Japan Express: Osaka to Tokyo

We had a wonderful trip and LOVED the other travelers in our group! (We are just amazed and relieved that we managed to avoid the big typhoon that came through just two days after we left...). Our leader Fuji was great. We had difficulty understanding his accent--especially at first--but we grew to really appreciate his quirky sense of humor and amazing navigation skills! Aside from the language difficulty, our only critique of him was that he readily admitted he did not know very much about some of the temples and shrines that we visited, so we did not gain as deep of an understanding as we might have with a different guide. There were times when the itinerary felt a bit rushed, but we are so glad to have had so many amazing adventures along the way, and in hindsight I wouldn't have skipped anything. We were also in Hiroshima on the anniversary of the bombing, which made the visit a bit more crowded, but also more meaningful. I will highly recommend this trip to all of my friends!

Really enjoyed the fact that this was a very 'authentic' tour with traditional Ryokans and using the public transport used by the locals. Also loved that there was so much flexibility and I could opt to join the group or go off on my own. Really enjoyed it.

Stunning Japan with Shirakawa-go (private 3 star hotel rooms) Tour

Stunning Japan with Shirakawa-go (private 3 star hotel rooms)

The tour was good in : 1.coverage of many different cities in the 9 days 2. Visited many popular places of interest 3. Philip, our tour guide was nice but the driver, Uchimura-san was really topnotch. His driving was very smooth and very safe,. even when the roads were wet with snow. The tour was not so good in: 1. The Osaka Castle Hotel was abit rundown, and it was very noisy in the early morning. It sounded like someone was doing some construction work. The airconditioning was not working and it was warm. 2. The itinerary states that we would visit Arashiyama in Kyoto but we were asked to join and pay for a Kyoto tour. 3. In the Mt Fuji area, itinerary stated that we would go for a cruise on Lake Ashi but we were taken on a cruise on Lake Kawaguchi. 4. In Suwa, the Sun Route Inn had 2 blocks. I don't understand why we were put in the block where the bus can't access., and we had to lug our luggage across the road. 4. The hotel in Tokyo was situated in Ariake. While it is pretty new. Ariake is quite far to go to various places in Tokyo. Overall, I would give this tour a 4/5

What people love about fully guided tours in japan.

The guide was the best
It was a really nice tour, our Tour guide Aiko and bus driver: Isshiko san was very good to us for the whole duration. Though this was not our original tour, it was ok. I still would've liked to go on our 10-day one instead. This 8 day tour was way too jam-packed. Almost 3 cities a day with only 2 hours to explore in each. We had to choose whether to eat or to explore. Everybody I talked to had their original tour switched to this one. Though the staff did their very best, I can't help but think there was a better way to do this tour. This is a ver tiring tour though you get to see most of Japan in this one trip. For people wanting a more relaxed trip there are better options.
Japan was so fun! A looooooot of free time so do you researches about what to do and visit in every city. Would have love more ''organised'' activities (like a dinner every night with the group,...). Compared to other G Adventures tour I did in the past, I felt that this group was less stick together since there was only a few group activities.

Tour Packages

Tour packages are travel plans, which include some or all of the following: transportation , accommodation , meals, guided tours and more. They can be of great value to both, independent and group travelers.

Tour packages range from individual travel plans, which include only a train ticket and hotel reservation and leave everything else to the traveler, to fully guided tours which cover everything from airfare to English speaking guides and meals. Furthermore, there is a range of special interest tours, such as anime , hot spring , hiking or theme park tours.

Many companies inside and outside of Japan offer tour packages. Because the companies purchase tickets and hotel rooms in large bulks, they are able to offer the packages at costs far below the ones available to individual travelers, making tour packages an option worth considering by travelers of all budgets .

English-speaking Travel Agencies in Japan

Exploring new cultures and nations can easily pique one's interest, but without a guide who understands what you're looking for, planning what to do can be a nightmare, which is why we strongly advise working with one of Japan's many English-friendly travel agencies.

While travel companies have mostly fallen out of favor in the West, many Japanese people still rely on them to plan their trips. Because so many people are vying for a piece of the pie, you, the traveler, have a better chance of saving money and having the kind of holiday that only a cultural insider can provide.

Popular Locations to Visit in Japan

approved tour operators japan

Before you hire an agent, however, it’s good to have a basic idea of where you would like to go. Below are some of the most popular destinations to help you narrow down your travel plans.

You could easily spend your entire trip exploring Tokyo and still find yourself wanting to see more. It offers something for everyone from sports and entertainment, to art, culture, history, cuisine, and shopping. If you plan to make Tokyo a part of your itinerary, be sure to look through our many activity guides to see what’s possible around the city.

Kyoto was once the medieval capital of Japan. Much of the old city is still preserved, making it a top destination for Japanophiles hoping for a peek into the country’s feudal past. You can still fully immerse yourself in traditional Japanese culture by visiting a variety of shrines, temples, and shop-lined alleys.

Distance from Tokyo:135 minutes by bullet train

>> English Group / Private Tours in Kyoto

Nikko , located to the north of Tokyo, is home to the famous Toshogu shrine. This shrine was dedicated to the Tokugawa shogunate and is considered one of the most beautiful and ornate shrines in all of Japan. The surrounding forest includes an impressive set of waterfalls, as well as some wonderful onsen , or natural hot springs.

Distance from Tokyo: 140 minutes by limited express train

>> English Tours in Nikko

Kamakura is a leisurely day trip from Tokyo and full of shrines and castles. This area was the capital of Japan during the Kamakura period. It offers a great combination of historical sites and hiking opportunities. Go just a little farther out to the nearby island of Enoshima for a fun day at the beach — a spot so relaxing you won’t believe Shinjuku is less than two hours away.

Distance from Tokyo: 60 minutes by local train

>> English Tours in Kamakura

Mt. Fuji, Japan’s iconic volcano, is unmistakable. The official climbing season is from May to October. It’s recommended that you only attempt the ascent during this period. There are many official groups with which you can make the ascent, so only seasoned climbers should try to go up solo.

Popular Seasonal Activities in Japan

approved tour operators japan

There’s something for nearly every outdoor interest when it comes to touring Japan, but there are certain areas and activities that are particularly worth exploring depending on the season.

The most important event of spring is hanami , a fleeting week where all of the cherry blossoms bloom simultaneously in a blaze of soft pink. While it’s possible to guess which week will be blessed with the event each year, there are often changes in weather that result in the window changing, so we recommend casting your net wide for a longer stay to ensure that you get the chance to experience a picnic beneath a radiant canopy of flowers.

Summer is the typical season for international tourists, but be warned: major metropolises like Tokyo and Osaka get uncomfortably hot and humid. That being said, Japan has keeping cool down to an art form, and the most popular outdoor activities include summer festivals boasting music, singing, and drums that you will hear deep into the night.

There are also many opportunities to enjoy massive firework festivals throughout the season in Tokyo, Osaka, and other major cities. If your trip happens to line up with one of these events, be sure not to miss it.

The fall foliage is truly something to behold throughout Japan. The displays across the mountains rival any in the world. Especially against the backdrop of so many ancient temples and shrines, you can begin to understand why the Japanese hold nature sacred. With temperatures cooling, this is an ideal time to come to Japan.

Winter is perhaps the least popular of the seasons, unless you head north of Tokyo . Nagano and Niseko’s alpine slopes covered in powder snow are worth a visit at least once in your life if you’re an avid skier. After a full day’s activities, it’s common to find yourself sitting in front of a steaming communal hotpot or a bowl of intensely flavorful ramen. This is also a popular season to indulge in a hot spring vacation.

Arriving in Japan

The final question is where you will be flying into Japan: Haneda or Narita. Almost all international travel into Japan goes through these two major hubs, both located near Tokyo. While Narita is larger, it’s also further out of the way in Tokyo’s neighboring prefecture of Chiba. Haneda, on the other hand, is right in Tokyo.

Both airports have had significant facelifts in the last few years, and right now it’s not that difficult to travel into Tokyo from either one. If you would like more information, check out our full guides to traveling from Narita and Haneda into Tokyo

Japan Entry Guidelines

Japan is open.

Updated Feb 14th 2023

Japan is fully open for entry and its border control measures have largely returned to pre-pandemic policies. In other words, just like it was before March 2020, passport holders from the UK , the majority of Europe , the USA , Canada , Australia , and New Zealand can take advantage of Japan’s 90-day visa-free short-term visit arrangements.

There was no need for arrival-day self-isolation or testing for travelers from these 98 countries or regions that is deemed to be low risk. There are no requirements to download tracing apps.

Check here for official up to date border measures/entry requirements.

What are the requirements for visiting Japan, and how do visas work?

From October 11th, 2022, visitors from the majority of nations can enter Japan without a visa. Tourists only need to meet the following requirements to enter Japan:

* Return a negative PCR test within 72 hours of departure, OR provide a valid Covid-19 certificate proving they have received at least three doses of the required vaccines (the certificate must be uploaded onto Visit Japan Web).

* Preregistration on Visit Japan Web is optional but highly advised to upload PCR/Vaccine-related and arrival information for fast-track entry into Japan. Having travel insurance that covers sickness-related medical costs and disruptions is optional but advised.

* Regardless of immunization status, passengers arriving on direct flights from China (including Macau but excluding Hong Kong) must submit a negative PCR test within 72 hours of departure. Similar to this, everyone entering Japan who has visited China (including Macau but excluding Hong Kong) during the last seven days will be required to take a mandatory Covid-19 test. If the test is positive, they will have to stay in a designated facility for quarantine.

Visit the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) website for more details about entering Japan.

Are Vaccinations Necessary to Enter Japan?

There is no requirement to be vaccinated to enter Japan. However, if you are triple vaccinated, you will not need to do a pre-departure Covid test. Children (under the age of 18) do not need to have vaccination certificates and nor will they need have negative Covid test results if they are travelling with parents or guardians who have been vaccinated and have vaccination certificates.

What covid prevention measures are still in place in Japan?

The government currently recommends that masks be worn indoors to prevent coronavirus infections but it plans to suggest that people make their own decisions when it recategorizes the coronavirus into the same group as seasonal influenza on May 8.

It is expected that wearing masks on trains and other public transport will return to being a personal choice from March 13th , though many Japanese people will likely continue to wear masks in crowded areas regardless of the government recommendations.

The best time to visit Japan depends on your preferences. You would rather see cherry blossoms in spring (March to May), experience colorful foliage in autumn (September to November), enjoy warm weather in summer (June to August), or explore a winter wonderland in December to February.

A good trip to Japan usually lasts around 10 to 14 days. This duration allows you to explore major cities like Tokyo and Kyoto, experience traditional culture, visit historical sites, and enjoy the scenic beauty.

Japan is not limited to guided tours; independent travel is common and accessible. The country has an efficient public transportation system, including trains and buses. English signage is prevalent in tourist areas, and many locals in urban areas understand basic English.

The cost of a Japan tour can vary widely based on factors like accommodation, transportation, activities, and dining preferences. On average, a mid-range budget for a 10-day trip might range from $3,000 to $5,000 per person.

Japan is reopening for tour groups: What you need to know now

Bill Fink

Japan has been one of the world's last COVID-19 travel ban holdouts — it has been closed to all tourists since 2020. However, after launching a series of very restrictive "test tours" last month, the country is finally cracking open. On June 10, it will begin its latest reopening phase, which will allow foreign visitors to enter Japan on group tours (and only group tours) and travel throughout the country.

Here's what you need to know about the latest rules to visit Japan, how tour companies are reacting to the announcement and what you might expect when you get there.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

The latest rules for tourism travel to Japan

approved tour operators japan

The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs updated travel entry requirements on its website on June 7, and TPG confirmed further information via the Japan Embassy in the U.S. as well as the Japan National Tourism Organization. Here are the basics:

  • Americans must obtain a visa to travel to Japan.
  • Tourists must be part of a group tour led by an officially certified agency.
  • For tourism, "visa applications should be submitted through accredited travel agencies."
  • Visas are valid only for a three-month period (so don't apply too early).
  • Required documents to get a visa (to be collected by the tour company) include proof of vaccination and medical insurance.
  • Visitors must submit proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of departure.
  • Visitors must sign a written "pledge" saying they will comply with all health regulations (including mask-wearing) under potential penalty of detention or deportation.
  • Visitors must download a health and tracking app to their smartphone for use during their trip.
  • Unlike the previous "test tours," current tours are allowed to travel anywhere in Japan.

Further information can be found on the latest entry requirement document supplied by the Consulate-General of Japan in Los Angeles, with a useful FAQ link.

What tour companies recommend for Japan travel

approved tour operators japan

Given the long list of requirements for and restrictions on travel to Japan, the reaction from both tour operators and potential tourists has been mixed. While there's excitement about Japan reopening, there's some trepidation about how enjoyable, or even how feasible, these trips may be, given the onerous regulations.

"Interest has been huge," said Kathie Callum, director of sales for the Kyoto-based Oku Japan tour company, which specializes in off-the-beaten-track tours. She told TPG she is "thrilled that there is greater clarity on guidelines for operating tours after so many months of waiting," and that people "have been emailing and calling right away — even before the ink was dry on the operating requirements."

"We have many guests who have been chomping at the bit to travel to Japan," said Becky Youman, director of communications for TCS World Travel, a company offering high-end customized tours. "Some of them have been waiting for a couple of years," Youman continued. "They are so excited to see that Japan is opening." Kay Allen, communications manager for Japan National Tourism's Los Angeles office, shared that "JNTO has been experiencing a high influx of inquiries from prospective U.S. tourists interested in planning their trip to Japan."

Is now the right time to book your Japan tour?

Matt Berna, president of Intrepid Travel, North America, doesn't think so.

"Unfortunately, on review of these guidelines, conditions are currently too restrictive for us to operate Intrepid trips," he shared in a statement with TPG. "We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will advise customers on departures in the second half of July in the weeks ahead."

Oku Japan's Callum said it's still in the tour-planning process as there was only a "short span of time to pore over all the details and ask the follow-up questions to make sure we are meeting all the necessary requirements [from the Japanese government]." The company is developing some "special small-group guided summer departures for July and August that will fully meet the current requirements." However, Oku's fall tours are currently open for booking.

At TCS, Youman said the company is "in the midst of planning trips now for departure later this year." Adventure travel company MT Sobek previously shared with TPG that its regular fall tours are open for booking, as the company is "pretty confident" things will be close to "normal" by then.

Some outlets have reported that the tourists will require 100% supervision from arrival to departure, but others say travelers will still have the free time to explore on their own. The draconian-sounding threats of detention or deportation for those not wearing masks or following other rules seem to be reserved for only the worst-case scenarios. Still, nobody can say for sure.

"The information that the government is putting out [related to tourism rules] is incomprehensible, whether in English or Japanese," one frustrated local tour operator shared with TPG. "None of it has any binding force," he said, regarding mask-wearing and group supervision requirements. "When foreigners start arriving, none of it will be enforced. Since I'll be leading tours and I don't wear a mask myself, how am I supposed to force my customers to wear masks?"

Tourists shouldn't expect to be followed around by police trying to enforce these rules. "Tour guides are responsible for making sure that the travelers in their tour groups are traveling safely and respectfully," JNTO's Allen said. "It's mostly a matter of acting with respect," Oku Japan founder Matt Malcomson told TPG. "At the moment everyone [in Japan] wears masks everywhere — and there is no legal mandate to do so. It's just peer pressure really. As long as the tour clients abide by the spirit of that there won't be any issues." The fine print of the tourism regulations does specifically mention that mask-wearing is not required in most outdoor situations, and that visitors have some degree of leeway in separating from their tour groups.

In busy international Japanese cities like Tokyo and Osaka — where it's already common to see foreigners who are there as residents or on work visas — you can expect the atmosphere to feel like it did pre-pandemic, albeit with increased masks and hand sanitizers. "To be honest, I didn't notice any difference in Tokyo [from before the pandemic]. Almost every bar and restaurant was overflowing with people and there were plenty of foreigners around too," journalist Jamie Lafferty told TPG after his trip to Japan a few weeks ago. Once you travel to more remote destinations in Japan, there may be some degree of hesitation among locals when it comes to interaction. There might also be a stricter adherence to group travel guidelines.

Bottom line

Japan is officially open for tourism again, although only for visitors coming on group tours with accredited companies. Tour operators are seeing a boom in demand and interest for travel to Japan, and they expect many tours to be booked up in the near future. Because of the potentially restrictive requirements and the uncertainty of getting a true travel experience, cautious or more independent travelers might want to wait until fall when things might be operating closer to "normal" again in Japan. However, for eager travelers willing to follow some extra rules, now may be the time to book that long-delayed Japan journey.
