I would recommend this tour to anyone. While the biking was a challenge at times (more hills, more technical riding than I had anticipated), the scenery was amazing and the group dynamic could not have been better. People and the guide supported you no matter what--if you climbed up a hill, walked your bike or rode in the van, you had the freedom and support to do what was best for you. It was very well organized during the rides, and we had some freedom to either be with the whole group, with a smaller group or by ourselves in the evenings and that flexible approach to downtime was appreciated. Our guides Marco and Joan were the best; they clearly love their jobs and their country and were eager to share its history and culture with us. Their warmth and sense of humor are things I will remember fondly from the trip. People on the tour were a mix of friends traveling together, couples, and people who came alone. Toughest part of the trip was saying good-bye to them but I look forward to exploring other parts of the world with this tour group.

Bikes: Good to excellent, saddle size was a downgrade. The large, padded saddles caused new friction where sitting wear points didn't exist. Unfortunately, bike companies refuse to standardize bike saddles so there is no solution for clients traveling too far to bring a saddle. Route: appreciate the tremendous work on routing . . . but it appeared as fair-weather routing. Spring rains turned many (most) miles of hard-packed dirt (with a bit of gravel) into mud, hectares of mud. (And in the water/mud, one cannot see the potholes.) We made a few ride-arounds after bogging down too often in the seasonal mud. We also rode around the silly segment to 'walk the bikes on the sand'. Recommend Eurobike recommend one free and one pay mapping routing service to clients to use with the GPX provided. Lodging: Strongly prefer lodging on the route and with local flavor vs corporate (holiday vs business traveler). Lagos - Hotel Tavoli had ants in the bathroom. Lodging at Albefera, Cerro da Marina was excessively off the route and in a heavily residential area. Luggage transfer: perfect.

We had a terrible experience with Exodus. We signed up for a "Self-Guided Cycling in the Douro Valley" several months in advance. Our detailed contacts were asked for by Exodus, but then never communicated to the actual operator. This meant that our agreed pick-up driver never showed up (he had incorrect information) and we had to fumble with international calls and roaming charges to contact a real person on a Saturday morning. Exodus could have offered us compensation on the spot for this ordeal. I wouldn't recommend their trips to anyone. Look around as Exodus charges a fortune.

Just completed a fantastic 11 day guided cycling trip of Sardinia with ExperiencePlus! This was our second trip. Last year, we cycled through the Peloponnese with ExperiencePlus! Both of these experiences were fantastic. Great cycling, excellent hotels and food, fun and knowledgeable (and responsible) guides. Wonderful way to see some new sights, make new friends, and just not worry about the details!

Bike Across Portugal Plus! the Coast

I have been on several Experience Plus bike tours. Every one has been well organized and delightful. This latest tour through southern and coastal Portugal was even a step above the previous tours I took, primarily because of the high quality of the three tour guides who took such good care of us. In addition, the members of the tour group quickly formed a supportive community displaying energy and humor and adding to the experience. All aspects of the tour were fine, and it left my wife and I with a wish that we could do the northern Portugal tour with Experience Plus next year.

Reviews of portugal bike tours.

Great ride, pedaling along the beach and through forests, many miles of which are bicycle path and board walk. The bicycle provided were perfect, lightweight, front suspension MTBs with provided large capacity handlebar bag. The ride was not overly taxing, although hillier as the days went on. The cafe stops were delightful. Historic and natural beauty surrounded us. Hotels and buffet breakfasts were perfect. The guide Alex a Portugal native was superb, corralling us as needed for safety, espousing on history, geography and such. We had a friendly group and a lovely time. Highly recommended.

What People Are Saying

Southern Atlantic coast and Algarve, Portugal Four intrepid bikers completed the 8 day tour just ahead of covid-19 March 20, 2020. Lisbon and the coastal bike route were grand, as described. Maps could have been better quality. Two GPS supplied with route loaded, finding the correct route in towns and leaving villages was a challenge. Lodgings and restaurants very nice, some staying open when we were the only guests. Sergio, Enrique and Diego, and Tripsite were extremely helpful daily! Thanks. We are home now, finished with the virus quarantine, well and ready to create a photo log of the trip. Hope to return to see the northern coast soon. ... Read more Sally , USA ,
Sergio arranged a really great 5 day (6 nights) tour for me with breathtaking views of Douro valley, interesting and challenging off roads, quite and tranquil back countries, and comfortable and quaint accommodations to relax in at the end of each day. Sergio took great care of us (there were another couple whose tour dates were the same as mine), checked from time to time to see how we are doing, any questions or problems we might have, and shared with us much information on the local culture. His other staff are also great, friendly and knowledgeable about their city. Sergio arranged for a free walking tour of Porto as part of the package, and when we were at Pinhao he took us to a vineyard for port wine tasting. We were equipped with GPS with turn by turn instructions, no way to get lost. Douro valley is a beautiful and serene place to cycle, sometimes you feel like you have the whole place just to yourself. The villages and towns along the way are not touristy at all, very much maintained its local way of life. A great way to see beautiful nature and way of life in the wine country of Portugal. Really recommend a visit to the archeological site of Foz Coa to see the rock art our ancestor left us over 20,000 years ago and hear about the fascinating history of how it was discovered and the fight to preserve an important part of human heritage. Miss the nature, the sun and tranquility of Douro wine valley. Fold'n and Visit is the company to go with when you want to book tours in Porto or the countryside around it. Really recommend it for their service, care, attention to details and hospitality. ... Read more Wagabonne , Beijing, China ,

This venture champions autonomy, personal expression, and genuine cultural engagements.

Our tours are segmented into three tiers of difficulty: Leisurely , Moderate , and Challenging , categorized by the usual daily routine, although there may be variations in difficulty throughout the trip.

Leisurely tours are ideal for those in pursuit of a relaxed adventure amidst stunning landscapes, without the challenge of covering long distances or tackling rough terrains. These journeys typically cover 30-50 km each day, with an elevation gain of up to 500m. This allows plenty of pauses to relish the scenic vistas, enjoy local delicacies, and explore charming villages and towns along the way.

Moderate bike tours are tailored for those seeking a beautiful blend of scenic trails and a dash of challenge. Generally covering 50-80 km daily with an elevation gain of up to 1000m, these tours traverse enchanting landscapes and delightful villages, featuring a mix of flat and rolling terrains. They not only provide ample chances to stop and explore but also ensure a satisfying cycling workout.

Challenging bike tours are meant for experienced cyclists eager to push their limits. Spanning 80-120 km daily with an elevation gain of up to 2000m, these tours entail tackling steep ascents and demanding terrains. Though these tours require a high level of fitness and endurance, the exhilarating feeling of accomplishment at the end of each day, coupled with breathtaking views, makes the endeavor thoroughly rewarding.

We are devoted to discovering the ideal match for you. We collaborate with numerous lodging providers who meet our standards, although their availability may fluctuate, especially during peak demand times. Furthermore, we can customize your vacation to align with your preferences and budget, ensuring we identify the most fitting choice for your needs.

We advise booking your tour at the earliest opportunity, especially for popular tourist destinations with limited lodging availability. Prime choices often get snapped up for the summer before spring even arrives.

Addressing dietary preferences can vary based on their complexity. In Portugal, vegetarian options are generally available, but finding vegan meals might be more challenging in rural areas or smaller towns. Notably, lunch stops are often at traditional eateries which may not cater to special dietary needs beyond their standard menu. Keep this in consideration as you plan your adventure.

The ideal cycling season in Portugal stretches from mid-April to mid-October. In elevated regions like the Serra da Estrela, it’s preferable to cycle from mid-May to September.

Tours in Portugal can continue in light rain with the appropriate clothing. Summer frequently witnesses afternoon thunderstorms, making early tour starts recommended. If challenging weather conditions are expected, we’ll strive to adjust the tour beforehand.

CYCLING PORTUGAL: A GUIDE TO PLAN YOUR BIKE TOUR IN PORTUGAL

Cycling portugal is our favorite way of discovering the country. if you are planning to discover portugal by bike, check our quick guide, inspired on our experience of hosting portugal bike tours , that showcases the best tips to make the most of your bike tour in portugal..

Portugal is know to be one of the world’s most searched for holiday destinations. The country's popularity has been increasing enourmously, as more and more guests visit and praise its gastronomy, culture, natural beauty and authenticity. We couldn’t agree more - after all, we live here - and we’ve been benefiting from its climate and lifestyle for quite some time now. The country is doing a great job at promoting but also at securing its identity and its culture. One of the best ways to tap into the authenticity of the portuguese lifestyle and traditions is travelling by bicycle. Cycling Portugal is a great way to get to know the country, especially the less urbanized areas, where you’ll find the quaint villages, the vineyards, the fresh fish, the mediterranean cuisine and, for us cyclists, the absence of cars. Even though the country lacks big infrastructures like cyclepaths, it makes up by having great backroads, from north to south, that you can use to travel in. So, the question remains:

WHY CHOOSE PORTUGAL AS A CYCLING DESTINATION?

Weather, culture, gastronomy, geographical diversity, history, nature… you name it.

Great, accessible, diversity:  With 10 million inhabitants and 92,212 km2 of surface, it’s considered one of the most geographically diverse countries in Europe and home to several UNESCO world heritage sites and traditions - small enough country for you to cover a great portion of it on a bike to get to know lots of different heritage sites, traditions, flavours and natural beauty. Portugal is home to amazing beaches, glacial valleys, big mountain ranges, wine countries and national parks.

Tourism oriented : Tourism is one of the country’s main activities, which means you can find many types of hotels everywhere, overall good english knowledge, good transportation and lots of options of restaurants or cafés. Cycling in Portugal, you’ll find great infrastructures to support your stay: from amazing 5 star hotels to charming palaces and farms that have been restored with great care to host tourists from all around the world. Home to several UNESCO world heritage sites, we proudly take care of our touristic attraction and destinations.

Great cycling climate all year long:  By Facing the north Atlantic Ocean, it’s home to a maritime climate, with average annual temperature of 16 Degrees and sunny weather all year long, making it perfect for cycling in Portugal. In July or August, it’s best to choose the region of your liking wisely, as it can be too hot for cycling in some interior areas. Cycling Portugal, you'll experience moderate Autumn and Winter is topped by a sunny spring and summer. This makes it a great option as a cycling holidays destination, either to start off your season or just riding throughout the summer.  Click to read on our “winter cycling in Portugal” article

Rich history and culture : Portugal has been the epicenter of trade routes, that once led the strongest naval fleet the world had ever seen, spanning over 600 years. Visiting Portugal, you'll encounter a country of explorers and one of the first to adventure into the see and discover cultures in Africa, Asia, India and the Americas, which is still today visible in it’s language, the third most spoken in the world. The “Portucale” county was formed in 1139 by D. Afonso Henriques, in an epic family battle. But even before it’s foundation,“Lusitania” was inhabited by Romans since 45 BC, the Visigoths, the Moors and many others. Today, Portugal is a sovereign nation-state which prides itself of being a part of Europe and having a rich and strong history and identity and as a petite country opened to the world, Portugal has always embraced other cultures and arts. Nowadays, you will find that modern and contemporary architecture, literature, music and theatre, all blend with millennial traditions and craftsmanship. A bike tour in Portugal provides a relaxing and authentic way to discover the country.

Great food and wines : What is more important after having a tough and exhausting ride during the day than to enjoy a delicious meal? Regarding food, Portugal is definitely worth a visit: Being bathed by the Atlantic ocean means Portugal thrives on fantastic, fresh fish and seafood, expertly used in its trademark mediterranean cuisine. But the country’s great variety of cultures and landscapes means each region has an endless variety of cheese, wines and local gastronomy, so if you are cycling Portugal, you'll get to discover the Douro and Alentejo have been voted best wine countries in the world, not just because they are home to some of the best wine tasting experiences, but also because of their picturesque and authentic landscapes, people, wineries, farms and culture. So, everywhere you go, you’ll find it easy to savour great, authentic and simple food. From Michelin star restaurants to local “tascas”, Portugal is a foodie’s heaven.

Great backroads and trails, with small car-density : Most of the country’s population is condensed around Lisbon, Porto and cities nearby it. The countryside is much less dense in population, and so is some of the coastline, natural parks, etc. For instance, the region of Alentejo, which is roughly the size of a country like Belgium, only has 400.000 inhabitants - this causes the backroads to be great to to ride on your bike, in an almost car-free environment, where you can visit the local vineyards - that creates a great atmosphere for a peaceful group ride. Also, many regions have invested in the creation of bike parks and in maintaining and improving trails, making it perfect for mountain biking.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GO CYCLING PORTUGAL?

Different regions are better explored in different times of the year...

Cycling Portugal, you’ll find a better experience in off peak season – July and August can be too hot for cycling, and there will be more tourists visiting during these months. You can do a bike tour in Portugal during the winter, the earliest months of the year, from January to March and enjoy the mild temperature, with an average of 17oC to 19oC, making it a great option for road cyclists and cycling groups who wish to improve their skills for the upcoming season. In April, May and June, you’ll benefit from the Spring time and early summer weather, making it a great season for leisure cycling and bicycle touring, with the flowers and crops in full bloom. September, October and even November are great for cycling as well, as the summer transitions into autumn for a great ending of the year - in September and October you can also witness harvest season, particularly in the wine regions of Douro and Alentejo.

Cycling in Portugal provides great photo opportunities

HOW SHOULD I PLAN MY TRIP?

Go on a self-guided adventure or choose a bike tour from a local supplier...

Fly in:  To reach Portugal, the best way is to fly to the airport that is the closest to the startpoint of your ride. You can choose the airport that best suits the region you wish to start discovering -  Porto airport is perfect to discover the North of Portugal, the Douro, to cycle to Santiago de Compostela by the Minho region; Lisbon airport is a better option to discover Sintra, the silver and blue coasts or Alentejo wine country; Faro airport will provide you a gateway into the south of the country, to the southwest coast and the Algarve. These are the three main airports in continental Portugal. You can also choose to fly to Ponta Delgada, in the Azores archipelago, to discover one of the most naturally beautiful destinations of the world, or to Funchal, in the island of Madeira.

Rent a bike and plan the route for yourself:  If you are an experienced rider, looking to expore the country on your own, maybe the best option is to look for Portugal Bike Rentals  that can provide you with good, reliable bikes - Portugal is a safe country, that can be explored on a self-guided adventure - just make sure you have the appropriate  bike routes , to steer you away from the traffic. You can also explore several options that are more oriented to cycling, like the following:

National Mountain bike centers ( "Centros de BTT"):  More than 1330km of identified trails in several mountain bike centers across the country, with special incidence in the North of Portugal

National cycletourism network : A project designed by a portuguese road project engineer and cycle touring enthusiast Paulo Guerra dos Santoos, with over 1375km of macadam trails and backroads, to ride from north to the south of Portugal.

Ecovia Algarviana: A 300km route in the Algarve, great for touring in the South of Portugal. Via Algarviana is a Great Pedestrian Route (GR13) which connects Alcoutim to Cabo de São Vicente, with a length of 300km, mostly installed in the Algarve mountain . It is intended that became part of the Trans-European routes, linking to the E4 and E9. The route crosses eleven municipalities in the Algarve (Alcoutim,Aljezur, Castro Marim, Tavira, S. Brás de Alportel, Loulé, Silves, Monchique, Lagos, Portimão and Vila do Bispo) and about 21 parish councils.

EuroVelo1:  From east to west, the Spanish border to Sagres, EuroVelo 1 crosses the Algarve in its entirety - over 200 kilometres of coastline - enough to suit everybody, from sheltered dunes to rocky coves, from tiny bays to vast stretches of open sands, from shallow lagoons to the crashing surf of the wild Atlantic.

Go on a bike tour in one ( or two) regions:  There are several companies offering  Portugal Bike Tours , operating in different regions. From assisted, self-guided tours to fully guided experiences, choosing to go on a planned experience gives you the opportunity to discover great trails but also hotels, restaurants, attractions, etc. Although the country's extension is not too big, it can take you nearly one week to fully discover a region like the Alentejo, Douro, Algarve or others. So the best option is either book one or two one-week bike tours in the regions you are more keen to discover. Keep in mind that different regions are best suited for different riders, as they have specific altimetries, landscapes and attractions. See below for a list of regions and how to discover them on a bike!

WHAT ARE THE BEST REGIONS TO GO CYCLING IN PORTUGAL?

Explore the ones that best fit your riding profile...

Cycling in Portugal: The Douro valley and International park

When to go:  March to June; September to October ( Harvest season) Type of rider:  Intermediate to Expert cyclists Bike type:  Road or Touring bike Terrain type:  Hilly Duration:  5 to 7 days

Explore the enchanting Douro Valley, a truly remarkable destination for a captivating bike tour in the northern reaches of Portugal. Begin your journey by flying into Porto airport, strategically situated where the Douro River converges with the sea, and the renowned Port wine cellars reside. As the world's inaugural demarcated wine region, the Douro Valley boasts an abundance of cellars, farms, viewpoints, restaurants, museums, and enticing activities for you to discover along your route (though we recommend venturing into the vineyards only after...). The birthplace of Port wine, this region also yields exceptional red and white wines, with the 2011 harvest being particularly noteworthy. To embark on the best cycling routes, head beyond Peso da Régua, the gateway to the wine region, accessible by car, boat from Porto, or a scenic train ride from the picturesque São Bento station.

To fully immerse yourself in the wine country, commence your ride in Peso da Régua and pedal alongside the river to Pinhão, traversing upward to Adorigo, Galafura, Alijó, and other captivating viewpoints. This hilly terrain, marked by both challenging ascents and exhilarating descents, is ideal for intermediate to expert cyclists. However, interspersed with rolling stages, such as the N22 between Peso da Régua and Pinhão, providing moments of respite and recovery. A bit upstream from Pinhão, continue ascending to São João da Pesqueira, ensuring a visit to the São Salvador do Mundo viewpoint. From Pesqueira, effortlessly reach Foz Côa, Moncorvo, or Marialva, initiating the exploration of the second leg of your journey—the Douro International Park. In this region, vineyards give way to expansive olive and almond tree fields, and the landscape evolves into a more rugged, untamed terrain. Uncover ancient treasures like the Foz Côa engravings (over 30,000 years old) and explore historical Portuguese villages such as Marialva, Trancoso, and Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, each crowned with its castle and fortifications, a testament to their proximity to Spain. The Douro Valley offers an unforgettable blend of challenging cycling routes and rich cultural exploration, ensuring an exhilarating and immersive experience for riders seeking the extraordinary.

Descending to Barca D’alva ( and climbing back) and riding alongside the Douro by the spanish border towards Freixo de Espada à Cinta is just mind blowing. As most of the region has private farms and plantations, we reccomend to explore the region on a road bike or a hybrid bike, as it’s easier to move around and you’ll enjoy a better experience. Another way to explore it is simply by joining a  Douro bike tour  with Live Love Ride - an excellent way to truly get to experience the lifestyle of this amazing region. Cycling in the Algarve

The Algarve, at the bottom of Portugal, is a fantastic place for a bike ride and the country's most popular spot for tourists, attracting nearly 10 million people each year, especially when it's busy. It's great for all kinds of cyclists - whether you're just starting, know your way around a bit, or are an expert. Lots of road cyclists and groups come here to enjoy cycling in Portugal and soak up the warm sun. The land is mostly flat along the coast, making it good for beginners or those who just want to take it easy. But if you're up for a challenge, there are two mountain ranges - the Caldeirão and Monchique. The highest point is Fóia, standing at 902 meters in Monchique. It's a tough climb, but the views of the Algarve coastline and even Alentejo from the top make it totally worth it.

In the Algarve, you'll also find the Ria Formosa lagoon, a big nature area for different birds, covering over 170 square kilometers. The south-facing coastline is about 155 kilometers long and is known for its cool limestone caves, especially near Lagos. You'll discover a variety of beaches, from quiet ones in the Vicentina Natural Park to big sandy ones in Alvor or Falésia. In the southwest, there are some fantastic trails in the Rota Vicentina, marked paths soon to be part of a larger cycling project called EuroVelo 1. This will let you cycle along the Algarve coast from east to west and then up along the southwest coast towards Alentejo. There, you'll find cliffs overlooking beautiful beaches and charming fishing villages. These beaches are flat with a few easy hills, making for a smooth ride. You can stay at a cozy hotel like the "Salgados Palace Hotel," right by the beach, or go on morning rides to Barranco do Velho or Monchique, two beautiful spots around the Algarve. Summer temperatures range from 25°C to 48°C, and that's why you'll find lots of cork, almond, and orange trees there. So, if you're looking for a great bike tour, there are plenty of reasons to choose Portugal.

The easiest way to get there is by flying to Faro. If there is no direct flight which suits your trip or the flights are too expensive, you can book a flight to Lisbon Airport and take a rental car down to the Algarve. There are plenty of good options to choose in the Algarve for a bike tour - explore Live Love Ride’s Algarve Bike tours whether as an  Algarve Cycling Camp  or on a  bike tour on the portuguese southwest coast .  Click here to read on a previous post from our blog, regarding “ Cycling Algarve - A guide to discover the south of Portugal on a bike ”.

Cycling in Portugal: Alentejo wine country

When to go:  March to June; September to November Type of rider:  Beginner to Intermmediate Bike type:  Road and touring bike Terrain type:  Mostly Rolling hills, with flat sections and ocassional climbs Duration:  5 to 7 days

cycling in Alentejo

Alentejo, hailed as one of the world's best wine country, is a delightful region in Portugal catering to all types of riders. Here, you'll navigate through endless rolling hills and hidden trails, weaving through vineyards, olive trees, and cork oak fields. The car-free roads and trails in Alentejo create a fantastic setting for any bike tour in Portugal. Its varied topography makes it especially suitable for beginner and intermediate riders, with minimal overall climbs. The landscape transitions from the rugged Marvão and Castelo de Vide mountain range in north Alentejo (Serra de Portalegre) to the olive tree and wine fields in central Alentejo, stretching from Estremoz to the Alqueva Lake, Europe's largest artificial lake. The Sierra D'Ossa's longer climbs provide an extra challenge. It's ideal to explore on a road or touring bike, as many fields are private and gated, often with grazing cattle.

With a total population of only 400,000 inhabitants, Alentejo stands as one of the country's less crowded regions. This means you'll often find yourself cycling along car-free roads and through charming little villages, engaging with the friendly local residents. Restaurants are scattered throughout, offering a taste of the local gastronomy, which boasts rich flavors of herbs, spices, pork, bread, olives, and olive oil—a fusion of Moorish and Portuguese influences. Alentejo's cultural heritage is deeply rooted, with ancient sites like 6000-year-old "Antas" and "Cromeleques," traces of Moorish architecture, medieval castles, and Roman temples. Explore local vineyards like Herdade do Esporão, Adega da Cartuxa, and Monte da Ravasqueira, indulging in on-the-spot wine tastings. One of our clients aptly described it as "Tuscany, without the hills," capturing the essence of Alentejo's charm and cycling allure.

Any bike tour in Alentejo should include Marvão, Castelo de Vide, Crato, Estremoz, Monsaraz and the Alqueva lake and Évora, the regions' capital and UNESCO world heritage fortified city where you'll find a melting pot of influences that make up the Alentejo's culture. From Évora, you can keep riding to the coastline, where you'll find some of the most amazing beaches in the country - Portugal's blue coast and Vicentina natural park, an area that deserves a bike tour on its own, that we'll cover below! cycling in the Portuguese southwest Coast

The stretch of the Alentejo and Algarve southwest coast, kissed by the Atlantic Ocean, offers some of Portugal's most captivating oceanic rides, especially within the Vicentina Natural Park. Starting in Sines and extending southward to Sagres (the country's southernmost point), this scenic route encompasses secluded beaches, cliffs, islets, and isolated rocks. The Pessegueiro island, a consolidated dune, rests just steps from the shore, while inland, a harmonious blend of woods, moors, irrigated and rainfed plantations, and production woods unfolds. The Southwest coast and Vicentina Natural Park boast rare botanical species, particularly around the Sagres and São Vicente capes, a diverse nesting bird fauna with white storks building nests on coastal rocks, and a vital passageway for numerous other bird species.

Riding alongside the coastline from north to south, the constant presence of the Atlantic Ocean, coupled with the varied backroads and trails of the Rota Vicentina, creates an incredible atmosphere for cycling. Ideal for mountain or touring bikes due to the mix of pavement along the way, this route accommodates different riders, from beginners to expert cyclists, despite encountering some climbs. Kickstart your bike tour from Lisbon, taking the train to Setúbal or Azeitão. Begin your ride by exploring Arrabida's natural park, then ferry across Setúbal's estuary to Tróia peninsula, where you can pedal alongside beautiful beaches and rice fields in Comporta. Head south to Sines, passing through stunning beaches like São Torpes and Porto Côvo, truly immersing yourself in the trails of the Costa Vicentina.

As it's a natural park, there aren't many hotels in this area, so it's wise to book early and opt for peaceful "herdades" along the way. Don't miss the must-see destinations of Cabo Sardão, Zambujeira, and Odeceixe before entering Algarve, cycling towards Aljezur and exploring the picturesque beaches of Amoreira, Carrapateira, and Arrifana. This coastal cycling adventure promises an unforgettable exploration of Portugal's Atlantic charms.

Riding south, you'll reach Sagres, the climax of your cycling holidays, as the country ends there, in Cape São Vicente. Start riding north towards Lagos, by the beaches of Burgau, Praia da Luz and many others and never forget to bring your swimsuit along for the ride, as there will be plenty of options to freshen up on the way. Click here to know more about our  Bike tour in the southwest coast of Portugal  or explore more about cycling in this area in  Rota Vicentina's website .

Cycling in Portugal: Porto and the Portuguese Camino de Santiago ( St James Path)

When to go:  May, June, July, September, October Type of rider:  Intermmediate Bike type:  Mountain and hybrid bikes Terrain type:  Mixed terrain Duration:  5 to 7 days

cycling in the Portuguese camino de Santiago

The St. James Path is more than a religious experience; it transcends into a spiritual odyssey for all who dare to embark on its sacred trail. Whether cycling from France, Spain, or Portugal, the Caminho de Santiago leaves an indelible mark on riders, becoming a milestone in their personal journeys. For those choosing the Portuguese Camino, the optimal starting point is Porto (or Lisbon for a 15-day adventure), leading cyclists through the captivating northwest of Portugal—specifically the Minho region—and into Galicia, Spain, culminating in the revered city of Santiago de Compostela. There are two main routes from Porto: the Coastal Path and the Central Path, both heading north—one along the coastline and the other approximately 30 km inland—converging in Pontevedra, Spain, before continuing the pilgrimage to Santiago.

Marked by yellow arrows or shells, guiding the way to the Santiago de Compostela cathedral, both paths are relatively easy to follow. However, the authenticity of the Portuguese Camino sets it apart from its more polished French or Spanish counterparts. The journey is rugged, genuine, and adventurous, providing a unique and enriching experience. The Central Path offers historical and cultural depth in the Minho region, passing through the charming Romanesque cities of Barcelos, Ponte de Lima, and Valença, with a bit more challenging climbs, particularly after Ponte de Lima in the "Labruja" sierra. The Coastal Path is smoother initially but presents technical terrain in the second and third days that may pose a challenge. Both routes feature diverse terrains—paved roads, macadam trails, ancient Roman roads, and occasional technical trails—mostly winding through forests and rural areas, interspersed with urban pockets like Porto and Vigo.

Optimal for the mixed terrain, a mountain or touring bike is recommended for the Camino, though it can be done by road with limitations on following all indications. Intermediate to expert riders can complete the Camino from Porto in 4 to 5 days, while beginners/intermediate riders may take 6 to 7 days. While the Camino is accessible to all, a degree of preparation is advised, especially for beginners, who might find themselves spending long hours on the bike daily. Embark on the Portuguese Camino de Santiago for an unforgettable blend of spirituality, adventure, and personal discovery.

The Camino starts in Porto, the second largest city in Portugal after Lisbon and one of the major urban areas of the Iberian Peninsula. But before you leave and start your journey, you should take your time to taste the famous port and Douro wines, the city's charming architecture and many sights, such as the tower of Clerigos, the amazing Livraria Lello, the old quarters of Baixa with its local shops, restaurants and pastry shops, Ribeira - a quarter by the river Douro facing the wine cellars in Gaia - and other areas. Start to ride from Sé cathedral, either following the coastal path or the central path and discover the Minho region's green wines, local gastronomy, roman heritage and where Portugal started to emerge as a country as it is now, in the 12th century, as the county from which the first portuguese King arose, D. Afonso Henriques, is right here in the Minho. Ride towards Spain's Galiza, discovering the celtic heritage, the "tapas", the amazing seafood and brilliant architecture, until you reach Santiago de Compostela and realize that the Camino never actually ends... 😉 Click to know more about our  bike tour from Porto to Santiago de Compostela .

Cycling in Portugal: Azores - São Miguel Island

When to go:  March to October Type of rider:  Intermmediate to Expert Bike type:  Road bike Terrain type:  Mountainous Duration:  5 to 7 days

cycling in Portugal: the azores archipelago

Embarking on a bike tour in the Azores archipelago, crowned the best island destination globally by National Geographic, unfolds an extraordinary adventure for nature enthusiasts. Positioned in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, equidistant between Europe and the USA, the nine Azores islands emerge from the ocean floor's lava outpouring, situated on the tectonic ridge between Eurasia and North America. The subtropical climate, evergreen fields adorned with lush pastures, vibrant flowers, and endemic flora and fauna create a perfect haven for cycling enthusiasts seeking a challenging expedition in one of the world's most unique and picturesque destinations.

São Miguel, the largest and most renowned island in the Azores, stands out as the comprehensive cycling destination within the archipelago. Here, cyclists traverse immensely scenic and impeccably maintained asphalt roads, passing dormant volcanoes, captivating lagoons, tropical forests, and thermal and sulfur springs. The journey includes climbs to breathtaking viewpoints in Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo, complemented by stays in premier hotels and thermal resorts across São Miguel.

For experienced trail and mountain bikers, São Miguel's trails present an enticing yet demanding terrain, with steep climbs accentuating this volcanic paradise. While walking or cycling on the roads offers a comprehensive island experience, it's important to note that this destination is not for beginners. A road bike loop from Ponta Delgada to Lagoa das Sete Cidades can accumulate around 1500m of total ascent. Climbing to Lagoa do Fogo can easily add another 2000m of total ascent to your ride. Despite the challenges, the unparalleled views make every climb worthwhile.

The ideal approach to exploring São Miguel by bike is to use Ponta Delgada, the island's capital, as a base for venturing into the western and central parts of the island. From Ponta Delgada, cyclists can ride to Lagoa das Sete Cidades via "Vista do Rei" or "Lagoa do Canário." Descending into the cauldron's blue and green lakes from these incredible vantage points offers an awe-inspiring cycling experience. For those seeking a less hilly ride, venturing towards the northern side to Santa Bárbara, Rabo de Peixe, or Ribeira Grande provides a captivating alternative in this cycling paradise.

To explore the eastern part of the island, we suggest riding towards "Furnas", a local thermal resort where you get to experience hot thermal springs, while surrounded by sub-tropical nature - you can ride by the coastline for a less hilly ride or, if you want to make it a big day on the saddle, go all the way up to Lagoa do Fogo - a truly epic climb, topped by an amazing view point - before reaching Furnas. From Furnas, you can ride to "Salto do Cavalo" viewpoint, Nordeste, Povoação and others. These are all tough rides, but it will make it even more special to recover in the hot thermal springs afterwards. Also, make sure you mix your cycling with other activities throught your stay - you'll find São Miguel to be a great destination for nature tourism, as you can join a whale watch tour to watch sperm and blue whales, walk the trails along the volcanoes, the lagoons and hot springs, surrounded by the deep blue color of the ocean and the almost fluorescent green of the pastures and forested areas, visit the only tea plantations iavailable in Europe. The island's trademark gastronomy, based on the tender meats and stews, the amazing fresh fish and seafood that are abundant in this part of the Ocean, as well as the surprisingly good white wines, local cheese and sweet pastries are really worht it too. Cycling in Portugal: Lisbon’s magical Sierras: Sintra and Arrábida

When to go: April to October Type of rider: Intermmediate to Expert Bike type: Mountain, road or hybrid bike Terrain type: Hilly Duration: half-day to 2 days

road cycling in Portugal: Arrabida Sierra

The capital of Portugal, Lisbon, is a beautiful city with more than 2.7 million inhabitants, which makes it the 11th most populated city in Europe. Despite the perfect mixture out of city and beaches, Lisbon is also famous for their rich culture, their local food, their beautiful buildings and the pulsating nightlife. The Castle of Sao Jorge, the Bairro Alto and the Terreiro de Paço are just a few must sees in Portugal's capital. But regarding cycling, the best areas to ride are outside of Lisbon, in the Sintra sierra, north of Lisbon and near Cascais, or the Arrábida Sierra. Both are Natural parks and offer amazing viewpoints, great tarmac roads and bike trails. Sintra is famous for its Moorish ruins, Pena Castle, Quinta da Regaleira and it's luxurious vegetation, making way for narrow roads and trails across it's sierra that overlooks the atlantic ocean, in which you get to ride to Roca Cape, continental Europe's westernmost point.

Arrabida is well known for it's quaint villages, the vineyards, views over Tróia Peninsula and cristaline water beaches like Portinho da Arrábida where you can end your ride by the beach and fresh fish and Azezitão wines. You can explore both regions on road bikes or mountain bikes ( there are great rails and roads in both sierra). To reach Sintra from Lisbon, the best way is to take the train up to the historial center train station, to avoid Lisbon's marginal which is busy with traffic.

To reach Arrábida, the best option is also by train, leaving in Azeitão or Setúbal - you can take your bike in both trains. If you have more than one day in Lisbon, make sure to ride in both Sierras ( and let us know which one you like best, we can't figure that out ourselves). What to Expect on Your N2 Cycle Tour of Portugal

Our N2 tours run in late spring and autumn (fall). These are the best seasons for cycling in Portugal. Of course the weather will vary between the north and the coastal south.

From March to May, the country is in bloom and waking after the winter. In May you can expect daytime temperatures between 17 C and 24 C. May is generally a sunny month with low rainfall. Of course the weather will vary between the north and the coastal south.

From September to October the sun is still shining, the weather is warm, and many of the crowds have dispersed. In September you can expect temperatures between 19 C and 29 C. September is generally a sunny month with low rainfall.

Group Size and Tour Leaders

Our groups are generally around 12 to 18 people. All our Portugal tours go ahead with a minimum of six people.

Our groups are supported by a tour leader and assistant, both of whom have previous tour support experience and are themselves cyclists who fully appreciate just how it feels however your day pans out. The tour leader and assistant ride in the van to better aid a speedy assist where required. On most tours we also have a rider on the road with basic mechanical and first aid skills who will try to ride ‘mid-pack’, but the van generally gets there first.

At the initial briefing all cyclists are provided with the tour leader and assistant’s number, as well as that of the emergency services which they are instructed to use in the event of an emergency.

English is fairly widely spoken in the larger towns in Portugal and where possible we will have Portugese speakers available to assist.

Camaraderie

Camaraderie forms a big part of the whole experience our tours provide and although single supplements are available, our tours are priced and catered for such that a single cyclist can feel comfortable making a booking and opt to share a twin room with someone they don’t know.

People tend to settle into their own way of cycling throughout the day and groups can vary from day to day and evening to evening. You can cycle at your own pace for a solitary cycle or join others.

We recommend you bring a bike computer onto which you can upload the GPX files of the route. GPX files of the Portugal N2 route will be emailed to you before the start of the tour.

We will also email route profile sheets to help with finding your way.

Direction of Travel

We travel north to south. The prevailing wind is westerly.

Bike Maintenance

Each morning (and evening) bike cleaning materials, basic tools, pumps and lubricants will be available so you can groom your trusty steeds.

You can telephone any time for mechanical support where required.

Mechanical Issues

With regards to mechanical issues it’s helpful if everyone knows how to repair a puncture or replace a tube. However, we are on call if you need help re-seating a stiff tyre on the rim.

Minor mechanicals can be dealt with roadside and where more specialist help is required we can transport you and your bike to a local bike shop to carry out repairs.

Support Van & Cyclist

Our support van with water and refreshments will pass you at least once each morning and afternoon en route to lunch and hotel so you will normally be able to access your day pack before lunch, at lunch and in the afternoon.

We usually have a Support Cyclist on the road as well.

In the afternoon we ensure we get your bag to the hotel before you arrive.

Daily Routine

Every day starts with a hearty breakfast and a briefing.

Breakfasts vary but for the most part will include cereals, fruit, eggs in various guises, cheeses, meats and breads with coffee, juice and tea.

We’ll advise of a suitable morning coffee stop for ‘second breakfast’ and we’ll also specify a lunch stop where the van can be found. Sometimes there will be a choice of restaurant but in remote areas there may only be one suitable.

Evening meals are available in some of our Portugal hotels. We do however advise a little walk each evening just to sample the delights these towns have to offer.

Have a question?

A bike tour in Alentejo is like stepping into the past, where rolling countryside, olive groves, vineyards, and cork trees reign supreme.

Experience the quiet charm of cycling through the Alentejo region of Portugal as you discover an old-world way of life. It's the heartland of the world's cork production, still harvested by hand at the same steady pace that's been followed for generations. Unpack and unwind at one luxurious hotel for your entire bike tour, ensuring relaxation at the end of each day. Savor slow food cuisine, exquisite local wines, and cycle to historic towns like UNESCO-listed Évora, with its ancient Roman temples, city walls, and bath ruins. Here, time seems to pause, and the hustle and bustle of everyday life are long forgotten.

This trip was spectacular from the beginning to the end. All guides, all rides, all meals, all activities. Well thought out and planned.

Susan, Trek Travel Guest

Group of people standing in front of the church and smiling

Thank you for another great experience. Some of our biking buddies did their own home-grown rides in Portugal while we were on the Trek trip, and they acknowledged the Trek trip looked a lot more fun.

The dining experiences were amazing. The vineyard tour and dinner on the last night was unforgettable, gorgeous and so special. I felt so privileged to spend the evening there.

Sylvia, Trek Travel Guest

Rider

Every meal out as a group was well thought out and enhanced our experience, from the opening dinner in town with local wine and food to the final closing. The lunch in Elvas with the incredible view was fabulous, with well selected food. The dinner in Estremoz was incredible, with the highest quality food and presentation. And the final closing dinner with wine tour, bit of cooking on the estate, and seating at the most elaborate table with wonderful service was a lovely closing touch.

Candace, Trek Travel Guest

Three people walking on the streets of Monsaraz

Both the tour of Evora and the tour of the cork estate were wonderful. The history of the region was central to the enjoyment and awe of the spaces we visited. Meeting and enjoying the people of the region enriched our time there.

Additional Arrival Information

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS). Public transportation is inexpensive and easy to use from the airport. You can take the Metro with a one-way ticket for 1.90€ or the daily pass (which allows you to use the metro, bus, trams, and trains) for 6€. More information can be found at www.metro.transporteslisboa.pt . Alternatively, taxis are plentiful and cost approximately 15-25 Euros to Lisbon center.

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the bakery A Padaria Portuguesa (Rua Mouzinho da Silveira 2, 1250-042 Lisbon) at 10:00 AM on the first day of the trip. You'll then shuttle approximately two hours to your retreat oasis for the week. Please have your first-day cycling clothes and riding gear easily accessible, separate from your luggage. After a light lunch of local delights on the patio of the hotel, your guides will fit and familiarize you with your bike for the week and speak to the specifics of cycling in the area before taking to the roads of Alentejo.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Alentejo Marmoris Hotel and Spa (+351 268 887 010), and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. A taxi from Lisbon to the first hotel will take about two hours and cost around 200 euros.

Additional Departure Information

You will say farewell to your guides at 11:00 AM at the Alentejo Marmoris Hotel and Spa in Vila Viçosa, Portugal. You will shuttle approximately two hours to the Lisbon Portela Airport to arrive around 1:00 PM. Please do not schedule a flight out before 2:30 PM on the last day of the trip to allow plenty of time for any unforeseen delays. If you are staying in Lisbon, the shuttle will also stop in the centre of the town at A Padaria Portuguesa (Rua Mouzinho da Silveira 2, 1250-042 Lisbon).

Lisbon, known as the city of seven hills, is the capital city of Portugal overflowing with great café culture, music, art, and gratuitous history. You'll be enchanted by the narrow, cobbled streets and white washed walls, ochre roofs, and colourful splashes of ceramic tiles. Be sure to walk the streets of some of the many storied neighbourhoods and certainly don't pass up a pastéis de nata, Portugal's mouthwatering custard tart. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre- and post-trip hotel:

Packing and Weather

The south central region of Alentejo sees favorable temperatures year round, but spring and fall are the best time to visit with average 70-80 degree highs (21-26ºC) and lows of 50-55 degrees (10-12ºC). Mornings and evenings in fall can be cooler so make sure to pack layers. Rain is infrequent but there is always a chance for a shower so don’t forget your rain gear to assure you comfort while riding. View our Packing List

Your booking will be finalized once your no-risk deposit is paid. If you make a reservation more than 90 days prior to the trip, a $750 no risk deposit is due at the time of booking.** If you reserve your trip less than 90 days prior to the departure, the full balance is due at the time of booking. Once your booking is complete you will receive an email confirmation with important information pertaining to your trip.

*Please note that select trips cannot be booked online at this time. For those trips, please call a trip consultant at 866-464-8735.

**Deposit amounts vary for all Race, Cross Country, Special Edition, Ride Camp, Discover, and Self-Guided tours. Please confirm deposit amounts for all trips with your Trip Consultant at time of booking.

What happens once I book?

When a trip is booked, a guest confirmation email is immediately sent out. One week prior to the trip start, you’ll receive an email containing your trip start meeting location reminder and any last-minute information that you’ll need to know. You will also receive instructions to download the Ride with GPS app before your trip to provide you the day to day plan and daily route guides.

Guaranteed to run

With one person booked on a date, the trip becomes guaranteed.*

In the case where trips are at one or two guests, we will contact you prior to final payment to give you the following options:

Pay a small trip fee of $500 per person for two guests or $1000 for one guest, which ensures your preferred trip date will run. If there are three or more guests before departure date, the fee will be refunded in full.

Switch to a different trip or different departure date. Should there be any difference in trip price between your original trip and the new one, you will be expected to pay the difference, or we will refund you accordingly.

Offer only valid if Trek Travel contacts a guest to discuss these specific options. Bike trips with fewer than three guests may operate with only one guide. The guide will support all rides with a Trek Travel van. If you would like to discuss the option of having two guides, please speak with your trip consultant.

The small trip supplement for Ride Camps is as follows – for two guests an additional $250 or for one guest an additional $500.

*Cross Country, Discover, Race, and Special Edition trips as well as a small number of select departures have a minimum guest count to guarantee. Please check with your Trip Consultant for more information.

Unforeseen events may make it necessary to cancel or modify a trip. Our Guest Services team will update you with any changes. We reserve the right to cancel departures in cases of force majeure or the failure of third parties—such as hotels—to honor their reservations, in which case all payments received to date will be refunded, which constitutes full settlement. Trek Travel is not responsible for expenses incurred in preparation for any canceled trips, such as airline tickets, or for costs that are incurred due to travel delays, flight cancellations, or illness. Straight Talk

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

The slower pace, relaxed approach to life and old-world qualities in Portugal are some of the highlights of this spectacular region and are reflected in the hotels and restaurants on this trip. This said, service can lack a sense of urgency when compared with the service found in other parts of Europe. Additionally, while the Premiere hotels we've chosen are some of the finest in the country, they may seem a bit simpler than the Backroads European standard. The same can be said for Portuguese cuisine, which is traditionally a celebration of local flavors but is also bit more rustic than other places we visit in Europe.

The best months to plan a bike tour in Portugal

  • February 18, 2021 10:14 am
  • Portugal Bike Tours

By José Neves

Once I heard someone saying that “Spring time in Portugal starts in January!” Wow… In fact, we were cycling under a deep blue sky and the temperature was pretty nice for January!

In March, everybody rides a bicycle enjoying the sunny days. Snow is not common: you can only see snow in the northern mountainous regions. Portugal is an excellent place for cycling.

Portugal is one of two countries in the Iberian Peninsula. This is one of the south regions in Continental Europe, therefore it is a hot and dry region.

Some say September and October!

September and into October are good times to plan a bike tour in Portugal. The temperature is not so hot and it is warm enough to feel good outside. In Autumn you can cycle in Portugal taking in the gorgeous scenery with the yellow and brown fields along the way.

I prefer the Spring time!

In my personal opinion, the best time to go cycling in Portugal it’s Spring time! Definitely! As of the second half of March until the first half of June the flowers are blooming and the fields are covered with wild flowers of different colors.

So, what is the best time to plan a bike tour in Portugal

From early March to late June, the energy in the air invites us to cycle and the sun feels nice and not too warm, temperatures during the day are around 18ºC and 26ºC (64ºF and 80ºF), depending on the region of Portugal and the month.

Also, from September until the first half of November it is a good time of the year to plan a bike tour in Portugal. The heat is not so intense as in the end of June until August (35ºC/95ºF), and the rain usually starts in the second half of November. And there is also beauty in the landscape in the Fall, although as I said I prefer the green and the flowers in the Spring.

December and January are usually colder months, the temperature during the day is usually around 10ºC (50ºF). But when you cycle you generate heat, so we can say that Portugal is an excellent place to ride a bicycle almost all year round.

The southern regions of Portugal, Alentejo and Algarve, are warmer and drier than the northern areas, which are a bit more cool and rainy.

The best advice as to the best time to go cycling in Portugal is to head south, to the Alentejo and Algarve regions during the winter, spring and autumn months. Porto and the North of Portugal are best cycled during the summer months.

Historical weather for Portugal can be searched at wunderground , a Weather Channel and IBM company. Daily and weekly weather forecasts for Portugal can be searched at the Portuguese Weather Institute .

Portugal Bike Tours

Portugal is having its long overdue moment. No longer just the place where Port wine is produced, the Douro Valley won UNESCO World Heritage status in 2001 and is often described as the most beautiful wine region anywhere. With verdant valleys and terraced vineyards that plunge into the Douro River, the viticulture here has evolved into a world-renowned wine industry.

The history of the Alentejo, the south-central region between Lisbon and Spain, is told through the spectrum of structures: ancient megaliths, converted convents, medieval castles, and Roman temples. The cork trade is king here, but the region also yields marble quarries, olive groves, and—of course—rolling vineyards of Touriga, Aragonés, and Arinto grapes.

Called the Hawaii of the Atlantic, the Azorean archipelago is a happy hodgepodge. Pineapple plantations, evocative ocean views, and volcanic slopes check all the expected island boxes. But São Miguel is full of surprises—including a thriving tea industry, a defining dairy trade, and the unexpected ease of reaching this emerging tropical destination.
