9 Group Travel Companies For Millennials That You Should Have On Your Radar

best travel companies for 30 year olds

It's not a secret that millennials love to travel . Whether it's for the Instagram fame, a chance to party, or just the genuine life experience of being in a new place and culture, it's true. In fact, according to research done by Contiki in 2018, the majority of millennials would give up sex for awhile in order to travel the world . Yeah, told you we love to travel! Most millennials in the study were also legitimately willing to temporarily give up Netflix, booze, and coffee in exchange for travel, too, and that's saying a lot. I mean... coffee?

But another interesting quirk in the millennial travel game is our apparent penchant for more adventure-based trips. Many young travelers reportedly opt for hostels or vacation rentals over hotels, making for a more authentic experience, and they are also more likely to seek off-the-beaten-path experiences.

Another thing millennial travelers are into? Group trips. "One of the latest trends in travel is the guided small-group excursion, tailored to give a pack of like-minded young people an immersive experience in a destination," explained Newsday . Group travel packages have a reputation for catering toward an older crowd, featuring trips that check off the boxes of every predictable touristy destination in town. But due to their interest in travel and the difficulty involved in aligning schedules and budgets with a group of friends, millennials have embraced and revitalized the group-of-solo-travelers trend, resulting in a surge of travel companies catering to this generation and organizing international trips specifically for young people.

Check out some of the travel companies for millennials that are curating epic, unique, and adventurous trips for groups of young solo travelers — and start saving up that PTO for a trip of your own.

Contiki (the company behind the sex/Netflix/booze/coffee stats above) curates worldwide trips exclusively for 18-35 year olds. Their motto is "travel with no regrets," which we can get behind — and they offer hundreds of different trips to destinations on nearly every continent. They also have a student discount available, for all you millennial scholars out there.

For The Love Of Travel

For The Love Of Travel is a boutique travel company that offers unique curated group trips for people ages 25-39. "[W]e embrace the idea of 'slow travel,'" the company explained on its site. "That is, having an authentic cultural experience that connects us with the soul of the destination and people we can relate to." Check out their incredible selection of experiences .

Under 30 Experiences

Under 30 Experiences is an adventure travel company aimed toward solo travelers who are — you guessed it — under the age of 30 (with a minimum travel age of 21). But they're not too strict about it: Most guests are apparently between 21-35, and the company says they usually serve "professionals, creative types, ambitious students, entrepreneurs, and motivated young people just figuring it out."

Aimed exclusively at young professionals, Travendly is a group travel company that thoughtfully puts together tribes of like-minded young people (usually in their mid-twenties to late thirties) for ultimate travel enjoyment. With more than a dozen curated trips to countries around the globe , there's something for everyone.

G Adventures' 18-To-Thirtysomethings

The collection of 18-To-Thirtysomethings tours offered by travel company G Adventures are described as"fast-paced and affordable adventures designed for young travellers." Their goal is to create exciting, adventure-based trips that young solo travelers can actually afford, so check out their offerings of trips to destinations around the world .

Travel company Topdeck organizes trips for 18 to 30-something year olds, and the company's passion is to "inspire young people through life-changing travel experiences." The group trips are made specifically for solo travelers who are looking for fun and adventures, and they offer trips all around Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Australia.

Group travel company Flash Pack curates unique and stylish trips for anyone in the millennial age bracket. Their trips are designed for solo travelers in their late 20s through 40s who are looking for an actually authentic and adventurous experience, and they specialize in high-quality, flexible, boutique accommodations.

Intrepid's 18 To 29s Adventures

This is for those of us on the younger side of the Millennial canon. Formerly known as Gecko, the 18 To 29s Adventures offered by group tour & travel company Intrepid . While they are strict with the age range, these tours are specially designed to be suited to young travelers and focus on local adventures, making their trips sustainability-minded.

EF Ultimate Break

Travel company EF Ultimate Break offers more than 65 different trips made for every travel style, and cater to solo travelers who are ages 18 to 29 for group trips. Unlike many other companies, flight costs are built into its trips, so once you pay (or get on a payment plan) you'll be all set to go, making it super easy for busy millennials.

Curation x  connection.

We run laid-back group trips for young professionals that are hassle-free (like a vacation) but have the adventure and cultural enrichment of solo travel.

Not only do we spend countless hours planning the best itineraries, we try to curate travel groups of similar individuals  to give everyone the best experience possible. We even send out a roster of everyone on the trip, so you know who your travel buddies will be.

Let us handle the logistics while you get lost in the beauty of travel - in the daring feats, the funny encounters, the mouthwatering cuisines, the novelty, and the unknown.

These are not perfectly pre-scripted, every minute scheduled "group tours." You won't find any matching hats or follow-the-flag group travel nonsense here. We don't script. We plan. So you don't have to. And then we have a really, really good time.

We invite you to join one of our trips, embrace the adventure, and make memories (and friends) that will last a lifetime.

Peru for Insiders

I had a fantastic time in Peru! Breathtakingly beautiful scenery, delicious food, great people, amazing activities and visits to some amazing Inca sites! What more could one ask for? My personal favourite moments of the trip where visiting colca canyon to view the condors soaring over spectacular views, the mini hike to get back and to top it off a afternoon of relax in thermal baths! And the icing on the cake of the whole trip....The Inca trail! Seeing Machu Picchu appear infront of us as the sun sets on the view point after a day hike! Truly unforgettable!! Thank you Indico

client

Peru is a big country packed with things to do, and this was a really thoughtful and well-crafted itinerary. I would never be able to organise this trip alone. Here you will eat lots of delicious food, get lots of fresh air, and make lots of incredible memories. I really appreciated the way we climbed elevation, and then dropped down in altitude from Lake Titicaca into Cusco thus ensuring we were well acclimatised for the Inca trail. This was quite an active holiday with some early mornings, but there were opportunities to take it easy. E.g. the thermal springs after our visit to Colca Canyon was just perfect. The Inca trail day-hike was incredible, and whilst you don't need to be an experienced hiker I'd recommend if you can doing a couple of hikes around 10km before your trip. Our guide had spare walking poles, which I'd never used before but I found very useful when climbing the steps. Staying with Gregorio and his family by Lake Titicaca was also extremely special - I loved having the opportunity to get to know them. If possible, I'd also recommend learning as much Spanish as you're able to. If like me you're also into knitting and/or crochet you will get a lot of excitement and inspiration as well :) Our guide was from Cusco, and so being shown this area by him was a great experience and we got some excellent recommendations. I loved learning about the history of the country throughout our trip. Overall I absolutely loved this Indico adventure, & I highly recommend it!

Best of Lisbon & Sintra

For me it was the first vacation of this kind, and I thought a lot beforehand whether this was really exactly what I wanted... I can only say so much: Because of the magnificent organization in advance, the individual program during the trip and the super lovely tour guide Lina you made the trip to one of my highlights of this year.

Jordan: From Desert to Sea

Jordan positively surprised me with its diversity and cultural wealth. The trip brought us closer to the country and its people. Every day had its own highlight. From the city, to the desert and to the sea, we were delighted every day and well informed by our guide about cultural aspects and backgrounds. I highly recommend the country and this trip!!!

Petra

Enjoyed the trip to Jordon very much, got to experience the culture, history and see the different landscape of desert and sea during the 8 days trip. Highly recommended

The Best Trips to Take in Your 30s

Your 30s are a magical time. You're a fully formed adult, with all the responsibility that adulthood entails, but you might also have disposable income to spend. Thirty-year-olds "are not looking to save money necessarily, they're looking to spend it quickly," says Andrea Malis, a travel advisor with Comeback Odyssey Travel in Tuscon, Arizona, of her millennial clients. And since so many are pressed for time, it isn't uncommon for these travelers to pack as much as they can into a fairly short time frame. "In four days, they'll do what a retiree would take three weeks to do," Malis says.

With help from a handful of seasoned travel experts, we chose the best trips to take in your 30s, whether you're looking to sample fine Malbec, hike Machu Picchu , or clock in some spa time. Each offers rich opportunities for seeing the world—and yourself—from a wholly new vantage point.

"You have the wine region, but then you have the active component—hiking and biking," Comeback Odyssey Travel's Malis says of Argentina's attractions . Lisa Lindblad, owner of Lisa Lindblad Travel Design in New York City, agrees the geographically diverse country is "very outdoorsy" with its snow-capped mountains and dreamy coastlines. From the café culture of Buenos Aires to Patagonia's rainforests and Mendoza's mouth-watering parillas, Argentina travel offers a little something for everyone—especially food-loving millennials with a fondness for nature.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

"Belize is really popular, even just for four nights," says Lynda Turley of Alpine Travel in Saratoga, California. That's especially true among newlyweds, who want "to stay somewhere close to the U.S. but want to get away for a last hurrah before they're a bit more tied down." She recommends "staying part of the time at the beach for excellent snorkeling and diving, and then part of the time in the rainforest for the culture and nightlife." The beach at Turtle Inn, part of the Coppola family of resorts , is a favorite thanks to its plethora of water activities, including zip lining.

"You've got your chance to see the Northern Lights in winter; in summer, you've got endless days," Lindblad says. Best of all, the country is highly accessible, making it ideal for time-crunched travelers. "It sits so close to the East Coast, you can go on your way to England. Or for a long weekend, spend two or three days there, and then carry on or come home," she says. Though no one really stays in Reykjavik, Lindblad says Hotel Rangá is an attractive option. There are many well-positioned lodges, since, after all, "logistics is everything in Iceland."

For foodies and hikers alike, Marjorie Shaw, founder of Insider's Italy, based in Rome, recommends the stunning Amalfi coast and Trentino-Alto Adige in the far north. Amalfi is best in winter, when it's low season, but if you insist on going in summer, you'll be rewarded with hikes and "excursions to Greek temples and villas destroyed by Mt. Vesuvius," she says. Late spring to early autumn is best for Trentino-Alto Adige, as it borders Austria and Switzerland and offers an enticing array of cultures. In the largely German Alto Adige, Shaw says, you'll find "small Latin communities scattered throughout."

"Japan is everybody's passion these days, particularly among 30-somethings," says Lindblad. "It's expensive, but if they have disposable income, there is really something for everybody: food, design, clothes and architecture." Malis agrees: "Japan has a booming culinary scene beyond sushi and teppanyaki , which should not be missed. Add a fish market, whiskey or sake tour, and your trip would be amazing." Health nuts will flock to Kyoto's ryokans , Lindblad says, especially Beniya Mukayu in artsy Kanazawa, while rookies will appreciate the ease of the country's transportation system .

New Zealand

"New Zealand is huge with the 30-year-old market and adventure market," says Turley of Alpine Travel. The locally grown food is almost fully sustainable—think fresh water salmon, green-lipped mussels, cheeses, and pit fruit—and the wine is superb. " Wellington is a super-fun college town and great jumping-off point for seeing The Lord of the Rings filming locations," Turley says, while visiting Waiheke Island "is like going to Tiburon or Sausalito for the day in California." Just a two-hour ferry from Auckland, Waiheke is perfect for day trips to wineries like Miro Vineyard or overnight stays at one of the many cute boutique hotels.

Chris Marinaccio/Travel + Leisure

"Peru is a really achievable destination for somebody in their 30s," Malis says, because the airfare is reasonable. There's the allure of fulfilling a bucket list item (the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu ), and since millennials like to be rewarded for their efforts, they can chow down post-hike at one of the fancy Relais & Chateaux properties. Speaking of hiking, it doesn't get much better than the historic Plaza de Armas in Cusco, Sacsayhuamán, the "Stonehenge of the Andes," or the mother of all Inca trails, Machu Picchu.

" Portugal is a great value, especially with the dollar being so strong," says Turley, who's worked with many clients in their 30s. "It's half the price of Spain to start out with," and it fits the millennial bill thanks to its serious wine culture. "If they're not spending a lot of money in Lisbon , they can blow a little in the Duoro Valley in the north," the world's first designated wine region, Lindblad says. Dropping a few euros on Six Senses , a luxurious 19th-century manor house overlooking the vine-covered hills, isn't a bad idea either.

South Africa

Going back to the idea of accomplishing a lot in a short time frame, Malis says " South Africa is an amazing place for people to go visit," as "you have the ocean experience, where you can shark dive" and the ability to enjoy a couple of nights in the Cape Winelands , the country's mountainous answer to Napa Valley. For history buffs, Johannesburg offers themed walking tours to unlock the city's history and get a bit closer to Nelson Mandela, while the recent opening of Four Seasons Westcliff will suit a luxury-minded crowd in need of a spa treatment after a safari.

For those in search of tropical climates free from the threat of Zika, the largest island in French Polynesia is a wonderful option, Turley says. Of course, whether you go will depend on your budget since airfare doesn't come cheap. If you can swing it, Turley highly recommends The Brando resort, an eco-friendly oasis tucked 45 minutes away on the private island of Tetiaroa. "It used to belong to Marlon Brando, and it's been opened as a resort," she explains. "And again, it's got everything: excellent food and wine, all included; all your wellness is there."

South America's buzzy hotspot is super accessible, Lindblad says, especially for those coming east from Buenos Aires. From there, a roughly four-hour ferry-and-bus ride gets you to Montevideo, where you can enjoy a relaxing stroll on the white-sand beaches; visit Ciudad Vija, the city's oldest neighborhood; or hit one of the many bars and nightclubs, where tango performances are a lively tradition. Montevideo is best in October, when the temperatures ease up and average rainfall takes a nosedive. But perhaps the most alluring aspect, Lindblad says, is that you won't need a tour guide.

Is it worth going on a group tour as a young solo/single traveler?

As with all types of travel, there are pros and cons to going with a tour company, especially with companies specialized in tours for young travelers since many include lots of partying and going out and daily bonding with the same group. So, it’s possible that this isn’t the right choice for you.

(PS: still a young adult traveler who is interested in group tours but not the party aspect of them? See tour companies # 3 & #4 below or see my article with the 5 Best Small Group Tour Companies for International Travel  for  some more options)

So it’s important to know some things beforehand about this type of trip so you can decide for yourself if it’s your style or not.

5 Best Tour Companies for Young Solo/Single Travelers

Sextiki

Contiki is the most well-known tour company for young travelers worldwide. It’s been around since 1962, so its name carries quite a lot of weight.

But don’t worry if this sounds a bit intense for you…the options below are a bit more “calm.”

So, as you can imagine,  most of Contiki’s excursions involve lots of partying and going out with “pub crawl” kind of nights. And since there’s plenty of cool stories online of young travelers who traveled and would travel again with Contiki, it must be one of the best companies available if this is the type of travel you’re looking for.

Contiki has more than 328 distinct tours for many destinations across the 6 continents. According to their website, 55% of travelers who chose Contiki are single and are traveling alone, but the trips can also accommodate groups of friends and couples.

One thing to keep in mind is that the groups are usually quite big, around 30 people, and the main form of travel is the company’s coach bus.

Finally, their tours have a bit of everything: physical activities , exploration of local culture and food, and visits to ethical and sustainable organizations and projects in your destination. In other words, you are capable of a journey full of different attractions, sounds, and experiences!

Topdeck is a company that offers“epic trips and tours for young adventurers aged 18-39.”With 40 years of experience, alongside Contiki, Topdeck is one of the most well-known companies in terms of group travel for young solo/single travelers.

Their trips are divided into several categories:

  • Hotel tours: designed for couples or singles who want to travel a bit more comfortably through Europe, the U.S., Canada, or Asia. All hotels have, at least, 3 stars and the excursions give you a lot of free time to relax or explore on your own.
  • Explorer trips: these are shorter trips, between 6 days and 3 weeks, with just one country for those who want to explore local culture more deeply. The groups are small and accommodation is in shared or private hotel rooms.
  • Hostel plus trip:  low-cost tours with accommodation in hostels , cabins, or vans and with itineraries with multiple destinations/countries.
  • Camping trips: these trips are the cheapest way to travel through Europe with Topdeck. The accommodation is camping with private chefs cooking meals daily. The bunks are for two people and include mattresses.
  • Sailing trips: these trips are an awesome option for anyone who dreams of sailing the world but doesn’t have an idea of where to start. Accommodation is within a sailboat in double, triple, or quadruple rooms with meals included.
  • Festivals and events: these tours are specifically for events like Oktoberfest or the Sziget festival (in Hungary) and other festivals in the United States, Canada, and Europe .
  • Ski trips: these trips are perfect for anyone who loves snow and skiing . With destinations in Canada, New Zealand, Bulgaria, and Japan . Accommodation is in private or shared hotel rooms.
  • Gap year: this trip is made for young travelers 17-18 who want to travel in Europe after graduating high school. It’s a great idea for anyone who wants to travel on their own without freaking their parents out. Accommodation is in hostels and the destinations usually include 8-10 countries.

Created in 1990, G Adventures was born with the idea of offering authentic adventures responsibly and sustainably. Their excursions have reasonable prices and cover all the continents, including Antarctica!

The groups are small and the itineraries are designed so you have time to explore on your own. The trips are themed and have different options for all ages, including a category for young travelers aged 18-39.

The trips in this category are faster-paced and designed for young travelers. In other words, you explore during the day and stay up at night. Their motto for these excursions is “live fast now.” So, their trips are usually longer than the others and offer more activities.

Plus, this category of travel groups is a bit more affordable with accommodation in hostels and a few meals included to guarantee a cheaper price. You can read more about these trips here .

Or, just click in the link above, go to G Adventures main page, click “Travel Styles” and select “18-to-Thirtysomethings!”

It’s worth remembering that these trips follow the basic principles of G Adventures: small groups and free time. Plus, the trips are done in a responsible and sustainable way, prioritizing small businesses and the welfare of animals, children, and indigenous communities.

And finally, like Intrepid, G Adventures is a partner of Planeterra, an NGO dedicated to ensuring that communities touched by tourism benefit from it, rather than be exploited by it. The organization helps to empower local populations, preserve their cultures, and create support systems by managing 50 organizations across the 7 continents with the aim of benefiting women, at-risk youth, and indigenous and rural communities. You can read more about Planeterra here .

Best tour groups

Intrepid is considered by many to be one of the best options for those who want to travel as part of an excursion with small, adventure-focused groups .

All trips offered by Intrepid are sustainable, and because of this Intrepid is known and respected as the global leader in sustainable travel.

The company has zeroed its carbon footprint and supports the Intrepid Foundation, a foundation that finances the planting of trees worldwide creates jobs and local education, and helps the world achieve 8 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. You can read more about the foundation at https://www.theintrepidfoundation.org/.

Intrepid has many types of trips for all budgets and personalities. That said, the company prides itself in organizing small groups of up to 10 people. This is because Intrepid believes that this is the maximum number of people that still allows a true connection with locals without you simply feeling like just a face in the group. The trips are also always designed to give you some time to explore on your own.

The trips made for young travelers aged 18-29 (called their “18 to 29s” trips) are designed specifically for the new generation of socially-conscious explorers. In other words, they were created for travelers who want to discover new places and cultures, make new friends , and also make a difference in the world.

There are many destinations and the cost of the trips are relatively low given that they are designed for young travelers. You can see all of Intrepid’s tour options here .

Unlike the other companies mentioned above, Trek American only offers excursions for North and Central America. And in general their tours are quite small, just 13 people, with the exception of their “plus” tours of up to 30 people.

Trek America is also quite well-known and has been running since 1972. Like Contiki, the tours are exclusively for young travelers aged 18-38 and include itineraries of 3 days to 3 months.

The reputation of Trek America is that they offer experiences which change your life with a balance between visiting big cities, national parks, and other activities that explore the most incredible places in North and Central America.

And, unlike Contiki, Trek America trips don’t include the “pub crawl” culture. So if you are a young traveler who is more interested in exploring and making new experiences instead of partying, Trek America might be good for you.

They have 3 types of tours:

  • Original tours: small group tours with the aim of having an authentic “ road trip ,” with cheap accommodation that includes hostels, camping, and budget hotels. The groups have 10-13 people, which gives you a bit more flexibility in the itinerary.
  • Plus tours: offered just to explore North America, these tours offer more comfort, primarily when it comes to accommodation, and you’ll stay in hotels, eco resorts, and apartments. Plus, breakfast is included as is more activities than the original tours. The only “con” is that the groups are usually bigger (up to 30 people).
  • BOLT tours: offered exclusively for Central America with a combination of private transportation and local transportation. The groups are 12-18 people with accommodation in hotels and with a bit more flexibility, meaning the most famous tourist spots will be included, but you’ll still have lots of free time to explore on your own.

Solo Travel In Your 30s – here’s 5 alternatives to staying home

by Steven Dillon | Apr 26, 2019

best travel companies for 30 year olds

This post was written by Steve Dillon, founder of   Other Way Round , a group travel company specialising in adventure trips for 25-45 year olds. He’s passionate about encouraging fellow 30 somethings to give solo travel a try, and he shares 5 ways to go about it.

(or “vacations” for my North American friends).

If you’re anything like most people it’s what gets you through the day-to-day grind.

Looking forward to that next trip – the opportunity to relax, to disconnect, to experience something completely different.

It doesn’t get much better.

“Where are you going this year”?

If you would have asked me that when I was in my 20s I would have reeled off a list of upcoming trips with friends.

There was always something going on and the main challenge was finding the cash to get involved.

Group of 30 something solo travellers

But the first time it happened to me I had just turned 30…

I had resigned from my job and had managed to wangle a 1 week break before starting my next role.

I was in need of a break.

Desperate actually .

And I knew I would be useless at my next company without recharging my batteries first.

The problem – I couldn’t find anyone to go with.

At such short notice neither my girlfriend or friends could get the time from work and I was faced with the daunting prospect:

GO ALONE, OR DON’T GO AT ALL.

Solo travel trip in my 30s

Solo Travel in My 30s

As I’ve progressed through my 30s I’ve realised that this was just the start of things to come.

People get married, have kids, get saddled with huge mortgages.

It becomes near impossible to align schedules and finances with those closest friends.

If this sounds all too familiar, the good news is that you are not alone.

It is way more common than you think and many of us are facing the same challenge.

So what do you do?

You could decide to stay home and miss out (and sadly many people do).

But honestly, in this day and age it’s SO unnecessary.

“Solo Travel” is absolutely booming, especially for people in their 30s, and there are endless possibilities out there.

In this post I’m going to share with you 5 alternatives to staying home if you find yourself in a similar situation.

(See also:   Group Holidays for Solos Over 30 )

Solo travel with 30 something tour group

1. Hardcore Solo Travel

By this I mean really go all in and fully embrace the solo aspect of “solo travel”.

Plan out your own trip in full, based entirely on what YOU want to do.

There are SO MANY resources available online to help.

(some good places to start are Nomadic Matt , Adventurous Kate , Lonely Planet , Conde Nast Traveler but really if you just type your destination into Google you’ll find there’s a ridiculous wealth of information available).

Go where you want, when you want.

Don’t worry about pleasing anyone else.

Enjoy the time alone to think, get perspective on life, and renew your sense of purpose (sounds a bit cheesy I know, but it often happens).

Embrace the flexibility and freedom that comes with this option and after a while you may just wonder why you’ve never done it before.

It’s definitely character building stuff and you will likely emerge from such a trip with a new found level of resilience and independence which you can carry forth on into your daily life.

2. The Hybrid Approach to Travelling Alone

This combines the best of both worlds.

Again, plan your trip independently – book your own flights, accommodation, plan a rough itinerary etc… but put yourself in places where you are likely to meet other people along the way.

You could stay at a hostel where there’s likely to be a bunch of other travellers in their 30s sharing a similar mindset.

You could also book yourself onto day tours so you still get to go visit places with other people, but leave plenty of ‘alone time’ with the flexibility to venture off and do your own thing.

30 somethings singles holiday

Or you could even hook yourself up with a local and really get to know the place you’re visiting on a deeper level.

Platforms like Couchsurfing and Airbnb Experiences are great for connecting you with such locals for a more ‘authentic experience’.

The great thing with this approach is that you don’t have to plan too much in advance.

Most Hostels / Hotels / Airbnbs will have relationships with the local tour operators and you can typically just land, see what’s available and book something at the last minute.

3. Join an Online Travel Group

The internet is full of online communities (or travel groups) specifically catering to people in this very position – single people looking to travel solo.

They typically provide an abundance of useful information, in-depth resources and helpful tips for those thinking to travel alone.

And better still, some even organise trips which members can join.

Some great examples of such groups are:-

  • Solo Travel Society
  • Girls Gone International
  • Travelettes
  • Girls Love Travel

(these groups all also have huge social media followings)

Go search for something in your particular area of interest and you’re bound to find something that resonates with you.

(there are many which will specialise in bringing together singles in their 30s)

female solo travel in your 30s

4. Get Social

This is a bit more of a long game with regard to solo travel but in my opinion it’s one of the absolute best things you can do.

Here it is…

JOIN A SOCIAL CLUB IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY

If you’re struggling to find friends to go on holiday with then chances are you’re also facing a similar challenge in your day-to-day life (and we all need someone to go grab a beer with on the weekend).

And yet the perfect solution is available to most of us within our local communities which typically have ‘social clubs’ for almost every interest out there.

Solo trip in my 30s hiking in Colombia

For example, in recent years I’ve been a member of the following clubs:-

  • RBS Football (London – football team)
  • One Element (London – outdoor fitness club)
  • Y Tri (Washington DC – triathlon club)
  • La Ruta Outdoor (Medellin – hiking club)

(yeah, I’ve gotten around a little)!

And without exception, in each of these communities I have met great friends, found people to hang out with on weekends and – most relevant to this blog – ended up going on HOLIDAY with other solo travellers from the group.

Sometimes it was part of an organised group trip (most social clubs do them) and other times just directly with friends I have met through these clubs.

And although these particular groups lean more towards the active side, you can bet there’s a group somewhere that covers you own personal area of interest whether that be music, dance, languages or whatever.

Go check out Meetup which is a great resource for finding such groups.

5. Go With a Tour Group

Last but not least is the option to join a tour group.

Now, I know that some people have the image of tour groups being a bit stuffy or rigid but these days there are definitely some WAY more modern versions out there.

(in fact check out this blog: Debunking 9 Myths About Small Group Tours )

Going back to the story I talked about in the intro – where none of my friends were available to holiday with me – I ended up ‘traveling solo’ for a week of ‘Spanish and Surf’ in Fuerteventura.

It was a fantastic trip, I met a bunch of fun people, and I got that much needed time to disconnect.

sailing during singles holiday for 30 somethings

Fast forward a couple of years and I joined another tour group called Medsailors for a week of ‘Sun and Sailing’ in Croatia (it was so good I went with them again to Greece the following year)!

Inspired so much by these awesome trips I then went on to create my very own tour company – Other Way Round – specialising in group tours for 30 and 40 somethings solo travellers.

These days there are tour groups for absolutely everything .

Whether you’re into yoga , skiing , meditation, dancing, hiking, biking, literature, museums, adventure or just want to party for two weeks – there’s an option out there for you.

Just type your interest and desired destination into Google and you’ll be spoilt with a bucket load of choices.

The “Right Way” to Do Travelling Solo in Your 30s

SPOILER ALERT – there is no “right way” to do solo travel in your 30s.

There is no one size fits all.

For some people the thought of Option 1 (Hardcore Solo Travel) will fill them with dread while for others it will sound like paradise.

At the other end of the scale I know people who could think of nothing worse than going on a 2 week group tour with a bunch of “strangers” while for others it’s what they enjoy most.

It all comes down to what you’re more comfortable with as an individual and what better suits your personality.

Solo travellers in their 30s chatting in Colombia

I tend to lean more towards Option 4 (Social Clubs) and Option 5 (Tour groups).

I like meeting new people and sharing experiences together.

It always takes me a bit of time to get to know new people so I prefer spending a longer period with the same group rather than meeting new people every day.

I like the bond it creates within the group and usually find that on such trips the banter is the best part.

But that’s just me and everyone is different.

The most important takeaway here is that if you’re a solo traveller in your 30s there’s definitely an option out there for you. There’s no need to miss out.

With that in mind…

Hiking in Colombia with other solo travellers 30 years old

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE – Don’t Miss Out !

If I can get only one thin g across in this blog it is to tell you not to hold yourself back.

I’m extremely passionate about this subject because I see so many single travellers in their 30s missing out because they don’t take that initial first step .

Yes, it can be tricky.

Often awkward.

Eating at a restaurant alone.

Trying to make friends in a hostel when it feels like everyone else is travelling together.

Meeting up with a new tour group or social group for the first time when you don’t know anyone.

But if you push yourself through those initial moments of pain (torture for some I know) then you will open yourself up to a whole new world of possibilities.

Go on, give it a try!

What people love about italy tours for young adults.

The accommodation was a bit too small but wasn’t as big a deal as we were out for most of the day. Overall, it was an amazing experience and a great way to make new friends!
Amazing experience. All of the tour guides I had (Ned, Meaghan, Lorenzo and Amy) were so kind, helpful, knowledgable and FUN!!) I can’t thank them enough for making my first trip to Italy amazing. There were so many beautiful sights to see, delicious food and new friendships made. Thank you for the trip of a life time. Melissa C
