Mumbai

Priyadarshini Park and Sports Complex is a clean and well-maintained sea-facing attraction in South Mumbai. Located in one of the sophisticated localities, this Napeansea Road park overlooks many expensive apartments on the street. Every nook and corner of this 20 acres land has now become a powerhouse to keep the heart of Mumbai pumping. For more than 3 decades, this wonderland has served as a recreational site, and sports and fitness complex. Visit here early in the morning to witness the magic of this refuge for the inhabitants of Mumbai.  Also, Mumbaikars do not forget to visit here in the early monsoons to sit on its sea-facing end and seek a delight with the sound of soothing waves. Once, this piece of land was merely a rocky patch of the coastal area of Malabar. What you see today is a gorgeous lush green garden lined up with a total of 600+ coconut trees. With a perfect and well-maintained ambiance, this park is a boon for early morning yoga, jogging, walking, aerobics, and so on. The credit, of course, goes to its active group – the Malabar Hill Citizen Forum, who looks after it as its own child. You can connect with their authorities to be an annual member of the plethora of recreational sports activities that they organize. In addition to pumping the adrenaline of youth with its recreational touch, Priyadarshini Park of Mumbai also serves as an ideal family outing location and a lover’s point. If you are fortunate enough, you may even witness little squirrels accompanying you here for some pleasing views.

Taraporewala Aquarium

This sightseeing place in Mumbai is one of the largest aquariums in the city of Mumbai. Situated in Marine Drive, this aquarium was founded by D. B. Taraporewala, a Parsi philanthropist, in the year 1951. The aquarium has a twelve feet long three-sixty degrees glass tunnel that holds interesting marine life. There are several species of fish here, such as damselfish, butterfly fish, tiger fish, angelfish, moss, sea urchins, sea cucumber, marine eels, etc

Babulnath

Whenever you are visiting Mumbai, Babulnath Shiva temple is a must-visit for inner peace and tranquillity. It is one of the oldest temples in Mumbai, which increases its importance in the eyes of the loyal devotees. Its walls are specially carved with limestone that depicts the Hindu mythology, which travellers find it exciting at the first look. At this temple, the beautiful marble flooring is specially brought down from Rajasthan. Thus, each step you take inside this temple feels royal and enchanting along with the daily devotees you can meet and greet, dressed in Indian attires. So, every moment spent in this temple is blissful with internal peace and devotion. Moreover, you can witness devotees from different corners of the world who love to pay their tribute to Lord Shiva and other idols.Once you enter the holy temple revered by so many Hindus and locals, you can find sculptures and idols of Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman, and Nandi with Kashyap. We would also advise you to buy a basket outside the temple steps before entering. This basket will bring joy, happiness and fulfil all your wishes once you pay your heartfelt worship to Shiva and other lords like Durga Mata and Goddess Parvati at the centre of this temple.  If you have any doubts regarding the same, you can always ask devotees around you or the priest to know how to get the prayer done with the basket that you buy.On the other hand, idols of Goddess Parvati and Durga Mata are respectfully placed in the centre of this temple. What’s even more special about this temple is that around 4 times a day, prayers for Lord Shiva are recited here. This temple gets approximately a lakh devotees for Darshan during the Mahashivratri. The whole scenario is a sight to behold and capture in your hearts to narrate stories about back home.

Published On Apr 26, 2023 | Updated On Mar 08, 2024

Image

Commonly referred to as the ‘Queen of Suburbs’, Bandra is one of Mumbai's most energetic neighbourhoods. With its busy streets, hip cafes, and well-known sites, it is an area tourists and locals enjoy equally. If you ever find yourself in Bandra, there are many places to go to and things to do. From catching a film or a show to drinking and dining at the trendiest spaces. Get ready to explore Mumbai’s swankiest suburb.

Things to do in Bandra

1. visit bandra fort.

Image

If you’re a Bollywood buff, you’ll already have a list of movies that were shot at the iconic Bandra Fort. Castella de Aguada, better known as Bandra Fort, is a from the 17th century when the Portuguese had their hold on Mumbai. With fantastic views of the Arabian Sea and the Bandra-Worli Sealink, the ruins of the fort allow for a comfortable place to sit. The Portuguese constructed this fort in 1640 as a watchtower to keep an eye on the neighbourhood. Today, the steps pose as great seats for an amphitheatre. With some moss on the walls around and nooks to rest and read, Bandra Fort should be on your list of things to do in Bandra.

2. Explore heritage villages

Can you imagine rice paddy fields in Bandra? With all the chaos, it’s hard to. But Bandra’s villages were built around rice paddy fields. And, exploring these villages is the best way to get to know the suburb’s history. Walk around Ranwar and Chium village and take in the sights of the beautiful Goan-Portuguese bungalows around. Mostly occupied by the East Indian Catholic community, the villages are a fine example of how Mumbai is trying its best to preserve its heritage. If you’re a history buff and want to know more, sign up for one of the many heritage walks hosted by different walking groups in the city. It’s definitely a fun thing to do in Bandra whether you’re a tourist or a local.

3. Sit or walk by the sea

Image

What is a key thing to do in Bandra? Grab some sea views, of course! Offering beautiful and well-kept promenades like Carter Road and Bandstand, Bandra is where you can go for a stroll by the sea. Perhaps, you’d prefer to sit here and do nothing but stare at the horizon. One of the oldest churches in Mumbai; paying a visit to Mount Mary is definitely a thing to do in Bandra. One of the most sacred places, the church was constructed in the 16th century and is well-known for the annual Mount Mary fair. As it sits on a hill, the view of the sea is spectacular and the church has become a popular place in Bandra among tourists.

While the suburb may not play host to too many traditional places, the trendiest cafes almost always open shop here. That’s why one of the things to do in Bandra is to try one or more popular cafes. We recommend sipping on coffee at Subko before heading to Veronica’s to grab a sandwich. If you’re looking for crepes, head to Cafe Condi or dig into vegetarian fare at The Yoga House. If bagels are more your style, grab them at The Bagel Shop.

A Bandra walking itinerary

bandra tourist places

Mumbai forms an intrinsic backdrop to most of my books and stories. I describe in extensive detail what I love about this city, which is pretty much everything; the diversity, the local quirks, the effortlessly hip crowd, the mish-mash tiny houses, the exasperating heat, the torrential rains, the typical daily rigour. Yeah, even those.

And then, in all that, is the tiny gem of Bandra —the queen of Mumbai’s suburbs. Here the stereotypical Indian contrasts are stark: the opulent and the decaying, the migrant and the nouveau riche, the hip and the traditional; the differences stand out more harshly than anywhere else in the city.

Bandra is also where I live.

Bandra is also what I love.

Here are a few great things you can do on your free morning in Bandra. An easy Bandra walking itinerary.

—There are easier ways to see Bandra. Through these walking tours—

Start by the sea

At Reclamation, or Bandstand, or Carter Road

Bandra is a diverse, dynamic and thriving. Something new is happening here every hour, in every street. But it’s also cosmopolitan, and chaotic, and in its very noisy squalor, people are forever looking for peace. And the best time to find it is at sunrise every morning, the only time when I think there is any semblance of calm in an otherwise frenzied city.

There are plenty of places to catch the sunrise in all its glory in Bandra, the primary being— Carter Road, Bandstand, and Bandra Fort —but my favourite is at Reclamation . The stretch is relatively less crowded and a great place to sit with a cup of chai and in deep contemplation. It’s also a worthy vantage point to people-watch—flirty couples hiding from the family eye, the middle-aged health-conscious, old gossip groups, serious runners, and those who’ve come to steal a few seconds of elusive calm, like this one below.

Bandra itinerary

Walk along quaint mini-villages

From Reclamation I usually walk down to Mt Carmel Road, and then to Chapel Road and Ranwar Village . The parallel sets of roads that connect Bandra Reclamation to Hill Road are decrepitly gorgeous. Walking through the heritage villages around here forms an indelible and highly anticipated part of our Bandra lives. I never miss a chance, although traffic can be prohibitive. Still, brave it you must.

Chapel Road Bandra itinerary

Ranwar Village , in particular, dates back to the early eighteenth century. Many of the houses here are centuries old, built in the typical Indo-Portuguese-Colonial style with large wooden porches, external staircases, pointed roofs, and expansive balconies. And as you walk in the village’s narrow winding lanes, you’ll find a slice of old town sandwiched within the new: people conversing across verandahs, women combing their hair whilst lamenting about the traffic below in their typical Bandra English, men gathering around for a cup of tea and idle chatter, home shops selling bombil pickle or Goan Pork sorpotel , tiny lamps and fairy doilies on rusty grilled windows: it’s all quite magical.

Chapel Road Bandra itinerary

Go to mass at St Andrew’s Church

My typical feel-good Sunday comprises walking past Chapel Road, through Veronica Road or Waroda Road , on to Mehboob Studio and finishing at the centuries-old St Andrews Church for the morning mass.

Bandra itinerary | Chapel Road

St. Andrew’s Church is one of the oldest churches in Mumbai. It was built by the Portuguese Jesuits in the year 1575.

In 1534, the island of Salsette of which Bandra was a part, came under Portuguese rule. Brother Manual Gomes, a Portuguese missionary, also known as the apostle of Salsette, arrived soon after. In subsequent years, he managed to convert several locals, also laying the foundation of about 8 churches in the area.

Much of Bandra is even today, Catholic.

Read more on the church and its history here . If you can catch a wedding or baptism ceremony at St. Andrews, the better. There’s always something going on.

Eat at a local cafe

Post the Sunday walk, I’m usually ravished and I pack in a bun maska-chai (sweet butter bread and tea) at Good Luck café or walk back to partake in a sumptuous continental breakfast at Candies , another popular Bandra café located both at Reclamation and Pali Hill.

best cafes in Bandra | Candies

At the end of Veronica Road is the delightful Veronica’s. It resides within the premises of the former St. Jude Bakery which was known for large-scale baking for the suburbs and has been a landmark in Bandra for years. Unlike the other places in Bandra, which are mostly all pomp and show with little to offer in terms of food, Veronica’s has great food accompanied by great coffee. Not surprising, as it’s run by the folks behind another favourite of mine, Bombay Canteen. However, Veronica’s is tiny and the queues are long, and I’m hoping that will abate over time or that they will expand.

For more cafe suggestions, head over to a detailed Bandra itinerary here .

People (star!) watch

People flock every day outside Galaxy Towers to spot Salman Khan or outside Mannat for a peek at Shah Rukh Khan, but you can probably spot a star or starlet at a vegan cafe or a fancy brunch place in Bandra.  Hakkasan is the stars’ favourite, as is Olive Bar and Kitchen.  A few more Bollywood favourites can be found here .

Of course, it’s not all hunky-dory, not all beauty and charm in Bandra. To the foreign eye, the dirt, the squalor, and the migrant poverty stand out in deep and uncomfortable contrast to the Bollywood glitz, the middle-class glamour, the yoga-Pilates studios, the plush pubs, the artsy and hippie crowds. But in Bandra, we try and embrace life in all its vagaries, occasionally attempting to enhance it but at the very least, trying to love it as best we can.

Where to stay in Bandra as a tourist

I recommend Bandra as the ideal base for a tourist in Mumbai. It is central, has great restaurants, cafes and options for entertainment, and is great for shopping and people watching too. It has a unique mish-mash of old and new Mumbai which will give you a quick overview of the city.

High-end (USD 180-250)

Taj Lands End

Best things to do in Mumbai solo

Located at the end of Bandstand, and close to the Bandra Fort, this is the place to stay if you can cough up some dough. The top floors also provide a great view of the sea. The cafes and in-house restaurants are top-end, where occasionally you might glimpse the odd Bollywood Star making a star-studded entry to discuss her next movie.

Bloom Boutique

While located in an expensive part of Bandra-Khar, the location of Bloom Boutique (Formerly Executive Enclave) is not my favourite because of the narrow roads and slums close by, but the rooms and service itself are quite top-notch.

Low-mid range (USD 20-40)

Horn Ok Please

A quirky hostel in a cool part of Bandra which primarily provides dorms and one private room. The hostel is relatively new but wears all the colours of Bandra already.

Looking for a slow morning in the old part of Mumbai instead? Go over to an account of the popular Shantaram tour .

The 8 Top Things to Do in Bandra West, Mumbai

bandra tourist places

Bandra West is often referred to as the "Queen of the Suburbs" in Mumbai . The lure of international influences and liberal attitudes has drawn droves of celebrities, models, musicians, hipsters, and expats to this multi-faceted neighborhood. In turn, a steady stream of stylish new restaurants, bars, and boutiques has opened to cater to their cosmopolitan lifestyle. These top things to do in Bandra West incorporate both the neighborhood's history and current trends.

Trace Bandra's Heritage

One of the defining characteristics of Bandra West is its pervasive Portuguese heritage. Bandra was settled by the Portuguese in 1534 when it was a simple fishing village, and it remained part of their territory even after the Bombay Islands were transferred to the British in 1661. During their occupation of the area, the Portuguese built many churches and converted thousands of locals to Catholicism. Some old villages and stately Portuguese ancestral homes still remain amid the increasing urbanization. These include Chimbai fishing village, and artsy 400-year-old Ranwar village. Take an informative guided walking tour through the neighborhood, such as this one offered by Raconteur Walks .

Admire the Street Art

The lanes in the vicinity of Ranwar village have recently become renowned for their quirky street art created by artists from all over the world. Most of it can be found on and around Waroda Road, Chapel Road, and Saint Veronica Road up to Mount Carmel Church in Bandra West. The most prominent murals on Chapel Road are the work of the Bollywood Art Project. There are also massive murals of Bollywood actors Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna on the corner of Bandstand and Pereira Road. Wandertrails conducts guided 2-hour walking tours of the street art.

Visit Bandra Fort and Bandstand

TripSavvy / Gautier Houba

Tucked away on the tip of Bandra West are the remains of a 17th century fort that was built by the Portuguese as a watchtower. It was strategically located to look out over Mahim Bay but now provides an excellent vantage point for viewing the landmark Bandra-Worli Sea Link bridge. Not far away, behind an imposing set of gates before the luxury Taj Lands End hotel, is the home of the "King of Bollywood" Shah Rukh Khan. Called Mannat (meaning wish or prayer), it's a sprawling palatial six-floor mansion.

Stroll Along Bandstand and Carter Road Promenades

TripSavvy / Shraddha Gosavi

Bandra West borders the Arabian Sea and you can join locals for an evening stroll by the long stretches of oceanfront past celebrity residences. The neighborhood has two promenades, one extending from Bandstand and the other further north along Carter Road. Recent urban development projects have added improved facilities such as amphitheaters, parks, and children's playgrounds.

Go Shopping

Bargain hunters definitely won't be disappointed by Bandra West. Linking Road is lined with stalls selling cheap shoes, bags, clothing, and accessories. Make sure you haggle hard to get a good price ! The neighborhood also has boutiques that are worth browsing through. Go to Anokhi for gorgeous block-print textiles, Kulture Shop for groovy products by Indian graphic designers, OMO for funky Indian attire, and The Shop for boho-chic fashion and home decor.

Explore the Food Scene

Bandra West is a foodie's delight ! Over the last decade, the neighborhood has flourished into one of the most talked about dining destinations in Mumbai. Don't expect a lot of traditional Indian fare though. In line with Bandra's trendiness, most of the restaurants and cafes concentrate on contemporary cuisine. One new exception is Ferry Wharf , which serves Mangalorean seafood just the way you'd get it in south India. Hang out with creative-types at The Bagel Shop, eat organic at Birdsong, try Indian dishes with a twist at Pali Bhavan, feast on seafood with an Asian spin at Bastian, and have a European meal at cool Pali Village Cafe . Don't miss sampling gourmet teas at the Taj Mahal Tea House.

Experience the Nightlife

Bandra West has the highest density of party places in Mumbai, although you'll need to start early as there's a 1:30 a.m. nightlife curfew. Janata Bar is the local no-frills watering hole (Janata means "common man" in Hindi). For a casual pub environment, head to Toto's Garage. Iconic Hawaiian Shack is popular with the young crowd, so much so that the owners kept it open due to public demand despite wanting to retire. Hip Bonobo often has live music throughout the week and electronica gigs with DJs on weekends. If you'd prefer retro music, Door Number 1 plays nothing else. The Daily is the only place in Bandra that stays open later than 1:30 a.m. on weekends depending on the crowd. Bandra Base hosts live music performances in an intimate setting. For a classy club environment, drop into Drop. Every month, The Den host's one of the city's most happening "micro" parties, Mixtaped!, with a different guest DJ every week. The stylish Olive Bar and Kitchen is the place for celebrity spotting.

Get a Reflexology Treatment
