Today you will cross the Rimutaka Ranges as you make your way to New Zealand's capital city, Wellington . Often compared to Melbourne, Wellington is vibrant cultural hub.Home to the nation’s centre of government. Legislation happens in the aptly named ‘Beehive,’ an executive wing attached to the Houses of Parliament. At one kilometre squared, the city centre (easily traversed on foot) has an international feel and is peppered with underground art shows, alleyway cafes and New York style delis. Take in the boardwalk view as you stroll to Te Papa Museum or indulge your cinematic side exploring Weta Workshop, the Oscar Award winning design studio for Lord Of The Rings. For a taste of vintage fashion, spend some time (and dollars!) on Cuba Street browsing the boutiques. Work off last night’s dinner with a cycling tour of Oriental Bay and undo your good work with a Hokey Pokey ice-cream in the sun. For those heading further down, the capital is where you board the ferry crossing the Cook Strait to the South Island.

Explore more of Wellington before dropping your rental car at the airport depot and continuing your onward journey.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - Zealandia Wildlife Sanctuary Night Tour

Wellington, home to New Zealand’s centre of government has a largely cosmopolitan feel. Often referred to as ‘mini-Melbourne’, this (self described) windy city is a melting pot of art, culture, food and fashion. Quirky laneway bars, underground art shows, and hipster eateries make up its inner city vibe, while a host of sandy beaches outside the urban bustle bring a cheerful holiday feel.

Head to Te Papa Museum for a history lesson and a ticket to one of its many international exhibitions or jump aboard the Wellington Cable Car at Lambton Quay - the only running funicular railway in the country.

Go behind the scenes at Weta Workshop, the Oscar Award Winning design studio behind Lord Of The Rings, The Hobbit, and Avatar. We recommend a 45 minute guided tour through both the Workshop and Weta Cave.

Lake Taupo to Tongariro National Park

This morning we’ll head to the iconic Tongariro National Park for an adventurous couple of days. On arrival at the park, we’ll receive a safety briefing for our canoe tour along the Whanganui River, part of one of New Zealand’s Great Walks. Whanganui National Park is covered in lush native forest with the Whanganui River flowing through the heart of it, and this is where you’ll be canoeing today. The river is rich with Maori and European history, the largest reminder of which is the famous ‘Bridge to Nowhere’. Paddling downstream you’ll see waterfalls, spectacular sheer gorges and farmland - views for days!

Tongariro National Park

Limber up! Today you get the chance to tick off one of the most popular hikes in New Zealand, the epic Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Considered one of the world’s top one-day walks, this 19 km hike takes you across a rocky plateau with dramatic volcanic peaks, craters and turquoise lakes that you (and your Instagram feed) will remember for a lifetime. The Crossing is open to walk year-round (alpine gear and guide are required in winter), but it is subject to the weather conditions. If the weather prevents you from doing the Crossing, there are other awesome short-walks in the area. Tonight, unwind after a big day in your chalet.

Tongariro National Park to Wellington

Onwards to Wellington, the ‘coolest little capital in the world’! Wellington packs a lot of character into its downtown district, with great restaurants and bars along Cuba Street and Courtenay Place. Fill your afternoon by browsing through the exhibits at Te Papa National Museum, grab a craft beer at a brewery, climb to the top of Mt Victoria for panoramic views or take a stroll along the waterfront and Oriental Parade. Oh and, most importantly for the coffee lovers, you’ll be glad to know that Wellington’s coffee culture and cafe scene is considered one of the best in NZ.

Depart Wellington

Today your adventure comes to an end. Say goodbye to your guide and your new Stray mates, we hope you had a great time and we look forward to adventuring with you again in the future!

Enjoy an Auckland to Wellington Drive with These Stops

Auckland to Wellington drive itinerary-the ultimate New Zealand road trip

Auckland New Zealand greets nearly 4 million visitors annually. Some stay in the city, but more come to explore the lush green countryside. An Auckland to Wellington drive is the best way to discover many of the New Zealand North Island attractions and a few secrets. There are enchanting gardens, bubbling earth, geysers, volcanos, museums, clever cafés, huge corrugated iron animals, hobbit holes, and even a spring that produces most of the country’s drinking water.

Sure, you can fly to the major cities, but what you miss along the way is the magic. It’s this exploration that makes New Zealand so special.

I remember the first time we took the Auckland to Wellington drive. We had one stop for food, a second for the toilet, and eight hours later, we arrived in New Zealand’s capital city, barely speaking to each other.

Now, I look forward to the adventure. We have done the research and made the stops. What was once a too-long, somewhat boring Auckland to Wellington drive is now an exciting New Zealand road trip.

Rural New Zealand is one charming small town after the next. We took two days to get from Auckland to Wellington and more to return. If you are ready to self-drive in New Zealand, read on.

Karangahake Gorge

Matamata (hobbiton), te waihou walkway and blue spring, waitomo glow worm caves, turangi (the halfway stop on an auckland to wellington drive), waiouru: the national army museum, tui brewery, stonehenge aotearoa, new zealand road trip map options, one day auckland to wellington by car, two days from auckland to wellington, three or more days from auckland to wellington, seven to nine days, including four days of driving and return trip from wellington to auckland, practical information about the auckland to wellington drive, other ways to travel from auckland to wellington:, will you take an auckland to wellington drive.

As American expats who have been living in and exploring NZ for over 20 years, we see things from both a local’s perspective and from that of a visitor. Therefore, we understand what it’s like to come here and have things be similar, but not always exactly what we are used to. We share the information on this page from this perspective.

Interesting stops along the Auckland to Wellington road trip

New Zealand’s largest city is home to nearly one-third of the country’s population. I am amongst this crowd. It’s a great place to live or to visit. Whether it is nature, culture, or culinary delights , Auckland never disappoints.

Auckland is also a starting point for many great adventures.

  • To the north, discover  Cape Reinga, the spiritual tip of the North Island .
  • The west coast holds rainforest and black sand beaches .
  • Travelling east, you can choose from the beautiful beaches of the Bay of Plenty ,  Napier (the self-proclaimed art deco capital and main tourist city in the Hawkes Bay region), the rural countryside of Gisborne , and the less travelled (but truly amazing) East Cape .
  • Northeast will take you around the laidback Coromandel peninsula .
  • Driving south, you will pass through all the fascinating destinations on this page on your way to Wellington , the world’s southernmost capital city.

First, let us whet your appetite …

If you like antique shops, then you won’t want to miss Paeroa. However, New Zealand’s antique capital is most famous for producing L&P (an abbreviation for Lemon and Paeroa). Don’t miss the giant L&P bottle near the corner of Normanby and Te Aroha Roads .

The giant L&P bottle in Paeroa New Zealand

Our journey: For us, Paeroa was a coffee and browsing stop as part of our return Wellington to Auckland road trip.

A masterpiece of nature, the Karangahake gorge was an active mine during the gold rush days of the late 1800s. From the old mine shaft tunnels, the miners blasted holes through the cliff face to tip tailings into the gorge below. Today, the holes are “windows” offering dramatic views of the gorge and river. Bring a torch (flashlight) as it is dark inside the tunnels. The Karangahake Windows walk takes about an hour.

Karangahake Gorge in New Zealand is one fo the places to stop when driving Auckland to Wellington by car

Our journey: We stopped at Karangahake Gorge on our return drive from Wellington to Auckland. We chose the 2.5 km Karangahake Windows walk from the many hiking options.

New Zealand’s fourth-largest city is home to the internationally acclaimed Hamilton Gardens as well as the country’s only tea plantation, a zoo, 11 km riverwalk trail along the Waikato River (New Zealand’s longest river), and a tribute to former resident Richard O’Brien (screenplay writer and actor in the Rocky Horror Picture Show ). Despite all that, it is the gardens that draw about one million visitors to Hamilton each year.

One could easily spend a full day (or more) in Hamilton and then head out in the morning. If this is your option, you will need somewhere to stay in Hamilton .

If you have any extra time here, be sure to drive 45 minutes west to visit the coastal community of Raglan .

Hamilton Gardens was our first major stop on the Auckland to Wellington drive in New Zealand

Our journey: We spent half a day in Hamilton, stopping only to visit the gardens, enjoy lunch, and see the Riff Raff Statue (Rocky Horror).

Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings fan flock to Middle Earth. One does not simply walk into Middle Earth. Hobbiton is only available as a guided tour . Home to the last remaining intact set from filming the movies, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

You will be surrounded by the lush green pastures and hobbit holes of the Shire. And while you are there, your guide will share stories and behind-the-scenes secrets. For fans, Hobbiton is a must-see.

Hobbiton Movie Set one of the highlights of any New Zealand travel itinerary

Our journey: We opted not to stop at Hobbiton on our most recent New Zealand North Island road trip.

A creative solution to revitalizing a town, in the late 1980’s Tirau resident Steven Clothier designed and erected huge sculptures in corrugated iron. A great place to stop, stretch your legs, visit craft shops, have a coffee, or just walk around and admire the interesting corrugated creations. Be sure to bring your camera.

Corrugated figures in Tirau, New Zealand

Our journey: We took far too many photos in this tiny town and even picked up a few souvenirs and snacks.

New Zealand exports about 9 million litres of water each year, and nearly 70% of that water comes from the Blue Spring . The walk lets you stretch your legs and brings you to colourful nature at its best. From end to end, the walk is 4.7 km and takes about 90 minutes each way.

The Blue Spring at Te Waihou Walkway, Putaruru, in New Zealand

Note: Access to Blue Spring / Te Waihou Walkway from the Leslie Road end is temporarily closed due to a landslip and rockfall. Access from the Whites Road end is still open. It entails a 9km walk to the Blue Spring and return. Check the official site here for updates .

Our journey: We parked at the Leslie Road end and walked to the spring and back. It was about an hour in total.

The Waitomo Glow Worm Caves are one of the more popular North Island tourist attractions , and while they are between Auckland and Wellington, they are not on the route we are recommending if making a one-way journey. However, they are worth a visit if you have never seen Arachnocampa Luminosa, a glowworm species found exclusively in New Zealand.

Waitomo Glowworm Cave

A destination on its own, Rotorua is a geothermal wonderland filled with things to do and sitting on the geographic fault that created it. Water and earth rich in minerals, Rotorua is the place to rejuvenate. The bubbling earth, rising steam, and colourful mineral elements create a landscape that will keep photographers busy.

It’s a city offering impressive Māori cultural discovery opportunities, as well as being home to the Agrodome, a large working farm open for tours and shows. And if that’s not enough, it’s also home to adventure with opportunities for bungy, luge, zorb, mountain biking, and more.

While you can try to do the highlights in a day, you will miss a lot. We recommend spending at least one night, ideally more. Being fans of 4-star accommodations that are clean, comfortable, and offer a touch of luxury, our favourite place to stay is the Rotorua Novotel Lakeside .

Note: if Rotorua is your final destination, be sure to check out our road trip from Auckland to Rotorua.

Champagne Pool Wai-O-Tapu Rotorua New Zealand

Our journey: We opted to visit Rotorua as a separate New Zealand road trip, but remember, we live in Auckland, so we have more flexibility than visitors.

Lake Taupo is New Zealand’s largest lake and Australasia’s largest freshwater lake. It offers a picturesque, serene setting for sitting in a café. Taupo is also a place for adventure (skydiving and bungy jumping). The lake drains towards the Waikato River. It narrows as it flows over Huka Falls at more than 220,000 litres per second.

There are plenty of free things to do in Taupo .

Huka Falls in Lake Taupo, New Zealand

Turangi is an easy place to spend the night if you are doing a multi-day Auckland to Wellington drive. A town famous for its fly fishing, it is also a base for those who are doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing , as well as for skiers during the winter. This brings plenty of inexpensive, roadside motel-style accommodations, or if you are like us, and prefer something nicer and home-like, check out this list of options in and around Turangi .

Our journey: We spent the night in Turangi.

Standing next to the Tears on Greenstone Memorial ( Roimata Pounamu)  we could feel the history all around us. It is at this spot that all New Zealand army recruits take their oath. Crochet poppies fill the walls. The original request to the community was 1,000 poppies, but handmade poppies kept arriving. The revised goal became 18,166, one for each New Zealand soldier killed in battle. However, the poppies kept coming and well exceeded that goal.

The museum takes us through New Zealand’s interesting military history, both with the UK and Australia. A little-known piece of trivia, the lifelike faces in the displays are created from casts made of museum staff members’ faces.

National Army Museum in Waiouru is a central stop on a New Zealand Travel itinerary from Auckland to Wellington

Our journey: By spending the night about an hour north in Turangi, we arrived at the National Army museum when it opened. We spent the morning at the museum, and then continued on our North Island road trip.

If you love the corrugated iron in Tirau, you won’t want to miss the giant boot welcoming you to Taihape.

Corrugated gumboot in Taihape, New Zealand

Our journey: For us, Taihape was a photo stop.

As you enter the town of Bulls and see their slogan, “a town like no udder” you know it’s time to start paying more attention to the shop names and the road signs. It’s a town with a sense of humour, although I’m not sure it’s a good one. Embracing their town name, the puns are everywhere.

  • The library is Read-A-Bull
  • Town Hall is Social-A-Bull
  • The storage shop is Store-A-Bull
  • A cafe is Delect-A-Bull
  • The carpark is Park-A-Bull
  • Public toilets are Reliev-A-Bull
  • Even the police station sign is Const-A-Bull
  • And a road sign reads, “Family Violence is not Accept-A-Bull.

Finally, we passed one store called “What a Load of Bull.” This is only the tip of the bad pun iceberg.

Our Journey: We only drove slowly through Bulls, taking notes as we passed.

By now, you have earned a coffee break. Just a few minutes after leaving the town of Bulls is the town of Sanson. Here, an old church-turned-cafe offered ‘Heavenly Coffee’ on their sign. The Church Cafe lives up to this standard. The coffee was divine, and the stuffed baked potato was even better.

Church Cafe in Sanson New Zealand

Our journey: We stopped at the Church Cafe for lunch.

Tui, a beer “ irresistible to men “, has been brewed in Mangatainoko since 1889. The secret may be the water from the Mangatainoko River, or it may be the brewing process. A lot has changed for Tui over the years. They have downsized their Mangatainoko facility to the point that it is now a microbrewery, brewing only for that location. The tour and tasting take about an hour.

Whether or not you take a tour, the cafe is outstanding and worth a stop. The food was great, the atmosphere lively, and it was a chance to try some of the beer brewed at this location. If you have too much or just want another overnight stop, check availability on nearby Palmerston North Accommodations

Tui Brewery in New Zealand

Our journey: We opted for a much longer journey and stopped at the Tui Brewery for lunch and a tour as we drove from Wellington to Napier on the east coast.

Did you know there is a stone circle in New Zealand called Stonehenge Aotearoa ? Fascinating on different levels, it represents the history of ancient stone circles combined with their power. It is not a replica of England’s famous Stonehenge but rather a purpose-built structure of similar size to the one in the UK that has been built for its surroundings.

Stonehenge Aotearoa, a stone circle in New Zealand

Our journey: We explored Stonehenge Aotearoa between Wellington and the Tui Brewery.

Finally, our destination. I love New Zealand’s capital city as a getaway destination. Home to the government buildings, it is a lovely waterfront city with plenty of interesting things to do.

Hiking to the summit of Mt. Victoria in Wellington New Zealand

Our journey: We have visited Wellington many times. As part of our recent New Zealand driving holiday, we spent three days in New Zealand’s capital.

  • There is also the Northern Explorer, an Auckland to Wellington train, which won’t save too much time but can be a good option if you don’t have access to a vehicle and don’t want to fly.

I am extremely interested in finding out about the South Island as my wife and I are interested in doing a self drive New Zealand experience. Your post about the North Island is fantastic so am looking forward to seeing your post about the South Island.

Need to get back to NZ and explore more of the North island. We only spent 2 days in Auckland the rest of our time on the South island. Have heard great things and it looks like there’s some great road tripping to be done. Thanks.

I had NO idea there was that much to see between Auckland and Wellington! You have me hooked on Matamata aka Hobbiton!

August 31, 2018 at 5:04 pm

This is such a great resource. New Zealand is high on our list and we love doing road trips around countries. Thanks for all the info!

August 31, 2018 at 10:39 am

Fantastic post Rhonda. I have done this trip a few times and haven’t managed to see all these spots. Next on the list is Turangi. PS one of my good friend’s from London is married to Richard O’Brien’s son and I have heard all about the tribute – it was nice to read about it here too

Wow, what an amazing road trip! I would love to visit the north island for those glow worm caves and hobbiton!

August 31, 2018 at 8:16 am

Clever cafes and hobbit holes sound like a perfect pairing for a road trip… count me in! I used to have Australia above New Zealand for some reason but the scale has tipped and New Zealand is now at the top of my list.

August 30, 2018 at 5:50 pm

So much natural beauty between the two cities! Love the color of the water in Auckland and all of the scenery in the sights on the way

Brilliant itinerary! Have bookmarked this for a future return visit to New Zealand. Can never visit too much — Christchuch was amazing. Auckland super fun. Waitangi Treaty Grounds moving. Last visit there was simply a jumping off to get to Fiji for a sailing adventure back to New Zealand … another adventue unto itself. And always LOVE your photos … a highlight of opening your posts.

I would take the road trip to see all of these than the train or fly over. I’ve seen so many stunning photos of Auckland and Wellington but not with all of these spots you visited. It’s my first to see waitomo glow worms cave so spectacular. I’d take the route the same way you did just to see this waitomo glow worms.

August 30, 2018 at 7:35 am

Awesome road trip! I’d love to do this someday especially to see Hobbiton. So cool!

August 30, 2018 at 6:27 am

These are great suggestions!! If i did this drive i would totally stop in hobbiton!! That is a bucketlist item for me and something i can’t wait to do!

August 30, 2018 at 6:05 am

This post brings back so many wonderful memories! I used to be a tour guide in New Zealand and many of these stops were on my tour route. I had my first skydive at Lake Taupo, my first dip in natural hotsprings in Rotorua and my first spelunking experience in the glow worm caves of Waitomo 😍 Somehow I never made it to Hobbiton… I guess it’s a good enough excuse to go back !

August 30, 2018 at 12:27 pm

Hobbiton is quite a bit more commercial than any of the places you mentioned, but yes, it is a good excuse to come back – if you need an exchuse.

That East Cape is eye-popping! The homeowner took us for a ride from Opotiki. 3 hours of stunning views and quite an intense ride too. We loved Wellington. Different feel to it, as the place was somewhat similar to San Francisco. Chill, low-key, neat buildings and a hilly terrain too. Will not forget the flight in; those were some strong winds, fitting for the Windiest City on Earth.

August 30, 2018 at 12:25 pm

I agree, I love the East Cape, and even though we added it into our personal around the North Island itinerary, it’s not part of the one on this page.

August 29, 2018 at 6:50 pm

I’ve been wanting to visit New Zealand for the longest time and your photos clearly show that I must plan a visit soon! I like that you showed your itinerary. It will definitely help when I plan my trip. Thanks for sharing

A road trip between Auckland and Wellington is a great way to explore the North Island.

The Auckland to Welling road trip indeed has all the trappings of an epic trip. The stops have something unique to offer. So many places, I am sure one would never feel the drive to be long or tedious. Some of my favourite and must visit places here would be Hobbiton, Stonehenge, and Rotorua, these places look spectacular, I am sure the experiences are to be cherished for a long, long time.

You did pick some of the best spots, although the Army museum caught me by surprise, being far more interesting than I expected.

June 3, 2021 at 5:38 pm

if you’re just driving one-way, i suggest to do it from wellington to auckland because the rental car is almost free. i only paid $3 for an suv and it stayed with us for 3 days. i think it’s because you are returning it to auckland for the company since most people rent a car headed south. 🙂

August 29, 2018 at 7:28 am

Funnily enough, I was just looking into visiting NZ one day and then I came across your blog. NZ looks like a beautiful country, so doing this road trip is certainly the best way to explore the country. I like how many details you provide to the visitors. Thank you for all the ideas!

August 29, 2018 at 10:09 pm

Yes, New Zealand is beautiful. There is a lot more to New Zealand than just this portion of the North Island. Many of the most beautiful spots are on the South Island.

August 29, 2018 at 4:39 am

Wow, I can’t believe there is all of this to see between the two cities! Or that you did the whole drive with just one toilet stop the first time! The glow worm caves look amazing, as you say actually there is more here than on a simple road trip – this is a whole holiday in itself! Hobbiton is definitely on my list, after getting a taste of hobbit houses in Guatemala I really want to see the ‘real’ thing!

August 29, 2018 at 5:07 am

Remember, when we did the whole thing in on go, we didn’t make any other stops, so it was eight solid hours of driving.

Just to let you know Rhonda, I may no longer be able to write my blog. This thing called widget took over my blog and I can’t get into my blog. I’ve had some friends try to help but to no avail. But I’ll still be able to check on you. You won’t be able to get rid of that easy. LOL See ya.

I hope you get a chance to visit New Zealand

August 28, 2018 at 10:11 am

I would love to visit the Te Waihou Walkway and Blue Spring. I also had no idea NZ exported so much water from this Blue Spring. And the tea plantation and garden looks like a great place to explore too 🙂

The exportation of water has become a political thing lately. I am not sure it will continue forever.

What a fab tour Rhonda the Corrugated figures in Tirau made me smile heheh!

Have a tanfastic week 🙂

August 28, 2018 at 6:23 pm

They made me smile too, and I only shared the dog and sheep. They are everywhere in the town.

August 28, 2018 at 1:20 am

Wow, what a trip. Every time you show me great pictures of New Zealand, I just want to go. See ya Rhonda.

August 28, 2018 at 5:22 am

One day Paul, I will have you convinced. There are ships that come here. In fact, we are sailing from LA to Auckland next month.

August 27, 2018 at 11:14 pm

New zealand is really a fab place for a road trip. We drove from Auckland to Wellington stopping at Rotorua and Lake Taupo on the way, but your fab post and different itinerary suggestions made me realise there is so much more to see and do!

August 28, 2018 at 5:20 am

I think you did what many people do. Next time perhaps you will choose a different way.

August 27, 2018 at 9:10 pm

I wish I had this post about six years ago when I made this exact drive! Of the places you mentioned, I went to Waitomo, Taupo, and Rotorua. This is still one of my favorite trips of all time.

August 28, 2018 at 5:19 am

Same here, I wish we had done the research and made the interesting drive years ago. We have just gone straight through too many times.

August 27, 2018 at 9:05 pm

Ooh the Karangahake gorge looks amazing. I haven’t yet made it over to New Zealand, not through lack of wanting to, but a few more places to tick off first (Sri Lanka is next). I never knew there was a stone henge in New Zealand, that’s bizarre and amazing in equal measure!

August 28, 2018 at 5:18 am

For a tiny little country, New Zealand really packs in quite a bit. As for Karangahake, check out more of my images here: Karangahake Gorge Walks: Windows out of Old Gold Mines

Hamiliton looks and sounds like a great place to stop! Everything on her does, to be honest! I can imagine that NZ is like living in a fantasy world because everything looks awesome!!

August 28, 2018 at 5:17 am

LOL – it did seem a bit like a fantasy world when we first moved here 16 years ago, now it’s just the fabulous place that we live.

August 27, 2018 at 7:34 pm

Wow. So many great options on the trip to choose from. Would love to do Taihape and Stonehenge ? replica. The variety on the trail seems amazing. Thanks for sharing!

August 28, 2018 at 5:16 am

Exactly right, the variety is amazing, and if you allocated enough time you can do it all. The Stonehenge is not a replica, but rather a purpose-built stone circle. You can read about it here: Stonehenge Aotearoa: New Zealand’s Powerful Stone Circle

Who doesn’t love a good road trip? New Zealand sounds like a great place to see some quirky sights. I love all the names of places in the town of Bulls. I also like the corrugated tin artwork, for I have never quite seen that. The blue waterfall at Taupo looks amazing? Are there many hot springs to visit in New Zealand?

August 27, 2018 at 6:03 am

The geothermal region of Rotorua, Taupo and everywhere in the middle is filled with hotsprings, plus there are some on the South Island.

August 27, 2018 at 2:26 am

New Zealand has such a wonderful nature. Waitomo Glow Worms Cave looks absolutely stunning! I´ve also heard that the most charming places are in between, would love to do the drive. Thanks for the Wanderlust!

August 27, 2018 at 6:01 am

It’s very true, New Zealand is filled with charming little hide-a-ways and hidden secrets.

August 26, 2018 at 10:41 pm

I did the trip in two legs, by bus, and it was amazing, even though I wasn’t able to stop wherever I wanted to. Could easily have done it again, but this time at my own pace 🙂

August 27, 2018 at 6:00 am

Where did you stop along the way?

August 24, 2018 at 12:55 pm

Hi Rhonda – I’d be out and about and probably take longer … in the old days I’d have whizzed through … but one misses so much. They all look quite delightful … and I’d love to do the trip – cheers Hilary

August 24, 2018 at 10:53 pm

We are the same, we used to drive straight through, now we take our time and enjoy.

I’m not much of a city person, so I’d be out in the country side soaking up the wide open spaces.

Great photography as always.

Have a fabulous day, Rhonda. ♥

I am a bit of both. I love the city, but also love the escape the rural areas.

Auckland to Wellington 7 Day Highlights - Day 4

This drive will take you through the thermal region just south of Rotorua. Home to a plethora of unique geothermal attractions including boiling mud pits, natural hot springs and steaming geysers, this area is a must do before you move on to Napier. Notable attractions are Wai-O-Tapu , Waimangu and Craters of the Moon . Continue on to Taupo and marvel at the lake, a giant crater formed following a volcanic eruption in the year 180 CE. As you approach the city, be sure to stop at Huka Falls to view the spectacular sight of hundreds of cubic metres of water spilling every second down the narrow 11 metre drop. For an extra thrill take a jet-boat ride to the base of the falls. Leaving Taupo, follow the road as it climbs the rugged Ahimanawa Range before descending back down the Pacific Coast to art deco Napier.

The Huka Jet is 30 minutes of pure fun and exhilaration, skimming close to cliffs, sliding past trees, feeling the adrenalin of full 360 degree spins. The excitement continues right up to the base of the foaming Huka Falls, where you get a spectacular water level view to New Zealand's most visited natural attraction. Nothing compares to watching 220,000 litres per second tumbling over the cliff face towards you. The water from the mighty Huka Falls runs down the Waikato River through a series of Hydro Power Stations. You'll get a view of the Wairakei Geothermal Power Station in the comfort of a powerful Chevrolet V8 jet boat. This unique Geothermal Power Station uses underground geothermal activity to produce hot steamy water. The Waikato Rivers beautiful environment is varied and unique and is New Zealand's longest river flowing north from our largest lake, Lake Taupō.

The National Aquarium of New Zealand stretches along Napier’s Marine Parade.  It's home to a wide range of saltwater, freshwater, and land animal exhibits from New Zealand and around the world. Experience, stingrays, living coral, a huge range of fish species, and native wildlife. Visit Penguin Cove and watch the little penguins swim, feed and play. Auckland to Wellington 7 Day Highlights - Day 5

With its Mediterranean climate and Art Deco style, Hawke's Bay is an attractive holiday prospect. As the nation's first winemaking region, a visit to one of its 30 wineries is a must. A trip to Mission Estate touted as the birthplace of NZ wine can't be missed. For the truly enthused head out on a tour of the vines. Those into Gatsby will enjoy the chance to view prominent Art Deco landmarks on a 1930s Vintage Car Tour. Passengers will spend just over an hour learning about the history of the city's architecture including the Napier Municipal Theatre, one of the top ten Art Deco Buildings in the world. If you're after some fresh air, hire a bike and take your pick of one of over 200km of cycling trails or head on down to one of the many beaches that ring the area. Ocean or Waimarama beach are good choices and both are patrolled by surf lifeguards during the summer. Indulge in some local produce and head out on a cheese, chocolate, honey or orchard tour. End on a high with another ride, this time in a comfortable trailer pulled by a tractor en-route to Cape Kidnappers Gannet Colony, the largest of its kind in the world.

Drive along the scenic coast from Napier to Te Awanga and join Gannet Safaris Overland and the world's largest, most accessible gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers. Gannet Safaris has been guiding visitors over Cape Kidnappers for over 35 years and their safaris are the only way to be driven right to within a few feet of these remarkable birds. You will travel in comfort in air-conditioned 4 x 4 wheeled vehicles, through Cape Kidnappers Station - traversing riverbeds, broad rolling pastures, stands of native bush, steep gullies and breath-taking inclines. There is a stop on the way at a spectacular cliff top with panoramic views of Hawke Bay right across to Mahia peninsular. The 36km, three hour trip includes a commentary by your tour guide/driver on the farming operation on Cape Kidnappers Station and an introduction to the gannets. On arrival at the gannets you can stretch your legs and take in the scenery from your position at the brink of the cliff's edge, 100 metres above the ocean!

Experience a fun-filled Grape Escape wine and dine tour in the sun driving through absolutely stunning scenery. Meet like-minded people and share an appreciation of this region's fantastic wine. We visit four to five boutique wineries. Later, we enjoy a light cheese platter on the grounds of Ngatarawa or Sileni, weather dependent. You will taste around 30 different wines along with the main varieties, including Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Viognier, and lesser-known aromatics such as Cabernet Franc, Gewurztraminer, and Riesling.

Auckland to Wellington 7 Day Highlights - Day 6

As you leave the rolling countryside of the Hawke's Bay you'll be greeted with some of the country's richest dairy farmland in the Manawatu Gorge. Continue on through the Wairarapa region and stop in the Pukaha Mount Bruce Wildlife Centre, where you can see some of New Zealand native animals. Take another break in Masterson, and visit the interactive Woolshed Museum to learn about sheep farming in New Zealand. As you drive south, a visit to historic Greytown is a must-do. Take in the restored Victorian buildings and make time for a cup of tea at one of its quaint cafes. Leaving state highway 2 you will cross over the Ruamahanga River into Martinborough wine country your destination for the day.

Visit wonderful vineyards such as Te Kairangi Wines, Tirohana Estate, Cabbage Tree Vineyard and Martinborough Vineyard on this half day tour of the premium wine region of Martinborough. Taste the wines, learn about the development of the region, its people and characters from knowledgeable guides.

Auckland to Wellington 7 Day Highlights - Day 7

Foo Fighters Auckland: Everything you need to know - transport, parking and show times

T he last time Foo Fighters took to the stage in Aotearoa was at Auckland’s Mt Smart Stadium in 2018, it was pouring with rain, and the late Taylor Hawkins got two drum solos .

Now the 15-time Grammy-winning band are mere hours away from touching down in New Zealand without their beloved drummer for the first time. It’s bittersweet but welcome news for long-time Kiwi fans who have waited six years to see them perform live again.

Following a run of successful shows in Australia - including an almightily powerful rock sermon in Melbourne , the band will play in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington this January, with the first show taking place on Saturday, January 20, with their new drummer Josh Freese .

If you’re yet to secure tickets, it’s not too late. All three shows still have tickets available through Ticketmaster .

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the shows:

When does it start?

Auckland: For all the Foo lovers heading along to the show at Auckland’s Go Media Mt Smart Stadium on January 20, gates open at 4.30pm so you can get in, get settled and get ready for a night of rock.

The show is scheduled to start at 5.30pm with support acts Dick Move and The Breeders each playing a set before the Foo Fighters come on.

Christchurch: If you’re heading along to Orangetheory Stadium on January 24 for the highly anticipated show, gates open at 4pm with the show set to start slightly earlier than Auckland at 5pm.

After the support acts play, the Grammy winners will take the stage.

Wellington: For those going to the band’s last, but certainly not least, New Zealand show at Wellington’s Sky Stadium on January 27, doors open at 4.15pm with the show starting at 5.30pm.

Parking and transport

Drive and park: Unfortunately for those wanting to drive, there is no official car park at the Go Media Mt Smart Stadium and there will be multiple road closures around the area so it may be easier to walk, cycle or use public transport for this gig.

Bus: Both event and everyday bus services will be running on concert day and are included in your event ticket from 2.15pm until the end of service that day. Simply show your ticket to the driver when boarding, and remember to keep your ticket for the journey home.

Train: All train lines will be running, but Auckland Transport has warned that, for the Southern and Western Lines, buses will replace trains between Waitematā Station (Britomart) and Newmarket.

For the Eastern Line, there will be buses replacing the trains between Waitematā Station (Britomart) and The Strand. And for the Onehunga Line, buses will replace trains between Penrose and Onehunga from 9.30pm until the end of the day.

Check here for more details about parking and transport options.

Christchurch: Parking is very limited in and around the stadium, but you can try pre-purchasing a space here . Entry is via Wrights Rd only or try parking at The CDHB Park n Ride at 25 Deans Ave and walk the 25 minutes to the stadium.

As it stands, there is no update on public transport plans for the concert.

Wellington: For those heading along to the Wellington show, parking for Sky Stadium is on sale now through Ticketek for the cost of $39 online (credit card fees apply) - it’s advisable to pre-purchase to make sure you don’t miss out.

There are also multiple Wilson carparks close to the venue and some street parking.

What to take - and what to leave at home

Auckland: While you aren’t allowed to bring in commercially prepared foods such as takeaways and soft drinks, alcohol or illicit drugs, furniture, chairs or stools or video cameras and recording devices such as drones, iPads, tablets or Go Pros, you are allowed to bring banners, flags and posters, picnic mats and a small bag that can fit under your seat.

Here is a full list of items you can and can’t bring into Go Media Mt Smart Stadium.

Christchurch: Like most stadiums, there are plenty of restrictions around what you can and can’t bring in, including alcohol, illicit drugs and large bags. Here is a full list of items you can and can’t bring into Orangetheory Stadium.

Wellington: Bags no larger than A4 in size (30cm x 21cm x 21cm) will be permitted for the concert, neither will alcohol or illicit drugs, gang patches and gang paraphernalia and drones and other flying devices. Here is a full list of items you can and can’t bring into Sky Stadium.

Auckland: It’s not looking too bad of a day for Aucklanders heading along to the concert, with MetService predicting a high of 28C, low of 19C and clouds with a chance of showers and some northeasterlies.

Christchurch: MetService is currently predicting a high of 17C and low of 9C for the concert day, with rain clearing to partly cloudy weather and northeasterlies - but, as we know, the weather is always changing so check back here for updates.

Wellington: It’s too soon to tell what the weather will be doing on January 27 so check back here closer to the time for details.

An official set list has not yet been released for the show. However, based on their last show as part of the tour, in Brisbane on December 12, it might look a bit like this:

Jack Black covers AC/DC with Foo Fighters in Auckland in surprise reunion gig moment

Hollywood actor Jack Black has surprised thousands at the Foo Fighters' first New Zealand show of 2024 by appearing on stage to sing an AC/DC classic on Saturday night.

Black, who is in Auckland to film the new Minecraft movie along with Jason Momoa and Jennifer Coolidge, was introduced by Foo Fighters' lead singer Dave Grohl after he announced they couldn't leave without playing an AC/DC classic.

However, Grohl told the crowd at Go Media Mt Smart Stadium that he wouldn't sing the song - seconds later, Black, complete with a pounamu around his neck, came bounding on to the stage.

He then sang the 1976 song 'Big Balls' before ending his time on stage doing a forward roll into the crowd.

More from Newshub

Earlier in the show, Grohl had been reliving his memories of touring New Zealand with Tenacious D, mentioning how "seismic" their show had been with the band at Auckland's Western Springs in 2011.

Footage of Black's appearance quickly spread on social media, with many fans stunned at his shock performance.

"Foo Fighters bringing out Jack Black to sing an ACDC song about having massive balls was definitely not on my 2024 bingo list," one wrote on social media.

"Omg, Jack Black is here too," another wrote.

"Epicness," another declared on X (formerly known as Twitter.)

"Jack black just sang at the foo fighters concert here in Auckland, what the," another commented.

The Foo Fighters have kicked off a series of three concerts in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, marking their first dates in Aotearoa with  new drummer Josh Freese.

It is the  Foo Fighters' first headline tour  of New Zealand since 2018 after they had announced a series of shows for 2022.

The gigs, which had been previously planned for December 2022, had been cancelled after the death of Taylor Hawkins in March 2022.

The band will next play Christchurch on Wednesday, January 24.

The New Zealand leg of their current Australasian tour will end in Wellington at the Sky Stadium on Saturday, January 27.
