How to get to Zakynthos

How to get to zante by plane.

Zante has one main airport which serves flights from around Europe. Significantly more flights run in the summer months. It may be necessary to fly to Greece’s capital, Athens, and board a flight to Zante in the winter.

To get to Zante from outside of Europe, you will usually have to change at Athens International Airport too. It’s also an option to fly into Athens and board a ferry.

How to get to Zante by ferry (Athens to Zakynthos)

Ferries run from the mainland port of Kylinni to Zante. It’s best to hire a car in Athens and drive to Kylinni for this option.

Things to do in Zante Travel Guide

1. explore zakynthos town.

Top-quality restaurants , mesmerising churches and a beautiful seafront walkway , Zante town is becoming increasingly popular with visitors. As both the capital and commercial hub of the island, Zakynthos town is well worth a visit.

A visit to Zante town is best started in Saint Marcus square. Once the centre of social and political debating, the square is now home to excellent cafes and restaurants.

A seafront promenade is a great place for a walk. Stroll along the vast port promenade for 1.5km passing the monastery of Strofades and the church of Agios Nikolaos on the way. Both Saint Marcus Square and the promenade are a great way to take in the atmosphere of Zakynthos town.

2. Laganas – Things to do in Laganas

The busiest and most popular resort in Zakynthos, Laganas, is popular with families and young people. It’s an excellent resort to stay in as you explore Zakynthos, with plenty to see and do:

3. Experience a night out on the Laganas Strip

Laganas is one of the party capitals of Greece, famous for its strip of cheap bars and legendary clubs. The resort attracts millions of party-goers every year. Make sure you pay a visit to Zeros, one of Zante’s super-clubs, which hosts some of the main events on the island.

4. A day at the beach

Laganas beach is one of the best beaches in Zante and one of the longest too (9km). I’ve also chosen the beach as one of the best beaches in Greece for families. There are plenty of sun loungers to hire. Sit back and relax as you take in the crystal clear waters and the views out to sea.

If you return in the evening, there’s a long strip of restaurants at the back of the beach. There are PR’s outside each venue, so make sure you find the best deal before deciding! I recommend choosing a restaurant with live Greek dancing to get insight into the Greek culture.

5. A walk to Cameo Island

Well known as the wedding venue in Mamma Mia, Cameo is a small island attached to Zakynthos by a small bridge. Once on the island, you can relax on the beach with stunning views onto Laganas bay or sip a cold drink at the bar.

Entrance to Cameo island costs 5 Euro, with a free drink at the bar included in the price.

6. A boat trip to Marothinissi

Visible from Laganas beach, Marathonisi (Aka. Turtle island) is an uninhabited island just off the coast of Zakynthos. Marathonisi is part of a national marine park that aims to protect loggerhead turtles. Boat trips can be booked to view Marathonissi, and some turtles close up.

7. Tsilivi – Things to do in Tsilivi

Located on the North-East coast of Zakynthos, the resort of Tsilivi (also known as Planos ) is one of the best places to stay on the island. The resort is popular with those who prefer a quiet break but with many activities.

8. Explore Tsilivi Town

Tsilivi town is home to a wide range of souvenir shops and traditional tavernas and cuisine from all over the world. Take a slow walk through the town and take in the atmosphere.

9. Zante Waterpark. Tsilivi

A water paradise for kids and adults alike. There are so many slides to choose from. There’s something for all the family, from the black hole to the space and the younger kids’ octopus and pirate boat.

I first visited Tsilivi water-park in 2014 as a day trip from our base in Argassi. We returned to stay at the Aqua bay hotel inside the water park the following two years.

We also visited Zante’s other water park in 2014, and although it’s much bigger, the quality of Tsilivi water park is much better. The neighbouring Planos bay hotel also has free access to the water park.

Whether you decide to stay at the Aqua bay hotel or visit the water-park on a day trip, make sure you try the lazy river, my favourite part of the park!

I’ve visited with family previously, but I plan to return with my daughter in the future.

10. Try your hand at Greek dancing

Greek dancing is a very old and popular tradition throughout Greece. Each island and mainland area has it’s own interpretation. Why not spend the evening with Greek musicians playing traditional Greek music and Greek dancers. You’re welcome to join in and have a go.

Get your guide offers a ‘Dinner with Greek dancing tour’ where guests can enjoy  Enjoy a night of traditional Greek food, free-flowing wine, music, and dancing in an idyllic setting. Free-flowing wine and traditional Greek meal are included, along with return transfers to your hotel for 11PM. Click here to book tickets in advance.

11. Eat at a Traditional Taverna

Greece’s cuisine is famous throughout the world. Each island has its own dishes and interpretations. Take a look at this article by BBC good food explaining the must-eats in Zakynthos.

Once you’re familiar with what foods to try, it comes down to finding the best taverna to eat at.

The Greek dinner with dancing tour as above offers a three-course meal at a traditional taverna consisting of  ‘tzatziki (garlic, cucumber and yoghurt dip), spinach pies, cheese pies, stuffed vine leaves, sausage pies, and Greek salad. T

he main course will include a mix of pork souvlaki and roast chicken with oven potatoes or a vegetarian option of either stuffed tomatoes or spaghetti Neapolitan. For dessert, you can enjoy fruits of the season or a traditional Zakynthian sweet. Click here to book tickets in advance with get your guide .

If you want to explore Zante’s tavernas without a guide, then take a look at this guide , explaining the best tavernas in each area of Zakynthos.

12. Keri Caves

You can find Keri Caves, a paradise of crystal clear waters and caves just off the Keri Cape. You can swim through some of the caves and admire the reflections on the cave ceiling. Many divers visit the area as well as visitors on boat trips.

13. Blue Caves

You’ll find the blue caves below the lighthouse in Cape Skinari in the North of Zakynthos. The caves are one of Zante’s most popular attractions, with thousands of visitors travelling to the caves each year. The reflections turn the water an amazing shade of blue when inside the caves!

The best way to visit the blue caves is in a small boat, especially a glass-bottom boat. Bigger tour boats do visit the blue caves but they can’t enter inside.

14. Shipwreck Beach (Smugglers Cove)

Shipwreck Beach (Aka Navagio beach) is the most well-known shipwreck globally and not to mention one of the most well-known sights of the Greek islands and the most popular tourist trip in Zante. The beach became an impromptu ship graveyard when the MV Panayiotis washed up on its shores in October 1980. If you take a boat trip to Navagio beach, you can explore the rusty shipwreck of the Panayiotis, enjoy a walk on the white sand beach and swim in the clear blue waters. You can also view the shipwreck from the cliff above. Why not get that perfect Instagram shot?

15. Banana Beach

The longest beach in Zakynthos. The beach is very commercial, as with Laganas beach with an array of sunbeds and umbrellas to hire and scattered beach bars. Banana beach is famous for its huge array of watersports, including paragliding, banana boating, pedaloes and canoes. For more information on watersports at Banana beach, visit Banana Watersports.

To reach Banana Beach, it’s easier to drive. The beach offers free parking. However, if you don’t have access to a car, tour buses can take to Banana Beach in the morning and pick you up. Free coaches run from Zakynthos own and Argassi.

16. Argassi

A popular resort close to the capital, Zakynthos town, in the South-East region of the island. I stayed in the Katerina Palace hotel on my first visit to Zakynthos in 2014. The resort is an excellent place to base yourself if you don’t have access to a car. There’s a free bus to Banana beach and a regular tourist train to Zakynthos town. The resort is good for nightlife but not as wild as Laganas with a good selection of bars and restaurants.

17. Xigia Beach

A picturesque and pebbly beach on Zante’s North-West coast famous for its high sulfur content. The water has hidden qualities to relieve aches and pains.

18. Venture Inland

Away from the beaches and tourist resorts of the coastal areas of Zante, the centre of the island has a lot to offer too. The mountain villages of Kambi, Volimes and Anafonitria are almost untouched by tourism.

Many locals harvest grapes to make wine and olives for olive oil. Venture inland and see a huge range of vineyards and olive tree plantations. You’ll understand Zante’s real history and culture before tourism, that’s still thriving today.

19. Visit an Olive Oil Factory

The Aristeon olive oil factory is a family run business located in Lithkia and produces some of the best olive oils in Greece. The olive oil museum and factory is accessible to visitors all year round, portraying the process of olive oil making from the 18th century to today. You can even try the oil and the olives! If you like what you see, there’s a shop where you can stock up on supplies of olive products for your return home. For more information, visit the official website .

20. St Dennis Monastry

The St-Denis monastery or Monastery of Theotokos Anafonitria  is well worth a visit. You’ll find out more about religion and culture on the island. Heather on her travels has written an excellent blog post on visiting the monastery .

Day Trips from Zante

21. ancient olympia.

Olympia is located on the Greek mainland. Olympia is an extensive area of Greek ruins, including athletic training areas, a stadium and a temple. It’s possible to visit from Zakynthos for a long day.

You can also visit The Archaeological Museum of Olympia, where you will find a statue of Hermes attributed to the sculptor Praxiteles.

The town of Olympia is also worth a visit; wonderful for cut-price gold, leather goods, books and souvenirs. You can also visit the medals museum, which is dedicated to the 1986 Olympics held in Olympia.

To reach Olympia, you must catch a ferry from Zakynthos town to Kylinni port on the mainland. Olympia is a 50-minute drive from Kylinni.

Many tours leave Zakynthos to Olympia each day. This is by far the easiest way to visit Olympia from Zakynthos without the worry of missing connections. This tour takes you from Zakynthos to Olympia in a day. It’s also possible to visit by car if you use a car ferry to Kylinni and drive to Olympia.

22. A Day trip to Kefalonia from Zante

Kefalonia is also possible to visit from Zakynthos in a day. Ferries depart from Agios Nicholas in Skinar with ferries taking around one hour.

Make sure you pay a visit to Dragorati cave, where you can take a boat ride under stalagmites and stalactites. The cave was revealed in 1953 after an earthquake. Argostoli , the capital of Kefalonia, is also well worth a visit. The town is built on a hillside overlooking a marina.

To get an insight into local life, why not visit the fishing port of Agio Efimia. Don’t miss the perfect photo opportunity at Myrtos Bay!

I visited the beautiful towns and villages in Kefalonia on a day trip from Zakynthos in 2015. It was surprising how much of the island could be seen in a day.

Getting around Zante

By Car – Hiring a car is the easiest way to get around the Greek islands. Cars can be hired in Athens and driven around the islands by car ferry. Alternatively, you can hire a car at Zakynthos airport on arrival.

By public bus – Buses are a cheap way of getting around Zakynthos. Buses connect the main tourist resorts together rather than attractions. Although buses can be unreliable, they’re a good way from getting from A to B if you want to visit another resort.

By taxi – Taxi’s are easy to come by in Zakynthos. Any hotel will be happy to call one for you, and there’s a taxi rank at all major resorts and at the airport. Taxi transfers can also be booked in advance with Holiday Taxis. See the transfer prices for your dates here.

By Tour – Booking tours is one of the best ways to get around Zakynthos. Many include hotel pickups and a mixture of a bus tour, boat tour and experiences with local knowledge that’s hard to replicate on your own. Click here to view the tours available in Zakynthos. I recommend booking in advance.

10 Top-Rated Attractions & Things to Do on ZĂĄkynthos

Written by Jane Foster and Carri Wilbanks Updated Dec 22, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

ZĂĄkynthos (Zante) island truly offers something for everyone when it comes to things to do. Easy to access at just 16 kilometers off Peloponnese's west coast in the Ionian Sea, the geography here is stunning and varied. Steep cliffs plummet down to rocky shores with white pebble beaches and crystal-clear turquoise seas on the northwest coast, while to the south, you'll find golden-sand beaches and less rock formations. The island's central hinterland is also not lacking; it is a fertile plain overflowing with woodlands and olive groves.

This mix of beautiful scenery; good beaches; and access to an equally stunning underwater world, filled with hidden caves and colorful fish, which is perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving, has made ZĂĄkynthos one of the top tourist destinations in Greece .

Beyond the scenery, the island is also historically interesting. It was under Venice from 1484 to 1797, and Venetian influence can still be felt in the architecture, cuisine, and dialect. Unfortunately, few of its old buildings have remained, due to two devastating earthquakes, in 1515 and 1953.

Find out about the island's best places to visit with our list of the top things to do in Zakynthos.

Shipwreck beach (Navagio beach)

Probably the most photographed and, arguably, beautiful beach in all of Greece, Shipwreck Beach lies in the so-called Smuggler's Cove on Zakynthos' west coast. Made up of fine white pebbles backed by cliffs, the beach takes its name from the wreck of a contraband cigarette smuggling ship that washed up here in 1980.

The most special aspect of this beach is that it can only be accessed from the sea – grab a taxi-boat from the harbor at Agios Nikolaos , which is on the island's northeast coast, 32 kilometers from Zakynthos Town. You can also visit as part of an organized tour departing from Zakynthos Town.

ZĂĄkynthos Town (Zante Town)

On the island's east coast, extending in a wide arc along the gently sloping shores of a bay, Zåkynthos Town is the capital of Zåkynthos. Many of its Neoclassical buildings were demolished by the 1953 earthquake, but its paved streets and squares, filled with bakeries, cafés, boutiques, and jewelry stores, are still a joy to explore on foot.

The town's main church, Agios Dionysios , which houses the relics of the town's patron saint, dates from 1708 and was reconstructed in 1954. For spectacular views over town and the port, go up to the village of Bohali (2.5 kilometers) to the ruined Venetian castle , set in a park with pine trees. This attraction was also largely destroyed by the earthquake, but you can still see the main gate (bearing the Lion of St. Mark, the symbol of Venice), the outer walls, and battlements.

Byzantine Museum

On the main square in Zakynthos Town , this purpose-built museum displays religious icons, frescoes, and sculptures from the island's churches and monasteries, dating from the 12th century onwards. You'll see Byzantine icons carved into wood and there are two rooms dedicated to 18th-century oil paintings. There's also a scale model of the town from around 1950, giving you some idea of how it looked before the devastating 1953 earthquake.

Address: Solomos Square, 29100 Zakynthos Town

Roma Mansion

Built in the 1660s, this proud mansion is one of the few old buildings to have survived the 1953 earthquake, which wiped out most of Zakynthos Town. It is owned by the Roma family, who decided to renovate it and opened it to the public in 2007. Inside, you can see period furniture, paintings, and books, giving you some idea of how local aristocrats lived in the centuries prior.

Address: Louka Carrer 19, Zakynthos Town 29100

Blue Caves

On the northern tip of the island, at Cape Skinari, you'll find the most spectacular so-called Blue Caves. Inside, the bright blue sea reflects the color of the sky, which is mirrored off the walls of the caves and creates an absolutely magical azure and sapphire light scheme. You can visit the Blue Caves in a small glass-bottom boat, which departs from Agios Nikolaos (on the northeast coast, 32 kilometers from Zakynthos Town), or as part of the longer round-the-island cruise from Zakynthos Town.

Keri Caves

On the southwest coast, 14 kilometers from Zákynthos Town, close to the village of Kerí , a row of dramatic caves opens directly onto a crystal-clear turquoise sea, and exploring them with a mask and snorkel or scuba dive tank is one of the top things to do on the island – the lighting effects of the sun reflecting through the water and onto the cave walls makes for some amazing photos and video. It's possible to visit the caves as part of an organized excursion, or rent a boat and go independently.

Porto Limnionas

With crystal-clear, blue-green water set against a backdrop of cliffs and caves, Porto Limnionas is one of the top secluded swimming spots on the island. In a wild location down an only recently paved road, not far from the small village of Agios Leon, it is gaining in popularity each year, and in the height of summer can get crowded. Sun-loungers can be rented from two local restaurants with terraces fronting the sea, and once in the water there is good snorkeling, along with caves and even an underwater bridge.

Gerakas Beach

On the southeast coast, eight kilometers south of ZĂĄkynthos town , the wide bay of LaganĂĄs is home to several blissful stretches of sandy beach. Since the 1980s, it has been the island's top resort, with budget accommodation attracting young visitors in search of sea, sun, and fun.

This area is also the breeding ground for the loggerhead sea turtle, which is an endangered species, known for being very timid. An estimated 1,300 loggerhead turtles live around Laganas Bay and are protected in the Zakynthos National Marine Park, which was founded in 1999 to limit access to certain parts of the beach during the nesting season. To learn more, visit the park's exhibition center in Dafni, at the east end of Laganas Bay.

Official site: www.nmp-zak.org

Askos Stone Park

A must-do for animal lovers, Askos Stone Park is in the north of the island, close to the village of Volimes , 30 kilometers from Zakynthos Town . It's highly recommended for children – animals here include deer, raccoons, peacocks, and tortoises, as well as a pony, donkey, goats, and chickens. You get a map and a bottle of water with the entrance ticket, and there are attendants in the park who can explain where the animals are from and how to feed them.

Xigia Sulphur Beach

Xigia Sulphur Beach definitely has a bit of an eggy smell about it, but it's beautiful nonetheless. Located down a rocky incline (wear proper shoes), the white pebble sand beach is set within a secluded cove, protected on three sides by sheer cliffs. The water is quite beautiful here, especially around midday, when the sun is directly overhead and makes the pebbles gleam.

Stepping into the sea, you can feel the sulphur in the water and also in the mud it forms. Bathing in sulphur is believed to have therapeutic qualities, from helping to reduce muscle and bone pain to healing skin problems. The sulphur comes from a spring that can be seen in a small crack between the cliff walls. It oozes out as a milky white substance with a distinct odor, and turns the water around it a little cloudy.

The beach is located on the island's northeastern coast. It is actually comprised of a few different beaches in a row, but the one on the north end is the prettiest. It is easiest to access with a car, although you can attempt via a combination of public transport and then taxi, but this means changing buses twice if you're coming from Zakynthos Town.

Luxury Hotels:

  • For five-star luxury steps from the beach, The Lesante Luxury Hotel & Spa in Tsilivi village is a great choice. It features inviting indoor and outdoor pools and a complimentary breakfast buffet.
  • If you're traveling with the family and looking for a luxe sleep with space to move around, check out Erietta Luxury Apartments . These are located just five minutes from Zakynthos Town.
  • Also try the Olea All Suite Hotel . It is a five-star property with a rustic-luxe vibe.

Mid-Range Hotels :

  • Balcony Hotel is a solid, good-value choice in the mid-range bracket. This family-owned property is just a short walk to the beach, comes with sea views, and serves an excellent breakfast.
  • Another top mid-range choice in the Kalamaki resort area is Hotel Venus & Suites .

Budget Hotels :

  • Contessa Hotel is a family-run, good-value option in Argassi. Breakfast is included, there are sea views, a rooftop restaurant, and an outdoor pool.
  • Another option in this price range is Athina Apts in Kalamaki. These air-conditioned apartments are near the beach and restaurants, and parking is free.

Logistical tips for your Zakynthos trip

Before diving into the best things to do in Zante, Greece, I want to go over some useful travel tips. These logistical tips will help you make the most of your time in Zakynthos.

About Zante

Zante is the third largest island in the Ionian Sea, and one of the most popular destinations in Greece. Its original Greek name is Zakynthos, but it’s often referred to as Zante from most English speakers.

Zante has a party reputation, thanks to the town of Laganas in the south, where the parties, bars and clubs are concentrated. However, if you’re not looking for a party trip, don’t worry as you can easily avoid this part of the island.

We spent seven days in Zante and only drove through Laganas once. The island has so much more to offer than just parties.

From beautiful white sand beaches with crystal clear waters, turtle spotting, dramatic white cliffs, delicious cuisine and picturesque villages, Zante has something for everyone.

How to get around Zante

The easiest way to get around Zante is to rent a car . This will give you the most freedom, allowing you to visit beaches and towns that aren’t on the main public bus system.

If (like me) you don’t know how to drive, you can get by with public transport and taxis, but be aware that this is not ideal. Public buses aren’t very regular, and don’t cover the entire island, especially more off the beaten track spots.

That said, most tours will include or offer pick-up and drop-off, so if you book your accommodation close to the beach, and plan to explore the island with guided tours, you might be fine without a car.

In Zante we also saw loads of tourists exploring the island by quad. Personally, I don’t think this is necessary, as most of the roads we drove on were asphalt roads, not dirt track roads that would require a quad.

It’s more for show if you want to try the experience, but you don’t need a quad to properly see the island (plus, cars have aircon and you don’t get sunburnt).

Where to stay in Zakynthos

The best place to stay in Zakynthos ultimately depends on the experience you want.

If you want a relaxing beach getaway you wouldn’t stay in Laganas (the party town of Zante), and if you want to party you wouldn’t stay in Keri (a quiet beach town).

I have included below some great accommodation options for every budget, but make sure to check out my guide on where to stay in Zante for a full breakdown of the best towns and hotels.

Budget: Gerovasis Apartments with Sea View – We spent five nights here and found it to be a perfect base for exploring Zante. Located in the quiet beach town of Keri, the apartment is spacious, clean, has epic views and is fairly cheap.

Do you need travel insurance for Zante?

After my personal experience spending two nights in a private hospital in Tenerife, and having to pay for it out of pocket (it wasn’t cheap), I always recommend getting travel insurance .

You might not end up needing it, but for a small fee you can travel without worries. Personally, I suggest getting your Greece travel insurance with  Heymondo .

Heymondo offers tailor made travel insurance, providing the best value for money for your specific trip. You can also buy it once you’re already abroad and have forgotten about it before flying (which, if you’re anything like me, is quite likely).

Besides the usual cancellation, medical expenses, luggage coverage and general travel insurance services, Heymondo also has a 24/7 doctor chat and instant assistance through their app.

How many days do you need in Zante?

We spent a full week in Zante, and found it perfect for the kind of holiday we were looking for (girls beach trip with a bachelorette party weekend).

That said, you don’t need a full week to explore Zante. If you have a tight Greece itinerary, you could get away with spending just 3 – 4 days in Zankynthos.

That would give you enough time to do a Zante boat tour , a kayak tour, see Navagio Shipwreck Beach and chill at some of the best beaches of the island. Many people combine a trip to Zante with Cephalonia, the nearby island.

However if you do want to spend longer in Zante, like we did, you won’t get bored. There are loads of beautiful beaches all around the island, so you could explore a different one each day and still not see them all!

10 amazing things to do in Zakynthos

See navagio shipwreck beach from above.

One particularly cool sight in Zakynthos is Navagio Shipwreck Beach . Here you’ll find the rusting remains of a ship that ran aground here in 1980 (was it smuggling contraband for the Italian mafia? We’ll never know!).

The famous view of the beach, long on people’s list of Zakynthos things to do, is actually “off limits” — a spot on the cliffs behind a fence.

But there’s a hole in the fence and a well-trodden path leading to the unofficial viewpoint. If you do want to do this, be safe and do not stand too close to the cliff edge just to get a good photo!

Otherwise, there’s an “official” viewpoint, a deck with a guard rail that juts out from the cliff itself.

There’s often a queue and the view isn’t as good as the off limits one, but it’s still a pretty magical view of one of the most iconic beaches in Greece!

See Navagio Shipwreck Beach from the sea

Not only can you see the shipwreck from the cliffs, but you can also see it close up from the sea.

It looks quite dramatic on the backdrop of towering white cliffs and stunning turquoise sea. It’s somewhere to hit up if you’re in Zakynthos.

What to do here, however, has been limited because the beach is now closed and has been since earlier in 2024.

This was for safety reasons, due to rocks falling from the cliff above. But while you can’t actually go to the beach, you can see it from the sea on a boat — still looks cool!

Boat trip around Zakynthos

This brings me to this next point: boat tours! Being an island, it’s only natural that a boat ride around its stunning coastline is one of the best things to do in Zante. There are a few different types of tours that you can get involved with.

One of the must-do activities in Zakynthos, a boat tour means you get to visit stunning beaches and caves that you can’t reach via land. Think beautiful turquoise water, epic cliffs, hidden coves.

When it comes to boat tours in Zante, you can choose between private tours (better, more flexible and more relaxing, but obviously more expensive) and shared group tours.

And when it comes to itineraries, you can usually pick between a half-day tour that either goes to the northern coast of Zakynthos, a half-day tour to southern Zakynthos, or a full-day tour that does the full island.

Here are some of the best Zante boat tours out there.

Porto Vromi: Cruise to Navagio, Turtle island & Keri Caves   – This private boat tour is similar to the one we did. You will have a boat just for your group, which will give you maximum flexibility on your itinerary.

The captain will have some set stops like Turtle Island, Navagio Shipwreck Beach and the Blue Caves , but if you want to spend less or more time in specific spots you can just tell him so.

This tour lasts all day, and is perfect for those who want to see all the sights of Zante from the sea in one go.

Zakynthos: Half-Day Tour to Turtle Island and Keri Caves   – This 5-hour adventure takes you through the southern portion of Zakynthos. On the tour, you’ll embark on a cruise to Turtle Island and the stunning Keri Caves.

Depending on the size of your group, you could also do this as a private tour if you want more privacy and flexibility.

Zakynthos Island: Navagio Shipwreck Beach & Blue Caves Tour –  But if you want to see pretty much all of the top sights in Zakynthos, look no further than this 9-hour, full-day tour.

It includes several beaches, a trip to Shipwreck Beach, numerous viewpoints, and even some inland journeys such as to Exo Chora and its 2,000-year-old olive tree.

Go kayaking at Keri Caves

Accessible only by sea, Keri Caves are a network of sea caves and arches located on the southwest coast of the island. To do this sort of thing, most likely you’ll be joining a kayak tour.

There are options for kayak tours in Zakynthos. A lot of people choose to kayak to Turtle Island or the Blue Caves, but generally speaking, these are busier spots.

One of the reasons I liked Keri Caves was because it didn’t seem as busy (i.e. fewer people and other kayaks).

But there’s more to like than just that. You get to kayak through the soaring rocky arches, into the caves, and discover little beaches where turquoise water laps.

The tour I went on (with a company called Adventure Zone ) lasted around 3.5 hours, and took in 4.5 miles of kayaking.

Relax at the beach!

There’s literally no way you can take a holiday to this sparkling island without spending time sunning yourself on the beach.

It’s a super popular European beach holiday destination, so it’s only natural that beach chilling is a must-do activity.

So it’s no surprise that some of the best places to visit in Zante are beaches. There are plenty of them, so I’ve put together a list of my favourites to help inspire your days of sun, sea and sand.

Pelagaki Beach

This super scenic rocky beach, with its cliffs and greenery, is one of the best in Zakynthos.

There are two sides to this particular beach: the right side is more easy to access (via a staircase), whilst the left side is a little more tricky.

It requires you to climb over some rocks to reach it, but because of that, this prettier side of the beach is also less busy.

There’s free parking available at the top of the beach, but I’d recommend getting there early to secure a spot. There are sunbeds you can rent for a small fee on the right side, while you can order drinks and food from the beach bar.

Tip: Bring shoes, as the pebbles can be a bit painful underfoot!

Dafni Beach

Dafni Beach comes with many rules attached to it. That’s because it’s a protected part of the coast where turtles come to lay their eggs, which makes it something to put on your list of what to see in Zakynthos if you’re a nature fan.

The road down to the beach is quite winding, and tricky to navigate if you’re not used to it, but it’s worth the effort. Once you’re there, you’ll find free parking, golden sand and plenty of snorkelling opportunities in the shallow water.

There are also plenty of cute restaurants along the beach, which offer sunbeds. Some of the sunbeds are free, as long as you purchase food or drink from the restaurant.

Porto Limnionas

This slice of the Zante coastline isn’t technically a beach, but I’d say it’s great for a chill day of shoreline fun.

Basically, it’s a rocky inlet, but there’s plenty to explore around the coastline, and the snorkelling is amazing (the water is super clear).

You’ll find a beach club occupying both sides of the gorge, where you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas (15 Euros). Plus diving and swimming in the beautiful crystal-clear turquoise waters below makes for a really idyllic day.

Porto Roxa Beach

Similar to Porto Limnionas, Porto Roxa Beach is more of a rocky cove, except this time there are no steep gorge sides.

You can rent sunbeds and umbrellas (around 15 Euros) and chill out directly on the rocks, where you’ll have access to the gleaming sea all day.

The snorkelling here is really fun, if that’s what you like, but otherwise it’s just a beautiful spot to chill for an afternoon.

White Beach

There are several must-see Zakynthos beaches that you can only reach by boat, and White Beach is one of them.

It’s set on the northern part of the island, on the other side of a promontory to Navagio Beach, so the tours that go here usually hit up both.

Don’t be fooled by the name: it’s the rocks that are white, not sand. But it’s a stunning beach, very photogenic, with gorgeous turquoise water that practically invites you in for a dip.

Makris Gialos Beach

You’ll find Makris Gialos Beach close to Pelagaki Beach. It’s easily reached by car, which is good news since it’s such a beautiful beach, complete with green-clad cliffs, smooth pebbles and clear water.

It’s a bit of a hidden gem, and definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. I would recommend getting there early, as the sunbeds do tend to fill up quite quickly.

Once you’re there, stay for a few hours, enjoy a long lunch at one of the restaurants or bars (there are several), and swim among the marine life that calls this beautiful beach home.

See the sunset over Myzithres

Seeing the sunset over Myzithres is a must-see Zakynthos moment.

This super scenic spot can be found at the top of tall limestone cliffs, where the view out over the twin rock formation called Myzithres is always stunning — let alone at sunset!

Come for the sunset and the view is made even more stunning. You can get there by car, but the roads aren’t great, so it can be a little tricky if you’re not used to that sort of driving.

But the sight of those white jagged rocks jutting out of the bright sparkling water as the sky turns red more than makes up for any difficulties you have.

Eat at a local Greek “taverna”

There’s nothing quite like eating local food in Greece. Whether it’s Greek salad, fish, or moussaka, there’s no getting away from how delicious everything is!

One of my favourite traditional tavernas in Zakynthos is Pirounaki Traditional Restaurant. Beautifully set under olive trees in a dreamy garden, it boasts affordable home-cooked food. A very special place!

There’s also Nobelos Seaside Lodge Bio Restaurant. Slightly more expensive, but it’s a waterfront eatery (so, amazing views!). If you spend more than 50 Euros here, you get a sunbed so you lounge on the beach after lunch.

Porto Roulis is a traditional taverna overlooking the sea. It’s a rustic setting, where you can tuck into super fresh fish and other seafood, with the best views out over Kefalonia. The sunset is stunning from here.

Go turtle spotting!

Zakynthos is a haven for turtles, and not just unofficially. Parts of it make up the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, which encompasses Laganas Bay in the south of the island.

The park protects this part of the Mediterranean, which is crucial for nesting sea turtles.   Turtles, specifically loggerhead turtles (also known as caretta-caretta turtles), come here every year to lay their eggs on the shores of Zante.

Over 2,000 nests are found in this marine park each year, which forms a breeding ground for 80% of the loggerhead turtle population in the Mediterranean.

They lay their eggs between May and August, with the rest of their lives spent out at sea.

A definite Zakynthos must-see (especially if you’re an animal lover) would be to go and see turtles. I really wouldn’t recommend a glass-bottom boat tour — from what I’ve seen, they appear to harass and overwhelm the turtles.

Instead try a more sustainable way of seeing them, like snorkelling or scuba diving tours. There are a few, like this guided boat tour to Turtle Island , but you may also be lucky enough to see a turtle pass by while you’re snorkelling by yourself!

Explore Zakynthos town centre

One of the best things to do in Zakynthos is to simply wander around Zante Town (also known as Zakynthos Town). There’s plenty to see and do here, from historic sights to a whole host of bars and restaurants to sample.

This town is actually the capital of the island, home to its main port and most of the population. Spend some time here exploring the streets in the city center, including Alexander Roma Street, and people-watch in San Marco Square.

There are several churches dotted around the town. The 16th-century Church of Agios Nikolaos of Molos is the most picturesque, overlooking the sea and gorgeously illuminated after dark. It looks beautiful inside, too!

You’ll also find the ruins of a Venetian castle in Zante Town. This is situated on Bochali Hill, which also has some pretty amazing views down towards the town.

There’s also plenty of history to discover: the castle itself was built on the ruins of an ancient Greek acropolis.

Enjoy the nightlife!

Zante or Zakynthos is well known across Europe for its nightlife. As the summer season sets in, the party begins and revellers arrive from far and wide to let their hair down.

The main hub for nightlife is Laganas, where the main strip is loud and crowded with bars. If you’re looking for late-night things to do in Zakynthos, Greece, and you want to dance the night away, it’ll be a good spot for you.

There are other places too, like beach parties at Banana Beach.

It was my first time in this gorgeous Greek island, and I can’t believe I’d never visited it before! With its beautiful beaches, dramatic coastline, delicious cuisine and cheap prices, it’s a great European summer destination.

After visiting Santorini and Ios last year (where we went hiking and on boat trips ), and then Zante this summer, I think I’m going to turn Greek island hopping into a summer tradition!

After all, island hopping in Greece is a must on many Europe bucket lists , if not travel bucket lists !

15 Best Things to Do in Zakynthos (Greece)

On the Ionian Island of Zakynthos (Zante) there’s a world of difference between the mountainous north and west and the flatter south and east, where most of the beaches are found.

The upper regions have bright white limestone cliffs plummeting to inlets and coves like the marvellous Navagio, which can only be reached by boat.

Much of the southwest, around Laganas Bay, is occupied by the Greek National Marine Park as a nesting area for the loggerhead sea turtle (caretta caretta). This creature lays its eggs on the sandy beaches in the summer, and you’ll be able to go turtle-spotting on glass-bottom boats and observe the hatchlings scrabbling for the water after sunset.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Zakynthos :

1. Navagio (Shipwreck Cove)

Navagio, Zakynthos

In the northeast of Zakynthos is a cove embraced by towering white limestone cliffs.

Beneath them on the white beach are the rusting remains of the MV Panagiotis, a container ship than ran aground in 1980. There are two ways to experience this awe-inspiring natural sight: From above you can drive or catch a tourist bus to Navagio Beach View and queue up for what must be the island’s most emblematic scene, of the shipwreck and the cove’s glowing blue water far below.

By sea you could charter your own boat if you want to be independent, or board a tourist cruise from Porto Vromi, Agios Nikolaos Port in Volimes or Zakynthos Town on the east coast.

If you don’t mind crowds you can sunbathe on the beach, swim in the ethereal water, marvel at the cliffs and explore the wreck.

2. Kalamaki Beach

Kalamaki Beach

One of a few beaches that we’ll mention in the Greek National Marine Park, Kalamaki is on the eastern pocket of Laganas Bay and could be the best on the island.

The coastline is protected, which keeps tourist development discreet and away from the beach.

There’s nothing more than a single bar renting out parasols and sun loungers.

And as you’re in a national park, the beach is diligently maintained.

The golden sand is spotless, while the beach shelves very gradually to warm, transparent waters.

On the shore you’ll see swimmers hundreds of metres out as the sea is so calm and shallow in this bay.

3. Blue Caves

Blue Caves, Zakynthos

The little harbour at Skinari in the very north of Zakynthos is the point of departure for trips to the Blue Caves, also only accessed by water.

Within minutes you’ll be floating through a magnificent set of limestone sea caves and natural arches.

There’s nothing accidental about the name of these formations as the water has what can only be described as a shade of milky blue, caused by the interplay of the sun and the white limestone.

You’ll be allowed to jump in for a swim and don’t be alarmed to see your skin turn a ghostly hue under the surface.

4. Porto Limnionas Beach

Porto Limnionas Beach

A newly laid road from the village of Agios Leon weaves down to this fjord on the west coast, bounded on its east side by high white cliffs hollowed with caves.

Resting above the fjord on the western slope is a taverna with tables and sun loungers on terraces where you gaze into the pristine blue water.

Further down are rocks and concrete platforms where people lay their towels, and you’ll find it hard to resist bathing in the shimmering, crystalline water and stepping onto the tiny beach at the northern end.

5. Marathonisi

Marathonisi Island

This islet in Laganas Bay in the south of Zakythos is often called Turtle Island, as it’s a hatching ground for the loggerhead sea turtle.

For that reason Marathonisi is uninhabited and visitors have to clear the sandy beach to the north before sunset in summer to allow the turtles to come ashore to lay their eggs.

At the southern harbours of Limni Keriou and Laganas you can embark on turtle-spotting cruises to the island, normally on a glass-bottom boat.

The clarity of the water means you’ll have a good chance of seeing one or two.

You’ll be given up to an hour on the island to sunbathe, swim and have a picnic at this unspoiled setting.

6. Agios Dionisios Church

Agios Dionisios Church

The relics of St Dionysios, the island’s patron saint are kept at this church right on the harbour in Zakynthos Town where they have been since 1717. His reliquary is carried around the town on his saint’s day, on August 24th, and the sarcophagus is opened daily just before noon for worshippers.

The original church was razed by an earthquake in 1893, this reconstructed building dates to 1948 and was one of the few left standing after the earthquake in 1953. In the classic neo-Byzantine style the barrel vault and walls of this St Dyonisios are decorated with frescoes, like the Panagia of the Madonna and infant Jesus in the apse.

The church museum has four works by the eminent 18th-century painter Nikolaos Koutouzis.

7. Keri Caves

Keri Caves, Zakynthos

At the villages on the south coast like Limni Keriou, Agios Sostis and Laganas you can book a boat tour along the indented coastline in the far south of the island.

The white cliffs soar to 300 metres and at their base are small sea caves and natural arches.

At one the boat will lower a ladder for you to swim in the sea, which has a radiance caused by the purity of the water and the sun hitting the white rocks.

You can swim into the caves to look around, and might be amazed to learn that the sea is at least 20 metres deep at the base of the cliffs.

The Keri Caves are often included as a stop on turtle-spotting excursions to Marathonisi.

8. Banana Beach

Banana Beach, Zakynthos

The longest beach on Zakynthos is also one of the most alluring, for its soft golden sand and shallow transparent sea.

Banana Beach is in the Greek National Marine Park in the southeast of the island, but that doesn’t mean that there’s an absence of facilities.

For almost the whole length you can hire sun loungers, or your own beach pergola if you’re feeling decadent.

These are all rented out by the Banana Casa Playa bar and restaurant, which lays on full service.

On the eastern end there’s a watersports centre for activities like parasailing, jetskiing and waterskiing.

9. Anafonitria Monastery

Anafonitria Monastery

A stone’s throw from Navagio is a monastery from the island’s Byzantine period, consecrated in the middle of the 15th century and unharmed by the earthquake of 1953. Saint Dionysios, the patron saint of Zakynthos resided here at the end of his life in the 1500s.

The monastery has a quaint stone tower, originally built to defend the complex but later turned into a campanile.

The church is embellished with stunning if slightly time-worn hagiography.

Maybe the most photogenic spot is the courtyard, with free-standing columns, fruit trees, palms and flowers, growing in pots and vines creeping up the rustic stone walls.

10. Panagia Skopiotissa Monastery

Panagia Skopiotissa Monastery

Resting atop Mount Skopos in the southeast of Zakynthos, the Panagia Skopiotissa Monastery is a gruelling climb worthwhile for its 15th-century church and the exhilarating scenery.

The church walls are coated with frescoes and there’s an icon of the Virgin Mary produced in Constantinople and brought to Zakynthos after it was taken by the Ottoman Empire.

On the floor of the church you won’t help but notice the double-headed eagle, an emblem for the Byzantine Empire.

A lot of the joy of the monastery is the journey there, as you can hike up a winding path from the coastal resort of Kalamaki.

When the sun is glaring in mid-summer, you can always drive up the snaking mountain road from Argassi to the north.

11. Gerakas Beach

Gerakas Beach, Zakynthos

The southernmost beach on Zakynthos is also one of the loveliest, and has a western-facing curve of golden sand lapped by pure turquoise waters.

Behind the beach are precipitous sandy hills that get rockier at each end.

Looking towards the south, there’s a majestic promontory with bare rock layered red and white.

This more secluded end is also favoured by naturists.

One section of the Gerakas Beach is cordoned off, as loggerhead seat turtles use the beach as a nesting site.

These creatures mate during early summer and their eggs tend to hatch throughout the high season.

If you get up before dawn you’ll be able to watch hundreds of baby turtles shuffling to the water from the beach.

12. Byzantine Museum

Byzantine Museum, Zakynthos

In an arcaded mansion pointing out to sea on Solomos Square, the Byzantine Museum is a repository of Byzantine and post-Byzantine religious art from around the island.

From the Byzantine period there are frescoes, icons and wood carvings.

But the museum also has paintings, vestments, crucifixes and many more liturgical artefacts from the 15th to the 17th centuries.

Some of these were produced outside of Zakynthos and brought to the island when it was under Ottoman rule.

Elsewhere a scale model of the city and black and white photographs give you glimpses of how Zakynthos looked before the catastrophic earthquake of 1953.

13. Keri Lighthouse

Keri Lighthouse, Zakynthos

Near the far south of Zakynthos, this lighthouse atop a 300-metre cliffs is only part of the attraction.

A restaurant sits on the cliff-top and from its terrace you’ll be treated to a very romantic perspective of the deep blue Ionian Sea, the cliffs and the outcrops at their base.

And as the terrace points west the sunsets are magical here.

The restaurant also has a small overhanging skywalk if you have a stomach for heights.

Naturally all this comes with the cost of a meal or drinks.

But if you’d prefer to take in the view without paying you can carry on down the road for another vantage point to write home about.

14. Askos Stone Park

Askos Stone Park

In the very north of Zakynthos is an attraction that rolls a wildlife sanctuary, zoo, farm, forest reserve and archaeological site into one.

The park is named for the profusion of stone structures around, from the paving stones, to the drystone walls, stone-built stables and the remarkable cisterns cut from the cliffs and dating back six centuries.

For kids the best bit will be meeting and feeding animals like ponies, deer, peacocks, raccoons, chinchillas, turtles, goats, rabbits and pigs.

The farm is also planted with orchards for peaches and apples, grown without pesticides.

Depending on the season you may be able to get down to some rural activities like harvesting olives or milking a cow.

15. Aristeon Olive Press & Museum

Aristeon Olive Press & Museum

Zakynthos is prized for its olive oil and this free museum a few kilometres from the airport will tell you everything you need to know.

The tour begins in the 1700s, with a collection of antique implements like a wooden press and grindstones that were once powered by animals.

You can contrast these with the state-of the-art factory and its stainless steel vats and centrifuge.

On the way your guide will fill you in on some olive oil facts and point out the difference between virgin and extra virgin olive oil.

At the tasting session there’s homemade bread to dip in Aristeon’s oil, and a factory shop selling olive oil soap and garlic and lemon infused oils.

There are so many things to do on Zakynthos that you’ll want to spend at least three days enjoying the island’s attractions. If you have more time, even better!

Zakynthos Island, also widely known as Zante is located in the Ionian Islands in northwest of Greece. This name duality stems from the island’s Venetian past, where it was referred to as ‘Zante,’ a name that has persisted, especially in English-speaking countries.

We will show you the best way to explore Zakynthos Island, from visiting its traditional villages, savoring authentic Greek cuisine, and even witnessing the endangered Caretta-caretta turtles in their natural habitat. Whether you’re an adventure seeker like us, a history buff, or simply looking to relax on pristine beaches, Zakynthos will serve up a holiday filled with diverse and enriching experiences. The beaches and natural beauty of this Ionian Island capture the imagination of travelers seeking a vacation to the Greek Islands. Zakynthos is known for its nightlife in towns like Laganas but is also known for its traditional villages such as Alykes and Vasilikos. Let’s not forget its crucial role in wildlife conservation, being a sanctuary for the endangered Loggerhead turtles.

1. Blue Caves – Amazing scenery

best things to do in zakynthos greece blue caves

One of the best things to do in Zakynthos is to visit the Blue Caves. These natural arches have been carved out by erosion and are famous for the vivid color of blue water in its deepest hollows. We recommend getting out early in the morning for the best light and to avoid the crowds. Going snorkeling at the Blue Caves is one thing you do not want to miss. You will see what we mean once you dip your face in the deep blue azure water and see what is below.

You can hire a small private boat or take a tour of the many famous sites along the coast where you can go swimming and snorkeling. The fact that the Blue Caves are only accessible by boat should be reason enough to add it to your itinerary.

*Note : – cruises around the island last around 9-10 hours, so you be prepared for a long and beautiful day* Book your tour here. Most boat tours leave from Agios Nikolaos Harbor.

2. Navagio Beach – Shipwreck Beach

best things to do in zakynthos Greece shipwreck beach

Located on the west coast of Zakynthos, Navagio Beach is a cove surrounded by white sea cliffs that are 900 feet tall. The famous Navagio Beach (Which means shipwreck in Greek) has become the symbol of the island and is one of the top things to do in Zakynthos. The amazing view gives me the chills.

This secluded beach is famous for its shipwreck, the Panagiotis, which adds a touch of mystery and intrigue to the picturesque setting. It is one of the most beautiful scenes in the Greek Islands, surrounded by towering high cliffs and turquoise waters. Accessible only by boat, Navagio Beach feels like it is a little undiscovered gem – when you look at it from the sea. In truth, it is anything but undiscovered. You may also want to read: Is Greece Expensive, a complete guide to costs for travel in Greece.

Unfortunately, as of the time of this writing, Navagio Beach is closed, and you cannot go on the sandy beach itself. You can still enter the bay by boat, check out the shipwreck, and take photos, which I would prefer to do anyway. Who wants to stand on a small beach with a bunch of people getting in your way? You can book a boat tour to see Navagio Shipwreck Beach here.

The closure was due to rockfall from several small earthquakes and was put in as a safety measure. However, I also think it is an environmental issue as well, as in the past, there was overcrowding on the beach.

Shipwreck Beach is still a stop on almost all boat tours and is often combined with the Blue Cave. We recommend booking a boat tour that visits in the early morning or later in the afternoon so you are not crammed in there with a bunch of other boats. Most tour boats leave from Agios Nikolaos harbor.

3. View of Navagio Beach – Shipwreck Beach

best things to do in zakynthos greece Navagio Beach lookout

The best photo opportunity of Navagio Beach is from the lookout from the top of the cliffs. This is the classic view that has been used to market Zakynthos Island and one you have probably seen on Instagram. Because of this, you can imagine the number of people who want to see it from this angle, and you would be right. If you visit Zante Island in high season, you will be standing in line with a bunch of other people just to get to the platform for the view.

You should also be aware of a couple of things. There is only a small stand selling coffee and drinks by the platform and no bathrooms. When you get to the platform, you will have to fight for a view of the Navagio shipwreck with all the selfie-taking tourists and then crane your neck to get the postcard view above. Be careful not to drop your phone or camera as well. This view can be accessed by car or a van from Zante Town or Alyke. It’s crowded in the high season, but in the off-season, this place is a wonder of nature that gives chills to the bone.

4. Snorkeling

things to do in Zakynthos Greece Snorkeling

Snorkeling is one of the most popular activities on the island of Zakynthos (football is also popular with a professional football club), and it is one of the most exciting and adventurous things a visitor can do in Zante.

From absolute beginner to experienced divers, you can set out on an adventure to explore the depths of the Ionian Sea in the Zakynthos Marine Park. The crystal clear waters of the gulf that surrounds the main island of Zakynthos are pristine. There are many sea caves that lure you inside for some of the most unique snorkeling experiences you’ll ever have.

If you aren’t up for snorkeling, you can also book a glass-bottom boat tour that will allow you to take in the beauty of the turquoise waters and what lies below.

5. Loggerhead Sea Turtles of Laganas Bay

things to do in zakynthos snorkel with sea turtles

The island of Zante is one of the best places in the world to find the famous Loggerhead sea turtle. (Caretta-Carreta Turtle) The loggerhead sea turtle is endangered, but Zakynthos is a nesting area for them, and they lay their eggs on many of its beaches.

Note: Tourists are prohibited from visiting places where turtles lay eggs as Zante authorities protect them. (Kalamaki Beach is one of the beaches where the turtles lay their eggs, and when they are there, Kalamaki Beach is off-limits. The region between Laganas and Kalamaki Beach also has some restrictions.

You don’t need to see them laying eggs through; this giant gentle turtle can be seen swimming at Laganas Bay. If you book a snorkeling or diving trip on Zakynthos, you can see the Caretta-Caretta turtle. Trust me, the enjoyment when you see one of those will give you goosebumps. Book this boat trip to Laganus on a glass bottom boat to spot turtles.

As we suggest, with all water activities and wildlife, do your research and ensure you go with a company that practices safe snorkeling with wildlife. If you see a ton of boats pulling up alongside a turtle and everyone jumping in at once, just tell your boat captain that you don’t agree with this and to move on. The last thing we should do is cause unnecessary stress to any animal.

6. Marathonisi – Turtle Island

Marathonisi - Turtle Island in Zakynthos Greece

Marathonisi is an islet just off the southern coast of Zakynthos and has one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in the region. It is also known as Turtle Island as it looks like the shape of a turtle when you approach from Keri or Marathia. The island is also home to the Loggerhead Turtle, and the beach itself is only accessible for the first 3 meters from the shore. You will see it roped off beyond that, as it is their nesting ground. This private boat tour takes you on a luxury cruise to Turtle Island, Keri Caves, and Mizithres.

The islet is located in the Marine Park, and the blocked-off sections are monitored. The best way to get to the island is to take the Taxi Boat that shuttles from the beach to Marathonisi Island, which is about 15 minutes. The other options are renting your own boat or jumping on an organized tour. Whichever way you choose, you will be glad you added this island to your trip.

7. Keri Caves

what to do in zakynthos keri caves

Just outside of Zakynthos Town are the Keri Caves. The Keri Caves are a series of sea caves located along the island’s southwestern coast. Their extraordinary beauty and crystal-clear waters make them a popular spot for tourists. These caves are accessible only by sea, and many visitors explore them via tour boat that include opportunities for swimming and snorkeling. Combine the beauty of the underwater world with white sea cliffs reaching up from the clear azure waters, makes for a spectacular day trip.

Like most popular snorkeling spots in Zakynthos, you can also go via a glass-bottom boat . The waters are so clear; these are very popular on the island. A Keri Caves tour stops at Turtle Island to spot sea turtles as well.

You can even rent a boat if you feel comfortable to explore around the island at your own pace.

9. Keri Beach

Keri Beach is another popular beach that is located in the village of Keri, in the southwestern part of the island, this picturesque beach is known for its crystal-clear waters and pebble-lined shores, making it a paradise for swimmers and snorkelers.

The charm of Keri Beach lies in its peaceful setting, away from the bustling crowds, where visitors can unwind and soak in the Mediterranean sun. The beachfront is dotted with traditional tavernas where you can savor authentic Greek dishes while enjoying views of the Ionian Sea.

This is the jumping off point to the nearby Keri Caves and Marathonisi Island which are accessible by boat tours. For those interested in a more leisurely experience, renting a sunbed and simply relaxing by the azure waters is a delightful option.

10. Keri Lighthouse

Keri Lighthouse is a remarkable landmark located in the picturesque village of Keri, on the southwestern tip of Zakynthos. This historic lighthouse stands as a beacon, offering some of the best views of the Ionian Sea and the surrounding limestone cliffs.

While there, you can enjoy some delicious Greek cuisine at the Keri Lighthouse Restaurant. This popular eatery is renowned for its strategic location at one of the island’s most scenic vantage points, offering panoramic views of the Ionian Sea and the surrounding landscapes The Keri Lighthouse Restaurant terrace is a perfect spot for a meal or a drink, especially during sunset when the sky and sea are painted in vibrant hues.

The golden sandy beach of Banana Beach is the longest beach in Zakynthos. Located in the Vasilikos region, Banana Beach is easily accessible to make a day out at the beach, which is full of sun, sea, and sand. Its sheer size ensures there’s always a spot on the soft, golden sands, making it perfect for families and groups.

There are activities and water sports like jet skiing and parasailing, as well as more relaxed options such as sunbed rentals and paddleboarding. The beach area is dotted with a variety of restaurants and beach bars, making it the perfect place to spend the day. This secluded cove on the west coast is yet another place with calm azure waters. Impressive rock formations and steep cliffs surround this popular snorkeling and swimming area. And there are chairs with beach umbrellas to rent.

With the Limnionas Tavern nearby, visitors can enjoy local Greek cuisine while soaking in the tranquil views over Porto Limnonas. More people are starting to learn about Porto Limnionas beach, but that doesn’t detract from its beauty. However, Porto Limnionas Beach is not large with only a small beach area, so it does get crowded.

16. Laganas Beach Party

Fun things to do in Zante Laganas Beach Party

We mentioned that Zakynthos is known for its nightlife. The island of Zante is not called “The Party Island” for a  reason. The central part that gets this attribute is a resort area called Laganas. A vast number of clubs, bars, and restaurants are placed here for a reason. The area attracts a hip and youthful crowd with its mix of international DJs, lively bars, and nightclubs right on the sand.

This is the epicenter of all the parties, with tasty cocktails flowing. The crowds rush to hit the strip every night from 10 p.m. and party in packed clubs until morning. The vibe and energy pulse in every direction, and it is easy to go barhopping all night long. The beachfront is lined with venues offering a variety of music and themes, ensuring there’s something for every taste where guests can enjoy cocktails and snacks under the stars.

The themed parties can get pretty wild where they pour neon colors on people, bathe in vast amounts of white foam, and the clubs put on special fireworks displays almost three times a week. So you get the idea of the atmosphere and vibe you can experience on Zante here.

17. Agios Nikolaos Beach, aka St Nicolas Beach

The island of Zakynthos also has many historical attractions. The rich history of Zakynthos dates from 1600. B.C. One of the most famous people who lived in Zakynthos was Dionysios Solomos. He was a native of Zakynthos and Greece’s national poet, who wrote the Greek national anthem.

When is the Best time to Visit Zakynthos?

When to visit Zakynthos Greece

The best times to visit Zakynthos depend largely on your preferences for weather, crowds, and activities. Generally, the most ideal times are during the late spring, early summer, and early autumn months.

Late Spring (May to Early June) : This period offers pleasant weather with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). The island is less crowded, making it perfect for exploring the natural beauty and attractions in relative tranquility. The sea temperatures are also warming up, which is suitable for swimming and water activities.

Early Summer (Late June to Early July) : Early summer is ideal for those wanting to enjoy the warm weather without the peak season crowds. The temperatures range from 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F). This time is great for beach activities, water sports, and exploring the island’s outdoor attractions.

Early Autumn (September to October) : The weather remains warm (around 20°C to 25°C or 68°F to 77°F) but with fewer tourists. This particular beach also known as Shipwreck Beach is an exposed cove that is also sometimes nicknamed Smugglers Cove since its tucked-away location was perfect for sneaking in goods in the dead of night. It really is a contender for the best landscapes in Europe !

It used to be called Agios Georgios but was renamed in 1980 after a freighter named the MV Panagiotis ran aground on the shore of the beach while trying to escape from the Greek navy as the ship was smuggling goods such as cigarettes and alcohol.

The ship was abandoned, and since then it has been left on the beach – making it quite a popular tourist attraction as you can walk right up to it and explore. It has decayed quite a lot, but it still looks magnificent . There have been claims that the real story is the ship was wrecked due to bad weather conditions, but we much prefer the adventurous tale of smugglers escaping the law.

So, is Shipwreck on your list of the best things to do on Zakynthos island? 🙂

Things to do in Zakynthos - Navagio Beach & Shipwreck View Point

Top things to do Zakynthos? The beach , as well as the surrounding area , is truly spectacular ! It is a perfect place to take a few photos together while you are on your trip. While you can visit the ship up-close , there is also an amazing view that you have to take advantage of. The site isn’t just glorious , it is also incredibly romantic – for many people, this is the most magical and romantic place in Europe . Midday is the perfect time to visit if you want to witness the water sparkling as the sun hits it.

The colour of the water is just out of the world and is one of the top Zakynthos attractions.

And YES! It really looks like in the pictures. We couldn’t believe we have seen in real 🙂

Our advice is to skip the official viewing point balcony and head a little further right. You will find a little path that is lined with rocks and bushes. It will lead you to the most spectacular location! You get the ship , the sea , and the beach in one shot – just a stunning spot you will love! 🙂

2. Xigia Beach

What to do in Zakynthos Greece? This is a very unique place on our Zakynthos things-to-do list. It’s just stunning!

While on Zakynthos, you will likely be visiting as many beaches as possible. So we have another of Zakynthos’ wonders for you to take a trip to – the Xigia beach !

At first, you might notice that the water in Xigia has both a strange colour – as well as cloudy with an almost milky coating. This is because it has a high concentration of sulphur. It really is one of the best things to do in Zante!

Yes, the same you can find in the Blue Lagoon in Iceland .

The sulphur comes from the neighbouring caves , making it quite a unique spot. If you suffer from joint pain or arthritis, the water is said to have healing properties that can help to ease the symptoms.

There is also a small car park and a little canteen if you fancy a quick lunch by the water.

What to see in Zakynthos? Turtles are amongst the top Zante attractions!

There are actually quite a few boat tours that you can take to see the Caretta Caretta Turtles in Zakynthos . But there is one outstanding , which was recommended to us. It’s Levante Speedboat Excursions with captain Spiros .

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!! 🙂

He is a very reputable boat owner that respects marine laws and will not harass the turtles. The number of turtles is shrinking so they need to be protected.

They also organise boat tours to Shipwreck Beach . Unfortunately, our trip was cancelled due to the weather conditions

You can choose another company if you fancy. Just keep in mind (if you want to see the turtles) that Laganas Bay and the Keri Caves are exactly where you need to be 🙂

best towns to visit in zante

The 10 best things to do in Zante

Z ante is renowned for raucous nightlife, but there’s a far more authentic side to the Venetians 'Fiore di Levante' (flower of the Levante) .

For such a small island, scenery is extremely varied: the southern coastline - home to Laganas’ notorious nightlife strip - also encompasses the pristine beaches of Zakynthos Marine Park, where loggerhead sea turtle come to nest, whilst some of the island’s best-known attractions, including Navagio beach on the cliff-lined northerly coast, can only be reached by boat.

Birthplace of the man who penned Greece’s national anthem, Zante was also a magnet for literary greats: Byron lay in state here and philhellene Edgar Allan Poe wrote a sonnet to the island’s ‘verdant slopes’.

Last but not least, food is a powerful lure here: sit in a rustic sea view tavern sipping local Verdea white wine with a plate full of traditional kouneli stifado garlic and tomato-soaked rabbit stew and you’ll be hooked.

For further Zante inspiration, see our guides to the isalnds's best  hotels ,  restaurants  and  nightlife . Plan an extended visit with our  ultimate guide to planning a Greek island-hopping holiday.

Take the train

The white trainaki (little train) which trundles out of Zante town to Kalamaki’s cafĂ©-lined beach – stopping off en route to discover perfume workshops (scents are inspired by Mediterranean landscapes), and ceramic workshops selling Byzantine-style crocks – is an ideal and eco-friendly way to see the island’s sights. Another train leaving from Alykes beach chugs through ancient olive groves to visit the high flung mountain villages of Katastari and Pigadakia, and culminates in a boozy tasting session – local Graigos wine served with spicy lado tyri cheese and other specialties in the tree-shaded tavern Kaki Rahi.

Insider's tip:  Travel sickness sufferers should sit near the front.

Contact: trainaki.com

Discover the wildlife

Zante is a haven for the endangered loggerhead turtle that clamber ashore to lay their eggs on the protected beaches of Zakynthos’ Marine Park. Other critically endangered species that can be found frolicking in this protected zone, which stretches from wild and lonely Cape Marathia to Gerakas’ talc-soft beach, include doe-eyed Mediterranean monk seals. To get up close without disturbing them, take a day trip to Marathonissi – better known as Turtle Island – with eco-friendly experts Nefis Travel.

Insider's tip: Never disturb the turtles, or stay on the beaches after sunset when they could be nesting or hatching out.

Contact: nefis-travel.com

Hitch a boat ride

Some of the island’s best attractions can only be reached by boat: Skinari is the starting point for half-day excursions to get a glimpse of Navagio, or Shipwreck beach, the dramatically picturesque cliff-framed sandy cove which earns its name from the rusted hulk of the MV Panagiotis, washed up here after an epic storm in the 1980s. Most trips also stop off at the Blue Caves, so-called because their pale limestone walls give the sea a ghostly turquoise hue.

Insider's tip: The Navagio viewpoint near Volimes village is accessible by road, but it’s impossible to access the beach from this high-flung spot.

Meet the literatis

Dig deep into the soul of this culture-loving island at the Solomos Museum, which is dedicated to Greece’s national poet, who was born here in 1798. The poet’s primrose-yellow neoclassical home, which was bombed during the Second World War, contains an eclectic and fascinating selection of the writer’s personal artefacts: look out for the desk where Dionysios penned the country’s rousing national anthem in 1823 and the mausoleum on the ground floor which contains the poet’s bones.

Insider's tip: Don’t miss the other rooms dedicated to the life and times of other famous island scholars, including celebrated Greek Revolution poet Andreas Kalvos.

Stroll the streets of Zante town

Destroyed by a major earthquake in 1953, then rebuilt in Venetian style, Zante town’s (semi-pedestrian) paved streets are lined with an elegant collection of buildings – low and well proportioned, with porticoes and pastel-painted facades – many of them are home to cafĂ©s and craft boutiques.

Insider's tip : Look out for the Provençal-style façade of Archontiko Roma. One of the few buildings that wasn’t reduced to rubble, this 17th-century mansion which once belonged to President of the Greek Parliament Alexander Roma is now a small museum – family portraits, works of art and period furniture give an intriguing insight into the once lavish lifestyle of the island’s aristocracy, but it is not often open so call before visiting.

Admire the views

A winding road just outside of Zante town leads to Bochali, a pretty pine-scented suburb where the ruined battlements of the island’s battered 15th-century castle offer eagle-eye views over Zante’s red-tiled roofs, glittering harbour and the dense pine forests and sand beaches of distant Vassilikos peninsula. Enter the incense-scented Zoodoxo Pigi church to see richly gilded Byzantine icons, and then hike back down to Bochali village nearby and order a beer and meze snacks in one of the cafĂ©s clustered around the square.

Insider's tip:  Phone in advance to check that the church is open.

Roam with local deer

Families will love Askos Stone Park, named for its pond-sized 13th-century stone cisterns, whose tranquil green waters now squawk with ducks. Friendly guides lead walks out along the wooded hiking trails of this small nature park surrounded by dense pine forest: to pluck and sniff the wild thyme and oregano used to flavour countless local dishes, or to (hopefully) encounter Roe deer that run wild here. Children can also pick peaches and apples in the orchard or pet the farm animals which include portly pot-bellied pigs and fluffy chinchilla rabbits.

Insider's tip:  Buy handcrafted goats cheese and homemade jams from the farm shop.

Visit a winery

Historically, most of the island’s grape production was exported as currants – even so, Zante’s dry, highly alcoholic wine is well worth sampling in one of the island’s half a dozen wineries. The typical local wine is the oak-barrel-aged, intensely flavoured, highly acidic white Verdea, which has been produced here since the 19th century – another must-try is the silky-sweet Lianoroidi white. Sample both at Art and Wine, the Giatras-Gkoumas family’s century-old wine estate in the island’s north east region. Owner Giannis is also a skilled icon painter.

Insider's tip: Hire a car – most wineries are well off the beaten track.

Learn about the local olive oil

The 2,000-year-old olive tree in the village of Exo Hora is living proof that world class extra virgin olive oil has been produced on Zante for millennia. Aristeon Olive Press is a (rather characterless) modern factory producing some of the island’s best organic oil, but the small well-organised museum inside is packed with olive oil-making paraphernalia – age-pitted stone mills, ancient wooden presses and tall clay pots. An informative guided visit is followed by a tasting session, when crusty local bread is dipped into fruity green oil.

Insider's tip:  Visits are free but remember to tip the guide.

From the resort of Kalamaki on Zante’s south east coast, it’s a long, steep hike along thyme-scented, boulder-strewn paths to reach Panagia Skopiotissa (the island’s oldest monastery), but it’s well worth it for the views from this lofty leafy mountaintop whose name – Skopos – means watchtower. The monastery has been abandoned for decades, but the walls of the stocky 15th-century church blaze with 17th-century frescoes – the real gem is the gilded Panagia Skopiotissa icon said to have been brought here from Constantinople in 1341.

Insider's tip: Ask for the keys to the church at Skopos’ small cafĂ©.

More popularly known as ‘Zante’ , Zakynthos is the third largest Greek island in the Ionian Sea, and one of the most popular with those who regularly holiday on the Greek Isles. Zakynthos is a holiday isle for all age-groups and interests.

Nature lovers can enjoy over 7,000 species of plants; and endangered turtles, and seals.

It was ruled by the Venetians from the 15th century until 1797, and it still has many old churches and archaeological places of interest from the Venetian era .

For the sea and sun lovers , there are over 25 great beaches dotted around the coast, all with their own unique charm and attractions. For the party people , there are fabulous local and international restaurants to be visited, and bars and clubs where you can dance till dawn.

The following is our shortlist of the best places to stay in Zakynthos.

Table of Contents

10 Best Areas Where to Stay in Zakynthos

1. Zakynthos Town, a city with something for everyone

Best Areas Where to Stay in Zakynthos

In 1953, the island’s capital and thriving shipping port was hit by a large earthquake and subsequent fire, which destroyed much of the infrastructure. Rebuilding was rapidly undertaken, ensuring the old town retained as much of its old style architecture and layout as possible.

Now, the town is a mix of modern port facilities, and an old town area where much of its Venetian history has been meticulously rebuilt.

Be sure to visit Solomos Square . Surrounded by traditional Zakynthos architecture, and home to the Public Library and the Post-Byzantium Museum , the centre of the square is dominated by a statue of Dionysios Solomos, the Greek national poet.

While in the square, look out for Strata Marina , the old coast road which runs from Solomos Square to the church of Agios Dionysios , the island’s patron-saint. It is one of the town’s busiest areas with myriad shops, bars, cafes, and restaurants to browse, as you stroll the cobbled streets.

Another pretty square to look out for is the Agios Markos Square , or Freedom Square, where in 1797, the Libro d’ Oro (book of Italian Nobility), was burnt, and the Tree of Freedom planted. You will also find here The Museum of Solomos, Kalvos and Eminent Zakynthians .

From the square you can join Alexandros Romas street . Lined with large shopping arcades, coffee shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants, it is the town’s main commercial area .

Other places of interest around town include the Venetian Castle , on a cliff top overlooking the port. The 17th century church of Agios Nikolaos. The Agios Dionysios Church in the port. The Catholic Church of Agios Markos, built in 1516, and the Agios Georgios Church.

The main beach area at the end of the port is favoured by both visitors and locals, and is popular with families.

There are plenty of family friendly restaurants and cafĂ©/bars dotted around the cobbled streets or on terraced rooftops for dining out in the evening, as well as a large choice of local taverns.

For the 18-30s, live music, and bars and clubs open until the early hours, can be found on the edge of town.

2. Tsilivi, popular place to stay in Zakynthos for families

Tsilivi, popular place to stay in Zakynthos for families

On the northeast coast of the island, just 5km from Zakynthos Town and 9km from the airport, Tsilivi is rapidly becoming the resort of choice for visitors of all ages, especially families .

It is a resort that in recent years has seen a major increase in its visitor facilities. Now, not only does it have a pristine sandy beach with a host of water-sports including pedalos and jet skis, but a new mini-golf course, bowling green, entertainment centre, and waterpark have been added.

The beach holds a blue flag for excellence, is safe for children , and comes with the usual sunbeds, parasols, and bars and cafes spread along the walkway.

The centre of the resort provides plenty of opportunities for a little retail therapy. Whether a new bag, flip-flops, tee-shirt or food and provisions for your self-catering apartment, you’ll find supermarkets, souvenir and gift shops, jewellers, and fashion boutiques, all mixed in with friendly Greek taverns , cafes, restaurants, and coffee shops.

In the evening you can enjoy a romantic meal for two, or choose a fast-food take-out for the family. Tsilivi has an excellent range of local and international restaurants , seafood grills, and fast-food options to suit all palates.

The majority of night-time bars are relatively quiet affairs , but you can easily find those with quiz nights, background music, karaoke, or traditional Greek music.

For the young and young-at-heart looking for something a little livelier, consider booking one of the many beach parties , where you can party till dawn.

If you’re considering Tsilivi for your stay in Zakynthos, accommodation is available across all levels from self-catering, to mid-range and luxury hotels.

3. Psarou – Amoudi, a little piece of paradise

Psarou, a little piece of paradise to stay in Zakynthos

For those looking for a sunshine holiday away from the usual busy tourist areas , where they can unwind and recharge the batteries, Psarou (next to Amoudi) , by Zakynthos Town, ticks all the boxes.

Situated on the island’s north coast, Psarou Beach is just a couple of kilometres from the resort of Alykanas , and like its neighbour has managed to retain much of its Greek heritage, apart from the few apartment blocks that have been built.

It is a totally unspoilt resort area that offers an insight into how Zakynthos must have been pre-package holidays. Psarou, one of seven local beaches, is a blue flag, narrow strip of sandy beach which shelves gently into the turquoise sea , making it suitable for children of all ages.

Although not the most picturesque of Zakynthos beaches, it makes up for it with its unspoilt coastline and countryside. The only sunbeds and parasols on the beach are for use by the few apartments.

There are no shops or WCs lining the beach, there are no water-sports , and you’ll have to hunt for a local bar away from the front, so packed lunches and bottled drinks are the order of the day.

During the day, if you want time away from the beach, you can explore the villages, olive groves, and vineyards dotted around the area, visit the local towns, or drive into Zakynthos Town, which is around 20 minutes away.

Likewise evenings tend to be very quiet, with many visitors choosing to enjoy dinner, drinks, and the hospitality of local taverns, or exploring farther afield in the local towns.

If you fancy some time at Psarou during your stay in Zakynthos, there are a few apartment complexes close to the sea, with boutique hotels , villas, and complexes further away from the coast, but all within easy reach of the beach.

4. Alykes/Alykanas, where to stay in Zakynthos for a relaxing family holiday experience

Alykes/Alykanas, where to stay in Zakynthos for a relaxing family holiday experience

If you’re looking for a chilled out, forget the world kind of holiday, then Alykes/Alykanas may be worth a second look. The district of Alykes on the north coast of Zakynthos, includes the four main beaches of Alykanas, Alykes, Psarou, and Amoudi .

With warm, shallow, calm seas, sandy beaches, and picturesque surroundings, the resort is popular with families with younger children, and couples . As a general rule, other than Psarou which does get very busy, the beaches can be refreshingly quiet.

The coastal resort village of Alykes is surrounded by farmland, and you can pass through grape laden vineyards and olive groves as you explore the area on foot, cycle, or horseback.

Amenities by way of shops, bars, cafes, and restaurants are in the main good around the village areas, although one or two of the quieter beaches have just the bare essentials of a beach shack or café.

If you intend to do a little beach exploring, do your homework, and if necessary, take a cool-box or bag with drinks and a packed lunch.

A few places of interest away from the beach areas include the 16th century St John the Baptist Monastery near the village of Katastari. The picturesque Pentokamaro Old Bridge over the River Skourtis. The shipwreck on the Smugglers Cove , and a boat trip to see the Blue Caves .

The area has an excellent and varied nightlife with a good variety of restaurants including Indian and Chinese, and plenty of local Greek tavernas where you can enjoy a quiet pint or get more involved with the evening’s entertainment.

If you fancy Alykes/Alykanas for your stay in Zakynthos they have an excellent selection of hostels, self-catering accommodation, and hotels to suit all budgets .

5. Agios Nikolaos (Skinari), quiet area with a small charming port

Agios Nikolaos (Skinari), quiet area with a small charming port in Zakynthos

With freight traffic and ferries from neighbouring Kefalonia arriving on a regular basis, Agios Nikolaos, sitting on the north coast of the island, is more a very small but charming working port than holiday area , and attracts less tourists than many of the other nearby resorts.

Although the scenery is spectacular, a fast shelving, shingle pebble beach makes it unsuitable for young children, and the majority of visitors are families and older couples wanting somewhere they can enjoy the local culture away from the regular tourist areas.

Away from the beach area, Skinari is blessed with a number of old style Greek villages , still surviving off the sea and the land as they did before the advent of package tourism.

If you want to try local goods, a visit to the village of Volimes should be pencilled in. Here you can buy homemade cheeses, wine, and honey. As well as beautiful ceramics and lace products to take home as gifts.

A short distance around the coast from Agios Nikolaos you will find the coastal village of Makri Gialos , and its attractive sandy beach . Every year a large beach party is organised, and the local taverns and beach fill up with party people of all ages, eating and drinking under the stars into the early hours.

The water here is said to have a high sulphur content , making it ideal as a natural health spa, and a great place to ‘take the waters’ for your aches and pains – and apparently, to reduce the cellulite.

For those who prefer holiday life to be a more cultural affair, Skinari ticks all the boxes. With its rugged coastline and verdant interior to be explored during the day, local shops, cafes, and cafĂ©/bars can cater for all your needs.

While local tavernas and restaurants can provide the relaxing evenings you prefer on your holidays.

If you’re thinking of booking Agios Nikolaos or the surrounding area for your stay in Zakynthos, the area has an excellent selection of self-catering apartments (including converted windmills), hostels, and budget priced hotels.

6. Argassi, a holiday destination for all

Argassi, a holiday destination for all to stay in Zakynthos

Another popular resort close to both the island’s capital and the airport, is Argassi. As package holidays began to expand back in the 1970s, Argassi was one of the first real resorts on the island, and to this day remains one of the most popular places where to stay in Zakynthos with all age groups.

The beach is a narrow, one-kilometre stretch of golden sand , overlooked by the village, local fauna, green pine forests, and the majestic Mount Skopos.

Along the length of the beach you will find hotels, apartment blocks, shops, restaurants, and bars open day and night. While on the beach itself you can hire sunbeds, parasols, water sports equipment, and book boat trips.

With the main thoroughfare running through the village, and lined with all manner of shops, supermarkets, bars, cafes, and restaurants, you will find all the little extras you may need during your stay, and plenty of places to explore on your evenings out.

Even the most ardent sun lovers enjoy a little respite during their holiday, and Argassi has a number of places of interest that are well worth a day away from the beach.

Close to the small harbour, a few feet in from the shore, is an old bridge built around 1885 , and which used to carry the main coast road, before time and the sea began eroding the coastline.

Another bridge worthy of mention is the Kamara at Vrysakia. Sitting 15 metres high , it was built during the British occupation of the island in the early 1800s.

A little further out of the village, and sitting on top of Mount Skopos , you can visit the Church of the Virgin Mary built in 1624, and the surrounding ruins of a once flourishing monastery.

If you fancy combining a little history with your night’s entertainment , add a visit to Barrage nightclub to your itinerary. Now a thriving party venue on the coast road outside of the village, it was once the summer home of Ioannis Kapodistrias, Greece’s first Prime Minister.

Argassi is a destination visited by all age groups and interests . You can spend your time on the beach topping up your tan and enjoying the various water-sports. You can explore the local flora and fauna, hiking into the interior, or by hire car or local transport.

You can spend quiet relaxing days browsing the shops, bars and restaurants of the surrounding villages. Evenings can be spent enjoying long meals in international restaurants, or fast food, on the way to the lively bars and music venues along the front.

If you’re thinking of Argassi for your stay in Zakynthos, there is an excellent selection of studio and apartment accommodation, as well as luxury villas and hotels to suit all pockets.

7. Vasilikos, where to stay in Zakynthos for nature

Vasilikos, where to stay in Zakynthos for nature

Situated on the south-east peninsular of Zakynthos, Vasilikos is more an area of unspoilt natural beauty , rather than a village tourist resort.

It is an area of steep hills interspersed with long flat areas of cultivated olive groves , pine forests, and local flora and fauna.

Groups of old Greek stone houses , many of them doubling as tavernas and restaurants, are designated as villages, while along the coast are some of the most idyllic beaches you will find on the island.

Although in areas of Vasilikos you may feel miles from civilisation, in actual fact you are never far from other villages and beach areas. Argassi, Kalamaki and Laganas are close by, and Zakynthos town is only 12km along the coast .

You can explore the area on foot or bicycle, but the favourite modes of transport are quad bikes, particularly popular with Italians exploring the Vasilikos area from other nearby resorts.

There are a number of stunning beaches in this area, some of them home to the endangered Caretta-Caretta species of Loggerhead turtles .

While some beaches have just the bare essentials, others are fully geared for visitors with sunbeds, parasols, bars, cafes, restaurants, and water-sports.

If you’re booking a private self-catering apartment or house, especially in the more secluded areas, take the basics like water, squash, and snacks with you for when you arrive. It will allow you time to explore the nearby area for your local mini-market, bakeries, cafes, etc., for your daily essentials.

The whole Vasilikos area is one of tranquillity and peaceful relaxation , and that includes the evenings.

That’s not to say things are boring, far from it. There are plenty of places to find English, Spanish, Italian, and Chinese menus, but some of the best evenings are to be had in those small, friendly, family run tavernas.

Visitors are welcomed with open arms, and drinks begin to flow as mama prepares your choice of traditional Greek cuisine in the family kitchen. By the end of your stay you will be on first name terms with mine hosts, and receiving complimentary drinks, by way of appreciation.

If you fancy anywhere in Vasilikos for your stay in Zakynthos, you can choose from self-catering studios, apartments, houses, and mid-level hotels, to high-end luxury villas, spa resorts, and opulent hotels.

8. Kalamaki, a beach for tourists and loggerhead turtles

Kalamaki, a beach for tourists and loggerhead turtles

Just 3km from the international airport, and 6km from the island’s capital, Kalamaki is a long, golden sand beach that shelves gently into Laganas Bay, and is safe for younger children.

It is also a major nesting site for the endangered Loggerhead turtles . To ensure the turtles safety, areas of the beach are off-limits, or have various restrictions in place during the incubation and hatching season.

Although many water-sports are barred from Kalamaki beach for fear of upsetting the nesting turtles, you can hire a pedalo, and pedal out into the bay in search of these fascinating creatures swimming lazily in the ocean.

For the children, as well as learning about the turtles and playing on the beach, there are children’s playgrounds and water slides to keep them entertained.

The main street shopping area will have everything you require including supermarkets for day to day provisions, and shops selling souvenirs, knick-knacks, jewellery, fashionable and casual clothing, bags and leather goods, and a myriad other products.

If that’s not enough, the local bus service will get you to Zakynthos Town in around 30 minutes.

Although there are few local visitor attractions around Kalamaki except for the lush countryside, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy organised trips all around the island, and if you want to go farther afield, to some of the neighbouring islands.

You won’t find any nightclubs around Kalamaki, but the clubs at Laganas are just three-kilometres up the road . What you will find is an excellent selection of local and international restaurants, fast-food take-aways, and plenty of friendly tavernas.

Kalamaki is a growing and very popular resort area. If you’re considering it for your stay in Zakynthos, accommodations range from private self-catering studios and apartments to villas, and budget hotels to spa complexes.

9. Laganas, party capital of Zakynthos

Laganas, party capital of Zakynthos

If you prefer quiet, culture, and pleasant relaxation from your holiday destination, then Laganas is probably not the place for you.

Situated in the south of the island, Laganas has been the undisputed party destination of Zakynthos for a number of years, and shows no sign of wanting to relinquish its title.

Surprisingly, the beach is also one of the nesting grounds for endangered Loggerhead turtles, and comes under the administration of the National Maritime Park of Zakynthos.

At 9km long, Laganas is the island’s largest sandy beach . With its gentle shelving and calm waters, it is also popular with families with young children, as well as the young at heart, and 18-30 party people.

Because of the Loggerhead turtles, water-sports are banned , although you can try scuba diving, hire a pedalo to paddle round the bay, or small motor boat to explore further round the headland.

Other than that, the beach is very well equipped with sunbeds and parasols; and bars, restaurants, shops, and cafes spread along the front.

For something to get you away from the beach, there is a go-kart track on the main Laganas to Kalamaki road, horse riding either in the paddock or surrounding trails, five-a-side football pitches, mini-golf, and bowling. For the little ones there are playgrounds, trampolines, and waterslides.

In the main town centre, you can purchase everything you need from the many supermarkets, grocery stores, mini-marts, clothing and shoe shops, and jewellery and souvenir shops.

The majority of retail establishments on Zakynthos don’t siesta in the afternoon like many of their European counterparts, so you can enjoy a snack and coffee without worrying about everything closing for that three or four hour break.

Although Laganas starts to tick as the sun comes up, it is in the evening that the resort really comes to life.

With eateries of all types, you can fine-dine in some of the best international restaurants on the island, enjoy a traditional Greek meal, complete with plate smashing and Greek music, or grab a fast-food takeaway to eat on your way to the next bar.

Talking of bars, Laganas has over 100 , so if you just want a couple of notches over quiet, they are there. You’ve just got to find them. Most bars are geared up for lively and the party crowd.

You will find everything from karaoke bars to loud live music bars, and in the height of the summer, everywhere will be busy. Although the majority of bars stay open until the early hours, the hard-core party animals have still got some all night clubs to enjoy, until the sun rises on another day.

If Laganas sounds like your place to stay on Zakynthos, you can take your pick from hostels, self-catering apartment complexes, private apartments and villas, and budget, mid-range, and luxury hotels.

10. Keri, a great base for exploring

Keri, a great base for exploring

If you prefer quieter holidays where you can explore the local area and further afield at your own pace, Keri may be worth considering. To confuse the issue, there are two Keri’s, which are just a few minutes apart by car.

In the south-east of the island, one Keri is a small coastal village, with a tiny pebble beach, and the other, slightly inland from the coast, an attractive mountainside village, with some of the best seaward views on Zakynthos.

The beach at coastal Keri, although not the most picturesque of the Zakynthos beaches, is un-commercialised , with traditional Greek buildings and its own old-world charm.

The beach area has the most basic of amenities , with a small working fishing harbour at one end. You can hire pedalos to explore the bay, go scuba diving, or rent small motor boats to visit nearby beaches.

Dotted around the area and in the village, you will find local shops, taverns, many with Greek music and dancing, and fresh seafood restaurants, where you’ll be met with traditional Greek hospitality.

Mountainside Keri is a small village with less than 500 permanent residents. With its narrow windy streets, traditional stone cottages, and small village square, it is the epitome of Zakynthos before the advent of package holidays.

While visiting the village, you must visit the old monastery ruins and the lighthouse on the clifftop, for some of the best seascape photo-opportunities including fantastic sunsets.

Although there are some private rooms and apartments around mountainside Keri, and some hotels have recently been built, most visitors tend to book into coastal Keri for their stay in Zakynthos, where a larger choice of accommodation is available, and the nightlife a little more varied.

To explore more of the island, a hire car is pretty much a necessity. The local bus service is not the most reliable, with just two buses a day to the capital from coastal Keri, and none at weekends.

So there we have it. We hope you approve of our choices of where to stay in Zakynthos, and have a pleasant and enjoyable stay on the island.
