Bangalore to Kerala Road trip | A Complete Guide!

The Bangalore to Kerala road trip is a fascinating experience! This road trip from Bangalore covers the lovely hills of Munnar, the serene backwaters of Alleppey/Kumarakkom, pristine beaches at Varkala, the sights of Fort Kochi and temples in Kanyakumari and Madurai. 

The drives cover not more than 300 KMs in a day. The plan is to cover for a week and extend for another two days. It also provides you with an option to just plan for as many days you wish to.

Since this is a road trip, we strongly suggest that you should keep at least 5 days at your disposal to do justice. Though we have planned this Bangalore to Kerala road trip to cover ten days, you can always tweak it and plan as per your needs.

This road trip covers South Kerala. It is advisable to cover Malabar along with Mangalore

I have always been fascinated by the beauty of South India, and I had long dreamed of embarking on a road trip from Bangalore to Kerala, the bustling capital of Karnataka, to Kerala, the enchanting state renowned for its lush backwaters and serene beaches. Finally, the opportunity presented itself, and I set off on an adventure that would unveil the captivating landscapes, vibrant cultures, and warm hospitality that define this region.

Distance and Route

The distance between Bangalore and Kerala can vary depending on the route you choose. The shortest route, via NH44 and NH544, is approximately 462.6 km and can be covered in about 8 hours and 40 minutes. However, if you’re looking for a more scenic route, consider taking the NH27 route via Mysore, which is approximately 524.2 km and can be covered in about 10 hours.

Recommended Route: Road trip from Bangalore to Kerala

If you prioritize scenic beauty and cultural experiences, NH27 via Mysore is the better choice. However, if you prioritize a quicker and more straightforward journey, NH44 and NH544 are the better option.

Best Time to Visit Kerala

Everything You Need To Know About A Bangalore To Kerala Road Trip

If you live in Bangalore, taking an occasional road trip to Kerala is always a good idea. Popularly known as God’s own country, Kerala has some of the world’s best treats to offer including backwaters, beaches, k\lush green landscapes, tea estates, sleepy hills and mouth-watering cuisine. In fac, it is one of the best road trips in India .

How exactly does one go about on a road trip to Kerala? Fret not, our guide will help you figure out the routes and destinations.

Best Time To Visit Kerala

Kerala has a tropical climate and it gets unbearably hot and humid during summers. So avoid visiting Kerala between March to May. Between June and August, a heavy monsoon befalls the area, making it ideal for a road trip and also for ayurvedic treatments.

From September to February is considered the best time to visit Kerala. A lot of tourists come to vacation in Kerala during September and October. November to February is winter in Kerala, which is ideal to visit its hill stations and enjoy the backwaters during these months.

A road trip will be ideal anytime between September to February. During monsoons, driving down the roads of Kerala is doable, but fraught with risks.

Bangalore to Kerala Road Trip

1. bangalore to munnar route.

Bangalore → Dharmapuri → Salem → Erode → Tiruppur → Munnar

• Approximate distance: 446 kilometres

Leave early in the morning as it will take you at least 10 hours to reach Munnar by road. Upon reaching Munnar, you can spend the night there as you will be exhausted after a long drive. You can spend the next day or two visiting Munnar’s many exotic attractions:

You can have breakfast in Krishnagiri, however we do recommend that you stop at Saravana Bhavan in Salem for a good lunch break.

Popular Stopovers

• Hogenakkal Falls: Drench in the pure waters of Hogenakkal Falls near Dharmapuri and breathe in the fresh air of the hills.
• Thirumoorthy Dam: In Avinashi, check out the Thirumoorthy dam and splash around in its shallow waters.
• Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary: Upon crossing Udumalpet, stop over at Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary and drive or trek through its lush green forests.
• Lakkam Waterfalls: Right before reaching Munnar, visit Lakkam waterfalls which has a very enjoyable walking route and shallow streams to get refreshed in.

2. Munnar to Thiruvananthapuram Route

Munnar → Idukki → Adoor → Kottarakkara → Kilimanoor → Thiruvananthapuram

• Approximate distance: 280 kilometres

This route will take you through the spectacular western ghats along a host of natural wonders that it will be difficult to decide where to stop and which places to give a miss. While driving through the narrow stretches of the ghats, be careful not to overspeed.

• Cardamom Hills: Upon crossing Idukki, drive through the hill range of Cardamom Hills, filled with thick foliage and tall trees, and drop by at Thusharagiri Waterfalls.
• Ramakkalmedu: Visit this simple, stunning hill top to enjoy the amazing vistas around. There is a giant Kuravan Kurathi statue here, under which you can take great pictures.
• Perunthenaruvi Falls: Located in Vechoochira which you will cross enroute, stop over at this roaring, gushing waterfall which calls for a little adventure trek on Pampa River.
• Kilimanoor Palace: Before Trivandrum, visit this birthplace of famous painter Raja Ravi Varma, built in the traditional Kerala architectural style with a Nalukettu, ponds and groves.

3. Thiruvananthapuram to Alappuzha Route

Thiruvananthapuram → Kollam → Karunagappaly → Kayamkulam → Alappuzha

• Approximate distance: 150 kilometres

This will be a very short road trip that should not take you more than 3 to 4 hours, but you must leave early in the morning as the enroute stopovers are not to be missed and will easily take up more than a few hours.

• Kollam Beach: Probably one of the cleanest beaches in India with a very active local culture despite commercialisation, visit Kollam beach for its beautiful sunrise and early morning grub.
• Munroe Island: Take an unforgettable canoe trip over the southern backwaters in Kollam. Experience serenity while admiring the views on a slow, peaceful canoe ride.
• Ashtamudi Lake: This is the most visited backwater lake in the state and its right on your way to Alappuzha. Take a houseboat trip here.
• Thangassery Light House: A Portuguese lighthouse that is a great vantage point to view the Kollam beach and surroundings. A must visit.

4. Alappuzha to Kochi Route

Alappuzha → Kottayam → Kumarakom → Kochi

• Approximate distance: 115 kilometres

This route involves a slight detour from Alappuzha. So instead heading straight to Ernakulam, you, you will stop over at Kottayam and Kumarakom to enjoy their many delights.

Popular Stopovers:

• Vagamon: In Kottayam, visit this quiet and secluded hill top to enjoy trekking, paragliding and rock climbing.
• Illikkal Kallu: Near Vagamon, visit these gorgeous rock formations in Illikkal Kallu and go trekking or take a jeep safari.
• Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary: Strictly for bird watching enthusiasts; visit this sanctuary and spot a variety of species from the watchtower.

5. Kochi To Kozhikode Route

Kochi → Chalakudy → Trissur → Tirur → Kozhikode

• Approximate distance: 205 kilometres

This will be more of a cultural leg of your road trip. Thrissur will be your main stopover and it has plenty of temples and cultural gems that you can enjoy. From Kochi you can reach Kozhikode in approximately 5 hours.

• Vadakkunnathan Temple : This temple is over 1000 years old and is considered a heritage Shiva temple, also associated with Adi Shankaracharya.
• Paramekavu Bhagavathy Temple : A traditional Kerala temple with imposing architecture, dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy.

6. Kozhikode to Bangalore Route

Kozhikode → Mandya → Ramanagara → Bangalore

• Approximate distance: 370 kilometres

This will be your route home to Bangalore which should take you approximately 8 hours. By now, you would have travelled across all the major cities and destinations of Kerala and even on your homeward route, you could stop at Nagarhole Tiger Reserve or walk through the famous Ramadevara Betta Hill of Ramanagara.

Safety Measures To Take

• While navigating the narrow lanes throughout your journey and the hairpin bends of Munnar, do drive carefully.
• Consult your GPS while driving or ask the friendly Kerala locals for help.
• Maintain silence and discipline while visiting public places, the Malayalis like their silence.
• Get your bike and car paperwork in order before leaving.
• Make sure you service your vehicle before leaving and also get it services mid-way in Kochi or Trivandrum.
• Google the timings of public places you’re visiting before you take off.
• Carry basic snacks and water at all times, although highway eateries will be plenty.

Things To Carry

• Battery chargers and power bank
• Carry sunglasses, sunscreen and a first-aid kit.
• Make sure you have a basic tool-kit in your vehicle, like puncture repair kit and other gear.
• If you’re on a bike trip, carry gloves, helmet and other protective gear.
• Pack jackets and woollens if you are travelling during winter.

Undulating Tea Estates spread out as far as the eye can see, mystic spice plantations and coffee farms spread over acres, walls covered with bright red hibiscus flowers, and roads lined with sunflowers. A road trip in Kerala is a delightful assault to the senses – the colours, the smiles, and the landscapes are bound to leave the traveller in you reeling with joy.

Suggested itinerary for a road trip in Kerala

Here’s a suggested itinerary for a road trip in Kerala before I divulge the route we took and provide tips and tricks to making the most of a road trip to Kerala in 2 weeks:

• Tea Estates and hills at Munnar or Wayanad (3-4 days)
• Spice Plantations and wildlife at Thekkady (3 days)
• Backwaters and houseboats at Kumarakom or Alleppey (3 days)
• Beaches at Varkala or Kovalam (3 days)
• City life in Kochi, with a day trip to Athirappilly (2 days)

Of course the itinerary charted above is flexible. You can weed out places based on personal preferences and the amount of time at hand. We had just 10 days in Kerala, so we decided to skip the beaches of Varkala and Kovalam. Here’s the route we followed on our road trip in Kerala:

Budgeting for your road trip in Kerala

Let’s start with the logistics first – car rental and expenses. The overall cost of this road trip will depend on the city of departure and the hotels you choose. Kerala boasts of some stunning hotels and you can choose everything from bespoke hideaways to homestays, depending on your budget and personal preferences. Here’s a list of expenses other than accommodation

• Domestic flights to Coimbatore/Kochi cost under £100/INR 10,000 from most cities in India
• A rental car will set you back by approximately £20-£30/INR 2000-3000 per day depending on the car you choose.
• We spent £45/INR 4500 on fuel for a 10 day road trip. This amount will increase if you decide to drive down to Kovalam.
• It’s easy to eat for less than £5/INR 500 at little eateries across Kerala. They serve delectable food and have a variety of local delicacies on offer. There are also several fine-dining restaurants in the area and some of our favourites are mentioned in the article below.

Driving and Renting a car for your road trip in Kerala

You know just how much we love driving around in new places and this was no exception. Driving in Kerala is much easier than Ladakh (our last road trip in India). Roads are in good shape and drivers are not aggressive. However do beware than this route featured hilly drives and hairpin bends by the dozen, so drive yourself only if you have previous experience driving in hills. Having said that, we loved driving in Kerala. We would recommend it if you’re a seasoned driver who enjoys road trips.

We would definitely recommend renting with an Indian rental company while you are in India as they understand the nuances of the market well. We’ve rented with Myles Cars in India before and enjoyed their service, so we decided to stick to the same provider this time around too. We picked up our car –  Mahindra XUV 500 – from Coimbatore airport. It was

• Prance in the tea estates of Munnar
• Go for a wildlife safari at Periyar National Park
• Buy fragrant local spices and loose leaf tea for friends and family back home
• Visit a coffee farm
• Go canoeing in Vembanad Lake
• Stay in a houseboat as your explore the backwaters of Kerala
• Sample Toddy, an alcoholic drink made from the sap of the palm tree
• Try local delicacies such as Meen Pollichathu (fish wrapped in banana leaf), Meen Curry (spiced fish curry), Avial (vegetables in a coconut curry), dosas (savoury crépes), and Ulli Theeyal (shallot curry)
• Hunt down waterfalls at Chelarkovil or Athirappilly
• Make friends – locals in the area are friendly and helpful. Talk to them, pick their brains about scenic spots in the vicinity, and share a meal (or two) with them.

Best time to visit Kerala

The months between November and February are perfect to visit Kerala. Expect moderate temperatures and lush green estates. Of course these are peak months, so expected higher rates and crowds at popular places. We wanted to avoid the tourist hordes, so we visited during March, which is a shoulder month. It was perfect but some days did tend to get extremely hot and humid, especially in the backwaters.

July and August are popular with tourists too as this is peak monsoon season. Kerala’s monsoons are special – expect an abundance of greenery and beautiful waterfalls.

Day by day itinerary for a road trip in Kerala

Day 1: fly into coimbatore and drive to munnar.

This day is reserved for arriving in Munnar, the first stop on your road trip of Kerala. Fly into Kochi or Coimbatore. We chose Coimbatore International Airport because it is serviced by Myles.  We picked up are rental car at the airport and kick started our road trip.

Roads are in great shape and there are lots of supermarkets and restaurants on the way. Stock up on snacks, fruits for your road trip. There’s no need to go overboard as hot food is readily available during the length of this road trip in Kerala. Stop at Thoovanam Falls on the way  – the gurgling waterfall is worth a pitstop only if you’re visiting during monsoon months (July & August)

The scenery will begin to change dramatically as you inch closer to Munnar. The searing sun will give way to a nip in the air. Winding roads punctuated with undulating tea plantations and rolling hills will welcome you to the area.

Accommodation in Munnar

Munnar town is quite crowded and chaotic. We suggest staying in a hotel in a village called Chinnakanal. The village is a convenient forty minute drive from Munnar. Here it is possible to stay in a hotel or homestay in the midst of gorgeous tea plantations. Two hotels that boast of great views in the area are Terrace Greens and Club Mahindra. We chose the former for our stay in Munnar – rooms at Terrace Greens aren’t luxurious but they are spacious and well-equipped. Food is tasty. However the lack of wifi in the rooms lets it down.

The hotel is nestled in the countryside, so make sure you stock up on provisions beforehand. Munnar is twenty kilometres away and Surianelli village, which has a large bustling market, is just 5 kilometres away

Days 1-4: Explore Munnar and Chinnakanal

There are lots of things to do in the area but waking up to the sight of endless tea plantations would have to be one of my favourite experiences in Munnar. Low hanging clouds float over verdant tea estates, lending magic to the proceedings.

But we weren’t just exploring tea estates or photographing them. Here’s a list of other things to see and do in the area:

•  Anayirankal Dam and Lake: a picturesque boating and picnic spot, Anayirankal Dam and Lake provides photo opportunities by the dozen.
• Mattupetty Dam and Lake: one of the most popular sites in the area, it tends to get quite crowded. We didn’t love the viewing area but really enjoyed driving along the lake.
• Top Station and Echo Point: Combine your trip to Mattupetty Dam with a drive to Echo Point and Top Station. This makes for an incredibly scenic drive. Expect gorgeous views of the Western Ghats and magical low-lying clouds everywhere.
• Kolukkumalai tea estate: A bumpy ride gets you to the world’s highest tea plantation, where tea is picked and processed in a traditional fashion. Kolukkumalai is gorgeous and definitely worth a visit.
• A traditional tea factory: It should be illegal to leave Munnar without visiting a traditional tea factory. Watch tea leaves being painstakingly picked and processed into high-quality tea. Make sure you pick a bag or two for friends and family back home.

Day 5: Drive from Munnar to Thekkady

After luxuriating in the green environs of Munnar for a few days, it is time to continue with your road trip of Kerala. Start early as the drive from Munnar to Thekkady is one of the prettiest ones – you will want to stop for photographs every few kilometres.

The drive begins, quite predictably, with endless stretches of tea estates. Gradually these get replaced by spice plantations and coffee farms. Roads snaking through Kerala’s Cardamom Hills are lined with bright red hibiscus flowers and chrome sunflowers. Every once in a while, purple wild flowers make an appearance, as if to add even more colour to the landscape.  Check in to your hotel on reaching Thekkady.

Accommodation in Thekkady

Try to opt for an experiential hotel in the area. Choosing a hotel that in the midst of a spice plantation amplifies the experience manifold. We stayed in Shalimar Spice Garden . Shalimar Spice Garden is a rustic yet luxurious hideaway in Thekkady. The hotel is located in the middle of 30 acres of spice plantations. Rooms are well-equipped, spacious, and boast of huge balconies. The hotel boasts of a gorgeous pool area dotted with hammocks and swings. The in-house restaurant serves delectable food. We loved our stay at Shalimar Spice Garden and would recommend it wholeheartedly.

Days 5-8: Explore Thekkady and Periyar National Park

Spend your days in Thekkady exploring its rich spice plantations, the Periyar National Park, and its surroundings. Here are a few of our favourite things to do in Thekkady on your road trip of Kerala:

Visiting Periyar National Park

Boat tours are coveted at the park because tickets are limited. Apparently you can book tickets online but despite multiple attempts, we were unable to do that.  If you want to get on a boat safari at Periyar National Park, then plan on getting up early. Get to the entrance of Periyar National Reserve by 5.45 am, park your car, get your entrance tickets (INR 65 for Indian Nationals and £3.5/INR300 for foreign nationals) and board the bus operated by the Forest Reserve. If you get onboard the first bus, chances are you’ll get a ticket for the much coveted boat ride (£2/INR150) . This is what we did but to be honest, we didn’t see much (except for a couple of stray birds). The Periyar Lake is pretty early in the morning. But the boat safari at Periyar National Park is definitely not worth the effort, especially if you’ve been to other destinations rich in wildlife such as South Africa or Australia. If you want to visit the National Park, opt for a Jeep Safari at Gavi instead.

Other than visiting Periyar National Park, here are a few of our favourite things to do in the area.

• Chellarkovil: The area boasts of waterfalls and cascades during monsoon season. There was no water at the waterfalls when we visited. But the sleepy village of Chellarkovil makes for a great drive and offers sweeping views of the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu too. It’s also a great picnic spot, so make sure you pack a snack or two.
• There are some great treks in Kurushmala Hills – it’s better to opt for guided treks in the area
• The bustling town of Kumily is the gateway to scenic drives in the Periyar Valley. Pandikuzhi is a great place to stop for a picnic or a few photographs.

Day 8: Drive from Thekkady to Kumarakom

This drive isn’t the most scenic of the lot as it passes through lots of busy towns and chaotic villages. If you enjoy hiking, make sure you go for a short hike to Eagle Eock in the village of Parunthumpara on the way to Peerumedu . It offers a vantage point from where one can drink in views of the neighbouring valleys, mountains, and villages. Also try stopping in one of the villages on the way for a meal or a cup of coffee – experience everyday life in a village, explore Kerala’s pastel churches, or photographs its brightly-coloured houses. Upon reaching Kumarakom, you will start spotting glimpses of Kerala’s iconic backwaters and lagoons. Check into your hotel and prepare to be smitten by this quaint village of canals.

Accommodation in Kumarakom

The backwaters of Kerala boast of some stunning hotels. On the recommendation of dozens of friends and readers, we booked a pool villa at CGH Earth Coconut Lagoon Resort . And we couldn’t be happier about it. It is definitely one of the prettiest hotels we’ve EVER stayed at (and we’ve stayed in thousands!). You can park your car at their private parking at Kumarakom Jetty and board their boat, which brings you to the hotel. We promise you will fall in love with the hotel almost as soon as you float into the reception area. The hotel complex resembles a traditional village, intersected by canals and lagoons. We chose a room overlooking the backwaters of Kerala – rooms are luxurious and boast of modern amenities. Can’t recommend this one enough!

Days 8-12: Explore the backwaters of Kerala and experience life on a houseboat

The backwaters of Kerala will seduce you in no time. Spend your days taking in the stunning scenery.

• Go for a languorous canoe ride on Vembanad Lake or a sunset cruise in the backwaters.
• Treat yourself to a traditional Ayurvedic massage, which is bound to leave you feeling rejuvenated.
• Savour local delicacies such as Meen Pollichathu (grilled fish) or Karimeen curry (spicy fish curry), and  Sadya (traditional vegetarian feast) at meal times.
• Go for a bird-watching walk – Kumarakom bird sanctuary is famous for hundreds of species of birds and attracts bird enthusiasts from all around the world.

Spend your last night in Kumarakom on a houseboat. This is an experience like no other. Make sure you choose a traditional houseboat fashioned out of reed, cork, and bamboo. We spent the night on a 1 bedroom houseboat by Spice Coast Cruises and loved the experience. The evening was spent sailing past duck farms, busy villages, and floating shops. We watched the sun set over the backwaters from the comfort of our houseboat. We devoured a three course meal as the day metamorphosed into night. Most of the evening was spent lounging on the boat while staring at the stars. Make the most of it as it will soon be time to drive out of Kumarakom.

Days 12-15: Fly back or continue to the beaches of Kerala

If you have a few more days in Kerala, you should drive from Kumarakom to the southern tip of the state to explore its beaches. Varkala is a perfect pit stop if you like beach destinations sprinkled with bohemia. If you enjoy classic luxury, then choose a decadent hotel in the coastal town of Kovalam .

We had just 12 days in Kerala, so we drove back to Coimbatore International Airport from Kumarkom and boarded our flight back to New Delhi. You can also spend a night or two in Kochi on your way back to Coimbatore. Make sure you drive to Athirappilly Waterfalls if you’re in Kochi.

That’s it – an idyllic 2 week road trip in Kerala, India. This road trip offers a plethora of panoramas, sights, and cultural experiences – it is bound to leave you rejuvenated! We loved our time in Kerala and can’t wait to go back!

And yeah we did cover main points you suggested at Munnar..It was raining for first two days but on the day of actual sight seeing, it was lovely sunny out.. Vid, I must tell you, I try to click pictures like you do, the locals, the lush green tea plants and all.. and output is always great. Big Thanks to you both.. Yeah we used public transport for Coimbatore to Munnar , Munnar to Alleppy..KSRTC buses..BOM to Coimbtore and Cochin to BOM flight. PS: We Skipped early morning Thekkady boat ride too 😛

From my recollection we did have to take permits in different places but don’t really remember how many places. But I do remember that it wasn’t difficult at all and we didn’t have to do anything in advance

Hi Savi & Vid. I have been closely following you on Instagram and your posts on travel make me jealous. Wish I could go roam the country (leave aside the world) more frequently. I am mesmerized by every post of yours.

Anyways I have been planning a trip to Kerala in December (we shall start from Kochi) for 4 days/3 nights. My friends and family suggested Munnar-Takkady-Kumarkom (1 night stay at a boathouse). We would reach Munnar by afternoon as we would definitely stop for various waterfalls along kochi-munnar route. But we would stay only 1 night in munnar (I wanted to stay 2 days) and leave next day morning around 11 am for tekkady. Do you think this plan can get hectic? Or should we skip Tekkady/Periyar altogether for a more relaxed holiday? Any suggestions on an itinerary? Any places you feel we should not miss around Munnar (like chinna kanal) if we decide to stay there for 2 days?

I discovered your Youtube channel a while back and was instantly impressed, inspired and not to mention, instantly subscribed. I’ve enjoyed the many trip reports there and so when I was “Googling” about itineraries for our upcoming Kerala trip and found a link to your blog, it definitely brought a smile and a feeling that this is going to be it. And after going through it and seeing the pictures, I’ll say I was not disappointed at all.

Anyway, to the subject. As I mentioned it’s going to be a Family Trip – 6 adults, Two kids (2 yr and 1 yr). The dates – 20th-27th September. Unfortunately, we don’t have many days. So my question is, can your itinerary be modified to 7 days and will the season be good? Also, I checked Myles but they don’t have availability on those days. Any other Car Rental recommendations would be appreciated.

The 7 Day Kerala Itinerary

Experience the Best of Kerala in 7 Days

This 7 Day Kerala Road Trip Itinerary is designed keeping the following factors in mind:

• Fly in and Fly Out from Cochin International Airport
• Have a vehicle at your disposal
• Have 8 days in your hand

After doing a 7 Day Road Trip to Bhutan back in March 2019, I decided to go on a   One Week Trip to Kerala but with my family, and this was roughly what we did, and what I recommend to you as well, as it contains a glimpse of everything you can experience in Kerala – God’s Own Country including admiring the different forms of street art, and cultural heritage in Kochi ; visiting the massive tea estates in Munnar ; experiencing the rawness of Nature in Periyar Tiger Reserve in Thekkady and enjoying the quietness and serenity of the Kerala Backwaters.

Having said that, the main priority of this 7 Day Kerala Itinerary is to relax and rejuvenate , as there isn’t much to do in Munnar, Thekkady or Alleppey.

Day 1 – Land in Kochi – Explore Fort Kochi

Day 2 – Kochi – Munnar and Munnar Spice Garden Visit

Day 3 – munnar sightseeing and tea factory visit.

Day 4 – Munnar – Thekkady

Day 5 – Thekkady Nature Trails

Day 6 – thekkady – kumarakom / lake vembanad.

Day 7 – Alleppey Backwaters Houseboat Experience

To make the most out of your Day 1 of your 7 Day Kerala Road Trip , make sure to land in Kochi before mid-day. This way you can check in to a hotel of your liking, preferably in Fort Kochi, and have the rest of the day, post lunch to explore the city of Kochi.

A charming seaside area, Fort Kochi is known for its Dutch, Portuguese, and British colonial architecture, and elaborate bamboo Chinese fishing nets which you can see at Fort Kochi Beach.

Fort Kochi is getting popular for its thriving and blooming art and cultural scene, which becomes evident, as you waltz your way around the narrow by lanes, and admire the different street art graffiti’s.

One place I’ll definitely recommend is the Kashi Art Café , where you’ll find some rather interesting and unique creations of art.

Enjoy a relaxing hearty meal in one of the many quaint cafes spread out in Fort Kochi, before calling it a night, and gearing up for the next day.

It takes around 4-5 hours by road from Kochi to Munnar , so ideally you should start by 9 AM, making sure that you reach Munnar – One of the Best Hill Stations in India ,  by lunch time.

3 hours on the road, and it’s time for the first pit stop – Munnar Spices and Ayurvedic Garden.

The one hour tour across the spice plantation, where the guide briefs about various benefits of different spices and ayurvedic herbs, is quite a learning lesson, which sets a good tone to your 7 Day Kerala Trip.

BTW there’s also a chocolate factory, selling a variety of chocolates, which you can taste and buy as well. However, I’ll rather suggest, you purchase the chocolates from the shops in the city, as they are much cheaper.

After the pit stop, continue on your way to Munnar, and reach your hotel, which was Amber Dale Resort and Spa, Munnar in our case.

Post lunch, explore the nearby Pallivassal Tea Estate , and the Attukad Waterfall , at your own pace.

Like already mentioned, the priority of this 7 Day Kerala Itinerary is relaxation and rejuvenation. And there’s nothing better than, waking up without an alarm, and then enjoying a leisurely breakfast overlooking the picturesque tea estates.

Post lunch, head out to Lockhart tea estate for a tour of the tea factory, and learn more about the different processes involved in the production of Tea.

Alternatively, you can head to the Mattupetty Dam and the Mattupetty Tea Estate , and do the tea factory tour there instead.

Thereafter make your way back to your hotel, to enjoy an amazing sunset, and a yummy dinner.

Plan your day in such a way, that you enjoy a hearty breakfast at leisure in Munnar, and reach Thekkady – The Gateway to Periyar Tiger Reserve , just in time for lunch in Thekkady.

We managed to reach our resort in Thekkady – Greenwoods Resort Thekkady , just in time for lunch, which was followed by a guided tour around the 6-acre property, where we got to know more about the conscious efforts that, these people have been taking towards sustainability and implementing eco-tourism practices.

Post lunch, and a stroll around the property, there’s nothing better than jumping in the pool for some time, and taking an afternoon nap, in one of the many hammocks, hanging around.

However, keep in mind that if you plan to explore the Periyar Tiger Reserve on the next day, like us, you need to get your tickets for activities like Jungle Patrol, Bamboo Rafting, Border Hiking, Boating and Trekking, from the Ticket counter, which is just a 5 minutes’ drive from Greenwoods Resort Thekkady , and the counter closes around 5 PM in the evening (cross check with the reception).

Also, there are a lot of cultural performances such as Kalaripayattu or Kathakalli , which happen in the evening every day, the tickets of which also need to be purchased before 5 PM (the reception will guide you to the ticket office).

Once you are back after purchasing the tickets, you can explore the Thekkady market, which is just at the doorstep of Greenwoods  Resort Thekkady , and purchase various spices, handmade chocolates, and other ayurvedic products.

Have a sumptuous dinner and call it an early night.

This is the day in your One Week Trip To Kerala when you will be exploring the untouched beauty of Periyar Tiger Reserve , and the best way to get the best experience, is to opt for  Bamboo Rafting , which basically involves, a one-and-a-half-hour hike through the jungle – an hour-long boat ride – and a hike back to the starting point.

The important thing to keep in mind, is to keep yourself hydrated, which PTR takes care off, as they give you a packed lunch, a bottle of water, some juice and fresh fruits in a backpack, making it easy to carry.

Hiking through the forest, with a guide, be assured that you will spot a lot of different species of birds, and if you are lucky, some animals as well.

This whole experience of exploring the untouched beauty of Periyar Tiger Reserve , will take up 6 – 7 hours, and you should be back by 3 – 4 PM, giving you enough time to go back to the hotel, take an afternoon nap, and then head out again to see the cultural performances.

As you will be tired, all you should be doing is chilling out once you are back to the resort for dinner, and a leisure stroll across the property, and ensuring that you get proper and well-deserved rest.

Its Day 6 of your 7 Day Trip to Kerala, and you should check out of your hotel in Thekkady, to reach Aleppey/Kumarakom/Lake Vembanad, which will take 3-4 hours by road.

We had planned to stay at Lemon Tree Lake Vembanad , which overlooks the massive Lake Vembanad, and is a hot favorite among both corporate and leisure travelers. We were just in time for lunch, where the chef had prepared an authentic lunch in the local flavors, which was a gastronomic experience like none other.

There are plenty of luxury resorts in Kumarakom and Alleppey , which you can choose from depending on your budget, However, my personal recommendation would be Lemon Tree Lake Vembanad . It was the perfect place for us to be, as there wasn’t much to do, except to relax, enjoy the views, and chill out in the infinity pool overlooking Lake Vembanad.

An interesting addition that you can add to this One Week Kerala Itinerary of yours, while in the Kerala backwaters is visiting Munroe Island , as a day trip from Allepey / Kumarakom.

And just like that the 7 Day Kerala Road Trip, is at the last stage, but worry not, as there’s something special for the last day, which is – A full day cruise of the backwaters in the houseboat where you get to experience the beauty of nature in God’s Own Country, while enjoying a traditional meal on board , comprising of more than 15 dishes, served on a banana leaf.

The last day of the 7 Day Kerala Itinerary , couldn’t be much better than this. And did I forget to mention, you can book a spa session in the evening, after enjoying the day cruising along the backwaters. The 60 minutes ayurvedic massage, is just what your body needs, bringing your relaxing One Week Trip to Kerala to an end.

Cochin International Airport , is merely an hour’s drive from Lemon Tree Lake Vembanad , so you can book your flight accordingly, on the next day, thus bringing an end to a super relaxing 7 Day Kerala Tour.

Where to Stay in Kerala?

If you are looking for some solitude, exclusivity, and amazing panoramic views of the expansive tea gardens of Munnar, then you should look no further than Amber Dale Resort and Spa in Munnar.

I really enjoyed and felt every bit of your 7-day road trip to Kerala. You’re a real traveling lover. And you know a lot about how make the travel plan excited. So, I would like to get some suggestions from you.

I’ve planned a bike trip across Kerala at the end of September for 10days. My route will be almost the whole of Kerala.

Day 1: Bangalore to Mangalore- stay and see the place

Day2: Mangalore to Bekal to Kozhikode – stay in Kozhikode

Day 3: Kozhikode to Kochi- stay in Kochi

Day 4: Kochi to Alleppey- stay in Alleppey for 2days

Day 6: Alleppey to Varkala to Munnar – stay there for 2days.

Day 8: Munnar to pallakad- stay in pallakad

Day 9: Palakkad to Bangalore

Now please suggest should I add or remove destinations from this list to make the all 10 days journey worthwhile.

I was thinking:

* Should I include Varkala or not!!!

* The best possible route to Bangalore from Palakkad or Munnar as Palakkad is just an option, not a necessary place to visit.

* I still have a day or two left in case I drop out Palakkad. Which place I can visit?

This really does come at a great time. I’m looking to visit this part of India on my annual visit in December. I remember visiting fort kochi when I was really little and would love to visit it again. For kochi is where i start my trip and even though I don’t have 8 days will try and get as much as I can in the4 days I’m there. I really like the varied nature of your recommended Kerala itinerary. It also looks like Kerala is an ideal place to relax amid natural beauty. I am particularly drawn to spice garden and tea factory visits.

This is such a perfect 7 day itinerary. We followed the exact same route a few years ago. The scenery is stunning, the chocolates are yummy and the relaxation on the backwaters just perfect. We loved spending time at the side of the road at the tea plantations, we even managed to chat to some of the lovely ladies. Thanks for bringing back great memories of our time in Kerala.

7 days in Kerala sounds like a dream! Needless to say I’d be spending a lot of time in the infinity pool at Lemon Tree Vembanad Lake Resort – how very cool. Once you mentioned the art at Fort Kochi, I realized I might need more days for this trip… it sounds (and looks) like an incredible place to admire street art! I do love a good road trip! I love the ideas of stopping at the spice garden and the tea factory, which I believe is essential when exploring a new region. The houseboat experience at the end of the trip is a great way to cap off an amazing adventure. That gastronomic adventure on banana leaves sounds delish!

Our extremely beautiful Bangalore to Bekal Road Trip

For the longest time, we were planning a Bangalore to Bekal Road Trip. First when we planned our week long Kerala road trip from Bangalore last year. But then we dropped Bekal from the plan due to lack of time.

Then, during our marriage anniversary in June first week, we were contemplating to visit Bekal. But due to the monsoons striking strong in the western ghats, we instead ended up enjoying a staycation at the Taj Fisherman’s Cove in Chennai on the Kovalam Beach Chennai . The next attempt to travel to Bekal was again cancelled last moment due to the monsoon furry at the end of June. And instead, we visited Badami , Pattadakal group of temples and the temples of Aihole . (Which by the way, turned out to be an absolutely wonderful trip).

Finally, during the long weekend around 15th of August, we made a very impromptu road trip to coastal Karnataka . And extended the trip to Bekal as well. Thus, finally materialised our Bangalore to Bekal Road Trip. Let me give you a little introduction to Bekal before we get started on this virtual trip.

An introduction to Bekal

Bekal is a coastal town in North Kerala in the Kasargod district , that has some very pristine unexplored beaches, beautiful forts built during the 14th – 18th century and serene backwater canals. It has a plethora of things to do and places to see. Some most famous ones include the Bekal Fort, Bekal beach, backwater lakes and natural caves. People enjoy spending calm time at the uncrowded beaches here, kayaking and boating in the backwaters, exploring the ancient forts and the fishing harbours and bird watching in the dense coconut grooves that surround the backwaters. And for a slice of luxury there are some top end resorts and hotels in the town as well. Overall, it is a perfect place for a short staycation from Bangalore – unexplored and beautiful.

Bangalore to Bekal Road Trip

Bekal is well connected via road to Mangalore in Karnataka and Kasargod town in Kerala. The NH 66 that runs through major part of the west coast of India passes through Bekal as well. As such, when we planned our Bangalore to Bekal road trip, for the major part, we drove through the road that leads from Bangalore to Mangalore. And finally, almost 60km before Bekal, took a diversion from the Bangalore – Mangalore highway. So, our Bangalore to Bekal Road trip followed this route :

Bangalore -> Mysore -> Kushalnagar -> Madikeri -> Sullia -> Kolathur -> Bekal

From Bangalore all the way till Sullia we drove on NH275.

Near Sullia we took a left diversion from the NH275 and continued to drive through Pushpagiri Reserve, Munnad, kolathur and Chattanchal to finally reach Bekal.

The start of our Bangalore to Bekal Road Trip

As always we started very early from our home in Bangalore, around 5:00am. And reached Mysore road by 6:00am. From here, it was a very smooth drive on the Bangalore – Mysore expressway. And by 8:30am we had already crossed Mysore bypass. And taken the route towards Madikeri. This is when we stopped for breakfast.

Post breakfast , around 9:00am, we started further.

Crossing Madikeri on our Bangalore to Bekal Road Trip

Soon we reached Kushalnagar. The road from Mysore to Madikeri is also in excellent condition. Only the highway gets narrower here. At some places it is 4 lane and at some stretches even an undivided two lane road. So, we couldn’t maintain the same speed as we did on the Bangalore – Mysore highway. However, the beautiful scene all around the highway more than made up for that.

We soon crossed some famous places to see in Coorg including the Abby Falls, the Madikeri Fort, Nisargadhama etc. bringing back memories from the past when we have explored these places on our trip to Coorg.

Since it was the monsoons season, the whole region was covered in a new blanket of green and thickly dense forests and plantations.

On the way, we stopped at a pit stop. I am sure it must be a viewpoint with a designated name. For, there was a beautiful gushing waterfall here. Some shops selling snacks and tea. And a breathtaking view of the mountains across the road. We stopped for around 20 minutes here. As the journey through the winding roads had started making the kids little dizzy. Although we had traveled to Madikeri couple of years back in October, the region looked completely different during the monsoons. With clouds hanging low and mystic mountains looking green as ever!! For once I felt to halt for the day in Coorg only 🙂 !!

After enjoying the fresh air and the beautiful surroundings and having some tea and coffee, we started further on our trip through NH275 on our Bangalore to Bekal Road Trip.

Leaving the highway for the winding Kerala roads to Bekal

Around 11:30am, we left the highway near Sullia and started on the way to Bekal. The road got narrow here. And a lot more winding. It passed through thick and dense forest area. Where at places the leaves of the trees were so dense that the sunlight was not even reaching the ground through them!! Perhaps this was the Greater Thalakaveri National Park and later the Pushpagiri reserve forest area, that I later recognised by looking at the google maps that we followed.

Along side the road here, there was a river flowing. It felt like driving inside a dense rainforest, besides a river like the Nile or Amazon!! Also, along the path here, there were many pit-stops from where one can get better view of the river and the surroundings. There are a lot of unofficial and some official viewpoints on the route. But the road is very winding and two lane undivided road.

Due to the road condition and the hilly terrain, it took us 2+ hours to cover this stretch of around 45-50km. But the surroundings were very beautiful.

Hitting NH66 on the Bangalore to Bekal Road Trip

Finally, around 1:00pm, we came out of the winding hill-forest and hit NH66. The highway that runs through most of west coast of India. And within half and hour, we reached our resort – the Lalit Resort and Spa Bekal. Read here our complete experience staying at the Lalit Resort and Spa Bekal.

Lunch options on the Bangalore to Bekal road trip

There are plenty of Lunch options all the way from Bangalore till Madikeri. But we crossed these regions pretty early for lunch. After Madikeri, once you take the mountain road to Kerala border, there are no lunch options on this road. Again, once you hit NH66, there are plenty of food outlets. The junction where we left NH66 to enter our resort had a lot of food joints on the NH itself. However, since we reached our resort by 1:30pm, we had lunch at the premises itself.

But, if for some reason you are reaching your accommodation late, you plan to have lunch either on the Madikeri stretch or at NH66.

All in all, we had a wonderful road trip driving from Bangalore to Bekal. It was part expressway, part decent highway and part narrow and winding hilly road. But through and through it was very scenic. So much that I have decided to give it a place in my list of most beautiful road trips that we have taken in India . So, I will really encourage you to take this Bangalore to Bekal road trip if you are a road trip enthusiast like us.

• The beaches in Bekal are calm and peaceful. There’s not too much of buzz or night party kind of scene like Goa. So, do bear that in mind. It is more suitable for a laid back, relaxing holiday like what we experience in south Goa on beaches like the Agonda Beach or in extreme north like the Arambol beach in North Goa .

An amazing road trip from Bangalore to Kerala! Travel vlog.

Friends..today I’m back with a travel vlog which is from Bangalore to Kerala through Salem. It is nearly 600 kms from Bangalore to our place in Kerala. We travelled in the month of November so it was very cool climate in Tamil Nadu. They usually get rains in November. We had a lot of fun throughout our journey. Normally we start our journey early in the morning so as to reach Kerala by evening. We carry our pet cat “Chukku” also in our journey.

Usually we have our breakfast from a small hotel in Salem highway. It’s a very small hotel. They prepare foods on firewood and has lot of varieties of Dosas. Normally I prepare lunch and carry with us. It was packed in banana leaves in traditional way. We call it “Pothichoru” in Malayalam. It’s really tasty to have meals packed in cooked banana leaf. We all had fun to have it in an open space somewhere in Kerala.

On the way we could see a small rock hill. Whenever we go to Kerala kids always ask us to climb these hills. So we decided to do it this time. It was really fun climbing it with our cat 🙂 Also it was the first time we travelled after the completion of Kuthiran tunnel. We really enjoyed this tunnel ride too. Travelling from one beautiful destination to another beautiful one is always a fun and when the travel is to be completed by road then definitely it becomes the most memorable one. If you really wish to enjoy the best road trip in your life then you must take the one from Bangalore to Kerala. This journey between the two states would always be a treasure if you have a well-planned itinerary for the same. Starting from Bangalore the capital of Karnataka to Kerala the god’s own country, the journey is really going to be pleasurable. Though there are many routes to head towards this wonderful road trip but Bangalore – Guruvayoor – Cochin – Alleppey – Thekkady – Munnar – Bangalore, would be the finest and the most comfortable one.

Bangalore – Guruvayoor: The distance is about 500 kilometers from Bangalore to Kerala and definitely the road trip is going to be exiting and memorable. Enroute, you are going to experience so many beautiful locations that will make it the best journey of your life. Heading to Kerala the first stoppage in your journey should be Guruvayoor which takes 8 hours from Bangalore to reach here. For this journey, you have to leave early morning. Staying in the elephant sanctuary near Krishna temple would be a wise decision. If you really wish to visit the temple then it might take from 2-4 hours for you to do the same.  Spending a night at the forest camp would be a great adventure for sure because you are going to experience a great stay there.

Guruvayoor – Cochin: Early morning next day head towards Cochin. The road trip would take 2 hours and within the comfortable duration of time you will reach the destination. However there are many activities for you to do at the place but the best favor that you should give yourself should be a check-in to the houseboat. Noon 12 to next day morning 10:00 Am could be the best time for you to spend at the houseboat. There are lot many places to see in Cochin like Marine drive, Chinese fishing nets, Fort Cochin where you can visit Dutch palace, Jew Synagogue; you can speculate all these locations before checking into the houseboat.

Cochin – Alleppey: Leave for Alleppey next day morning and you would reach to your destination within 2 hours. Enroute you would witness the lush green roads that would fill you with lot of positivity. As Kerala is famous for houseboats and Alleppey is the best place to witness the same. Enjoying at the backwaters is the best thing that you can do to enjoy the location. A ride of yours in the backwaters of Kerala would be the best one. Your boat will cruise through the inland canals, backwaters and lakes. You will also be able to experience the long stretch of paddy fields at Allepey. Definitely, this is going to be the best experience of your lifetime.

Alleppey – Thekkady: The distance between Alleppey to Thekkady is almost 150 kilometers and it will take you approx 3.5 hours to reach the place. Spending a night at Thekkady would be best than spending at Alleppey because from there you can witness the beautiful night view of the clear sky in between the wildlife sanctuary. Next day early morning you should leave to witness the world’s famous Periyar wildlife sanctuary which is located in Thekkady. It is the best place for adventure lovers and also for the eco-tourism. Thekkady has lot of activities and shows running in the evening. You can watch Kalarippayattu (martial arts of Kerala), Kathakali, Magic show, musical fountains, tribal dance etc. You can also go for an Ayurvedic massage, Elephant ride, Elephant bath, Elephant shower, Spice plantation tour etc. You can plan for boating through Periyar River as well as above activities.

Thekkady – Munnar: Another beautiful destination is waiting for you in your Bangalore to Kerala road trip. The distance to be covered is 110 kilometers. But, the journey would be worth when you would reach Munnar the most beautiful hill station in Kerala. Devikulam Lake, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Ramakkarmedu, Lakkom Waterfalls, Eravikulam National Park are few of the places you should never ever visit on the trip.

Munnar – Bangalore: And, here comes the final journey to the destination. Start early in the morning as it will take almost 10 hours for you to reach the place. The roads are good in condition and are covered with coconut trees that will make your journey worth.

Road Trip Diary – Bangalore To Munnar

After ticking off all the top weekend destinations from our travel list ( Read : Top 5 Weekend getaways from Bangalore ) and a lot of brainstorming on finding a perfect destination to spend our long weekend, we zeroed in on one of the top-most tourist destination of Kerala – Munnar, famous for lush greenery, scenic views, home-made chocolates and plenty of vantage points. Here is our Road Trip Diary – Bangalore to Munnar.

Munnar is 476 km from Bangalore and the drive is one of the best with breathtaking views, hairpin bends, steep climbs accompanied by waterfalls, windmills, tea estates and much more. We started at 5:00 AM from Bangalore taking the route via Hosur -> Salem -> Chinar to Munnar, crossing a lot of toll gates and taking breaks to feed our lenses, we reached at 7:00 pm in the evening and were welcomed by a beautiful drizzle.

Here are some of the best things that we experienced whilst on our road trip from Bangalore to Munnar. So, come along with us as we take you to on a sojourn to one of the most stunning hill station of Kerala. 

1. The Drive Itself

The drive is amazing as the roads are awesome as for the most part you are going to drive on the highway  (NH7), not even that, the state highways are also good and well maintained with lots of coconut trees on either side of the road. Stock up on food and hit the road with your favorite travel songs to play along with way.

2. Endless Windmills 

Windmills stretch on for many kilometers on either side of the road. I was fascinated to see so many windmills running together. On a different note, after a bit of googling around found that Tamil Nadu generates 6000 W while Kerala 32 W of wind power from windmills. Isn’t that cool!!!

3. Zillions of  Breathtaking waterfalls

one after the other will keep you glued throughout the journey. #MonsoonMagic 

Skip the popular ones and find a waterfall with no one around for miles.

The undulating forest landscape looked beautiful with trees, small trickling streams and wooden bridges add an extra charm to the place. 

4. Tea Gardens to accompany you 

Rolling hills are carpeted by manicured tea gardens. As far as the eye can see there is greenery all around. You will be awed by the spectacular scenic beauty on every turn of the road.

Munnar is one of the largest exporters of tea all over the world.

5. Unexpected Surprises

might just pop out of nowhere. We met this cute baby elephant playing happily whilst mommy was busy in her own world.

6. Sampling Cuisines

Stop for lunch at some roadside restaurant and devour yourself to hot cooked rice, spread on a banana leaf with rasam , sambar , curd, beetroot, payasam :):), a typical south Indian cuisine.

7. Plenty of Scenic Views 

will tempt you to stop your car and capture the memories for a lifetime.

These drives through the tea estates are the most amazing drives I have had! How is NH7? Is the traffic very bad? I could never even dream of driving NH17 (Mumbai-Goa Highway) because of tehterrible traffic.

We went there on a road trip and my friend drove the car from Bangalore to Munnar. If you are not scared of hairpin bends and winding roads, you can definitely drive on your own

Staying in Bangalore for a long time can get a bit monotonous since you might have to be engrossed in your work most of the time. And to make it even more exciting, you can take a road trip to Kerala from Bangalore.

Things to keep in mind when you visit to Kerala from Bangalore

Distance between Bangalore and Kerala:- 

The distance from Bangalore to Kerala is 462.6 km if you take the NH 44 and NH 544 route. If you travel via Mysore Road, the distance is 359.7 km. Though the distance is more through NH 44 and NH 544 route, it will hardly take 8 hours and 40 minutes for you to reach the state due to the great road condition. There are so many routes to reach Kerala from Bangalore that you can choose any that suits you. In case of any confusion, you can take a look at the Bangalore to Kerala route map. 

Best time to travel:- 

The best time to travel to Kerala from Bangalore is from September to February. You can enjoy the backwaters in this season, as you do not have to be bothered about the humidity and hot weather. And to see the lush greenery of Kerala and the entire land drenched in rain, you can visit God’s Own Country between June and August. However, for an amazing road trip, sticking to the winter season is the safest bet.

So, if you are now all excited about your Bangalore to Kerala trip, here is a guide for you:

Bangalore to munnar, munnar to thiruvananthapuram, thiruvananthapuram to alappuzha, alappuzha to kochi, kochi to kozhikode, kozhikode to bangalore.

The place that you can first visit in Kerala on this trip is Munnar. You can start your journey a bit early in the morning as it will take around 10 hours to reach the beautiful place in Kerala. In between these two places, you will cross many towns such as Dharmapuri, Salem, Erode, and Tiruppur. You will reach Salem in the afternoon hours, and can have your lunch there. There are in fact so many tourist attractions that you will find in this route, and some of them include Hogenakkal Falls, Thirumoorthy Dam, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, and Lakkam Waterfalls. You can stop by these attractions and enjoy the mesmerizing views of each of them. 

After staying in Munnar for a night, you can start your journey the next day for Thiruvananthapuram. This is one of the most beautiful routes that you will travel through as you will get to see several natural wonders of the Western Ghats. There are some narrow stretches in the route; therefore, you need to drive very carefully. The places that you will come across while traveling through this route include Idukki, Adoor, Kottarakkara, Kilimanoor, and Thiruvananthapuram. In this route, you can find some of the best places to visit in Kerala, such as Cardamom Hills, Ramakkalmedu, Perunthenaruvi Falls, and Kilimanoor Palace. In fact, in Perunthenaruvi Falls, you can go for a trek along the Pampa River. To explore all these places, you definitely need some time; thus, you may have to take a break at Thiruvananthapura overnight.

This trip will not be very tiring as you can reach Alappuzha from Thiruvananthapuram in just four hours. The stopovers in this route should not be missed as the popular stopovers include Kollam Beach, Munroe Island, Ashtamudi Lake, and Thangassery Light House. You can enjoy the spectacular beauty of each of these attractions. 

To reach Kochi from Alappuzha, you have to cross two popular towns, Kottayam and Kumarakom. You can take a break at Kottayam and visit Vagamon to indulge in activities like rock climbing, paragliding, and trekking. And located very near to Vagamon, there is Illikkal Kallu, where you can go trekking. Another attraction in this route is Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary where you can spot various species of birds.

The places that you will find between these two cities are Chalakudy, Thrissur, and Tirur. You can see many temples and cultural gems on this route. The majority of the temples are located in Thrissur. The two popular stopovers in this route include the over 1000 years old Vadakkunnathan Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, and Paramekavu Bhagavathy Temple, dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy.

It will take you around 8 hours to reach Bangalore from Kozhikode. The two main towns that you can stop at on this route are Mandya and Ramanagara. While you are on your back home, you can explore attractions such as Nagarhole Tiger Reserve and trek through Ramadevara Betta Hill of Ramanagara.

There are several things to do on Bangalore to Kerala trip. From hiking and trekking to admire the picturesque beauty of the hills, from enjoying the view of splendid sunrise and sunset at the beaches to visiting some of the most famous temples in India, you can actually do a lot of things on this amazing trip.

Weather In Kerala

The weather in Kerala in December was pleasant and not as cold as we expected it to be. Munnar was a bit cold and it is a must to carry woolen clothes to Munnar in the winter months. Thekkady and Kovalam being beach destinations also experienced pleasant weather.

How To Reach Kerala

We traveled from Bangalore to Munnar by train. Firstly we took a train from Bangalore to Kochi. It took around 11 hours to reach Kochi and we were there by 6:00 AM. Our cab driver was waiting for us at the Kochi Railway Station from where we drove to Munnar. It was a 3 and a half hours journey and we reached Munnar by 12:00 AM.

Experiences On Our 7 Days Trip To Kerala

Our Kerala travel had a lot of experiences that made our trip a memorable affair. Some of the best experiences include:

1. Our Munnar Adventures

Munnar was one of the most serene and beautiful destinations in Kerala. We were mesmerized to see the beautiful tea plantations and the lush greenery all around. The tea museum was a great place to visit and we were totally taken by the different types of aromatic teas available here. We also got to watch the process of how tea is made and we also bought some for ourselves. Altogether, it was an amazing experience for us on our vacation. Our Munnar adventures also included a visit to the Eravikulam National Park by bus. One of the best experiences on this trip was the car boat ride in the serene surroundings of the Park. We loved the views and time that we spent together here.

2. Thrills At The Periyar Tiger Reserve

A walk at night through the lush jungle of Periyar Tiger Reserve was a thrilling experience. Though we were not able to spot the tigers, we found deers and other animals and had never before in our lives dared to visit the jungle in the night, but truly it was a must-have experience.

3. Relaxing On The Kovalam Beach

Beaches have always been our thing as the serenity of the place makes us feel relaxed and rejuvenated. Our visit to the Kovalam beach was one of the major highlights of the trip. We spent an entire evening on the beach and were happy to have spent some time alone with each other after a long time. The lashing of the waves on the shore and the cool breeze made our visit worth it.

4. Adventures At The Thiruvananthapuram Zoo

On the last days of our trip, we decided to explore the Trivandrum Zoo. With its natural beauty and lush surroundings, a walk through the Zoo was truly worth it. Here we saw a lot of animals including deers, antelopes, and other wild animals. Hereafter, the Shangumugham beach was our last spot on this trip. We relaxed and enjoyed the peaceful environment around us and hereafter began our journey back home.

Places To Stay In Kerala

Unlike other times, this time our major focus was also on the properties that we chose to stay at on our holiday. We preferred 4 or 5-star accommodations and booked some of the best properties here.

Munnar: Rivulet Resort is one of our accommodations when staying in Munnar. The location of the resort was very beautiful and serene and we were also taken for a small trek while staying at this resort. The staff at the hotel was very cooperative and greeted us warmly. We also saw the cardamom plants while staying at this resort.

Thekkady: Spices Lap Thekkady was our accommodation when in the city. Our stay at the treehouse was a bliss. We always wanted to experience this stay and it was an amazing experience. Later we stayed in deluxe rooms at the hotel and the accommodation was very comfortable and cozy.

Kovalam: Hotel Jasmine Palace was an epitome of luxury and the closeness to the beach was what made it more convenient. We could walk down to the beach anytime and spend quality time together.

Kerala Food

As, we both are very specific about food, we preferred not experimenting much with it. As breakfast was already included in your package, we chose to dine at the onsite restaurants of our hotels. For lunch, we went to some local restaurants but ordered North Indian food only and it was quite good. Besides that, we tasted a Kerala cuisine Parotta and it was really good.

Shopping In Kerala

We did a lot of handicraft shopping in Kerala. The goods are not very expensive and are a good option for souvenirs for the tourists. Banana chips are a must-buy when shopping in Kerala and we also bought a lot of them for our relatives and friends. Those who love silk products, you will find the best quality of silk here affordable prices.

Personal Expenses

Besides the cost of our package, we had an overhead expense of around 15 to 20k which included our shopping, food and other expenses.

• Since I and my husband are beach lovers, the time we spent at the Kovalam beach was the best highlight of our trip.
• Boating to Povar was also an awesome experience. The water of the Arabian Sea meets the freshwater of the Neyyar river and it is a sight worth witnessing.

Bangalore to Wayanad Road Trip Experience | A 2022 Memorable Wayanad Blog

Bangalore to Wayanad blog- We just returned after a fantastic road trip from Bangalore to Wayanad and our summer holidays in a beautiful resort called Abad Brookside at Wayanad.

WHY WANAYAD BLOG?

Wayanad, one of the best-recommended tourist destinations in India ,  is a hill station located in Kerala and is close to the border of Karnataka. Located in the southern tip of the Deccan plateau.

Wayanad is a perfect holiday destination in Kerala. Surrounded by hills, mountains, valleys, dense forests, and plantations, there is no better place in a short driving distance from Bangalore for a relaxing holiday. 

With a 5-6 hours drive from Bangalore, one gets to enjoy the best of both states.

While most of the drive through the Bangalore – Mysore road was pretty much through the well-built highways, as soon as we approach the Kerala border, the scene changes completely with the lush green blessing of nature.

ROAD TRIP FROM BANGALORE TO WAYANAD  

We love road trips. That’s the best time we get to enjoy with kids since they are locked up in the car and have limited access to other spoiler toys like laptops.

We have been planning a few road trips lately but didn’t work out primarily because of the schooling of our children.

Finally, the perfect time came up. Schools were closed for the summer holidays and my son had just completed his 10th. He scored amazingly good in his 10th exams and we wanted to spend a few days together to celebrate.

After a few discussions and debates, we chose a trip to Bangalore and Wayanad.

I will write a few separate travel stories about our experience in Bangalore and Wayanad but this one is all about our amazing driving experience in the Bangalore – Wayanad route.

CHECKING BANGALORE-WAYANAD ROUTE

Usually, we don’t plan for road trips. The decisions are usually made at the last minute and we pack up and get started the very next day. It wasn’t very different this time as well. The decision was made just the day before the trip.

I quickly verified the insurance documents, filled fuel, made sure the spare tire has proper air pressure, and renewed the emission certificate. Also did some quick shopping to ensure kids have enough stuff to eat while driving even though stopping by the restaurant is one of the attractions for the kids on the road trips.

Kids were excited when we talked about Bangalore since the Snow city in Bangalore was one of the places they wanted to visit for quite a long time.

Also, we looked for the best resorts in Wayanad and shortlisted Abad Brookside located at Vythiri after considering the ambiance, amenities, etc.

One of the main demands from the kids was, the resort should have a swimming pool and indoor/outdoor sports facilities.  We parents wanted a very calm and relaxing atmosphere. Brookside met our requirements perfectly well and we were glad that we picked it for our holidays in Wayanad.

BANGALORE TO WAYANAD ROUTES

There are 3 routes from Bangalore to Wayanad and all three of them go via Mysore and have about the same distance.

• Route 1 : Bangalore – Mysore – Hunsur- Nagarhole – Kutta – Kartikulam – Mananthavady
• Route 2 : Bangalore – Mysore – HD Kote – Bavali – Kartikulam – Mananthavady
• Route 3 : Bangalore – Mysore – Gundlupet – Muthanga (Bandipur forest) – Sulthan Bathery

Since our goal was to enjoy the drive, we chose the most scenic route – Route #3 via Bandipur forest.

Our original plan was to start from Bangalore early in the morning at about 4 am so that we can reach the Bandipur forest entrance by 6 am when the gate opens for vehicles.

The advantage of entering the forest in the early morning is, we have a much higher chance of spotting animals that are still roaming around until the roads get busy with vehicles.

& WE GOT LATE

However, we got a bit late and so decided to push our travel to the evening so that we can spot some animals which come close to the roads at sunset.

We started from Bangalore in the afternoon. It was probably the wrong decision to travel in the afternoon since the roads in Bangalore were crowded. It took a while to exit the crowded city limits. Even after entering the Bangalore-Mysore Express Highway, the roads were full of slow-moving vehicles all over.

Our first stop was at Taj Biryani Paradise for a late lunch. The name made us think that they will have a lot of choices of Biryani but had just one type, even though they had a variety of other food. However, it was very good food, and everyone enjoyed the lunch.

We reached the Mysore area by around 4 pm. To skip the city traffic, we took the ring road that goes around Mysore city and that turned out to be a good decision. We stopped by a coffee shop at the ring road to grab some food before we entered the forest area.

NOTE: Bandipur forest road is closed between 9 pm to 6 am and no vehicles can drive through the forest during this time for the safety of animals as well as travellers.

NIGHT DRIVING THROUGH THE BANDIPUR FOREST

This was the most interesting part of our Bangalore to Wayanad road trip. We reached the Bandipur Forest area by evening. Even though there was a toll booth just before the forest checkpoint, we could not find anyone collecting the toll. I think the toll booth was not operational yet.

We expected some checking and security at the forest checkpoint, but it was just a small station with a single forest officer casually standing in the road and watching the vehicles passing by. We didn’t have to stop the car since he didn’t seem to pay attention.

We entered the forest limits by 5:30 pm. The ambiance completely changed once we entered the silent, calm, and dark forest area. The roads were extremely good, and we tempted to drive too fast but there were animal crossing warning signs everywhere and we too didn’t want an encounter with animals.

We decided to drive slowly looking for animals on both sides of the roads. Kids were very excited when they saw the first flock of deer near the roads. They counted about 50 before we passed the area but there were much more than that.

WHAT WE SAW DURING OUR DRIVE THROUGH BANDIPUR

It was like a zoo where we find a lot of animals trapped in small areas. But nature didn’t disappoint us. We saw a lot of deers, sambar deers, and wild elephants during our 2-hour long drive through the Bandipur forest and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary.

In addition, a lot of monkeys were spotted at various places, especially close to the villages on the Kerala side. If you are a bird watcher, you will see a lot of rare birds but stopping the car in the forest is not allowed;

so, you may miss the photographs. We clicked a lot of photos of the animals from the car though.

FINALLY REACHING WAYANAD

We exited the forest area and entered the Sultan Bathery town by around 7 pm. It took us about 7 hours from Bangalore to reach Wayanad. We spent quite a lot of time searching for pit stops for coffee, snacks, lunch, and just relaxing. If you drive without any major stops, you can cover the Bangalore – Wayanad route in about 5 hours or even less.

BEAUTIFUL WAYANAD

Wayanad is a very green destination and the entire district of Wayanad is very scenic with a lot of trees and hills all over. In fact, even after exiting the reserve forests, we didn’t feel much difference on the Kerala side since the places were very green and lush after the summer rains Kerala received this year.

The most exciting part of our Bangalore to Wayanad road trip was our scenic drive through the Bandipur forests. But once we entered the Wayanad region, almost every place was scenic with lush green forests.

REACHING OUR WAYANAD STAY

We reached Lakkidi by late evening and we were tired even though we all enjoyed the entire drive to its best. It was drizzling when we reached the resort. While we were driving from Bangalore, we received a call from the resort mentioning that some road repair work is going on in the road to the resort.

They suggested we park our car in a safe private property near the highway, and they arranged a jeep for us to travel to the resort from the parking area.

The driver helped us to unload our baggage from the car and moved them all to the jeep. Because of the road work, kids got a free off-road jeep drive!

ABAD BROOKSIDE WAYANAD

When we reached the resort, we got a fantastic treat for the eyes. When the drizzling stopped, the entire area was covered with mist, which suddenly came from nowhere. There wasn’t any sign of mist until a few minutes ago.

We stayed in the reception for some time watching the mist passing through the woods. Lakkidi is one of the most scenic areas in Wayanad which gets covered with magical mists unexpectedly and throughout the season.

In a few minutes, we completed the check-in and moved to our private cottage along the brook (now we know the reason why the property is named ‘Brookside’). Our entire stay in Brookside resort was very relaxing and enjoyable. Kids enjoyed the swimming pool, badminton, table tennis, caroms, and other indoor/outdoor games.

BANGALORE To WAYANAD ROAD TRIP TIPS

Here are a few important tips to keep in mind when driving from Bangalore on a weekend trip or for holidays:

• Plan your trip so that you will exit the Bandipur forest road before the closing time. You cannot drive through the forests after 9 pm. Once the roads are closed, the gates will be opened only at 6 am.
• If you prefer to go by bus, you can reach Wayanad and rent a self-drive rental car. Self-drive rental cars are becoming popular and there are many options available. Check out this list of rental car agencies in Kerala . Some of them have offices in Wayanad and will deliver the car to you at the bus stop.
• The best time to spot animals is early morning. If you can reach the forest entrance just before 6 am and if you are one of the first few vehicles to enter the forest, you will have much higher chances of spotting animals.
• You won’t find any shops or restaurants in the forest limits. Carry snacks and food especially if you have kids with you.
• Do not exit your vehicle in the forest area. Animals may approach you unexpectedly and avoid taking such risks since help may not reach you immediately in case something goes wrong.
• Follow big trucks if you notice wild elephants close to the road. Even though the elephants found here are not very aggressive, it is always better to be on the safer side.

if you are going to Wayanad from Bangalore, its not that hilly , but ys a forest area, I think a basic driving skill is needed to go Wayanad, the area in around Wayanad to Kozhikode is hilly.

When did you book the hotal room?

I too took the same route while visiting Wayanad from Bangalore. Only thing is we started quite early morning by 6 and reached the Bandipur National Park by 11 Am. The drive through the picturesque jungle was really fantastic. We could only spot few Deers only. In hour am we reached Sulthan Bathery. The Wayanad is indeed a fantastic hill station. The lush green hills are amazing. Chembra peak in Wayanad is so fascinating I could not take my eyes out. I took some 50 photos of the peak and hours together standing looking at that grassy peak. The hills, valleys and the roads all are just something we could not forget Wayanad. Your information will be really helpful for all those plan a trip to Wayanad. Thanks.

You can also cover Bangalore to Munnar distance by train. However, there are no direct trains to Munnar. The nearest railway station is in Kochi, which is about 120 km from Munnar. There are about 10 trains that run between these two cities, of which four are daily trains. The fastest train is the KCVL HUMSAFAR (16320), which takes about nine and half hours to reach Kochi.
