The Bible Lands Museum Jerusalem holds a unique collection dating back to the beginning of written history. It tells the story of humanity, the story of culture, the story of where we came from and how we got here.

The Bible Lands Museum Jerusalem presents the history of humanity through one of the most important collections of artifacts from the Ancient Near East – the Lands of the Bible – from Egypt eastwards across the Fertile Crescent to Afghanistan, and from Nubia north to the Caucasian mountains. You will learn of the Philistines and the Arameans, the Hittites and the Elamites, the Phoenicians and the Persians. The Mesopotamians, the pyramid builders and the ancient Phoenicians are no longer with us.

The museum hosts daily guided tours in English at 10:30 am, and on Wednesday an extra English tour at 5:30 pm

Current Exhibits:

Early birds: soaring with the ancients (new exhibit).

In ancient cultures, birds were associated with different aspects of human experience: power, love, evil, order and chaos, death and resurrection. The exhibition focuses on birds in different ancient civilizations and examines their roles in human lives and beliefs.  The exhibition is divided into four domains: the sky, the water, the earth and the world beyond.

Jerusalem in Babylon: New Light on Judean Exiles

This special exhibition displays the Al-Yahudu Tablets — the earliest evidence of the families that were exiled to Babylon following the destruction of the First Temple.

Roman Fresco Room

A glimpse into glorious Pompeian wall paintings. An exquisite collection of Roman frescoes from the 1st century — on display by request only.

Gods, Heroes and Mortals in Ancient Greece

The dramatic world of ancient Greek mythology is revealed in this exhibition presenting rare and exquisite masterpieces of ancient Greek pottery dating back 4,000 years.

The Classical Court

The museum’s collection features Estruscan, Greek and Roman art from the pre-classical period in the seventh century BCE through the second century CE.

Kids Activities: Weekly Story Hour

The museum has launched a new series of Bird Tales , to compliment its new exhibition  “Early Birds: Soaring the Ancients” . Every Wednesday in October and November, let your imagination soar to distant lands and join birds and other winged-creatures from Biblical lands on their weekly adventures!

Please note all kids events are in Hebrew.

History of this museum

The Museum, located in Givat Ram near the Israel Museum Jerusalem was founded in 1992 by Elie Borowski to house his personal collection. On a previous visit in 1981 he was encouraged to bring his collection to Israel and build a museum following his vision. Then City mayor Teddy Kolllek made it possible for him to do just that.

Quoting Dr Borowsky, a Near Eastern scholar who built this collection during a period of 40 years:

“Each of the objects has its time in history, its location in space, its meaning in religion and daily life, and last but not least, its beauty and artistry.”

Exhibits at the Bible Lands Museum

The main gallery displays hundreds of artifacts and ancient documents, all documented in the wall next to it. Others have next to it an elaborate article explaining it precedence such as the origin of the alphabet, Abrahams Journey from Ur to the Promised Land.

About this place

The Bible Land Museum is an archaeological museum in Jerusalem. It is the only museum in the world dedicated to the history of the people of the Bible in the Ancient Near East. The core exhibitions trace man’s belief in one God back to its roots in ancient civilizations. People of all faiths can learn about Biblical history and the foundations of Judeo-Christian heritage. The museum aims to put the people of the Bible into a historic context. In 1992, scholar and art dealer-collector Elie Borowski moved his collection of Ancient Near Eastern Art from Toronto to Jerusalem to establish the museum. The museum offers cultural events, workshops, themed tours, educational programs, and lectures to adults and children.

Exhibitions at the Bible Lands Museum

The museum’s core exhibition is From Sumer to Rome: Treasures of the Ancient World. Sumer refers to the land of the Sumerians, ancient non-Semitic-speaking people of Western Asia. The collection includes ancient religious art and architecture from the region. It traces monotheism from the beginning of civilization to early Christianity. The collection takes visitors on a journey through the ancient Bible Land. Artifacts include pieces from Afghanistan, Israel, the Caucasian Mountains, and as far south as Sudan. This is the area known as ancient Mesopotamia. It was the cradle of civilization, with Israel at its center. Through the exhibits, you can learn about the civilizations that rose and fell, including Sumerians, Egyptians, Assyrians, Canaanites, Babylonians, Philistines, Hittites, Phoenicians, and Persians.

What Can You See at the Bible Land Museum?

Among the artifacts on display are ancient documents, coins, idols made from various materials, seals, ceramics, and primitive weapons, from across the ancient Near East. There are scale models of important ancient sites including the pyramids in Egypt, and places in Jerusalem. Signage explains the relationship of the artifacts to Biblical history with relevant Biblical quotes and explanations about relevant topics. The main gallery displays historic artifacts in chronological order. Other themed sections cover specific aspects of Biblical history like the story of David and Goliath. One exhibition focuses on Gods, Heroes, and Mortals in Ancient Greece. The Bible Lands Museum also hosts temporary exhibitions such as Yemen: From Sheba to Jerusalem. A visit to this museum gives visitors an overview of the deep religious roots in Israel, the Bible land.

At Ezekiel 20:6, we find a phrase that was used exclusively to described only one place on earth.  As recorded there, Jehovah assured his people that he had searched and found the “ the most beautiful of all the lands. ”  That “promised land” encompassed all of what is today known as Israel.  As a student of the scriptures there is nowhere else on earth you can visit or explore that is as faith strengthening.

Now is your opportunity to be part of a truly unique and encouraging experience as explore Israel with Oasis Bible Land Tours .  For over 20 years, our guides have been freely escorting groups to the Bible Lands.  This cumulative research and experience of these brothers and of Meander Bible Tours in England is the basis for the tour. Israel is so rich in Bible history and lively cultures, we decided to create a comprehensive tour for all, whether you are visiting for the fist time or have been to Israel before. This distinct and thrilling tour is a full 2 weeks in length and takes in amazing places often overlooked or that require more time to visit. The comments below illustrate how much others have treasured and benefited from this tour. Many who have been to Israel before taking our tour have expressed to us that never have they been on such a wide-ranging and comprehensive tour as this.

bible lands museum tours

Picture yourself standing in the exact places where Bible characters and stories you are already familiar with actually took place.

After the Israelites crossed into the Promised Land, what was the area like where they camped?

As David was on the run from Saul what conditions did he find himself in?

How long was the walk from Gethsemane to the Temple?

When Israelites ascended the steps of the Temple to present their sacrifice to Jehovah, what unique situation did they encounter?

Why were Jesus’ words “by no means will a stone be left here upon a stone and not be thrown down” so shocking to his audience?

What is the temperature of the water in Hezekiah’s Tunnel?

As Elijah stood on the top of Mt. Carmel and challenged the prophets of Baal what was the view like?

What does floating in Dead Sea feel like on your skin?

As you sail on the Sea of Galilee what does it feel like to approach Tiberias by boat?

What was the view of the Temple like for Jesus and his apostles as they sat on the Mount of Olives?

You will not only understand the answers to these and dozens of other scenarios, you will actually experience them for yourself.  Those who have done these trips in the past agree, your Bible reading will never be the same again.  As one long time servant of Jehovah said, “Before I went to Israel I read the Bible in black and white.  Now I read it in color!”

SPECIAL FEATURES

Beginning in 1991 ,  we were privileged to enjoy the rich fellowship and personal training provided on many Bible Land tours by our dear Brother Emmanuel Zervides of Meander Bible Tours.  Sadly, he passed away recently.  In addition the normal “must see” sites in Israel, we have some very special arrangements for our groups visiting Israel.  We’ve also worked closely with local brothers in Israel to develop a custom tour conducted for free at the Israel Museum  in Jerusalem.  Depending on several factors, a customized tour of the Bible Lands Museum , also in Jerusalem, may also be included as an optional stop on our trips. As with past groups, we are sure you will find these tours to be not only incredibly in depth, but extremely encouraging and faith-strengthening.  Without prior research, knowledge, and presentation, it would be virtually impossible to benefit to the full from a casual visit to these world class museums on your own.  We consider it a real privilege to make this experience possible for our groups visiting there.

WHERE DO WE GO?

A more extensive itinerary will be provided for those who actually book reservations for a trip, but below is just a small sampling the areas we’ll visit as they are referred to in the scriptures:

Seacoast of the Great Sea – Josh. 15:12

The Hill Country of Judah.— Josh. 11:21

The Salt (Dead) Sea (Sea of the Arabah) – Num. 34:3

District of the Jordan Valley (The Ghor) – 1 Ki. 7:46

Bible Lands Museum

February 20th 2015

Have you heard of the Canaanites, Egyptians, Hittites, Persians and Philistines but have little grasp of who they actually were or what their cultures were like? The Bible Lands Museum explores how the various peoples mentioned in the Bible, including the ancient Hebrews, actually lived. This may be the best place in the world to gain a better understanding of the societies of the ancient Near East.

Bible Lands Museum Jerusalem

The permanent exhibition here includes an introductory gallery followed by 20 satellite galleries, each focused on a specific geographical area or historical time period. Several galleries focus on Jewish history in the Land of Israel, including galleries eight and nine, which cover the life of the Patriarch Abraham; gallery ten, which covers the exodus from Egypt; gallery 14, which encompasses the First Temple period; and gallery 18, which covers the Second Temple Period, the beginnings of Christianity and the rise of Roman rule over the land.

Since the museum covers such a wide expanse of time and geography, the staff here has developed an array of theme-based guided tours. All guided tours must be scheduled in advance. By the Rivers of Babylon considers how the Babylonian Exile, which followed the destruction of the First Temple, impacted the Jewish People. There is a special 30-minute tour of Christian interest called From the Chosen Father to the Chosen Son, which helps visitors better understand the historical beginnings of Judaism and Christianity . In the Footsteps of the Patriarchs covers Abraham, the culture in which he was raised, his journey to the Promised Land and his religious ideals. This tour also covers Egypt during the time thar Jacob and his sons dwelled there, before the Israelites became slaves. The role and status of women in the ancient Near East is explored in a tour called And God Made Woman… This tour focuses on artifacts that explore the concepts of beauty, motherhood, fertility and war that are commonly associated with women.

The Museum of the Jews’ History

For the most part in our Museum the history of the part of Jewry that had fallen under in the power of the Russian crown after three partitions of Poland is represented. In everyday life culture, religious traditions, language, customs this group was genetically connected to Ashkenazi Jews – the European Jewry. This is the name of the Jews, migrated to Poland from Germany and North France in the Middle Ages. As Fate willed, they became the subjects of the Russian Empire, but they weren’t given any rights even the right to freedom of movement. The region of their traditional habitation that used to play an important economic role in the days of the Poland’s independence, became a distant province of Russia – the Pale of Settlement .

The Museum of the Jews' History

Today the exposition of the Museum may be conditionally divided on two parts: – traditional culture – prevalent forms of community existence, education, charity, particular features of everyday life, observance of religious directions, “sacred service” (decorating synagogues and religious items); to this part it should be needed to ascribe the collection representing traditions and culture of non Ashkenasi Jewish Communities to this part of the exposition; – historical processes – mutual relations between the Jews and the society and authorities, the Jewish contribution into economy, culture and science development, a Jewish experience of land utilization and an attempt of creation of Jewish Autonomy in the USSR.

Sculpture “Tragedy of the nations” in Victory Park

The building of the Temple of the Memory on Poklonnaya Gora, a flat hill in the West of Moscow, between the Setun River and another hill, was constructed and opened on September 1998 in Boris Yeltsin ‘s presence. The construction of the Temple of Memory was financed by the Russian Jewish Congress – a non-profit charitable fund and the largest secular organisation of Russian Jews. The Temple of memory architect was Moshe Zarhy (Zarhy Architects) from Israel. In the Holocaust Memorial Synagogue there is a hall with a balcony, the offices for the rabbi and a library. An exhibition about history of the Jewish people and the Holocaust was located in the building. The building is also used as a museum. The interior of the building was designed by Frank Meisler , too. Meisler created wall sculptures showing Jerusalem, the Twelve Tribes of Israel and the Five Books of Moses.

Boris Pasternak's museum house

Guided tour of Pasternak's museum housein Peredelkino village

Pasternak’s “important achievement both in contemporary lyrical poetry and in the field of the great Russian epic tradition" was honored with a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958. For many readers outside Russia, Pasternak is known mainly as the author of the touching historical novel Doctor Zhivago written in 1957. The novel as a whole communicates the haphazard, uncertain and chaotic quality of life caused by the Russian Revolution and the heroic case of quiet humanism demonstrated by a single person.

Pasternak’s translations of Georgian poets favored by Joseph Stalin probably saved his life during the purges of the 1930’s. However, the individualistic Pasternak was not suited to the Soviet artistic climate when art was required to have a clear socialism-inspired agenda and so Russian publishers were unwilling to print Pasternak’s novel. In fact, Doctor Zhivago first appeared in Italy in 1957.

Pasternak won his Nobel Prize the following year. Despite Pasternak politely declining his Nobel Prize quoting: “because of the significance given to this award in the society to which I belong”, the award nevertheless spread his fame well beyond Russia. He ended his life in virtual exile in an artist's community in Peredelkino village. His last poems are devoted to love, to freedom and to reconciliation with God.

Pasternak was rehabilitated posthumously in 1987. In 1988, after being banned for three decades, "Doctor Zhivago" was published in the USSR. In 1989 Pasternak's son accepted his father's Nobel medal in Stockholm.

Pastenak loved his house in Peredelkino, the house and surrounding nature featuring in his poetry. The poet considered the cycle of poems "Peredelkino", which he completed in the spring of 1941, to be his best work. The poet spent the first difficult months of the war in Peredelkino; he completed the novel "Doctor Zhivago" here, wrote the Lara poems and translated Shakespeare and Goethe. It was in this house that he learned he was to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature on October 23rd 1958. He died here on May 30 1960.

The house in Peredelkino only acquired the status of a museum in 1990, thirty years after the poet's death and a century after his birth. The museum has fully preserved the environment and atmosphere of the house where Boris Pasternak lived and worked. The director of the museum is Elena Pasternak, grandaughter of Boris Pasternak.
