The Best Car Coolers and Portable Refrigerators for Your Next Road Trip

Chris Chase

Whether you’re striking out on a two-week camping trip or heading to the beach for a picnic, no outdoor adventure is complete without food and drink. That means you’ll need a cooler to keep your beverages chilled and food fresh. But even the best coolers can only keep things cold for so long. Eventually, your freezer packs will thaw out, and you’ll have to stock up on ice from the nearest gas station or convenience store.

What if there was a better way to keep your consumables cold without worrying about ice melting? Well, there is, and that’s by using an electric car cooler. These handy devices have a lot in common with the cooler you probably already have packed away with your camping gear. The difference is you can plug an electric cooler into your vehicle’s 12-volt power outlet, which will keep the things inside cool without the aid of ice. You can even use some of the more powerful electric coolers to make ice while you’re on the road or at the campground.

Some car coolers can do double duty and keep food warm, too, so you can be everyone’s best friend when you arrive at a fall picnic or backyard potluck with piping hot chili. You’ll find a lot of variety in the car cooler marketplace in terms of functionality and price.

For more information on the best car coolers and portable refrigerators for your car, refer to our table of contents.

If you are in the market for a feature-rich portable fridge, look no further than the BougeRV CRPRO25. This 26-quart fridge/freezer is an ideal companion for your next road trip. It comes with an adjustable temperature setting that lets you set the temperature anywhere from -8 degrees Fahrenheit to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This means you can use it is a freezer to keep meat and ice cream frozen, or you can use it as a fridge to keep your drinks cool.

Designed to operate quietly, the BougeRV CRPRO25 is outfitted with a user-friendly smart panel to make temperature adjustments, bright interior light, exterior bottle opener, and four tie-down points. But what really sets it apart is a multi-functional storage box which has room for a portable power bank. With the portable power bank installed, you can keep the CRPRO25 running without plugging it into a power source.

Speaking of power, the BougeRV CRPRO25 consumes 45W in MAX mode and just 36W in ECO mode. It also boasts a three-level car battery protection system to help protect your car battery from draining when the voltage is low.

You can save 30% off of a BougeRV CRPRO25 is you use the code BJ30 at checkout.

None of the coolers on our list illustrate the phrase “you get what you pay for” better than this option from ICECO. You’ll pay more for this product, but for your money, you get a cooler that promises better performance and longevity than many other portable powered coolers.

This is a versatile cooler, boasting the flexibility to run on 12- or 24-volt DC current or 110- or 240-volt AC household power. While many of the other coolers we selected for our list are capable of keeping food and drinks chilled or frozen, this recommendation can be set to maintain a temperature anywhere between -7 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit. That means you can easily chill or freeze food that’s at room temperature when you load it up without space-hogging ice or freezer packs.

ICECO equips this cooler with a Secop compressor for fast cooling. You can also run this cooler in an eco mode that consumes less electricity and prolongs run time when you’re powering it with a battery.

With your purchase, ICECO includes an insulated protective bag and a 12-foot-long DC power cable. The compressor is warrantied for five years, and everything else is covered by a one-year warranty.

While its price won’t be suited to every budget, Setpower's option gets a nod from us for its 53-quart capacity, the most generous of any of the items in our list of the best car coolers.

To give you an idea of its size, Setpower says you can pack 70 soda cans, 42 pint-sized water bottles, or 12 wine bottles in the AJ50 variant. A wire storage basket lets you store delicate food separately from hard/heavy items. You can use this recommendation as a fridge/freezer as well as a cooler. Setpower says the compressor is powerful enough to chill or freeze food and drink from room temperature, and you can set the temperature to any point between 0 and 50 degrees F.

A 38-pound weight means you’ll get a bit of a workout moving this cooler around, but it has robust-looking carry handles at either end. Setpower sells this particular cooler with DC (12/24-volt) and AC (110/240-volt) power cables, so you can use this portable cooler at home just as easily as you would in your car or camper. An auto shut-off system with three settings lets you protect your vehicle’s battery when running this cooler with the engine turned off.

Here's our recommendation for a basic cooler if you're shopping on a budget. While the first few items in our list are basically portable fridge-freezer units, this Ivation product is a simpler electric car cooler that will keep your food and drinks cool but not frozen.

This is a dual-power cooler that you can run on a 12-volt DC power source—like your vehicle’s cigarette lighter—or on 110-volt AC current with the included adapter for household outlets. Both adapters stow in convenient compartments built into the lid.

Ivation says this device will keep drinks as cool as 40 degrees F and can also keep food warm up to 130 degrees F. However, those are its only settings; it can’t be set to any temperatures in between those points. The company also says this option will work best if you load it with drinks or food that has already been chilled or warmed up. As some buyers have noted, it will take a long time to cool or heat items from ambient temperature.

While the cooler’s capacity is relatively modest, Ivation says it’s large enough to accommodate 2-liter soda bottles. This cooler weighs 10.6 pounds, so it’s relatively easy to move around even when loaded.

car travel fridge

Designed to look like an old-fashioned home refrigerator, AstroAI’s minifridge is tiny, measuring 10 inches high by 9.45 inches deep and 6.9 inches wide. Its 4-liter internal capacity is just large enough to accommodate six regular-size soda cans, and a weight of fewer than five pounds empty allows for easy transportation.

AstroAI says it designed this little fridge for more than just keeping drinks cold. It’s also ideal for storing cosmetics and skin care products, breast milk, and other items that are perishable at room temperature.

This cooler will take items from room temperature down to 37 degrees F in three hours, and you can also use it to keep food or drink hot at up to 150 degrees F. The company makes it clear this product is not designed to warm things up from ambient temperatures but claims your items will stay warm for hours after the device is turned off. Actual cooling and warming performance will vary somewhat depending on the ambient temperature.

This minifridge ships with a 12-volt DC cigarette lighter cable for use in your vehicle and a 110-volt AC adapter, so you can also plug it in at home or in your office.

car travel fridge

This option from Wagan is another lightweight cooler—it weighs a scant 8.7 pounds empty. Once loaded with food and drink it will obviously be heavier, but the included shoulder strap leaves your hands free for carrying other items.

This cooler’s design lends itself well to serving as a central console in a vehicle’s back seat and includes cupholders so your passengers can enjoy drinks on the road. Its capacity is 14 liters. While it’s advertised as a 12-volt cooler, Wagan sells an optional AC adapter that lets you plug it into a household power outlet. The standard 9-foot-long DC power cable connects to your vehicle’s cigarette lighter.

As with the Ivation cooler discussed above, this Wagan unit works best to keep your items cold or warm but is not designed to efficiently chill or heat your food and drink from room temperature. The company says this cooler's temperature range is 32 degrees F (the freezing point) to 140 degrees F. You can’t select any temperatures between those two points, but changing between cooling and warming modes is as simple as flipping a switch. Simple green and red LED indicators tell you at a glance which mode it is set to.

car travel fridge

The 36-liter Bodega car fridge is pricy, but it's less expensive than our Editor's Pick, yet it has four more liters capacity.

To put this model's capacity in perspective, Bodega claims it will hold 41 cans of cola, 21 bottles of water, or ( somewhat humorously) "13 bottles of red wine." The compressor-chilled cooler will operate on 12 volts from your car's cigarette lighter or power port, but it can also be powered by 120-volt or 240-volt current from a wall outlet. The refrigerated compartment includes a divider and independent temperature control for both areas via a phone app. According to the manufacturer, the contents can be chilled down to 4 degrees Fahrenheit. Wheels, interior lighting, and a drain hole are thoughtful touches.

Bodega offers models with a capacity greater than 36 liters which are correspondingly more expensive. The larger 53-liter Bodega seems to be the most widely available.

There were complaints from a few users; most cited poorly-written instructions. Others found that the unit was slow to cool when full. However, most small-capacity refrigerators perform better when maintaining the temperature of pre-chilled contents rather than chilling warm items, in all the Bodega clocked in with a respectable 85% positive customer rating.

car travel fridge

The 48-quart Koozam K-box electric cooler is one of the larger models reviewed here. It’s a thermoelectric cooler, which will keep pre-chilled items cold but won’t bring warm items down to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Like other similar coolers, it can maintain a warm environment too. A removable interior divider helps keep contents under control.

This model has built-in 6-foot power cords that connect with either 12-volt (cigarette lighter style) or 120-volt supplies. The K-Box weighs 17.1 pounds empty; there are wheels, but given their small size, we think they’re for positioning the cooler rather than rolling it over long distances.

Gripes about slow cooling and difficult maneuverability marred the otherwise favorable user experiences. The K-Box still managed 81% positive reviews. This model is markedly less expensive than the 53-quart Setpower AJ50 reviewed above, which earned an exemplary 91% positive rating.

If you want a cooler that can efficiently chill or freeze food and drink from room temperature, then you should choose one with a compressor, such as one of the products we placed at the top of our list.

A cooler with a compressor is effectively a portable fridge or freezer with proven and effective technology, but you won’t get it for cheap. The compressor itself is heavy, so any cooler equipped with one will be more difficult for you to pick up and move around.

A thermoelectric cooler is a simpler, less-expensive device that uses a scientific phenomenon called the Peltier effect to either generate heat, or absorb it and thereby provide a cooling effect. Thermoelectric cooling is less efficient than a compressor-based system, so it won’t do as good a job keeping your food chilled as a compressor-type cooler will. However, a thermoelectric cooler will be much less expensive than one with a compressor.

Yes, but whether you need to depends on the type of cooler you buy. If you choose one with a compressor-based cooling system, you won’t need to pack your food and drink in ice as these coolers are designed to be effective at chilling things down and keeping them at a set temperature.

However, if you buy a thermoelectric cooler, we recommend chilling or freezing your food and drinks ahead of time and then packing it in the cooler and turning it on. You can also pack your items in ice and the thermoelectric cooler function will keep the ice frozen for longer than in a regular cooler.

You can run an electric cooler plugged into your vehicle for as long as you want, so long as the vehicle is running, which keeps the battery charged.

When your vehicle is off, be careful not to leave the cooler running for too long because it will drain the battery after two to three hours, which can leave you stranded as the battery may not have enough power left in it to start the engine.

As far as your cooler is concerned, there isn’t much difference. All of these coolers in our list are designed to operate on 12-volt automotive DC power. The ones that can be plugged into a household outlet have adapters, like the one you use to plug a laptop computer into the wall to convert your home’s 110-volt AC power to the DC current the cooler requires.

Cars do not have cigarette lighters anymore. Need coolers with USB for keeping them cold

David Traver Adolphus

Very few cars have lighters (although there are a few where it's still an option), but every car we've seen has the 12V port where a lighter once went, and most car accessories are powered with a 12V adaptor. The USB ports in most cars don't have enough power to run something like a cooler. USB-C is capable of much higher power delivery, but it hasn't been widely adopted in vehicles yet.

Coleman 40-Quart Thermoelectric Cooler

Honorable Mention

Coleman 40-quart thermoelectric cooler, our picks: best portable electric coolers you can buy.

So which one do you choose? The first step is establishing why you need a portable electric cooler. If you just want something to keep sandwiches edible on a road trip, thermoelectric is just fine. If you need to freeze fresh meat after a hunting trip or keep frozen food frozen until you arrive at your destination, you'll want a compressor cooler.

For this test, we picked out seven of the top portable electric coolers on the market. We collected both objective and subjective data on a variety of parameters to arrive at our conclusions. Bear in mind that most of these coolers are available in multiple sizes, so our notes on internal size are more for general storage expectations.

Without further ado, here are our Electric Cooler picks.

How We Tested Portable Electric Coolers

We used a combination of practical observations and hard data for this test. Using an army of Bluetooth thermometers, boxes of evenly sized soda and beer cans, and an average-size Kia Sorento, we set to work. Here are the parameters we tested:

  • Cooling efficiency/time

Upon gathering our data and testing notes, we set to work deciding which coolers were the best for certain situations. Here are our picks for the best electric coolers.

For most of us, this 28-quart cooler from Igloo nailed the sweet spot. The thermoelectric powerplant provides cooling power to 36 degrees Fahrenheit below the ambient temperature and can also heat the inside up to 136 degrees Fahrenheit. This flexibility allows you to keep cold things cold and hot things hot. It’s the best of both worlds.

The Igloo lacks a freezer function, but the attractive price point reflects that. The design isn’t anything impressive, but it’s what Igloo is known for: functional and durable. The small size is perfect for road trippers and truckers—it fits just about anywhere in the vehicle, even the front floorboard—and the price is undeniably great, which is why we picked it as the Best Compact Electric Cooler . We wish it had an alternate power source besides its 12-volt cig-lighter plug, but there are plenty of affordable DC to AC adapters available at Amazon .

Specifications

The electric car coolers/freezers in this test vary wildly in price, but this Alpicool 48-quart entry held its own against the more expensive options. It boasts a healthy capacity, holding 59 soda cans (without the internal basket). The cooler comes with 12-volt and 120-volt power cords, so you can pre-cool it at home, keep it cooling on the road, and plug it in when you arrive at your destination.

The Alpicool didn't get as cold as some of the others we tested (see graph below), but it was definitely cold enough to keep frozen items frozen. This is a great choice.

The Anker EverFrost 40L is unlike any other cooler on this list. In addition to being able to be plugged into your vehicle for cooling on the road, it also features a built-in 299Wh battery that can power the cooler even when it’s unplugged.

This means you can keep your items chilling even when your car is turned off without draining your vehicle’s battery. It also means you can take the cooler to a tailgate party or beach and keep your food and drinks cold all day long. How long the removable battery can power the cooler varies greatly based on ambient temperature, the temperature you set it to, and whether or not it was pre-chilled beforehand while plugged into the wall or vehicle, but with an ambient temperature of 78-degrees, our EverFrost unit kept 65 cans at 36-degrees for around 32 hours.

When plugged into a standard AC wall outlet, the unit took just 28 minutes to get from 71-degrees to 32-degrees using its integrated compressor. When doing the same test with battery power, it took 36 minutes and used 26-percent of the battery. So, if you want to maximize how long the battery will last, be sure to pre-chill it using power from your vehicle or wall outlet.

Speaking of power, the battery can charge through USB-C and a 100W XT-style connection. This XT connector will work with the car charger, wall charger, and even solar panels with the appropriate output or adapter. Anker sells its own solar panels, but any brand should work so long as you convert it to the appropriate male XT connector. The battery will also charge passively via the car and wall charging input that’s on the bottom of the cooler.

Other cool features include extra USB-A and USB-C charging ports on the battery for charging your mobile devices, as well as a fold-out “EasyTow” handle that doubles as a surface for cutting or holding items.

We tested the 40L model, but there’s also a smaller 30L model and a larger dual-zone 50L model with two areas that can be independently cooled.

For the tailgater who wants to bring all the goodies, this 80-quart Bodega beast is our pick. Featuring two internal zones that can be independently controlled, it's the ultimate extra-large electric cooler/freezer. The 80-quart combined capacity is handy too, allowing us to cram in 102 soda cans.

This cooler/freezer won't be for every driver, as the size makes it unwieldy and difficult to store. But if you have the room, it's the perfect tool to transform a tailgate party.

One of the industry leaders in portable cooling and refrigeration, Dometic is renowned for its RV air conditioners. That said, if you want to splurge on a top-of-the-line electric cooler/freezer to take along in your car or truck, this is the one you want. It reached the coldest temps in our test (see graph below) by a good margin. It's extremely well built, featuring spring-loaded handles, an easy-to-use interface, and a sturdy hinge.

Temperature control is accessible through an app, and the option to power it by a separate solar panel opens it up for use off the grid. Yes, it's pricey, but well worth the money.

If you're looking for a great deal on a portable electric car freezer, you've found it. We really liked the compact size of the BougeRV ; its dimensions are ideal for road trips in small cars. (Again, most of these portable coolers come in multiple sizes; which one you need is up to you.) As far as performance, the BougeRV was comparable with our Best Budget Cooler listed above but came up just short with its insulation; once unplugged, it lost its internal temp just a tad faster than the Alpicool. But it costs about a hundred bucks less, and Alpicool doesn't make a model that's this compact.

A fantastic option for a road-trip freezer, it performed well in our vehicle space test; it'll fit just about anywhere. If you need to keep frozen items from melting in a compact space, this is the portable cooler to get.

If you're looking for a larger thermoelectric cooler, this one from Coleman worked really well. It's about a third larger than the Igloo for just a bit more money. Better yet, it can be stored with the lid up (like in the photo) or on its side with the lid facing out, like a mini-fridge. Note, though, that it's not a freezer.

If you want the heating and cooling abilities of a thermoelectric cooler with a bit more internal space, this is the one to get.

How We Tested Electric Coolers

best electric coolers tested graph

Managing the temptation to test these coolers by drinking beer around the fire was our biggest challenge during this test. But to maintain our quest for objective data for your purchasing needs, we opted for thermometers, a Kia Sorento, and some same-size beverage cans (unopened).

When considering the parameters for our cooler test, we used the following parameters:

  • Insulation: How well does it keep the temperature
  • Space: Where does it fit in the car?
  • Capacity: How many cans fit in the cooler?
  • Design: What features add to or subtract from the cooler?

Using the Govee Home Thermometer System , we ran our first test on cooling and efficiency . Assigning each cooler a thermometer, we started each at 71 degrees and turned each to its lowest setting, measuring the time it took to get there. The Govee app provides exportable data, demonstrating both the cooling and insulation properties of each unit, allowing us to build this handy graph.

To determine the baseline behavior, we measured cooling and insulation while empty. As a note, all of these manufacturers suggest priming the cooler—cooling them the night before any big road trip with a 120-volt AC power cord (if you need one, such as with the Igloo, you can buy an adapter here ), then maintaining the cold with your car's 12-volt DC car plug.

Next, we pulled out Car and Driver 's Kia Sorento to investigate the size and storage for each unit. Starting with the trunk and moving forward, we checked each row of seats and the cargo hold for possible easy-access storage space. Lastly, we verified the manufacturer's capacity claim, testing just how many standard 12-ounce soda cans fit into each cooler.

During our tests, our team moved these coolers around . . . a lot—giving us a great idea of just how these coolers adapt in real-life situations. Finally, we took notes on design features like portability, the handles, the wheels, interior baskets or accessories, and whether or not each was cumbersome to haul.

Things to Consider When Shopping for an Electric Cooler

best electric coolers tested in suv between seats

Capacity: Consider the size of your electric cooler. You'll want to ensure that your selection can adequately fit the amount of food and beverages you need for your trip.

Power Source: Electric coolers typically operate on AC power, DC power, and/or an external source like a power pack . Sometimes all three! Consider what your trip will look like and the power sources you have available.

Portability: Look for features like carrying handles, low weight, wheels, and a compact design, making your cooler easy to transport.

Thermoelectric vs. Compressor: Compressor coolers work in any outside temperature, but thermoelectrics are severely affected by it. The hotter the ambient temp, the worse the performance. This is why most thermoelectric cooler manufacturers don't provide a maximum cooling temp—it's defined by the ambient temperature. If you want your thermoelectric cooler to work the best, make sure it's operating away from any ambient heat.

To that end, if you live in a hot, arid environment, or are driving through one on your road trip, avoid thermoelectric coolers altogether—unless you plan on using yours within the vehicle cabin and not in the trunk or truck bed.

Temperature Control: Many electric coolers have built-in temperature-control features allowing you to adjust and maintain desired cooling levels. Some coolers (usually thermoelectric models) have a single cold setting that keeps items cool, but not at a customizable temperature setting.

Additional features: Some coolers offer additional features that can enhance convenience such as removable dividers, built-in lights, and integrated USB ports for charging devices. Consider these extra features based on your specific needs.

What is a portable electric cooler?

A portable electric cooler is a smaller appliance that keeps food and drinks cold (and sometimes warm). They can be plugged into a 120-volt AC wall outlet, the 12-volt cigarette lighter outlet in your car, and/or to a portable power source. Each model will have different power sources, so research your needs and pick up an adapter or power inverter if you need to.

How do I use a portable electric cooler?

To get the best out of your electric cooler, you should prime it the night before your trip. Plug it into your 120-volt wall outlet and begin the cooling process. Once it's down to your desired temperature, transfer refrigerated items into the cooler. This way, your portable cooler is maintaining a cold temperature, which is far more efficient and uses less power than cooling down items.

What are some differences between thermoelectric coolers and compressor coolers?

Compressor coolers use the same technology as your home refrigerator, cooling through a series of compressed air and refrigerants. They are definitely more effective in cooling and are ideal for drivers who need to keep items at a consistent temperature.

Thermoelectric coolers use "solid-state cooling," meaning there is no compressor or refrigerants. It uses the transfer of heat or cold through solid metal to run the device. Thermoelectric cooling is incredibly effective, but it does depend on the ambient temperature in which the cooler is operating. For example, if you are trying to run your cooler in the middle of the desert sun, the solid metal plate may have a hard time cooling since the original transfer begins at such a high temperature.

Are electric coolers noisy?

Not really. Some electric coolers can produce a low humming sound when in use.

Can electric coolers be used while driving?

Yes, a 12-volt DC power outlet can power most electric coolers—but be sure to check what the product offers.

Can I use an electric cooler while the car is off?

Yes, but be mindful that the cooler is powered by your car's battery. Run it too long, and the car's battery might drain completely. Luckily, many electric coolers produce a "low voltage" alert, which lets you know when the vehicle's battery is getting dangerously low.

How long do electric coolers stay cold?

This is dependent on many factors, such as ambient temp, insulation, and contents. In general, as long as your cooler is plugged in, it will remain cool. An unplugged cooler, however, will lose temperature at different rates.

Can electric coolers freeze food and drinks?

Some electric coolers have a freeze function that can lower the temperature inside the cooler below the freezing point.

Cooluli 15l mini fridge.

"Portable refrigerators are another new-ish product that can make road and camping trips more comfortable and convenient," says Dan DiClerico , the director of the Home Improvement & Outdoor Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute . Some models have a power cord that plugs into a standard 110/120V AC outlet, meaning you’ll need a portable generator if you want to take them on the road, while others use 12-volt DC power that can be plugged into your car’s lighter. There are also battery-powered portable refrigerators.

But whichever option you choose, don’t expect the same cooling power as the fridge in your kitchen. "Typical fridges you'd find in your kitchen today have better insulation and sealing and use more efficient compressor motors and refrigerants," says Rachel Rothman , the GH Institute's chief technologist and executive technical director.

You can find more information on what to look for when shopping for a portable refrigerator at the bottom of this guide. Interested in more cool content? Check out our reviews of the best backpack coolers , adult lunchboxes and standard coolers .

With two separate spaces for storing food at two different temperatures and a whopping 63-quart capacity, this portable refrigerator from ICECO is a great option for avid campers, beachgoers, picnickers and road-trippers (as long as you have a dedicated power source, of course.) It also comes with two wire baskets that fit within the two compartments, as well as an insulated cover and an interior light. If you choose to power the cooler from your car battery, it has a car battery-protection mode that helps prevent it from completely draining the battery.

"The impressive cooling range of the compressor is more in line with what we see with full-size refrigerators and the generous five-year warranty shows how the brand stands by its durability and design," says DiClerico. The size does come at a cost though (aside from the steep price tag): At 65 pounds, it is rather heavy and might require two people to carry.

Large portable refrigerators and coolers can get really expensive, but this pick from Coleman is at a great price for its size. According to the brand, it has the capacity to hold 44 cans and its versatile design allows you to use it as a chest, or flip it upright to use as a refrigerator . The cord for the 12V plug in is 8 feet long, so it can reach the middle or back seat of your car, depending on the make and model.

Note that while it does chill the contents, it's dependent on the ambient temperature around the cooler. It can only chill the contents 40° lower than the outside temperature. So keep in mind that the fridge might not reach food-safety standards, depending on the outside temperature. Conversely, it can also be used to keep food warm.

All of the picks on this list — as well as most of the portable refrigerators on the market — run using DC or AC cords, which means they need to be plugged in and stay plugged in. But this 50-quart pick from SetPower can also be powered by a rechargeable battery, so you have the freedom to venture away from outlets (for a certain amount of time, at least), making it a good portable refrigerator for camping.

According to the brand, the battery can keep the refrigerator running for up to eight hours, under ideal conditions. "Today’s lithium-ion batteries have gotten so much better in terms of charge and run times, and they also last much longer than earlier rechargeable batteries," says DiClerico. The cooler also has car battery protection, so you can charge the battery without worrying about draining your car's and leaving you stranded in need of a jump.

There's also a spot to wirelessly charge your phone on top and a USB port, though note that charging any other devices will affect the overall battery life of the refrigerator. It also does take a while to fully charge the battery, so make sure to plug it in overnight to it give it ample time to charge. Another big plus: The telescoping handle and durable six-inch wheels mean you can roll it with ease, no matter how much you've packed inside.

Two words: Cup. Holders. Perfect for car-trip enthusiasts, this little car cooler can sit in the middle of seats to act as a console . According to the brand, it can hold 12 12-ounce cans. It also comes with a carrying strap for easy transport from the car when you reach your destination. It plugs into your car's 12V outlet (the little round one you can stick a car phone charger in) and the six-foot cord can reach to the middle or back seat too. Note that this is a more of a powered cooler and not a refrigerator: The temperature of the cooler is dependent on the outside temperature. It can cool 32° to 36° below the outside temp, so if you want to keep food safe under 40° F, you'll want to add ice packs or use a proper refrigeration device. It does keep food warm too. According to the brand it can heat up to 140° and has an indicator light so you know what temperature mode is in use at a glance.

This small portable refrigerator from Cooluli is great for keeping a few drinks or skincare products close and cool . According to online reviews (there are over 5K five-star reviews on Amazon), it can hold up to six cans of soda. The door is glass, so you can write or draw using dry-erase markers. It also comes in a smaller size and a few different colors as well. Something to note: The temperature is dependent on the ambient temperature of the room, which means it might not keep a low enough temperature to reach food safety standards. It also warms, which could be great for keeping cups of coffee or tea warm at your bedside or at a desk.

How we choose the best portable refrigerators

line break

Here at the Good Housekeeping Institute , we've done extensive evaluations on refrigerators, running tests on over 50 fridges over the past decade to determine the best refrigerator brands and mini fridges . Similarly, we've tested products across the entire outdoor category to assess the top picks in camping gear , camping stoves and tents .

Though we haven't run full category testing on portable refrigerators, we've leveraged our expert knowledge and scoured online reviews, available technical data and user manuals to determine which options are the most promising. Our experts also looked at portable refrigerators that are highly rated and reviewed online.

What to look for when shopping for a portable refrigerator

line break

✔️ Temperature regulation: Not all portable refrigerators are equal in their ability to keep food cool. Some act more like a typical refrigerator with a temperature range, while others can only cool a set amount of degrees lower than the outside ambient temperature. What does this mean exactly?

If a product claims that it can cool 40° below the outside ambient temperature and it happens to be 90° outside, then the product is only ever going to get as cool as 50°. Keep this in mind when shopping, especially if you intend on storing food. According to the USDA , food needs to be kept below 4o° or above 140° in order to be safe to consume, and you don't want to mess around with the bacteria that can grow in between those temperatures. Make sure to do a test run with a thermometer to ensure the product can maintain the appropriate temperature before using it to store food. Typically, portable refrigerators that resemble proper refrigerators are compressor-based, like their larger counterparts. Portable refrigerators that depend on the outside temperature tend to be thermoelectric, and usually offer heating as well as cooling.

Note that most of the time, opening the door to these smaller refrigerators can make the temperature rise significantly, so try not to do the whole open-close-open-close dance looking inside the refrigerator. Here's a pro tip to help prevent that from happening: Make a list of everything inside the cooler on a sticky note or piece of paper and fix it to the exterior so you know what's inside without opening the door. Run out of something on the list? Simply cross it off so you know you're out.

✔️ Power source: P ortable refrigerators almost always come with either a DC or AC power cord, and often they come with both. What's the difference between the two? DC stands for direct current, while AC means alternating current. If you plan on mostly using the portable refrigerator in the car, look for a DC cord. If a normal outlet is more practical for your needs, prioritize an AC cord. If you plan on using both or if you don't know what you'll have access to, look for an option that comes with both cords. There are also battery-powered options if you need to be away from a power source for a while.

✔️ Extra features: Like normal coolers, it's about what the portable refrigerator can do for you. Look for easy-carry straps and handles, cup holders, wheels and even phone chargers, depending on your needs and what you're planning on using the portable refrigerator for. ✔️ Size and capacity: Bigger means heavier in this case, so as cool as it is that that one model can hold 100 cans of soda, you're going to be miserable if you have to carry it for any amount of distance. If you need that kind of capacity (say, for large groups), look for wheels or other ways to transport it easily from point A to point B.

What to Consider

Before you start your search for the best car cooler, there are a few key items to keep in mind.

➥ Cooler Type

Here’s a quick breakdown of the most common types of coolers, so you can decipher which one is best for your needs.

  • Roto-molded coolers: This type of cooler is made from a continuous piece of plastic, rather than having separate parts joined together, which results in a more durable cooler that’s leak-resistant. However, roto-molded coolers are typically more expensive and heavier. Roto-molded coolers like the best-selling Yeti Tundra series do look nice though and they hold up extremely well. Even more importantly, they keep food and drinks cold the longest.
  • Soft-shell coolers: Soft coolers like the inexpensive Polar Bear 24-Pack are typically made from nylon, heavy-duty vinyl, or canvas. They are lighter and more portable than their hard-shelled counterparts at the expense of cold retention. On the plus side, they are oftentimes cheaper and still will keep your food and drinks chilled for hours on end.
  • Plug-in coolers: As you’d expect, these coolers, which come from brands like Dometic and ICECO plug in your vehicle's 12- to 24-volt accessory outlet (aka the cigarette lighter) or a 100- to 240-volt AC outlet. Rather than relying on ice for chilling your food and drinks, they have a compressor and basically serve as a mobile refrigerator or freezer. This means you can set a specific temperature to the degree on them.

➥ Size and Volume

When it comes to shopping for a car cooler, bigger isn’t always necessarily better, especially since they're directly correlated with sacrificing cargo space. Typically, small coolers have volumes of less than 25 liters, and midsize coolers range between 35 and 45 liters, but you can even opt for something as large as 65 to 100-plus liters.

I recommend most families get something between the 30- and 45-liter range, but if you want something that’s portable and easy to carry for long stretches, you should consider getting something a little smaller.

➥ Cooling Capability

Ice retention is surely one of the most important characteristics of a soft or hard cooler. However, a number of car coolers plug in and have compressors to keep them cold. Additionally, they oftentimes have precise temperature control.

If you opt for an electric cooler, it’s worth mentioning that some models support dual temperature zones, so you can bring both refrigerated and frozen foods.

➥ Closure System

Some car coolers have removable lids, others use hinges and latches, a lot use zippers, and a few even rely on magnets for keeping them sealed. Closure systems might seem like a small product element to nitpick, but trust me, even the smallest features can be the most annoying. So, we recommend deciding on your cooler’s closure system before picking one out so you can get easy access to a drink or a snack in a pinch.

This is an image

Preferences vary from user to user, but hinged coolers allow for quick and easy access which means an animal or child could easily get into them too, if they aren't latched. Zippers come in handy if you're worried about the cooler spilling and toppling over, but they are trickier to open, and magnetic coolers are less susceptible to leaks, but they require two hands to open.

Check out our seven favorite car coolers that are perfect for your next adventure, no matter where you're off to!

  • Capacity: 35 liters
  • Weight: 37 pounds
  • Dimensions: ‎27.32 L x 15.67 W x 16.02 H inches

There’s a reason why Dometic coolers are the brand of choice among van lifers , RVers , and others who live a more nomadic lifestyle. Simply put, they are durable, efficient, and reliable. Really, the only downside is their expensive price — the cheapest and smallest model will still cost you a pretty penny (~$750).

I recommend you opt for the 35-liter CFX3 model, which will keep your food and drinks cold anytime and anywhere. The car cooler can reach temperatures as low as minus 7 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s insulated extremely well, is built tougher than the competition, and its handles feel robust and make it easier to lug around.

The cooler can run off both 110- or 12-volt power sources, and it consumes between 0.5 and 1 amp each hour (to maintain a temperature of 38 degrees Fahrenheit.) Given its efficiency and precise temperature control, you can feel confident storing sensitive food items like seafood or even medication.

The CFX3 has a complementary smartphone app to offer users remote controls and a quick but easy way to monitor its internal temperature. A reviewer at Vancillary — who has used a Dometic cooler for over three years now — called the Dometic a “game-changer” and said it’s well worth its high price tag.

  • Dimensions: ‎27.17 L x 13.6 W x 15 H inches

Annoyingly enough, electric car coolers have an incredibly wide price range. Some are even priced as high as $1,500. This option from Euhomy is a lot easier on your wallet and typically costs just under $300 — over three times cheaper than Dometic’s powered coolers. The Euhomy is a dual-zone cooler, which means one side can be used as a refrigerator and the other a freezer.

This option comes in three sizes, ranging from 35 liters up to 55 liters. The cheapest variant offers enough space to stow 36 cans of soda. The cooler is equipped with both 110/240 volt AC and 12/24 volt DC adapters, making it a good option to use both in the car or at home, or in a hotel room. The Euhomy allows users to set its temperature between 4 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

You can even pair it to your smartphone for remote control. The cooler weighs 30 pounds, so it may be a tad heavy for some. It does have handles on its side to ease the burden of carrying it, but unfortunately, they aren’t as large as Dometic’s car coolers.

A note on availability: Due to increased demand, this product may fluctuate between in and out of stock. We will be frequently checking and refreshing the links as it becomes available again. If the Polar Bear is out of stock, we also recommend this soft cooler from AO .

  • Capacity: 10 liters
  • Weight: 4 pounds
  • Dimensions: ‎18 L x 12 W x 10 H inches

This affordable but durable soft cooler offers enough space for 24 cans of soda and 14 pounds of ice while still being narrow enough to store on the floor mat behind your front seat. It’s highly insulated and keeps ice frozen for 24 hours, even in the summertime. It comes in several colors and includes a convenient shoulder strap.

My colleagues at Best Products’ sister site, Good Housekeeping said of the soft coolers they tested , Polar Bear’s coolers performed the best, even just as well as hard coolers. The tester also remarked that it was “very easy to clean.”

  • Capacity: 23 liters
  • Weight: 13 pounds
  • Dimensions: ‎17.5 L x 14 W x 16.5 H inches

The Roadie 24 cooler from Yeti is an excellent option for day trips thanks to its taller and narrower size which makes it ideal for storing it in the backseat of your vehicle. It provides enough space to stack 24 cans and a 10-pound bag of ice. With an internal height of 13 inches, it is also tall enough to accommodate wine- or 2-liter bottles.

When it comes to insulation and ice retention, the Roadie 24 won’t disappoint. During my tests, I pre-chilled the cooler for a few hours before a weekend trip, and it was able to keep my drinks cold for 3 days.

Compared to Yeti’s soft coolers like the Hopper 18, it’s larger and much easier to get in and out of since it doesn’t have a zipper. That’s because its latches can be unhooked easily with one hand. Yeti’s zippers, on the other hand, are quite tight and require two hands to open.

I appreciate that the cooler features rubber feet on its base, which add some friction to keep it stable and prevent it from sliding around. Another nice perk? The Roadie is the perfect height to use as a stool when you need a place to sit while you’re out and about.

As for the not-so-great, I wish that its strap were longer. Unfortunately, it’s not long enough for shoulder carry, and when the cooler is loaded up, it swings around and can easily bump into your shin.

Overall, the Roadie 24 is a small but sturdy cooler that’s solidly constructed and outshines other coolers in ice retention. Its convenient size and shape make it a strong choice for a two-person trip or a day at the beach.

  • Capacity: 60 liters
  • Weight: 56 pounds
  • Dimensions: ‎29.3 L x 19.5 W x 18.8 H inches

The ICECO JP60Pro is one of the most feature-filled car coolers on the market. The cooler is equipped with four cup holders on its top lid, two rulers for measuring fish (one in inches and the other in centimeters), and rubber-like latches to keep it closed.

This 60-Liter cooler offers more than enough space for a family of four and can easily store 60 cans of soda. Given the cooler’s large size — it’s about 30 inches long, 19 inches tall, and weighs 56 pounds — I was happy to see that it has two handles on each side. One pair is rope handles with padded grips, and the other two are located at the lip of the cooler.

On the left side, you’ll find a drain plug at its base for emptying melted ice, and on the opposite side, near the handle, is a convenient bottle opener. Users can easily set (and view) temperature with a side-mounted control panel.

YouTuber Jasonoid remarked that the ICECO is an extremely reliable cooler that did “really well” at regulating its temperature. The car cooler is DC power only, but fortunately, it comes with a DC to AC adapter. You can expect the fridge to pull an average of 1.08 amp-hours per hour which is impressive given its large size.

Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that ICECO includes a cutting board and a useful wire basket to keep food organized. It’s also compatible with a removable set of 6.5-inch wheels at an additional expense, which makes it easier to move.

  • Capacity: 35.6 liters
  • Weight: 23 pounds
  • Dimensions: ‎25.8 L x 16.1 W x 15.4 H inches

The Yeti Tundra 45 hard-shell cooler is slightly larger than a checked piece of luggage, making it an ideal companion for an extended weekend getaway or camping trip. The rotomolded cooler has rope handles, a rubber seal around its lid, a metal dry storage basket, and tie-down loops.

Compared to the Roadie 24 I previously mentioned, this option has a 55% larger capacity (35 liters versus the Roadie’s 23 liters). It also has a drain system to allow you to quickly empty melted ice. It’s worth mentioning that the Tundra 45 is surprisingly heavy for its size and weighs 23 pounds when empty. It’s probably the largest hard-shell Yeti cooler that one person can comfortably handle.

Although the Yeti Tundra 45 is more expensive than most coolers, it retains ice longer than the competition to keep internal temperatures plenty low, it comes in a wide variety of fun colors and is durable as hell. It’s even bearproof!

  • Capacity: 75 liters
  • Dimensions: ‎38.3 L x 18.3 W x 18.1 H inches

The ICECO VL75ProD is the best option for large families, lengthy road trips, and folks who want a car cooler with dual zones that each have independent temperature controls. The cooler is essentially split in two and has separate lids for each side. That way, you can use one side as a refrigerator and the other as a freezer. Of course, you can set the same single temperature for each side in the event you strictly want to freeze or cool your items.

The cooler sports an ultra durable design with a steel shell and plastic bumpers. It’s weatherproof and has a sealed control panel, which has dual USB ports for charging your gear. It’s also equipped with bright LED lights on each side and comes with two baskets to help keep things organized. This option also packs dual drains if you use ice and need to empty it out once it melts.

Compared to the CFX3 75 from Dometic , the ICECO’s lids are easier to open for faster access to your items, even if you’re in the front seat. In fact, the lids can open in either direction! Both the Dometic and ICECO coolers allow users to completely remove the lids if need be. The Dometic also allows users to plug the cooler into both 12- and 120-volt outlets at the same time. However, Dometic’s coolers are oftentimes several hundred dollars more expensive than ICECO models.

If you have space for this massive cooler (it weighs a whopping 67 pounds), it will offer more than enough room to keep your food fresh and drinks ice cold. Although it’s typically priced at a hard-to-swallow $1,000-plus, it’s still cheaper than the competition and still has a reliable compressor and a durable build quality.

Whether you’re going camping, taking a road trip, or just need some place cool to store your groceries, portable car refrigerators are relatively affordable and extremely handy to keep in your EV. Maybe you own a Tesla and want to take advantage of its Camp Mode feature, putting down the back seats, setting up a mattress, and enjoying nature for the night. It really doesn’t matter if you own a Tesla or not, EVs are designed to be more practical and adding a 12-volt cooler makes it all that more functional.

But shopping for a car refrigerator isn’t easy. There are several brands on the market and pricing can range anywhere from $100 to over $1,000. After our recommendations, we’ll give you some advice on how to choose the best car refrigerator or cooler for you, but there is one main factor you should take into consideration while browsing our picks: size. Your preferred size and capacity of the cooler will help narrow down your options and we will recommend a wide range of capacities. Ultimately, you should choose the 12-volt cooler that’s the best fit for your needs, as any of these reputable brands will do the job well.

1. Top pick: ICECO GO20 dual zone portable refrigerator (20 liter)

The ICECO GO20 is the 12-volt car refrigerator I personally own and use and if you wish to learn more about it, you can read my full review . It’s a dual zone unit, allowing you to set separate temperatures for each zone. I particularly like the fast cooling option, which brought the left zone’s temperature from 81°F to 37°F in just 10 minutes during my testing. The unit also does a great job maintaining the set temperature for each zone, even for a long period of time.

While it does have Bluetooth and an app for your devices, limited Bluetooth range reduces the app’s helpfulness. But it does address my biggest complaint with the fridge, which is the controls on the lid. They’re not the most responsive touch controls, so setting your temperatures through the app is much easier. Overall, this fridge is very well built and worth the price, assuming you use it often.

Other minor features include a built-in LED light that is adequate, and a soft-closing lid so you don’t accidentally pinch your fingers. It comes with an adapter so you can plug it into your standard household outlet. What really sets this fridge apart from the competition is its Secop compressor, which is eerily quiet and efficient. ICECO provides a five-year warranty on the compressor and a one-year warranty on the other parts.

2. Runner-up: BougeRV 12-volt car refrigerator (22 liter or 28 liter)

Our top recommendation is available in either 22- or 28-liter sizes and strikes just the right balance of performance and price. We believe most of you will want one of these two sizes and no matter which one you choose, you’ll get fast cooling from 77°F to 32°F in about 20 minutes. If you need it to act as a freezer, it’ll go from 77°F to -5°F in about 50 minutes. This is without needing ice—it is a portable refrigerator after all.

BougeRV equips its 12-volt coolers with an ECO energy saving mode, meaning the portable fridge’s operating power is less than 45 watts. Even if you’re running on MAX mode, it’ll consume less than 1 kWh per day. If you’re purchasing this cooler for camping, you’ll be happy to know it’s relatively quiet at 45 dB. For safety, it’s equipped with a shockproof design, so you shouldn’t run into any issues even when travelling up a 30° incline. A three-level battery monitor prevents the fridge from draining your car’s battery and you have the ability to choose what battery voltage it’ll automatically shutoff to prevent a complete drain. Lastly, the company provides a two-year warranty on the compressor and other accessories.

3. Premium pick: Dometic CFX3 12-volt portable refrigerator and freezer (45 liter)

If you want one of the best 12-volt coolers and willing to pay the price, consider a portable refrigerator/freezer from Dometic. The CFX3 is a high-end, 12-volt cooler that’ll meet all the demands you can throw at it, with the ability to deep freeze all the way down to -7°F. It’s available in a variety of capacities, including 25-, 35-, 45-, 55-, 75-, and 100-liter options. No matter which one you choose, you’ll be getting an extremely rugged 12-volt cooler featuring a lightweight ExoFrame construction and aluminum handles.

One reason why this portable refrigerator/freezer is so popular, despite its price tag, is the ability to control it over WiFi or Bluetooth through a smartphone app. You can remotely adjust the temperature, or check on its performance while away from the unit. This can come really handy out on camping trips, or if you’re going off-roading with some of your buddies in an ATV and you’re away from camp. It also sports a high resolution color display and soft touch buttons for easy control on the unit itself. The Dometic CFX3 can be powered with AC, DC, or Solar and naturally it has a built-in three-stage dynamic battery protection system to ensure your car’s battery doesn’t fully drain.

Oh yeah and if you need ice while on the road, the Dometic CFX3 comes with an integrated ice-making compartment.

4. Best on a budget: AstroAI 12-volt car fridge cooler (15 liter or 22 liter)

If you’re looking for a decent-sized car refrigerator but won’t necessarily use it all that often, consider this recommendation from AstroAI. It’s available in 15- or 22-liter sizes and when empty, it’s capable of cooling down to 32°F in about 15 minutes. To get down to its lowest temperature of -4°F, it’ll take about 45 minutes. This cooler is also equipped with a MAX mode for fast cooling, as well as an ECO mode to save energy, consuming less than 1 kWh per day. It too is equipped with three levels of battery protection, automatically reducing its power consumption to maximize your vehicle’s battery life.

On the unit itself is an LED display panel and a USB charging port that you can use to top off your mobile devices. Inside the portable fridge is a built-in LED light to make it easier to find what you need at night. Lastly, there’s a child safety lock on this portable refrigerator to prevent accidental opening. Like all of our other recommendations, this fridge accepts either AC or DC power, allowing you to use this on the road or at home.

5. Best compact: Wagan EL6214 12-volt car cooler (14 liter)

Some people just need a really compact cooler for daily use, like keeping your kid’s snacks nice and cool on the way to picking them up from soccer practice. Or, you just want a small cooler to keep handy so your lunch doesn’t spoil on your way to work. Whatever may be the reason, our recommendation for something compact is this 14-liter portable fridge from Wagan. To give you an idea of its capacity, it can hold up to a dozen soda cans and is capable of fitting two-liter bottles. As you can imagine, it’s not as robust as our other recommendations, but it can cool down to 32 to 36°F or heat up to 140°F. Hey, you might even prefer that it’s basic and doesn’t have all the bells and whistles like our recommendation from Dometic.

As an added bonus, two external cupholders are built into the unit itself, making it great to have in the rear-middle seat if you’ve got two passengers on a road trip. A nylon carrying strap allows you to easily take it on the go when you get to your destination.

Can a 12-volt cooler drain my car’s battery?

Yes a 12-volt cooler can potentially drain your car’s battery, as can any device plugged into your car’s cigarette lighter receptacle. It’s the reason why so many of our recommendations have built-in battery protection, to ensure that doesn’t happen to you. Now, it’s very unlikely a car fridge will drain your battery while your car is running, but things are a bit different if you own a BEV. Tesla owners, for example, will want to use Camp Mode if you’re planning to leave your portable fridge plugged in overnight. Also, you’ll want to check to make sure your BEV doesn’t automatically power off your 12-volt outlet when the doors are locked, otherwise you’re going to come back to a not-so-cool fridge.

How long will a 12-volt car refrigerator stay cool once disconnected?

This largely depends on the cooler you purchase and its insulation. Quality coolers should be well insulated, which means you’ll get a few hours before the cooler itself is no longer cold. That is, of course, assuming it’s properly sealed and the lid isn’t cracked open. Check with your particular cooler on how long it stays cool once it’s unplugged.

Can I heat up food with a car refrigerator?

Although some car refrigerators do have heating functions, they aren’t meant to be a substitute for an oven or microwave. They’re designed to keep your food or drinks warm and shouldn’t be used beyond that. In other words, please don’t try to cook with one.

How long does a 12-volt cooler take to get cold?

Again, this largely depends on which product and capacity you purchase. Most companies will give specifications on how long it takes to reach a specific temperature threshold. Generally, an empty cooler should get cold in under an hour. If it’s packed with items, expect that time to be increased several fold. A general approximation you can follow is for each pound of items in the cooler, it’ll take an hour to go from room temperature to maximum cold.

BougeRV Car Fridge

So if you have to carry frozen treats like ice cream or meat you can maintain the optimal temperature to prevent them from melting or perishing. It’s compact and is easy to carry. Lastly, it can seal in the cold well and keep your foods and beverages at the right temperature.

It’s a 12V device and accepts charge from both AC and DC sources. Further, you can use a 12V portable power brick to charge it, thereby ensuring that you needn’t stop in between to charge it. It’s lightweight and maintains the temperature inside even when the ambient temperatures are not pleasant. The good news is that the BougeRV fridge is big enough to be placed in the car’s trunk or between seats. It works as advertised, and the customer service is reliable and responsive. Several users had high praise since they were quick to respond to customer queries or complaints.

The capacious design means you’ll be able to keep plenty of food and beverages for long car trips. And apart from regular 12V charging from the car charger, it also supports solar charging.

This car fridge is energy efficient and doesn’t hog the battery of your car or solar generator. A user has recounted that they could see the battery level of their solar generator drop by only 30% in 48 hours. That said, it cools fast, and the company has claimed it can reach 32-degree Fahrenheit (from 77F) in approximately 25 minutes. Buying Guides

Power Options:

Check the power options available for the car fridge. Most car fridges are designed to run on a 12V DC power source, typically from your vehicle's cigarette lighter socket. Some models may also have the option for AC power when connected to a standard electrical outlet. Consider if you need a car fridge that can also operate on alternative power sources like solar or battery power.

Energy Efficiency:

Look for a car fridge that is energy-efficient to minimize power consumption and prolong battery life. Models with energy-saving features such as low-power modes or automatic shut-off when reaching desired temperature can be beneficial, especially if you plan to use the fridge for extended periods or when the vehicle is stationary.

Temperature Control:

Ensure the car fridge offers precise temperature control to maintain the desired cooling or freezing levels for your items. Look for fridges with digital temperature displays and adjustable settings to cater to different storage requirements.

Construction and Durability:

Consider the build quality and durability of the car fridge, especially if you plan to use it in rugged outdoor environments or off-road adventures. Look for sturdy materials, reinforced corners, and robust latches to withstand vibrations and impacts.

Here's who could be responsible for paying for the Baltimore bridge disaster

  • The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed after a container ship collided with it.
  • Several entities could be on the hook to foot the bill in the aftermath of the disaster.
  • The maritime insurance industry will likely be saddled with the highest costs.

Insider Today

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed on Tuesday after a large container ship ran into it, leading to six presumed deaths and millions of dollars in possible damage.

It's still too early to estimate the total economic impact of the disaster, but between the cost of rebuilding the decades-old bridge, compensating the victims' families , and paying out damages for disruptions to the supply chain, the eventual cost of the disaster is expected to be significant.

Who will pay to rebuild the bridge?

President Joe Biden said on Tuesday the federal government should be responsible for paying to reconstruct the damaged Francis Scott Key Bridge.

"It is my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge, and I expect Congress to support my effort," Biden said.

The bridge was built in the 1970s for about $60 million, but the cost of rebuilding it could be 10 times its original price tag, an engineering expert told Sky News.

Baltimore is among the busiest ports in the nation , with more than a million shipping containers passing through each year. The collapse — which closed the port to all maritime and most road traffic until further notice — is already beginning to wreak havoc on the supply chain.

The cost of building the bridge back fast enough to offset diversions as much as possible could saddle the government with a more than $600 million bill, David MacKenzie, the chair of the engineering and architecture consultancy COWIfonden, told Sky News.

Who will pay for damages to the ship and its cargo?

The container ship, the Dali , is owned by a Singapore-based firm. The ship's charterer, Maersk, confirmed to Business Insider that vessel company Synergy Group operates the ship.

However, the companies with cargo aboard the Dali could ultimately be responsible for some of the ship's damages and cargo costs, according to Ryan Petersen , the CEO of the supply-chain-logistics company Flexport, which had two containers on the ship.

Related stories

The Dali was carrying 330 containers that must now be rerouted, Petersen said in an X thread.

An ancient maritime law known as " general average " dictates that companies with even a single container aboard a ship split certain damages pro rata based on the number of containers they had on board, ensuring all the stakeholders benefiting from the voyage are splitting the risk, Petersen said.

General average situations can occur when a ship is stranded or when cargo is damaged or thrown overboard to save the vessel, according to Flexport . The concept helps ensure that all parties who have a vested interest in the vessel share the cost and concern of protecting it.

It's too soon to know whether damages incurred to free the Dali in the coming days will qualify as a case of general average.

Who will pay for everything else?

The majority of the financial fallout is likely to lay primarily with the insurance industry, according to media reports.

Industry experts told the Financial Times that insurers could pay out losses for bridge damage, port disruption, and any loss of life.

The collapse could drive "one of the largest claims ever to hit the marine (re)insurance market," John Miklus, the president of the American Institute of Marine Underwriters, told Insurance Business.

He told the outlet that the loss of revenue from tolls while the bridge is being rebuilt will be expensive, as will any liability claims from deaths or injuries.

The Dali is covered by the Britannia Steam Ship Insurance Association Ltd., known as Britannia P&I Club, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence.

In a statement to Business Insider, Britannia said it was "working closely with the ship manager and relevant authorities to establish the facts and to help ensure that this situation is dealt with quickly and professionally."

Britannia is one of 12 mutual insurers included in the International Group of P&I Clubs, which maintains more than $3 billion of reinsurance cover, sources familiar with the matter told Insurance Business.

Britannia itself is liable for the first $10 million in damages, both FT and Insurance Business reported. Whatever remains is dealt with by the wider mutual insurance group and Lloyd's of London, a reinsurance market in the UK, the FT reported.

Update: March 28, 2024 — This story has been updated to include additional information about general average and clarify that it is too soon to know whether general average will apply in the case of the Dali.
