Best Time To Visit Kodaikanal

What is the best time to visit kodaikanal.

Kodaikanal is lovingly referred to as The Princess of Hill stations. And boy, does it take this title seriously! Built around an exotic star shaped lake, the region exudes ethereal charm like that of fairy-tales. The best time to visit Kodaikanal is from October - June, however, the weather remains a bit chilly during December and January. Cliffs, valleys, waterfalls and forests, carved out of nature’s nooks and crannies, band together as one. Kodaikanal can be visited through the year, but the ideal time is in the winter between October and March. The summer and monsoon months from April to June and between July and September respectively, also make for a good Kodaikanal trip.

Come sun or rain, the region glitters with sugar and spice! Hence, it is not surprising that people travel far and wide to partake in its natural splendour. However, this South Indian hill station has so much more to offer. From history to culture and recreation, tourists will find multifarious offerings throughout the year. Not only do you have the opportunity to enjoy a plethora of activities such as boating, cycling and trekking, but you can also navigate nature’s bounty. The annual Kodaikanal Summer Festival thrives with eclectic offerings such as flower shows, kabaddi tournaments, Rangoli competitions and Bharatanatyam performances. Things to know before the visit – As this is mid tourist season and a popular time to travel, accommodation and tour prices will be steeper. Be sure to make your bookings well in advance, so that there are no last-minute hassles. Be wary of the hustle bustle that is synonymous with this season. Lastly, take note of the elevation of this destination and all that comes with it.

Tips – The summer months, although not extreme, can get rather warm. Hence, pack light cotton clothing to prevent stickiness and irritation of skin. SPF 30+ Sunscreen will aid you in preventing tans. Throw in a hat and some sunglasses too! Lastly, keep hydrated through the day and consume balanced meals.

Things to know before the visit – Monsoon is deemed as low tourist season, as the rains can sometimes make it precarious to be out and about. In-fact, there is risk of landslides occurring during this time. On a lighter note, this is the best time to optimise on affordable prices offered by hotels and travel agencies.

Tips – You never know what the monsoon season will bring! As such, carry an umbrella, windcheater and rain proof footwear. Make sure your attire is comfortable and protective. Shelter all electronic gadgets in plastic bags, you don’t want to be sorry. Don’t forget to apply that all important mosquito repellent. Lastly, stay clear from unhygienic street food stalls.

Tips – Winters in Kodaikanal fluctuate from pleasant to extremely cold. As such, it is imperative to carry long sleeved shirts, pants, socks, sweaters and a warm jacket. If you’re someone who is inclined to feeling cold, throw in a scarf and some vests too! It’s always good to carry moisturizer and lip balm during this season.

Kodaikanal – complete travel guide.

Girl Sitting At Dolphins Point In Kodaikanal

Centred around a star-shaped lake and bounded by the verdure of evergreen forests, is the crowned Princess of hill stations – Kodaikanal.

I had left for Kodai with a bag packed with warm clothes and tons of expectations. Little did I know that this gorgeous strip of hills, covered under a blanket of mist, would go beyond all my expectations. The hill station nestled in the Western Ghats is surely a mystical beauty to behold.

Set across some rich granite cliffs, the hill station has a touch of magic in every little feature of it.

I chose to go old school by exploring this valley’s charm through bicycles, rowing boats and rickshaw rides while jamming to Tamil classics. It was a whole different mood and a completely new experience to me, but with the most welcoming aura to it.

Table of Contents

It’s among the finest hill stations of Tamil Nadu, and definitely one of its kind. Kodaikanal is nestled in the Palani hill ranges and comes under the administration of Dindigul district.

Why it’s a must-visit?

There are two factors that’d never fail to bring you back to Kodaikanal. The homemade chocolates and the rare Kurinji flowers.

Kurinji grows once in every twelve years and mushrooms over a large expanse of land. Speckled in bluish and purple shades, they can be found growing around the Kodai lake and the hilly regions. The bluish appearance then paved the way for the name “Nilgiri hills” (Blue mountains). If you have the luck on your side, you’d also be able to witness Kodaikanal in its full bloom during the Kurinji year.

Without any such time barriers though, are the finger-licking good homemade chocolates. Get yourself a box of these chocolates that are rich in taste and cheap in price.

How to reach?

The closest airport to Kodaikanal is the Madurai airport. There are three other international airports in the state as well which are also at close proximity from the hill station. There are regular flights, both international and domestic, touching down at these airports. From there on you would be lead through a properly connected network of public transport.

Distance from Madurai airport – 130 km

Distance from Coimbatore airport- 180 km

Distance from Trichy airport – 199 km

Distance from Chennai airport – 500 km

At Kodai road, about 80 km from the hill station is the nearest railway station. Yet another easier alternative is the Dindigul station which is located more around the urban spaces. It’s a comparatively bigger city with more connecting public transport, so getting around from here is an easier task.

There are also stations with more frequent trains around Coimbatore and Madurai. Connecting almost every major cities including Bangalore, Chennai, Trivandrum and Hyderabad.

Distance from Dindigul station – 96 km

Distance from Madurai station – 115 km

Distance from Virudunagar station – 152 km

Distance from Coimbatore station – 169 km

Tourism is one of Kodaikanal’s major economic source, and so they have well-paved roads and remarkable road network. The roads also take you through many other infamous tourist destinations such as Palani, Theni, Madurai, Kumuli, Chennai, and so on.

From hubs such as Bengaluru and Kochi, Kodaikanal is accessible through a 7-8 hour drive.

In case you opt for public transport, enquire about the several options, timings and fares to have a comfortable journey. Buses are the most convenient and would not burn a hole in your pocket as well.

Distance from Munnar – 166 km (4 hr 40 mins)

Distance from Coimbatore – 172 km (4 hr 10 mins)

Distance from Ooty – 250 km (6 hr 15 mins)

Distance from Kochi – 299 km (6 hr 50 mins)

Distance from Bangalore – 469 km (9 hr 19 mins)

Distance from Chennai – 529 km (9 hr 30 mins)

Best time to travel

Kodaikanal is a trip that you can plan at any month of the year. The high altitude location enjoys a subtropical highland climate with chilling weather that’s unique to Kodaikanal. Even when the low lying plains of Tamil Nadu experience extreme heat, Kodaikanal is pleasant with not much fluctuations.

So you could plan your trip based on other factors, such as the month of festivities. A suggestive ideal period to travel based on that would be December to May.

Winters and the heavy rainfall shimmer down for the summer blooms. May witnesses the oncoming of the Annual Summer festival adorned by flower shows and thrilling boat races, which would be an exciting experience.

Top 10 Places to visit

1. bear shola falls.

Flowing graciously in the Reserve forest of Kodaikanal is this untouched waterfalls. Stories revolving around the purity of these waters go ages back. It’s believed that a bear would wander from the forests to this spot to drink the freshwater. This story was then celebrated and became a part of the name of the falls.

The falls flow from the Parappar river, which is an ideal spot for trekking as well. If you want to watch the tiered cascade in its liveliest forms, make a visit during the monsoon downpours.  It’d be a sight that’d sweep you off your feet, and that’s guaranteed.

2. Berijam Lake

Among the cleanest and unruffled lakes in Kodaikanal. While the lake is open to the horde of tourists, it maintains its pristine beauty by being one of the plastic-free zones around here.

Lying within the forest areas, this lake also requires prior permission for visiting, which limits the number of people who come by as well. It’s a refreshing sight to the sore eyes and among the most serene spots around Kodai.

Berijam Lake is also an ideal spot for activities such as boating and fishing.

3. Kodai Lake (Kodaikanal Lake)

Shaped in the form of a star is this man-made wonder, located about 3 km from the main bus depot. Spread across 60 acres of land, this brainchild of Sir Vere Henry Levinge was constructed to be the major tourist attraction around here.

It’s a timeless beauty that you can explore at any time of the day. Horse-riding around the lake in mornings, paddling a boat across it by evenings or even sitting by the reflections of the night lights. Kodaikanal Lake is sure to captivate you in its surrealness.

Especially during the winters, the misty fog settles in and makes the lake look like a dream come true.

4. Bryant park

Other than tourism, Kodaikanal also takes its agriculture and vegetation quite seriously. To understand this better and explore the Kodaikanal blossoms, take a trip to the Bryant Park.

Barely a 10-minute walk from the lake is the kaleidoscopic views of the park. The main attraction in this park is the glasshouse that is home to several exotic florals, ferns and other ornamental plants.

Even if you wish to learn more about these plants, the park has got it all covered. Acting more or less as a demonstrative centre for Ornamental Horticulture, you’ll be familiarised with activities such as pruning, budding, grafting, and so on. Relax amidst the soft greens and florals while learning about them in-depth.

5. Coakers Walk

A pathway through cotton-like clouds of Kodaikanal. Constructed way back in the 1870s this place sure looks like a stairway to heaven. Stroll around here during the hours of sunrise and catch the first rays shining through the cluster of clouds.

Perfect for the morning and evening walks, covering the entire stretch at an altitude of 7000 ft gives you the unmatched aerial view of the valley. This also includes the view of Theni, Madurai, the dolphin nose and of the adjoining Valley of Pambar River.

If you happen to come by during a clear sky day, to have a look through the telescope near the main gate.

6. Dolphin’s Nose

Yet another vantage point giving you a bird’s eye view of the mountains and the lush greens. Elevated at a height of  6600 feet, it’s an easy trek up to the rocky escarpment that’s shaped in the form of a dolphin’s nose.

With clear azure skies above your head and a panoramic emerald scenery below, it is beautiful beyond words could describe.

If you visit this place with an informed guide or local, they would help you spot the Periyakulam valley and the eternal Vaigai Lake.

7. Pillar Rocks viewpoint

The adventure seekers destination. Huge cliffs vertically aligned amidst dense and misty rainforests. Pillar Rocks Viewpoint is a unique structure that looks over the sky while standing tall at 400 ft. It’s mostly covered in a humongous duvet of mist and clouds.

As the clouds clear away, you’d get an even mesmerising sight of the peak along with the cross that’s hoisted on top of the mountain. The rocks have a mysterious aura to it and you’ll uncover new delights at every nook and corner of this viewpoint.

One such view adding colour to this ethereal cavern is the small expanse of garden around it with vividly coloured flowers.

8. Guna Caves

This cave hit fame after the Tamil movie Guna. People flocked in to explore the picturesque yet dangerous caves and weren’t disappointed even a bit.

Located at close proximity to the Pillar Rocks Road, it was earlier known as Devil’s kitchen because of its spooky undertones. Naturally formed between the boulders of the mountains at an altitude of 2230 metres, the narrow ravines are now closed for public visit, due to the chances of suffering a free fall.

You can still trek around the pine forests and the roots that remain entangled around the caves. It forms a sort of disclaimer to the kind of things you may find in the cave if you walk through it. From blind spots to bats, it’s a live haunted house offering the most thrilling experience.

9. Green Valley View (Suicide Point)

While talking about free falls, the old suicide point definitely makes it to the list. For all the right reasons though. Renamed as the Green Valley view to change the perception around this place, it’s one of the most beautiful spots around Kodai. The steep drop from 5000 ft. offers an unparalleled aerial view of the valleys surrounding the Vaigai Dam.

It has been bounded securely by fences and strict monitoring has been going on to maintain the valley’s purpose of being a vantage point. Visit during early morning hours to watch it mystically covered in the morning mist.

10. Silver Cascade

Formed as a result of the overflowing Kodai Lake, this waterfall is the most ideal way to wrap up the day.

A lot of people stop by here enchanted by its silver threads gushing gracefully. As the waterfall is located right around the roadside, it becomes a refreshing pitstop for travellers.

Take a swim around these chilling waters, and relax your limbs for a while. This is of course before splashing it around and challenging your friends to the endpoint!

There are several roadside stalls that offer freshly plucked fruits and veggies that you can eat while peacefully enjoying the beauty of the falls.

  • There’s no airport around the region, so you’ll have to plan extensively. Since there’s good connectivity it’s a lot easier if you knew the routes you’d be taking.
  • Kodaikanal’s weather would have your teeth chattering in the cold. Carry woollens no matter what month of the year you’re planning your visit.
  • In case you plan on trekking or hiking at Kodai, pack a raincoat and umbrella too for the unexpected downpours.
  • Check up the timings of many of the tourist spots across Kodai. Especially the Green Valley (suicide point), which gets covered in the mist at odd hours. Since you might not be able to see the depth or altitude, it’s recommended you do not make visits when the view is not clear.
  • At the higher altitudes, there’s a higher scope for dehydration and chapped skin. So carry enough water, and some moisturiser \ balm to stop your skin from breaking unhealthily.

Kodaikanal has a rich history that dates back to the 17th century when it was ruled by the Palaiyar tribal people. The British discovered the little town in the early 19th century. Due to its cool climate and scenic beauty, the British established Kodaikanal as a hill station in 1845.

Kodaikanal became a summer retreat for British officers and their families. They built several churches, bungalows, and parks. Picture-perfect memories are made in picture-perfect scenery and this perfection is found in  Kodaikanal . A place as diverse as the meaning of its name, this hill station is known as the Princess of Hill Stations, not for nothing!

Set in the lush hills of Tamil Nadu’s Dindigul district, the city of Kodaikanal is a popular tourist destination yet there is something mysterious and untouched about the place that keeps pulling you back to its loving embrace. The city came to existence because the Kodaikanal Weather was the best retreat from the sultry summer for the British who needed cooler weather. With the Western Ghats’ Palani Hills forming the ideal cloud-capped peaks and the rolling green valley being a salve for sore eyes, no wonder Kodaikanal is often considered a gift from the gods.

Plan the trip

kodai-lake

Beauty like Palani Hills and the Kodaikanal Weather is something that one must experience for the place is not just a summer retreat but offers so much more in terms of culture, natural sights, and architecture and has something for everyone to connect with and enjoy – be it boating, hiking, trekking, camping or just enjoying the fresh air that cleanses and heals your heart. No matter how you land in Tamil Nadu – if you are travelling from another state or country – the ultimate journey into the city is completed by road. So if you are coming from Madurai airport (120 km from Kodaikanal) or have hopped down the Kodai road railway station (100 km away from the city) you need to board a TNSTC bus or you can hire a car and zoom through the road enjoying the wind in your hair and the green sight to lift your blues and let the Kodaikanal weather make you forget about everything else. Find the best hotels in Kodaikanal this summer by making advance bookings.

If you want to escape not only the heat but also want to reconnect with yourself then a trip to Kodaikanal should be ideal for you. No matter what season you decide to visit, one thing is for sure that the Kodaikanal Weather will appease you no matter what. The best hotels in Kodaikanal are found near the Kodai Lake.

Each season has its own charm

Kodaikanal

A hill station in the south is bound to have pleasant weather yet the Kodaikanal Weather does have some highs and lows in terms of temperature and that does affect the activities on offer. A lot also depends upon the people who are planning the trip. For the lovers of chilly seasons, late monsoons and the winter is the best time to visit to enjoy the chill in the air and to stroll around or enjoy a hot cup of coffee at Pot Luck or Pastry Corner. Summers are perfect for the souls who prefer milder weather so they can trek without worrying about having to keep switching between feeling cold or too warm. However, each season has its charm, to say the least. Also, the best hotels in Kodaikanal can be found all year around.

Kodaikanal in Summer: (April to June)

Summer (April to June)

Summer is also the best time to visit Kodaikanal as the temperature ranges between 30ºC to 20ºC. The pleasant, refreshing breeze blowing on your face makes it perfect for sightseeing, trekking, cycling, boating, and other outdoor activities. Colourful flowers in full bloom fulfill the desires of nature buffs. It’s the perfect place for a summer sojourn which is why hotels in Kodaikanal are always brimming with tourists in summer. Also, Kodaikanal room booking is there to be done beforehand as the place gets crowded during summer time.

If colorful is what you seek then summer at Kodaikanal is perfect for you. The months of summer starts in March and lasts till June and the Kodaikanal Weather is mild at this time with the temperatures staying between 20 degrees to 30 degrees Celsius and the light breeze makes walking around a pleasant experience. The rivers and lakes are the highlights of this town then. Once you reach Kodai Lake you will recheck your GPS to make sure that you are still in India and haven’t accidentally discovered a site and landed in Scotland. This manmade lake is ideal for boating.

A hike or cycling trip at Croakers Walk must be added to your itinerary when you are visiting Kodai Lake. This beautifully made 1-kilometer walkway is perfect for strolling, cycling, and clicking some memorable shot of yourself or your loved ones. Berijam Lake is not only a famous picnic spot but also has a gothic feel to it with the pine trees looming over making this a perfect setting for horror stories. It did inspire the writer in me to pen a few short stories. The best hotels in Kodaikanal are found near this spot.

Summer is also the perfect time to visit Bryant Park as the Annual Horticulture Show is held in May which showcases beauties like green roses, cacti, and exotic plants from across the globe. The geek in me took me to the Solar Observatory. The building itself is a thing of beauty, surrounded by green hills but the real magic happens inside.

Kodaikanal in Monsoon (July to September)

Monsoon (July to September)

The months of June to September coat the valley in new shades of greens and blues but these shades will uplift your mood. The Kodaikanal Weather during monsoon is wet but if you can bear the chilly breeze then you are in for some splendid sights for the valley comes alive during monsoon, especially the waterfalls. The Silver Cascade Falls is known for a divine look as the silvery water comes gushing down the cliffs. The Vattakanal Falls is a paradise for nature lovers are some of the biggest  reasons to visit Kodaikanal . But, don’t think that the falls are the only attraction for monsoon as the Pine Forest, too, becomes fresh and enchanting. If you are seeking solace or want to enjoy a few moments of togetherness with your beloved then this is the walk you should embark on.

But, the valley receives about 10 inches of rainfall during these months. You need to be careful of the slippery slopes and carry adequate monsoon gear like boots and raincoats. Also, it is best to avoid Pillar Rocks during this time for the boulders become especially slippery. Another thing that you need to be wary of is leeches. The best way to avoid them is wearing long clothes and carrying the salt to get rid of any bug that hitches a ride on your leg.

Kodaikanal in Winter (December to February)

Kodaikanal

Trekkers will love the winters for the Kodaikanal Weather offers some amazing routes and views for the traveler. While the months of winter, which last from December to February, offer up temperatures that dip to 8 degrees, you should carry adequate woolen clothing and extra socks. Of course, at this time a walk around the town, visiting museums and heritage sites becomes pleasant. But, it is the hills that capture the heart and mind of the wandering soul. A winter picnic is a must and the best place to host one is at the Pillar Rocks.

The view from the three vertical boulders – that gave the place its name – is something that should not be missed. Green Valley View (Suicide Point) and the Silent Valley View justify their names and you can capture some heart-winning Instagram pictures. While I did wonder why anyone would want to jump to their death at such a beautiful point, that thought soon left my mind as the panoramic view captivated me. Another interesting spot was the Devil’s Kitchen which is located just 1 km away from the heritage Pillar Rocks. The gorge is always filled with thick clouds which seem as if a large kitchen is in action somewhere in unknown heavenly boudoirs up above!

A trip to forget all woes

Kodaikanal

I decided to take the hike because North hill stations were full for the winter and I wanted some peace. As I came across Kodaikanal in my search I did not think twice but booked my flight and hotel instantly. The decision turned out to be the best for not only did the place make me feel calmer but it also gave me time to enjoy my own company and learn not only about a city less known but also find many hidden gems in my own country.

The Kodaikanal Weather is just perfect for me as I love winters and it was also the best trek of my life. I discovered some love stories and made a few characters of my own to fill the pages of my diary, giving me new perspectives as I came back energized.

Frequently Asked Questions

A cosy, nippy Kodaikanal winter (November through February)

This could well be the best season to visit Kodaikanal . If you are used to cold winters, far less harsh ones, these months will feel like spring any more than winter. With an average temperature oscillating between 30 and 8 degree Celsius, you would surely need a layer of woollens post-sunset up until the early hours. At 30 degree Celsius, the days are warmer and perfect for exploration with a boisterous wind picking up every now and again and bringing down the temperature by a few notches. Covered in a curtain of fog, it is wonderful to be boating on the star-shaped Kodai Lake that hugs the hillsides and puts into perspective life in the hill station. From the waters, you can view the lush Western Ghats and the spray of flowers - magnolias, myrtle, mahogany and rhododendron - on its slopes. Spring to late winter is the time for such flowers aside from cherry blossom to dahlias and wildflowers that carpet the patches of forest. The Bryant Park at this time of the year is heaving with greenery with the water lilies drifting on the still waters of the pond. Don a sweater and a woollen cap and stroll down the Coakers’ Walk, a short walk set in the hillside amid stately oaks and pink rhododendron blossoms overlooking plunging ravines. A major draw for winter visitors to Kodaikanal is the harvest festival of Pongal that happens in January and the hill station just like the rest of Tamil Nadu wears a festive look. Hit the local restaurants and cafes for some Pongal goodies, besides it is a good way to get a peek into the local culture and customs. In December, you can experience Christmas festivities at St Peter’s Church which lies along the Coakers’ Walk. Though owing to the mist that keeps drifting through the day, you might have difficulty catching the sunrise, or for that matter, sunset.

A green and slippery Kodaikanal monsoon (June through October)

While the monsoon peaks between July and August with the rain showers intensifying, a visit to Kodaikanal in this season can be both rewarding and fraught with risks. In this season the temperature hovers between 20 and 33 degree Celsius, making it a tad humid and muggy in the daytime. The rains cloak the Ghats in the loveliest of greens and the lake, the parks and the walks appear glinting with dew, with the scent of fresh leaves mingled with that of the damp earth filling the air. You should avoid venturing for a trek in this season as the hill slopes can turn slippery, besides a sudden heavy downpour can derail your day’s itinerary. If you love the outdoors, a lot of places might become inaccessible due to excessive rainfall. Even the boating service for instance on the Kodai Lake can be suspended till the rains abate. But Kodaikanal is breathtaking and green in the monsoon, and a lover of the rains can simply soak up the scenery from the comfort of their balconies, a coffee in hand. But there is one facet of the monsoon that makes August the best month to visit Kodaikanal. August to October is officially the rare Neelakurinji blooming season, but this happens every 12 years when the hill slopes turn a shade of blue. The tiny blue florets of the Neelakurinji blossoms speckle the hills and valleys in dramatic hues of blue and violet to pink and white, between August and October. The last bloom was in 2018 and the next one is expected in 2030. Outside of a piquing a traveller’s curiosity, the flowers have long inspired writers, poets and painters. The historical novel, Kurinji Flowers by Clare Flynn, for instance, uses the flowers as a veritable backdrop to a story about a young woman set in British India. A poetic fragment in the Tamil Sangam literature called ‘Red Earth and Pouring Rain’ also alludes to the Neelakurinji blossom.

A lovely, soothing Kodaikanal summer (March through May)

With temperatures fluctuating between 20 and 34 degree Celsius, you can always plan a getaway to the hill station in the peak of summer. The soothing day temperatures come as a welcome respite to city folks living in the plains. The Kodai Lake offers fantastic visibility at this time of the year with the water glimmering and the sun rays slanting on your boat as you take in the salubrious surroundings. Coakers’ Walk, for instance, offers the perfect weather and set up for a bicycle ride or a simple afternoon stroll. It is also a good idea to walk down the bare rocky trail to get an obstructed view of the Dolphin’s Nose. You can further go down the short walkway that leads you to the scenic Pambar Falls, the location for the iconic Liril advertisement from the mid-‘80s. With the rolling green slopes exploding with wild blossoms in every imaginable colours, a stay in Kodaikanal as the heat wave sweeps over the plains could just be what the doctor recommended. At 20 degree in the evening, a light breeze is always billowing from the valley making it perfect for a walk in the Bryant Park. It is wonderful to browse around Kodaikanal, eat at its cafes - places like Cafe Cariappa and The Tredis Tea Room have lovely open-air setups - and enjoy the outdoors without the perennial fog of the winter months playing hide and seek with you.

Travelling to Kodaikanal

  • By Air : While the Madurai and Trichy airports are the closest to Kodaikanal, being 120 and 150 kilometres away respectively, it is Coimbatore that has an international airport. About 175 kilometres from Kodaikanal, the drive will take you upwards of four hours. The airport is one of the busiest in the country and is served by domestic and international airlines such as Air India, Air Arabia, Air India Express, Alliance Air, IndiGo, SpiceJet, SriLankan Airlines, SilkAir among others. The destinations it connects to include Colombo, Sharjah, Singapore, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Amritsar, Kolkata, Kochi, Mumbai, Hyderabad among others.
  • By Rail : The closest railway station is about 50 kilometres away at Kodaikanal Road Railway Station. From the main point in the city, the drive is around a couple of hours. A part of the Southern Railway Zone, the railway station is essentially a rail to bus transport point to get you into the upper reaches of the hill station. Although there are multiple passenger trains running through it, the more significant connectivity is the one between Madurai and the Egmore Railway Station in Chennai provided by the Pandian Express.
  • By Road : Located on Woodville Road, the Kodaikanal Bus Stand is a 10-minute walk from the city centre. You can sign up for a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus that plies through this bus stand and connects Kodaikanal with Chennai, Madurai, and Kanyakumari to name a few.

Q. Is monsoon a good time to visit Kodaikanal?

A: While monsoon months starting from June to early October exude a beauty of their own, the roads turn treacherous making it unsuitable for walks or treks. Heavy rain showers are capable of ruining your itinerary for the day. A lot of places may be out of bounds owing to the rains. The heavy rains, for example, can bring the boating services on the Kodai Lake to a halt. It is beautiful to watch the rains from the comfort of your room, but not quite the same when you venture outdoors.

Q. When is the next Neelakurinji blossom due?

A: The Neelakurinji flowers bloom every 12 years and cover the hills of Kodaikanal and the Nilgiri Hills in Kerala with their delicious lilac-coloured blossoms. The last blossoming season was 2018 and the upcoming one is in 2030. The flowers spring up in the monsoon months of August to October, one of the reasons a monsoon visit can be rewarding.

Q. Can Kodaikanal be visited in the winters?

A: Yes, Kodaikanal receives a gentle winter between November and February with the temperatures ranging from 30 to 8 degree Celsius. There is a perpetual mist hanging over the forests and the lake disrupting visibility, but it is surreal to be boating on the Kodai Lake in this weather and watch the lush jungles hugging the hills. Early mornings and evenings call for warmer clothing, preferably a layer of woollens, and this nip is quite enjoyable especially when you are taking a stroll at the Coakers’ Walk or Bryant Park.

Q. Which is the nearest international airport to Kodaikanal?

A: The Coimbatore International Airport is the closest at 175 kilometres. It is a straight 4-hour drive and it offers great domestic connectivity aside from flights to Colombo, Sharjah and Singapore on the international front. Most major domestic carriers and select international carriers operate from it.

Q. Can Kodaikanal be visited in the peak of summer?

A: Kodaikanal’s elevation at 7000-foot make it an all-weather destination. The summers are cool with temperatures ranging between 20 and 34 degree Celsius. You can happily be in the outdoors, explore its various sightseeing points such as Dolphin’s Nose, Guna Caves, Pillar Rocks aside from enjoying a boat ride on the Kodai Lake which forms the heart of the hill station. Summer evenings are wonderful for a walk down the Coakers’ Walk or soaking up the greenery of the Bryant Park. Fortunately, there is no fog in this season and you can enjoy unhindered views of the Western Ghats and celebrate your escape from the sweltering plains.

Q. Can I go boating on the Kodai Lake in the monsoon?

A: The winter months between November and February are better for boating than the monsoon where unexpected showers can suspend boating services for a period of time. Enjoy the crisp scenery, the cloud-swathed hills and the vibrant jungles lining the shores of this man-made lake that forms the heart of Kodaikanal on a nippy winter day.

It is located in the Dindigul district (Tamil Nadu), neighbouring Munnar in Kerala. Madurai is the closest major city to Kodaikanal, at a distance of 112 km.

1. Vattakanal Water Falls

hotels in kodaikanal

Vattakanal Water Falls is on the way to the famous Dolphin Nose. It is a step-cut waterfall inside a thick forest with eucalyptus and pine trees, 100 metres from the road.

You have to walk inside the forest to reach the falls. When the water flow is less, you can take a dip in the cold water and refresh yourself. But be careful when walking on the rocks as they’re slippery.

After visiting the Vattkanal Falls, you can trek further along the stream to reach the Lion’s Cave. It takes you deep inside the forest.

Note: Although there are no lions in the Western Ghats, it has been named Lion’s Cave by the locals.

It may take up to twenty minutes to reach here.

If you have a guide, they may also show you other hidden spots/waterfalls inside the forest.

After visiting the waterfall, you can take a quick bite from one of the food and tea stalls outside.

The best time to visit this waterfall is between October and February when the weather is misty and rainy. However, summers are better if you want a dip in the falls as the water flow is less.

There is no entry fee for this waterfall. You can also park your vehicle on the main road next to the waterfall.

2. Dolphin Nose

things to do in kodaikanal

The only trek you’ll have in Kodaikanal is the trek to Dolphin Nose. Hence, it is among the most highly recommended places to visit in Kodaikanal.

It’s an easy trek that covers 2 km in total (to and fro).

You’ll be going downhill, and the terrain will be irregular and slippery from the starting point. Hence, you’ll need proper trekking shoes for a good grip.

Depending on your speed, it can take up to half an hour to reach Dolphin Nose. On the way, you’ll be witnessing a waterfall, crossing a pine forest and a few shops which serve maggie, fruits and other energy drinks.

how to reach kodaikanal

You can take a break at one of these spots to refresh.

Note : Carry a bottle of water as you’ll get thirsty often.

You may get tired, but the trek will be worth it once you reach Dolphin Nose. It is a protruding rock shaped like a dolphin’s nose with mountain and valley views. You can pose there for photos (which is a popular activity here) or enjoy the views around.

Be careful while walking on the rock or posing for photos because one slip could be fatal.

weather in kodaikanal

After Dolphin Nose, you can visit the Echo Rock, which hardly takes another five minutes. As the name suggests, it is a place where you can hear echoes of sounds.

More than echoes, you’ll love the views here, especially when the weather is clear. Much like Dolphin Nose, this is also another protruding rock where you can get amazing valley views and pose for photos.

After spending some time at Dolphin Nose and Echo Rock, it’s time to get back to the starting point. The return will be more tiring as it’ll be an uphill trek, but you can take breaks in between or have refreshments.

tourist places in kodaikanal

Once you reach the starting point, don’t forget to have a meal at Altaf’s Cafe. It is one of my favourite cafes in Kodaikanal.

Altaf’s Cafe is an Israeli cafe which serves delicious Lebanese food with a valley view. They’re known for their falafel, hummus and pita, and lemon honey tea.

It’s ideal to start the trek to Dolphin Nose early in the morning to avoid the crowds and enjoy a pleasant climate.

You can also park your car near the starting point.

3. Pillar Rocks Viewpoint

best hotels in kodaikanal

Our next destination is the Pillar Rocks Viewpoint. As the name suggests, it is a viewpoint where you can see two naturally-formed pillar-shaped rocks together at the height of 400 metres from the ground.

Depending on the weather, the Pillar Rocks may or may not be covered with mist. If it’s covered with mist, you can wait for some time to see if it goes away because apart from the rocks, you’ll also be able to see the nearby mountain ranges.

The only con with this place is that it becomes crowded especially during the weekends because it is one of the most commercial places to visit in Kodaikanal.

Apart from the viewpoint, there is also a small garden and a waterfall where you can spend some time.

You can also shop for souvenirs and have snacks nearby.

The entry to the viewpoint is only INR 5 and you can park your car on the roadside.

4. Guna Caves

best time to visit kodaikanal

Less than 1 km away from the Pillar Rocks Viewpoint is Guna Caves.

Also known as Devil’s Kitchen, it later became famous as ‘Guna Caves’ as the famous movie ‘Gunaa’ by Kamal Haasan was shot here.

But don’t let the name fool you because the cave present here is now closed as many people lost their lives previously.

However, you’ll still enjoy walking through the dense forest that leads to Guna Caves. It is full of tall trees and trees with roots that spread like the legs of an octopus on the ground giving it an eerie vibe.

kodaikanal road

It was one of my favourite sights on the trip.

Apart from that, there is also a viewpoint which offers you a stunning viewpoint of the Kodaikanal mountains.

You’ll also be seeing the cave beneath the ground covered by a steel cage and bushes.

After visiting Guna Caves, you can munch on some snacks at one of the food stalls outside.

You can park your vehicle at the roadside.

The entry fee to Guna Caves is INR 10.

homestay in kodaikanal

After visiting all the aforementioned places, I suggest you end your day 1 at Bryant Park.

It is one of the most well-maintained parks I’ve come across in South India.

It is a big park with various varieties of flowers, walking paths and a nursery that sells plants at reasonable rates.

You can easily spend up to an hour exploring this park or relaxing on the lawns.

Outside the park, you’ll find many shopping stalls where you can buy jackets, and tees or have your favourite snack.

kodaikanal weather

Here, you can also hire a bicycle or a horse and ride around Kodaikanal Lake.

The park is open from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Next to the park, you’ll find the main attraction of Kodaikanal i.e. the Kodaikanal Lake.

At 2,000 metres above sea level, it is a huge star-shaped man-made lake which is at the centre of Kodaikanal.

You can go boating here and enjoy the various viewpoints around the lake.

The best time to visit both Bryant Park and Kodaikanal Lake is during the evening.

On Day 2, you cover the remaining tourist destinations within Kodaikanal before driving down to Berijam Lake.

6. Upper Lake View

kodaikanal tourist places

You can start your day 2 with a drive to the Upper Lake View.

It gives you a bird’s eye view of the Kodaikanal Lake, its surrounding trees and grasslands, the mountain ranges in the background and the blue skies at the top.

The contrast of colours between all the natural attractions you see here is what makes it special. Hence, don’t forget to capture this place with your camera.

Another reason why I want you to start your day from this place is because of the amazing masala chai you get here. There’s nothing more refreshing than sipping your masala chai while enjoying this view.

You can wrap this place in 15 minutes.

7. Kodaikanal Pine Forest

kodaikanal hotels

Kodaikanal Pine Forest is another major attraction in Kodaikanal not just for tourists but also for film shootings.

It is an ideal place to visit if you enjoy long walks through tall pine trees or you want to spend some peaceful time in nature. If you’re adventurous, you can also go horse riding here.

It is also a great place to take pictures in the backdrop of the huge pine trees especially when the weather is misty.

You can easily spend up to half an hour here.

No entry ticket is required at this place.

8. Moir Point

bangalore to kodaikanal

Less than 1.5 km away from the Kodaikanal Pine Forest is Moir Point. This is also another place in Kodaikanal that receives a lot of footfall.

It is a watchtower inside a park from where you can get panoramic views of the mountain ranges and the blue skies from height.

When I went, the entire sky was covered with clouds neighboured by the mountain ranges. It was one of the most breathtaking sights I’d seen in Kodaikanal.

You may get a different view depending on the climate at the time.

chennai to kodaikanal

In any case, you’ll enjoy the cold breeze at Moir Point. Hence, you can relax in the park on one of the benches or take a stroll around the walking tracks.

I suggest you try the local carrots and sweet corn here because they’re very fresh and tasty.

Note : Be careful of the monkeys while munching on food.

In total, you can spend up to 20 minutes here.

The entry ticket to Moir Point costs INR 10 and the closing time is around 5 pm.

madurai to kodaikanal

Berijam Lake is one of the best offbeat places to visit in Kodaikanal.

It is a natural freshwater lake inside a reserved forest area between Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu and Munnar, Kerala.

The best thing about seeing Berijam Lake is that you’re visiting not one but five places in total (in chronological order) inside a reserve forest – Silent Valley View, Berijam Lake View, Caps Fly Valley View, Mathikettan Forest View and finally, Berijam Lake.

coimbatore to kodaikanal

Hence, even if you decide to skip the other tourist places in Kodaikanal, I urge you to visit Bejiram Lake without fail.

Berijam Lake is a 13 km drive from Moir Point.

Since you’re passing through a reserved forest, only 150-200 passes are issued per day. To make it easier for you, let me tell you how you can obtain the pass for Berijam Lake (and the other places on the way) if you’re driving down with your car.

On the day of your journey, you need to obtain a pass from the District Forest Office in Kodaikanal. The counter at the office opens from 8:30 to 9:30 am.

where is kodaikanal

Note : You cannot take two-wheelers to Berijam Lake. Only local cabs, private cars and forest vans are allowed.

Try to reach the office and stand in the queue by 8 am. If you plan to visit Berijam Lake on a weekend/public holiday, you may have to reach the office by 7 am at least due to the increased demand.

Note : Local cab operators are given priority over tourists/visitors and they obtain multiple passes. Hence, if you hire a local cab, the cab driver will take care of obtaining the pass for you.

Keep your driving license/Aadhar Card handy and carry a pen. Get the form from the office staff when your turn comes, fill it and hand it to them.

kodaikanal hill station

Thereafter, they’ll call your vehicle number which is when you make a payment of INR 200 and obtain the permit.

After obtaining the pass, you need to drive to Moir Point and show your pass at the check post there. They allow entry only up to 12 pm so plan your trip accordingly.

After visiting Berijam Lake and the remaining points, you have to return to this check post at Moir Point by 3:30 pm.

Note : Instead of driving your vehicle or hiring a cab, a third option is to hire a forest van from Moir Point. It is a 25-seater van that starts every two hours from Moir Point and it’ll take you around all the five points. It costs INR 250-300 per person.

dolphin nose kodaikanal

When it comes to the experience of driving through the reserved forest, you’ll enjoy the journey. The roads may not be good and there are some rough patches as compared to the other roads you see in Kodaikanal.

But the fresh air you feel as soon as you enter the reserved forest and the scenic views on the way to Berijam Lake make the journey worth it.

Ensure you stop at all five places and take pictures. But apart from that, don’t stop unnecessarily because the reserved forest is home to wild animals.

kodaikanal places to visit

The highlight of the trip is Berijam Lake, the last stop. The lake surrounds itself with mountains and forest ranges in the background.

While boating is restricted and you cannot enter the lake, you can spend some time here enjoying the beautiful scenery.

It takes around 45 minutes to reach Berijam Lake, the last point in the reserved forest from Moir Point.

On Day 3, you cover the tourist destinations that are on the outskirts of Kodaikanal before returning.

10. Poombarai Village View Point

temperature in kodaikanal

On Day 3, we start our journey with a drive to the quaint Poombarai Village, 18 km away from Kodaikanal.

It is a tiny and colourful village known for its terraced green fields which makes it an attractive landscape.

There is a viewpoint on the main road where you can stop your vehicle and get a panoramic view of the village with the mountain ranges and the blue sky in the background.

It looks like a miniature village from this viewpoint and as a landscape photographer, I loved capturing Poombarai Village from here.

pine forest kodaikanal

You can also visit the village if you have time. It has a famous temple and is known for its unique variety of garlic that is available for purchase.

In any case, don’t forget to have a bite from Passiflora Ristorante Italiano – an Italian restaurant which serves some amazing food with a view of the Poombarai Village. It is right next to the Poombarai Village View Point at the edge of the cliff.

11. Mannavanur Lake

cottages in kodaikanal

The next stop after visiting Poombarai Village is Mannavanur Lake, 17 km away. It was among my favourite places to visit in Kodaikanal.

The drive to Mannavanur is also exciting as you’ll be travelling through forests and pine trees with many uphill and downhill curves on the way.

Note : There won’t be many shops/restaurants on the way to Mannavanur, hence, I recommend you carry some snacks.

Located in Mannavanur Village, Mannavanur Lake is a heart-shaped lake inside a forest and another offbeat place in Kodaikanal like Berijam Lake.

suicide point kodaikanal

It surrounds itself with lush greenery in the form of trees, vast green pastures of land and a cool climate. It is a great place to have a picnic or indulge in some sports activities like frisbee as I did with my friends.

In terms of other activities, you can go for the coracle boat ride, kayaking or even ziplining on top of the lake. You can enquire about the same from the forest officials present here.

I also recommend you to go to the other side of Mannavanur Lake where you can visit the sheep farm, and rabbit farm and get another view of Mannavanur Lake from a different angle.

kodaikanal nearest airport

As a photographer, I loved exploring both sides of Mannavanur Lake.

In case you’re hungry, you can have some snacks at the entrance of Mannavanur Lake. Parking is also available outside.

You can easily spend up 2-3 hours exploring Mannavanur Lake before returning to Kodaikanal.

To reach Mannavanur Lake, you need to walk less than 1 km from the entrance. They charge INR 30 per person for entry.

kodaikanal cottages

As you return to Kodaikanal, you can wrap up your journey by visiting Coakers Walk in the evening.

Next to Kodaikanal Lake, is a 1 km stretch of a walking path with a panoramic view of the valley and hills right next to you. You can go for a relaxing walk here, sit on one of the benches and enjoy the views or shop for souvenirs or eateries that are present here.

It gives the vibe of a Mall Road that you see in the hill stations in North India.

kodaikanal places

Depending on the weather, you may or may not see the valley views. When I went, the entire valley was covered in fog hence we couldn’t see anything.

There is also an observatory here with a telescope that gives you a clear view of the valleys and mountain ranges. It costs INR 20 per person.

Coakers Walk is open between 7 am and 7 pm and it costs INR 25 per head.

How to reach Kodaikanal?

Kodaikanal is well-connected to nearby and major cities by various modes of transport.

Self-driving car/bike.

weather kodaikanal

For the best experience, I recommend driving your vehicle (if you’re coming from a nearby city) or hiring a Zoomcar from Madurai or Coimbatore, near Kodaikanal.

We hired our car from Zoomcar in Coimbatore and apart from visiting all the places in Kodaikanal, we also enjoyed the drive from the plains of Coimbatore to the high mountain ranges of Kodaikanal.

You can also hire a cab from Kodaikanal town. There are plenty of cab drivers. Moreover, you can enquire about them from your accommodation as most of these stays have a tie-up with the local cab drivers.

Best time to visit Kodaikanal

I’ve visited Kodaikanal twice – once in June and once in December. And both times, the weather in Kodaikanal didn’t disappoint.

Based on my experience, I suggest you visit Kodaikanal in December if you love having a colder climate and want to enjoy the company of fog and mists.

If you want to experience sunny but cool weather with clearer views, June is your best bet.

In any case, you can avoid the monsoon season in Kodaikanal i.e. from July to September. The terrains may be slippery in Kodaikanal at this time and you may not be able to visit all the places.

Best hotels in Kodaikanal

You’ll find different types of hotels in Kodaikanal but I suggest you have a look at the ones I’ve suggested below if you want something different.

Cloudscape15

kodaikanal tourism

I stayed in Cloudscape15 with my friends and I can happily recommend this homestay in Kodaikanal if you’re travelling here with a big group of friends/family and want an entire property to yourself.

The only drawback with Cloudscape15 is that it is 7 km away from Kodaikanal but that is also a positive because it is in a remote location with no noise or crowd.

Additionally, you’ll enjoy the views from the balcony, and the starry night skies. There are caretakers as well on the property who’re very friendly and helpful.

Econut Farmhouse

If you want a calm and peaceful stay in a natural setting, Econut Farmhouse is my recommendation.

Located 16 km from Kodaikanal on the top of a hill, it is a homestay inside an organic farm with amazing views of the mountain ranges, home-cooked food and friendly hosts.

It also has excellent wifi and UPS for power backup and therefore is a great place for a staycation.

The best thing about them is that they grow their vegetables and leafy greens on an organic farm and use them for their meals.

You can explore the various trekking routes around their property and you can also spot elephants and bison.

Zostel Kodaikanal

poombarai kodaikanal

If you’re a solo traveller, Zostel Kodaikanal has you covered. Located 2 km away from Kodaikanal, Zostel Kodaikanal has private rooms and dorms apart from great views and an in-house cafe.

As a solo traveller, you can save money with Zostel while also meeting like-minded people in Kodaikanal.

International Kodaikanal Coffee Country is an offbeat place to stay in Kodaikanal located 10 km from the town.

As the name suggests, this homestay is an old property inside a coffee plantation on the slope of a hill.

The accommodation is basic but clean and the hosts are very friendly.

They also serve delicious home-cooked food, have nice walking trails around the property and friendly dogs that give you company.

You can also spot some wildlife while you’re here.

Best restaurants in Kodaikanal

One of the best things to do in Kodaikanal apart from visiting all the tourist places is to try the variety of cuisine you get here.

Apart from having nice weather and beautiful natural attractions, Kodaikanal is also famous for its cafes and restaurants. Ensure that you try food from the following cafes/restaurants for a wholesome experience.

Cloud Street

kodaikanal hill station kodaikanal tamil nadu

Could Street was our go-to place for having wood-fired pizzas. Their portions have good quality and quantity.

Apart from serving a variety of wood-fired pizzas, they also have pasta and coffee. The beef steak is one of their signature dishes.

You’ll also enjoy their homely vibe where you can chill and relax, read a book or play board games. There is a lot of space to host big groups.

The staff is also friendly.

Muncheez is a small Italian cafe known for serving wraps, rolls, burgers, sandwiches, pasta, and pizzas apart from brownies and cakes.

Their coffee, cheesecakes, chocolate brownies and chocolate cakes are a must-try.

As their dining space is limited, I suggest you come here early in the evening to occupy a seat. Apart from food, they have board games and a variety of books in the cafe.

If you’re looking for a quick finger food experience, Muncheez is ideal.

Altaf’s Cafe

kodaikanal climate

I’ve visited Altaf’s Cafe twice and both times, I enjoyed the quality and quantity of food.

Located at the start of the Dolphin Nose trek, Altaf’s Cafe is known for its Middle-Eastern Cuisine and Italian Food.

Based on experience, I can recommend their Falafel Platter and Hummus Pita apart from Hot Chocolate.

You can also try their ginger lemon honey tea which comes highly recommended.

They also have a nice vibe as they have friendly waiters and nice music playing in the cafe always.

Apart from that, you get sweeping valley views as they’re located on the edge of a mountain.

One of the lesser-known but must-visit cafes in Kodaikanal is Cafe Cariappa.

It is a small cafe run by a lady known for their coffee, cakes and chocolate.

The best thing about the cafe is that they locally source and brew their coffee which gives it an authentic taste.

I recommend their Tosca Cake and Hot Chocolate based on my experience. Apart from that, you can also have their Carrot Cake and Caramel Cashew Cake.

Their menu has limited options but you will be delighted by the quality that this cafe maintains on all its items.

Cafe Cariappa opens after 11 am.

Jerry, Thanks for the write-up. But please be careful with your research. Lions aren’t found in Western Ghats. Even though lions could inhabit a variety of regions, they haven’t found in tropical rainforests in India. So, the Lion’s Cave could probably a title to draw more tourists and probably little to do with actual lions.

Thanks for the heads up, Abhy! While you’re right, this place is called as Lion’s Cave on Google Maps. So I can’t give it any other name, unfortunately.

Moreover, I recommend this place based on my personal experience as it takes you deep inside the forest. I’m sure adventure lovers would enjoy it, irrespective of lions.

Anyways, I’ll add a disclaimer in the article.

Thanks again!✌️

Surrounded by the natural beauty of dense forests, lakes, waterfalls, etc., Kodaikanal is a hill station you should not miss out on if you are in Tamil Nadu. Once you decide the best time to visit Kodaikanal, you should start exploring the things you can do on your next vacation to this majestic destination. Listed below are the top 5  things to do in Kodaikanal  regardless of the season you come in: -

1.     Take a Boat Ride

The Kodai Lake is the best spot to visit at any point in time as it is the most sought-after tourist attraction in this hilly area. Nestled by the Palani Hills range, Kodai Lake offers a panoramic sight from every angle. You can take a boat ride for an amazing experience of the tranquillity of this nature-rich spot. The best season to visit Kodaikanal Lake is during the winter season for the dramatic effects of fog around you as you enjoy the pleasantly chilly weather.

2.     Look at Amazing Views at the Dolphin’s Nose

The Dolphin's Nose is a viewpoint that you can reach after a moderate trek of almost 3 km. This spot is named dolphin's nose because it is based on a piece of rock which looks like a dolphin's nose. A good time to visit Kodaikanal's Dolphin's Nose is during a summer evening when the winds are blowing and you get to witness the picturesque views of the valleys. You can also explore the waterfall while on the trek to this tourist spot.

3.     Visit the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory

The Kodaikanal Solar Observatory is an early 20th century observatory, located at the highest point of the hill station. It is a place where solar observations are conducted along with research work. The best time to visit Kodaikanal Solar Observatory is when you are in the mood to learn about astronomical instruments and research conducted there. This observatory offers guided tours that allow you to check out its state-of-the-art equipment, research facilities, and telescopes for looking at astronomical objects. It is a must-visit place for all astronomy lovers.

4.     Explore the Guna Caves

Just a few kilometres away from Kodaikanal are the Guna Caves, a tourist spot that offers a thrilling experience to everyone. It is located at an altitude of almost 2230 metres and is totally covered by pine forests that give it a mystical feel. The Guna Caves were originally known as the Devil’s Kitchen but the name changed after the hit Tamil movie "Guna" was shot here. The best time to go to Kodaikanal's Guna Caves is during the daytime as the forest can be pretty dangerous if you are not cautious enough.

5.     A Day Trip to Ooty

If you are in the mood for a road trip, you can go to another most sought-after hill station in Tamil Nadu, called Ooty. The best time to visit Kodaikanal and Ooty is during the winter season as you can enjoy the natural beauty along with pleasant weather. The Ooty Lake surrounded by lush flora attracts innumerable tourists from across the country as its beauty is not to be missed. Many locals from Tamil Nadu take this road trip during the summer season as it best time to visit Kodaikanal and Ooty, giving them a much-needed break from the unbearable heat.

The best season to visit Kodaikanal is during winter but you can explore this hilly area whenever you want. Every season has its magnificence that makes it a good time to visit Kodaikanal. You can take a tour package from a reputed travel agency to ensure the best time at this destination.

E-passes mandatory for visitors travelling to Ooty, Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu from May 7: Know reasons

In case you are planning to travel to ooty and kodaikanal in tamil nadu make sure to seek an e-pass as the madras high court has made it mandatory for visitors. in the article, we have mentioned the reasons behind it..

Kristina Das

According to the TOI report , a special division bench comprising two justices N Sathish Kumar and D Bharatha Chakravarthy had introduced the e-pass. Its purpose was to deal with the problems caused by the increasing number of visitors to the hill stations. The number of e-passes issued, however, is unlimited, and residents are free from this rule.

The ruling by the Madras High Court is also a reaction to traffic jams. The court wants to gather information on vehicle traffic on the difficult ghat roads that lead to these locations by introducing e-passes.

In response to a report that detailed the tremendous flood of more than 20,000 vehicles every day—11,500 cars and 6,500 motorcycles—during peak season, the court directed District Collectors to set up an online e-pass issue platform. These passes will be required to enter, allowing controlled access and reducing traffic on congested roads.

Ooty, also known as the Queen of Hill Stations, is located in the Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu. It is famous for its tea plantations, picturesque views, and colonial charm. The best time to visit Ooty is from October to June when the weather is pleasant and perfect for sightseeing.

The first place that comes to mind when talking about Ooty is the iconic Nilgiri Mountain Railway. This UNESCO World Heritage site offers a scenic train ride that takes you through tunnels, bridges, and lush green forests. The journey starts from Mettupalayam and ends in Ooty, covering a distance of 46 km. It is a must-try experience for anyone visiting Ooty. Next on the list is Ooty Lake, one of the most popular tourist spots in Ooty. It is an artificial lake surrounded by lush greenery and offers boating facilities for visitors. Another must-visit place in Ooty is the Emerald Lake. Located in the lap of the Nilgiri Mountains, this serene lake offers breathtaking views and is perfect for a picnic with family and friends.

For nature lovers, the Botanical Gardens in Ooty is a must-visit place. One cannot miss visiting the Doddabetta Peak while in Ooty. It is the highest peak in the Nilgiris and offers stunning views of the surrounding hills and valleys. Apart from these famous tourist spots, Ooty also has some hidden gems waiting to be explored. One such place is the Pykara Lake and Waterfalls.

Kodaikanal, also known as the Princess of Hill Stations is located in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu, Kodaikanal is famous for its serene lakes, misty mountains, and beautiful waterfalls. The best time to visit Kodaikanal is from September to May when the weather is pleasant and perfect for outdoor activities.

The first place on our list is the Kodai Lake, one of the most popular tourist spots in Kodaikanal. Next up is the Coaker's Walk, a one-kilometre-long paved pedestrian path that offers stunning views of the surrounding valleys and hills. The walk is named after Lt.Coaker, who commissioned the path in 1872.

For adventure enthusiasts, the Dolphin's Nose is a must-visit place in Kodaikanal. Then one of the most popular waterfalls in Kodaikanal is the Bear Shola Falls. This waterfall gets its name from the bears that used to come here to drink water in the olden days. The waterfall is surrounded by lush greenery and is a perfect spot for a picnic with family and friends.

If you want to experience the beauty of Kodaikanal from a different perspective, then take a boat ride on the Berijam Lake. Another hidden gem in Kodaikanal is the Mannavanur Lake. Located 35 km from the main town, this lake is surrounded by picturesque landscapes.

How to get an e-pass to drive to Kodaikanal, Ooty this summer

Last week, the Tamil Nadu government announced that tourists looking to drive into the state’s hill stations this summer will require an e-pass to enter. The official portal to apply for these e-passes was launched at 6am on 6 May (Monday), allowing interested tourists to prepare for their trips in advance. Here’s what you need to know about the new e-pass:

Which places in Tamil Nadu require an e-pass and why?

The order was initially issued by a division bench of the Madras High Court to regulate the entry of vehicles to the hill stations like Ooty in the Nilgiris and Kodaikanal , given the large influx of tourists these areas see during peak seasons. The rule is valid from 6 May to 30 June 2024. It’s important to note that the e-passes don’t serve as a restriction on entry–there is no limit on the number of e-passes to be issued. Instead, this is a way for the government to gather data on the number of vehicles entering the hill stations, the number of people in the vehicles and the number of days tourists plan to stay in the hill stations. The information is to be used to make appropriate infrastructural changes in Ooty and Kodaikanal in the future.

Who requires an e-pass?

E-passes are mandatory for all tourists driving into the hills of the Nilgiris, including Ooty, and Kodaikanal this summer. Local residents and tourists entering these areas via government buses do not require an e-pass.

How can you apply for an e-pass for Ooty or Kodaikanal?

If you’re planning to travel to Kodaikanal or Ooty between 6 May and 30 June, you can apply for an e-pass on the official website epass.tnega.org . You will need to submit details like the number of passengers, vehicle and fuel type, date of entry and exit, purpose of visit and address. The e-pass you receive will feature a QR code that will be checked at entry points in Kodaikanal and Ooty.

Visitors welcome decision on e-pass for Nilgiris, Kodaikanal, say it will help reduce traffic in summer season

K odaikanal (Tamil Nadu) [India], May 7 (ANI): With the directions concerning e-pass coming into force from today for vehicles entering the Nilgiris and Kodaikanal hill stations in Tamil Nadu, visitors said the decision will help regulate traffic and reduce pollution during the summer season.

While some visitors expressed a lack of awareness about the decision, they said the procedure to obtain an e-pass is simple.

Arun, a visitor from Kerala, said they decided to visit Kodaikanal as the weather is getting hot back home.

"We were facing heat conditions in Kerala and Kodaikanal is the best place to go on a trip with friends in summer. Since we were unaware of the mandatory e-pass and its procedure, we are waiting for the pass. We are confident of getting it and are happy to visit Kodaikanal," Arun told ANI.

Prakash, who also came to visit Kodaikanal, said the process of getting an e-pass is very simple. He hailed the decision to introduce e-pass es.

"It is essential to facilitate the smooth movement of vehicles. The e-pass will help regulate traffic," he said.

Thirumalai, who came to Kodaikanal with his family to spend summer vacation, also said that e-pass will help reduce peak-time traffic.

Madras High Court earlier this month asked the Tamil Nadu government to introduce a mandatory e-pass from May 7 to June 30 for all vehicles entering the Nilgiris and Kodaikanal hill stations to safeguard the ecosystem of the place and manage the tourist influx during the peak season.

Following the orders of the court, the district administration of Kodaikanal and Nilgiris announced the implementation of e-pass es for outsiders visiting the district.

The e-pass requirements are simple and need details such as phone number, e-mail, address, vehicle details and stay details on the software created by the district administration. (ANI)
