Argentina Tours & Vacations

Water rushing over the falls at Iguaza Falls, on a sunny day, Argentina

Leafy vineyards, eclectic galleries, char-grilled barbecue evenings and epic waterfalls make for one big tantalizing adventure.

From saucy cities brimming with bars to monster waterfalls and all the steak you can eat, Argentina promises (and delivers) good times to all who come. Drink to a good drop in Mendoza, be blown away by the aquatic thundering of Iguazu Falls , take a gondola up a mountain in Salta, or lose yourself to some hip shakin’ nights in the bars of Buenos Aires all the way to Rio de Janeiro . It’s hard to imagine the continent of  South America  (or the world) without that flaming wedge known as Argentina.

Food and drink.

Like many other aspects of Argentinian culture, its cuisine has been heavily influenced by European immigration. Mix Spanish and Italian flavors with Argentina's top quality (and affordable!) beef and dairy products, and you have a combination worth jumping on that long-haul flight for. Check our guide on all things food in South America .

It’s important to keep in mind that dinner is eaten late in Argentina. Most restaurants close in the afternoon and do not reopen until 8 pm, though locals typically don't actually begin dinner until 9 or 10 pm.

Here are some must-try dishes and drinks in Argentina:

With Spanish origins, asado describes succulent barbequed meat, slow-cooked on a metal frame over an open fire or a bed of hardwood charcoal. In Argentina, asado is equal parts a dish and a social gathering – both of which you'll want to experience.

2. Provoleta

Soft provolone cheese is grilled in a skillet and topped with oregano, chili flakes or other herbs. A typical asado starter, provoleta is crisp on the outside, warm and gooey on the inside and delicious all around.

3. Chimichurri

A piquant combination of diced garlic, chopped parsley and oregano, olive oil and vinegar, this classic Argentinean condiment is the quintessential accompaniment to grilled meat.

4. Malbec wine

Argentina has one of the world’s most renowned wine regions. Malbecs from the wineries of Mendoza are famous around the world (and happen to pair well with steak), though other provinces also produce quality wines, including Torrontes from Cafayate and Syrahs from San Juan.

5. Alfajores

Argentina’s favorite sweet biscuit. Take two round shortbreads, fill them with dulce de leche (a decadent caramel made from condensed milk) coat them in chocolate... et voila.

Argentineans take ice cream seriously. Don't miss helado de dulce de leche, the national flavor of Argentina.

7. Dulce de leche

Condensed milk is slowly reduced and sweetened to create a thick, sticky caramel. Find it in alfajores (a crumbly biscuit sandwich filled with dulce de leche), dessert empanadas, drizzled on ice cream or just eat it by the spoonful!

8. Yerba maté

This is Argentina's national drink. A caffeine-rich concoction of chopped and dried yerba maté is prepared in a gourd (maté) and drunk through a silver straw (bombilla). It's rich in antioxidants and polyphenols and has long been used by Indigenous people in South America.

Culture and customs

Argentinian culture and customs are influenced by the waves of European immigration that landed here in the 1880s and during the two World Wars. As a result of immigration, parts of the country feel notably more ‘European’ than other areas of South America.

Argentinians are famously affectionate, loud, passionate about football, and big fans of a good plate of homemade spaghetti. They have strong ties with family and friends, and the major religion is Catholicism.

As a general guide, these are some key things you should know about Argentina:

1. A kiss on the cheek is the most common way of greeting someone

Particularly a friend, but it’s not uncommon between strangers, especially if being introduced by a mutual friend. This is true whether it’s female on female, female on male or male on male.

2. If you befriend someone, expect hugs

Expect a farewell hug and a greeting hug thereafter. Again, this is true whether it’s female on female, female on male or male on male.

3. Expect to be late

Being late for social or cultural events is almost fashionable in Argentina, but it can be an annoyance for travelers.

4. Siesta time is still common

Siestas are particularly popular in provinces such as Mendoza, San Juan, Salta. Shops may close from 1pm to 4pm and reopen until around 8-9pm.

5. Dinner is late

Dinner with locals can be very late. Having dinner at 9pm, 10pm and 11pm is perfectly normal and accepted in Argentina, but can cause a few rumbling tummies with travelers. The best thing to do is keep some snacks with you and try and fall into the local pattern.

6. Nightlife is well and truly nightlife

Pubs, clubs and events don’t kick off until 1-2am…no kidding!

7. The majority of Argentinians are Catholic

Between 70-80% of the population are Catholic, and you should be respectful when visiting churches, cathedrals and religious events. The dress code at religious sites is quite relaxed and no one will get in trouble for attending mass in t-shirts, shorts and thongs. However, closed shoes and trousers are preferred. Swimwear is a big no-no and it can be very offensive to the locals.

8. Avoid talking about the Falkland Islands War

Talking about the Falkland Islands war still evokes raw emotions amongst Argentinians and it's well-advised not to raise the topic with people you don’t know.

Geography and environment

Bordered by  Chile ,  Bolivia ,  Paraguay ,  Brazil  and  Uruguay , Argentina is South America's second-largest country. With a vast range of natural environments, traveling in Argentina presents a revolving door of terrain and landscapes.

From giant glaciers, gushing waterfalls and snow-topped granite pillars of Patagonia to the green grasslands of the Pampas (not to mention the lofty Andes of the north to the steamy wetlands of the north-east), Argentina contains a wealth of biodiversity.

Chile and Argentina both stake a claim over Patagonia. Check out our guide to help you decide which South American country to visit .

Top 5 tango spots in Argentina

1. confiteria ideal.

Be charmed by the grand building, old waiters and genuine tango classes that this Buenos Aires institution has been producing for more than 100 years. It might be a bit rough around the edges, but authenticity is guaranteed in this historic gem.

2. Barrancas de Belgrano

On the weekends, head to this leafy park at dusk to see unpretentious locals tango as the sun sets. Try out your tango steps, mix and mingle with Argentines and tourists, and enjoy the casual, fun vibe that proliferates under the park's gazebo.

3. Plaza Dorrego

This relaxed San Telmo favorite is a top spot for alfresco people-watching, tango viewing, wine drinking and socializing.

4. La Catedral

For a slice of old Argentina, head to this bewitching warehouse of kitsch where you can learn the art of tango with locals amid walls of old posters and a giant glowing, red heart. Lessons are taught in Spanish, and while the dancers here may not be technically great, their passion and love of tango are unquestionable.

5. Caminito

Purists may dismiss La Boca's showy street performers as 'tacky tangoists', but the colorful streets, flamboyant moves and suave outfits do have a bit of flair and provide quintessential Buenos Aires photo ops.

Experience a tango lesson with professional dancers on our 15 day Premium Chile, Argentina & Brazil trip

Many stores in Argentina allow travelers to shop tax-free. Look for a blue and white ‘Tax Free’ sign in store windows and make sure to ask for a Global Blue refund form when making your purchase. Get this form validated by a customs official at the airport when you're leaving the country (they’ll want to see the item and receipt as well), then take it to the Global Blue refund office to get your money back.

It’s a bit of a lengthy process, but it might be worth the effort depending on how much shopping you do.

Keep in mind that siesta is still common in some parts of Argentina. Many stores will close for a few hours in the afternoon and reopening times can be unpredictable.

Things to buy in Argentina

1. Leather goods

Leather goods are normally top of the shopping list for every traveler – and rightly so! The quality of leather products is excellent and prices can be significantly cheaper than at home. The most popular items are jackets, handbags, shoes, boots and belts. A word of warning though – be wary of cheap imitations!

2. Mate cup set

A popular tourist shop item, cups may be sold on their own with a straw, or as a set with loose-leaf mate as well. Quality and design can vary, so it pays to shop around.

A good bottle of Argentina’s famed Malbec can be bought for less than USD 10.

Festivals and events

Argentinians are a lively bunch and like to party. Below are four of the biggest festivals of the year.

1. Buenos Aires Tango Festival - August

Passion oozes from Buenos Aires’ streets as tango fills the city each August. Open-air milongas (dances), film screenings, dance classes and competitions featuring world-class dancers are all part of this sizzling two-week event.

2. Fiesta de la Vendimia (Grape Harvest Festival) - March

This week-long celebration kicks off Mendoza’s grape-picking season, and it's a barrel of fun! The festival features parades, folkloric events and a grand coronation, as hopefuls vie to be chosen as the new Harvest Queen.

3. Carnaval (or Carnival) - February/March

Huge crowds turn up ready to have a good time for carnival celebrations in cities across Argentina. Like in Brazil, parades are a cacophony of colors, featuring feathered and sequined costumes and elaborate floats. Taking place right before Ash Wednesday, the best parties are in Gualeguay-chu and Corrientes.

4. Dia de la Tradicion (Day of Tradition) - November

Argentina’s beret-clad, nomadic cowboys, otherwise known as gauchos, are something of a national symbol. Each year on November 10th, they are celebrated with horsemanship shows, folk music, dancing, tons of barbequed meat and a big gaucho parade in San Antonio de Areco, the symbolic center of gaucho culture.

Must-see cities in Argentina

1. buenos aires.

Buenos Aires is an elegant metropolis of colorful buildings, charming boulevards and cobbled laneways that lead to huge street murals. This city offers something for everyone from traditional cafe bars to trendy closed-door restaurants, speakeasy bars to tango clubs, and mercados to shopping malls.

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

When is the best time to visit Argentina?

Spanning over 2400 miles from its subtropical north to its subpolar south, the climate in Argentina is as diverse as its landscapes. Summer (December to February) is the best time to visit Patagonia as the weather is mild and hiking trails are accessible.

In contrast, Buenos Aires can be very hot, humid and busy in summer, so autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November) may be better if you don't enjoy the heat or want to ditch the crowds.

Autumn is also a stunning time of year in Patagonia and Mendoza when golden colours dominate the landscape.

Iguazu Falls is spectacular all year, but it's a sight to behold in the wet season from December to March when monsoon rains create even more powerful cascades.

If you want to do an Antarctica cruise from Ushuaia, the world's southernmost city, the season runs from November to March when temperatures rise and sea ice melts enough to enable access for cruise ships.

Do I need a visa to visit Argentina?

Most travelers do not need a visa to enter Argentina. This includes visitors from Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, the UK, Ireland and most other Western European countries.

Visa-exempt travelers will usually receive an entry stamp valid for 90 days on arrival. Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Argentina.

The page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in Argentina?

What is internet access like in Argentina?

Internet is easy to access in cafes, bars, restaurants and hotels in large cities and towns, but it may be limited in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Argentina?

Cell phone coverage is very good in Argentina’s cities, but may not be available in rural and mountainous areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in Argentina?

Western-style flushable toilets are the norm in Argentina. It’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they are not always provided. Some hotels and restaurants might have signs asking you to not flush toilet paper – the toilets are modern but the plumbing is not and clogs easily.

Is Argentina a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

As a whole, Argentina is a welcoming destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers. In 2010, the country became the first Latin American nation to legalize same-sex marriage and Buenos Aires hosts the largest annual gay pride parade in South America.

A number of hotels, B&Bs, bars and nightclubs catering to the LGBTQIA+ community can be found in Buenos Aires as well. Though parts of the country, particularly smaller towns, are less tolerant. When in doubt, use discretion outside of large cities.

People packing for a tour

Formal wear

Wind and waterproof coat

Versatile shoes

Adaptor plug

In Argentina, the standard voltage is 120 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type C and I. The standard frequency is 50 Hz.

The sun is extremely strong in Argentina, and you’ll need sunglasses (and sunscreen) to protect yourself, even in winter when the gleaming snow can be blinding.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

More information about Argentina

It’s time to open a bottle of Malbec and dive into the beautiful nation of Argentina, home to a dizzying array of bucket-list favorites and bursting with culture. A South American giant, Argentina occupies much of the cone-shaped end of the continent, making it the 8th-largest country and the largest Spanish-speaking nation in the world. A holiday to Argentina is sure to be a diverse experience, as the country’s greatest assets are its abundant natural beauty, from the epic icy landscapes of Ushuaia , at the literal ‘ End of the World’ , to the tropical rainforest that surrounds the Iguazu Falls. The capital city, Buenos Aires exudes a cosmopolitan charm and attracts artists and literary-types from around the world.

An intense city, Buenos Aires and its famous square Plaza de Mayo is filled with emotion and passion, from the sidewalk Tango dancers to the groups of friends and families spending balmy evenings on cafe terraces in the city plazas. With a distinctive creative atmosphere, Buenos Aires is the usual ‘jumping-off’ point for tours of Argentina . A legendary national cuisine, tantalizing wine scene and a fascinating cultural mix of Latin and European to boot, Argentina tours are a must for travel lovers.

History of Argentina

Like many South American countries, Argentina has a diverse and multi-faceted history. Before the arrival of Europeans in the 16th-century , indigenous communities had inhabited the land for millennia, the oldest evidence of which still exists at the archaeological site of Piedra Museo in the province of Santa Cruz. Parts of northern Argentina were already incorporated into the mighty Inca Empire when the Portuguese and later the Spanish arrived.

The Portuguese discovered the Rio de la Plata and when the Spanish conquistadors landed in 1536 , it wasn’t long until Buenos Aires was settled for the first time. Though no gold was found in the country, Spain established Argentina as part of the Viceroyalty of Rio de La Plata in 1776, and it played an important role in the administration of Spanish colonies in South America. On an Argentina package tour, you’ll be sure to notice the colonial architecture of the cities that transport you back to the days of the conquistadors.

Independence was won by Argentina in 1818, after an 8-year struggle, although civil war followed. From the mid- 1800s onwards the country saw a period of relative peace and stability and a surge of European immigration, particularly from Italy, which is reflected in many elements of Argentinian cuisine today. It wasn’t long until Argentina has grown into a very wealthy and prosperous country, but the Great Depression of the 1930s affected the economy greatly.

A military coup overthrew Isabel Perón in 1976 and saw a crackdown on leftist politics and state terrorism in the aftermath, a period known as the ‘Dirty War’ . Walking through the streets of Buenos Aires today, you can trace the turbulent history of the 20th-century through the different neighborhoods and monuments, an eye-opening experience on a trip to Argentina. Following the Falklands War of 1982, the dictatorship of Videla fell and a democratic election was held to establish a new government.

Nature in Argentina

A package holiday to Argentina is sure to focus on the spectacle of nature and its beautiful landscape. You can do it all in Argentina, from trekking in the Andes mountains , spotting whales in the Beagle Channel and learning to ride horses in the ‘wild west’ of the country. The highest point in Argentina is the staggering Aconcagua at almost 7,000 meters high in the province of Mendoza.

Many visitors to Argentina head straight for Patagonia , a sparsely populated region in the south, shared with Chile and famous for its magnificent mountains such as Fitz Roy , in the Argentinian side, which is accessed from El Chaltén in Argentina by the Los Glaciares National Park ; and Torres del Paine , in the Chilean border.

As well as breathtaking scenery, Argentinian Patagonia has coasts on both the Atlantic and Southern Oceans, home to seals, sea lions, whales, orcas, dolphins, and penguin colonies, so boat trips are a popular way to experience the region. Although there is so much to see in terms of natural wonders, there are a number of top sights that characterize any great tour to Argentina. The Tierra del Fuego National Park is the jewel in the crown of Patagonia and loved by all intrepid travelers that make the journey to its epic landscapes. It’s home to some of the most stunning scenery in the world and is a bird-watchers paradise, with species ranging from penguins to eagles. Wildlife lovers should keep a lookout for pumas who roam the rocky wilderness. Tierra del Fuego is often described as ‘ Patagonia in a nutshell’ and its capital, Ushuaia , are the southernmost city in Argentina and Punta Arenas in the Chilean side.

Another Patagonian treasure is, of course, the Perito Moreno glacier, Argentina’s most popular natural attraction and at a staggering 30 kilometers long it is one of the world’s largest freshwater reserves. Along with its immense size, the Perito Moreno is also incredible in that is is one of the few glaciers in existence to continue advancing, whilst most are retreating. Boat trips and glacier trekking are the best ways to get up close to the Perito Moreno .

In comparison to the snow-blanketed south of the country, the Iguazu Falls is another icon of Argentina. On the rainforested border with Brazil, lies this incredible natural wonder, composed of a 3 kilometer-long chain of cascades that make up one of the world’s most awe-inspiring sights. The thundering sound of the falls with a move you as you come face-to-face with the walls of water on the fantastic network of walkways.

Culture in Argentina

Argentina boasts a highly sophisticated and complex culture known for its sultry Tango dancing and brilliant cuisine. In the cities, such as Buenos Aires , you can expect a plethora of museum, galleries, literary bars and a cosmopolitan culture composed of a mix between Italian and Spanish cultures; a result of immigration. A holiday to Argentina is incomplete without taking the time to soak up the melting-pot vibe of the big city Buenos Aires, discovering its famous neighborhoods, such La Boca, San Telmo, Recoleta, Puerto Madero, and Palermo.

On the other hand, in the wilds of Argentina’s Pampas region, traditional gaucho culture is alive in the many remote ranches and farms where horsemanship and cattle rearing reign supreme. Argentinian’s are social people and you’ll notice the warm hospitality if you take a trip to Argentina.

In the evenings the city is alive with families and friends spending time together and you’ll often see the passing around of special metal gourdes filled with mate, a herbal drink made from the yerba mate plant and traditional Argentinan custom. Argentinians are proud of their national achievements such as the impressive number of Argentinan Nobel Laureates ; a total of five in a range of different fields.

Experience one of the treasures of South America with a tour package of Argentina. From the artistic capital of Buenos Aires to the dream-like landscapes of Patagonia , Argentina excites and amazes with its bucket-list-worthy sights and complex culture and history. So, set off on an unforgettable journey to the ‘End of the World’ and let your ears and heart be filled by the rhythm of Tango music.

Destination must-sees.

Argentina ms1

Buenos Aires:

The capital city of Argentina, birthplace of the tango, home to a mosaic of European-styled architecture and South American spirit, it’s nearly impossible not to fall head over heels, madly and deeply in love with this very special place. It’s often called the "Paris of Latin America" and lives up to its name with incredible food, fantastic shopping, stunning architecture and culture galore.

Argentina ms2

Tango Performance:

The Tango is arguably one of the greatest contributions Buenos Aires has made to world culture. The famous dance is said to have originated in the mid-1800s by the large influx of immigrants from Africa, Spain, Italy, England, Poland and Russia. Visitors can enjoy glitzy tango shows, but anyone inspired to perfect their moves can find a willing teacher in salons, cafes and at dance events.

Argentina ms4

A sliver of steep streets and jumbled buildings, this city lies between the Andes and the Southern Ocean. It is at the southernmost tip of South America, which gives it the nickname “the end of the world.” But this is no isolated spot that’s cut off from civilization! It’s a busy port filled with adventures like hiking, sailing, skiing, kayaking, and even scuba diving. Many tourists travel to “the end of the world” each year to enjoy its many treasures.

Destination Must-Dos

Argentina md1

Argentina meat from the Papas region:

Argentina has the second-highest consumption rate of beef and is the third-largest beef exporter in the world. There are millions of herds of cattle in Argentina, mostly kept in the fertile pastures of the pampas where they feed on grass and live under more natural conditions. Many Argentinians believe strongly that raising beef on natural grasslands is a sustainable tradition that produces healthier animals and more nutritious meat.

Argentina md2

Argentina is the largest wine producer in South America and the fifth largest producer in the world. It’s best known for its versions of classic red wines like Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. It is said that long ago, a catholic priest who came to these lands planted vineyards near their monasteries to ensure the provision of wine for the celebration of holy mass and the rest, as they say, is history.

Argentina md3

Perito Moreno Glacier:

Three miles wide and twenty stories high, this is the jewel of Argentina’s Patagonia, located in Los Glaciares National Park. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and it forms part of the Patagonian Continental Ice Field. It’s one of the few glaciers in the world that is still advancing. Visitors enjoy spotting floating icebergs from the shore and hearing the powerful sound of ice crashing into the water as they break from the glacier.

Argentina md4

Iguazu Falls:

This is a natural wonder of the world with over 270 falls in the area, plus many ways to view them from both the ground and by helicopter. A visit to Iguazu Falls (Iguazu means “Big Water” in Guarani Indian) will leave you in awe. Sitting on the border of Argentina and Brazil, this roaring, jaw-dropping machine provides you with a visceral experience you’ll never forget. It’s unlike any waterfall on earth and it attracts more than one million visitors a year who are forever transformed by its magnitude and splendor.

Iguazu Falls in Argentina

The best time to visit Argentina is during the Southern Hemisphere’s fall and winter, from April to July, or during the Southern Hemisphere’s spring and summer, from October to January.

The temperatures in cities like Mendoza and Buenos Aires are consistently comfortable during the spring and early summer or fall and early winter, but the most dramatic changes in temperatures take place in the Subantarctic south at Patagonia during the winter months from May to September when snow and wind arrive, or the tropical north at Iguazu during the summer months from December to February when the region sees a large increase in rainfall. In the shoulder season of spring and fall, you will have fewer crowds and better temperatures to enjoy the entire country, top to tip.

Argentina - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Visit Buenos Aires during your Argentina tour.

Covering an area of close to 1 million sq. miles, Argentina has everything, ranging from natural beauty and sultry lifestyles to exotic cuisine and a splendid culture. Considering that the country gave the world things like futbol, beef and tango, a trip to Argentina is sure to be nothing short of spectacular.

The delightful Iguazu Falls, the enchanting Glaciar Perito Moreno, Patagonia… Argentina has its fair share of exhilarating natural beauty. It is home to beautiful wetlands, rustic mountains, vast arid deserts, steppes, Valdivian forests, salt flats, lake districts and ice fields and all kinds of birds and animals that come with these regions.

Tour Highlights

  • Dance the tango at a milonga in Buenos Aires, the city where the dance was invented
  • Visit the Iguazu Falls
  • Try ice hiking on Glacier Perito Moreno
  • See an opera at Teatro Colon (the third best opera house in the world)
  • Travel to The Hill of Seven Colors

Travel Tips

  • Argentinian cuisine is very meat heavy, and rare meatless dishes are often covered in cheese. If you're a vegetarian or a vegan, be sure to do your research beforehand to find a restaurant that caters to you.
  • When on a holiday in Argentina, do as the locals do. Slow down and find a new appreciation for time. Relax, enjoy your meals, and (if you can avoid it) try not to rush.
  • The idea of personal space doesn't always apply in Argentina. Expect locals to stand close to you when chatting. They may also reach out and touch you. Try to remember this is their sociable culture and is not intended to make you feel uncomfortable.
  • Counterfeit money is very common in Argentina. Always double check your notes. Look for the bill's clear hologram by holding it up to the natural light, and run your fingers over the pictured diplomat's suit to ensure it is textured.
  • Around Christmas time, the city of Buenos Aires shuts down almost completely as locals head to the coast. Shops and restaurants (even fast food chains) will likely be closed, so plan ahead if visiting at this time. Consider visiting when the weather is best during Argentinian fall (March to May) or spring (September to November).

Argentina tours — Top destinations to visit

  • Hike the famous trails in Patagonia:  Windswept plains, enormous glaciers, enormous mountains, and turquoise lakes with crystal clear water can all be found in Patagonia. Any trip to Patagonia must include a trip to the Perito Moreno glacier, where icebergs collide in an awe-inspiring spectacle. Avid hikers will love the opportunity to navigate the difficult trails and take in the breathtaking views from panoramic walkways. Mount FitzRoy and Paine offer many hiking opportunities if you travel further north.
  • Visit the end of the world in Ushuaia: Visit Ushuaia which offers breathtaking views of Argentina's countryside, a massive glacier system, and an array of wildlife. This is Argentina's southernmost point that provides a gateway to Antarctica. A scenic train journey takes you to the city's farthest southern point. Take a boat ride across the Beagle Channel to see the penguin colony on Martillo Island. Also, take the chance to see the Patagonian scenery at Tierra del Fuego National Park. If you enjoy skiing and other winter sports, the region has an abundance of snow and ski resorts.
  • Immerse yourself in the bustling Buenos Aires:  It is difficult not to fall in love with Buenos Aires. Known as the Paris of South America, the city’s stunning architecture, exciting nightlife, lush parks, and diverse cuisines will hold visitors in thrall. A tour of Buenos Aires would take you to La Boca, the location of early European settlers; Plaza de Mayo, the magnificent memorial square honoring Argentine independence; Teatro Colon, one of the most breathtaking concert venues in the world; and many other locations. In addition, you can partake in a wine tasting session, taste a premium steak, watch a football match, and enjoy the elegant and seductive movements of Tango dancers.
  • Take in the magic of Iguazu Falls:  The magnificent Iguazu Falls is the world's largest system of natural waterfalls. They are known for their awesome strength and thunderous flow of gushing water. Feel the raw force of nature as you take a boat ride to look down at the renowned Devil's Throat, a section of the falls that generates almost half of the flow of the entire fall. Participate in watersports like rafting and kayaking for a more immersive experience. If you do not feel like getting wet, there are also five paved hiking trails as well as wildlife viewing areas.
  • Admire the glaciers in El Calafate:  El Calafate is the gateway to Patagonia and it is known for its magnificent glaciers. While you are there, make it a point of visiting the Perito Moreno Glacier. It is one of the few advancing glaciers in the world, and the sight of large ice chunks crashing into the ice field surrounding the glacier is simply awe-inspiring. In Los Glaciares National Park, visit Spegazzini Glacier, Upsala Glacier and Mount Fitz Roy. Explore the city of El Calafate which also offers opportunities for wildlife viewing, boating on crystal-clear rivers and lakes, hiking in the Andes, and riding horses on historic estancias.
  • Experience the breath of fresh air in Salta:  The northern city of Salta offers radically different experiences from the glaciers and waterfalls that Argentina is known for. You will get to enjoy Salta 's desert landscapes, arid altitude views, and laidback way of life. Marvel at the renowned fourteen-colored rainbow mountains, learn about the city's past, sample some fine wine in Cafayate, climb the Cerro San Bernardo hill and snap some photos of the Salinas Grandes. There are so many things to see and do in Salta.

If you are planning a trip to Argentina , you will want to know about the best time to visit Argentina as well as check out all the available Argentina tours. You may also wish to learn more about the top things to do in Argentina . Once you are sure about some of the activities you wish to experience in Argentina, along with the destinations you want to visit , you may want to consider how many days to stay in Argentina . We generally recommend staying at least 7 days in Argentina , but recommend 10 days in Argentina or more, to get the most out of your trip to Argentina.

Next, we recommend you start thinking about the money you can allocate to the trip to know whether you should be looking for a budget tour, a luxury tour, or perhaps a completely customized tour to Argentina . If you are in doubt, check out all our Argentina tours at the top of this page.

Tours in Argentina - Questions and Answers

Though Argentinians are not considered to be very punctual, not respecting a schedule in a business meeting may be interpreted as being rude. Do not discuss politics and do not, under any circumstances, talk casually about the Falklands War (Argentines call it Guerra de las Malvinas, incidentally). If a type of herbal tea called ‘mate’, which is quite popular in Argentina, is offered to you in a small vessel, it is impolite to say ‘no’. (If you don’t enjoy it, it's okay to refuse the next round.) Argentines stand close to each other while speaking. Don’t back off—it may be considered discourteous.

Argentina is the world’s eighth-largest country, with a wide variety of landscapes. So, depending on the kind of trip you have in mind, you can visit the country throughout the year. Overall, the best time to visit Argentina is between December and February—the beaches are warm and welcoming. If you want to explore the spectacular wilderness of Patagonia , the ideal time is between December and March, though it can get crowded. March to May is perfect to cover Buenos Aires and the Lake District. Mid-June through to October in Argentina is great for winter-sports enthusiasts. The best ski conditions are from mid-July till early September. However, do note that July is the winter vacation month and sees local crowds in many ski resorts. More information here .

Though Argentina is not among the cheapest countries to visit, if you’re bringing in a higher-value currency, it will not seem very expensive. If budget is a constraint, it is possible to squeeze in a trip for as little as USD 40 a day (we’re talking hostel accommodation, public transport, etc). But for a more comfortable trip, be prepared to shell out upwards of USD 100. Typically, coastal towns like Del Plata and popular tourist destinations like Patagonia are more expensive. Pro tip: think US dollars and not Argentine pesos because the value of the local currency may not be what you’ve researched online.

We recommend a minimum of two weeks in Argentina , but for a truly comprehensive experience that takes in the entire length of the country, you’ll need 21 to 25 days. Though a three-week tour to Argentina would include internal flights, you will not only visit the best destinations but also discover some hidden gems. If you have limited time to spare, focus on a few places. So, in 7 days you can soak in the culture and urban rhythms of capital Buenos Aires and visit a few more highly rated destinations like Salta, Iguazu Falls, or Patagonia. For more details on how many days to spend in Argentina, see here .

English is not spoken widely in Argentina. You might meet younger people in big cities who speak English, and it is generally understood in the tourist industry, but beyond that don’t expect to find too many English speakers. Argentina’s official language is Spanish and most of the country’s 45 million people speak it. Anyone visiting from Spain or other Spanish-speaking countries like Mexico will not find it too hard to navigate the language barrier, though dialects and pronunciations are different. Italian comes second, with around 1.5 million speakers. Other languages with a significant number of speakers include Arabic, German and Yiddish.

Political protests and anti-government rallies are not uncommon in Argentina, especially in capital Buenos Aires. Like elsewhere in the world, these can turn violent at times, so avoid being around such demonstrations. While daytime is fun to explore cities, avoid walking on the streets at night. If you’re stuck somewhere, it’s best to wait for a taxi. Pickpocketing and mugging are among the more common crimes in Argentina. Make sure your valuables are hidden and not easily visible in open pocket areas. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry or carrying fancy accessories and electronic gadgets—this marks you out for petty thieves.

Buenos Aires is a liberal city and Argentines know their fashion—so you can experiment with clothes in the country’s capital. But there are some practical things to consider. For instance, it’s not cold enough to wear heavy-duty hiking clothes in winter. They scream ‘tourist’ from a mile. A light jacket should do. Summers are warm, and breathable cotton clothes make a lot of sense. You’re going to walk around quite a bit while exploring the city, so, ladies, go easy on the high heels—unless, of course, you’re going out to tango in a nightclub. At most other times, flats and sneakers are just fine.

While food costs vary from place to place, a fancy meal inclusive of wine in Buenos Aires is likely to be at least 30% lower than a big city in America or Europe. For more regular meals in Argentina, you can have an all-you-can-eat parrilla (barbeque) for USD 10–20. A meal at a budget restaurant can cost anything between USD 5 and 15 and for a higher-class restaurant up to USD 40. All these prices are, of course, tentative and the actual costs when you’re travelling may differ.

Argentina FAQ's

Argentina is the third most populous country in South America and one of the largest Spanish speaking countries in the world. From the distinct and beautiful landscapes of Patagonia to the rich and artsy culture of Buenos Aires, Argentina is famous for many things. Wine, soccer (futbol), Gauchos, and Tango are all things Argentinean. The country has a rich cultural history with lifestyles uniquely their own. The Argentine people take great pride in the fact that Pope Francis is from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the country boasts one of the highest literacy rates in South America with women leading the way.

In terms of geography, Argentina is an exceptionally diverse country, surrounding everything from harsh deserts to humid jungles. Stretching from the subtropical north to the Subantarctic regions of beautiful Patagonia in the south, Argentina also boasts a rich cultural, artistic, and architectural heritage that has drawn upon many influences from around the world. With its wonderful `barrios,` including colorful arts neighborhoods such as La Boca and trendy districts like Palermo, Buenos Aires has a particularly European feel and is the epicenter, known for its music and dance, for its cuisine, fine wines, and outstanding nightlife. In addition to its many cultural attractions, the country also boasts huge glaciers of the snow-capped Andes and the stunning Iguazu Falls , one of the most popular destinations in all of South America. A few other highlights include the magnificent city of Mendoza , a gateway to the sprawling Wine Country. The small town of El Calafate - Lago Argentino that sits on the shores of Lake Argentino. Ushuaia , `the End of the World`, with it`s strategic location to explore the sprawling Tierra del Fuego National Park. And the opportunity to experience the Gaucho culture of the Pampas region at Estancias (ranches) near Buenos Aires .

While December to March are the months in which Patagonia in South Argentina is most efficiently accessible, the complete country can be visited all year round. The weather in Buenos Aires is ordinarily hot over these months but a visit in the cooler, brisk months of July and August can be pleasant. The Lake District comes alive with wildflowers over spring (September to November), while autumn in the wine valleys encompassing Mendoza features gold and copper colored vines, simply beautiful against the backdrop of the Andes. For more information, check out: Best Time to Visit Argentina .

We recommend 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in larger cities.

By Bus: Bus travel is another means of exploring Argentina, although distances can be long (expect 20+ hour journeys) and if you`re only here for two weeks, it`s probably better to spend a little bit more on flights. By Rental Car: If you`ve got a bit more time, consider renting a car. Car rental is readily available throughout Argentina, though it is a bit expensive compared with other forms of transportation. Travelling by car allows you to visit locations that are hard to reach by public transportation. Patagonia, in the South of Argentina, is a popular driving location among tourists due to the magnificent views across many miles of open land. Argentina generally recognizes valid drivers` licenses from foreign jurisdictions. Drivers must be over 21. The rental companies will charge the renters card ARS6000 to be used in the event of an accident. Traffic regulations in Argentina are generally the same as in the US, but the local often ignore the regulations. On roads and highways it`s mandatory to have car lights on, even during daytime. Be aware that the driving style in Argentina is aggressive and chaotic. Pay attention at night. By Train: There are trains from Buenos Aires to Tucuman, Cordoba, Rosario (from Retiro station), Bahia Blanca and Mar del Plata (from Constitucion station) among others. Also some limited services in and out of Viedma and Bariloche. Tickets are very cheap. In recent years the government has promoted the re-establishment of long distance passenger trains, although most lines still operate at a low frequency (one or two departures weekly). The rail network is very limited, and intercity buses offer more frequencies in most corridors.

The currency of Argentina is the Argentine peso. US dollars are not accepted. Please be sure to have the correct currency on hand or be prepared to exchange your dollars for Argentine pesos upon arrival. Currency exchange desks can be found at the airport and many locations throughout the city. For more detailed information, consult our guide by clicking here Tipping in Argentina .

Spanish is the official language of Argentina and a vast majority of Argentines speak Spanish as their first language. Other minor languages common to Argentina are English and Italian.

When is the best time to travel to argentina.

The best time to travel to Buenos Aires is in spring (September to November) and fall (March to May), as the summer can be hot and humid. Iguazu Falls has a tropical climate and can be visited year-round. For Bariloche and the Lake District, Mendoza, and Cordoba, the best time is the fall, when temperatures are more comfortable and these destinations are less crowded. For Patagonia, the best time is October to March, when the weather is warmer, and more tourist attractions can be visited. For skiing, the season runs from June to October. See all Argentina FAQ .

2. Iguazu Falls

Iguazu Falls is a mighty waterfall that sits on the border between Argentina and Brazil. A series of walkways let you explore the falls…

Please keep in mind this is just MY experience on the tour, and I'm sure everyone's is different and unique. I was very thankful that We the People was open to feedback after the tour and that they will continue to improve future trips. Thanks! 1. Communication: The communication with Eve from We the People was great. She was very quick at responding to my requests before the tour started, and even offered for the trip to start for me in Chalten instead of Calafate since I was the only one on the itinerary and she knew I would coming from Chalten. The frustrating part is that I was not notified until a couple weeks before the trip that I was the ONLY one on my itinerary. 2. Activities: Though it was a 7 day tour, there were only 3 half-day activities organized through the tour. The tours themselves were good and the guides were good. Perito Moreno Glacier- this was a little disappointing for two reasons. EVERY other person on my bus (about 40 people) had the boat ride included in their fare, but I was the only one who would have to pay extra if I wanted it. For the price paid for the tour, I would think the boat ride should be included. Also, I was told when I booked the tour that I could add mini-trekking as an optional activity for this day. When I asked the tour operator the night before, I was told that I was not able to add the activity. We the People explained to me (in a What's App message) that they are still new at organizing these tours and probably had given me inaccurate information. This was frustrating because I did not have additional days allotted where I could have booked this activity on my own, so I did not get to do it. I do hope this gets improved for future trips. Lago del Desierto- while this tour was "guided," we were left alone to complete the hike to the glacier. I completed this hike alone and the conditions at the top were VERY windy. Would definitely be better if there were other people in my We the People group. One of the main attractions of Patagonia/EL Chalten is the Fitz Roy trek, and I didn't really feel like the itinerary allowed time for this. You need an entire day for this trek and need to start early in the morning, and the tour just isn't designed that way. 3. Lodging: The hostels booked were as good as I could expected. No complaints with the lodging. I booked the "cheaper" option for this trip so I knew I would be in shared accommodations. 4: Guide: As a solo traveler, I feel much more comfortable with an assigned tour guide (and usually other travelers as well). There is no "dedicated guide" for the duration of the trip. For my experience, I only got guides on the day trips and it was the guide that I would have gotten had I booked those activities independently. When I asked We the People about this, they said they only provide a group tour guide if there are more then 4 people on the trip, but that the tour guide only organizes activities and does not offer advice or guidance. This is clearly listed on their tour page, but I didn't know I was the only one on the tour until a few weeks before so it was a little tougher on my own. 5: Transportation: Transportation was good and I have no complaints here. 6: Overall Experience: I felt like it was more of a "partially guided" tour and felt the price was a bit much for what was included. I always justify the cost of a fully guided group tour by knowing that part of my cost is going to pay a tour guide and I will get that one-on-one attention. The experience might be different with more people on the itinerary.

The End of the World + El Chalten (9 Nights) Tour

The End of the World + El Chalten (9 Nights)

A good/ very good tour. Some spectacular scenery. Very weather dependent. We were lucky on the whole. Torres del Paine was the only bad day, when it rained and was really windy. Our contact with HiTravel whilst we were on tour was Stefania. She is terrific and couldn't do enough for us. I would recommend this tour. You need pesos whilst on tour . Paying by debit card for national parks is expensive. Spectacular scenery. Lucky enough to see dolphins and a whale in Ushuaia. Los pioneros in El Chalten was very good. Excellent breakfast. Our hotel in El Calafate was also good. Los Cormoranes in Ushuaia was not up to standard.

The G adventure tour is excellent. The trip was great because of excellent program and great CEO from G adventure. Starting from Buenos Arias, everything is planned and taking care of. We had excellent weather, a great group of adventure minded people. Val (our CEO from G adventure) communicated everything ahead of time and making sure everyone's needs were met. The sighs and hiking were great. Val reserved dinner for the group almost everyday so we could have fun after a hard day of hiking. All in all, a trip to remember.

GUIDE TO TRAVEL argentina

Best times to travel and other useful information

WHERE & W HEN TO TRAVEL ARGENTINA

Argentina is situated in the Southern Hemisphere. Making its seasons the opposite to those experienced in the Northern Hemisphere. Its summer months are between December and February and the winter runs from June to August.

Argentina’s size means there are a varying degree of the seasons. This very much depends on which region of the country you are taking a trip to. During the winter, Southern Patagonia is covered in snow and frequented by icy winds. This means its a great time to see the glaciers in Patagonia, or take part in winter sports.

The winter time is not the ideal time to visit Patagonia, but it is our favorite time of the year to visit the north of Argentina after the sweltering summer heat subsides.

The center of Argentina is an all year round destination, although the spring and fall are great  times of the year to visit Buenos Aires and Mendoza. If you’re looking to discover Argentina’s wildlife, spring is by far the best time to take a trip to Patagonia’s Atlantic coast to take part in wildlife spotting.

Travel documents Argentina Travel Guide

PASSPORT & VISA

All travelers need a valid passport for at least 90 days after their departure from Argentina. However, we strongly recommend traveling with at least 6 months’ validity on your passport at all times.

If you are a U.S. citizen, we recommend visiting VisaHQ who can help you with a range of expedited passport services. This includes new passport applications, passport renewals, and any required visas.

Argentina also requires that you have sufficient unused pages in your passport, allowing for any necessary stamps upon arrival and departure.

Check with your airline in case you have any connecting flights overseas as part of your journey to Argentina. It may be the case that countries you pass through en route to your destination may require a separate transit visa.

FAMILY TRAVEL IN ARGENTINA

Taking the family to Argentina? It’s the family vacation of a lifetime. Take in incredible sights such as Iguazú Falls, the Perito Moreno Glacier or a southern right whale in Puerto Madryn. These are bound to make a lasting impression.

Within the towns and cities, there are plenty of parks and tree-lined town squares to enjoy. While Argentina’s stunning national parks will dazzle your kids with everything from mighty glaciers and mountains to mesmerizing waterfalls.

If your kids love cowboys, they’re in for a treat in Argentina. They’ll be able to spot Gauchos strolling through the cities or riding their way through the Pampas, with plenty of chances to join them, especially with a day visit or stay at a traditional estancia.

Involving the family in nature, you’ll all be able to enjoy spotting walrus, southern right and killer whales, as well as penguins in the south. Plus capybara, giant anteaters, and alligators in the north and east.

CULTURE & LANGUAGE

Argentine Spanish is different from the Spanish spoken in other Spanish speaking countries, with the most notable difference being with the use of ‘vos’ instead of ‘tu’ in the second person.

Argentinians also have different pronunciations with ‘ll’ and ‘y’ becoming ‘sh’. The differences to the Spanish spoken in Argentina are not so significant that if you already speak some Spanish, communicating won’t be a problem.

Argentina is home to more languages than just Spanish, divided into two groups. The first group includes indigenous languages spoken in different regions of the country such as Mapuche, Quechua, Toba, and Guarani. The second group consists of the languages spoken by immigrants such as Welsh in Puerto Madryn and German in Bariloche.

Many of the immigrant groups continue to converse in their language to keep their culture alive. French, Polish and Russian can also be heard along with large communities of Koreans, Chinese and Iranians in Argentina.

FOOD SCENE & DINING

All meals in Argentina start later in the day than in the United States. Usually, lunch is served around 2 pm or later and dinner is served around 9 pm. Buenos Aires is a city that takes dining seriously, and meals can easily last for hours.

Argentina is renowned for its steak, and there are several parrilla steakhouses in every Argentine city where you can find asado, barbecued beef, of excellent quality. Pair an asado with a glass of Malbec wine for the ultimate dining delight. You may also consider trying yerba mate with a dish at dinner, as it is the traditional gaucho drink.

You can’t leave Argentina, let alone a meal, without trying their national dessert consisting of dulce de leche , a sweet confection of milk jelly, and the alfajores cookie. Alfajores are cookie sandwiches filled with dulce de leche.

VACCINATIONS & HEALTH

No vaccinations are required to visit Argentina, but please review the US Center for Disease Control & Prevention Recommendations . Make sure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before every trip. These vaccines include the MMR vaccine, DTP vaccine, varicella (chickenpox), polio, and your yearly flu shot.

Travelers do not need yellow fever inoculations for many countries in South America . However, sometimes they are required if you travel from one endemic country to another.

For example, if you travel to Brazil you do not need a vaccination, however, if traveling to Bolivia and then on to Brazil, it IS required. In this instance, if you don’t have a certificate, you will not be allowed to enter the country.

Argentina does not have yellow fever so you can travel from Argentina to Brazil or vice versa without the certificate/vaccination. Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.

MONEY & CURRENCY

Argentina’s official currency is the Peso and the exchange rate as of 2020 is approximately ARS $72.00 to USD $1.00 (for up to date exchange rates go to XE Currency Converter ). Make sure to bring cash with you in US Dollars as they can be easily exchanged throughout Argentina.

Visa, Mastercard, Diners Club, and American Express are all accepted within Argentina, although Visa is by far the most widely accepted. You may have difficulties with changing your traveler’s checks outside of Buenos Aires.

You shouldn’t have any problems using larger bills – unless you are buying a small amount and try to use an ARS $500 or ARS $1000 bill, especially in smaller stores such as kiosks. They might not accept it as they may not have enough change to give back to you.

Aerolineas Argentinas Travel Guide Argentina

GETTING AROUND

From Argentina’s northernmost point to the End of the World in Ushuaia, Argentina stretches over 2,268 miles and 889 miles from east to west and is just slightly less than 1/3 the size of the USA. If you want to see all of Argentina’s highlights, the distances you’ll need to travel are pretty vast.

We recommend travelers to take internal flights to save time and not endure long road trips. However, Argentina’s long-distance bus services are incredibly comfortable, and a 20+ hour bus journey is not as painful or uncomfortable as it sounds.

The long-distance buses have different levels of comfort, and there isn’t much difference between a ‘comfort’ seat and a fully horizontal bed with waiter service included. In some regions of Argentina, hiring a car to drive through the stunning landscapes is the best way to get around. This is especially true in the northeast and the Lake District in Patagonia.

Brazil Travel Guide adaptors

ELECTRICITY

Argentina recently switched its plugs and outlets to Type I (diagonal flat prongs). The neutral and line wires are reversed from those found in various countries such as Australia. You may need to take a plug adapter with you (changes your appliance plug and allows it to fit into the outlet) or a voltage converter.

Before plugging anything into the outlet, double-check the voltage of your appliance to make sure that it is compatible. Travelers from North America can generally use a plug adapter with their devices such as laptops as they usually run between 120-220V. Therefore they won’t need a voltage converter.

However, this is not always true for other appliances which may not work at 220V such as hair dryers.

What are Machu Picchu’s operating hours?

Machu Picchu is open from 6:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m. every day including weekends and holidays.

Which Machu Picchu tour is best for adrenaline seekers?

The Machu Picchu ruins have two on-site hikes: Huayna Picchu Mountain and Machu Picchu Mountain. Both can be combined with a Machu Picchu tour and take 2–3 and 4–5 hours to complete, respectively. For even more adventure, you can hike over multiple days to Machu Picchu via the Inca Trail, Lares or Salkantay treks.

Where should I stay if I spend multiple days at Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu hotel and hostel options are plentiful in Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of the Machu Picchu ruins. Our Top Pick hotels here are:

  • 5-Star Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel
  • 4-Star El Mapi
  • 3-Star Casa Andina Standard Machu Picchu
  • 2-Star Waman Hotel

How many days do I need to tour Machu Picchu?

1–2 days. Two days and one night is the best amount of time to tour Machu Picchu at a leisurely pace: one day to arrive by train and another for the tour and return to Cusco. A whirlwind one-day Machu Picchu tour from Cusco is possible but it will be a long 16–17 hour day.

How long is a guided tour of Machu Picchu?

A guided tour of Machu Picchu is 2 hours long. The ruins operate on a one way circuit that leads to the exit of the ruins and re-entry is not allowed with a Machu Picchu general entrance ticket.

What will I see on a Machu Picchu tour?

A tour of Machu Picchu includes stops at the Guardhouse, agricultural zone, main gate, fountains, tower, temple zone, Temple of the Three Windows, astronomical observatory, Sacred Rock, Group of Three Doorways, royal enclosures, Temple of the Condor and storage area. You will also have views of the west agricultural zone and main square while walking through the ruins.
