Moriti Private Safaris

Unforgettable Lion Safaris in Africa (2023)

Lion safaris in Africa are the most popular wildlife tours where visitors can see lions in their natural habitats, usually in African savannas. These tours are usually done in countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana and are a big part of our safari offering here at Moriti.

The tours can be done by various means such as open safari vehicles, boats, or by air and are guided by experienced guides who provide information about the lions and their behaviour. It is important to choose a responsible tour operator that follows ethical wildlife viewing practices.

If lions are on the top of your list, you will need to check out the below and start planning your safari soon!

Lion Safaris in South Africa

South Africa is home to some of the most iconic wildlife , including the majestic lion, and there are many safari options that allow visitors to observe these extraordinary animals in their natural habitat.

Game reserves that Moriti operates in both privately and commercially include Kruger National Park , Sabi Sands Game Reserve , Timbavati Private Game Reserve , Klaserie Private Nature Reserve and Phinda Private Game Reserve .

When planning a lion safari in South Africa, it’s important to research the different options and choose a reputable safari operator or lodge that prioritizes responsible and sustainable tourism practices. You do not want to arrive here and realise that you are about to embark on a “commercial factory safari” as we call it. You deserve better, at least we think so!

Some of t he awesome destinations Moriti operate in are The Okavango Delta , Moremi Game Reserve , Central Kalahari Game Reserve and Savuti Marsh which is located in Chobe National Park and is known for its large population of lions . Visitors can take game drives to observe these big cats in their natural environment.

Zimbabwe and Zambia are both home to some of the most unrestricted wildlife in Africa , including the majestic lion. Often overlooked, these destinations offer up some of the best opportunities and, most importantly, the best guides you will ever get.

Moriti operates extensively in Zimbabwe & Zambia and is proud to offer sustainable safaris in the most beautiful reserves in Africa such as Hwange National Park (Zimbabwe), Mana Pools National Park (Zimbabwe) and Kafue National Park (Zambia) which, ironically is home to some of Africa’s best and most unique lions . Our guests can take guided game drives, walks and water-based safaris to celebrate these big cats in their natural environment.

Best destinations to view lions in Africa…

South Africa

Hluhluwe Safari

The oldest proclaimed nature reserve in South Africa . It consists of 960 km² of mountainous landscape, in central KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. It is known for its rich wildlife and conservation efforts . The park is one of the very few parks in KwaZulu-Natal where the Big Five can be found.

3 Day Kruger Safari

South Africa’s biggest national park is home to the country’s greatest diversity of wildlife . Kruger’s real draw is an almost guaranteed encounter with the super-celebrities of the safari circuit: Africa’s iconic Big 5 . You can expect sightings of them all year round .

Male Lions Phinda

This reserve encompasses an impressive 286 km² (110 mi²) of protected wildlife land . It offers some of Africa’s finest game viewing experiences , as well as 436 bird species. The reserve is particularly well known for close-up sightings of the elegant yet elusive cheetah, as well as the rare black rhino .

Kalahari Plains Camp, Wilderness Safaris

Wild, mysterious and just unthinkably vast , the Central Kalahari Game Reserve is a true wilderness that will give you the impression that you are exploring Africa on your own . Rich grasslands surround you by day whilst the skies at night are as clear as you could ever imagine.

Elephant Crossing The Linyanti River

This is a vast area of pristine wilderness located in the north of Botswana . The entire area is superb for elephants . There are a few rival prides of lion and this is also an excellent area for spotting the elusive leopard and rare wild dog .

Pek's Fishing Owl At Xigera Camp Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is one of the most inspiring wilderness locations in Africa , if not the entire planet. The Delta is a truly unspoiled wilderness with terrain ranging from dry grasslands to swamps . Possible animals to be sighted include cheetahs, lion prides, leopards on the prowl , zebra, giraffes and elephants.

Zimbabwe & Zambia

Walking Safari In Hwange National Park

This most famous park in Zimbabwe provides a haven for 107 mammal species and more than 400 recorded types of birds. If it’s elephants you want to see (there are between 45,000 and 60,000 living in Hwange), then this is the place. Hwange is most commonly combined with Victoria Falls .

Lion Jumping Over Water On A 7 Day Zambia Safari

Kafue National Park covers a massive 22,400 km². I t remains little-known and largely unexplored with vast tracts of its virgin bush still untouched. Thanks to its size and variety of habitat types the it holds a fantastic diversity of wildlife . The Busanga Plains is famed for its prides of lions .

Elephants In Mana Pools

Mana Pools is considered one of the prettiest reserves in the world . Its location near the Zambezi River gives it large pools that support an amazing collection of wildlife . Canoe safaris , a terrific way to see animals. It’s also one of the best places in Southern Africa to see endangered wild dogs .

Moriti will tailor something specifically for you to go lion adventur ing on . Check out our tailor-made safari enquiry form

Private African Safaris & Tours

A private African safari offers the ultimate in freedom, combined with the security of having your own vehicle and guide. Rolling through the African wilds, stopping to sight zebras and impalas, pausing to drink tea in a village cafe, choosing your itinerary as you go. Go where you want, when you want and with whom you want. This is the most enjoyable way to see the wonders of Africa. A private safari tour can be as basic or as plush as you like. If you’re on a budget, hire a jeep and driver through a tour company and work out your holiday details yourself. At the opposite end, a private safari tour can be a fully organized luxury package with everything scheduled down to the last minute.

“Freedom! A private safari is the way to go if you value flexibility. Traveling in this manner means you can build your own itinerary and focus on your own likes and interests. Want more time than most tour group safaris allow in a park? A private tour will allow you to add in extra days as you please. Within reason, a private safari allows you to change the schedule as you go along, although accommodation bookings can still make this difficult. This type of holiday is ideal for groups of friends or traveling families. If you’re traveling with children, a private safari is the only way to go. A private safari can also be as organized or flexible as you like. It offers all the advantages of independent travel, but with the comfort and security of a private vehicle and guide and driver. In most respects, this is the best way to see Africa. It will, of course, cost more than a group safari.”

How is a private safari different from a group safari?

“On a shared or group tour, you will join a group of other travelers. You will get a private room or tent but the vehicle and activities will be shared with others. A private tour is organized exclusively for you. However, on some private tours the wildlife-viewing activities are run by the lodges and camps and will be shared with others. On a group safari, you’ll almost certainly be tied to a set itinerary. It can be near impossible to make even very minor changes to an itinerary. You will also be traveling with people you’ve never met before. This can be great if you all get along well. In some cases, you might even find that you make friends for life. But any slight personality clash can make the trip an uncomfortable experience for everyone. A private safari tour does away with these issues and gives you more freedom and independence. You’ll be creating your own group, or even traveling alone. This means that you’ll choose the travel partners you’ll be crammed into a vehicle with for two weeks. A private trip like this does cost a lot more than a group safari.”

What type of vehicles can I expect?

“This depends entirely on your budget. Obviously, the less you pay, the less you get. On a private, budget or lower mid-range safari you will get either a minibus with a pop-top roof or a small, unmodified 4x4. If your group is small enough to ensure that you all have your own window seat, such a vehicle is fine. If you’ve paid for a more expensive safari then you should get a large 4x4, which might even have modified suspension and open sides. This is the best kind of vehicle for a safari as it gives everyone in the group a superb view of the wildlife. When driving between parks and reserves, the sides can be raised to ensure the safety of the passengers.”

Can I decide my own program on a private safari tour?

“The answer to this depends on the type of trip you’re on. If you’re on a high-end luxury tour, usually only minor changes can be made once the safari has begun. This is because most accommodation will have been booked in advance, making major schedule changes complicated. When it comes to the day-to-day schedule though, the choice is all yours. If you don’t feel like yet another dawn safari, it’s no problem to give it a miss. Likewise, if you prefer to spend longer than planned out on a drive or throw in an unplanned village visit, it should be simple to do so. On an independent private safari, a safari company does nothing more than supply you with a vehicle and driver. On this type of safari, you can make changes without too many issues. Again, accommodation bookings might be difficult to alter though. No matter what kind of trip you’re on, a private safari tour means you can choose where and when to stop.”

Is a private trip safe? What about if I am traveling by myself?

“If you’re using a reputable safari company, a private safari is no more or less safe than a group safari. In these circumstances, we’d suggest paying a little more and going with a more upmarket company with better trained guides and drivers. While most safari companies are reliable, problems can arise. For example, issues with inferior or mechanically unreliable vehicles. Or drivers and guides who exert pressure on safari-goers to schedule the day around their priorities rather than those of the safari-goers. These incidents are more likely on private tours than organized group tours. Generally, they are also more likely with budget operators, whereas they would be almost unheard of with a private luxury safari. Do your research and choose your tour operator carefully.”

What should I consider when choosing a private safari tour?

“There are several points to consider. Check what sort of vehicle you will be provided. Ask if you’ll have a guide and a driver and how experienced they are. In some countries, guides are graded, which helps ensure a general standard. Consider whether you want to book accommodation in advance or play it by ear. The advantage of organizing accommodation as you go along is that it gives you total flexibility over your itinerary. The disadvantage is that at busy times you might not get to stay in the places you’d like. When designing your itinerary, try not to cram in too much in too short a time. It’s far better to see one or two parks and reserves in detail than to race around ticking off all a country has to offer in two weeks.”

All was great except the village walk in Maun( I believe) was a holiday so our guide took us to a political church service! Singing was good but was not what we paid to see. Very disappointed!

We enjoyed the experience. The only negative place was the lodge in Hwange, totally substandard, we were supposed to be there 2 nights but moved out after the first night. Must mention Mark, Fines, Peace and the other 2 guides that went over and above their duties to satisfy our needs.

10 Days Uganda's Gorillas Encounter, Wildlife & Kigali City Tour ( Private tour)

The most wonderful tour, Hami and John create a home away from home/extended family feel while introducing us to the absolutely gorgeous parks of Uganda. So lucky and thankful to have been able to spend this time with them! Would recommend Mukisa to everyone with no reservations!

13- Day Uganda Expedition: Experience Moments with Gorillas, Wildlife and Cultural Experiences ( Private tour) Tour

13- Day Uganda Expedition: Experience Moments with Gorillas, Wildlife and Cultural Experiences ( Private tour)

With the resumption of the travel industry globally, we thought of going for a holiday and Africa emerged as our travel destination. We decided to first visit Uganda as it’s been our dream of seeing the gorillas. We contacted a few travel agents and Richard of Mukisa Safaris proved to be extremely prompt, courteous and helpful. Initially, we had intended on spending only 5 days in Uganda since our main aim was to see gorillas. We were however assured by Richard that Uganda has more to offer and he customized our tour that involved wildlife, community visits, water rafting, chimp tracking in addition to gorilla trekking. During our email and Whatsapp exchanges, Richard was very prompt, informative, helpful and reliable. On our arrival at the Ugandan airport, we were received by Richard together with his team. The safari immediately commenced with traveling to Jinja for water adventure. It was such an awesome expedition of rafting on water. After rafting, we returned to Kampala where we spent our night in a very beautiful, clean hotel. The following day, we resumed with our safari and traveled to Murchison Falls National park though we first visited and tracked Rhinos at Ziwa. Murchison falls is a beautiful park with green rolling plains and greatly endowed with a variety of animals. The wildlife safari continued to Queen Elizabeth and Lake Mburo National Park and during the game drives, we saw all the Big 5 of Africa. The walking safari in Lake Mburo was very fascinating as we got close to most of the animals especially the beautiful and peaceful zebras. Ugandans are extremely hospitable people and they have left everlasting smiles on our faces. They were so friendly during our social and community interactions with them. Towards the last days of our safari, it was time for our dream of seeing the gorillas come true. After briefing, we requested for the most challenging hike since we wanted to experience every single detail of the trekking exercise. After walking in the dense forest for 3 hours, we finally found the gorillas and they were feeding. Wow…….It was such an amazing moment standing up close to the gorillas seeing them carry on with their activities. If possible, every person would experience this. If it wasn’t by policy that after founding gorillas you are allowed to stay in their vicinity for one hour, we would have stayed with them admiring these beautiful giants. Importantly to note, during our 2 weeks in Uganda, we were in the company of Hamida and John as our guide and driver respectively. These two were very hospitable, caring, informative, courteous, and friendly and they made our trip a success. Hamida was very knowledgeable about everything in Uganda and we were moved by her vast knowledge about birds and animals and during our stay with them, we felt safe and secure. I recommend Mukisa Safaris to any one intending to travel to Uganda.

Great experiences in the National Park We had a super great, well organized two weeks in the Serengeti National Park, as well as in the Ngorogoro Crater. We were picked up on time at the airport in Arusha at the very beginning and had perfect service from then on. We were together with Jerome D. Swai and the driver Cypiars which both can only be recommended. Jerome cooks wonderful food!!! We did a trip in tents, was just great the feeling to be so close to the wild nature. Can only say: Top people, top quality, top food and super much seen. It was just great, thank you again to meet you. Greetings from Switzerland P.S: Since spontaneously write here, only photos of photos from our safari photo book :-), hope that still gives an approximate impression of the experienced.

16 Days Best Of Kenya & Tanzania Luxury Safari

Our 14-day Kenya and Tanzania Migration Lodge Safari was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment we arrived in Nairobi to the final farewell, every day was filled with awe-inspiring moments and unforgettable experiences. Our adventure began with a warm welcome in Nairobi,Transfer to hotel Ole Sereni where our knowledgeable guide briefed us on the journey ahead. The luxurious accommodations provided a perfect blend of comfort and immersion in the African wilderness.African Brekafast was great!!! Amboseli National Park in Kenya was our first stop, and the sight of majestic elephants roaming against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro took our breath away. We witnessed thrilling wildlife encounters during our game drives, including close encounters with lions and cheetahs.Sopa lodges so magnificient. Crossing into Tanzania, border abit slow but was well organized with changing guides from Zack the genius to John M. Lake Manyara National Park enchanted us with its diverse landscapes and abundant birdlife. Spotting tree-climbing lions was a highlight, and the boat safari on Lake Manyara offered a serene perspective of the park's beauty. The Serengeti National Park was the epitome of safari magic. Witnessing the Great Migration firsthand was a dream come true as we watched thousands of wildebeests and zebras thunder across the plains. Our lodge perched on the edge of the Serengeti provided uninterrupted views of the vast savannah and unforgettable sunsets.Serena lodges are super ! Descending into the Ngorongoro Crater felt like entering a lost world teeming with wildlife. We marveled at the sheer abundance of animals in this natural amphitheater, from graceful gazelles to mighty rhinos. The grand finale awaited us in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The Mara River crossings were the highlight of our safari, as we held our breath watching the dramatic spectacle unfold before our eyes. Our expert guide John , ensured we had front-row seats to nature's greatest show. Each evening, we gathered around the campfire under the starlit sky, sharing stories of the day's adventures and listening to the sounds of the African night. The hospitality of the lodge staff made us feel like family, and the delicious cuisine was a delightful surprise. As we bid farewell to Kenya and Tanzania, we carried with us memories that will last a lifetime. This safari exceeded all expectations, thanks to the impeccable planning and personalized service. It truly was the journey of a lifetime, and I cannot wait to return to Africa's wild embrace.Masai Mara crowned all the taste of an Africa Photo Safari - Sopa Lodges tastifully located at great views of sunset thank you Zack again for picking us from the other border point for this gtreat encounter with wildlife . I would recommend thsi tour to many who really want to see the great diverse landscape and lakes plus plains in Africa - Serenegeti and Mara plains.

African Safari Tour Reviews

The tour was very well organized. Everything worked up quite well and everyone took good care of us. It was a magnificent time in Tanzania's wild nature. Also the tour company took care of all changes online (one day early arrival and extra shira tour booking) in a flexible and timely manner. Our Safari guide and driver Israel did really a great job. He worked hard to find all the animals for us as good as possible. This wasn't an easy job as we were there during rain season. He kept us safe and well informed all the time. We saw many wild animals such as cheetahs, lions, giraffes, buffalos, elephants, hippos, hyenas and of course tons of Gnus, zebras and all kinds of antilopes, monkeys and birds. We could even see some of the big five like the lion from eye to eye, roaming around less than 1m from our vehicle! Of course there's no guaranty of which wild animals you'll see as we're talking about natural parks, but you can rest assured the guides are doing their best to show you what nature is offering during your visit. All the staff in the hotels, parks and people in general were very kind and very welcoming! The food was always good and safe. FYI, the actual safari is 5 days + 2 days arrival and departure. Nevertheless within these 5 days we saw so many places and had a unique nature experience. "Luxury" as mentioned in the title is a bit too much said, especially when it comes to accommodation. On the other hand all the hotel names/ratings and the exact itinerary were mentioned clearly so no surprises. The luxurious part was actually that we were only on our own since it's low season :) Our guide Israel was flexible and fulfilled every possible wish we had. The Maasai village tour in the way to Serengeti costs an extra 50$ which is a fair price but they will also offer you some overpriced hand-made souvenirs to buy. The tour itself was very interesting and nice including a welcome song and dance basically from the whole village :) The Serengeti Safari lounge was quite spacious and had a big balcony to enjoy the endless view of the Serengeti. That was definitely the best accommodation of the trip. We woke up to a great show of a huge group of Gnus and Zebras directly in front of our balcony. The very ones who were singing for us all night :) Last but not least: if you're wondering about the prices even for a day tour, you should know that the park fees including conservation fees are quite high. So you're basically contributing to the well-being of these parks as well as the many wonderful people protecting them.
A bit late with the review... The trip was November 2019 and it was the best trip ever!!! Simon best guide, stunning places, welcoming locals and amazing experiences! the flight over the Okavango Delta is highly recommended.

Lion Sands Game Reserve

african lion safari private tour

Broader region.

Lion Sands Tinga Lodge

The Lion Sands Game Reserve is a world renowned Big 5 safari reserve, known firstly for unforgettable wildlife sightings and secondly for the level of quality of the luxury lodges on the reserve.

This private game reserve has 4 luxury lodges situated on the reserve. Whilst the 5 star rating is common amongst the lodges, the experiences at each are unique. In 2019, Conde Naste voted Lion Sands Game Reserve as one of the top 20 resorts in Africa, solidifying the reserve as a must-visit for anyone looking for that special experience on the continent.

The private status of the reserve translates perfectly to the exclusivity of the safari experience for guests. The only game drives taking place on the reserve are those that depart from one of the four luxury lodges. With full traversing rights across the private reserve and world class game rangers, the safari experience is unparalleled.

Highlights:

- Highly trained guides

- Big 5 safari experience

- Quiet & exclusive game driving

- Walking safaris

Best time to visit Lion Sands Game Reserve is during the dry winter season, as temperatures remain comfortable and you can view a cluster of animals near water sources. The dry winter season is from May to September.

The Dry season, from June to September, is the best time for wildlife viewing. Highly recommended are the months of August and September as temperatures are warmer than in mid-winter. It is also the end of a long, dry period and this causes the animals to congregate around known water sources, making sightings even easier.

Lion Sands Game Reserve is the only private reserve to have a foot in both the Sabi Sand Game Reserve and Kruger National Park. The Sabi Sand Reserve is the oldest of South Africa’s private reserves, and the origin of wildlife tourism in Southern Africa. It is home to a vast natural animal population including The Big Five and countless other species (some of which are critically endangered).

Flanking the Kruger National Park, animals pass unhindered between the unfenced reserves. Known for its extraordinary leopard viewing, safari enthusiasts could not find a better place for close-contact animal sightings that many would insist are the best in the world.

The Sabi Sand Reserve (Sabi Sand Wildtuin) shares a 50km (31.25 miles) unfenced border with the Kruger National Park. This extraordinary and unique wilderness area comprises a collection of privately owned game reserves which combine to form a mammoth tract of pristine game land (65 000 hectare/ 153 000 acres).

Being privately owned, safaris are not restricted to specific times and routes. Open vehicles are able to traverse off road and into the dense bush, tracking animals in their natural habitat.

Anja is awesome!
Anja is awesome!! She went above and beyond for me as I had several changes until I locked in my bucket list itinerary and then my friend cancelled. She wasn't mad and just went about cancelling her portion which saved me money in the long run. Anja is a true professional regardless and I have been dealing with her since Sept 2023. Cannot wait until my trip in Sept 2024.

Shann was beyond amazing
Shann was beyond amazing. Listened to our needs, communicated super-efficiently and gave really honest excellent advice. She was so patient, kind and professional. The time difference across the globe made no difference. I am so excited for the itinerary she has put together. I usually cobble my own itinerary together for our holidays and it’s so time consuming and hard work. This was a piece of cake! Thank you Shann.
Great planning and service
Great planning and service, and everything worked like clockwork. We booked an Inyari Lodge safari with air with Safari.com. it wasn't clear if there will be 2 or three of us, so with Candis' help we booked a family chalet for 2 and added the third later when it was confirmed he can come. Candis put us on flights that maximized our game drive time (unlike some of the other guests) so we got all 6 drives in 3 nights. The lodge was great. Especially the game drives. We saw more than we hoped for. Additionally, Safari.com's insurance was very competitive. Highly recommended.

Tailor Made Safaris

Popular safaris, east & central africa, southern africa, set departures, top destinations, indian ocean islands, "what kind of safaris do we offer", enquire now.

The variety of African safari tours are diverse, incredibly complex and can be quite overwhelming at times. If you’re new, where do you start? That’s where we come in!

We’ve got experience in all the different types of safari tours, we have been to all locations and we’ve have done all the ‘homework’ and filtering for you. Ensuring that – no matter your style of travel, you’re in the capable hands of real people who have been there and got the t-shirt.

Different types of African Safari Tours:

A self-drive safari is a fantastic way to see Africa on your own steam. It involves either traveling in your own vehicle, or renting a capable one from a reputable company, and driving yourself from point A to point B. This can be done by stopping at fantastic campsites along the way, by going lodge to lodge, or a combination of both. It gives you great flexibility of being able to decide how and when things happen and is also one of the most affordable means to traverse the continent. A self-drive safari is thus for the traveller who prefers to do things by themselves, are more adventurous and budget conscious, or are seeking to spend a longer period road tripping through Africa.

Read more on Self-drive here.

Classic Safari

A classic safari is for those travellers who don’t want to self-drive, but also don’t necessarily want a luxury safari. They are after a good quality safari experience at a reasonable price. This can often be the hardest type of safari to get right! With thousands of options out there all claiming to be the best, it can be hard to filter out the nonsense and find those hidden gems. Finding the best safari camps at a reasonable price point is one of our specialties! What you want is a small authentic camp with a great team of staff members, awesome food and access to incredible wildlife areas.

Browse our Safari Trip Ideas here.

Adventure Safari

Adventure is our expertise and our passion! An adventure safari is for the traveller who seeks to go beyond the norm, off the beaten track, out of their comfort zone and stay active whilst on safari. This type of safari could be classed as an adventure because of the location, the style of accommodation or the activities. You could find yourself visiting a very remote area, hard to get too or with an intense wildlife experience usually far from the normal tourist route. The accommodation, often just a canvas tent with bedding somewhere in the wild, and even sometimes without a tent – just under a canopy of stars! And the activities can vary all the way from trekking for Gorillas, multi-day backpacking walking safaris, kayaking in the Okavango Delta, tracking lions on walking safaris and the list goes on! Its niche, its different, its exciting and that’s why we love it! We’ve identified many life-changing adventure safaris all across Africa.

Explore our Adventures here.

Private Safari

This is something that many people might have never heard about, or considered to be an option. A private safari is to enjoy Africa in your own exclusive small group or as a couple, without mixing with the other tourists. This typically includes private dinners, transfers, vehicles and safari activities (sometimes even the whole lodge or a private house!). This ensures that your particular needs can be met by the local guides and you can focus on what you enjoy, and not what others enjoy. Too often on safari there can be a culture clash between individuals from different nations, especially when on an activity or around a dinner table – this totally negates those moments and ensures you can enjoy every moment of your private safari. For those wanting to do a private safari, it is highly recommended to include the services of a professional private guide who will ensure a high standard and a smooth safari – just the way you want it! They will take care of all the logistics, level of service and tailoring the safari experience exactly to your requirements. They are often a specialist in the field of guiding and can boost your private safari to the next level! Especially for those interested in photography. This is by far the most enjoyable form of safari which is why many frequent safari Africa travellers take this route.

See our Private guides here.

Luxury Safari

For those travellers wanting the best of the best. A luxury safari can often take you to lodges of 5-star standards or higher – yes, it’s possible to go higher! We’re talking Egyptian cotton sheets, 5 course dinners with world-class wines and included helicopter flights. Luxury African safaris will see you exploring pristine wilderness areas often kept exclusively for the luxury lodge you are staying at. If you want a high quality, uninterrupted, and second-to-none wildlife experience with top quality guides – then a luxury safari is the way to go. A luxury safari doesn’t often come with a low-price tag, so if you are prepared to pay for the best then this is for you. Taking this a step further, would be to combine the above and do a luxury private safari with a top-notch private guide enhancing the experience even further! Now that’s luxury…

View our luxury lodges here.

 • Family Safari

Many would say a safari is not for families with kids, but we beg to differ. There are many lodges that specialize in family groups and have special family rooms and catering facilities specifically to make family travel a breeze. This can be a great way to expand your children’s views on the world and get them excited about nature. Often, it’s also a great way to entice your children off their electronic devices and enjoy being in the moment. Many wanting to travel Africa with children are also afraid of the risk of malaria on safari. However, there are destinations where families are welcome that are totally malaria free making the travel even more relaxed as the worried parent.

TRIP SUMMARY

With more elephant than any country in Africa, near perfect weather, few insects and few safety / health concerns, Botswana is the highest quality wildlife viewing destination on the continent – with luxury accommodations to match. Read more…

Set within exclusive wilderness areas, far from madding crowds imagine days spent driving off road in an open 4×4 vehicle, viewing hippo from a boat or canoe, and tracking elephant and giraffe on foot.

At night fall asleep to the roar of nearby lions at some of Africa’s most coveted high end safari properties! This trip starts at Nelson Mandela’s former home and ends at the mighty Victoria Falls – the world’s largest waterfall.

african lion safari private tour

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

You will be met on arrival at the airport and transfer by road to the Saxon for 1 night. Set on a private 10 acre estate in the exclusive Sandton area of Johannesburg the rooms start at 860 square feet.

Former South African president Nelson Mandela chose the Saxon as his sanctuary in which to complete his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom. The Saxon has been voted the world’s #1 boutique hotel every year since 2001. What more need we say? Accommodations: The Saxon, 1 night, bed and breakfast

Saxon, Johannesburg, South Africa – The world’s #1 boutique hotel every year since 2001. Set on a private 10 acre estate in the exclusive Sandton area of Johannesburg the rooms start at 860 square feet… former South African president Nelson Mandela chose the Saxon as his sanctuary in which to complete his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom. african lion safari private tour

MOREMI, BOTSWANA

Fly to Maun, Botswana before continuing by light aircraft (included in land cost) to Mombo Camp – arguably Africa’s most consistent and highest quality wildlife and wilderness experience.

From lion to leopard, elephant and giraffe the usual suspects can be found day and night – outside your room and while out on safari in one of the camps open 4×4 vehicles. One of our client’s noted a few years back “If you don’t stay at Mombo you really haven’t experienced Botswana”. We agree. Accommodations: Mombo Camp or Little Mombo, 3 nights, all inclusive

Mombo Camp / Little Mombo Camp, Moremi Reserve, Botswana – Arguably Africa’s highest quality and most consistent wildlife viewing location, and exclusive accommodations that are second to none. Main Mombo has 9 rooms while nearby Little Mombo has 3 rooms – each the same in terms of offerings. In 2013 it was voted the #1 property in Africa by Travel + Leisure. Conde Naste readers agreed in 2009 and 2010. Note: Main Mombo and Little Mombo will be rebuilt late 2016 / early 2017. The new Mombo will be divided into 2 camps with 9 and 3 rooms respectively. The new rooms will likely include plunge pools and game drives will take a maximum of 4 guests.

african lion safari private tour

OKAVANGO DELTA, BOTSWANA

Continue by air (included in land cost) to Paul Allen’s Abu Camp. Located in an exclusive 450,000 acre concession deep within Botswana’s famed Okavango Delta, Abu is one of the most impressive experiences we have had in Africa – ever!

Based around the return of several African elephants from captivity in Canada to the wilds of Africa to visit Abu Camp is to become part of the story, part of the family… you will fall in love with Paseka, the baby elephant saved from marauding hyenas and made famous in the documentary “The Easter Elephant” and you will admire Cathy, the matriarch, as you join the herd on an afternoon elephant interaction. Explore the Okavango’s crystal clear waterways in a traditional dugout canoe while the herd splashes you playfully and learn about elephant biology in the camp’s lab. Open vehicle game drives and walks are included as well. We truly cannot put into words how special Abu is. Accommodations: Abu Camp, 2 nights, all inclusive

Abu Camp, Okavango Delta, Botswana – Paul Allen’s 6 roomed Abu Camp offers some of the most luxurious accommodations in all of Botswana. Add to this one of the world’s most exclusive, bucket list wildlife experiences. Days are spent as part of the Abu family of elephants while nights can be spent in either your stylish and spacious room or in the aptly named “star bed”, an open air platform above the elephant boma – their rumbles permeating your African dreams. Abu is magical – you have to visit at least once in your life.

african lion safari private tour

SELINDA RESERVE, BOTSWANA

Continue by air (included in land cost) to Zarafa Camp. Set within the 320,000 acre private Selinda Reserve this area offers some of Africa’s most prolific animal viewing.

In addition to the camp’s resident elephant George wildlife includes lion, leopard, wild dog, hippo, massive herds of elephant, buffalo, journeys of giraffe, and so much more. As you are located outside of a national park walking is allowed along with day and night off road drives, canoeing and boating. Accommodations: Zarafa Camp, 3 nights, all inclusive

Zarafa Camp, Selinda Reserve, Botswana – Set within the 320,000 acre private Selinda Reserve this 4 roomed camp offers some of Africa’s most prolific animal viewing – far from the masses. In addition to staggering amounts of game the camp itself is regarded by many as the finest in Africa – it has won nearly every style and conservation award in the industry! Voted “Best Safari Property in Southern Africa” and “Best Safari Property in Africa” at the 2013 Safari Awards in addition to many others. Ultimate Africa Exclusive: As an Ultimate Africa client Zarafa will arrange a candlelit bush dinner under the stars your last evening – the perfect ending to your Botswana safari!

african lion safari private tour

VICTORIA FALLS, ZIMBABWE

Fly onwards (included in land cost) to the Victoria Falls Airport. You will be met upon arrival and transferred by road to Matetsi River Lodge where you will stay 2 nights on an all inclusive basis.

Set in a private 310 square mile game reserve you will find yourself surrounded by elephant, buffalo, predators and much more. Guests also have private access to 17 kilometers of the Upper Zambezi River as rapids to the east and west keep boat traffic away. Activities at Matetsi include wildlife viewing drives in open 4×4 vehicles, canoeing and sunset cruises, and a guided tour of the falls followed by high tea at the historic Victoria Falls Hotel. Accommodations: Matetsi River Lodge, 2 nights, all inclusive

Matetsi River Lodge, Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe – Frank Lloyd Wright meets the African bush! In our opinion Matetsi is easily the most luxurious property on either side of the Falls. Matetsi is made up of 2 separate 9 roomed lodges and the 4 roomed Matetsi River House which comes with a private guide and chef (ideal families and small groups). Rooms include a bedroom, sitting area, and bathrooms with free standing tubs in addition to indoor and outdoor showers. Each has a private plunge pool overlooking the river. The lodge also has a spa and fitness center, a 76 foot central pool, shop and wine cellar / bar.

More information

Why not Kruger / Sabi Sands? Kruger offers great game but is not an ideal wilderness experience. If you are visiting Botswana there is no need to visit Kruger. Having said that many people still want to combine the 2 areas and we are happy to do so.

Why not Chobe? We did not include Chobe National Park as it is too close to civilization with farmers in view during the day and city lights at night. It is crowded with traffic jams, you can’t drive off road, and walks are not allowed.

Linger Longer 3 to 5 nights in Cape Town, South Africa is the perfect complement to this trip. Luxury properties such as the Twelve Apostles, the Cape Grace Hotel, the One and Only, Tintswalo Atlantic, and Ellerman House represent, in our opinion, the best of the best.

Linger Longer Add 3 nights at South Africa’s best wildlife viewing location, Sabi Sands, adjoining Kruger National Park. A handful of luxury lodges have taken the exclusive safari experience to another level – Lion Sands Ivory (voted best hotel in the world), Singita Ebony and Singita Boulders (world’s #1 hotel numerous times), or any of the Londolozi Camps.

Linger Longer Add 3 nights at Royal Malewane. Located in South Africa’s Thornybush Reserve this lodge has a reputation for great game and handling exclusive, high end, clientele with ease! Linger Longer Spend 3 nights at Molori within South Africa’s Madikwe – a James Bond hideout in the bush. It is one of the most incredibly luxurious safari properties we have ever come across – the 5 rooms range from 2,500 square feet to over 6,600 square feet! Each comes with its own pool and chef. Surprisingly nightly rates are lower than many standard safari properties.

Getting to Africa From North America there are direct flights to Africa from Washington DC, New York and Atlanta. Alternatively you may fly via Europe, or even Dubai, to Africa. If you let us know the name of your preferred departure city we can provide you with airfare options. Air tickets may only be booked 330 days in advance. Please note air fares are subject to change over time. Most light aircraft transfers between lodges and camps are included in the land cost and are noted on the itinerary.

Is this a group trip? This is not a group trip. This trip can depart on any dates for 1 or more people (the trip costs have been based on 2 guests traveling together). With additional guests costs may change.

How much luggage can I bring? As small aircraft are often used to transfer travelers between lodges and camps body weight and luggage weight are important safety considerations. Baggage is strictly limited to 20 kilograms (44 pounds) packed in one or two soft sided bags plus a small backpack per person. This includes camera equipment. Suitcases will not be permitted. If you wish to exceed the luggage limit please inquire about the extra cost of doing so.

Your guides At Mombo Camp, Abu Camp, Zarafa Camp and at Matetsi River Lodge activities such as wildlife viewing drives, are shared with other guests (no more than 6 guests per vehicle) and are led by professionally licensed, local English speaking guides who are based at each safari camp / lodge. They know their areas intimately. Your safety and comfort are their highest concerns. They are also trained and prepared to respond to medical emergencies. If you prefer to have a private guide and vehicle at any location this can be arranged at extra cost.

Do I need shots? No. Most travelers do take anti-malaria tablets for the safari portion of their trip and get a Hepatitis A shot. We recommend that you visit with a local travel health specialist in your hometown to discuss any special concerns you might have.

Do I need an entry visa? American passport holders visiting Botswana and South Africa do not need entry visas. However an entry visa is required for Zimbabwe. Upon arrival at the Victoria Falls Airport a Zimbabwean entry visa may be purchased for US $30 cash per person.

How far in advance to book Most of the properties we recommend are small and dearly sought after. To ensure availability of accommodations we suggest planning and booking your travel arrangements at least 9-12 months in advance. If planning closer to your travel dates we may need to look at alternate properties to make things work.

How to make it happen At Ultimate Africa Safaris we do it all – from hotel and lodge bookings, to air tickets and travel insurance. We handle dinner reservations and celebrations as well – we love celebrations! The first step is to check availability at the various properties. We will then prepare a personal proposal for you. To learn more call our Seattle office toll free 1 800 461 0682. From outside the USA / Canada call on 425 222 4060. We are in between 9AM and 5PM weekdays. Alternatively email us at [email protected]

No money, no funny To confirm an itinerary we require a 30% of land cost non-refundable deposit per person. Your land payments may be made by credit card (MasterCard, Visa or American Express) or by debit card (MasterCard or Visa). Alternatively payments may be made by bank transfer or by personal, business or certified check made out to Ultimate Africa and posted to our office. Clients paying by bank transfer / check can save 2.5% off their land payments which will be credited to your invoice upon receipt of the check payment (please do not deduct this from your deposit amount). Future discounts will be applied to land payments made by check. Deposits must be accompanied by completed reservation forms. Upon receipt of your deposit full trip details will be posted to your address. This includes a confirmation letter, invoice, country specific information, travel checklist (what you need to bring), and final air / land itinerary. Your final trip payment will be due 90 days prior to your departure.

Make sure you are covered All clients are required to purchase a comprehensive travel insurance plan before trip departure. This should cover you for events such as tour operator bankruptcy / financial default, trip cancellation, delay or interruption, lost or delayed baggage, emergency accident, sickness and evacuation, 24 hour medical assistance, traveler’s assistance, and emergency cash transfer. For coverage we suggest Travel Guard insurance. The total premium will be based on your total land / air cost and your ages. If you provide our office with your credit card details we will purchase / complete the insurance formalities on your behalf.

Investigate the 10 Best African Countries for Safari below:

#1 Botswana

Recommended Tours:

Thus, poachers are seen as enemies of the people. As a result, Botswana has come into view as Africa's most sought-after ecotourism destination. Starting from the Chobe National Park to the Moremi Nature Reserve, you'll be able to witness numerous gems all around the country.

Back in 2014, Botswana widely banned the hunting of wild animals and implemented strict laws which are still in practice. The country resumes its zero-tolerance for poaching and their very own environmental minister, Tshekedi Khama, has even launched a shoot-to-kill policy for poachers.

Botswana, with its wildlife conservation and natural parks, is a haven for nature lovers. Most of the land in Namibia is occupied by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Along with that, the country also has 12 national parks and many other areas which are protected. So, if you go there for a safari, you'll have many rich areas to see and explore.

When it comes to countries with the least amount of population, Namibia is one of them. Which proves to be a good thing for nature. This is because most of the land in Namibia is still unspoiled by human filth or any sort of development, giving nature a chance to breathe.

In the country's Volcanoes National Park, you'll find 10 habituated gorilla families. Groups of 8 trekkers can visit them for one hour per day. But that's enough to get the best African safari experience. And as a nature lover, you'll enjoy the experience to the max.

If you've been around for some time, you'll be familiar with Rwanda's mountain gorillas. They were famously broadcasted and their fight for survival was shown on National Geographic . This was all thanks to the late Dian Fossey back in the 1970s who advocated for the rights of these mountain gorillas throughout her life.

Considering the tragic history surrounding the mass genocide of the people of Rwanda back in 1994, it's truly a blessing what the country has achieved in the past 25 years. There have been countless investments in infrastructure. This has resulted in the country being a very fast-growing destination for ecotourism.

#6 South Africa

But given all the advantages, it's safe to conclude that South Africa also suffers from over-tourism. I mean, if you have so many great attractions, people will flock towards it. Chances are that you'll find yourself in the middle of dozens of unruly visitors who are not too keen on obeying the rules. This occurs mostly during the peak seasons.

Annually, the country has one million visitors. Its biggest attraction is the Kruger National Park with its enrichment in biodiversity. Visitors there also have the liberty to self-drive, thus, getting a first-person private but superb experience.

For some time now, South Africa has been climbing the charts to become one of the most popular destinations for African safaris. Given its location, South Africa is a very convenient and cheap destination for people from the United States. Besides that, the country also boasts a well-developed infrastructure which makes it perfect for luxury travelers as well.

#7 Tanzania

One of the most popular locations would be the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The country is also a haven for 1100 different bird species. It's no wonder that Tanzania gets this much rep. Especially when the country boasts so many wonders.

We talked about Kenya being the top destination for Safari. Now Tanzania here takes second place in being the continent's most popular safari destination. And why shouldn't it? The country has 16 national parks and an extraordinary amount of wealth and wildlife wonders for the people to witness.

Some of its natural attractions include housing the highest mountain range in Africa. It also has the world's largest free-standing volcano and the second-largest freshwater lake. With its 30 national parks and other wildlife reserves, Uganda boasts many more sanctuaries which are worth the visit. Especially if you're a lover of nature and wildlife.

Often called "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda is certainly a great pick for an African safari. Its reputation as being one of the best ecotourism destinations comes from the country's natural attractions and wildlife.

Recommended Tours:

Out of its 20 national parks, the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is home to many wildlife animals such as African elephants, Angolan giraffes, Cape buffalo, etc. Other than that, there are many private ownerships of National parks, notably the Kasanka National Park which is near the basin of Lake Bangweulu. The fountains of Peterhof

#Attractions #Peterhof #Sightseeing #Parks

One of the main distinguishing features of the Peterhof fountains is the original arrangement of a conduit. Unlike Versailles, this grandiose construction works without pumps and other water-pressure facilities. Water is supplied from numerous natural and artificial ponds, nourished by underground sources and springs.

The Grand cascade

At first, Peter I had planned the ponds of the Upper garden to be the water source for the Grand cascade and its fountains, but soon the tireless ruler, who personally investigated the area, found additional sources of water, which situated in the neighborhood of the future Peterhof Park. The nature of the terrain enabled the creation of a system of conduits, in which the water flowed by gravity from dozens of ponds, located above the Lower Park and the Upper garden.

Thus, all 4 cascades, and 191 Peterhof fountains (including the Grand cascade water cannons) are fed by ponds of Ropshinsky hills (which are located at a distance of 24 kilometres), as well as English, Meadow, Olgin and other ponds (18 ponds overall) and many streams and sources. All of these sources combine into a complex system of sluices and canals with total length of 40 kilometers. The most surprising fact is that the system of water pipelines constructed by the order of Peter I and with his personal participation operates to this day.

“The most notable of all the Peterhof fountains is spectacular and majestic Grand cascade”

The most notable of all the Peterhof fountains is spectacular and majestic Grand cascade. This gilded splendor includes 255 sculptures, bas reliefs and other architectural structures, as well as 64 fountains with 138 water jets soaring skyward. The focus of the entire composition is the famous gilded “Samson tearing the lion’s mouth”, and in the center of the cascade there is a Lower grotto with a viewing point decorated with golden sculptures and marble bas-reliefs.

Another cascade fountain, named Checkerboard hill, looks like a bright spot on green background. 20-meter speed checker board with two mysterious caves that are guarded by three dragons is sometimes also called the Cascade of dragons. On both sides of the construction there are staircases, decorated with sculptures of white marble. At the beginning of the World War II, the sculptures had been removed and hidden, while the cascade itself was completely destroyed by the Nazis.

The “Favorite” fountain

Like many years ago, the moving fountains are extremely popular among the visitors of Peterhof Park. These include the “Favorite” fountain, created in 1725. It depicts quacking ducks floating in a circle, and a little dog that unsuccessfully tries to catch them. It is a good sign if you lucky enough to throw your coin right at the duck’s back and if the coin remains there. So despite its modest size, park staff daily extracts a lot more coins from the “Favoirte” than from any other Peterhof fountain.

Today Peterhof is the most popular of all the Petersburg suburbs. Its palaces and fountains impress the most sophisticated travelers. Each of Peterhof fountains is a jewel in its unique and luxurious collection. If you want to find yourself in a dreamland, come to Peterhof and take a walk in its enchanting parks among fabulous fountains.
