Everything to Know About Alcohol & Drinks on a Cruise (Costs, Rules, & More)

For many people, it’s not a cruise unless they are enjoying themselves with a drink in their hand. After all, what’s more relaxing than hanging out poolside with a cold beer or tasty cocktail?

Mojito on a cruise

Of course, cruise lines are happy to help. Bars are everywhere on a cruise ship, and the alcohol flows freely. But it’s certainly not free. Drinks are big business on a cruise.

So how much will you pay for a drink? What sort of beverages are available? Who can buy a beer or cocktail? These are just a few questions you might have about enjoying alcohol on a cruise. We answer them all (plus roughly a dozen more) for you below.

In This Article...

How much does beer cost on a cruise?

Looking for a brew? Cruise ships will have tons of options, including some like Carnival that even brew their own beer to sell. But if it’s a large, nationally known beer, it’s likely to be on the ship… along with some other options like local beers. Norwegian Cruise Line even has some ships with dozens of beers on tap.

In general, expect prices to be in the $7-9 range, before gratuity. With gratuity, expect to spend about $8-10.50 per beer.

As an example, below is a list of prices and beers from a recent Royal Caribbean cruise. Keep in mind these prices are before gratuity is added on.

  • Amstel Light $7.49
  • Blue Moon $7.49
  • Bud Light $7.49
  • Budweiser $7.49
  • Coors Light $7.49
  • Corona $7.49
  • Dos Equis $7.49
  • Daura Damm $7.49
  • Heineken $7.49
  • Michelob Ultra $7.49
  • Miller Light $7.49
  • Paulaner Weiss $7.49
  • Stella Artois $7.49
  • Red Stripe (473 ml) $7.99
  • Foster’s Oil Can (750 ml) $9.50

Other cruise lines might have prices that are slightly higher or lower but this is a good ballpark. As well, options will vary by cruise line and even from bar to bar on some ships.

How much do cocktails cost on the ship?

Hurricane fish bowl

Perhaps nothing is as iconic on a cruise ship as sipping a delicious cocktail with an umbrella in it. And cruise lines are happy to oblige. Not only can you get classics like Rum Runners, Margaritas, and Mai Tais, but cruise lines are constantly introducing unique cocktails that you won’t find anywhere else.

In other words, even if you aren’t a big cocktail drinker, there’s likely to be something that you’ll want to sip.

The downside? You definitely have to pay for it. Prices for cocktails on cruise ships usually run about $10-14 per drink, before gratuity . So expect to spend about $12 to $16.50 per beverage when gratuity is added.

Here is a sample menu from a recent Carnival cruise to give you an idea of what’s offered. Just like different restaurants, different bars on the ship will have different drink options:

What should I know about drink packages?

As you can see, the price of alcohol on the ship can be expensive. If you’re looking to save money, the cruise line offer drink packages. These packages offer up all you want for one price. So, for example, a cruise line like Carnival will charge about $55 per day for a package, and for that amount you can simply grab a drink when you’re ready.

Drink packages can be a considerable cost, but make the budgeting much easier.

Before you buy a package, however, there are lots of things to know. For example, if one adult in the cabin buys the package, then all adults normally have to purchase it as well. And if you purchase, you have to buy the package for every day of the cruise.

For a full breakdown, read our guide to cruise line drink packages here .

Is gratuity included on drinks?

Royal Caribbean Bionic Bar

If you have a drink package, then you don’t have to worry about gratuity being added when you get something from a bar. The gratuity is instead added onto the daily cost of the package. So a $70 per day drink package will have an 18-20% gratuity charge (the amount varies by cruise line) and actually costs you closer to $85 per day. But when you get a drink, you won’t see any additional charges, for the drink or gratuity.

However, if purchasing a drink without the package, then you will be charged an additional gratuity on the menu price . As just mentioned, this amount varies by cruise line but is normally 18-20%.

So a $10 drink on the menu will actually end up being about $12. An $8 beer would be closer to $10.

One thing to know is that while this gratuity is charged automatically, when you sign the receipt you’ll see a line for an additional tip. You aren’t required or expected to add more unless you want to do so.

What’s the drinking age on a cruise ship?

With cruise ships there are some unique situations that you don’t find with other vacations. For instance, while docked in a country, the ship is bound to the laws of that nation. But when outside their waters, they are not. And then, a ship might visit three or four different countries with different laws during the same cruise.

To keep things simple, ships sailing from the United States have a drinking age of 21 years old . Ships sailing from points in Europe, Asia, and Australia typically have a drinking age of 18 years old.

But local laws in places your ship will visit might have different drinking ages. In some cases, it may be legal for someone to drink in port, but not allowed on the cruise ship. For instance, Mexico and The Bahamas have an 18 year drinking age, but ships departing the United States have a 21 year age minimum.

For more on cruises and drinking ages, you can see our article here .

How do I buy drinks on the ship?

are cruise ship bars open when in port

Put that wallet away. To buy drinks on the ship you don’t need cash or a credit card. In most cases you simply hand over your room keycard, which acts as a charge card for your onboard account. (Sometimes you simply give your room number and the staff charges your account that way.)

Once charged, you’ll be presented a receipt to sign for your drink.

Have a drink package? Don’t worry, the bar staff will know when your card is swiped that you have the package. You won’t be charged for the beverage.

Is there a limit to how much I can drink?

There are no set limits on how much you can drink. One exception is that Carnival does limit those with drink packages to 15 alcoholic beverages per day. (It’s not clear if that limit applies to those without the package.)

Still, for the most part you aren’t under any clearly defined limit. That said, don’t expect to continue to be served if you are showing signs of dangerous levels of intoxication. The cruise lines want you to relax, enjoy yourself, and have a good time, but not at the expense of your health or the well-being of other passengers.

What brands of alcohol are available?

There is seemingly an endless number of options when it comes to alcohol brands on a cruise ship. In fact, there are bound to be brands you’ve never tasted or even heard of before, in addition to well-known names.

So will your favorite brand of beer, wine, or liquor be served? That depends.

If your favorite is a popular brand with national presence, then you can expect it to be on the ship. If it’s a lesser-known or regional brand, then the chances are much lower.

For instance, if you’re from Texas then Shiner Bock is a well-known beer brand and served just about anywhere in the state… but not nationally. We have yet to see the brand on a cruise ship unless sailing from Texas.

Major brands of alcohol like Tito’s, Jack Daniel’s, Crown Royal, Maker’s Mark are all widely available. In addition, you will definitely find some lesser-known options as well, but not all.

What time do the bars open and close?

“Cruise time” is a little different from regular time. So if you’re wanting a drink in the morning, that’s no issue. Individual bar schedules will vary, but apart from very late night/early morning (e.g. 3-8 a.m.) you should be able to find somewhere serving, though it may only be one or two spots.

For instance, below is the bar schedule for MSC during a recent cruise:

are cruise ship bars open when in port

Can I take my drink anywhere around the ship?

Yes. At first it can seem a little weird walking from a restaurant to the casino to the pool all while carrying a drink in your hand. For those of us used to laws surrounding public display of open containers, it feels unnatural. On a cruise ship, it’s completely ok and commonplace.

Drinks can be taken with you anywhere around the ship. So grab a drink and head to a show, dinner, the pool, casino, or just back to the cabin.

Can I order two drinks/doubles?

Sure, although some lines have rules if you have the drink package. If you don’t have the package, then it’s not a big deal to order multiple drinks at once. In fact, cruise lines often have beer buckets that you can purchase that have 4-6 beers.

Want a drink for you and a friend? Want a double? Just order it, it’s no issue at all.

If you have the drink package, however, then things get a little more complicated. Since these packages are for individuals and not meant to be shared, there are rules that limit the ability to order multiple drinks. For example, Carnival’s package doesn’t allow double shots and you can only purchase one drink at a time, with a five-minute waiting period between drinks.

Is There a Mini-Bar in the Cabin?

Often, but not always. Every cabin will have a small refrigerator, which often doubles as a mini-bar with a number of beers, liquors, sodas, and waters. (We have been on cruises where the refrigerator is empty.)

Want something to drink? Help yourself, but just know you’ll be charged. The menu prices are typically posted on the fridge or nearby. Even if you have a drink package, mini-bar items are excluded.

Can I bring alcohol onboard?

You can’t bring most alcohol onto the ship for drinking during your cruise. So if you wanted to bring a bottle of rum or a 12-pack of beer from home to enjoy while sailing, that’s not allowed. Cruise lines expect you to purchase their bar offerings. They do, however allow you to bring on a bottle of wine or champagne.

If you are in port and find a bottle of something that you want, then you can also buy it and bring it home with you. So if you visit Mexico and pick up a bottle of tequila, you can bring it back with you as you board the ship.

The difference? When you return to the ship the bottle will be taken from you and placed in storage. It will then be returned to you the last night of the cruise to take home. So don’t think you’re going to be able to enjoy it while sailing.

One other thing to note is that some lines — including Carnival and Royal Caribbean — do allow you to bring on some non-alcoholic beverages like sodas and waters. You can find more details here .

Can I buy duty-free alcohol on the ship to mix drinks?

Duty free bottles

Step on a cruise ship (or head out into port), and you’ll see lots of opportunity for duty-free shopping. Cigarettes and alcohol are the big sellers, and the prices are good for what’s offered.

You might have the idea to bring on mixers and then buy a bottle from the duty-free shop to enjoy on your cruise. Unfortunately, that’s not allowed.

When buying from a duty-free shop, your bottles will be packaged and then stored by the staff until the last day of your cruise. They will then be delivered to your cabin on the last night to take with you as you get off the ship.

What happens if I sneak alcohol onto a cruise?

Given the price of drinks on the ship, you wouldn’t be alone in wondering about sneaking drinks on with you in your luggage as you board.

It’s relatively common that people try this trick. In fact, when boarding you’ll likely find several people having bottles of liquid being closely examined by the security staff during boarding.

In other words, security is on the lookout for smuggled booze. If found, expect it to be removed and likely destroyed. If put it in your checked luggage, you might be called down to retrieve your bag.

The terms and conditions of sailing may give the cruise line the right to not allow you to board if found trying to sneak on alcohol, however, we’ve personally never heard of that happening.

Still, it could lead to some awkward conversations — and losing your alcohol — should you be caught trying to sneak it onto the ship.

How can I save money on drinks?

There’s no question that it can be expensive to drink on a cruise ship. But there are ways that you can drink for less money. Here are a few tips:

Drink in port instead: Ports of call offer a chance to save money on drinks. Many areas near where the ship docks will have cheap(er) drink specials designed to attract the business of cruise passengers. By heading off the ship you can save money versus drinking on the ship.

Look for sales: If you do plan to drink on the ship, be sure to keep an eye out for drink specials. They will often be mentioned in the daily planner that’s delivered to your room each night. Maybe it’s a happy hour at a certain bar or certain drinks that have a discount.

Do the math on drink packages: If you’re a big drinker, then drink packages can save you tons. These packages are also expensive, so if you don’t get your money’s worth, then you could end up spending more than you would otherwise. To help you do the math before buying, check out our drink package calculator here .

11 Best Reasons to Stay on the Cruise Ship When in Port

11 Best Reasons to Stay on the Ship While in Port

Sharing is caring!

Have you ever thought of staying on your cruise ship when in port? Many cruisers wonder if they should do this, or even if it’s allowed.

Experienced cruisers know that there are a few great reasons to occasionally stay on board, and not get off the cruise ship in some ports of call.

Can You Stay On the Cruise Ship in Port?

You can stay on the cruise ship when in port. In fact, it’s a pro cruiser “secret” to let others get off the cruise ship, while they enjoy a quiet and less crowded day onboard! When staying on board the cruise, you can relax and enjoy the cruise ship amenities and activities. It’s also a great day to sleep in or take advantage of spa and salon promotions that often happen on port days..

Reasons to Stay on a Cruise Ship in a Port of Call

Staying onboard your cruise ship while in port means a quiet pool

1. Relax and Recharge

Traveling by cruise ship is amazing .  You get to see many destinations and experience a taste of different ports of call. However cruising also about relaxing and recharging.

If you’ve had a busy cruise going to all the shows and waking up early for excursions, you may need a true vacation day. Consider staying on the ship while in port so that you can sleep in and have a leisurely day. Eat breakfast late and enjoy a slower pace, read a book or check out the onboard activities in a much quieter environment.

2. Waterslides, Ziplines & Race Cars

Cruise ship zipline Oasis of the Seas

Some ships are truly destinations all their own. If you’re on a big resort style cruise ship, you simply won’t be able to try out all the amazing activities on a 7 day cruise.

On regular sea days, you can expect big line ups for all the best and most popular attractions. Every activity from water-slides, to surfing pools, to race cars will be busy.

The nice thing about staying on board when the ship is docked in port, is that most people won’t do this. You will have the run of the ship, which is especially useful on some of the incredible family style cruise ships from Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line.

3. Repeat Cruise Ports

If you’ve been to a cruise port before, don’t feel bad about not getting off the ship one time. Unless you really love a destination, once you’ve seen it a couple times, you may be better off enjoying all the amenities on your cruise ship.

4. Spa Specials

Did you know that cruise ships offer discounts and special promotions at the spa, as well as in other venues on port days. This is because they’re much less busy as most cruise passengers will be off the ship.

To entice you to book a couples massage or other service, you’ll have some amazing offers. Check into this on embarkation day, as often there may be an extra bonus for signing up early.

Keep in mind that the spa offers many services including massages, acupuncture and even teeth whitening. You may even want to visit the hair salon and treat yourself to a good blowout for the evening.

5. Check out the Onboard Activities and Restaurants

While onboard activities do slow down on port days, versus sea days, there are still many things to do on board. You can join trivia, dance classes and interesting seminars.

If you like cruise food, check out some of the dining options you haven’t tried yet. These can be casual places that are included but oh-so-good, or specialty restaurants that offer lunch specials on port days.

7. Take Photos and Videos

If you’re an avid cruiser and want to get some picture perfect shots, staying on the ship on a port day is the way to do it!

9. Save Money for Excursions

Cruising is a great value, and a lot is included. However one of the cruise extras to plan for are shore excursions.

One way to manage your cruise budget, is to save money by staying on the ship on some port days, while splurging on favorite excursions on other days.

10. Port Intensive Itineraries

If you have a port intensive itinerary, usually any cruise with more port days than sea days, you will be exhausted at some point. You may want to plan in advance to stay on the ship at least once to recoup your energy.

The worst feeling is ending a vacation feeling like you need another vacation. So keep this in mind and consider if staying onboard the ship is a good idea for you.

11. No Line Ups

Did I say no line ups? I may have saved the best for last.

It’s such a pleasure to not have line ups at guest service, in the buffet and for the ship activities. Even the elevators aren’t crowded!

I love cruising, but will admit that I’m not a fan of some of the crowded areas on cruise ships. Staying on the ship while in port, at least once in a while, is a pleasure!

Staying on a Cruise Ship in Port: Here’s When You Can and Why You Would

If you are considering taking a cruise, you may be wondering if you have to get off the ship during your cruise.

Many people like the idea of using a cruise ship as an All-inclusive resort, enjoying the facilities onboard while not actually getting off in any of the ports.

Do You Have to Get Off The Ship on a Cruise?

Guests taking a cruise, do not have to get off the cruise ship at any point if they don’t want to.

If a passenger wants to stay on the cruise ship for the entire cruise, there is no reason why they can’t.

Many guests enjoy staying on the ship for a variety of reasons.

There are a number of reasons why a passenger may wish to stay on the cruise ship, even when the cruise ship is docked in port and there are a number of benefits to doing so.

Why Would A Guest Stay Onboard The Ship When in Port?

They’ve visited the port before.

If you have visited a port before you may wish to stay on board and instead enjoy the facilities of the cruise ship.

I have done this in the past and would strongly recommend everybody to try a stay onboard day at least once.

The Port is Industrial

I’ve taken cruises that visit Le Havre in France many times.

Le Havre cruise port is known as the “Gateway to Paris”. There isn’t a lot to see in Le Harve at all, most people travel through it to reach other destinations.

Many industrial or container ports are advertised as “gateways” to other destinations.

The distance between Le Havre and Paris is over 100 miles, and the transfer into Paris usually takes around two ad a half hours.

I am not interested in making that journey – it would be quicker for me to get the Eurostar train from London to Paris than to get on a coach trip from Le Harve to Paris!

I often stay on the ship in Le Harve and enjoyed the facilities onboard.

Once I was cruising on Royal Caribbean’s “Independence of the Seas” and used the Le Havre day to try the Flow Rider.

Below is my first, and only attempt!

No Interest in Visiting The Port

Not everybody picks a particular cruise because they want to visit ever ports.

They may have picked a particular cruise because they like the ship or the cruise line.

They may just not be interested in visiting a particular place on the itinerary.

Chance to Really Relax

If you take a cruise which is port-intensive, it can be very tiring and feel very busy.

Staying on the cruise ship during a port day can give you the perfect opportunity to relax, slow down, and enjoy things at your own pace.

A lot of cruise itineraries have a different port every single day – some have two per day !

I recently took a cruise in Greece where we visited two ports per day. This is not common for cruise ships.

It was amazing, but it was very, very tiring. Sometimes it can be nice just to stay on the ship in order to unwind.

To learn more about the very busy cruise that I took with Celestyal Cruises, around the Greek Islands, check out this post:

What Are The Benefits of Staying on a Cruise Ship During a Port Day?

Guests can enjoy a quieter ship.

There are a number of benefits to staying onboard a cruise ship on a port day.

Many cruisers enjoy sea days where the ship doesn’t dock and I do too. That said, on sea days, cruise ships can be quite busy.

are cruise ship bars open when in port

Sometimes it will be difficult to get a seat by the pool or in the bar that you want to sit in. Entertainment venues can fill up fast too.

This can be more noticeable if you’re travelling in a location where the weather is bad and all of the passengers are inside the cruise ship , not out on the top decks.

Create Your Own Sea Day

One of the best things about staying on a cruise ship during a port day is that you basically make yourself a sea day but without all of the other passengers.

The ship is considerably less busy than it would be on a sea day.

It is so much easier to get a seat by the pool. You can find space in any bar or restaurant and entertainment is still happening onboard.

There is usually less entertainment because it is assumed that the majority of guests will be in port, but there are still things going on around the ship.

Enjoying the Celebrity Edge Buffet

There Are Usually Port Day Discounts

Another benefit is that you’ll often find discounts on things like Spa Treatments on port days.

If you are interested in something like a Spa Treatment, keep an eye on the daily schedule, or the cruise ship’s App.

To find out why you don’t need to pay for Wi-Fi to use the cruise ship’s App, check out the post below:

You Don’t Need to Pay For Wi-Fi To Use a Cruise Line App – Here’s Why

This will tell you if there are any port day discounts or discounts of any kind to take advantage of.

The discounts are usually offered on port days because port day treatments are generally less in demand.

Most people who do want to have a Spa Treatment will want to do it on a sea day, because they most likely to be off of the ship on the port days.

You can often save up to a third – or you get additional freebies and bundles if you book Spa Treatments on a port day.

Guests Can Minimise Their Spending by Staying Onboard

Another benefit of staying on a cruise ship during a port day is that you are able to save a lot of money.

You’ve already paid for the food that is on the cruise ship, so staying on during the port day means that you can eat the food that you’ve already paid for.

You’re also avoiding costs like transportation, entry fees to attractions, and general shopping on land.

On the other hand, you may spend more money on drinks than you would on land, but this does depend on your cruising habits and whether you have brought a “drinks package.”

Exceptions To The Rule – When You Must Get Off The Ship

There are of course exceptions to every rule.

If you were cruising somewhere where immigration needs to physically see every person on the cruise ship, you may have to disembark just to go through immigration and then re-embark.

Immigration in Japan Is quiet different, everyone must be personally seen by immigration. Even if you are somebody who wanted to just stay onboard, you must get off the ship for immigration purposes.

Nobody is allowed back on the ship until everybody has been through immigration.

I nearly had a total disaster at Immigration in Japan! To find out more about that cruise and what happened, watch this video next:

This is a very rare exception to the rule and it doesn’t usually happen on cruises.

I have never had this happen to me in the Caribbean or the Mediterranean, it’s quite rare.

It is much more likely in these situations that the cruise line will hold your passport and complete immigration checks for you.

To learn more about why this would happen, check out this post next:

Schedule of Cruise Ships Visiting Bar Harbor

Bar Harbor cruise port is a popular destination for cruise ships visiting the northeastern coast of the United States. The picturesque town, surrounded by Acadia National Park, offers stunning views and a variety of activities for visitors. If you’re planning a trip to Bar Harbor, it’s important to know the schedule of cruise ships visiting the port.

The schedule of cruise ships visiting Bar Harbor varies throughout the year, with peak season typically running from May to October. During this time, visitors can expect to see several cruise ships docked at the port each week. In 2021, over 150 cruise ships are expected to visit Bar Harbor, bringing in thousands of tourists to the area.

Some of the major cruise lines that visit Bar Harbor include Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Holland America Line. These companies offer a range of itineraries that include stops at other ports along the eastern seaboard. Visitors can check the schedule of cruise ships visiting Bar Harbor on the port’s website or through their travel agent to plan their trip accordingly.

When planning your visit to Bar Harbor during peak season, keep in mind that some days may be busier than others depending on how many ships are in port. It’s also important to note that while many shops and restaurants stay open late during peak season to accommodate tourists arriving by ship, some businesses may have different hours or close altogether on days when no cruises are scheduled.

If you’re interested in taking a cruise that includes a stop in Bar Harbor but don’t want to deal with crowds or limited business hours during peak season, consider booking a trip during shoulder season (April or November) or off-season (December-March). While fewer cruises may be scheduled during these times, you’ll still be able to enjoy all that Bar Harbor has to offer without as many tourists around.

Here's when you need (and don't need) a passport to cruise.

It's the type of sailing – closed-loop or open-loop – that largely determines whether or not you need a passport to cruise.

Do You Need a Passport for a Cruise?

Passports on a map showing cruise lanes.

Getty Images

A passport isn't always required for cruising.

To determine whether or not you need a passport to cruise, you first need to figure out if the itinerary is closed-loop or open-loop (also known as open-jaw).

Closed-loop cruise: A closed-loop cruise typically doesn't require a passport since it begins and ends in the same U.S. port (though there are some exceptions to this rule).

Example: Royal Caribbean International 's seven-night Western Caribbean & Perfect Day cruise stops in several countries – the Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti and Grand Cayman – but the itinerary is considered closed-loop because it starts and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Open-loop cruise: An open-loop cruise begins in one U.S. port and ends in a different U.S. port.

Example: Carnival Cruise Line 's 16-day Panama Canal from Seattle itinerary is not considered closed-loop because it departs from Seattle and completes its journey in New Orleans.

All of the above regulations have been determined by the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative: a plan by the departments of State and Homeland Security that determines which documents are acceptable for proving identity and citizenship when entering the United States.

Where to cruise without a passport

There are several destinations where you can cruise without a passport on a closed-loop sailing. They include the following:

  • The Bahamas

When looking at cruises to these locations, be mindful of the home ports. The Bahamas, Mexico, Bermuda, the Caribbean and Canada are all foreign ports, which means they only qualify for the passport exception if they are a stop along your cruise itinerary . If the cruise originates in any of these countries, it is likely you will need a passport.

Since Alaska, Hawaii and New England are all U.S. destinations, any closed-loop routes departing from these locations will not require a passport. However, keep in mind that it can be hard to find closed-loop cruises originating in Hawaii or Alaska.

To find closed-loop itineraries for a Hawaiian voyage or Alaskan cruise , try searching for sailings departing from major cities on the West Coast, like Seattle or Los Angeles . By contrast, quite a few closed-loop cruises leave from New England ports, but they are often marketed as Canadian cruises.

When you need a passport for closed-loop cruises

Some cruise itineraries include foreign ports that require a passport for disembarkation. This is most commonly an issue for travelers on a closed-loop Caribbean cruise. Barbados , Guadeloupe , Haiti, Martinique , St. Barts , and Trinidad and Tobago all require U.S. citizens to present a valid passport to disembark and enter the country, despite WHTI regulations not requiring a passport for these destinations. Labadee, Royal Caribbean's private island , is an exception and does not require a passport despite its location in Haiti.

If your itinerary includes a country requiring a U.S. passport, your cruise line will require you to have the passport at check-in. Note that your passport must not expire within six months of your arrival in a foreign country or else it won't be considered valid for international travel.

Read: The Easiest Way to Renew Your Passport

Acceptable forms of ID

All travelers – U.S. citizens and foreign nationals alike – must present documents that show identity and citizenship when entering the United States. A U.S. passport can show both. If you don't have one or don't want to bring one, be aware that you may need to present more than one document.

U.S. citizens 16 and older

If you're a U.S. citizen age 16 or older sailing on a closed-loop cruise without your passport, you will need a government-issued photo ID like a driver's license. In addition, you must present a document that proves your U.S. citizenship. These include:

  • Passport card
  • State-issued enhanced driver's license (EDL)
  • Government-issued birth certificate
  • Trusted Traveler Program card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST)
  • American Indian Card (Form I-872) or Enhanced Tribal ID Card

The Trusted Traveler Programs are risk-based programs to facilitate the entry of travelers who have been vetted and preapproved. Most of these programs will provide you with a machine-readable card that allows you to pass through border checkpoints quickly. Keep in mind, some of these IDs are only available to travelers 16 and older.

Read: TSA Precheck vs. Global Entry

U.S. citizens younger than 16

U.S. citizens younger than 16 are only required to present proof of citizenship, such as one of the following documents:

  • Original, notarized or certified copy of their government-issued birth certificate
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by U.S. Department of State
  • Certificate of Naturalization issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

Read: How to Get a Passport for Kids

Non-U.S. citizens

If you are a lawful permanent resident (or LPR) of the United States, you are required to present a permanent resident card or other valid evidence of permanent residence status.

Non-U.S. citizens, with the exception of Canadians and Mexicans, are not subject to passport exceptions, so a valid passport will need to be provided. Canadian citizens can present a valid passport, Enhanced Driver's License or Trusted Traveler Program card. Mexican citizens must present a passport with a visa or a Border Crossing Card.

Unacceptable forms of ID

While most common forms of identification are accepted, there are a few exceptions. U.S. military identification cards and U.S. Merchant Mariner documents are valid forms of identification, but only when traveling on official orders or in conjunction with official maritime business, so it is unlikely they will be accepted when traveling on a cruise.

Here are some other documents that will not be accepted as proof of citizenship:

  • Voter registration cards
  • Social Security cards
  • Baptismal papers
  • Hospital certificates of birth (for anyone older than a newborn)

It is important to note that many of the permitted forms of identification, such as a passport card or EDL, are only accepted at land and sea border crossings. Unforeseen circumstances, such as a medical air evacuation, may cause you to return to the U.S. by air travel. In this case, these documents won't be accepted when you try to reenter at the border crossing.

To avoid extra delays in your return to the U.S. following unforeseen travel complications, the Department of State recommends that everyone taking a cruise from the United States carry a valid passport book in case of emergency.

Are there any Caribbean ports where a ship's casino stays open?

Are there any Caribbean ports where a ship's casino will stay open?  We are sailing on the RCL's Freedom 12/1/19 and have 2 days where we are docked from 8AM to 8-9PM and are wondering if the casino will be open at all.  The two ports are Aruba and Curacao.

Cool Cruiser

Just off Navigator, and we were in Curacao until 11 pm. The casino opened prior to departure - I believe at 8 pm. We were in Aruba until 6 pm, and the casino opened around 6:30.

We will be going to Bermuda in Sept.  We will be there for two days, will the casino be closed both days?

We were on Rhapsody out of Tampa on 1/26/19 cruise.  When we docked in Roatan we were informed the casino was open all day.  I played several hours in the morning and about noon officials came on the ship and shut the casino down.  No other info was available.  Some people had been informed before the cruise the casino would be open in port.  Maybe in the future?

Thanks all!

I'm curious about Bermuda too. I'll be on a Carnival cruise that docks there overnight.

For the past several years, casinos can open from 9pm to 3am while docked in Bermuda.

We were on the 9 nite Navigator also. The  casino is also opened all day, while at the private islands, & while at Grand Turk.

March 16th sailing on the Symphony, the compass listed the slots opening at 2pm, in St. Kitts. I thought.. well that cannot be right since we do not leave until 6pm. Sure enough, the casino opened at 2pm.

Thanks everyone!!

I've been to Aruba and Curacao multiple times. The casino was never open while in port. However, Aruba has loads of casinos - take the city bus to the Ritz-Carlton (I've had great luck there and free drinks while playing), then walk down the beach and hit all of them. In Curacao, there's a casino before going across the moving bridge. All pay out in US currency.

Thanks

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO Fellow Cruisers:  For those of you going to Bermuda, in the past few years the cruise line is able to purchase a special licence from the Bermudian government to be open while in port.  The casino would open at 2100 hours or 9PM.  It stays open until 0200 hours or 2 AM.  Don't know which cruise lines purchase that licence.  Was able to play on Celebrity Cruise Line.

NCL casino is open from 9pm till 5am in Bermuda. (Looks like NCL pays 135K everytime an “Away” ship docks, now people know why NCL port fees to Bermuda are $255.00 pp. It looks like the non gamblers are now helping foot the bill on gambling fees for players. (I won’t post this on the main page because people would lose their minds haha).

I believe the $135,000 is per season, not per visit.  Especially since the second schedule appears to be per visit based on the much lower numbers.

I stand corrected. You are right, it is for April 1 to Nov 30.

Nice to know those higher port fees are due to a good reason.

I'm certainly going to make use of that casino on the Gem this summer!

(And I agree with CasinoCompChick....it's best we don't mention this on the regular NCL page 😉 )

Dear Casino Player,

Yes, so very correct.

A Carnival   inslip / shipgoing to be re+named a day before we depart NYC down the North River is really just a Gambling Ship Cruise, as it has one more port of call besides Bermuda at North Ireland Island, in Grand Turck.. both allow Gambling when the large ship is berthed in Port.

Court decision supports restrictions on cruise ships in port

Picture of Frank M

  • March 4, 2024

A federal judge has upheld measures passed by Bar Harbor, Maine town, to limit cruise ship passenger numbers. U.S. District Judge Lance Walker ruled a referendum passed in 2022 does not violate any existing state or federal inter-state maritime laws.

Business Owners Opposed Referendum Vote

The vote called for a daily cap of 1,000 cruise passengers, but local business owners took legal action to overturn it, saying it was unconstitutional. The judge disagreed.

“Congestion in downtown Bar Harbor is a seasonal fact of life, but it is exacerbated by the regular morning and afternoon pulse of ship passengers and tour buses,” Judge Walker wrote in his ruling. “The 1,000-person limitation is a significant downshift from the passenger caps previously observed in Bar Harbor. But that downshift also promotes noneconomic interests.”

Town is heavily reliant on seasonal tourism

A large cruise ship in the water near a forest at Bar Harbor.

As one of the state’s major ports for cruise ship traffic, Bar Harbor welcomed 272,000 cruise passengers in 2022. The town only has a permanent population of about 5,000. Due to its proximity to Arcadia National Park, around four million tourists visit the town annually.

Bar Harbor is a popular port of call on most New England and Canada cruise itineraries. The impacts of over-tourism have been felt for years, with traffic congestion and issues over cruise ship capacity limits beginning to gain support during the pandemic shutdown.

A survey by Pan Atlantic Research three years ago found over half of Bar Harbor residents said cruise ships negatively impacted the quality of life in the town.

Will this pan out? In a similar move, the residents of Key West voted against large cruise ship docking in the city during a 2020 election . A majority of the residents voted for the ban and won. However, that decision was overturned by Florida’s governor, who stated that residents can not control maritime commerce.

10 Things to Never do in Cruise Ports

A re you going on a cruise? It’s always a good idea to do your research so you familiarize yourself with the do’s and don’ts in cruise ports of call. You don’t want to get in harm’s way. Here are things to never do in cruise ports so your vacation goes smoothly and safely.

Things to Never Do in Cruise Ports of Call

1. don’t assume there will always be taxis.

It’s not a good idea to assume that you can easily hail a taxi or an Uber at the port. In some smaller ports, finding taxis can be difficult, which can lead to trouble.

For example, during our British Isle Cruise, we docked at Cobh, which is a small town close to Cork and the Blarney Castle. We wanted to save some money, so we decided to get a cab to and from Blarney Castle instead of using the cruise shore excursion. We were able to get a taxi to Blarney Castle, but when it was time to come back to the ship, we couldn’t find any taxis.

Uber kept canceling on us because there weren’t enough drivers available in the small town. I started to panic, but fortunately, we were eventually able to get an Uber back to the ship.

However, if we hadn’t been able to get a ride, we would have been stranded at Blarney Castle, which was 38 minutes from the cruise port. This would have made us miss the ship! To be safe, it’s better to book a shore excursion from the cruise or through an independent tour operator like viator .

2. Wear Your Cruise Lanyard

One of the things you should never do in the cruise port is to wear your cruise lanyard ashore. It can make you stand out as a tourist when you are off the ship.

When you are out ashore sightseeing, shopping or at the beach, don’t wear your cruise lanyard. You will immediately look like a tourist and become a target for thieves and pickpocketers.

I suggest keeping a low profile when you are on shore. You can store your keycard and other valuables in a secure pocket or bag. This way, you can avoid drawing attention to yourself and enjoy your shore excursion without any trouble.

Check out: 16 Cruise Ship Embarkation Hack (How to Board the Ship Faster)

3. Miss the Ship

Similar to airplanes, cruise ships will not wait for you. If you miss the “all aboard time” you will have to find another way to get back on the ship by meeting your cruise at the next port! It’s a hassle and can be very stressful!

That is why when disembarking from the ship, it’s important to always check what time you need to be back on board. You can usually find the “all aboard” time in the daily planner and it will posted on a sign at the gangway.

If you are forgetful, take a picture of the “all aboard time” sign and set an alarm on your phone. Also, make sure to check that your watch has the correct time since time zones can change.

If you need to take a tender boat to the port, make sure you allocate enough time for it. Find out when the last tender departure time is, there is usually a sign near the tender gangway.

Check out: 10 Ridiculous Time Wasters to Avoid on a Cruise

4. Bringing Shells Back on Board

It’s important to remember that seashells, corals, flowers, plants, and even leaves are not allowed to be brought back to the cruise ship. Although it can be tempting to collect these items during your shore excursions, many cruise lines prohibit their guests from bringing them back onboard.

For example, during a Caribbean cruise with my then 3-year-old son, he found a large leaf (as big as his head) on a beach in Dominica and wanted to bring it back to the ship. Unfortunately, the ship’s security wouldn’t allow it, and despite his tears, they couldn’t make an exception.

5. Forgetting Your Shore Excursion Ticket

In this day and age of e-tickets, shore tickets excursions are still printed on paper. Make sure you bring your tickets with you when you get off the ship to join your shore excursion. Whether it’s a cruise shore excursion or an independent tour, it’s safest if you have your tickets as proof. It will be a real hassle to have to go back to your cabin to retrieve your shore excursion tickets.

6. Not Checking the Travel Advisory

You should always check with the US Department of State for the latest travel advisory of the places you are going to. Don’t assume that every port is safe. For example, the US Department of State has recently raised the advisory level for the Bahamas to Level 2 due to crime and water safety issues. Read about the new travel advisory: Beware Bahamas Travel Advisory Increases

If you’re going to a port where there is a travel advisory, just take extra precautions. Even in Europe where it’s common to fall victim to pickpocketers! I suggest using slash-proof bags like this anti-theft cross body bag because the strap and bag are slash-resistant and there is also RFID blocking so your card information is safe from identity thieves.

7. Wear Expensive Jewelry & Designer Bags

Avoid attracting unwanted attention from potential thieves at the port. You don’t want to be a target! I suggest leaving your expensive jewelry and designer bags at home.

Instead, you can bring some inexpensive accessories that match your outfits. This way, you can still look stylish and have fun without worrying about your belongings. It’s worth the peace of mind!

Check out: 11 Anti-Theft Cruise Tips that Every Cruiser Needs to Know

8. Leave Your Passport in Your Cabin

Always bring your passport down with you to the port. Don’t leave it in your cabin. Even though you can get in and out of the ship with your cruise card, you will still need your passport at the port. Some cruise ports will ask you to show your passport and/or cruise card to get back on the ship. It’s also a good idea to have your passport with you just in case you miss the ship and you have to fly to another cruise port to get back on the ship.

9. Drink too Much

One thing to never do at cruise ports is to drink too much. Many cruise ports, especially, the Caribbean cruise ports are surrounded by bars. Some shore excursions are party boats with unlimited alcoholic beverages.

Although it may be tempting to spend the day drinking at popular places like Senor Froggy’s, it’s important to be careful. Drinking alcohol while being exposed to the sun can be a dangerous combination. Just be careful, because you don’t want to get too drunk that you miss the ship!

10. Wing It if You are a Big Group

If you’re traveling with a large group, the last thing you want is to be stranded at the cruise port, unable to find transportation and wandering around aimlessly. It can be challenging to find taxis that can accommodate a big group, since you will need a van or multiple taxis.

To avoid this, it’s always a good idea to pre-book shore excursions, either through the cruise or with independent tour operators. If you’re a large group, you should consider booking a private tour, since these offer a more personalized experience and allow you to explore destinations at your own pace.

Plus, private tours may end up being the same price or even less expensive than the cruise shore excursions. A great platform to book tours is with viator .

Sightseeing:

Montenegro is a country with deep blue sea, crystal clear rivers, mountains that reach the sky, dense forests, and beautiful lakes. It is bordered on the southeast by Albania. On the south, it is separated from Italy by the Adriatic Sea. Its western neighbors are the former Yugoslav republics of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Although there are some nice stony beaches in Bar itself, many tourists choose destinations in other small towns in the Bar municipality, notably Sutomore, with its beautiful long sandy beach. The natural area around Bar is mostly untouched and is rich in vegetation.

The Old Olive of Mirovica is said to be one of the oldest olive trees in Europe and one of the oldest trees in the world. In 1957, it was placed under state protection. Numerous legends and traditions are associated with the tree. For instance, families that had a dispute would come to the tree to make peace. This explains its name, Mirovica, mir meaning peace.

Although it is a port town, it is amazingly clean and has many developed green areas. Around it there are many tourist attractions. The old town of Bar, Haj Nehaj Fortress, with the remnants from the 15 th century fortress and the castle of King Nikola, represent the historic and cultural monuments of this town

Tours Excursions Transportation:

During the summer months there is a local bus service running between Sutomare (about 5km north along the coast) and Bar. Services are hourly. Bar is a small city and everywhere is walkable. The walk between Bar and the beaches in Susanj will take about 30 minutes or taxi drivers will be happy to take you.

Shopping and Food

Shopping in Bar offers endless possibilities. The town's shopping area is within walking distance of the pier with stores and souvenir shops, cafes and restaurants. Some shops close for the obligatory lunchtime between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Tourist-oriented shops usually stay open throughout the day.

There is an open market just outside the old town, there you can buy almost anything from fresh vegetables to sunglasses.

The local currency is the euro. Montenegro however is not part of Euro Zone, in fact not even part of the EU. Smart thinking of the government!

Carnival Cruise Line sets its sights on new Bahamas port of call

Carnival to open grand bahama celebration key in summer of 2025.

Lokono Cove is the name of the retail area coming to Carnival’s Grand Bahama Celebration Key. The cruise line’s new port of call is expected to open in summer 2025.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Carnival Cruise Line has released another round of updates on what travelers can expect when its new private destination Grand Bahama Celebration Key opens.

Debuting in summer 2025, the port of call will welcome ships from Florida ports Port Canaveral, PortMiami, Tampa and Jacksonville, as well as six other U.S. ports.

The 369-acre site less than 20 miles east of Freeport will be the first dedicated to Carnival Cruise Line, although Carnival ships have used sister line destinations Princess Cays and Half Moon Cay for years.

The largest port construction project in the line’s history will be carved into five segments the company calls portals. Carnival released details about the third one tied to retail, an artisan village called Lokono Cove. (“Lokono” means “the people” in the native Lucayan language.)

The name was the winning selection from Grand Bahamas resident Deidre Rahming, who was on hand in Miami Beach with an entourage from the Bahamian government on Tuesday at the Seatrade Cruise Global conference.

She received a check for $5,000 from Carnival and a future day pass for the resort, which won’t normally be open to visitors from the island. The line says at least 300 jobs will be generated for locals serving the cruise guests.

Lokono Cove will have kiosks and stores alongside “an authentic Bahamian artisan market” showcasing local craftsmanship, according to Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy. Beyond the items for sale, the space will have music and murals to enhance the space, and local food.

“Lokono Cove will be a treasure trove — a place for our guests to immerse themselves in the spirit of the Bahamas and find locally inspired keepsakes, symbols of paradise they can share with loved ones or cherish for themselves for years to come,” Duffy said. “Honoring the beauty and culture of the Bahamas is integral to our plans for Celebration Key, and that will be on display throughout Lokono Cove.”

The space also will be the gateway for visitors to explore Grand Bahama.

It’s the third name drop by Carnival following the reveal of welcome area Paradise Plaza and adult-friendly area Calypso Lagoon. The final two space names and details, which will be a family-friendly area and an adults-only private area, will be revealed later.

The site will also have a south-facing, mile-long beachfront expanse and a massive freshwater inland lagoon that the line says is the largest in the Bahamas and Caribbean.

Paradise Plaza features a rainbow-colored walkway through a sunshine entranceway with a 10-story “Suncastle” as a centerpiece. The welcome area is the place to book the day’s activities, including cabanas, water sports and shore excursions. The area will also feature a Bahamian-themed fountain and ice cream shop.

Calypso Cove is the name of an adult-friendly area coming to Carnival’s Celebration Key on Grand Bahama island when it opens in summer 2026.

Calypso Lagoon, just to the west, is home to the sport court, the freshwater lagoon and lounging options galore. It’s home to a bar with 50 swings that let visitors dip their feet into the water, and just one of many bars serving the space and two full-service restaurants and other casual snack shacks. The adults-only area of the portal will feature a swim-up bar with a DJ, food trucks and more lounging options.

Future expansion will build beyond the five portals, including the construction of a water park.

The port of call will open with one dock capable of handling Carnival’s largest ships, the 6,000-passenger Excel class.
