Best Tourist Sim Cards in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2024

bh telecom tourist 2

If you’re planning a trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina, having a sim card is essential for convenient navigation and connectivity. With internet access on your phone, you can easily explore new cities, discover the finest dining establishments, find your way to your accommodation, book taxis, and share memorable moments with your loved ones.

While roaming is an option, the accumulating fees for international travel can become quite pricey. Therefore, we highly recommend either opting for an eSim or acquiring a local sim card to enjoy local phone rates. Luckily, obtaining either of these options in Bosnia and Herzegovina is incredibly simple.

This comprehensive guide will provide you with all the necessary information, including current prices and suggestions on the best sim card option for your needs.

Table of Contents

Best sim card in bosnia and herzegovina for tourists.

The best sim card in Bosnia & Herzegovina is the tourist sim card package by BH Telecom . BH Telecom is the largest mobile network operator in the country and offers the most extensive and reliable mobile network. Their plans are also the most competitively priced and are easy to acquire.

For most travellers I recommend the Tourist 1 Prepaid sim card which includes 15GB data + 5GB bonus data valid for 10 days. Perfect if you’re just visiting Mostar and Sarajevo, you won’t run out of data. If you’re spending longer travelling around Bosnia & Herzegovina then you can instead purchase the Tourist 2 prepaid sim card for 40 BAM which includes 30GB of data valid for 30 days.

If you’re exploring the wider Balkan region then it gets a bit messy as sometimes mobile network operators work across Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Albania. One option if you’re starting your trip in Bosnia & Herzegovina would be to ask at each of the stores if their sim cards work in other Balkan countries. For example. M:tel offers a 20GB for 30 days package which includes 4GB of data in the Western Balkans. Or, if you’re starting in Albania, I’d recommend the Vodafone prepaid sim cards which include data in all the countries above.

An even easier option is to just purchase an Airalo Bosnia & Herzegovina eSim online. $13 USD (about 23 BAM) will get you 5GB data and it saves you the hassle of having to visit a store and register with your passport.

Bosnia and Herzegovina Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in Bosnia and Herzegovina costs 20 BAM in April 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Bosnia and Herzegovina will cost between $4.50 USD and $32 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina which includes 5GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $13 USD.

Bosnia and Herzegovina Sim Card Providers

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, there are three main SIM card providers catering to the telecommunications needs of its citizens. M:tel Bosnia and Herzegovina is another prominent provider, established in 1998. It provides mobile and fixed telephony services, internet, and television services. M:tel is known for its competitive pricing and extensive coverage, making it a popular choice among users.

HT Eronet, formerly known as HT Mostar, is an important player in the telecommunications market as well. Founded in 1994, it offers mobile and fixed telephony, internet, and television services to its customers.

How to Get a Sim Card in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Identify mobile providers: BH Telecom, M:tel Bosnia and Herzegovina and HT Eronet are your best options in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Bosnia and Herzegovina

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Bosnia and Herzegovina at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Bosnia and Herzegovina then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Bosnia and Herzegovina have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as BH Telecom, M:tel Bosnia and Herzegovina and HT Eronet. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Bosnia and Herzegovina are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Bosnia and Herzegovina with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

The better option is to purchase an eSim online. We’ve written more on that below!

Bosnia and Herzegovina eSim

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Airalo Bosnia and Herzegovina eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

In order to get set up with an Airalo eSim , all you need to do is visit Airalo here and purchase the eSim online (the $13 USD plan is suitable for most travellers). Once you’ve purchased the sim card Airalo will email you instructions and a QR code. Following these instructions should take just a couple of minutes, then you’ll have a sim card in Bosnia and Herzegovina without having to venture outside.

Airalo Bosnia and Herzegovina

Our preferred eSim provider in Bosnia and Herzegovina is Airalo . We used them, alongside a local sim card on another device, for our most recent trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina and found the service to be equal to the local sim card but without the hassle of acquiring a sim card in a store.

Airalo’s Bosnia and Herzegovina eSim uses the Eronet (HT Mobile) network to provide data and connect users to the internet. You can expect very good coverage and reliability with the Eronet (HT Mobile) networknetwork as they are amongst the best mobile internet operators in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Here are the plans and prices for Airalo’s Bosnia and Herzegovina eSim:

1GB data valid for 7 days – Price: $4.50 USD 2GB data valid for 15 days – Price: $7 USD 3GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $9.50 USD 5GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $13 USD 10GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $21 USD 20GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $32 USD

For most travellers we recommend the 5GB data plan for $13 USD which is valid for 30 days. Some travellers may prefer a larger plan, whilst travellers visiting for just a couple of days may be fine with a smaller plan.

Holafly Bosnia and Herzegovina

An alternative eSim provider we can recommend is Holafly.

Holafly’s eSim is a suitable option for travellers who require large amounts of data, such as digital nomads and people who work online while they travel. All of Holafly’s Bosnia and Herzegovina eSims offer unlimited data.

Holafly’s Bosnia and Herzegovina eSim uses the Telecomnetwork to provide data and connect users to the internet. This network will provide reliable speeds and coverage while in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Here are the plans and prices for Holafly’s Bosnia and Herzegovina eSim:

6GB data valid for 15 days – Price: $44 USD

What is an eSim?

An eSIM, also known as an embedded SIM, is a digital SIM card that is permanently installed within a device like a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch. Unlike traditional SIM cards, eSIMs do not require physical insertion or removal of a card.

Instead, the eSIM is integrated into the device’s hardware and can be remotely activated and programmed by a mobile network operator. This allows users to switch between different mobile networks or plans without needing to physically swap SIM cards.

This technology offers convenience, flexibility, and ease of use, particularly for travelers or those who frequently switch between mobile networks or travel internationally. Users no longer need to purchase and insert physical SIM cards, which makes managing multiple mobile connections on a single device more convenient.

To activate an eSIM, users can either scan a QR code provided by their mobile network operator or manually enter the activation details. Once activated, the device can connect to the selected mobile network and access voice, data, and messaging services similar to using a physical SIM card.

Why Use an eSim?

There are numerous advantages to using an eSIM.

Firstly, it offers convenience as there is no need to physically insert or remove a SIM card when switching networks or plans. This is especially beneficial for frequent travelers.

Secondly, eSIM allows for dual SIM functionality, allowing users to have two active mobile numbers on one device. This is useful for separating personal and work numbers or managing multiple phone lines.

Additionally, eSIMs save space within the device as they are embedded, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card slot. This allows manufacturers to make smaller devices or use the extra space for other components.

Moreover, eSIMs enable remote provisioning, meaning mobile plans can be activated and managed over the air without requiring a physical SIM card or a visit to a store. This offers greater flexibility and convenience for managing mobile connectivity.

Lastly, using an eSIM-compatible device ensures future-proofing, as more mobile networks and service providers are offering support for eSIMs. This allows users to take advantage of new services and offerings as they become available.

In summary, eSIM technology provides flexibility, convenience, and future-proofing for mobile connectivity, making it an attractive option for many users.

eSim Supported Phones

eSIM technology is becoming increasingly popular and is supported by a growing number of smartphones and other devices. Here are some examples of eSIM-compatible phones:

Apple iPhone series (iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, etc.): Apple was one of the early adopters of eSIM technology and offers support for eSIM on various iPhone models.

Google Pixel series (Pixel 3, Pixel 4, Pixel 5, etc.): Google’s Pixel smartphones also support eSIM functionality, allowing users to activate and use eSIMs.

Samsung Galaxy series (Galaxy S22, Galaxy Note 20, etc.): Many of Samsung’s flagship devices now come with eSIM support, enabling users to utilize eSIM technology.

OnePlus devices (OnePlus 7, OnePlus 8, etc.): OnePlus has included eSIM support in some of its smartphone models, offering users the flexibility of using eSIMs.

Motorola Razr (2020): The latest iteration of the iconic Motorola Razr features eSIM compatibility, enabling users to use eSIMs for cellular connectivity.

These are just a few examples, and the list of eSIM-compatible phones continues to expand as more manufacturers embrace this technology. There’s a very strong chance your phone supports eSims so if you’re unsure we recommend looking it up on our list of eSim supported phones .

How to Use an eSim

Using an eSim is new for many travellers, however, the good news is it’s surprisingly easy to get set up – even for the technologically challenged!

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Obtain an eSIM: There are multiple ways to acquire an eSIM. You can purchase an eSIM online from a provider like Airalo (which we recommend) or directly from a mobile network operator. Some devices also allow you to scan a QR code provided by your carrier to download the eSIM profile.

Activate the eSIM: Your eSim provider will send you instructions to activate the sim. This will usually involve scanning a QR code, entering an activation code, or downloading the eSIM profile directly onto your device.

Set up the eSIM: Once activated, your device will guide you through the eSIM setup process. This typically involves selecting the eSIM as your preferred mobile plan, configuring settings like data roaming, and entering any necessary authentication details.

Enjoy the Connection: Once the eSIM is set up, you can use it as you would with a physical SIM card. Make calls, send messages, browse the internet, and use data services as needed. You can also switch between eSIM profiles if you have multiple eSIMs installed on your device.

Bosnia SIM Cards: Everything You Need To Know

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Apr 22, 2024 | Europe , SIM Cards , Travel Tips

Visiting Bosnia soon? Make sure to know what to expect when it comes to purchasing a Bosnia SIM card .

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Bosnia in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

That said, if you’re traveling to other countries in Europe, you should be able to use the same SIM card because most SIM card providers also offer coverage in other European countries.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Bosnia. If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call a cab, or translate Bosnian – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Bosnia.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, Europe

Best SIM Cards In Bosnia

If you’re traveling in Bosnia, we recommend using a SIM card from BH Telecom, HT Eronet, M:tel, or Airalo. (I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!)

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Europe , you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other European countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Bosnia

You can either buy a Europe prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase a European prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by BH Telecom, HT Eronet, and M:tel.

Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Europe

BH Telecom SIM Cards

BH Telecom offers several different tourist plans:

  • 15 GB data, valid for 10 days, BAM 20 ($11.03)
  • 30 GB data, valid for 30 days, BAM 40 ($22.06)
  • 100 GB data, valid for 15 days, BAM 100 ($55.15)

HT Eronet SIM Cards

HT Eronet has 2 different prepaid plans available for tourists

  • 10 GB data, valid for 1 day, BAM 3 ($1.65)
  • 20 GB data, valid for 7 days, BAM 20 ($11.03)

M:tel SIM Cards

M:tel has 3 different prepaid plans available for tourists

  • 2 GB data, valid for 1 day, BAM 2 ($1.10)
  • 3 GB data, valid for 3 days, BAM 3 ($1.65)
  • 5 GB data, valid for 5 days, BAM 4.50 ($2.48)

Overall, we think BH Telecom is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person. That said, any would do if you can’t find their store!

How To Buy A Bosnia Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, Orange Holiday World SIM works in more than 100+ countries and gives you up to 10 GB of data for 14 days. Bosnia is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and make sure the countries you plan on visiting are listed.

Browse your options on Amazon

Finally, the last option is to buy an eSIM card for Bosnia.

How To Buy An eSIM Card For Bosnia

eSIM is a new concept that allows you to have a virtual SIM card inside your phone. If your mobile phone supports eSIM cards – it’s definitely one of the best options to get data in Bosnia.

Curious? Learn more about eSIM for travelers on esimroamers.com .

I started using eSIM as soon as my mobile phone supported it. And I first tried it when visiting my family in Canada. To buy eSIMs, I usually use Airalo .

Keep reading to learn more about the best eSIMs in Bosnia.

Airalo Bosnia

If you want to buy an eSIM for Bosnia, you could purchase one on Airalo . This website offers many eSIM cards worldwide and special plans for Europe and Bosnia.

I’ve been using Airalo in Europe for several months, and it works fine.

Here are the options available :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $4.50
  • 2 GB, valid for 15 days for $7
  • 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $9.50
  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $13
  • 10 GB, valid for 30 days for $21
  • 20 GB, valid for 30 days for $32

Bosnia Airalo eSIM plan

Alternatively, if you’re traveling in other countries too, you can try Discover Global, which offers coverage in 124 countries, including Bosnia.

Here’s an overview of the options available on Discover Global :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $9
  • 2 GB, valid for 15 days for $17
  • 3 GB, valid for 15 days for $24
  • 5 GB, valid for 60 days for $35
  • 10 GB, valid for 180 days for $59
  • 20 GB, valid for 365 days for $69

Airalo Discover esim global

Now, one important thing to note about Airalo is that you’ll need to keep an eye out for the provider in each country. Suppose you ever have trouble connecting to the Internet during your trip.

In that case, it might be because you’re connecting automatically to networks and need to select a network manually instead.

When you purchase the eSIM, you’ll get access to the list of networks supported in each country.

Go to Airalo

Holafly Bosnia

Alternatively, you could look at your options on Holafly . You can read our Holafly review to learn more about this eSIM store. I’ve also tried this eSIM provider in Europe, and it worked fine.

They offer the following plan for Bosnia:

  • Unlimited data, valid for 5 days for $27
  • Unlimited data, valid for 7 days for $34
  • Unlimited data, valid for 10 days for $37
  • Unlimited data, valid for 15 days for $47
  • Unlimited data, valid for 20 days for $54

Final Thoughts On SIM Cards In Bosnia

As you can see, getting a prepaid SIM card in Bosnia or even an eSIM for your travels in Bosnia is pretty easy.

You’ll even be able to stay connected wherever you go in Europe without changing your SIM card, especially if you purchase a European SIM card .

I believe the eSIM card is the most convenient way to get data in Bosnia if you wish to have data upon your arrival. This way, you won’t need to go to a store to buy a SIM card.

Obviously, you need to make sure your mobile phone supports eSIM first.

Mobile Internet and communication in Bosnia and Herzegovina for tourists: SIM cards and prices

In Bosnia and Herzegovina three different network operators are active:

  • m:tel  (by Telekom Srpske)
  • HT  Eronet  (by HT Mostar)

This offer is supplemented by MVNOs attached to the providers like  haloo  and  Go! free.  Generally BH Telecom is market leader with slightly more than 40%, m:tel has a little less than 40% and the remainig 20% are on Eronet. 99% of the population are covered by 2G networks, 95% by 3G networks and 4G has only just begun and already reaches more than 80% in 2021.

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s telecom’s regulator  Regulatorna agencija za komunikacije ( RAK) has issued 4G licences to the nation’s trio of mobile network operators (MNOs) in April 2019. The concessions are valid for 15 years and oblige the licence holders to begin offering commercial 4G services within one month of the award. The cellcos are also required to ensure the networks covers 90% of the country’s territory within five years of the award.

In 2019/20 4G/LTE started as one of the last countries in Europe on all three networks. The carriers are free to use bands on 800, 900, 1800 and 2100 MHz (B1, B3, B8 or B20). 5G hasn’t started yet. Over the years different MVNOs started on all three networks, but only haloo on Eronet network survived.

SIM cards don’t require registration in Bosnia and Herzegovina and remain anonymous. You can buy them in many stores, such as post offices, grocery stores, newsstands, service stations, and convenience stores for 4-5 KM. It’s also possible to buy SIM cards at Sarajevo International Airport (Međunarodni Aerodrom Sarajevo). You can top up credit in many local stores or online on the pages of the provider.

Be aware that Bosnia and Herzegovina is  neither  part of the EU, nor of the wider EEA, where since 2017 new international roaming rules have been enforced. So roaming rates using EU/EEA-issued SIM cards are  not  regulated and can therefore be much higher. Better use a local or regional SIM card than an EU SIM.

Instead, from July 2021 Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia have become a single roaming area similar to EU rules. From now on you can roam without surcharges in the Western Balkans using a SIM card from these countries, but not in the EU.

bh telecom tourist 2

BH Telecom is the leading provider in the country with a 45% share in 2015. 2G is on 900 and 1800 MHz, 3G on 2100 and 900 MHz. First trials with 4G/LTE started in 2014 and the commercial launch was in April 2019. The operator has already covered more than 2/3 of the population.

Ultra is the name of their prepaid product. Their Ultra Start Paket is available in their shops  (locator ) and other outlets like post offices, kiosk and book shops for 5 KM. New customers receive a 1 GB mobile internet traffic bonus (valid for 7 days) and 3 KM credit (valid for 30 days and only for SMS and calls). Different Ultra plans are offered and special tourist plans are sold.

Top-ups are available as electronic voucher from 5 KM or as electronic top-up from 2 KM. Validity depends on top-up amount and is 7-180 days. Check credit with *110#, initial balance for new cards however shows this way: *106*0*1# to check bonus for KM and *106*1*1# to check bonus for MB.

Data feature packages

Default internet is billed with 0.50 KM per MB. These data packages called ‘Instant Buy & Surf’ for high speeds up to 3.6 MBit/s and can be activated on the usual Ultra cards in these varieties:

To get to know your data balance, type *108*?*1# where ? stands for the size 1-5 according to activation code.

Alternatively, you can also activate a digressive rate by *105*0*6# and deactivate by *105*0*7#:

  • < 25 MB: 0.50 KM per MB
  • 25 MB – 100 MB: 0.40 KM per MB
  • 100 MB – 250 MB: 0.30 KM per MB
  • 250 MB – 500 MB: 0.20 KM per MB
  • > 500 MB: 0.10 KM per MB

Data-only SIM

Their data-only SIM card is called Ultra Internet for 10 KM. It doesn’t contain voice, only SMS. Ultra Internet has an initial credit of 3 KM for SMS services to mobile and fixed networks of BH Telecom and 5 GB of mobile internet valid for 7 days. To activate, you need to send an empty SMS to 06111080.

For more data, the same packages as shown under data feature packages can be added. This SIM card may not be available anymore.

From July 2021 data are valid in all countries of the Western Balkans without surcharges. Nevertheless, they still offer some special roaming packages for these countries which may not be such a good deal anymore. For the Western Balkan countries Albania, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Serbia they have issued two roaming data packages:

  • Balkan NET 5 days: 300 MB for 5 days: 5 KM, activation: Balkan5
  • Balkan NET 10 days: 1 GB for 10 days: 10 KM, activation: Balkan10

Activation is by texting the keyword to 0611124. For the EU better buy a SIM card there.

Ultra Tourist

Ultra Tourist is a special SIM card for tourists which is sold in three different varieties:

  • Ultra Tourist 1: 15 GB and 5 KM for calls and SMS valid for 10 days: 20 KM
  • Ultra Tourist 2: 30 GB and 10 KM for calls and SMS valid for 30 days: 40 KM
  • Ultra Tourist Group: 100 GB for 15 days: 100 KM

To check balance on the pack, dial *110#. These add-ons can be added to both packs:

  • 5 GB for 10 days: 15 KM, activation: *105*6*1#
  • 15 GB for 30 days: 35 KM, activation: *105*6*3#
  • 25 GB for 30 days: 50 KM, activation: *105*6*5#
  • Website partly in English:  https://www.bhtelecom.ba
  • VoIP is allowed
  • APN: minternet.bhmobile.ba or active.bhmobile.ba

Comparing the best Bosnian SIM cards for tourists

Having a prepaid SIM card when traveling through Bosnia can be very helpful, especially if you will be doing a road trip and driving around the country. In this blog article, we will be  comparing a few options of local prepaid SIM cards  available in Bosnia and Herzegovina to help you choose the best one for your trip.

We will be taking a close look at different providers, their plans, and coverage, and we will also share a bit of our personal experience during our trip.

best sim cards in bosnia

RECOMMENDED

Need an esim.

If you’re short on time, check the options from our most recommended providers for mobile internet around the world: Airalo and Nomad.

Bosnian prepaid SIM card options

If you are looking to get a local prepaid SIM card once you arrive in Bosnia and Herzegovina, you will have four companies to choose from BH Telecom, m:tel, HTERONET, and Haloo.

To help you decide which one is the best for you, we have put together a quick summary of the plans each of them offers. Let’s start with BH Telecom, which was the provider we used

BH Telecom prepaid SIM card options

BH Telecom’s prepaid SIM card offers have some of the  best value for money  compared to the other local Bosnian providers. Here is a summary of their plan options:

None of the described data coverage is available for use in EU countries. There are also other options of prepaid SIM cards that you can purchase if you need a combination of data + minutes/SMS. For most tourists, however, data coverage will be more than enough so we will not go into details here (you also get less data for what you pay so they are not worth it).

You can buy BH Telecom’s prepaid SIM cards in person at newsstands and local shops, but also online through their website.  Check the options available here .

M:tel prepaid SIM card options

M:tel is one of the largest phone providers in Bosnia, but unfortunately they provide very limited options of prepaid SIM cards for tourists. See the prices below:

The best way to buy a prepaid SIM card from m:tel is to do it in person, either at a local m:tel shop or at local stores like newsstands and gas stations.

The € 5.00 plan can be a very cheap option if you think you will be using less than 15 GB during your trip. Just be careful if you will be traveling abroad because none of the m:tel prepaid plans include data coverage in the EU.

bh telecom tourist 2

HTERONET prepaid SIM card options

The third local Bosnian company we will be looking into is HTERONET. Check below the price options of prepaid SIM cards available:

If you will only be in Bosnia for a day or two, HTERONET actually offers a very interesting option that gives you 20 GB per day for only € 1.50.

But if you will be staying in the country for longer, this option is not the most practical as you will need to be activating it every single day. You can buy HTERONET’s prepaid SIM cards physically in gas stations, newsstands, and local shops, which are located only in bigger cities.

The data coverage of all HTERONET SIM card options above is not available for use in the EU.

Haloo prepaid SIM card options

The last Bosnian phone company offering prepaid SIM card options for tourists is Haloo. Take a look at their prices below:

Similar to the previous option, Haloo offers good deals for travelers staying for one or two days only. I mean, for only € 1.00 you can get 21 GB… I doubt you will be able to get such good prices elsewhere.

But when it comes to the plans that are valid for more days, you get proportionally less data for your money. You can buy Haloo prepaid SIM cards at their local shops in Bosnia, but you are not able to use the acquired data in any EU country.

Which is the best Bosnian SIM card for tourists?

It really depends on what you will need the SIM card for, but we have personally decided to  go for BH Telecom  and we were satisfied with it.

We bought our prepaid SIM card at a newsstand in Mostar, it was super fast and simple. We didn’t have to provide any document or ID, only pay for it, activate it, and start using it. We had good coverage in the country, also used it as GPS when  driving through Bosnia . Overall, we can recommend it if you want to use a local phone provider.

However, if you will be traveling outside of Bosnia, maybe you would want to consider another option such as the international eSIMs we will show you in the next section.

The reason why I say this is from personal experience. We bought the prepaid SIM cards from BH Telecom because we were told the data coverage would be available also in other Balkan countries such as Serbia and Montenegro. We especially needed it for Serbia, which was the next country on our road trip. The sad part is that as soon as we crossed the Serbian border, the data stopped working and we had to figure something else out to get connected there.

bh telecom tourist 2

Best SIM card if you will be traveling to multiple countries

Since none of the local Bosnian SIM card options offer data coverage that will give you access in EU countries and we had a bad experience with the so-called Balkan plan, our recommendation, if you will be traveling through multiple countries, is to consider  purchasing an eSIM .

Don’t know what an eSIM is? Here we explain everything about  how eSIMs work .

In short, eSIMs are digital SIM cards. All you have to do to get connected is choose and purchase a plan and activate it on your phone. It is very simple and you can get connected as soon as you land, saving you the hassle of looking around for the physical SIM cards.

We personally use the eSIMs from  Airalo  because we found them to be the  most practical option . You can choose the plan that serves you best based on which countries you will visit, and for how long.

The most popular questions about buying SIM cards for traveling to Montenegro

Can i buy prepaid sim cards at sarajevo airport.

Yes, it is possible to buy a prepaid SIM card at  Sarajevo Airport.  You can find them at the newsstand or you can go to the shop of BH Telecom located on the ground floor of the car building of Terminal B.

Keep in mind that the demand can sometimes be quite high from tourists coming into the city so the newsstand may not have all options of Bosnian SIM cards available at all times.

If you don’t find what you are looking for, you can always buy it at the center of Sarajevo, where you will find plenty of places selling it.

Where to buy a prepaid SIM card in Bosnia?

The best places to buy a prepaid SIM card in Bosnia are newsstands and gas stations. You can easily find them in every corner and every village.

If you will be staying in one of the bigger cities of Bosnia, you can also choose to buy a SIM card directly at the store of the phone provider of your choice.

How can I buy a prepaid SIM card in Bosnia? Do I need any documents?

You don’t need to sign any paperwork or present any documents when buying a prepaid SIM card from most newsstands or gas stations. When buying it from the official stores of the phone providers, you may be asked to provide an official document or ID.

In all cases, you don’t need to worry about having to sign any sort of contract or paperwork. Buying a prepaid SIM card is the perfect option for tourists because it is super easy and fast.

Can I use the same prepaid SIM card in Bosnia, Serbia, and Montenegro?

Technically, yes. The roaming fees were abolished in the Western Balkan in recent years, so you are technically able to use the same prepaid SIM card for Bosnia and other Balkan countries.

If this is what you are looking for, just make sure you  pay attention to the small letters  when choosing your phone plan. Most local phone providers offer prepaid SIM card options that have coverage available throughout the Balkan region. However, it did not work for us and we were left without connection once we crossed the border.

To avoid any headache like this, we recommend using an international eSIM provider like  Airalo  when going on a multi-country trip.

Do Croatian SIM cards work in Bosnia?

Croatian SIM cards will work in Bosnia but since you will be going abroad, you will be charged roaming fees.

Croatia is part of the European Union so most Croatian SIM cards have data coverage that is also available in other EU countries, but not abroad, like in Bosnia. The same happens the other way around – the data from Bosnian prepaid SIM cards cannot be used in Croatia.

If you want to stay connected in both countries, we recommend looking into the options offered by international SIM companies like  Airalo .

Will I pay roaming fees for using my American SIM card in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

Yes. Using your local American SIM card abroad during your trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina will come with  hefty roaming fees  unless you pay for a package that gives you access to data abroad.

These phone packages are usually quite pricey, especially if compared to the prices of local Bosnian SIM cards such as the ones we presented in this post. You can buy the SIM card once you arrive in Bosnia at a physical store or order one online via  Airalo

How to Get Prepaid Internet in Bosnia and Herzegovina

This post will teach you how to get prepaid internet in bosnia and herzegovina, if you are a tourist, or if you come to the country for a longer stay.

If you are a traveler roaming around Europe, and the Balkans are on your list, then this article will help you get some information on how to get prepaid internet in Bosnia and Herzegovina .

how to get prepaid internet in Bosnia

Getting prepaid internet in Bosnia and Herzegovina is relatively easy and a number of telecom operators are providing this service. You will have to choose the one that fits your needs the best, according to the price, internet speed, and duration. Also, you should check special offers given by some providers during the peak seasons.

How to get a Prepaid Sim Card in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Buying a prepaid sim card in Bosnia and Herzegovina is quite easy. But this will also depend on the service provider you are choosing. The main network operators in Bosnia and Herzegovina are BH Telecom , m:tel and HT Eronet .

All of the providers have different offers, prices, and terms of services. Regardless of which one you choose, most of them make it quite easy for visitors to buy sim card. Most of the big cities and towns have official stores where you can find out the best internet options and prices. However, probably the best and most common place to buy your sim card is from numerous newsstands and kiosks.

Getting a sim card doesn’t require long procedure and it is easy to get. Also, sim cards are considered very cheap regardless of your provider, since you can buy it for under 5 euros. The activation process is quite fast and you can do it by just calling a given number and by following the steps.

Unlike in most EU countries, it is not necessary to do any registration on your Bosnian sim. You don’t need to show your passport or fill any form. You can get a sim card from a kiosk or convenience store and activate it right away.

Which Prepaid Internet To Choose in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Maybe the best way to choose how to get prepaid internet in Bosnia and Herzegovina should be based on a territory you want to stay. Although BH Telecom is the best provider in Bosnia and Herzegovina, many people living in RS use m:tel.

However, I would recommend BH Telecom as the leading network provider. They have their official stores in many cities around the country and give numerous internet options. Ultra is their well known prepaid product, which you can buy for only 5 KM (less than 3 euros). BH Telecom introduced Ultra Internet Start package (sim card with internet traffic, but disabled for voice service), 300 mb of internet, initial credit of 3 KM for texting and Mobile Internet, MMS, mMail, SMS, Ozone (WiFi). This package is 5 KM, lasting 7 days.

Another, Ultra Internet Special Editon, including similar options as the previous package, but with 2 GB of internet. It lasts for 10 days you can buy for 15 KM. You can always add more internet traffic with buy&surf option. You can always get more information by visiting their web page.

Also in 2020 tourist packages are included. There are two Ultra Tourist options, Ultra Tourist 1: 15 GB and 5 KM for calls and SMS valid for 10 days, costing 20 KM. The second option is Ultra Tourist 2: 30 GB and 10 KM for calls and SMS valid for 30 days. at a price of 40 KM.

m:tel has tourist packages for people visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Tourist Ino Min & Net package includes 30 minutes for calls to fixed and mobile networks to a number of European countries. It also includes 5 GB of mobile data at the maximum speed (up to 21 Mbps). The package costs 25 KM.

Although there are several network providers in Bosnia and Herzegovina the most convenient one is BH Telecom. You can find Ultra, their most famous prepaid product at any kiosk, newsstand or shopping mall. The activation process is easy and the prices are affordable.

Overall it is very easy to get prepaid internet in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it is also very cheap.

If you are coming to Bosnia, check our posts on where to stay in Sarajevo and where to stay in Mostar .

Hi, I’ve just got back from Sarajevo and just wanted to let you know that M:tel also has a just data package called Friend which is valid for 3 days and provides unlimited usage of data only for 10.00 KM. The 3G coverage was OK in Sarajevo and in the region of Mostar. We only once experinced the lack of 3G somwhere between Medugorje and Kravice waterfalls.

thanks for sharing the info!

BH Telecom eSIM

The esim card, integrated with the user's device, contains all the data as the classic sim card, but is much simpler to use..

Updated: 2023/07/05

It enables use of prepaid, postpaid or combined services of BH Telecom without a physical SIM card. With eSIM you can install and use several different mobile packages on the same device.

Users from abroad can buy eSIM card through the BH Telecom web shop, so they can use mobile services as soon as they enter BiH. eSIM card can be purchased at all sale points of BH Telecom, where they can also replace the existing SIM / USIM card for eSIM card and get all necessary information.

The eSIM service can be activated in two ways. The first is by scanning a QR code sent to your e-mail address. Your new eSIM card is then installed by scanning the QR code on the device itself, and the eSIM with the corresponding tariff package is downloaded to the device. The second way is manual activation of settings after the purchase on the device itself.

Learn more about eSIM cards on the www.bhtelecom.ba/e-sim and check eSIM service activation options for your device by calling 1444.
