It’s located within the $4 billion Hoiana Casino and Resort development on the Vietnamese coast south of Danang.

7. Mauritius: Bucket List Golf Destination

Anahita Golf Club

Mauritius is known for its stunning beaches and lush rainforests and unofficial world wonders like the Chamarel Seven Colored Earth Geopark, a sand dune bursting with colors. But this island in the Indian Ocean also has a history of golf. The tourism office claims that in 1844, when it was under British rule, Mauritius was the third country in the world to be introduced to the sport and Gymkhana Golf Club was the fourth country club in the world where golf was played

Today, Mauritius has 10 18-hole courses and three 9-hole golf courses, including the bucket-list worthy Iles aux Cerfs Golf Club at Shangri-La Le Touessrok, Mauritius . Golfers take a complimentary boat shuttle to the golf course where 18 holes come with scenic ocean views. The resort’s second course is Anahita Golf Club, which is set on a former sugar plantation and backed by mountains and fringed by a lagoon.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

Vladimir Putin is rounding up illegal migrants in Russia  to fuel his bloody invasion of Ukraine, just days after four Tajik nationals were charged over the Crocus terror attack in Moscow, with migrant groups left fearing bloody retaliation.

Paddy wagons sporting the National Guard insignia arrived at a vast online shopping warehouse in Elektrostal, Moscow today, where thousands of migrant workers were reportedly forced to show their documents.

Checks were carried out by armed and masked Russian guards and military enlistment officers, before at least 40 people were hauled away from the Wildberries warehouse.

More operations in kind are said to be planned, as Putin seeks more cannon fodder for his ongoing war in Ukraine.

It comes just days after the Crocus City Hall atrocity, which led to the deaths of at least 140 people after gunmen stormed a packed concert venue in the capital and indiscriminately targeted civilians before setting the building on fire.

A number of men from Tajikistan have since been detained in connection to the attacks, which have been claimed by jihadist group Islamic State.

Friday's horror attack has been linked to a rise in tensions, with the BBC today reporting an increase in beatings and racism aimed at Central Asian migrants - and the embassy of Tajikistan in Russia warning citizens not to leave their homes unless necessary.

Vehicles emblazoned with Rosgvardiya (Rosguard, the National Police) were seen outside the warehouse in Moscow as officials rounded up illegal migrants, some destined for Ukraine

Some of the migrants detained today will reportedly face the choice of jail or expulsion - or fighting in Ukraine for Russia.

Migrants who have been granted Russian citizenship also express fears they may be called up.

'They check who is on the side of the military, and who is evading,' one said. 'Those who evade can be taken away against their will.'

'Whoever resists is beaten with sticks by the riot police,' said another worker.

A further 38 employees of the warehouse will undergo additional checks with law enforcement to 'clarify' information gathered already, the Wildberries company told state-owned news agency RIA.

It came a day after Putin spoke on the urgency of bringing the 'migration sphere ... under control' at a meeting with the board of the Prosecutor General's Office, RIA noted.

Putin reportedly ordered that measures be handled 'professionally and competently' to 'facilitate the adoption of legal, informed and fair decisions'.

Still, critics fear the atrocity in Moscow last week is already leading to discriminatory behaviour towards migrants living in Russia.

In Novgorod region, it has been prohibited to hire foreign workers in the transport sector.

State Duma deputy Dmitry Gusev has also called for a complete 'audit' of all labour migrants living in the country - as well as those who have recently received Russian citizenship.

In Moscow, a 29-year-old woman from Yakutia was surrounded by a hostile mob on the metro and subjected to vile racist abuse.

'Get the **** out of here,' she was told - even though she is a Russian citizen.

The group reportedly ally with neo-Nazi Maxim Martsinkevich, nicknamed Tesak, meaning Machete, who died from 'asphyxia' in a Russian jail in 2020.

The scared woman said: 'It was 6.30 pm. I was waiting for the train… Very young guys…came up to me.

'One of them, the most active one, took a metal bat out of his jacket and showed me.

'They surrounded me and began to humiliate me… They called me names from the platform based on my nationality and appearance.'

She said no-one came to her aid.

Two of those threatening her were detained today and face questioning.

On Telegram, migrants from Tajikistan have shared messages expressing fears the community in Russia will suffer for the Crocus attack, as reported by the BBC.

Sharing their concern over retributive attacks, one said: 'Please, God, let [the attackers] be Ukrainian instead.'

Russia's Federal Security Service, or the FSB, said it had arrested 11 people the day after the attack, including four suspected gunmen.

Moscow's Basmanny District Court identified the four suspects behind the attack as Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, 32; Saidakrami Rachabalizoda, 30; Shamsidin Fariduni, 25; and Mukhammadsobir Faizov, 19.

The four men, identified as Tajik nationals, appeared in a Moscow court on Sunday on terrorism charges and showed signs of severe beatings.

One appeared to be barely conscious during the hearing.

The men were charged with committing a group terrorist attack resulting in the death of others. The offence carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

They were all ordered to be held in pre-trial custody until May 22.

Mirzoyev and Rachabalizoda admitted guilt after being charged, according to AP, citing court officials.

While Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack, President Vladimir Putin has said the four men were arrested while trying to flee to Ukraine.

Kyiv denies any connection to the attack.

Putin has made no reference to ISIS' claims.

US intelligence also said after the attack it had information confirming ISIS was responsible for the attack.

Yesterday, head of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) Alexander Bortnikov bizarrely pinned blame on the United States, Britain and Ukraine.

Speaking after the meeting with the board of the Prosecutor General's Office, he was asked whether the US, Britain and Ukraine were behind the terrorist attack, according to Russian news agency TASS .

'We believe that this is true. In any case, we are now talking about the factual information we have. This is general information, but they have a long record of this sort.'

'What is [Ukraine] expected to do to demonstrate its capability? It is expected to carry out sabotage and terrorist acts in the rear,' he continued.

'This is what both the chiefs of Ukraine's special services and the British special services are aiming at. US special services have repeatedly mentioned this, too.'

The Crocus Concert Hall was attacked by armed gunmen on March 22, when terrorists opened fire on civilians and set the auditorium on fire in Russia's deadliest attack in 20 years.

According to the latest data, 140 people have been confirmed dead as a result of the attack, the most recent dying in hospital today.

A total of 80 people injured in the attack remain hospitalized, the official added, and 205 others have sought outpatient medical assistance.

The Moscow Times reported today as many as 360 had been injured in the attack.

Three days before the attack, Putin denounced the U.S. Embassy's March 7 notice urging Americans to avoid crowds in Moscow , including concerts, calling it an attempt to frighten Russians and 'blackmail' the Kremlin ahead of the presidential election.

After Britain echoed the notice, Kremlin mouthpieces accused both of 'complicity' if terrorists did hit Moscow.

ISIS' news agency Amaq released sickening a 90-second selfie video of the attack that is too graphic for MailOnline to share

The news of a terror warning on March 7 came only hours after the FSB claimed to have thwarted an ISIS plot to slaughter Jews in a Moscow synagogue.

It was unclear whether the events are linked.

According to the FSB, a large cache of weapons and bomb parts were found during a raid on an Islamic State cell in Kaluga, southwest of the capital.

Russian state media reported militants had been gearing up to shoot Jewish worshippers at a synagogue in the capital before security officials stormed the premises and gunned them down.

'While being arrested, the terrorists put up armed resistance to the Russian FSB officers, and as a result were neutralised by return fire,' the Russian state-owned TASS news agency quoted the security service as saying in a statement.
