Circle Line Cruises - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Circle Line Best of NYC Cruise Review

Cross under 20 bridges and see all five boroughs of New York City

Godsfriendchuck/Wikimedia Commons/CC BY 4.0

Since 1945, Circle Line has shown visitors New York City from the city's major waterways. The three-hour Full Island Cruise offers visitors a chance to circumnavigate the entire island of Manhattan, and see many of New York City's popular attractions , including the Statue of Liberty , Ellis Island , South Street Seaport and the Empire State Building .

About Circle Line's Best of NYC Cruise

Circling Manhattan on the Full Island Cruise is a great way to get an overview of the layout of Manhattan and New York City. It's no wonder that over 60 million passengers have ridden on Circle Line's various cruises -- they offer a unique and manageable way to get an overview of New York City's many attractions.

Throughout the three-hour cruise, a tour guide narrates through the boat's speaker system, pointing out important landmarks, sharing trivia and highlighting some of the history of New York City. The trip includes a closeup pass of the Statue of Liberty -- perfect for picture taking, and for many visitors on a short visit this is a great opportunity to view the popular attraction as part of a larger tour. Seeing downtown Manhattan from the water is truly remarkable, as is discovering the northern reaches of Manhattan, which are surprisingly lush and green.

Three-hours is a bit on the long side to be on the boat -- though there is plenty of space for walking about, children might be happier on the shorter 2-hour semi-circle cruise.

Essential Information about the Circle Line's Best of NYC Cruise

  • The sightseeing cruise leaves from Pier 83 between 42nd and 43rd Streets at 12th Avenue
  • Mass Transit to Circle Line Pier : A/C/E, 1/2/3, N/R/Q, 7 or S to 42nd St./Times Square - change to the M42 or M50 Bus running along 42nd Street which will take you to the 42nd Street Pier
  • Circle Line's Full Island Cruise is available with The New York Pass and CityPass for a $5 upgrade.
  • Circle Line Payment : Cash and Major Credit Cards
  • Circle Line's Full Island Cruise Schedule - cruises are offered daily throughout the year, with more options during the summer and just a single sailing during the colder winter months
  • During peak times tickets sell out, especially if you have your heart set on a particular cruise, so plan to arrive early to buy your tickets or be flexible about the cruise you go on.
  • The ship is not designed to accommodate handicapped people -- there are narrow stairs down to the bathrooms, etc., but the crew will do what they can to accommodate you.

Helpful Tips for Circle Line's Full Island Cruise

  • Concessions, including beer and wine, are available on board, but you can bring your own food and non-alcoholic drinks. The souvenir mug with free refills of soda is a good value.
  • They begin boarding the boat about 30 minutes before departure -- you'll want to arrive in time to buy your tickets (which could take 15 minutes, especially on weekends and school breaks) to be near the front of the line. The most desirable seats are along the left-hand side of the boat, as that is the side closest to Manhattan throughout the ride.
  • Wear sunscreen if you plan to sit outside or stand at the bow of the boat -- despite the breeze, you can get quite a bit of sun.
  • After the cruise departs, they open up the bow of the boat for standing room only -- it's worth checking out the view from there, despite the crowds.
  • Bathrooms on board tend to be cleanest early in the trip -- plan accordingly.
  • You can book tickets online . You also will need to exchange the ticket voucher for a boarding pass in the ticketing line once you arrive, so there's really no advantage to buying your tickets online.

the basic landmark cruise is enough, no need to pay more to do the "best of NYC cruise"

we bought the C3 pass, and you can choose to take the Circle Line the landmark cruise (as I remember), and you can also pay $5 more to upgrade to "Best of NYC cruise", then you can tour the uptown part, to complete the loop, but then we discover that it's quite boring in the uptown part, the attractions you need to see are already in the "landmark cruise", actually, you no need to pay money to upgrade to "Best NYC cruise", it's just boring for that extra part.

We are very used to going on speed boats & getting wet but this experience was ridiculous- we think the driver did not gauge it right & when this (at least) 10ft wall of water fell in on us and completely saturated us (through to underwear & bags that were shut) we couldn’t enjoy the rest of our plans for the day & headed back home on a 2 hour train journey- still absolutely soaked when we got home - the driver looked at me from the bridge - he knew he had messed up - would never pay for the privilege of getting absolutely saturated at a cost of over €100 plus we couldn’t go on & enjoy the other stuff we should have done that day

The food was subpar, the music was too loud, the ship parked too far away from the fireworks, and the fireworks were viewable only from one short end of the ship that all I saw were people's backs and heads (and their phones). I ended up rewatching the fireworks later on YouTube and that was way better. Very much not worth it.

Fantastic - especially for kids. Energetic ride that everyone loves. Prepare to get wet which was a welcome surprise from the heat 10/10

We went on this cruise as it was included in our New York pass and it ended up being one of our highlights, a two hour cruise and a great way to see all the buildings and the Statue of Liberty from the river. The tour guide was so knowledgeable and entertaining. He told us that we’d get a good photo of the statue on the way back and we really did, she lit up just as we passed (a fluke but still very cool). The company have a few boats so don’t be put off at the queues as they soon go down once boarding starts and loads of people fit on. You need to get a ticket from the office then get in line. Well worth it, probably wouldn’t be much fun in the rain though.

best circle line cruise reddit

Well organized , we boarded quickly and the boat was clean, staff friendly. Tony, the guide, was personable, although strict to not let anyone without a wristband sit in the premier seating section (it was half empty). Most of the commentary was about Manhattan, understandably. He did take questions, although, if you weren't sitting inside you had no idea what the question was - he could have repeated the question for everyone's benefit. He liked to throw a few political shots, I was surprised that he was willing to show which 'side' he was and also didn't think it was necessary. Overall a great way to see NYC in 2 and 1/2 hours.
